This liturgy takes place once a year, so it's not like our normal mass, so things happen. In a minute, we will do the veneration of the cross, which is a very unique ritual in our faith, where people come up, and we will have the cross, we'll do a procession with it, it's laid out, and people come and they touch the cross, and some take a moment to pray, and it reminds us that this moment of loss and death and pain and desolation are central to our faith, and it's thrown around so much that we don't always think why, and so we hear a lot of odd ideas thrown out in the world as to why Christians are so focused to the cross. First off, the cross does nothing for us. The man on the cross is a different story. I think sometimes we just, linguistically, we get talking about the cross. The cross is wood. The man on the cross, and what happens, and why God comes down to die, and there's a thing called atonement theology, which is not my favorite, which is God needed Jesus to suffer before he let us off the hook, and it makes Jesus the hero, but you kind of raise an eyebrow at God. It's an elephant right in the center of our Christianity that no one wants to really say, well, what was he saving us from? Well, you know, hell. Well, who made hell? And we start wiggling and getting a little uncomfortable, and it kind of comes down to this feeling that Jesus saves us from the wrath of, okay, we don't want to go there. What do we do with that absolute paradox in our faith? Incarnation theology says Jesus came to die and to suffer because those are experiences that God cannot have. God can't suffer. God can't not know what's happening tomorrow, so God has to empty himself and become like us. And we could say, you know, we could have told him ahead of time, why would you want to come and suffer and die? And if you look through history and if you look through your lives, if you look what's going on right now in our own culture and around the world, you come to realize something very quickly, and that is there is a human bond that happens in suffering that happens nowhere else in life. You know, triumph is fun, we enjoy it, but it is in the suffering that we really come together. It's sort of the paradox of our faith. I always tell people, especially people who either they're new to the faith or they aren't sure, they're new to the parish, and they'll always say things like, well, you know, I struggle with this belief and I feel alone. When you feel alone, that's when you know you're like everyone else. When you feel like you don't fit in, oh, you are one of us. That's that paradox. And so in our woundedness is the wholeness. How do we get there? Because that's why we come and we're brave enough to look at the cross. Not just because we think, oh, eventually it's resurrection, but because we know when we look at the cross, that's where our connection to one another is. I'm going to share, I'm not going to sing a song, but I am going to share with you a line of a song, so I'm going to make Nick get off the keyboard. You know, he comes clear from out of town and I boot him. For those of you that don't know, I've been on a, like a craze, writing music lately, and I've backed off, not all of you, but I've backed off church music. I've been writing church music forever and, you know, other than having five rhymes for the word charity, you know, after a while you think I've got to write some different lyrics just to keep myself sharp. So I thought I'm going to do a cycle of theater songs, of a life, a life that starts and goes clear to death, and what's been plaguing me is the last song, the death. Because I had this chorus and I knew what I wanted to do with it, I kind of, it started out as a tribute to my grandmother Dolan, which quickly became a tribute to my grandmother Kelly, I'll tell you. But just, what happened is at the very end of this, I was three notes away from being able to end this song and go to bed one night, and I finally had to give up. And what I had done, because I know a lot of us have felt like in the last few years that all the battles we fought in our life, you know, we fought against racism and we fought against sexism and we fought against all these isms, and we all of