Glory to you, O Lord. When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown His great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her. When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said in reply, No, he will be called John. But they answered her, There is no one among your relatives who has this name. So they made signs asking the father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet and wrote, John is to be his name. And all were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke, Blessing God. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. It only happens roughly once every seven years that June 24th falls on a Sunday, and so it always kind of catches me off guard that the nativity of John the Baptist is so important to feast in the church that it supplants Sunday. Very, very few holidays do that. And, you know, when you think of the Christmas and Easter and Pentecost and big things like that, it just never, you know, you just don't think of the birth of John the Baptist being up there with those others. He is very much a side character. He doesn't get nearly the time in the Gospels that Peter gets or, you know. But, you know, there is this sort of this whole idea that is wrapped up in John the Baptist, which is about preparing the way of the Lord and seeing Jesus before anyone else could figure out who Jesus was. And so there is this tuned-in-to-God sort of aspect to John the Baptist. Now, because of the Scripture, just because of the story of the visitation and the way it lays out in the verses, we assume that John was roughly, and we're talking roughly, six months older than Jesus. So, of course, they go to the calendar. They say, Jesus was born on the 24th. John must have been born on the 24th. Um... Anyone who has had children knows that the nine-month rule is a husband's tale. Sorry, not a wife's tale, but, you know. Um, it's not nine months. Never has been. It's kind of all over the place. Someone came to me last night and said, well, I was told in the Bible, the reason they say that is because, you know, someone who needed the Bible to be absolutely literal. Well, they said, because they're talking about lunar months. And I said, lunar months are shorter. We're getting even further away from nine months. But, you know, it's this idea. And, you know, my mother was in a more... When she was having children, a little harsher judgmental time. They were married on August 27th, and my brother was due on May 27th, nine months to the day. Honeymoon baby. And he came three days early, and she was mortified. Because in that day and age, people would count. You know, I mean, it's just... It's amazing how people could take the birth of a child and say, there's got to be a way to turn this into a negative. What is that in our human nature that can kind of go after anything to say, well, they could have done better job at that. You know, what does that give us? What do we get out of that? John's... The first moment we hear of John is that he leaps in his mother's womb for joy. Probably not a great joy for his mother, but, you know, leaps in the womb. But there's already this sense that his approach to God is something of great joy. I think one of the saddest things that you encounter as a priest, in clergy, people who work in ministry, are people whose awareness of God has made them fearful, has made them concerned. The whole world's going to hell. What are we going to do? Their experience of God is worrisome. That their experience, you know, because literally what they're saying is, you know, Jesus came and died to save the whole world, but I don't think it worked. Jesus didn't work. Well, don't worry, because if Jesus didn't work, there isn't anything you can do. If Jesus didn't work. And so, instead of approaching their religion as this great victory won, and this great piece of joy that we share with one another, we get more and more somber. And I think as a culture, beyond our faith, we are simply, kind of interestingly, a somber culture. We're an affluent culture, and the more affluent we get, the less happy we get. If you don't believe me, next time you're at an intersection, look over at the faces of people in their cars. You know. If they're just bored to death, they're one of the happier people at the intersection. It goes from there to irritated, to why isn't this light changed? And I've thought, you know, a great money maker for the city, you know, there's so much controversy over these photo radar tickets, and yes, I've gotten one. Sometimes the machine isn't working correctly, I'm sure. So, forget the penalty. They could hold that picture of you hostage. I mean, I look at my face and I'm like, what was I doing at that moment? You know, had like bad sushi just kicked in? I looked horrible. And I'm thinking to myself, is that the expression on my face most of the time? Is this sort of, I'm driving? Where is our joy in life? And yes, you know, it's sort of an old cliche thing about, you know, keep a smile on your face. It does something. It does something to at least evaluate what is the position my face relaxes into? Not when I'm in crisis. Not when I'm in the middle of a great celebration. But where is normal? Because I think that we ignore the greatest miracle, you know, the greatest miracle of life is life. You know, I got up this morning, and I will admit the alarm went off a little earlier than I would have liked. But what I didn't think about when that alarm went off and woke me was the reason it woke me is because I'm still alive. You know, everyone here who has a bad day, you're having a day. We don't recognize the constant life within us. Father John Philenbach in Rome used to teach that the definition of joy, everyone would say, well, we know what the word means, but no one could really define it. The definition of joy was your awareness of being fully alive. The awareness of being fully alive in that moment. And most of us who have had sickness, suffering, the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, depression, whatever it is, know that that is a feeling of diminishment. We don't quite feel connected to the world. We don't feel quite connected. We are shut down. We are not feeling we are fully alive. And in the midst of pain, that is a tough thing to get to, especially if we don't ever nurture it in the normal moments. You know, I talk about this all the time, but like when you're at church