Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said, I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away. And the wolf catches and scatters them. This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know mine, and mine know me, just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. And I will lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice. And there will be one flock, one shepherd. That is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. It is all right as mature Christians to admit that by the time John's gospel was writing, there was a lot of Greek philosophy getting mixed in. It's not quite that. You don't find quite the pure Semitic rabbi that we get in Mark, Matthew, and Luke. Jesus' vocabulary has improved greatly. He now speaks in sentences that are 20 lines long. You know, I mean, this is obviously the writer, John, trying to translate all these little Semitic tribal realities into Greek culture where he is proclaiming the gospel. And it always leaves us with an interesting question, which is, in religion, there are those who would say, you stick to the purest form of the story and the purest form of the religion, even if it will be completely ineffective and no one will listen. John disagrees. John says, no, you've got to somehow translate to the people that are there. And, you know, even to the point where there are some pieces of theology in John that no Christian theologian I know would hold to. And it's in our gospel. You know, he says today, this is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. And every theologian I know would say, no, God loves you because God's God. There's nothing you did to earn God's, God doesn't love you because you did something. So, you know, John's throwing a couple extra things in here and we can deal with that. You know, it is, the church did not come out of the gospel, the gospel came out of the church, and that is so hard for us to remember. That the gospels are a community document. They did not fall from heaven, leather bound with the words of Jesus in red. And it wasn't really until 325, and even then there's still arguments as to what would be the final canon of the New Testament. They were still arguing about which letters were gonna go in. I mean, it's a community process. And it gets us back to that faith of the early community. And we do see some differences from different communities. And I always think it's important for us to remember that we do not have four gospels written by four authors. We have four gospels written by four very different communities. You know, there is a Lucan community, a Matthean community, a Johannine community, and a Markan community. And the gospels answer their questions. Mark's community was the earliest and they could care less about the birth of Jesus. That's why the story isn't there. They just want to know who this guy is and what happened. And they want to know about the resurrection and the ministry. And 20 years later, when the gospels according to Matthew and according to Luke are written, people are now going, so where'd he come from? And by the time John starts, oh, the theologians have gotten involved. And so he starts out with in the beginning was the word and the word was made flesh. And you're going, where are the shepherds? Where's our little Christmas story? John's a later gospel. He's answering much deeper questions. And sometimes it gets lost in some of the Greek philosophy. And I don't mean he got lost. I mean, if you live in America in this century, you read Greek philosophy, and that's where the phrase, it's all Greek to me comes from. But we do have this image that we get today of the good shepherd. And I've no doubt it will spur on some interesting sermons around the country. It will certainly, you know, usually this is the time of year that the Pope quite correctly will go after the priests. And say, you know, this is where you need the smell of the sheep on you. Get out of the sacristies, get into the streets, all of those famous sayings that he has. The idea that we are called to be good shepherds. And I mean, it's great stuff. We need to hear it because, you know, he's our shepherd. I don't know that you need to hear that because, you know, it's telling you what we're doing wrong. You already have your own opinions on that. So it doesn't, you know. I think what's helpful, and it's definitely not about, you need to follow your shepherds. That is to take today and turn it on its head. To say, you know, Jesus has told us what kind of shepherds we should be, and our response is, it's your fault, and let me tell you why. No, no. Always, every time Jesus is angry, you'll see he comes after the religious leaders. It's not you, it's us. And we use every one of those stories to go after you. So you always have to read with that filter. It's human nature. But I think there's something worthwhile to say. If we're gonna follow Jesus, then everyone in the room has to ask, who do I shepherd? Because shepherding should not be left to a class within the church. Within any church, within any community. I always think that parents who go into the empty nest syndrome, now, two things first. First, of course, most parents who have been through it will tell you, don't get comfortable. By the time the last one leaves, the first one is swinging back around again. It is the way life goes, you know. So, you know, the empty nest will happen when you die. But secondly, I think there would be something very wrong with the idea that someone says, well, you know, in my 50s, even in my 60s, all right, I'm done taking care of anyone. That would be a really sad sort of thing. And I notice in the church that 90% of our volunteer force is in the last third of life. Not just because they have the time, but because somewhere down deep, they decided, I'm not done taking care of others. Just because kids are gone. There are some people who never have kids and still spend their life taking care of people. And it's very interesting to ask who we take care of. And people will sometimes not come up