Jesus said to Nicodemus, Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish, but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned. Whoever does not believe has already been condemned because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives, the truth comes to the light, so that his work may be clearly seen as done in God. The Gospel of the Lord. I always am so aware, especially in these sections of John's Gospel, that you kind of have to apologize for the horrible translating into English nowadays. That, I mean, we all know that there are problems with the pronouns, and it just doesn't seem like that women exist in this world. You know, whoever believes in God, he will do this, and he will do that, and he'll do the other thing, and if he doesn't, then he will do this. And I'm thinking, either it's a sexist translation, or women are off the hook and can do anything they want. I'll let you decide what it means. You know, I think I mentioned last week that the Ten Commandments are written this way, and it kind of hit me later on that, you know, the Ten Commandments really do talk about women as property. You know, you will not covet your husband's property, not his house, not his wife, not his slaves. I mean, she's just thrown right into the mix. But since it only applies, the whole list of commandments is only applying to men in the way it's translated, I always think, you know, there's a payoff. Because things like, thou shalt not commit murder, and all this. So, according to Scripture, he owns you, but you can kill him. You know, we kind of have to get beyond those things and try and figure out what it's saying to us in our day and in our language. And this image of the serpent in the desert is out of the Hebrew Scriptures, the early Scriptures. And it's this odd story when they're in the desert, and they're being, they kind of stumble into what must be a small nation of snakes in the desert. They're being plagued by snakebiting. And the story is that, you know, they ask, and God tells them to construct a snake on a pole, an image of a snake, which is interesting, given the you shall have no other images. But this one they get. And if they will, you know, all they have to do is gaze upon it, and they'll be cured. It becomes, years down the line, the symbol of modern medicine. The snakes on the rod. But you kind of think, what an interesting image for modern medicine. Because to us, it sort of sounds like a tribal witch doctor sort of thing. Look at this, and you'll be cured. But the deeper wisdom behind it is, which all of science and medicine is based on, is if you've got a problem, you don't run from it. You examine it. You look at it. You dig into it. You lean into the problem. You embrace it, and then you solve it. It's about this, what is your issue? Oh, don't run from the snakes. Because you have to lay down and sleep once in a while. They'll get you. Face them. What are the things in life we don't face? And life is a constant series of very, very minor difficulties. Unless we let them build up. But if we think that life shouldn't ever be difficult, to the extent that we don't think life takes effort, then we find ourselves kind of in this place that the gospel talks about, this place of darkness, where we really don't want anyone to see what's going on behind the scenes. And you want to say, and why? Why is that so fearful to us? And it usually happens for one of two reasons. Either we're doing things behind the scenes that we don't want anyone to know about, or it's just sort of a bother. Because I don't want them weighing in on my life. Which for me is a little hypocritical, because I get to spend at least once a week and weigh in on all of yours. But there's that sort of thing that we just like to, we'll just show you the finished product. And we kind of go around with this sense that we don't want, whenever someone says, well, they don't need to know what's going on behind the scenes. You know there's a shame there. You know there's something there that even if it's just I don't want to be bothered with it, we're just convinced if the world knew who we are, it would be a worse place. And here we're told, lean into it. You know, I mentioned I was kind of, I was kind of shocked. And now every time I mention it, I feel like people think I'm doing something heroic, which was so bizarre, because it was not meant that way. But a few years ago on Good Friday, I talked about in my life battles with depression. And I got lots of letters. And I thought at the time, it's 2016. Is this still something people don't talk about? I mean, it didn't occur to me. We've never heard anyone talk about it. And I wanted to say, well, of course not. They were depressed. They didn't want to talk to you. But I've noticed when I battled that over the years that there is something. Now, this is not a cure-all. But it's amazing the layer of pressure it takes off. Sometimes if I feel like I'm going into this cycle of depression, once in a while to go, lean into it. So who cares? Be as, don't just be depressed. You want to be depressed? I'll show you depression and raise you morose. Lean into it. Have a nice, luxurious depression. It never lasts so long. Because it kind of takes away its power. It's no longer the enemy at the gate that we fight. Once in a while, we go, what happens when I just say, you know, this is the difficulty of life. Let it be difficult. How many times has children, most of us maybe have, if not exactly this, a similar experience. I remember as a child, my mother would say, it would be a Saturday morning and it would be wonderful out. And, you know, and she was like, you were supposed to clean it? You were supposed to clean your room yesterday. You're going to clean