Glory to you, O Lord. On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, peace be with you. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them, peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he said this, he breathed on them and said to them, receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Every year we get this reading twice during the season. We usually get it the Sunday right after Easter, and then we get it again on Pentecost, the Gospel. We get that first reading, which is the big Pentecost reading, only today. And they're both kind of versions of Pentecost. There is the small sending of the Spirit to the smaller group, and then there is that large picture of Pentecost that we get in the first reading. And I think that in both cases, the first is the more problematic. And I had to say this just a few weeks ago when I read this. And I always say it when I read this because you would never want anyone who had not been in church for a long time to come and hear that reading and actually think that we nowadays are okay with vilifying the Jews, which it really—John does this. You know, when he's speaking of crowds of people, if they're listening to Jesus, they're multitudes or crowds. And when they're not, they're Jews. He does it all through his gospel. And he writes at a time when this early Christianity and the rest of Judaism are really embattled with one another. And this is his way of defining these two groups. And there are many—I know priests who say, oh, you know, I just changed the word to something else. And I'm like, no, don't change the Scripture. Confront it. Confront it and take it on. We don't need to whitewash the Gospels. We need to say, look, it can creep in there. It can creep in anywhere. Bias creeps in to all of us. And it's good to have reminders that it creeps in. Because the gift of Pentecost is this openness to the community. You'll notice that the Spirit is never sent to individuals. It's always a group setting. He sends the Spirit on a group because the Spirit works between people. Most of us think of spirituality as an internal thing. I'm going to become more spiritual. I'm going to find that voice deep within. It's something inside me. Rather than, no, it's something inside the community, meaning it's between us. And that's a difficult concept, especially in a culture that prizes individuality as much as ours. You know, we start telling children from a very young age, anytime they get upset, we say to them, you're special. And what we're really saying is, you're not like any of those other horrible—you're different. And you know, even though that is temporarily comforting, what most children want is not to be special. They want to belong. They want to belong with others. And so they're special in the way that everyone is special. Meaning that, again, it's a belonging. You know, if you get too special, I've got friends who are so special they don't belong anywhere. You know, I mean, in other words, we use that word, I think. And I mean, it's okay, parents use that. But I think we tend to use that word to say, we want to celebrate what you don't have in common with anyone. And I think what we need to do is say, look, you're going to have a different life than everyone else, but you're going to find out eventually. You're going to be shocked at the very things what are troubling kids at that age. What they really need to know is when they walk into the room and they think, I don't feel like I belong anywhere. Oh good, you're just like 90% of the other kids. They all feel that. It's actually a common experience. It's something they can use to bond with one another rather than making them more and more and more and more and more unique. So I think we always have to balance that with our children, letting them know they are special, letting them know they have things in common. Because it's scary to not have a little bit in common with other people. And that's the whole Pentecost story. I think many people think because of the image in the air of the tongues of flame, people get that mixed up and think, you know, it's about the gift of tongues, which no one really has a really good description of yet. No one knows what the gift of tongues is. You know, different religions have different takes on it. But Pentecost is not about that at all. As a matter of fact, Pentecost, if anything, was the gift of ears. Because you'll notice, it doesn't say they spoke different language. It says everyone understood them as though it were their own language. It's a gift of understanding. It's how we listen. We like to think of, oh, a couple people got hit with the spirit and they were able to speak magically so that everyone understood. No, the magic, if you want to call it that, is in the people who understand, who are open to hearing. The entire Pentecost story is, for the author who writes it, the author of Luke and Acts, the story is a healing of the story of the Tower of Babel. You know, in the story of the Tower of Babel, everyone starts off speaking and understanding one another, and by the end of it, no one understands anyone. It's the reverse of that, and it's because it's the reverse going on. The Tower of Babel is a bunch of people who've decided they will find a way to heaven. They will build the way to heaven, and you know what would happen. If we built a tower to heaven tomorrow, there'd be wars over the gate. And who gets in? Thank goodness, we're not in charge of who gets to heaven. When we decide we're in charge of who gets to heaven, we will stop understanding each other very quickly. But here, it's not us getting to heaven. It's the descent of the Holy Spirit. It's God coming to us. And you know where it can be very easy to be judgmental when you think you're getting yourself to heaven. I've done the right thing my whole life, but those people over there, and I don't know why I always pick these people, but you know. But you know, those people over there, I don't know if they're doing the right thing. But when it's God coming down to us, and we have to go, I don't merit this gift from God. It's a much—it's a less satisfying emotionally. It's less satisfying an answer to say, I was given completely a gift to heaven, and I don't merit it at all, but they merit it even less. Now that just doesn't satisfy us as much. So we choose usually to build towers rather than to be open to God coming down to us. But we can't get there. We have to be open to a gift of grace. And once we're open to it, it's very hard to resent that other people have it. It's why the Spirit builds community. It's why it comes down, and it lives in the community. It's why all of a sudden people who weren't understanding each other