a sudden look around and they're on the rise again and we think those mountains that we thought we climbed are ahead of us. And when did that happen? And I kind of wanted to weave that into this last thing about, you know, one of my grandmothers used to always say, you know, you do what's yours to do and you trust others. You know, even at the end of your life, you didn't get everything done. And so I was going to, I was going to end with this, which is this, um... And we don't change the whole world and the race isn't done. But we pass the baton to those still able to run. Remember all we've achieved on the shoulders of those who came before us to begin this fight we know that we chose. We are, and I couldn't think of the last word. We are one just sounded like, you know, I knew I was going there. But we are, and it wasn't a religious piece, we are gods, we are peace. And I thought, you know, we, my belief there, we're the body of Christ. We're this group that's connected through our woundedness. And you know, lyrics will drive me up a tree until I find the lyric I want. And so I did what anyone would do. I forgot about that song and wrote the others. And I, and I, the verses were about my grandmother. So it's not going to shock you. I had two grandmothers. Some people have more. I just had two. And my grandmother, Dolan, that's how the song started out. I have this memory. When I was a kid, my grandmother, if I was sitting next to my grandmother, no matter what else was happening in the family, it was like being in a safe zone. No one would have tried anything around her, not because she was harsh. She was the gentlest woman you ever met. And I remember her hands. And I remember if I was sitting there holding my grandmother's hands in a, in a, and many of you know, I've told you, I, I grew up in a home with two alcoholic parents and five older brothers that had no supervision. Do the math. When I was holding grandmother Dolan's hand, I was safe. It's probably the only experience in childhood I had of safe, was holding that hand. And so I grew up with this deep love for my grandmother, Dolan. And as I started to write the song, I realized, you know, she had, she had an easy, gentle life. I started to realize I will never understand that security and that safety, and I'll always have that love for her. But my grandmother, Kelly, was my hero. In the early 1930s, she was left by her husband and raised two girls alone. In the 30s and in the 40s, in a world that told her she didn't need as much pay as men. And she raised two girls and she saw him through boarding school and she, I mean, and yes, she was a harder woman when she got older. We didn't mess around with grandmother Kelly. Even though she made the best peanut brittle in the world. But you know, and, and, and her daughters, unfortunately, as is so common, their dad took off and they never saw him again and he kind of showed up in adult life. When daddy came to town, everything was wonderful. And when mom, who had been there every day of her life, was there, oh, she kind of irritated them. And I realized she was the hero. And she was the one that used to tell me, and I'd say, because when I started to realize how poor she'd grown, I'd, how do you get through? And she'd always say, you do what's yours to do. It's all you can do. You do what's yours to do. And so I got to thinking, it's that woundedness that connects us. That's the body of Christ. That it is our absolute loss that is our absolute gaining of one another. We don't get that anywhere else. I'm watching these young people all over the world and they're marching and they're not marching because they're triumphant, they're marching because they're wounded. They're wounded. And their wounds will bond them beyond anything we can imagine. Because that's what bonds us. This tether. So today I went back to this song because I had a homily to write. And then you look, you look for distractions. So I thought, you know, it's like when I was in college, when it was time to study for exams, that's when I finally cleaned the dorm. So I thought I'd go back to this song and I got to that same point. And literally, my hands changed keys. And I went to a different place. And