Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd followed Him because they saw signs He was performing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples. The Jewish feast of Passover was near, and when Jesus raised His eyes, He saw that a large crowd was coming to Him. So He said to Philip, Where can we buy enough food for them to eat? He said this to test Him because He knew Himself what He was going to do. Philip answered Him, Two hundred days' wages' worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have even a little. One of His disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Him, There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what good are they for so many? Jesus said, Have the people recline. Now there was a great deal of grass in that place, so the men reclined about five thousand in number. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining and also as much of the fish as they wanted. When they had had their fill, He said to His disciples, Gather the fragments left over so that nothing will be wasted. So they collected them and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat. When the people saw the sign He had done, they said, This is truly the prophet, the one who is to come into the world. Since Jesus knew they were going to come and carry Him off and make Him a king, He withdrew to the mountain alone. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ. I have said several times, preaching on this or one of the other versions of it in the other Gospels, but I've said several times over the years that, you know, many people, when you have something that's called a miracle, it's interesting to hear different people's version of what they think actually happened. There are basically a few... We go right to the most magical, wondrous thing we can come up with, which is, I don't know, you know, baskets of food with bread coming out like popcorn. How do we see the miracle happen? What's our vision of what was happening? Did Jesus, you know, cast a spell and now there's more bread and there's more fish? It's not really what the Gospel wants to get us to, and you can tell there's little cultural hints all the way through that we've somewhat lost the cultural awareness of that time. You know, the first thing, he begins his story by setting it up. He says, so they go back across the Sea of Galilee, and every time in John's Gospel they have him take that trip across the water, they're going from, you know, it would be as though instead of in Galilee, this happened in a small town, and it's Jesus continuing to go back and forth across the railroad tracks to those who live on the right side of the tracks and those who live on the wrong side of the tracks. And the right side of this, you know, the people who lived on the other side of Galilee, now we're getting into Samaritans and all these people whose religion had been mixed with local religions, and they were very, very much looked down upon by the religiously righteous, you know, on the other side of the Galilean Sea. So they go back and forth, and every time they're going back and forth, it's a sign from the author that he's going back and forth between, you know, those who live on the right side of Galilee and those who live on the wrong side. So first he goes over into a mixed crowd, and the crowds have followed him over, so now we have this, it's a disaster. The good people and the bad people are with each other. What are you going to do now? Well, the problem, you know, that we get in this is we think, oh, my gosh, there's all these people. How are you going to feed them? These were not dumb people. These people lived in this desert community their whole life. No one went out on that trip without bringing provisions. They had food. They didn't have it out on display. They had food, and they were going to do what they always did because of the kosher law. They were going to run off and find an area where they could eat alone because one of the first parts of kosher is not simply that the dairy's on this plate and the meat's on that plate, and you don't eat pork, and you don't do... Back then, the first rule of kosher was you do not sit down at table, you do not eat and share a meal with people who are not kosher. In many ways, that was probably the cultural purpose of kosher was to kind of keep the communities and the bloodlines pure in their minds because if you can't sit down to meal and share a meal together, chances of getting married are not good. Everything's going to stay separate. And so kosher was a keeping our tribe our tribe sort of thing. And Jesus, you know, the miracle that needs to happen here is that people need to actually put down, even within our religion, they have to put down anything that's building walls and be ready to share. And so as the story unfolds, you know, a couple of interesting things happen. First, he kind of asks Philip the question, and then Andrew steps forward. Now, Andrew has a reputation. Most of us don't see it because we only get three little stories about Andrew in all of scripture, but they're the same story each time. Every time Andrew is there, Andrew brings someone to Jesus. The first story, Andrew brings Peter to Jesus. Andrew meets Jesus first, and then he goes and finds his brother Peter and says, you got to meet this guy. Now, you can imagine what happens, not that there's ever competition between siblings in the world, but Andrew brings Peter to Jesus, and over time, it is Peter who becomes sort of the number one of the group. Andrew could have had a much sort of snarkier reaction to that, but the next time we see Andrew, he's just bringing the next person to Jesus, and he brings this boy here to Jesus and then backs off, and it's none of his business what happens. And later in Acts, he'll bring someone to the apostles to be baptized, and then once he's baptized, it's none of his business. He's someone that trusts the Spirit. He brings people. He shares his faith. He introduces them, and then he's not upset if their journey looks different than his. So Andrew's this interesting character, and so in this case, you know, Andrew, it's kind of, it's almost comical if you read it a little too literally because, you know, they say, there's 4,000. Philip has just laid it out. Philip is sort of Eeyore, and Andrew is Tigger in this. He goes, there's 4,000 people. No matter what, no matter what, there's not going to be enough food. And Andrew says, I know a guy with a couple loaves of bread. You kind of have to love that vision of Andrew. I know a guy, and he's