understand. And I don't know the magic of the story. I don't know if they, you know, auditorily heard, physically heard words in their own language, or they just understood. You know, I had yesterday what I would consider a Pentecost experience. I was at the funeral for Father Peter's mother. She passed away last week, nine weeks after dad. And so, you know, the family is very upset. Well, Father Peter, he did something I could never, I would never even attempt to pull off at a parent's funeral because he sang a song that was clearly special to his mother. And he pulls out this mic, and you know, he's getting the mic ready. And now the whole service, I should tell you why it's a Pentecost experience. The whole service was in Vietnamese. There were only two awkward, tall, blonde people on the altar of about 12 Vietnamese priests. I was one of them, you know. And, you know, didn't understand a word of it, but it's the Mass. You know the Mass, and you know when we're at the Alleluia, and you know we're at the Gospel reading, and you know the Mass. And so we're going along. So the homily, all in Vietnamese, I don't have a clue what's going on. And he's getting out this microphone, and I see them setting up the music, and I think, he's gonna sing. I'm probably one of six people in the room that didn't understand the homily, so I didn't know he was gonna sing. And I don't know what the song was. It was a Vietnamese song. It was in Vietnamese. The music starts. He starts singing. And I'm listening to it, and I'm kind of listening. And I look out, and every, I would say literally 95% of the people are Vietnamese. Every Vietnamese woman in the place just starts wailing and sobbing at this song. And I'm like, wow, this is really good. I wish I knew what it was, you know. But it didn't matter. It hit me a moment later. Oh, it's Vietnamese Danny Boy. You know, if that was an Irish funeral and someone got up and sang Danny Boy, everyone would go to pieces. And I thought, every culture has these things. And I don't need to understand the words. I understand what's going on. It's not that he's saying something. I don't need to go find the lyrics to that because it's gonna be the best poem ever. It's a song they all know, and that song has a history with them. And the song, you know, we know these things in our own culture. No one has ever tried to tout that the song Happy Birthday is a great piece of music. But it's the only song acceptable when the cake comes out with the candles because it ties you to every other experience of that. And so, you know, sometimes you understand if you're just open to being there, to receiving, and that really is a Pentecost moment when we start to understand the Spirit between us. Because when we look inside and go, I'm gonna have this inward journey of the Spirit, I'm always fascinated when people will say, I'm really trying to become more spiritual. Because if I were to ask them, what would that look like? How will you know? If tomorrow you wake up more spiritual, will you feel differently? Will you have a different emotion? Will people not irritate you? Have you simply not noticed that people aren't around? You know, what will it be to be spiritual? If you woke up today more spiritual, how would you have known? So we've got this goal there that we're not— it's because spirituality is nebulous by nature. But Pentecost is pretty solid for us. It says to you, you know, this is a communal thing. You'll know that you're being more spiritual when the people around you are being helped more. Your deeper spirituality is not for you. It's for those around you. And so where prayer is a great thing, people who start to multiply their prayers, you know, people say, well, you know, rather than one rosary, I'm up to 20 rosaries a day. We start to do these things instead of getting out into the world. I'll go to Mass more often rather than going out and doing things. Now it can empower those things and it becomes a really nice balance. But sometimes we kind of think, well, I'm going to become more spiritual with this inward journey. Spirituality drives us out towards one another because it's given to the community. The Spirit belongs to none of us and all of us. When I was a—I can't remember what grade, but I remember the first time I was horrified by the fact that I was going to have to do a project with some other students. And we were just going to get whatever grade they all did. And, you know, if you happen to have someone in your group that was not going to pull their weight, your grade would suffer. I grew up in an individualistic society. That just wasn't fair. It never occurred to me that your ability to work with the group might be what was being graded and might have actually been more important than science. You know, it horrified me. What do you mean that my mark is going to depend on other people? What if, as the church has taught in the past, what if we get to heaven as a community or not at all? What would that do to us? I think most people would be like, oh, wait, wait, wait, that is not Christian. Actually it is, but for us it's horrifying because it's not American. It's not American. I get ahead and I don't care, you know, that's kind of our thing is you go out and you work hard and you can help others if you want, but I can get ahead on my own. Actually, Christianity, the huge difference in Catholicism and other versions of Christianity is that Catholicism is not all my personal walk with Jesus. That's other takes on Christ. It's my personal walk with Jesus, my personal walk with the Lord. No, no, we are saved in community. It's very different. It's why we come together for the Eucharist. It's why we come, you know, we come to be bonded together and find Jesus in the group. And we have to become people of deep understanding. That last little line that says, you know, whose sins you retain are retained, whose sins you forgive are forgiven. Very different in this gospel. You'll notice he doesn't say anything you hold against anyone, God will hold against them. It's more like he gives you two bottles of medicine. He says, now remember, if you use this medicine, people are saved. And if you use this one, they'll die. And we walk away thinking he just gave us permission to kill anyone we want. No, there's a warning in that. When it says whose sins you retain are retained, that is a warning. And I think many versions of Christianity have flipped that on their head. They're very happy that we can say, if we say they're going to hell, they're going to hell. I was speaking with a friend of mine who's a priest across the country. And we were talking, I can't remember what the topic was. And I said, well, you know, we have to be forgiving