Glory to you, O Lord. A leper came to Jesus, and kneeling down, begged him and said, if you wish, you can make me clean. Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, I do will it be made clean. The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Then warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. He said to him, see that you tell no one anything, but go show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed. That will be proof for them. The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere. The Gospel of the Lord. Many of our scripture stories are buried under years of cultural dust. And I don't mean just getting back to what was going on in that culture. I just mean that most of us hear the beginning of a story, and if it's one we recognize out of scripture, we get an immediate picture in our head of what the story's about, and we don't hear the words anymore. It's this sort of religious dust that lays over things. It happens outside of religion, too. I was running across one with a group I was talking with this week, where we were talking about the poem. And you can run it in your head quickly. I know many of you, the nursery rhyme, Humpty Dumpty. When you run it in your head, it probably doesn't occur to you that nowhere in that poem does it mention an egg. Probably written about a person. Humpty Dumpty was probably, in the author's mind, a guard who fell from a wall, and the army couldn't fix him. But you and I, I want to know who put the egg in our head. Because it's universal. You say Humpty Dumpty, and we all see the egg that's been patched back together. Where'd the egg come from? And so we do that with a lot of our stories. Someone years ago injects something into the story, and that's what we hear, not the story. And when someone mentioned that to me in the last few weeks, I immediately went through it. I'm like, there's no egg in there. But someone slipped an egg in. So we have, in today's reading, something that people might hear, and they might not put it together with other stories they've heard. In this story, we definitely have a little bit of a, it feels like a little bit of a rebuke, because he says, tell nobody anything. And it says, but the man went right off and began to publicize the whole matter, and now Jesus can't go into any of the towns, and now he's got to be, you know. There's a little griping towards the guy. Now, every year at Thanksgiving, we get a reading where 10 people are said, are told, don't tell anyone, and nine of them do exactly what Jesus said, and the other one comes back, given praise to God, and he's the hero of the story. So which one do we grab onto? Because it kind of sounds like, well, Jesus was in a different mood during this story, and there's a bigger problem with it, which is, many scripture scholars start to think, well, you know, Jesus isn't ready to reveal himself. There's this sort of dishonest subterfuge that they assign to Jesus, which is distasteful. He's sneaking around. He doesn't want anyone to know who he is yet. What we forget is that the Gospels will not get you back to the life of Jesus. They get you back to the faith of the early church, and more importantly, the faith of four very different communities in the early church. You know, we have adjective forms of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the Mark, and the Luke, and the Matthean, the Johannine. This Mark community, the writers of this Gospel, the community that puts this together, they interpret the last little bit here. The story, you know, someone is told, don't make a big deal out of it, and they go and they publicize the whole matter. Now, the Gospel writer here decides, and because of that, Jesus couldn't go out into any town. Another Gospel writer decides, isn't it great that someone just couldn't keep that to themselves? But more importantly, you want to go back to that question and say, but why would, because it's pretty consistent in the Gospels, why would Jesus ever say, I've healed you, but don't tell anyone? And there is a good reason that we never, because we're immediately thinking, why the subterfuge? That's not what it is. Jesus says to them, don't tell anyone I healed. Go back and jump through all the normal hoops for healing, and let them think that healed you. The reason we find in our first reading today. When someone was thought to have leprosy, they were ostracized from the community. And you know, this is the difference between someone saying, you know, if we had a plague, say, flu, and let me tell you, there are people who are coming and saying, we have to stop communion until May, because of the flu, you know. Everyone has to make these decisions for themselves, but if we were the kind of community that said, look, once you've been diagnosed with flu, and wouldn't it be nice if there was a visual sign for flu, once you've been diagnosed, you are not allowed on this campus until we get a bill of health from your doctor. And that's the way the community was protecting itself. And some magic healer comes by and says, look, I'm gonna heal you from the flu, and he heals the person. And the person shows up at the doors and says, hey, I don't have that bill of health from the doctors, but a magic person on the street healed me. We'd be like, yeah, thank you, you're not coming in. That's what the community was doing. And what Jesus is saying is, and