got not nearly enough. It's very clear. It tells you this is a boy, not a man, a boy. Why? Because in the culture and in the way this literature is written, what they mean is someone who's young enough that they have not made their bar mitzvah yet. So he's not, he's not beholding to the religious laws. He doesn't have to keep kosher because he has not made his bar mitzvah. He cannot be held accountable to the law at that age. So he's willing to share what he has, and the miracle is that that becomes a teaching moment for the community, and when everyone starts to share what they have, there is more than enough for everyone. See, I think in our minds, we like to rewrite that into Jesus waved his magic hands and made enough food for everyone, and therefore when we read that, our reaction should be, isn't God wonderful? Which is an okay reaction. But when you see what the gospel writer's written, then your reaction is, oh, I'm supposed to share what I have. And when most of us are given the choice of share what you have with the world, or can't I just sit here and go, isn't God wonderful? We like the second interpretation because it's a pretty stained glass vision of God that doesn't call us to anything. The other one says, when we all share what we have, there's more than enough for everyone. And more than that, it shows this young boy as a character that we're all called to be. This boy does not have the answer. He does not have the solution. He does not fix the problem. He's just part of the solution. He's part of fixing the problem. How often do people say, well, look, I could really give here and help here, but it's just never gonna be enough to fix poverty. That's right. You're only going to be a part of the solution. And sometimes we use that I can't fix it all as an excuse not to help, not to be a part of a solution. You know, maybe in the grand scheme of things, you only nudge the world the slightest bit, but that doesn't mean you're not called to give what you have to be part of a solution. This is, in a sense, the meaning of Pentecost. There's a moment in our scriptural development, in a moment in our church, where Jesus says to the early, you know, disciples, I have to leave so that the Spirit can come. Now, I've told you before, I just, when I first read that, I thought, what, is there like a two-thirds rule for the Trinity that only one can be out at a time? Why does Jesus have to go so that the Spirit can come? It kind of makes it sound like there's a control issue going on in heaven, and you don't allow two of them out at once. No, no. What he's saying, because we know that from the beginning of time, our belief is the Spirit is everywhere. And the Spirit was everywhere even when Jesus was here. And Jesus is everywhere, and God is everywhere. So what does it mean? What he means is, until I'm out of your sight, you will not be open to the Spirit. Because who is gonna wrestle with the Spirit when you've got easy-access Jesus walking next to you answering questions? And what we like about the Jesus model is I can just ask a question and get the answer, and all we have to do is keep running to Jesus and running to Jesus. And Jesus says, you know, the Spirit will belong to the community. When we do things in the Spirit, we have to do them together. You know, if we just elect the next Jesus, then it's Jesus' job to do all the miracles. But when you work with the Spirit, your access to God comes together. The solutions we find, we find together. And ever since the Spirit came, our church and every other has been very busy at trying to ignore the Spirit and come up with substitute Jesuses. You know, who's our next leader? Who's the next person that's gonna tell us what to do? You know, Pope Francis, back when he wrote a letter on one of the many sort of hot topic controversial issues, and I can't remember which one this was, but I was listening to someone talk about what he said. And he said, you know, the problem right now for the church is that half the church, not an even half, but you know, somewhere, a big group in the church that is conservative thinks he's gone too far. And a big group in the church that's liberal thinks he didn't go far enough. But both groups are children waiting for daddy to tell them what they believe. And that's what Francis is trying to fix. He wants us to be people of the Spirit, not, can we get another Jesus? Just keep sending us another guru, another elder, another minister, another pastor, another, can you just send us another Jesus to follow? And the Pentecost era of the church is, no, it's the Spirit. You're going to have to solve this together because the Spirit will not work individually without bringing you together. And so we have this moment which people will often see as a foreshadowing of the Eucharist, but it's more than that. It's also a foreshadowing of Pentecost. It's one person may have given them an example, but when they all realize they have enough, it's not until the group as a whole starts to involve themselves that the solution presents itself. And so we ask God to make us people who can put down enough of our ego to still want to be part of a solution, even though no one's ever going to erect a monument to me because I was the solution. You know, that's trying to be the Jesus character rather than trying to live in the Spirit. The Spirit says the solutions are there when you come together. The solutions are there when you share what you have. It is the most difficult thing to teach singers is that most singers' voices are getting shaky and falling apart at the end of lines and they can't find enough breath, not because they're not taking in enough breath. Most singers do not get rid of enough breath before they take the next breath. They don't exhaust the breath they have. They, you know... And we teach them to do that. You know, I was going to, you know, write a thesis in college, just no one was interested, on, um... I came up with a lot of those that got rejected. No, but... On the fact that warm-ups, if we don't handle them right, warm-ups teach us to sing badly because, you know, we're taught to, from high school on, we go, Ah, ah, ah. No one needs a whole breath for five notes. No one. And so, it's what we call stacking breath, and soon, about 90% of their lungs is full of air that's been in there for three minutes with no oxygen, and they just keep filling up the top 10% instead of getting rid of what they have so they can take in something new. That's that model of sharing. We give up what we have knowing we won't be the solution, but being part of the solution is living in the Spirit.