Glory to you, O Lord. Before the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world, and he loved them to the end. The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So during supper, fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Master, are you going to wash my feet? Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will understand later. Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me. Simon Peter said to him, Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well. Jesus said to him, Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over. So you are clean, but not all. For he knew who would betray him. For this reason he said, Not all of you are clean. So when he had washed their feet and put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me teacher and master, and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you also should do.\" The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The triduum that we celebrate these three days, and I mentioned in the bulletin cover this Easter that, you know, it's an odd word. It's sort of a noun and an adjective, triduum. The closest thing we actually have to it in English is the old word fortnight. You know, fortnight was 14 nights, and it could refer to the period of time or to a specific fortnight. But for us, pretty much this is the only thing it really refers to. And it offers us an opportunity we don't get the rest of the year. It offers us a couple opportunities. Just as people who rarely come to Mass will show up on Easter Sunday and Christmas Sunday, Christmas Day, whatever day it is, this is the moment where the parish, you know, sometimes they come, and they've been here every week forever, and they look like it's a sea of strangers, and it's always the chance to say, morning people, these are the evening people. Evening people, these are... Because we tend to go not just to a parish, but, you know, no one will say it, but they'll be like, yes, well, you know, my parish is Mother of God, 9.30 a.m. Fourth pew, organ side. I mean, we're kind of creatures of habit. And so you have a community, and you start to see, you know, a group full of people that you don't always see. And what I think I... I love the themes of Holy Thursday probably almost more than any night of the year. Where I confessed, I fessed up last weekend that Palm Sunday, Passion Sunday, is my least favorite. Because there's too much going on. There's palm entrance and passion, and there was an anointing of Jesus' feet this time, and it had everything but, you know, horses. And, I mean, it was... It's too rich, and you can't do enough with it. This one has an interesting focus, if we really understand. I always use, I have a couple different ones I use, but the penitential right, I always say, especially on Holy Thursday, you know, let us call to mind our sins. And I always say, you know, Lord Jesus, through the gift of faith we learn from our past. Through the gift of hope we look to our future. And I think we don't always understand. Faith really is the way we approach our past. We inherit our faith. Our faith is passed on from those who have already come. And hope is what gives us something, you know, it takes our faith into the future. But tonight is about that third one, which is, and through love and charity we change the world in this moment. What Jesus did, and then what the church does by starting the triduum with this reading, they could have very easily said, you know, tonight's about the Last Supper, which it is, but we always get this gospel of the washing of the feet. This could have become kind of what I call a spectacular insurance sale sort of religion. Which is what Christianity is for a lot of people. You know, I'm Christian and I do things that I just don't like and it's miserable and it kind of makes my life not as happy as it could be, but at the payoff, after I die, will be incredible. That's insurance religion. And the struggle with it is it's it's too easily a tool to manipulate people. Because we don't have a lot of people reporting back. And so it's fair for people to say, wait, you want me to do this and this and this, and oh yes, because that's the rule and that's how you get into heaven. But what Jesus does is he makes it much more relevant by saying, you know, that's all important, but this faith is about how you're going how you're going to live today. And I don't, I'm not talking about what you need to do, I'm talking about the payoff is also today. If we live Christianity the way Jesus asked us to, even if we were wrong about heaven, we've made this life better. And if someone has sold you a version of Christianity that says it's going to make this life awful, but the next life will be better, that's insurance policy religion. But Jesus takes it and he says, you know, I know where I've come from, God. I know where I'm going to, God. And because of all that, what? A miracle? No. The Eucharist? No. He says because of all that, Scripture says, he starts to minister to them. He does the foot washing. And I think people hear that and think that that's a setup for what's what's going to happen over the next couple days. Jesus, you know, the actual words he says here is, you know, that aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and he was returning to God. And I imagine if you just ask most Christians, you said during the, what's going to come next? And they're going to say, he was able to go to the cross. He was able to sacrifice everything. Because of that knowledge, no. Because of that knowledge, he said, because I have that much confidence, now, let me serve you right here and now. Let me just make life better right here. I think most of us think that people of great faith are ready, they're ready to die and they're ready to meet their maker. Actually, people of great faith are ready to meet whoever hits them on the road tomorrow and they have to deal with. Are we ready? Am I ready for the next life? God's going to put a million things in your way between now and then. And this is a feast of preparedness. Of being prepared to help the people around us. That opening reading, it says, it's always one of my favorite lines because it's one of the many things in scripture people go, uh-huh, uh-huh, and