towards these people and these people. And he said, you know, that's not up to us. That is a sin against God. And I said, well, I thought if we forgave it, it was forgiven. We don't like to use that side of the equation. What if? What if then when someone says, but that's a sin. Oh, well, we can forgive that. Well, we can't forgive it if this isn't. No, no, he just says if you forgive it, it's forgiven. I don't think we want to use that medicine. It's too frightening. Because it means if someone isn't forgiven, it's because of my hardness of heart rather. Well, no, it's their sin. Can't do anything about it. They're sinners. No, our forgiveness is always available if we make it available. And when it's not, that speaks of who we are. Pentecost is a great end of the Easter season, but it's a tough holiday. It reminds us that why most of us look inward, the Spirit is between us. The Spirit is given to us as a whole. And only when we start to open those ears of understanding to one another will we ever really understand the texture of the Spirit, the shape of the human soul. Only then do we start to see the Pentecost vision of the kingdom of God.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 1.0, "text": " The Lord be with you.", "tokens": [50364, 440, 3257, WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.000 The Lord be with you. 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:02.000 And with your spirit. 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:05.000 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:07.000 Glory to you, O Lord. 00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:09.000 On the evening of that first day of the week, 00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:12.000 when the doors were locked where the disciples were for fear 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:15.000 of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst 00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:17.000 and said to them, peace be with you. 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:21.000 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:24.000 The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:26.000 Jesus said to them, peace be with you. 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:29.000 As the Father has sent me, so I send you. 00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:32.000 And when he said this, he breathed on them and said to them, 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:34.000 receive the Holy Spirit. 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:36.000 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:40.000 and whose sins you retain are retained. 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:42.000 The Gospel of the Lord. 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:45.000 Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:56.000 Amen. 00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:00.000 Every year we get this reading twice during the season. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:02.000 We usually get it the Sunday right after Easter, 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:05.000 and then we get it again on Pentecost, the Gospel. 00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:08.000 We get that first reading, which is the big Pentecost reading, 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:09.000 only today. 00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:13.000 And they're both kind of versions of Pentecost. 00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:16.000 There is the small sending of the Spirit to the smaller group, 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.000 and then there is that large picture of Pentecost that we get in the first reading. 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:26.000 And I think that in both cases, the first is the more problematic. 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:29.000 And I had to say this just a few weeks ago when I read this. 00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:33.000 And I always say it when I read this because you would never want anyone 00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:37.000 who had not been in church for a long time to come and hear that reading 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:43.000 and actually think that we nowadays are okay with vilifying the Jews, 00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:46.000 which it really—John does this. 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:51.000 You know, when he's speaking of crowds of people, 00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:54.000 if they're listening to Jesus, they're multitudes or crowds. 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:56.000 And when they're not, they're Jews. 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:58.000 He does it all through his gospel. 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:02.000 And he writes at a time when this early Christianity 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:06.000 and the rest of Judaism are really embattled with one another. 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:12.000 And this is his way of defining these two groups. 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:15.000 And there are many—I know priests who say, 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:17.000 oh, you know, I just changed the word to something else. 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:19.000 And I'm like, no, don't change the Scripture. 00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:20.000 Confront it. 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:22.000 Confront it and take it on. 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:24.000 We don't need to whitewash the Gospels. 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:26.000 We need to say, look, it can creep in there. 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:28.000 It can creep in anywhere. 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:30.000 Bias creeps in to all of us. 00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:33.000 And it's good to have reminders that it creeps in. 00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:40.000 Because the gift of Pentecost is this openness to the community. 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:44.000 You'll notice that the Spirit is never sent to individuals. 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:46.000 It's always a group setting. 