with it right away. Some people sit on a board over here. Some people are down at a food shelter simply stocking shelves. And so they don't see the contact, but they're taking care of people. And it's a great Sunday for us to ask who it is we take care of. Sometimes it is family. Sometimes it's beyond family. Sometimes it's extended family. And sometimes it's community. Sometimes it's people across the world we can't imagine. Who do we take care of? Who do we shepherd? And it's important to be in touch with that because it is our only chance to really follow Jesus. I think people forget the reason, and it's been so watered down over the years. This image that Jesus uses of shepherding. Why does Jesus pick shepherding? And why does Jesus pick certain parables? Well, because he's in an agricultural and a farming sort of community. If Jesus had come today, you know, we would probably, and lived in Denver, he'd probably use building cranes, you know? He'd come up with something that made sense to us. We'd go, yeah, we get that, we know that. You have to forget, people, shepherding for us kind of sounds like a distant sort of romantic thing. Now, no shepherd has ever found that to be the case. Shepherding is a lot of work, and it's not the kind of work we've turned it into over the years. Christianity, I've told you before, has been very careful about taking the gospel away from the poor and trying to give it back to the rich. We've been doing that for, you know, that's when it ceased to become about going out and helping people, and it became about getting those people to act like good, decent, upper-middle-class white folks. They've gotta come up to our standards, and we'll be a religion, and religion will get these people to behave a certain way. That's how we took the gospel from the poor, rather than saying, you know, the reason they talk about the shepherd and the sheep, and I always hate when people say, oh, well, you know, they're just dumb sheep. Vatican II is very clear that, you know, you are all the people of God. You've been elevated. You used to be the dumb sheep. You are now the people of God. But as that, you're also shepherds, and what it means, and what I think is very vivid about the image of shepherding is it's not about correction and making sure they do the right thing and telling them this is a sin and that isn't. You know, explain that to your animals someday. Now, I know I'm gonna get letters from the dog owners because I've been in the park, and I've watched people look at a dog and say, stop, and you know what? The dog stops. Come, and the dog comes. Then I'll see someone go, I have told you this 50 times, and it makes me so mad. Do you know how this makes me feel? And I'm like, no, he doesn't. Your dog really doesn't communicate at that level. You know, it is fascinating when people, you know, they're like, there's an old story among linguists when they got into this, can monkeys know language, and some monkeys seem to have a functioning vocabulary of 800 words, but there's things you need to know, and one is they're very concrete. They can be taught banana. You know, they can be taught sun, and see the sun. They can be taught those sorts of things. Not one of them has ever explained to anyone that their parents were poor but hardworking. You're not gonna get to that level. That sort of abstract, you know, you and I need to share our experience with other people, and it comes from within us, and we have this need to express in certain ways. And so, you know, the trick to pastoring, and it's not I'm smart and they're sheep. No, the trick to pastoring is real pastoring can happen without verbal communication. And that is a struggle. Real pastoring is when we're out doing the physical work that helps people, when we're actually giving to causes that help people. It happens without, here's what I think you should do. That can be helpful, and instruction is part of our faith, and it's part of the church. Pastoring is a little more physical. That's why Francis keeps saying, get out of the sacristies where you're preparing all your pretty words, and get into the streets where you can pastor. It's, and if he says that to us, he says it to all of us. It's fascinating, I mean, parents know there is a part of parenting that has to do, you know, don't, do not try to parent your children without words. Because they'll have plenty, you know. And I had a parent once say to me, I don't ever, my child will never hear me say the word no. She probably read a book, give her a break, you know, there's a book that said it or something. And all I thought was, oh, let's see how long that lasts. You know, the kid heard it from somewhere because the kid learned it real quick. Kid gets it, you know, and the idea, and what, you know, I get that sort of sense. I don't want, you know, I don't want my children to be afraid of me. There's a small moment in their childhood development where they have to be. Because you know what? There's nothing about that burner on the stove that's frightening. You will have to say no in such a way that they're more afraid of you than that pretty red burner. You have to, then, now, when you have to go there, you have to know, okay, this has gotta be a phase, I can't have them afraid of me. But for a moment, I can't explain the philosophy of life to them. For a moment, I have to say, you don't go out on the street, period. And if you do, you will get the wrath of a parent. Sometimes you'll need that at a certain age, and then you have to know when to make sure that develops into something smarter. I think for pastoring, we have to know that once in a while, yes, we're going to talk once in a while, there's gonna be instruction, but the vast majority of pastoring, the vast majority of parenting will be sacrifice. And it could happen without words. It happens when we give time, it happens when we give money, it happens when we give effort, when we go out and we help people. That's the moment that we are part of the Good Shepherd. That's the moment we're actually part of the mission of Jesus.