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 1.0, "text": " The Lord be WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.000 The Lord be with you. 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:02.000 And with your spirit. 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:05.000 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:08.000 Glory to you, O Lord. 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:10.000 Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. 00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:13.000 A large crowd followed Him because they saw signs 00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:15.000 He was performing on the sick. 00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:17.000 Jesus went up on the mountain, 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:20.000 and there He sat down with His disciples. 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:22.000 The Jewish feast of Passover was near, 00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:24.000 and when Jesus raised His eyes, 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:26.000 He saw that a large crowd was coming to Him. 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:28.000 So He said to Philip, 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:31.000 Where can we buy enough food for them to eat? 00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:32.000 He said this to test Him 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:36.000 because He knew Himself what He was going to do. 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:37.000 Philip answered Him, 00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:39.000 Two hundred days' wages' worth of food 00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:43.000 would not be enough for each of them to have even a little. 00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:45.000 One of His disciples, Andrew, 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:48.000 the brother of Simon Peter, said to Him, 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:51.000 There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, 00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:54.000 but what good are they for so many? 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:57.000 Jesus said, Have the people recline. 00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:00.000 Now there was a great deal of grass in that place, 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:03.000 so the men reclined about five thousand in number. 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:05.000 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, 00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:08.000 and distributed them to those who were reclining 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:11.000 and also as much of the fish as they wanted. 00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:16.000 When they had had their fill, He said to His disciples, 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:19.000 Gather the fragments left over so that nothing will be wasted. 00:01:19.000 --> 00:01:22.000 So they collected them and filled twelve wicker baskets 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:24.000 with fragments from five barley loaves 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:27.000 that had been more than they could eat. 00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:30.000 When the people saw the sign He had done, they said, 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:34.000 This is truly the prophet, the one who is to come into the world. 00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:37.000 Since Jesus knew they were going to come and carry Him off 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:42.000 and make Him a king, He withdrew to the mountain alone. 00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:44.000 The Gospel of the Lord. 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:47.000 Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:56.000 I have said several times, 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:58.000 preaching on this or one of the other versions of it 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:00.000 in the other Gospels, 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:02.000 but I've said several times over the years that, you know, 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:05.000 many people, when you have something that's called a miracle, 00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:08.000 it's interesting to hear different people's version 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:11.000 of what they think actually happened. 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:15.000 There are basically a few... 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:18.000 We go right to the most magical, wondrous thing 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:22.000 we can come up with, which is, I don't know, 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:27.000 you know, baskets of food with bread coming out like popcorn. 00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:29.000 How do we see the miracle happen? 00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:32.000 What's our vision of what was happening? 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:34.000 Did Jesus, you know, cast a spell 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:37.000 and now there's more bread and there's more fish? 00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:41.000 It's not really what the Gospel wants to get us to, 00:02:41.000 --> 00:02:43.000 and you can tell there's little cultural hints 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.000 all the way through that we've somewhat lost 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:48.000 the cultural awareness of that time. 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:51.000 You know, the first thing, he begins his story 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:52.000 by setting it up. 