it was my image of the body of Christ. But I didn't know it until I'd done it. If I get emotional, I've been a wreck writing for three months. So you'll just have to live. So I got the same chorus. A change in the world and the race isn't done. But we pass the baton to those still able to run. Remember all we've achieved on the shoulders of those who came before us. To begin this fight, we know that we chose. We are part of the unbroken chain of all who've been broken. Lifted by unspoken pain to speak the words that must be spoken. Live a life that's given us. And when we are gone, just like those who came before us, trust who follow will carry on. We'll trust that those who follow will carry on. I started to realize that's who we are. We are the unbroken chain of all who've been broken. We've all been broken. But the chain has not. The connection is not. And actually, it is our brokenness that is the chain. Throughout history, 2,000 years, the chain is not broken. Every link is. So we sometimes I think we look into ourselves for healing. No. It's okay. We grew up in generations that said, look to yourself. Look inside for that strength. It's the chain that is our strength. It is the chain that tethers us to the cross tonight. The unbroken chain of all who've been broken, it tethers us to Christ. It tethers us to Easter. It tethers us to one another. It tethers us to the gospel. And we can look it in the face tonight because it tethers us to the resurrection.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 17.0, "text": " For those of you who may be visiting, and you WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:17.000 For those of you who may be visiting, and you feel like you don't know what's going 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:25.360 on in the service, neither do the Catholics, so it's okay. 00:00:25.360 --> 00:00:31.920 This liturgy takes place once a year, so it's not like our normal mass, so things happen. 00:00:31.920 --> 00:00:36.279 In a minute, we will do the veneration of the cross, which is a very unique ritual in 00:00:36.279 --> 00:00:40.000 our faith, where people come up, and we will have the cross, we'll do a procession with 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:43.759 it, it's laid out, and people come and they touch the cross, and some take a moment to 00:00:43.759 --> 00:00:51.680 pray, and it reminds us that this moment of loss and death and pain and desolation are 00:00:51.680 --> 00:00:59.360 central to our faith, and it's thrown around so much that we don't always think why, and 00:00:59.360 --> 00:01:08.040 so we hear a lot of odd ideas thrown out in the world as to why Christians are so focused 00:01:08.040 --> 00:01:09.040 to the cross. 00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:12.080 First off, the cross does nothing for us. 00:01:12.080 --> 00:01:16.919 The man on the cross is a different story. 00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:22.279 I think sometimes we just, linguistically, we get talking about the cross. 00:01:22.279 --> 00:01:24.500 The cross is wood. 00:01:24.500 --> 00:01:32.040 The man on the cross, and what happens, and why God comes down to die, and there's a thing 00:01:32.040 --> 00:01:38.400 called atonement theology, which is not my favorite, which is God needed Jesus to suffer 00:01:38.400 --> 00:01:44.839 before he let us off the hook, and it makes Jesus the hero, but you kind of raise an eyebrow 00:01:44.839 --> 00:01:46.680 at God. 00:01:47.319 --> 00:01:53.319 It's an elephant right in the center of our Christianity that no one wants to really say, 00:01:53.319 --> 00:01:56.000 well, what was he saving us from? 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:58.160 Well, you know, hell. 00:01:58.160 --> 00:02:01.199 Well, who made hell? 00:02:01.199 --> 00:02:06.080 And we start wiggling and getting a little uncomfortable, and it kind of comes down to 00:02:06.080 --> 00:02:16.080 this feeling that Jesus saves us from the wrath of, okay, we don't want to go there. 00:02:16.960 --> 00:02:23.119 What do we do with that absolute paradox in our faith? 