I wonder how many of us have learned to nod our heads having not a clue what's being said. I mean, how many of you have actually girded your loins lately? I mean, you know, this was long before Playtex came out. What did it mean? But we all hear, oh yeah, remember, they're supposed to gird their loins and we all just sit there going, not a clue what that's about, but we don't even notice. We're so used to thinking, and what it literally meant, and the ritual was, you know, men's robes, you know, were about this flattering, but they had a hem. You know, they're tight. If you've ever seen, at least authentically done movies of that era, you know, they kind of had to walk a little straight leg because those hems had no give and they weren't, they didn't have a lot of extra fabric in them. And so to gird your loins meant to pull everything up above your knees and be ready to run. That's why it says, eat like you're someone in flight. The Passover was this remembrance that they were going to flee at any moment and leave the captivity of Egypt. You know, it was this, do you live life ready to respond to what's going to happen today? Not, I'm ready to die. You know, I'm ready to live. I'm ready to do what I have to do today. And I think a lot of us, you know, in our prayer life, we're at, you know, we've got God trying to help us to be ready for a long distance in the future, but not for what might happen in the next hour. And it's amazing how we can be ready to die, but walk past a person in need because we're not ready to help. You know, we're supposed to be ready to help. And that's what Jesus does. He says, okay, it's all set. I know where I'm from. I know where I'm headed to. I know I have the power of God. And then he washes their feet. No big miracle. I think when we have that kind of confidence and know who we are and where we've come from and where we're going to, we're not quite so worried that we're going to spend ourselves. We always think of Jesus being spent on the cross, but he lets them know you spend yourselves now. If everyone in the world was a Christian after the heart of Jesus, then everyone in the world would be taken care of. That's how we'd see the difference. And if it turned out that we were wrong about heaven, we'd have still built it here on earth. Instead of, well, you know, they've told me, you know, I have to change this, and I have to change this, and I can't do that, and, you know, I can't live my life, and I can't come to church, and I broke this rule, and I'm in horrible shape, and if I just, it's going to be miserable, but if I just buckle under for everything, I'll get the payoff later. That's salesmanship. Jesus gives them that and then says, but let me show you what it's really about. And then he does this strange thing, and they must have thought it was the oddest thing in the world. I mean, can you imagine being at a dinner party? I just won the Powerball. Let me wash your feet. But the symbol is there. You know, I now know. I now know that he's saying, he knows where he's coming, and he knows where he's going to. I have nothing to lose. And most people, when they have nothing to lose, I don't think people think that way. If you had nothing to lose, how differently would you live your life? And how many of us come right up with, I'd spend more time helping others? That's the wonder of this mind of Jesus is the scripture says the minute he finally realizes everything and knows everything, he is even freer to help others. And so we get this moment where all of the Eucharist, all of the miracle, all of the triduum is put back into this moment of what it means to be called to minister to one another, to take care of one another, and in a very daily way. Now, you and I kind of think of washing feet as sort of a, I don't know, degrading thing. It's degrading, and having your feet washed is very personal. And all of this stuff that we kind of, you know, it just isn't done at Shanahan's. It's just, it's a little odd. But in a desert community, these people, and you know, when you travel in the desert, you know, foot washing was a huge part of hospitality. So even though we hang on to an ancient ritual that doesn't probably make much sense in our culture, the idea is it's an offer of hospitality. And when we see the ritual unfold in front of us, what we should see is the offer to hospitality to each person. And so for those of you who are able, I'm going to offer a little bit of a different challenge this year. Come up in line, and we're offering hospitality. We have, I think, over the years, turned it into a family moment. Offer hospitality. Wash the feet of someone who's never been in your home. Wash the feet of someone you've never had a meal with. Use that as a promise to connect to someone you have not yet connected to this year. This could have become

kind of what I call a spectacular

insurance sale sort of religion.

Which is what Christianity is for a lot of people.

You know, I'm Christian and I do things

that I just don't like and it's miserable

and it kind of makes my life not as happy as it could be,

but at the payoff, after I die, will be incredible.

That's insurance religion.

And the struggle with it is it's

it's too easily a tool to manipulate people.

Because we don't have a lot of people reporting back.

And so it's fair for people to say,

wait, you want me to do this and this and this,

and oh yes, because that's the rule

and that's how you get into heaven.

But what Jesus does is he makes it

much more relevant by saying,

you know, that's all important,

but this faith is about how you're going

how you're going to live today.

And I don't, I'm not talking about

what you need to do, I'm talking about

the payoff is also today.

If we live Christianity the way Jesus asked us to,

even if we were wrong about heaven,

we've made this life better.

And if someone has sold you a version of Christianity

that says it's going to make this life awful,

but the next life will be better,

A miracle? No.

and think that that's a setup for what's

what's going to happen over the next couple days.

Jesus, you know, the actual words he says here is,

you know, that aware that the Father had put everything

into his power and that he had come from God