the room before you go out and play. I can't tell you the entire days of play I would give up because I wasn't going to clean that room, rather than take 10 minutes of effort and then get on with my day. I'd rather give up the day because while I keep it in front of me, it's this paralyzing mountain I don't want to climb. And once I start up it, it's usually gone. I have shared with you before, and I don't mean this in a mean way, but in my job, there is not a single thing I do that I look forward to. Not one. There's also not a single thing that I don't enjoy once I'm doing it. And you'd think over the years, I would have been able to sign up, parlay that into knowing I'll be enjoying it while I'm doing it. So just walk out the house and do it. You know, I don't dislike saying mass, but 15 minutes earlier when I'm at the house going, you know, if I didn't have to say that mass, you know, I could have another cup of coffee. At that moment, I'm like, oh, I have something I have to get done. And I spend too much of my life thinking, okay, well, you know, I've got all this stuff coming up, and if I just get past that, and then I think for a minute, I go, okay, wait, wait, then there's Holy Week. But once I get past, once I get past Easter, it's a coast. Except that we've got confirmations that month in graduation. But once I get past, and then all of a sudden it hits me, that's my life I'm trying to get past. You don't get past your life until you die. You know, oh, I've just got one more to get through. No, no, that's your life. And if you're trying to get past it, you're missing it. And so once in a while, they say, oh, is that what you're afraid of? Stare at it. Examine it. Let it be part of your life, but only part. And know that we are a people that believe that when we can embrace the cross, we're on the way to resurrection. We don't get lost in that sort of old-school sort of old-style Christianity, even that old-style Catholicism of, we offer it up because you suffer, because when you suffer, God just likes you more. And we're gonna suffer, and we're gonna suffer. No, we suffer when we think by suffering, we get through to something better. And it's necessary. People have to study to get the grade. We have to sometimes do the parts that we don't like, because it's gonna open something up. And if we're doing a lot of suffering that isn't helping anything, then it's time to back up and re-examine. But Christian suffering serves a purpose. I think a lot of people are, you know, we get into that, you know, we're called to suffer just to suffer. You know, I gave up all sorts of things for Lent so that these six weeks last forever. You know, instead of, no, we're doing something, Lent, that will actually make us, put us in a better place by Easter. God really isn't this horrible sort of entity that wants us suffering. That early vision of God in the first reading is, you know, I always think, you know, this is the sort of, early on we have a picture in Scripture of what I call the emotionally fragile God. You know, they have really upset him this time, and now he's so angry, he is never gonna stop, it says. You know what? None of you are that powerful. There is not one of you that is going to do something today that is going to set God off. But we know, we know that idea's in there from our childhood. Oh, God's mad now. No, no, that's mom or dad. And you did set them off. God is, God has not got the same emotional, you know, fragileness that we are all so used to. And we stop to think that because we keep thinking, well, if what I'm doing isn't going to make God feel better, what's the point? It's not. You know, I just, I was talking to God just this morning. Still not talking back, but I was, God's doing fine. You know, and so how do we serve God? Well, that's why He puts other people in our lives. You know, how are they doing? Do we check in with them? What's our encouragement of the people around us? How do we allow them to embrace those difficult times knowing that we can all get through to somewhere better? How do we, you know, encourage one another, not just towards Easter, but sometimes we have to encourage one another into the passion and death knowing that resurrection's on the other side. Resurrection's on the other side, not because isn't suffering wonderful. Because we know that effort is necessary to get to certain places. And some places the effort actually rises to the level of suffering. So we don't, we don't aggrandize our suffering. We never think that those who drove the nails into Jesus were doing God's work. Even though it falls into the plan of salvation, we can't make heroes out of the villains. You know, instead we go, all of us are going to have difficulty. All of us are going to have, you know, hard moments in life. All of us are gonna have to have effort to grow. We're doing this program on the second half of life in about a week that's happening. And that's why I was reading it today. I don't know, I just started laughing. It could be my age. But I'm reading and it says, you know, we're there to celebrate everything over 50. And I'm like, that's a tough theme, you know. You know, we're gonna give you more life. And all I could think in my head is, what if I don't want more life? As you get older, it's interesting the things that you start to go, you know, different things are effort. You know, it's more effort to get out and exercise. If I don't, you know, let me tell you, the resurrection's getting real far away. You know, there are things we do that are effort every day. Not, suffering is too loaded a word sometimes. But if we accept every day's effort and encourage one another through it, we get to better places. God does not need or want the world to suffer.