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:55.000 He says, so they go back across the Sea of Galilee, 00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:57.000 and every time in John's Gospel 00:02:57.000 --> 00:02:59.000 they have him take that trip across the water, 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:02.000 they're going from, you know, 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:05.000 it would be as though instead of in Galilee, 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:07.000 this happened in a small town, 00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:09.000 and it's Jesus continuing to go back and forth 00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:11.000 across the railroad tracks 00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:13.000 to those who live on the right side of the tracks 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:16.000 and those who live on the wrong side of the tracks. 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:17.000 And the right side of this, you know, 00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:20.000 the people who lived on the other side of Galilee, 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:22.000 now we're getting into Samaritans 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:24.000 and all these people whose religion 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:26.000 had been mixed with local religions, 00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:29.000 and they were very, very much looked down upon 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:31.000 by the religiously righteous, you know, 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:34.000 on the other side of the Galilean Sea. 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:36.000 So they go back and forth, 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:38.000 and every time they're going back and forth, 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.000 it's a sign from the author 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:43.000 that he's going back and forth between, you know, 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:45.000 those who live on the right side of Galilee 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:47.000 and those who live on the wrong side. 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:49.000 So first he goes over into a mixed crowd, 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:51.000 and the crowds have followed him over, 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:53.000 so now we have this, it's a disaster. 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:56.000 The good people and the bad people are with each other. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:59.000 What are you going to do now? 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:03.000 Well, the problem, you know, that we get in this 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:05.000 is we think, oh, my gosh, there's all these people. 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:07.000 How are you going to feed them? 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:09.000 These were not dumb people. 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:11.000 These people lived in this desert community 00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:13.000 their whole life. 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:18.000 No one went out on that trip without bringing provisions. 00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:20.000 They had food. 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:22.000 They didn't have it out on display. 00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:24.000 They had food, and they were going to do 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:27.000 what they always did because of the kosher law. 00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:29.000 They were going to run off and find an area 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:31.000 where they could eat alone 00:04:31.000 --> 00:04:33.000 because one of the first parts of kosher 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:36.000 is not simply that the dairy's on this plate 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:37.000 and the meat's on that plate, 00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:39.000 and you don't eat pork, and you don't do... 00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:41.000 Back then, the first rule of kosher was 00:04:41.000 --> 00:04:43.000 you do not sit down at table, 00:04:43.000 --> 00:04:45.000 you do not eat and share a meal 00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:47.000 with people who are not kosher. 00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:49.000 In many ways, that was probably 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:51.000 the cultural purpose of kosher 00:04:51.000 --> 00:04:54.000 was to kind of keep the communities 00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:57.000 and the bloodlines pure in their minds 00:04:57.000 --> 00:05:00.000 because if you can't sit down to meal 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:02.000 and share a meal together, 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:05.000 chances of getting married are not good. 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:09.000 Everything's going to stay separate. 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:12.000 And so kosher was a 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:17.000 keeping our tribe our tribe sort of thing. 00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:20.000 And Jesus, you know, 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:23.000 the miracle that needs to happen here 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:26.000 is that people need to actually put down, 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:28.000 even within our religion, 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:30.000 they have to put down anything that's building walls 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:32.000 and be ready to share. 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:34.000 And so as the story unfolds, 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:36.000 you know, a couple of interesting things happen. 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:38.000 First, he kind of asks Philip the question, 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:40.000 and then Andrew steps forward. 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:42.000 Now, Andrew has a reputation. 