and you're sitting there and most of you are probably not in horrible pain at the moment. It's not terribly warm or terribly cool. We're somewhat comfortable. The speaker's going on a little long, but other than that, it's, you know, it is a normal moment. And we don't see that as a good moment. But if something comes up, we will recognize the bad moment. Now, some of that I do believe is just biological human. It's very hard, if I have broken this hand, it's going to be very hard to block that out and notice that this hand feels just fine. That is hard to get to. But in a moment where both hands are working, where everything is going well, do we even notice that? Or are we already thinking about something we know is going to go wrong tomorrow? Are we still playing something over in our head that went wrong yesterday? You know, the great miracle that we live, that same professor, John Feulenbach, used to always say, you'll know when you are separated from God because you won't exist. God is in you, keeping you alive at every moment. In a feast like today, the Nativity of John the Baptist, also Christmas, the Nativity, any of these, I think it's a mistake for us. Too many people look at a baby and say, don't you see the miracle of life? You know, the miracle of a baby being alive is exactly the same miracle as that of a 12-year-old being alive. Not always as pleasant, but, or the exact, you know, of someone who is 80 being alive. You know, we see it at the moment of birth and we think, that is the miracle of birth, but it's not the miracle of life. The miracle of life happens right now. You, God is every bit as active in creating you at this moment as at the beginning of your life. And we miss that miracle. It's, we live, we are living miracles and we run around looking for miracles. And we just, we miss that. We miss that there should be sort of a constant amazement. My father, who was much more a man of science than faith, he was a man of deep faith, but his vocabulary and his approach to the world was very scientific. He was an engineer and he said that that for him, that was his proof of God. Now, as someone in religious realms, I don't want a proof of God. I think God is a faith thing, but he wanted proofs. You know, he's a science man. And he said his proof of God was life. He said because in all of his study of physics, entropy and all this stuff and stuff breaking down, there is nothing in all the law of physics that can account for one cell becomes two, becomes four. What's not complicated becomes more complicated. In his mind, the double helix of DNA and of life stood against every law of physics. In his mind, physics explains everything but life. We don't get life yet. We can't figure it out. And that to him says there is something beyond this physics stuff. And so it can be a constant joy or it can be a constant worry. But it is a choice. I think it is a choice to try to be aware of the goodness of God at every moment, to be aware how much in our life goes right. I know we are aware when it goes wrong. I know how aware we are. Most of us, that's our prayer life. Well, I'm going to take something to God in prayer. Now, when someone says, I'm going to take something to God in prayer, what they mean is I have a problem and I want God to fix it. We go to God with our problems. We go to God with our concerns. And that is a valid part of our prayer life. But to go and sit for a while and think, can I experience the miracle of being alive? Do we take even a moment to experience that we're alive? And what does that mean? And wonder at it. You know, the psalmist said, you know, who are we that God would care for us and bring us into life? And I think we need to sit with that wonder, not just when something amazing like the birth of a baby happens, but every moment of that baby's life. You know, until they are an ancient baby. Every moment that we go, this is just as miraculous. This is just as amazing. And so we ask God to make us a people of wonder, a people of joy, a people that have all of that goodness and grace that we have in a few moments and realize God isn't with us more in one moment than another. We are aware of it differently, but God is with us every moment. It is, it's always what I call the non-capitalistic version of God. Not that, you know, capitalism is an economic system. Go ask an economist, I'm not gonna get into that. But as a spiritual system, it's always flawed because it wants to tell you that something's value has to do with how rare it is. You know, it's so rare and it's, it's people need it and they can't get it and that makes it more and more and more and more valuable. For us as Christians, the most common thing in the world is the grace of God and everyone has all that they need and it's still the most valuable. It kind of stands against all that for us. And so we ask God to make us aware of this constant gift of grace, this constant gift of life, so that we can become a people who show, you know, great joy to the world. Now, I was stopped after last night's sermon because a friend came up and she said, you know, it was a nice homily, but you've clearly never been a woman. And I said, what? You know, we are told from a very young age to keep a smile on. If you would just smile, you'd be so pretty. So I don't smile. I was like, I think you were more manipulated by that than if you'd smiled. So we talked about it for a while and I said, well, you know, I'm not saying you should smile for the rest of the world. You should smile to make yourself feel good. Well, it doesn't make me feel good. And it took us about 10 minutes to get through it and then it hit me. I said, that's when you realized I hadn't been a woman? We've known each other a while. And I don't want to sell her out, but she did smile. You know, I think we need to be a people of joy, a people who look to things and say, there are things going right. And we're not Pollyanna. We recognize there are things going wrong. But I think if our awareness was constant, we'd realize which outweighed which. That God's grace is constant. And just because we don't keep ourselves aware of it does not mean it's there. And it's there so much more often than the tragedy. And so we ask God to make us a people that respond well to tragedy out of the vision that we know how blessed we are in every moment that our life is in fact a life.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek":