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:48.000 He sends the Spirit on a group 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:51.000 because the Spirit works between people. 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:55.000 Most of us think of spirituality as an internal thing. 00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:57.000 I'm going to become more spiritual. 00:02:57.000 --> 00:02:59.000 I'm going to find that voice deep within. 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:02.000 It's something inside me. 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:05.000 Rather than, no, it's something inside the community, 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:07.000 meaning it's between us. 00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:09.000 And that's a difficult concept, 00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:14.000 especially in a culture that prizes individuality as much as ours. 00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:18.000 You know, we start telling children from a very young age, 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:21.000 anytime they get upset, we say to them, you're special. 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:23.000 And what we're really saying is, 00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:26.000 you're not like any of those other horrible—you're different. 00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:32.000 And you know, even though that is temporarily comforting, 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:35.000 what most children want is not to be special. 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:37.000 They want to belong. 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.000 They want to belong with others. 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:44.000 And so they're special in the way that everyone is special. 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:48.000 Meaning that, again, it's a belonging. 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:51.000 You know, if you get too special, 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:55.000 I've got friends who are so special they don't belong anywhere. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:59.000 You know, I mean, in other words, we use that word, I think. 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:01.000 And I mean, it's okay, parents use that. 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:04.000 But I think we tend to use that word to say, 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:08.000 we want to celebrate what you don't have in common with anyone. 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:12.000 And I think what we need to do is say, look, 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:15.000 you're going to have a different life than everyone else, 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:17.000 but you're going to find out eventually. 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:20.000 You're going to be shocked at the very things 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:23.000 what are troubling kids at that age. 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:26.000 What they really need to know is when they walk into the room 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:29.000 and they think, I don't feel like I belong anywhere. 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:31.000 Oh good, you're just like 90% of the other kids. 00:04:31.000 --> 00:04:33.000 They all feel that. 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:35.000 It's actually a common experience. 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:38.000 It's something they can use to bond with one another 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:41.000 rather than making them more and more and more and more and more unique. 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:44.000 So I think we always have to balance that with our children, 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:46.000 letting them know they are special, 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:49.000 letting them know they have things in common. 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:56.000 Because it's scary to not have a little bit in common with other people. 00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:58.000 And that's the whole Pentecost story. 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:01.000 I think many people think because of the image 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:04.000 in the air of the tongues of flame, 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:06.000 people get that mixed up and think, 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:09.000 you know, it's about the gift of tongues, 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:12.000 which no one really has a really good description of yet. 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:14.000 No one knows what the gift of tongues is. 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:17.000 You know, different religions have different takes on it. 00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:20.000 But Pentecost is not about that at all. 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.000 As a matter of fact, Pentecost, if anything, was the gift of ears. 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:28.000 Because you'll notice, it doesn't say they spoke different language. 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:32.000 It says everyone understood them as though it were their own language. 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:34.000 It's a gift of understanding. 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:35.000 It's how we listen. 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:38.000 We like to think of, oh, a couple people got hit with the spirit 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:42.000 and they were able to speak magically so that everyone understood. 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:45.000 No, the magic, if you want to call it that, 00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:49.000 is in the people who understand, who are open to hearing. 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:54.000 The entire Pentecost story is, for the author who writes it, 00:05:54.000 --> 00:05:56.000 the author of Luke and Acts, 00:05:56.000 --> 00:06:01.000 the story is a healing of the story of the Tower of Babel. 