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:43.000 Most of us don't see it 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:45.000 because we only get three little stories 00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:46.000 about Andrew in all of scripture, 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:49.000 but they're the same story each time. 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:52.000 Every time Andrew is there, 00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:55.000 Andrew brings someone to Jesus. 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.000 The first story, Andrew brings Peter to Jesus. 00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:01.000 Andrew meets Jesus first, 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:04.000 and then he goes and finds his brother Peter and says, 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:06.000 you got to meet this guy. 00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:08.000 Now, you can imagine what happens, 00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:10.000 not that there's ever competition 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:13.000 between siblings in the world, 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:16.000 but Andrew brings Peter to Jesus, 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:18.000 and over time, it is Peter 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:22.000 who becomes sort of the number one of the group. 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:25.000 Andrew could have had 00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.000 a much sort of snarkier reaction to that, 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:31.000 but the next time we see Andrew, 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:33.000 he's just bringing the next person to Jesus, 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:36.000 and he brings this boy here to Jesus 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:37.000 and then backs off, 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:39.000 and it's none of his business what happens. 00:06:39.000 --> 00:06:40.000 And later in Acts, 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:42.000 he'll bring someone to the apostles to be baptized, 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:44.000 and then once he's baptized, 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:45.000 it's none of his business. 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:48.000 He's someone that trusts the Spirit. 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:50.000 He brings people. 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:51.000 He shares his faith. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:53.000 He introduces them, 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:54.000 and then he's not upset 00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:57.000 if their journey looks different than his. 00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:59.000 So Andrew's this interesting character, 00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:01.000 and so in this case, you know, Andrew, 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:03.000 it's kind of, it's almost comical 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:05.000 if you read it a little too literally 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:06.000 because, you know, they say, 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:07.000 there's 4,000. 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:09.000 Philip has just laid it out. 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:12.000 Philip is sort of Eeyore, 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:15.000 and Andrew is Tigger in this. 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:17.000 He goes, there's 4,000 people. 00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:18.000 No matter what, 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:19.000 no matter what, 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:21.000 there's not going to be enough food. 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:22.000 And Andrew says, 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:28.000 I know a guy with a couple loaves of bread. 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:31.000 You kind of have to love that vision of Andrew. 00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:33.000 I know a guy, 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:36.000 and he's got not nearly enough. 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:37.000 It's very clear. 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:39.000 It tells you this is a boy, 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:40.000 not a man, a boy. 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:41.000 Why? 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:43.000 Because in the culture 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:45.000 and in the way this literature is written, 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:47.000 what they mean is 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:48.000 someone who's young enough 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:51.000 that they have not made their bar mitzvah yet. 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:52.000 So he's not, 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:56.000 he's not beholding to the religious laws. 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:59.000 He doesn't have to keep kosher 00:07:59.000 --> 00:08:02.000 because he has not made his bar mitzvah. 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:05.000 He cannot be held accountable to the law 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:06.000 at that age. 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:09.000 So he's willing to share what he has, 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:11.000 and the miracle is that 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:14.000 that becomes a teaching moment for the community, 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:16.000 and when everyone starts to share what they have, 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:20.000 there is more than enough for everyone. 