00:02:23.119 --> 00:02:32.520 Incarnation theology says Jesus came to die and to suffer because those are experiences 00:02:32.520 --> 00:02:37.399 that God cannot have. 00:02:37.399 --> 00:02:38.600 God can't suffer. 00:02:38.600 --> 00:02:43.320 God can't not know what's happening tomorrow, so God has to empty himself and become like 00:02:43.320 --> 00:02:44.320 us. 00:02:44.559 --> 00:02:48.520 And we could say, you know, we could have told him ahead of time, why would you want 00:02:48.520 --> 00:02:52.039 to come and suffer and die? 00:02:52.039 --> 00:02:55.559 And if you look through history and if you look through your lives, if you look what's 00:02:55.559 --> 00:03:00.240 going on right now in our own culture and around the world, you come to realize something 00:03:00.240 --> 00:03:08.119 very quickly, and that is there is a human bond that happens in suffering that happens 00:03:08.119 --> 00:03:10.919 nowhere else in life. 00:03:11.520 --> 00:03:21.720 You know, triumph is fun, we enjoy it, but it is in the suffering that we really come 00:03:21.720 --> 00:03:22.720 together. 00:03:22.720 --> 00:03:26.720 It's sort of the paradox of our faith. 00:03:26.720 --> 00:03:31.839 I always tell people, especially people who either they're new to the faith or they 00:03:31.839 --> 00:03:35.279 aren't sure, they're new to the parish, and they'll always say things like, well, 00:03:35.279 --> 00:03:39.199 you know, I struggle with this belief and I feel alone. 00:03:39.199 --> 00:03:44.360 When you feel alone, that's when you know you're like everyone else. 00:03:44.360 --> 00:03:49.759 When you feel like you don't fit in, oh, you are one of us. 00:03:49.759 --> 00:03:51.699 That's that paradox. 00:03:51.699 --> 00:03:57.800 And so in our woundedness is the wholeness. 00:03:57.800 --> 00:03:58.919 How do we get there? 00:03:58.919 --> 00:04:03.500 Because that's why we come and we're brave enough to look at the cross. 00:04:03.500 --> 00:04:07.839 Not just because we think, oh, eventually it's resurrection, but because we know when 00:04:07.839 --> 00:04:14.839 we look at the cross, that's where our connection to one another is. 00:04:14.839 --> 00:04:17.359 I'm going to share, I'm not going to sing a song, but I am going to share with you a 00:04:17.359 --> 00:04:21.079 line of a song, so I'm going to make Nick get off the keyboard. 00:04:21.079 --> 00:04:25.760 You know, he comes clear from out of town and I boot him. 00:04:25.760 --> 00:04:33.160 For those of you that don't know, I've been on a, like a craze, writing music lately, 00:04:33.160 --> 00:04:38.239 and I've backed off, not all of you, but I've backed off church music. 00:04:38.239 --> 00:04:42.720 I've been writing church music forever and, you know, other than having five rhymes for 00:04:42.720 --> 00:04:48.519 the word charity, you know, after a while you think I've got to write some different 00:04:48.519 --> 00:04:50.839 lyrics just to keep myself sharp. 00:04:50.839 --> 00:04:57.640 So I thought I'm going to do a cycle of theater songs, of a life, a life that starts and goes 00:04:57.640 --> 00:05:03.320 clear to death, and what's been plaguing me is the last song, the death. 00:05:03.320 --> 00:05:08.040 Because I had this chorus and I knew what I wanted to do with it, I kind of, it started 00:05:08.040 --> 00:05:12.239 out as a tribute to my grandmother Dolan, which quickly became a tribute to my grandmother 00:05:12.239 --> 00:05:14.480 Kelly, I'll tell you. 00:05:14.480 --> 00:05:21.440 But just, what happened is at the very end of this, I was three notes away from being 00:05:21.440 --> 00:05:27.320 able to end this song and go to bed one night, and I finally had to give up. 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:31.600 And what I had done, because I know a lot of us have felt like in the last few years 00:05:31.600 --> 00:05:36.839 that all the battles we fought in our life, you know, we fought against racism and we 00:05:36.839 --> 00:05:42.559 fought against sexism and we fought against all these isms, and we all of a sudden look 00:05:42.559 --> 00:05:46.959 around and they're on the rise again and we think those mountains that we thought we climbed 00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:49.079 are ahead of us. 00:05:49.079 --> 00:05:50.519 And when did that happen? 