Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples, if you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him because he remains with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you. In a little while, the world will no longer see me. But you will see me because I live in you, and you will live. On that day, you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. So I'm assuming that pretty much clears it up for everyone. You know, John's Gospel, we're finally at kind of the moment in the Easter season where we get the final arrival after several weeks, especially in the daily masses, of I and the Father are one, and the Father's in me, and the Father and I are in you, and you're in me, and we're all in this. And it goes on and on in this very Greek philosophical style. And it arrives at a few conclusions, though some of them are very vague, and they don't give us quite the satisfaction, I think, that someone who wants a more fundamentalistic approach to Scripture would enjoy. And that is, you know, how do you know the Spirit is in you? How do you know that your faith is real? Well, you'll know because the Spirit's in you. And how will you know? Because it will be in you. And when my neighbor and I both pray and come to different conclusions, which one of us has the Spirit? Well, the one of you that has the truth. And which one is that? The one with the Spirit. It doesn't give us an easy answer to that. And you can quickly go to what tries to pull it out a little, and it says, well, whoever keeps my commandments. And then you immediately get into 28 different lists of what the commandments are, and which ones count and which ones don't. And at the time this is written, there's no sense of what the canon of Scripture will look like, so you can't say, well, you go to the Bible. No one had included which letters of Paul, which version of the Old Testament. And so we go back through, and you can look in the Bible, and the Bible says, thou shalt not kill or eat shrimp. So which list of my commandments? And then if you go back to the words of Jesus and get the commands that come out of the words of Jesus, it looks very simple, but we have very little interest in it. Because once you get back to the commands of Jesus, it's going to be feed the poor, visit the lonely, free the imprisoned, and we're like, well, yes, but let's get back to whether or not we should eat meat on Friday. The actual commandments of Jesus, every Christian church I know agrees on, does varying amounts of carrying it out, and stays divided on issues that have nothing to do with Jesus. Most of the Christian churches that are divided, us included, we're all divided from one another based on one thing, and that is, who gets to tell who what to do? Who has the spirit? You know, sometimes I picture us like a bunch of adolescents around a stadium yelling, we've got spirit, how about you? And everyone arguing over something that can never be settled because it will always be a point of faith. And so, you know, our faith can either tear us apart or bring us together. Kevin Burke used to love to say that there are two kinds of priests. There are those that only have one homily, and then there are those who have no homily. And I know that my theme that comes up again and again and again is community, and I think a lot of people believe that that's my ecclesiology. Now, ecclesiology means study of the church, that that's my vision, that comes out of my fundamental belief of what church should be, but it's not. It's my theology. It's my fundamental belief of who God is. See, we believe in a trinity. Our God is community, not individual. Our God is three. And even the trinity, when it was first posited for anyone, the trinity was not ever thought to be the whole picture. You can't get to the whole picture. But we kind of chose this. We knew at least that there were three sort of manifestations, and we tend to, when we talk about God, we either get very concerned with God the creator, God the Father, God the parent, God that first person of the trinity, or we're very much into Jesus, or in a few weeks at Pentecost, very much into the Spirit. And we like to talk about these individuals and from them put together a piece of God. But we don't talk about this oneness very much of the three, something that underlies each of the three persons that is a community, that our fundamental vision of God is a community. And so the reason I believe and I preach so much on community is because I believe we're created in the image of God. You know, it was posited originally in Africa and then got usurped here in America for all sorts of things, but you know the fundamental phrase that everyone would talk about, it takes a village, and they're talking about raising children. I would expand that. It takes a village to be human. You cannot be human, totally human, in total isolation. You do not develop as a full human in isolation. Who we are is communal. We are created in the image of a God that is communal, that is community. And I'm not sure we ever explore enough that image of oneness. You know, we get an interesting vision of it here in the first reading because Philip has gone down, and Philip is one of the 12 apostles. Now, in our Catholic Church, we would say that the bishops are the successors to the apostles, and there's certain things in the church that belong by right to the bishops. They're kind of that ultimate authority. And Philip has clearly evangelized this crowd, and they're all coming together, and everything's going well, and miracles are being worked. But before the Spirit comes down, it says Peter and John come down to pray with them all so that the Spirit can come down. Now, if we take that seriously, then we have to go, which of the bishops can confirm and which of them can't? Gosh, I mean, I hope ours is a Peter and a John and not a Philip. Clearly, Philip couldn't get the job done. That's not what it's about. It's not about, why did the other apostles have to come for that to happen? And it was because in that