When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leapt in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, said in a loud voice, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? From the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled. And Mary said, My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. My spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on his lowly servants. From this day all generations will call me blessed. The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm and has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, for he has remembered the promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever. Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home. The Gospel of the Lord. It has been, for me, watching TV a very rough 24 hours. Today we have this Feast of the Assumption, and yet the church once more has this elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. And, you know, I will address it more fully this weekend, but I think it's painful to people to come into church and have it ignored. It has to be addressed. It's in some ways easier today because we don't have quite the wealth of young people here, and I go back and forth between thinking, well, what do you say without making it too vague? What do you say before parents are running from the room with their children because it's inappropriate? And the truth is we're just going to have to learn to use the word sexual abuse from the pulpit. More importantly, we're going to have to learn that the problem is not sexual, the problem is abuse. Because I think the thing no one wants to admit yet is that this or something else will never stop until abuse becomes unpalatable. And abuse can be a priest yelling at someone in a sacristy. Abuse can be a misappropriation of funds. Abuse can be, well, you never question Father because He goes off the rail. Until we knock those of us in collar, until we knock the clergy off our pedestals, even if we all prayed on the Feast of the Annunciation, the Assumption today, and everyone was made magically pure in body, we would find another way to be abusive. We cannot have unquestioned power. Father says so cannot be good enough for a community of adults. We can still call priests Father unless by doing so you feel like children. That's where we have to get to, is that we have to be a people who understand. I listened to, I think it was the prosecutor, the state's attorney, and I thought, he just can't let go of it. He's been beaten down, obviously, at an early age when he said, you know, we found out that all these priests had done this and the men of God in charge of them were looking the other way. And I thought, he still calls them men of God. Can't get away from it, can you? You know, rather than, you know, a bunch of schmoes trying like the rest of us, and the difference is the rest of us have boundaries, and we've magically taken the boundaries off a whole group of people and said whatever they say goes. I remember at my last parish, we'd have a liturgy team, about, it was a small parish, but about six of the most talented women I'd ever met who would come in and make the place ready for Lent, make the place ready for Easter. And they'd always come over to the office and grab me and say, can you come over and see if it's right? Now, I have, I have the decorating sense of a biker. And they'd call me over and they'd say, is it good, is it good? And I finally had to say to them, look, few things, obviously, no hallelujahs during Lent, here are the colors, this, that, and the other. Beyond that, you guys have a better eye than I do. And if you come up with something that the community loves for Lent and I hate it, it's still right. Well, does Father like it? What about Father? You know, Father's had enough training that he should be able to find something spiritual in anything. Let's figure out what the parish needs. Rather than, oh no, Father's had the training so that narrower, narrower, narrower vision should control everyone. We can't continue to put people on pedestals. There was a man a few months back who was writing a book about these abuses. And he wanted me to read the book and get behind him and start a movement and yadda yadda. And I thought, he doesn't understand. He doesn't understand. I've got this important message, but it doesn't mean anything until I get a priest behind it. He's undoing his own movement. You know, you'll notice in Hollywood, when the Me Too movement happened, they didn't first go to see if they could get a couple of powerful producers to back them. That wasn't their first move. What they started to realize was, that movement will do no good until income equality is fixed. If you're not going to fix the equality issue, some people will always end up hurt. And in the church, we're going to have to knock down some podiums. Not look at every single person with more suspicion than the average person, just not look at them with any less. And start to become a group of adults that, you know, I think right now, safe environment, which is, it's not a bad training, but it wants to make sure that one specific kind of abuse can't happen anymore without taking away the clergy's right to abuse people in other ways. It's a bad plan. What we have to do is say, you know, on this feast of Mary, that life we look at lived perfectly, Mary's virginity is not what made her a great person. It was her ability to give her life for others. And that's something we all have. And so I think, you know, we have to start focusing on the word abuse. The word sexual made everyone so uncomfortable, you know, I still can't believe when they say, well, you know, they got the police to look the other way, and they got the parents to look the other way, and I'm mad at the priests, and I'm mad at the police, and I'm mad at the parents, and I'm mad at the psychologists. You know, why? Well, you know, well, the priest told us to. All I can hear is my grandmother from heaven saying, if they told you to jump off a cliff, but I think in church, when clergy says jump off a cliff, we think, if I'm a person of real faith, the crazier it is, the more faith I'll have to do it. That's a dangerous, dangerous dynamic. And as odd as it is, what I'm asking is that you help us as clergy by forcing us off the pedestals. It's not disloyal. As a matter of fact, where it may feel disloyal to a person here, a clergy member there, it might, it's real loyalty to the image of the church. You know, we have learned over the last couple decades that blindly following who's ever in charge at the moment is not patriotism.