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:21.000 See, I think in our minds, 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:23.000 we like to rewrite that into 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:25.000 Jesus waved his magic hands 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:26.000 and made enough food for everyone, 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:28.000 and therefore when we read that, 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:29.000 our reaction should be, 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:31.000 isn't God wonderful? 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:34.000 Which is an okay reaction. 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:37.000 But when you see what the gospel writer's written, 00:08:37.000 --> 00:08:38.000 then your reaction is, 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:42.000 oh, I'm supposed to share what I have. 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:44.000 And when most of us are given the choice of 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:46.000 share what you have with the world, 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:47.000 or can't I just sit here and go, 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:50.000 isn't God wonderful? 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:53.000 We like the second interpretation 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:57.000 because it's a pretty stained glass vision of God 00:08:57.000 --> 00:09:00.000 that doesn't call us to anything. 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:01.000 The other one says, 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:03.000 when we all share what we have, 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:07.000 there's more than enough for everyone. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:08.000 And more than that, 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:10.000 it shows this young boy as a character 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:12.000 that we're all called to be. 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:16.000 This boy does not have the answer. 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:18.000 He does not have the solution. 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:21.000 He does not fix the problem. 00:09:21.000 --> 00:09:23.000 He's just part of the solution. 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:25.000 He's part of fixing the problem. 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:27.000 How often do people say, 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:30.000 well, look, I could really give here and help here, 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:34.000 but it's just never gonna be enough to fix poverty. 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:35.000 That's right. 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:39.000 You're only going to be a part of the solution. 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:42.000 And sometimes we use that I can't fix it all 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:45.000 as an excuse not to help, 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:48.000 not to be a part of a solution. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:52.000 You know, maybe in the grand scheme of things, 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:55.000 you only nudge the world the slightest bit, 00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:57.000 but that doesn't mean you're not called 00:09:57.000 --> 00:10:03.000 to give what you have to be part of a solution. 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:06.000 This is, in a sense, the meaning of Pentecost. 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:09.000 There's a moment in our scriptural development, 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:11.000 in a moment in our church, 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:15.000 where Jesus says to the early, you know, disciples, 00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:18.000 I have to leave so that the Spirit can come. 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:20.000 Now, I've told you before, I just, 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:22.000 when I first read that, I thought, 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:24.000 what, is there like a two-thirds rule for the Trinity 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:28.000 that only one can be out at a time? 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:32.000 Why does Jesus have to go so that the Spirit can come? 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:34.000 It kind of makes it sound like 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:37.000 there's a control issue going on in heaven, 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:41.000 and you don't allow two of them out at once. 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:42.000 No, no. 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:44.000 What he's saying, because we know that 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:46.000 from the beginning of time, our belief is 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:48.000 the Spirit is everywhere. 00:10:48.000 --> 00:10:52.000 And the Spirit was everywhere even when Jesus was here. 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:56.000 And Jesus is everywhere, and God is everywhere. 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:57.000 So what does it mean? 00:10:57.000 --> 00:11:00.000 What he means is, until I'm out of your sight, 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:03.000 you will not be open to the Spirit. 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:05.000 Because who is gonna wrestle with the Spirit 00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:07.000 when you've got easy-access Jesus 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:11.000 walking next to you answering questions? 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:14.000 And what we like about the Jesus model is 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:16.000 I can just ask a question and get the answer, 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:18.000 and all we have to do is keep running to Jesus 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:19.000 and running to Jesus. 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:20.000 And Jesus says, you know, 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:24.000 the Spirit will belong to the community. 