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:04.000 You know, in the story of the Tower of Babel, 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:07.000 everyone starts off speaking and understanding one another, 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:10.000 and by the end of it, no one understands anyone. 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:14.000 It's the reverse of that, and it's because it's the reverse going on. 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:17.000 The Tower of Babel is a bunch of people who've decided 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:19.000 they will find a way to heaven. 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:23.000 They will build the way to heaven, and you know what would happen. 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:27.000 If we built a tower to heaven tomorrow, there'd be wars over the gate. 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:29.000 And who gets in? 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:32.000 Thank goodness, we're not in charge of who gets to heaven. 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:35.000 When we decide we're in charge of who gets to heaven, 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:39.000 we will stop understanding each other very quickly. 00:06:39.000 --> 00:06:41.000 But here, it's not us getting to heaven. 00:06:41.000 --> 00:06:44.000 It's the descent of the Holy Spirit. 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:46.000 It's God coming to us. 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:49.000 And you know where it can be very easy to be judgmental 00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:52.000 when you think you're getting yourself to heaven. 00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:55.000 I've done the right thing my whole life, but those people over there, 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:58.000 and I don't know why I always pick these people, but you know. 00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:01.000 But you know, those people over there, 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:03.000 I don't know if they're doing the right thing. 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:07.000 But when it's God coming down to us, and we have to go, 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:09.000 I don't merit this gift from God. 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:13.000 It's a much—it's a less satisfying emotionally. 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:15.000 It's less satisfying an answer to say, 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:18.000 I was given completely a gift to heaven, and I don't merit it at all, 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:21.000 but they merit it even less. 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:24.000 Now that just doesn't satisfy us as much. 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:27.000 So we choose usually to build towers 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:30.000 rather than to be open to God coming down to us. 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:32.000 But we can't get there. 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:35.000 We have to be open to a gift of grace. 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:37.000 And once we're open to it, 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:40.000 it's very hard to resent that other people have it. 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:42.000 It's why the Spirit builds community. 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:45.000 It's why it comes down, and it lives in the community. 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:49.000 It's why all of a sudden people who weren't understanding each other understand. 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:51.000 And I don't know the magic of the story. 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:55.000 I don't know if they, you know, auditorily heard, 00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:59.000 physically heard words in their own language, or they just understood. 00:07:59.000 --> 00:08:03.000 You know, I had yesterday what I would consider a Pentecost experience. 00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:06.000 I was at the funeral for Father Peter's mother. 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:09.000 She passed away last week, nine weeks after dad. 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:11.000 And so, you know, the family is very upset. 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:14.000 Well, Father Peter, he did something I could never, 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:17.000 I would never even attempt to pull off at a parent's funeral 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:21.000 because he sang a song that was clearly special to his mother. 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:25.000 And he pulls out this mic, and you know, he's getting the mic ready. 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:30.000 And now the whole service, I should tell you why it's a Pentecost experience. 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:32.000 The whole service was in Vietnamese. 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:36.000 There were only two awkward, tall, blonde people on the altar 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:38.000 of about 12 Vietnamese priests. 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:40.000 I was one of them, you know. 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:44.000 And, you know, didn't understand a word of it, but it's the Mass. 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:47.000 You know the Mass, and you know when we're at the Alleluia, 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:49.000 and you know we're at the Gospel reading, and you know the Mass. 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:51.000 And so we're going along. 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:54.000 So the homily, all in Vietnamese, I don't have a clue what's going on. 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:57.000 And he's getting out this microphone, and I see them setting up the music, 00:08:57.000 --> 00:08:59.000 and I think, he's gonna sing. 00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:02.000 I'm probably one of six people in the room that didn't understand the homily, 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:04.000 so I didn't know he was gonna sing. 