Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples, Hear the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy, but he has no roots, and therefore it lasts only a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is one who hears the word, but then worldly anxieties and the lure of riches choke the word, and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed hears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. The Gospel of the Lord. Today's gospel has, um, it kind of always has that flaw in it that happens when you try to take a metaphor apart, sometimes to its painful end, and you try to make it, make a little too much sense. And so, you know, there's this probably earlier parable about, you know, sometimes seed falls on good land and sometimes it doesn't. Later on as they try to explain what each one of those might mean, it's, you know, it's a great literary technique. It sort of, to me, looks like the prototype for eager doctoral students down the road. You know, how can I pull apart each little thing and make this one apply to this part of life? But what happens is it falls apart right when you need it. And when it gets to, you know, so what is the seed in the good soil? And the answer is, oh, well, that's the one that works. And so basically it says, you know, you'll know the seed is planted in good soil, you know, only at the autopsy. We can go back then and say, must have worked. Must have been good soil. But it doesn't give us a sense what that means. The whole parable has to be put in a context of giving us a larger message, which is we kind of like to think we go out and we, you know, we evangelize. We love that word nowadays. Meaning we spew out a story or a doctrine or a teaching or something that makes sense to us from my culture, my upbringing, my family. It makes sense to us, and therefore I go out and I've offered it, and anyone who doesn't respond is going to hell. When, as though the words that were given through a church doctrine or a document or a piece of scripture have a magic force to them that will compel anyone from any culture, from any faith. It simply doesn't work that way. And so, you know, the first step of evangelization, literally, if you want to go back to beating this poor agricultural metaphor to death, you know, the first job of the farmer is to know and prepare the soil. We tend to think that the first job of evangelization is planting seeds. Go out and plant seeds. I go out and, you know, we drop our amazing little pearls of wisdom everywhere, and that sort of becomes what the model of church for many people is. I say a few things, and if people don't come in the door, well, then it's their own problem. But we don't really take the time to go out and examine where people are at and where their lives have brought them, and, you know, you can't look at someone who spent their life physically or sexually abused by their father and say, I'm sorry, but the image of father is something you're just going to have to live with with God because that's our seed. It won't work in that soil. There are some people who will never be able to mutter the words our father who art in heaven without a visceral reaction, and we sometimes say, sorry, well, that's the formula. We're so committed to the pieces we have that we don't take the time to examine where people are at, what image of God is possible for them in the way they've been brought up, in the way, you know, not that our life is perfect, but, you know, sometimes we meet people whose damage is different than our own. And so, you know, we always have to go through life thinking, where are people coming from? Each culture has its own challenge. Our culture tends to rewrite the old class struggle. We like to rewrite it and pretend that we are a divided country, you know, between those on the left and those on the right because we don't like to admit that we're really divided between those on the top and those on the bottom economically. That's always the real division. We rewrite it into something that will sound nicer because it doesn't sound quite so harsh to be throwing punches across the aisle. But when you're punching those who are already down, well, that would just sound too mean, so we'll rewrite it. But it's usually the haves against the have-nots. And unfortunately, religion has, for the most part, been in the hands of the haves. It's what's driving this Pope up a tree. You know, theology is written very seldom by people who are informed by poverty, really informed by it. And so we look to this and we have to understand that, you know, where we fall apart in evangelization, wouldn't it be nice if it said, well, now, the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and because, and then gave us a whole bunch of information as to why it succeeded. We don't know why it succeeded. It just says the one that falls on good soil, oh, that's the one that worked. But no help. But you start to go, well, first thing you have to do is go back and say, okay, what is our soil? And it is an interesting analogy. I always think most of us, if you choose to be self-aware for, you know, even the first half hour of the day, you'll learn your own soil at least very quickly. You know, if you pull out of the driveway and you're already frustrated with the way traffic's going to be, that's your soil. You are ready for the seeds of frustration and not terribly ready for anything else. You know, yesterday, I had one of my rare moments, don't think this is who I am, but I was going to Arvada for a priest's dinner and when I got on the highway, it's just, this happens, oh, once every 10 years or so. I get on the highway and it is a parking lot and I can see it kind of going up the slope and nothing but cars and strangely, for just a moment, rather than seeing the five million obstacles that God had placed in my way, I just thought, man, we're all in this together, aren't we? It was a very different, I wish that were my approach more often, to go, gosh, we're all in this together.