00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:26.000 When we do things in the Spirit, 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:28.000 we have to do them together. 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:32.000 You know, if we just elect the next Jesus, 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:36.000 then it's Jesus' job to do all the miracles. 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:37.000 But when you work with the Spirit, 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:40.000 your access to God comes together. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:43.000 The solutions we find, we find together. 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:45.000 And ever since the Spirit came, 00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:48.000 our church and every other has been very busy 00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:50.000 at trying to ignore the Spirit 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:53.000 and come up with substitute Jesuses. 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:55.000 You know, who's our next leader? 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:58.000 Who's the next person that's gonna tell us what to do? 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:00.000 You know, Pope Francis, 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:02.000 back when he wrote a letter on 00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:06.000 one of the many sort of hot topic controversial issues, 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:07.000 and I can't remember which one this was, 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:11.000 but I was listening to someone talk about what he said. 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:12.000 And he said, you know, 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:15.000 the problem right now for the church 00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:17.000 is that half the church, 00:12:17.000 --> 00:12:19.000 not an even half, but you know, 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:21.000 somewhere, a big group in the church 00:12:21.000 --> 00:12:24.000 that is conservative thinks he's gone too far. 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:26.000 And a big group in the church that's liberal 00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:29.000 thinks he didn't go far enough. 00:12:29.000 --> 00:12:32.000 But both groups are children waiting for daddy 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:35.000 to tell them what they believe. 00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:39.000 And that's what Francis is trying to fix. 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:41.000 He wants us to be people of the Spirit, 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:43.000 not, can we get another Jesus? 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:46.000 Just keep sending us another guru, another elder, 00:12:46.000 --> 00:12:49.000 another minister, another pastor, another, 00:12:49.000 --> 00:12:52.000 can you just send us another Jesus to follow? 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:55.000 And the Pentecost era of the church is, 00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:56.000 no, it's the Spirit. 00:12:56.000 --> 00:12:59.000 You're going to have to solve this together 00:12:59.000 --> 00:13:03.000 because the Spirit will not work individually 00:13:03.000 --> 00:13:05.000 without bringing you together. 00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:09.000 And so we have this moment which people will often see 00:13:09.000 --> 00:13:11.000 as a foreshadowing of the Eucharist, 00:13:11.000 --> 00:13:12.000 but it's more than that. 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:15.000 It's also a foreshadowing of Pentecost. 00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:19.000 It's one person may have given them an example, 00:13:19.000 --> 00:13:21.000 but when they all realize they have enough, 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:24.000 it's not until the group as a whole 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:26.000 starts to involve themselves 00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:29.000 that the solution presents itself. 00:13:29.000 --> 00:13:31.000 And so we ask God to make us people 00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:33.000 who can put down enough of our ego 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:37.000 to still want to be part of a solution, 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:40.000 even though no one's ever going to erect a monument to me 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:43.000 because I was the solution. 00:13:43.000 --> 00:13:47.000 You know, that's trying to be the Jesus character 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:50.000 rather than trying to live in the Spirit. 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:52.000 The Spirit says the solutions are there 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:54.000 when you come together. 00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:57.000 The solutions are there when you share what you have. 00:13:57.000 --> 00:14:03.000 It is the most difficult thing to teach singers 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:08.000 is that most singers' voices are getting shaky 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:09.000 and falling apart at the end of lines 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:11.000 and they can't find enough breath, 00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:15.000 not because they're not taking in enough breath. 00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:18.000 Most singers do not get rid of enough breath 00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:21.000 before they take the next breath. 00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:24.000 They don't exhaust the breath they have. 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:26.000 They, you know... 00:14:26.000 --> 00:14:28.000 And we teach them to do that. 00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:30.000 You know, I was going to, you know, 00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:32.000 write a thesis in college, 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:34.000 just no one was interested, 00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:35.000 on, um... 00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:38.000 I came up with a lot of those that got rejected. 