Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. He hardly knew what to say. They were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them. And from the cloud came a voice. This is my beloved son. Listen to him. Suddenly, looking around, they saw no one any longer but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Every year in Lent, we get, in the second week, we always get the transfiguration. It's a pattern, a rhythm to Lent that always the second week, we have this, and we either get Mark's version or Matthew's version or Luke's, depending on the year. And they're remarkably similar in some of the details. What we get very different are the readings that accompany them in the liturgy, and this is probably my least favorite year. We get this horrific story of Abraham and Isaac that paints a picture of this sort of despotic, capricious God who tells Abraham to kill his son. And we have to approach those readings with a full understanding that the Bible is a compendium of images of God. And they're not all equal. And there is a development. And the earliest stories, which this is one of, this is one of that first layer of stories, tell us less about God and more about human behavior. But, you know, I mean, you could imagine today this is the image of God used by, you know, shooters at a nightclub, people who want to do racial violence, suicide bombers, God told me to kill someone. We know this is the worst image of God. And everyone says, oh, well, you know, that faith and that religion. No, this one's in ours. This is our faith. And if we don't know it's there so that we can say, yes, we moved beyond that, not only did they move beyond it, they moved beyond it quickly. The same writer writes in Exodus, so even within his own lifetime, the same writer says, thou shalt not commit murder. Well, any way you look at it, had Abraham gone through with this, that would have been murder. In this story, God tells him, commit murder. And the same writer within their lifetime is writing things that say thou shalt not commit murder. So the image of God during this time is developing quickly. If God is telling you to burn books, get medication, that's not God, okay? So when we get these sort of violent voices in our head, that is not God. And so we start with that, and we kind of have to put it aside to look then at this transfiguration, which is a very misunderstood word. Now, for most of us, it's not tragic that it's misunderstood because I'm going to go out on a limb and say, probably one of you, not one of you, has used the word transfigure in a conversation this week. It's not like one of those words we throw around all the time. And when someone does say it's transfigured instead of saying transformed or something else, they're usually putting a religious edge on something. It transfigure kind of makes people think of this Bible story, which is funny because the word is nowhere in the story. It was called, someone, they started calling it the transfiguration years later. It, you know, it doesn't really say he was trans, you know, the Greek, he was transfigured before them. But it says his appearance changed. And so I think where we misunderstand is most of us think of transfiguration as, I mean, so much more complete than other words. It's deeper, it's more profound. It's, you know, it reaches into the very core of who, no, it's the opposite. It's the most shallow transformation you can think of. What transfiguration, figure meaning how we appear in the world, it's our surface. Transfiguration is not Jesus's essence changing at all. It's the outward appearance finally matching what's inside. We transfigure ourselves, you know, Lent's got two kinds of changes going on. We try to do things to make us a better person. But transfiguration is letting the world see the person you are. Letting the core of who you are at this moment come to the surface is transfiguration. So it's not that all of those deeper things. In many ways, it's a surface thing. But it's a deep movement. It's very hard for people to learn to take their core and bring it out into the open. And sometimes our religion fights us on that because people think that their religion calls them to fall in line with one another and appear like one another. This is, you know, people will come to me and say, well, you know, I just don't know if I should receive communion. The community's coming up, and I just don't know because there's this one teaching that I disagree with, and I get mad at this, and I don't always have good thoughts in my head. And I just don't know if I should receive communion with the rest of the community. And I always want to say, what state do you think the rest of the community is in? Doubts, and foibles, and mistakes, and problems. And I think it's so easy because what happens is we sometimes come, and we sit, and we dress up, and we're all ready, and we tell the whole world, this is who I am all the time. And they start to think, oh, I guess that's who I'm supposed to be. And then you're trying to keep up with them, and they're trying to keep up with you, and you've got these two facades racing towards the finish line that have nothing to do with what's going on in our real life. I never tire of telling people that Jesus did not die on the cross to save anyone's facade. The facades are not going to heaven. It's a crucial question in the theology of children. Does my dog go to heaven? For an adult, the bad news is your facade does not go to heaven. And many of us spend more of our lives developing our social presence, our facade, than we do developing our character. And so, you know, we kind of use this to say, you know, one of the reasons Lent is so hard, one of the reasons we have so much trouble transforming who we are is because of the amount of energy we spend not letting people know who we are. When we can let go and transfigure, and you'll notice this happens in the story, just at the front side of Jesus going into that final passion, that final, in other words, I've got some real tough stuff ahead of me, and I have no more energy for the facade. Now, this sort of development in our life where we start to let people know who we truly are is never linear. You know, it's like when people say, when did Jesus know, when did he know he was God? When does that happen in the story? And some very, very well-meaning, you know, scripture scholars will get right up and say, well, it had to be at this point. Oh, no, he had to know in the transfiguration. Well, no, he had to know on the cross. Well, no, he had to know from the moment he was born. They want it linear. If Jesus is human, you know, the much more likely scenario is transfiguration, he knew. Then the next day he got up and thought, am I crazy? No, and then the next day he knew, and the next day maybe he doubted. I mean, that's how that goes. Very few of us have real life-changing epiphanies that we don't back away from and move back into and back away from and move back into. And in this story, it makes it ridiculously clear because Jesus is transfigured, meaning Jesus shows them who he is. He takes that brave step of ridicule of everything else and says, here's who I really am. And they are a little terrified and a little worried, but they accept him. And then the very next line is, but he says, don't tell anyone else. Okay, so not quite ready. It's a process. It takes time. There are days you feel further along and days you come back, but it's got to be our goal. Our goal should be to be transfigured because we can't move into heaven without it. We can't move into heaven if we're still terrified of the world knowing who we are because to live in the light of heaven is to live with perfect knowledge of one another. And I think many of us, just we can't even wrap our minds around. I always say that when you tell Catholics that if they walk into the light of heaven, everyone knows who they are. That's when our Catholic theology kicks in and we say, so now where is purgatory and how long can I stay? Because that's a little frightening. But that's what we're called to do now. Part of our Lenten journey is who we really are brought to the surface. Not, you know, there's a news commentator and I literally, I remember the phrase thinking it was great, can't remember who the commentator is, so sorry to whoever's material I'm stealing. But said one time, you know, catching a lot of flack. I know, a news commentator in this day and age. Catching flack. And it was a woman and she said, you know, I learned a long time ago that what other people think of me is none of my business. I thought, now, you know, if I say to all of you, you know what, your opinion of me, that's not, none of my business, it's not going to affect me, I'm lying to you, but it would be a nice place to be. You know, I would love to get to that point, but we know that there's some of that that is the goal. Because otherwise what happens is our gathering and community becomes, you know, we're supposed to be here for spirituality and growth, and instead, it becomes an opportunity to thicken the facade, rather than peel it away. And then our faith is working against our journey. And so instead, we take this moment every year to say, you know, we've had about a week of Lent, nice time to stop and check and say, now before I keep trying to change myself, how much energy am I wasting hiding myself? Strip away the facade a little. Let the core of who we are come out and speak to the world. That's how we join Jesus.