early church, there is a sense that it is not a healthy thing for one person to go off and start a branch of the church on their own. It's not that three of them would be better. It's the oneness of them that needed to be represented. The oneness of many. And as mystical as that sounds, and as hard as it is to get our head around, that is a mystery that we're called to contemplate, is the oneness of a community. You know, here at MPB, there are masses. This is usually one of them, but as summer hits, it gets earlier and earlier. Nine o'clock was the madhouse, and now 1045 has parking. Who would have guessed? You know, but as it gets warmer, people go to earlier masses. But, you know, it's interesting how people find themselves like at Christmas Eve when this place, when we're, you know, packed in. And many people are like, oh, look at how many there are. But we don't always experience how one we are. And oneness doesn't mean we all think alike. As a matter of fact, I would suggest that the difference between a cult and a religion is the room for dissent. A cult has no room for dissent. A religion has to. Otherwise, it's a cult. And so, you know, it's not that oneness means we all agree, we all think alike. It's that we know, as we've heard from many philosophers and social, you know, writers, that if we diminish anyone, we've diminished all. And that just doesn't go for our church community. That goes for the human family. Diminish anyone, and we diminish us all a little. We make that diminishment a little more acceptable every time we allow it, every time we partake in it, every time it becomes an easier part of our life. It's very hard for us to focus on the oneness of humanity. It's much easier to focus on the many. You can focus on the many, and that way, you know, if you're at war, the loss of one of our lives is more tragic than the loss of one of theirs. That's many thinking. You know, the tragedies that happen around the world are awful, but, oh, when it happens here in Aurora, when it happens here at Columbine, that's more tragic. No, it's more personal. That's expected. It's more personal to us. But it can't be more tragic unless we think, well, you know, the value of a human life is based on two things. One, it's created in the image of God, and secondly, the amount of that value will be on how close they are to me. But we do live out of that. You know, a life that's close to us just seems to be worth more. And that's not the one thinking. That's the thinking that says, well, we're many, we're many, we're many, we're many, and all of these readings are trying to say, you've got to be a body of Christ. You should stop worrying about, well, which one of us has the Spirit? Diminish one of us, you diminish all of us. So, how connected are you to the Spirit? How many people do you dialogue with in your faith? How many times are you willing to experience not the Spirit that's in my heart, but the Spirit that's between our hearts? That space in between the human heart, that's where we experience this Trinity vision of God. That's where we're going to experience what's more fundamental. It's kind of interesting, it's also a very engendered image. You know, people always talk about gender and God a lot, and all of our traditional language talks about the maleness of God, God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit. In Latin, now they'll say, oh, well, it's not feminine, it's an irregular masculine. Irregular enough, it becomes feminine, trust me. It's, you know, it's, it's, but that the wording in Latin and in all of the modern languages that came out of Latin, whether, you know, whether it's the Romani or the Italian, whether it's Spanish, whether it's French. For example, in Italian, you do have, it's very masculine, you have il padre, and you have il figlio, and you have lo spirito, those are all masculine. But you always have la trinità. Trinity is always feminine. What is that, what is that more fundamental nature that unifies? Not how do we see ourselves as individuals, not, because we experience the threeness of the Trinity very easily in our life. We experience how we interact and whether we support one another and agree or whether we don't. But a fundamental oneness. It's been my favorite image in the last 20 years. It came up in his, you know, a writer started writing about it a lot. And that is the image that they came to realize, I think it was back in the 80s, maybe the 70s, that they came to realize that the largest single living organism on Earth was a grove of aspen trees until you're right. And it wasn't until they were able to, through some of the sonic type equipment, explore the root system that they realized that this huge grove was one. It was not a bunch of different trees. It was one organism. Now, you and I can only see from the surface up, so for us, we will always see it as many. But the fundamental reality is it's one. We have to come to that vision for humanity. You and I can only see the many. We have to believe in the oneness. Diminish even one of us. You diminish all of us. That's the vision of Jesus that we are called to take into every moment of our life. Why should we help the poor? Two reasons. Social justice is a great one. But more importantly, diminish one of us. You diminish all of us. Allow one of us to suffer needlessly. Diminish all of us. That's our fundamental theology. That's what Trinity means, is that you and I, one day, will experience the kingdom of God because we'll realize that we should finally stop seeing the many and learn to see that we are one.", it takes a village, and they're talking about raising children.

I would expand that.

Who we are is communal.

we would say that the bishops are the successors to the apostles,

and there's certain things in the church that belong by right to the bishops.

They're kind of that ultimate authority.

And Philip has clearly evangelized this crowd,

and they're all coming together, and everything's going well,

It's not about, why did the other apostles have to come for that to happen?
