The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you. He will prepare your way as a voice of one crying out in the desert. Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths. John the Baptist appeared in the desert, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to meet him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River. As they acknowledged their sins, John was clothed in camel's hair. With a leather belt around his waist, he fed on locusts and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed. One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Some of you may have heard in the gospel a sort of purposeful mistake that I made. And that is, there's this line where I said, as they acknowledge their sins, John was clothed in camel's hair. Now that sounds like just the most bizarre thing. That's the way it reads. But it has to do with inflection, quite frankly. As they acknowledge their sins is the end of one paragraph. John was clothed in camel's hair is the start of another. I think very few of us, because we're so used to language the way we know it and the modern sort of machinations of language, we are so used to punctuation. Punctuation is even a more recent part of language than when they first started writing down words. And certainly, most of our Hebrew scriptures and Greek scriptures have little, if any, punctuation. And so we get these just constant writing. And to go through them, it can be very tough at times. Many scripture scholars will tell you that this quote from Isaiah, whether it happened in translation or whether it was actually the New Testament writer or whether it was the order of the words, but there is a misplaced comma. You have to give them, let them have that mistake. They misplaced a comma. It's OK because commas didn't exist. But in Isaiah, the word order and some things make it clear that they are not saying, even though it's nice here because they can use it to talk about John the Baptist, a voice of one crying out in the desert. That would be John the Baptist. Behold, prepare the way of the Lord. In Isaiah, the text reads, the voice of one crying, comma, out in the desert, prepare the way of the Lord. It's not the person talking that's out in the desert. It's our preparation. We are called to go out into the wilderness, out of our creature comforts, out of what we're used to, to prepare, to move into something a little different. It's not even a difference between do you have wealth, do you not have wealth, do you have status, do you not have status. When it says out of your comfort zone, wherever your comfort zone is, sometimes we have to prepare for God outside it. Because in our comfort zone, we just don't see things. It's one of the reasons I actually love to get into interfaith dialogue. Sometimes I get an insight about God that I can't get from my own scriptures because I am so familiar with these that as I read line one, the whole story unfolds in my head. And it's like trying to proofread your own work. You're going to see what you think you wrote, no matter how many times you read it. And you have to have, someone said, you have to sit down your work at least a few days until you can forget what you wrote. And then go back and read it and go, maybe that sentence should have a verb. You know, little things like that. But when you read it, you're going to read what you think you just wrote. And when I go to scriptures, people all the time, I'll read a scripture. And I've said this before. We've got so much familiarity with our scripture that I don't really think we even hear it anymore. You know, we can hear a scripture where it says, you know, God said, dash their children against a stone and wipe every one of them out. And we kind of go, the word of the Lord. We're so familiar with them that we don't see some of these stories that should set us on edge. Because familiarity, you know, familiarity does not breed contempt. It just breeds sleep. We kind of just doze right through the things we know real well. And so, you know, this scripture today, especially the first one. The first one, for me, is one of the most known scriptures. Now, not most people would say that. But this section of Isaiah. Because this short reading that was done for us a few minutes ago is about 50 minutes of Handel's Messiah. Every couple lines of this is another aria. I mean, anyone who's heard the Messiah is familiar. I mean, we get to the, you know, like a shepherd, he feeds his flock. That's one of the big arias from it. You know, go up to the high mountain, the big aria. Whenever I'm in the Messiah, this year I'm the tenor again. Thank you, Jesus. Last year I agreed. I don't know if any of you remembered, but I do this interfaith Messiah last year because I was just feeling like I was really that good. They said, oh, you know, we've got all these tenors and we don't have a single baritone soloist. I'm like, I can do the baritone. And I spent Advent last year trying to talk like this so I could sing that piece. And, you know, people came up, they were so complimentary. But it's a different kind of compliment as a musician when people go, you really, you got through that just fine. You know, not exactly what you're hoping for, not something you want to see, you know, in the New York Times. The performers all got through just fine, you know. So, but, you know, it's so funny because this year I feel like, oh, I'm back to my voice. That's who I am. And as I come back, it feels a little less familiar than the text I sing every year at the Messiah. And this is the, you know, every valley shall be exalted. Because that is something I've sung often, I've done a tremendous amount of study on that scripture. You know, I, you know, don't like to just go out and I like to know what I'm singing about. And as you get into the rabbinical commentaries on that scripture, we really arrive at an interesting place that most of us aren't ready for. And that is, first, we're so familiar with it, we don't hear it. I mean, Coloradans, instead of saying the word of the Lord, I think Coloradans, if they were listening, would walk out after that scripture. God's vision, put the mountains down, fill in the valleys, get rid of the rivers. And you're like, not in my state, mister. And somehow, the earth is going to be a better place when it looks like a smooth cue ball. And there are no discerning landmarks of any kind. Why is that comforting? Especially when you see things all the way through the Old Testament, we have these moments like, where do they go to encounter God? The mountaintop. You know, these are places of great reverence. The holy mountain of God, well, that's gonna come down. So where do we get all of this? Jerusalem, set on a hill. And so, why this? Well, in this time of Isaiah, all the other historical writings, you'll notice something else. And this is where we really do have to get our mind back into that ancient mindset. This is not only, shockingly for the youth among us, not only is this before computers, but for the adults among us, it's before Ran McNally. No. So, one kingdom, it will say in the scripture, oh, his kingdom went from this mountain to that river, from that river to the sea, from