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:05.000 And I don't know what the song was. 00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:06.000 It was a Vietnamese song. 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:07.000 It was in Vietnamese. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:08.000 The music starts. 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:09.000 He starts singing. 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:11.000 And I'm listening to it, and I'm kind of listening. 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:17.000 And I look out, and every, I would say literally 95% of the people are Vietnamese. 00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:23.000 Every Vietnamese woman in the place just starts wailing and sobbing at this song. 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:26.000 And I'm like, wow, this is really good. 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:28.000 I wish I knew what it was, you know. 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:29.000 But it didn't matter. 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:31.000 It hit me a moment later. 00:09:31.000 --> 00:09:35.000 Oh, it's Vietnamese Danny Boy. 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:39.000 You know, if that was an Irish funeral and someone got up and sang Danny Boy, 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:41.000 everyone would go to pieces. 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:44.000 And I thought, every culture has these things. 00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:46.000 And I don't need to understand the words. 00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:48.000 I understand what's going on. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:50.000 It's not that he's saying something. 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:54.000 I don't need to go find the lyrics to that because it's gonna be the best poem ever. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:58.000 It's a song they all know, and that song has a history with them. 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:03.000 And the song, you know, we know these things in our own culture. 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:10.000 No one has ever tried to tout that the song Happy Birthday is a great piece of music. 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:13.000 But it's the only song acceptable when the cake comes out with the candles 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:17.000 because it ties you to every other experience of that. 00:10:17.000 --> 00:10:23.000 And so, you know, sometimes you understand if you're just open to being there, 00:10:23.000 --> 00:10:27.000 to receiving, and that really is a Pentecost moment 00:10:27.000 --> 00:10:30.000 when we start to understand the Spirit between us. 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:34.000 Because when we look inside and go, I'm gonna have this inward journey of the Spirit, 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:37.000 I'm always fascinated when people will say, 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:39.000 I'm really trying to become more spiritual. 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:43.000 Because if I were to ask them, what would that look like? 00:10:43.000 --> 00:10:44.000 How will you know? 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:48.000 If tomorrow you wake up more spiritual, will you feel differently? 00:10:48.000 --> 00:10:50.000 Will you have a different emotion? 00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:52.000 Will people not irritate you? 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:55.000 Have you simply not noticed that people aren't around? 00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:58.000 You know, what will it be to be spiritual? 00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:01.000 If you woke up today more spiritual, how would you have known? 00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:04.000 So we've got this goal there that we're not— 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:07.000 it's because spirituality is nebulous by nature. 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:11.000 But Pentecost is pretty solid for us. 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:14.000 It says to you, you know, this is a communal thing. 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:16.000 You'll know that you're being more spiritual 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:19.000 when the people around you are being helped more. 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:23.000 Your deeper spirituality is not for you. 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:25.000 It's for those around you. 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:27.000 And so where prayer is a great thing, 00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:30.000 people who start to multiply their prayers, 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:32.000 you know, people say, well, you know, rather than one rosary, 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:34.000 I'm up to 20 rosaries a day. 00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:37.000 We start to do these things instead of getting out into the world. 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:41.000 I'll go to Mass more often rather than going out and doing things. 00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:45.000 Now it can empower those things and it becomes a really nice balance. 00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:47.000 But sometimes we kind of think, 00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:50.000 well, I'm going to become more spiritual with this inward journey. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:53.000 Spirituality drives us out towards one another 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:56.000 because it's given to the community. 00:11:56.000 --> 00:11:59.000 The Spirit belongs to none of us and all of us. 00:11:59.000 --> 00:12:03.000 When I was a—I can't remember what grade, 00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:05.000 but I remember the first time I was horrified 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:08.000 by the fact that I was going to have to do a project with some other students. 00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:11.000 And we were just going to get whatever grade they all did. 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:13.000 And, you know, if you happen to have someone in your group 00:12:13.000 --> 00:12:16.000 that was not going to pull their weight, your grade would suffer. 