they don't even use the word healing, the guy says, I wanna be made clean. Jesus can make us clean, but only the community heals. And the community's not ready to heal until, unfortunately, at this time, they have to see him jump through their community hoops. Sometimes we never get past that. We should, but we need to know that the reason Jesus doesn't send them in saying, I know you all saw I had leprosy this last week, but a magic guy on the street cured me. He says, no, don't even tell them about this. Go and do the cleansing that Moses prescribed and go through what, all of that, and go back and be reconciled and healed in your community. We are a community of people. It really is one of the fundamental differences in history, until recent, but really, in history, it's the fundamental difference between classic Catholicism and classic Protestantism, is Protestantism started to take that approach of my personal relationship with Jesus Christ, my personal relationship with God, I'm gonna build my path. Catholicism was, you're Catholic not because you have met the Pope. You're Catholic because you belong to a community, the community belongs to the church. Most of us wanna say, well, I'm Catholic. Really, I'm a member of a community and the community is Catholic. It's a very different image. We are saved in community. And that, until very recently, that has always been the approach. Right now, it's still the approach worldwide. Here in America, we've got a lot of these sort of college-age youth programs in the church that are trying to feel, because they grew up in America, they're thinking, you know, maybe Catholicism will catch on if we become evangelical. No, actually, we'll just be a different church. And so, we're taking that approach in some sectors. But the truth is, we join people to community and the community belongs to the larger community and the community is what is saved. And so, Jesus isn't about to say to this guy, yeah, I'll make you clean. Of course, once I do that, you'll never be able to get back into the community because they'll never believe in that healing. So, he actually says to them, and for now, go to the doctor, get checked out, take the medicine that you won't even need now, and get your bill of health and go back. Because the last thing he wants to do is physically heal someone and leave them outside the community. Every healing story of Jesus has this same theme going on. It's always, they're wandering among the tombs, which were outside the city of living people. They kept the city of the dead and the city of the living very separate in those cultures. So, someone wandering around the tombs is on the outskirts of society. You know, when he raises a little girl from the dead, he returns her to a parent, always. There's always this moment at the end of the story where healing is not an individual thing. It's a nice thing, but real healing happens when we leave our isolation that the physical problems might have caused, but we leave our isolation and come back into community. That's the deeper healing. And so, Jesus isn't trying to hide who he is. Jesus is trying to make the healing complete and work within the culture he's in. And so, especially as we approach Lent, it's such an interesting spiritual exercise to understand the healing that's been given to us and the healing we pray to God for. People pray to God all the time for all sorts of cures. But as I've said on several occasions, we actually have the cure to loneliness, we just don't care enough to administer the medicine. We have the cure to hunger. We don't always care enough to get out in the world and administer the medicine. We actually have the cure to war. We just don't wanna give up other things that are more important to us. We have the cures of so many things and we don't use them. And I always wonder whose prayers are more fervent, our prayer to God for the healings we don't have or God's prayer to us to use the ones we do. Because maybe the day we use the ones we have, God will ready us for the next set of cures. But most of us aren't ready to use the ones we have. So as Lent approaches this coming week, you know I'm always a big fan, I always tell people I'm a much bigger fan of taking something on rather than giving something up because most of the things we give up, we take back up at Easter. Gave up chocolate several years in a row, I still eat it though. And I've got two or three days left. If it's just a six week odd practice that won't continue rather than what would happen and I tell you this now instead of next week because it takes a little preparation. You know, got six weeks during Lent. What if you celebrated each Sunday of Lent by reconnecting to someone you've let fall away? Reconnecting to someone who's become isolated. Maybe they become isolated because they're hard to be around. I always comfort myself in the world when I'm trying to be around people who are really, really, the theological term is irritating. I always comfort myself knowing that I am too. You know, who are the people we've allowed to drift away just because it's easier? A better spent Lent is at least once a week reconnecting to someone. And it may be simple and it takes two and they may decide it doesn't go anywhere but you're open to bringing people back into your lives. That's the healing. That's the miracle. The rest is wondrous but it's just medicine.