00:14:38.000 --> 00:14:39.000 No, but... 00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:41.000 On the fact that warm-ups, 00:14:41.000 --> 00:14:42.000 if we don't handle them right, 00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:44.000 warm-ups teach us to sing badly 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:46.000 because, you know, we're taught to, 00:14:46.000 --> 00:14:48.000 from high school on, we go, 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:51.000 Ah, ah, ah. 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:54.000 No one needs a whole breath for five notes. 00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:55.000 No one. 00:14:55.000 --> 00:14:58.000 And so, it's what we call stacking breath, 00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:01.000 and soon, about 90% of their lungs 00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:03.000 is full of air that's been in there for three minutes 00:15:03.000 --> 00:15:05.000 with no oxygen, 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:08.000 and they just keep filling up the top 10% 00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:10.000 instead of getting rid of what they have 00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:14.000 so they can take in something new. 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:16.000 That's that model of sharing. 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:19.000 We give up what we have 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:22.000 knowing we won't be the solution, 00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:24.000 but being part of the solution 00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:26.000 is living in the Spirit.

Father Pat’s message centers on redefining our understanding of miracles, discipleship, and community in light of the Gospel story of the multiplication of loaves and fishes. He challenges the traditional interpretation that sees Jesus performing a magical act, instead inviting us to see the deeper miracle: the transformation of hearts that led to radical sharing and communal participation. By focusing on cultural context, character insights, and the Spirit-led nature of Christian life, Father Pat emphasizes that discipleship is not about waiting for a divine fix, but about becoming active participants in God's work by offering what little we have, trusting that it is enough when shared in the Spirit. Father Pat begins by deconstructing the common, almost magical view of the miracle of the loaves and fishes, where Jesus supposedly conjures food out of thin air. Instead, he invites us to see the narrative through the lens of cultural and historical context. In first-century Jewish society, strict kosher laws prohibited sharing meals with those considered unclean or outside the religious fold. Thus, when Jesus leads this mixed crowd—comprising both the ritually pure and impure—into a shared meal, He is not just feeding them; He is breaking deeply ingrained social and religious barriers. The real miracle, then, is not supernatural multiplication but the moral and spiritual transformation that leads people to overcome fear, prejudice, and tribalism, and to share what they were already carrying in secret. Father Pat highlights the narrative’s subtle indicators that the people likely had food with them but were unwilling to share due to societal norms. The boy who offers his loaves and fish is not yet bound by religious laws—he hasn't had his bar mitzvah—and therefore is free to act outside the constraints of purity codes. His small act of generosity becomes the catalyst for communal sharing. This young boy becomes a model of discipleship: he does not solve the problem, but he begins the process of a solution. Father Pat stresses that we are often tempted to withhold our small contributions because they seem inadequate, yet the Gospel teaches that when everyone shares what little they have, it becomes more than enough. We are not called to fix the world alone, but to be part of the solution. Andrew, the disciple who brings the boy to Jesus, is also lifted up as a model of humble service. Andrew consistently appears in Scripture as someone who brings others to Jesus and then steps back, not seeking recognition or control. He trusts the Spirit to do the rest. This contrasts with Philip, the pragmatist who cannot see beyond the apparent scarcity. Andrew’s example teaches us to trust the process and to be content with playing a supporting role in God’s work, rather than needing to be the hero. Father Pat then draws a powerful connection between this story and the theology of the Holy Spirit. He explains that Jesus had to ascend so the Spirit could come—not because of spatial limitations within the Trinity, but because as long as Jesus was physically present, people would rely on Him alone for answers. The Spirit, in contrast, calls the community to discern and act together. This shift from an external savior to an indwelling Spirit democratizes divine action: the Church is now the Body of Christ, and solutions to the world’s problems must come from collaborative, Spirit-filled action. Too often, Father Pat laments, we seek another “Jesus” figure—a pope, a pastor, a leader—to tell us what to do, rather than engaging the Spirit within the community to find our way forward. He likens this spiritual dynamic to the act of singing: many singers struggle because they never fully exhale and instead keep stacking breath upon breath. This becomes a metaphor for discipleship. We must let go of what we’re holding—our resources, our control, our preconceived solutions—in order to receive what is new, to be filled with the breath of the Spirit. Sharing what we have, even if it seems insufficient, is a spiritual act of exhalation, making room for God to act through us. Ultimately, the feeding of the five thousand is not just a prefiguration of the Eucharist—it is a foreshadowing of Pentecost. Just as the miracle only occurs when the community acts together, so too the Spirit manifests fully when the Body of Christ lives in unity, humility, and generosity. Father Pat calls us to reject passive admiration of God’s power in favor of active participation in God's mission. It’s not about waiting for divine intervention, but about embodying the Spirit through acts of self-giving, trust, and communal solidarity.