that valley. These, you and I hear, oh, landmarks. They hear borders, divisions. What's happening in this is all the landmarks that exist so I can know where my kingdom ends and your kingdom begins are gone. And that's part of preparing the way. And that's a frightening thought for a world that has become not just dependent upon, but in love with borders. You know, areas that this person's not welcome here and that person can't go there. And most of us, from our vantage point, being in America, we, of course, like one-way borders. And I've noticed no one wants to put borders up that keep us from going to Europe on a yearly basis. We want one-way borders. It's about people coming this direction, and it's interesting when we talk about those borders, we never, ever talk about us crossing borders because we're the good guys. We should be able to go anywhere. And so what happens when the ability to know where one person's, this belongs to me and that belongs to you, and what happens when that border is gone? When the mountains are low and the rivers are filled in and there's no, that was all they had. And those are the markers throughout the Old Testament of the difference between kingdoms. And so what happens when all that goes away? That's the first part. He says, get out of your comfort zone. And then he says, here, here's an image. You really want out of your comfort zone? Take down the fence between you and your neighbor's yard. Oh, good fences make good neighbors. I don't know how to tell people that's not actually in the Bible. You know, but that's the modern vision. The modern vision is good fences make good neighbors. Meaning, you know, we can be good neighbors as soon as we know our differences, where you belong, where I don't belong. It's, everything's about separation. And you know, what if in heaven, what if in heaven there's so much intimacy and there's so much coming together that we don't each get our own little space? You know, in my father's house are many rooms and I get a private one. Also not in scripture. You know, it's this, what does that mean for us? What does that mean? Are we a people that through our life become more comfortable gathering people to ourselves? Or, you know, do we use those wonderful phrases in modern language that allow us to feel okay about pushing people away? I am too set in my ways. You know, those are those things we used to say. Unless you're willing to behave like me, move away. Get away from me at all times. I'm too set in my ways. You know, I don't have to do that anymore. I, my Aunt Lenore, who was really a saint in so many ways, but I remember at her 90th birthday, halfway through the party, she simply stood up and said, I'm going to my room, you can all leave now. And her granddaughter, Nora, was horrified. And of course everyone laughed and she said, she called her Mimi. Mimi, you can not say that sort of things to people, those sorts of things to people. And she said, I'm 90, they'll just think I'm crazy. You know, they'll all put it off to wackiness. I can do whatever. You know, we all sometimes would love that, but the idea that, you know, there's this sort of borders are two ways. We're often not, when someone talks about, if we put it on a personal level, boundaries. It's amazing how many of us will say once in a while, I feel like, you know, this person or that, but they kind of violate some boundaries. We're not always aware of, or even ask, do I violate boundaries? You know, I mean, I've noticed in my life that all of you do, but I don't think I do. Because do I violate boundaries rarely comes up in our mind. I think it's the essence of all the scandals going on in Hollywood and Washington and throughout the private sector is a lot of people who just, it never occurs to them to ask if they're crossing a boundary. You know, it's gotta be a two way thing. We've gotta learn to what it means to truly live with one another in a world. And to know that that's how we build the kingdom of God. And so, you know, when we get this reading, we think, you know, it's time to go out and think, are boundaries something I use to help me live well with others, or are boundaries what keeps me safe from the rest of you? You know, if safe from other people is my biggest concern, then heaven is not a country for me. Safety from everyone else, you guys stay away. You know, safety in my life from someone. Oh, they're a little uncomfortable to be around. This, how do we use our boundaries? You know, I think they're a great, healthy thing. I think it's good when we call our own behavior and others into question. It's another thing when this is what I use to write people off. And I think most of us can look back in our lives and see people, even if it wasn't a dramatic moment, that we were just as comfortable writing out of our lives. You know, sometimes there's a real toxicity and it has to happen. But more often than not, it's simply, you know, I have no room for others. I mean, I have room for people that look like others as long as they behave like me. You know, those are, you know, I always call those, you know, those aren't really others. Those are just disguised versions of me in the world. And they make wonderful friends. You know, just other versions of me. But others, that's something different. And it's the heart of our journey in this world. Anyone who has ever been in love for a moment knows, I mean, I won't say everyone, but anyone who isn't like really already been diagnosed as an extreme narcissist. No one as a teenager says, she reminds me of me, I'm in love. I hope. What it is, there's another person in the world in love with me. We want to go out and find another person in our life. It makes something bigger. A friend of mine became a grandfather this week and his daughter wrote him this note. The woman needs to do some serious writing. But she said, you know, I'm now holding this child in my arms for the first time and for the first time in my life, I know what it means that my heart is no longer inside me. You know. Now, of course, he read this to a group of men and it took us about 30 seconds to get to, you read that back to her when they're 13. We were a little uncomfortable sitting with something that goopy. But it was an interesting thing. The boundary was gone. My heart is no longer inside me. It's the essence of this reading today. This every valley is gonna come down. Our heart as individuals, as a people, as a church cannot be always inside us. It has to move out beyond that. And when we start to do that and start to really take down those divisions between people, as St. Paul said, the walls we build between us. When we start to really bring those down, we finally get a vision. This is the world we're called to build. This is the vision that Jesus left us. We may have changed it radically when we married our religion to imperial Europe at one point. But the gospel still calls us to find that religion where our heart can be outside of ourselves. As Jesus's was, you know, all through his life, all through his death and resurrection, that's the heart we follow. And if we ever get to that point in our deep moments of meditation where we think we've found our center, it's a nice thing.