00:12:17.000 --> 00:12:21.000 I grew up in an individualistic society. That just wasn't fair. 00:12:21.000 --> 00:12:25.000 It never occurred to me that your ability to work with the group 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:28.000 might be what was being graded 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:31.000 and might have actually been more important than science. 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:34.000 You know, it horrified me. 00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:38.000 What do you mean that my mark is going to depend on other people? 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:42.000 What if, as the church has taught in the past, 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:46.000 what if we get to heaven as a community or not at all? 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:49.000 What would that do to us? 00:12:49.000 --> 00:12:51.000 I think most people would be like, 00:12:51.000 --> 00:12:53.000 oh, wait, wait, wait, that is not Christian. 00:12:53.000 --> 00:12:57.000 Actually it is, but for us it's horrifying because it's not American. 00:12:59.000 --> 00:13:01.000 It's not American. 00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:04.000 I get ahead and I don't care, you know, that's kind of our thing is 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:07.000 you go out and you work hard and you can help others if you want, 00:13:07.000 --> 00:13:08.000 but I can get ahead on my own. 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:12.000 Actually, Christianity, the huge difference in Catholicism 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:14.000 and other versions of Christianity 00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:20.000 is that Catholicism is not all my personal walk with Jesus. 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:23.000 That's other takes on Christ. 00:13:23.000 --> 00:13:26.000 It's my personal walk with Jesus, my personal walk with the Lord. 00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:29.000 No, no, we are saved in community. 00:13:29.000 --> 00:13:31.000 It's very different. 00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:33.000 It's why we come together for the Eucharist. 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:35.000 It's why we come, you know, we come to be bonded together 00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:38.000 and find Jesus in the group. 00:13:38.000 --> 00:13:42.000 And we have to become people of deep understanding. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:45.000 That last little line that says, 00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:47.000 you know, whose sins you retain are retained, 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:49.000 whose sins you forgive are forgiven. 00:13:49.000 --> 00:13:50.000 Very different in this gospel. 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:53.000 You'll notice he doesn't say anything you hold against anyone, 00:13:53.000 --> 00:13:55.000 God will hold against them. 00:13:56.000 --> 00:13:59.000 It's more like he gives you two bottles of medicine. 00:13:59.000 --> 00:14:03.000 He says, now remember, if you use this medicine, people are saved. 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:05.000 And if you use this one, they'll die. 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:09.000 And we walk away thinking he just gave us permission to kill anyone we want. 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:12.000 No, there's a warning in that. 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:16.000 When it says whose sins you retain are retained, that is a warning. 00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:20.000 And I think many versions of Christianity have flipped that on their head. 00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:24.000 They're very happy that we can say, 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:26.000 if we say they're going to hell, they're going to hell. 00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:31.000 I was speaking with a friend of mine who's a priest across the country. 00:14:31.000 --> 00:14:33.000 And we were talking, I can't remember what the topic was. 00:14:33.000 --> 00:14:36.000 And I said, well, you know, we have to be forgiving towards these people and these people. 00:14:36.000 --> 00:14:38.000 And he said, you know, that's not up to us. 00:14:38.000 --> 00:14:39.000 That is a sin against God. 00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:42.000 And I said, well, I thought if we forgave it, it was forgiven. 00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:45.000 We don't like to use that side of the equation. 00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:48.000 What if? 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:50.000 What if then when someone says, but that's a sin. 00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:52.000 Oh, well, we can forgive that. 00:14:53.000 --> 00:14:55.000 Well, we can't forgive it if this isn't. 00:14:55.000 --> 00:14:57.000 No, no, he just says if you forgive it, it's forgiven. 00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:00.000 I don't think we want to use that medicine. 00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:01.000 It's too frightening. 00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:04.000 Because it means if someone isn't forgiven, 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:07.000 it's because of my hardness of heart rather. 00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:08.000 Well, no, it's their sin. 00:15:09.000 --> 00:15:10.000 Can't do anything about it. They're sinners. 00:15:11.000 --> 00:15:14.000 No, our forgiveness is always available if we make it available. 00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:17.000 And when it's not, that speaks of who we are. 00:15:18.000 --> 00:15:22.000 Pentecost is a great end of the Easter season, but it's a tough holiday. 00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:28.000 It reminds us that why most of us look inward, the Spirit is between us. 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:31.000 The Spirit is given to us as a whole. 00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:36.000 And only when we start to open those ears of understanding to one another 00:15:36.000 --> 00:15:40.000 will we ever really understand the texture of the Spirit, 00:15:41.000 --> 00:15:42.000 the shape of the human soul. 00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:48.000 Only then do we start to see the Pentecost vision of the kingdom of God.