00:05:50.519 --> 00:05:54.920 And I kind of wanted to weave that into this last thing about, you know, one of my grandmothers 00:05:54.920 --> 00:06:00.160 used to always say, you know, you do what's yours to do and you trust others. 00:06:00.160 --> 00:06:03.279 You know, even at the end of your life, you didn't get everything done. 00:06:03.279 --> 00:06:06.640 And so I was going to, I was going to end with this, which is this, um... 00:06:06.640 --> 00:06:13.640 And we don't change the whole world and the race isn't done. 00:06:13.640 --> 00:06:17.640 But we pass the baton to those still able to run. 00:06:18.359 --> 00:06:25.519 Remember all we've achieved on the shoulders of those who came before us to begin this 00:06:25.519 --> 00:06:29.600 fight we know that we chose. 00:06:29.600 --> 00:06:34.600 We are, and I couldn't think of the last word. 00:06:34.600 --> 00:06:40.320 We are one just sounded like, you know, I knew I was going there. 00:06:40.320 --> 00:06:47.359 But we are, and it wasn't a religious piece, we are gods, we are peace. 00:06:47.359 --> 00:06:51.720 And I thought, you know, we, my belief there, we're the body of Christ. 00:06:51.720 --> 00:06:56.679 We're this group that's connected through our woundedness. 00:06:56.679 --> 00:07:00.519 And you know, lyrics will drive me up a tree until I find the lyric I want. 00:07:00.519 --> 00:07:02.000 And so I did what anyone would do. 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:06.920 I forgot about that song and wrote the others. 00:07:06.920 --> 00:07:09.440 And I, and I, the verses were about my grandmother. 00:07:09.440 --> 00:07:10.640 So it's not going to shock you. 00:07:10.640 --> 00:07:14.440 I had two grandmothers. 00:07:14.440 --> 00:07:15.440 Some people have more. 00:07:15.440 --> 00:07:17.480 I just had two. 00:07:17.480 --> 00:07:19.760 And my grandmother, Dolan, that's how the song started out. 00:07:19.760 --> 00:07:21.880 I have this memory. 00:07:21.880 --> 00:07:26.160 When I was a kid, my grandmother, if I was sitting next to my grandmother, no matter 00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:30.279 what else was happening in the family, it was like being in a safe zone. 00:07:30.279 --> 00:07:34.559 No one would have tried anything around her, not because she was harsh. 00:07:34.559 --> 00:07:37.160 She was the gentlest woman you ever met. 00:07:37.160 --> 00:07:39.720 And I remember her hands. 00:07:39.720 --> 00:07:43.959 And I remember if I was sitting there holding my grandmother's hands in a, in a, and many 00:07:43.959 --> 00:07:49.279 of you know, I've told you, I, I grew up in a home with two alcoholic parents and five 00:07:49.279 --> 00:07:51.640 older brothers that had no supervision. 00:07:51.640 --> 00:07:56.320 Do the math. 00:07:56.320 --> 00:07:59.839 When I was holding grandmother Dolan's hand, I was safe. 00:07:59.839 --> 00:08:07.739 It's probably the only experience in childhood I had of safe, was holding that hand. 00:08:07.739 --> 00:08:10.399 And so I grew up with this deep love for my grandmother, Dolan. 00:08:10.399 --> 00:08:14.559 And as I started to write the song, I realized, you know, she had, she had an easy, gentle 00:08:14.559 --> 00:08:15.559 life. 00:08:15.559 --> 00:08:21.239 I started to realize I will never understand that security and that safety, and I'll always 00:08:21.239 --> 00:08:22.559 have that love for her. 00:08:22.559 --> 00:08:27.160 But my grandmother, Kelly, was my hero. 00:08:27.160 --> 00:08:32.880 In the early 1930s, she was left by her husband and raised two girls alone. 00:08:32.880 --> 00:08:39.520 In the 30s and in the 40s, in a world that told her she didn't need as much pay as men. 00:08:39.640 --> 00:08:44.760 And she raised two girls and she saw him through boarding school and she, I mean, and yes, 00:08:44.760 --> 00:08:47.960 she was a harder woman when she got older. 00:08:47.960 --> 00:08:52.679 We didn't mess around with grandmother Kelly. 00:08:52.679 --> 00:08:58.119 Even though she made the best peanut brittle in the world. 