Jesus said to his disciples, I am the true vine, and my father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does, he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. Remain in me as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit because without me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither. People will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. By this is my father glorified that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. As we're coming through Easter, as we get into this section of John's gospel, if we forget, and when I say forget, most of us never were taught this to begin with, but if we forget the nature of John's gospel, it has us arrive at some really unfortunate places where if we understand where John's coming from, we end up in some great places with this gospel. The unfortunate thing is if people don't realize how removed John's gospel is from the history. It's the latest gospel. It was written as far as 80 years after the resurrection event. So this is not like Mark's gospel or Matthew's even in Luke's, which are a little later. In all three of those, Jesus is very clearly a Jewish rabbi. In this, he's a Greek philosopher. His language changes, his vocabulary's different, he no longer speaks in little parables. I mean, all of a sudden, he gives long treatises. It's a whole different personality. If we remember that this is John doing the real work of translation, I wish we had more writers like this in the church nowadays. You know, we sometimes get into a prayer now with the new translation, and about six lines into the prayer, I'm thinking, I would kill for a verb. It's so thick, and it's all over the place, and it's one subjunctive phrase after another, and I'm like, who translated this? And the translators, the final committee that okayed that English translation, had no native English speakers on the committee that okayed our translation. And that is the drawback to being such a widespread world language. I realized when I was living in Rome that, you know, there is not anyone who would dare tell a German how to speak German. But they'll all tell English speakers how to speak English, because everyone thinks they know it. And so everyone has different versions of it, and they don't like it that much. And the real art of translation is being in love with the language of origin and the target language. And the committee that translated it, while clearly in love with Latin, didn't care much for English. And so we sometimes get a translation that sounds like someone saying, you know, the house yellow is good. And you go, that's bad English. And they say, yes, but it's much more faithful to the Spanish. Yeah, but it's a bad translation. The idea is to get it clear in to the target language as well. And so we get these long phrases. Now John does the exact opposite. He not only is writing in a different style of Greek for his community, none of the Aramaic. This is really a pure Greek. But he translates the ideas. He doesn't give them Jewish parables that won't make any sense to them. He interprets them and puts them into cultural stories that make sense for the Greek mindset. He does, it's an amazing job of translation. But one of the drawbacks which we get today is that he kind of waffles back and forth between talking about Jesus and having Jesus speak. So where you will not find this in the earlier three gospels, you will get these long passages that if it were anyone but Jesus, we could probably admit are a little unpalatable. Without me, you can't do anything. It's all about me, me, me. And you go, that just doesn't sound like this wonderfully humble rabbi that we have in the other three. No, that's the disciple, that's the follower, that's speaking back about Jesus. And part of that Greek translation is the Greeks wrote dialogues. And everyone knew that you were saying, here's the theology and I'm gonna put it on the lips of Plato or on the lip. That was the style and John's written in that. So John's gospel, if you're looking for the actual words that Jesus spoke, John's gospel's not a great one to start with because they're freely mixed in with the gospel writer's own commentary because that's how Greek dialogues were written. And his audience knew it. Sometimes we think, well, are you saying the gospel isn't true? No, things can be true without having been written for 20th century newspaper readers. There are different genres out there. And if something nowadays starts with once upon a time, we get the cue and we know it's gonna be a parable. People will ask questions about the prodigal son and you have to remind him, there was no prodigal son. Jesus said, once upon a time, there was, and he told a story. Doesn't mean that he was telling a history. He was telling a parable. So John's gospel, sometimes when people hear this, without me, you can't, without me, they take that into their own Christianity and it becomes the sort of religion that says, without my faith and without my religion or without my church, you're nothing. And it sounds like you're echoing the gospel, but you forget that, no, it's someone talking about Jesus. And then if we can look past that, we get this wonderful reading that asks a very simple question that we get lost in all of that Greek epic dialogue. We lose, which is, instead of the, all of the old forms of an examination of conscience that we learned as Catholics, what happens if at the end of the day we go, huh, I wonder what fruit I bore today? What did I do for the world? How have I changed anything? You know, do we bear fruit in the world? It's such a wonderful phrase and it almost gets, if you'll excuse the agriculture, it almost gets plowed over by the heavy Greek dialogue of it. But to say, you know, when we're in the Spirit, when we're in Jesus, what are the fruits of our life? And I think most of us think, well, if you really wanna know the fruits of your life, you'll wait until a few moments before you die and then do a review. Problem is, none of us have been given that schedule. You know, what happens when more often we say, wait, let's just take a chunk. At the end of the day, what were the fruits of my day? You know, learning a new function on the remote control hardly seems like a great use of 24 hours. What did I do today? What did I, did I change anyone's life? Did I change the world? Did I change my own life? Am I an agent for God and the Spirit and the world? And that takes us asking that simple question over and over again. We can get lost in the, well, the vine and the branches and the connection, and it's a nice allegory. But I think sometimes when the Scripture, if the allegory is gonna try and explain the inner workings of God to us. I always loved, Father Philenbach had the only description of the inner workings of God that I have ever hung on to, and that was, he said, if someone says, what are the inner workings of the Trinity? The answer is none of your business. The inner workings of God, none of your business. Go feed the poor. None of your business. Go change the world. And instead we go, oh, no, no, no. I've got a deep spirituality. I'm not gonna do anything in the world. I'm gonna sit here and figure out God. And I'm gonna call that holy. We don't have a lot of stories of Jesus sitting around trying to figure out God. He just, he went out and did the work. I think sometimes we have to get our faith into our bones. We have to go out and do it. Faith has to be about the action that we commit in the world. And so it becomes this wonderful question that a little more than halfway through our Easter season we hear. So what are your fruits? What is it you're leaving in the world? What are the changes? What are the people? People come into your orbit for a little while and leave. Do they come in and do they leave changed? And I don't mean did you convert them to finally seeing things your way. Do they actually come in with their life easier now? Not because we gave them advice, but because we actually gave something to them. We actually did for them. You know, I understand the wisdom behind the old saying, you know, if you teach a man, you know, if you give a man a fish, he eats for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he eats for the rest of his life. But a lot of people use that so they never have to give out fish. Let me just explain the teaching. My father used to say, you know, if you teach a man to fish, he'll never work another weekend in his life. But, you know, the teaching and the offering, what we think should never be the starting place. You know, the rabbi vision of Jesus is so clear and he says, go out in the world, stay at whatever house you land in, and you've brought nothing with you, so you'll be dependent on those people for your well-being. And once you realize you're dependent on them, now you're ready to have a relationship and start to preach to them. Not a cheap and easy Christianity, you know, from the cheap seats that says, well, you know, I commented on their lives and walked on. But that you have to do it with enough humility that you're not going to break the relationship. You know, someone says, well, you know, you have to just speak your mind. If you break the relationship, what does it matter if you evangelized? It won't be effective. And at the end of evangelizing, you want to know if it was effective, not whether, well, I know I said what I was supposed to. If what you get out of evangelization is a sense of self-justification rather than a relationship that allows them and you to be changed, then we haven't really understood what it means to bear fruit in the world. And so we ask God to make us a people that are ready to go out and say, when I get to the end of the day, I can list my mistakes. I can go through a classic, you know, examination of conscience. I can figure out sins. I can do all that. But what did I produce? If the best I do at the end of the day is I don't think I broke any of the Ten Commandments, you know, at the end of our life, at the end of history, if the church can say, we didn't break any of the Ten Commandments. There's only three of us, but we didn't break any of the Ten Commandments. No, how do we change the world? And so we ask God to make us a people who bear fruit.