Father Pat’s message centers on the communal nature of the Holy Spirit and the transformative power of understanding, forgiveness, and belonging. He challenges the individualistic lens through which many people approach spirituality and underlines that the Spirit is not given for private edification but for the building up of the community. Father Pat confronts difficult scriptural language without denying or altering it, calling instead for honest engagement with the biases of the text and of ourselves. He highlights the Pentecost event not as a miracle of speaking, but as a miracle of listening—a reversal of Babel, where division gave way to unity through shared understanding. Ultimately, Father Pat invites us to recognize that salvation is not achieved in isolation but in communion with others, and that the Spirit’s presence is most fully known not in private mystical experience, but in the grace of shared humanity, mutual forgiveness, and compassionate listening. Father Pat opens with a Gospel reading from John, which recounts the moment when the risen Christ appears to his disciples, breathes the Holy Spirit upon them, and commissions them with the authority to forgive sins. He notes that this passage is read twice during the liturgical year—on the Sunday after Easter and again on Pentecost—each time offering a different lens on the giving of the Spirit. The first, more intimate moment in John contrasts with the dramatic communal outpouring described in Acts. Yet both scenes underscore the same theological truth: the Holy Spirit is not an individual possession but a communal gift intended to bind people together in understanding and mission. Father Pat addresses the problematic language in John's Gospel—specifically the repeated use of "the Jews" in ways that have historically contributed to antisemitism. Rather than avoiding or editing the text, he urges the faithful to confront it head-on, recognizing that bias can infiltrate even sacred scripture. He contextualizes John's language within the historical tensions between early Christianity and Jewish communities, cautioning against the perpetuation of any interpretation that vilifies an entire people. This confrontation with scripture's imperfections becomes a broader theological point: the Spirit opens us to difficult truths, including the need to acknowledge and resist prejudice within ourselves and our traditions. The heart of Father Pat’s homily lies in his critique of how modern culture, especially in the West, elevates individualism at the expense of community. He observes that from a young age, people are taught to see themselves as uniquely special, often to the detriment of shared belonging. This emphasis on uniqueness can isolate rather than unite, making it harder for people to realize that their struggles and insecurities are common experiences. Father Pat proposes that true spiritual growth does not lie in becoming more special or more inwardly focused, but in belonging more deeply to one another. Pentecost, he says, is the celebration of this communal belonging. He reflects on the Pentecost narrative in Acts not as a supernatural event of speaking in tongues, but as a miracle of listening and understanding. The Spirit doesn’t merely bestow eloquence; it opens ears and hearts. This understanding, he argues, is the true reversal of the Tower of Babel—where human pride once led to confusion and division, divine grace now brings clarity and unity. Importantly, this unity is not achieved by human effort or moral superiority but by God’s descent into our midst. We do not climb to heaven; heaven comes to us. This reversal challenges the prideful assumption that we can earn our way to God, and instead calls us to humility and receptivity. Father Pat shares a personal story about attending a Vietnamese funeral where, despite not understanding the language, he was deeply moved by a song that evoked collective grief and love. This, he says, was a Pentecost moment—where understanding transcended language and cultural barriers because hearts were open. Such moments reveal that the Spirit dwells not within individual comprehension but in shared emotional and spiritual resonance. It is not the articulation of theology that matters most, but the ability to empathize, to feel with others, and to be present. He further critiques how people often approach spirituality as a private, internal pursuit. Phrases like "I'm becoming more spiritual" are common, but vague. He challenges his listeners to consider how they would even recognize a more spiritual self. Would they feel more peaceful? Be less irritated by others? Instead, he offers a different metric: true spirituality is known by its impact on others. If your deepened spiritual life does not result in greater compassion, service, and connection, it may not be the Spirit at work. In this way, he reorients spirituality outward, insisting that the Spirit's fruits are communal, not personal. Father Pat also touches on the communal nature of salvation in Catholic theology. Unlike some Christian traditions that emphasize a “personal relationship with Jesus,” Catholicism teaches that we are saved with and through the community. He recalls his childhood reaction to group projects in school—resenting that his grade could be affected by others—but now sees the wisdom in that structure. It teaches that collaboration and mutual responsibility are not just educational tools but spiritual truths. Salvation, he suggests, is not a solo journey but a communal pilgrimage. He concludes with a powerful interpretation of the authority Jesus gives to forgive or retain sins. This is not a license for judgment, but a sobering responsibility. The power to retain sins is a warning, not a privilege. If others are not forgiven, it may be due to our own hard-heartedness, not their unworthiness. He challenges the Church to embrace the radical grace of forgiveness, even when it feels uncomfortable or undeserved. Forgiveness, like understanding, is a gift we receive and a gift we must extend if we are to be faithful to the Spirit of Pentecost. In the end, Father Pat offers a profound vision of Pentecost that is both deeply theological and pastorally grounded. The Spirit is not a private possession but a shared reality. It is not found in self-improvement but in mutual compassion. It is not about building towers to heaven, but about recognizing the God who descends into our midst. It is not about speaking eloquently, but about listening deeply. In a divided world, Pentecost calls us not to be more spiritual in isolation but to be more human together.