00:08:58.119 --> 00:09:03.960 But you know, and, and, and her daughters, unfortunately, as is so common, their dad 00:09:03.960 --> 00:09:07.200 took off and they never saw him again and he kind of showed up in adult life. 00:09:07.640 --> 00:09:11.119 When daddy came to town, everything was wonderful. 00:09:11.119 --> 00:09:15.840 And when mom, who had been there every day of her life, was there, oh, she kind of irritated 00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:16.840 them. 00:09:16.840 --> 00:09:20.460 And I realized she was the hero. 00:09:20.460 --> 00:09:23.719 And she was the one that used to tell me, and I'd say, because when I started to realize 00:09:23.719 --> 00:09:26.080 how poor she'd grown, I'd, how do you get through? 00:09:26.080 --> 00:09:29.880 And she'd always say, you do what's yours to do. 00:09:29.880 --> 00:09:30.880 It's all you can do. 00:09:30.880 --> 00:09:32.760 You do what's yours to do. 00:09:32.760 --> 00:09:36.559 And so I got to thinking, it's that woundedness that connects us. 00:09:36.559 --> 00:09:38.080 That's the body of Christ. 00:09:38.080 --> 00:09:44.919 That it is our absolute loss that is our absolute gaining of one another. 00:09:44.919 --> 00:09:46.400 We don't get that anywhere else. 00:09:46.400 --> 00:09:50.119 I'm watching these young people all over the world and they're marching and they're not 00:09:50.119 --> 00:09:54.200 marching because they're triumphant, they're marching because they're wounded. 00:09:54.200 --> 00:09:56.919 They're wounded. 00:09:56.919 --> 00:10:01.539 And their wounds will bond them beyond anything we can imagine. 00:10:01.539 --> 00:10:03.679 Because that's what bonds us. 00:10:03.679 --> 00:10:04.679 This tether. 00:10:04.799 --> 00:10:08.559 So today I went back to this song because I had a homily to write. 00:10:08.559 --> 00:10:10.840 And then you look, you look for distractions. 00:10:10.840 --> 00:10:14.119 So I thought, you know, it's like when I was in college, when it was time to study for 00:10:14.119 --> 00:10:17.619 exams, that's when I finally cleaned the dorm. 00:10:17.619 --> 00:10:21.239 So I thought I'd go back to this song and I got to that same point. 00:10:21.239 --> 00:10:25.299 And literally, my hands changed keys. 00:10:25.299 --> 00:10:27.799 And I went to a different place. 00:10:27.799 --> 00:10:30.359 And it was my image of the body of Christ. 00:10:30.359 --> 00:10:31.780 But I didn't know it until I'd done it. 00:10:31.940 --> 00:10:34.780 If I get emotional, I've been a wreck writing for three months. 00:10:34.780 --> 00:10:36.659 So you'll just have to live. 00:10:36.659 --> 00:10:38.059 So I got the same chorus. 00:10:38.059 --> 00:10:42.299 A change in the world and the race isn't done. 00:10:42.299 --> 00:10:47.099 But we pass the baton to those still able to run. 00:10:47.099 --> 00:10:51.979 Remember all we've achieved on the shoulders of those who came before us. 00:10:51.979 --> 00:10:58.940 To begin this fight, we know that we chose. 00:10:58.940 --> 00:11:04.979 We are part of the unbroken chain of all who've been broken. 00:11:04.979 --> 00:11:10.340 Lifted by unspoken pain to speak the words that must be spoken. 00:11:10.340 --> 00:11:12.419 Live a life that's given us. 00:11:12.419 --> 00:11:24.219 And when we are gone, just like those who came before us, trust who follow will carry on. 00:11:24.219 --> 00:11:33.260 We'll trust that those who follow will carry on. 00:11:33.260 --> 00:11:35.940 I started to realize that's who we are. 00:11:35.940 --> 00:11:40.419 We are the unbroken chain of all who've been broken. 00:11:40.419 --> 00:11:41.419 We've all been broken. 00:11:41.419 --> 00:11:44.140 But the chain has not. 00:11:44.140 --> 00:11:45.979 The connection is not. 00:11:45.979 --> 00:11:50.059 And actually, it is our brokenness that is the chain. 00:11:50.059 --> 00:11:55.140 Throughout history, 2,000 years, the chain is not broken. 00:11:55.140 --> 00:11:58.260 Every link is. 00:11:58.260 --> 00:12:01.780 So we sometimes I think we look into ourselves for healing. 00:12:01.780 --> 00:12:02.780 No. 00:12:02.780 --> 00:12:03.780 It's okay. 00:12:03.780 --> 00:12:07.260 We grew up in generations that said, look to yourself. 00:12:07.260 --> 00:12:09.940 Look inside for that strength. 00:12:09.940 --> 00:12:13.059 It's the chain that is our strength. 00:12:13.059 --> 00:12:17.340 It is the chain that tethers us to the cross tonight. 00:12:17.340 --> 00:12:22.380 The unbroken chain of all who've been broken, it tethers us to Christ. 00:12:22.380 --> 00:12:24.419 It tethers us to Easter. 00:12:24.419 --> 00:12:26.140 It tethers us to one another. 00:12:26.140 --> 00:12:28.099 It tethers us to the gospel. 00:12:28.099 --> 00:12:33.179 And we can look it in the face tonight because it tethers us to the resurrection.

Father Pat’s message is a powerful meditation on the paradox at the heart of the Christian faith: that suffering, loss, and brokenness are not signs of separation from God or one another, but the very means by which we are united, to each other and to Christ. He emphasizes that it is not the wooden cross that saves, but the man upon it—Jesus—who entered into human suffering not to appease divine wrath, but to fully participate in our human condition. By reflecting on personal experiences, the legacy of his grandmothers, and the communal ritual of the veneration of the cross, Father Pat invites us to recognize that our wounds form the chain that connects us across generations and into the body of Christ. In our brokenness, we find communion, and in communion, we find resurrection. Father Pat’s homily explores the deep spiritual meaning of Good Friday, focusing on the ritual of the veneration of the cross. He begins by disarming any discomfort visitors may feel by humorously noting that even regular churchgoers can feel unsure during such a unique liturgy. But this disorientation serves as an entry point into the deeper theme: that Christianity hinges on a powerful paradox. Central to the faith is the suffering and death of Jesus—not because God required pain as a prerequisite for forgiveness (a critique he levels at certain atonement theologies), but because God, in Christ, chose to enter into the fullness of human experience, including its pain. This is Incarnation Theology: that God emptied Himself to know what it means to suffer, to be abandoned, to die. Father Pat challenges simplistic or punitive interpretations of the crucifixion. He invites listeners to consider not the cross as an object, but the person on it. He critiques the notion that Jesus died to save us from God’s wrath, since that would raise troubling questions about the nature of God. Instead, he presents Jesus' suffering as a profound act of divine solidarity with humanity. It is in suffering that human beings most deeply connect, and this shared woundedness forms a sacred bond. In moments of desolation, we are not alone—we are most connected. This is the paradox: our wholeness is found in our woundedness, our unity in our brokenness. To illustrate this truth, Father Pat shares a personal journey through songwriting, inspired by his grandmothers. One grandmother offered him a sense of safety and gentleness; the other, strength and resilience in the face of hardship. Through these stories, he reflects on how the struggles and sacrifices of past generations shape our present. His grandmother Kelly’s mantra—“You do what’s yours to do”—becomes a spiritual compass, reminding us that our contribution, however incomplete, is part of a larger, ongoing chain of faith and justice. This leads into the metaphor that becomes the heart of his reflection: "We are part of the unbroken chain of all who've been broken." In this poetic image—culminating in the song lyrics he shares—he expresses a theology that sees brokenness not as something to be avoided or hidden, but as the very structure that connects us across time and space, grounding us in the body of Christ. The chain is unbroken not because its links are whole, but because its broken links are joined in compassion, memory, and hope. Ultimately, Father Pat invites us to see the veneration of the cross not merely as a ritual of mourning, but as one of connection. To approach the cross is to acknowledge our pain and the pain of others. It is to recognize that through Christ’s suffering and death, we are tethered—to God, to one another, to the communion of saints, and to the promise of resurrection. The chain of the broken is not a symbol of defeat, but of sacred continuity. In this chain, we are held, healed, and made whole.
