That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus' disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. He asked them, what are you discussing as you walk along? They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days? And he replied to them, what sort of things? They said to him, the things that happened to Jesus, the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. How our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel. And besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body. They came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see. And he said to them, oh, how foolish you are. How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke. Was it not necessary that Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory? Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures. As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over. So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scripture to us? So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem, where they found gathered together the 11 and those who were with them, who were saying the Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon. Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The author of the fourth gospel, who is called John, we are not quite sure who he was or whether it was even a single person, but you know, it comes out of, we get a word from John, Johannine. It comes from this Johannine community, this Johannine tradition. And it's a gospel written to the Greeks. And so today, this entire gospel is sort of a line And so today, this entire gospel is sort of a launching into a teaching a different culture about the importance of that Semitic meal ritual. You know, for us as the church, we talk about it very much as the breaking of the bread and the Eucharist. And even by the time of John, I'm not sure the Eucharist with the theology we have in place was a reality back then. They were still reenacting the meal and, you know, Trinity and all of these other things start to grow out of the community at a different pace. So while many people nowadays will tell you, this is all about that moment of the breaking of the bread, that's definitely one climax of the story. But we miss, very often, the journey that gets them there. Because many people have taken this to say, you know, when people come, they'll, you know, people who have never been to a church, it doesn't matter what is said. It doesn't matter about the community. It doesn't matter about the prayers. It doesn't matter about what they're doing in the world. They'll recognize him in that ritual. And then, so what do we do when people come and go, eh? He held up something that, you know, for someone who's not Christian, they'd probably say, you know, show me a miracle. Whatever that is, turn it into bread. Because it doesn't even look like that. You know, it's, I, if you serve that at dinner, people would not be pleased. If it were bread, you know, I'm always, I always think, well, we call it bread, but I wouldn't leave bread in that tabernacle for weeks on end and serve it. You know, I mean, I might, it would depend on the dinner. But, you know, you've got this sense of what would you do? So people come and they think, well, what if the ritual doesn't hit them? Many of you know, I have a branch of my family that is in the Mormon church, and, which means, I didn't get through my teenage years without lots of visits from elders. And I think I succeeded in irritating most of them. But, you know, the pitch of that evangelical thrust is usually the same, which is, you know, we would like you to read the Book of Mormon. And, you know, when you read this, trust me, the Spirit will talk to you. You'll be converted. And so I read it, and I said, so what if, what if it didn't hit me? I read it, I didn't get, I didn't get my big runner's high moment. And the answer, well, you know, I think we can help you pray for you. In other words, if this hits you, it hits you, and see, our theology is proven. If it doesn't, we'll figure out what's wrong with you until it does. And that's often what we do at the Eucharist. You'll watch us receive communion, and you'll see Jesus. And I'm not sure we really even believe that experientially. I don't think we've seen it. I don't think we've talked about Catholicism to people. And then years later, they finally saw the ritual and went, that's it. We're taught about the ritual, and that's really what this is about. It's not about a magic moment that will, you know, the Holy Spirit, William Barclay once said, the Holy Spirit is not a gate crasher that will bust into your heart and control you whether you like it or not. You know, it's, so how do we bring people to the Eucharist? And the story has more to do with the windup. Here we have these two people on the road who have just gone through, you know, probably the most emotional rollercoaster of their life. You know, they've been through these great times with Jesus and the Last Supper and, you know, then the horrible Good Friday, and then, you know, they're hearing whispers of resurrection and they're all over the place. And they run into someone who seems to be unaware of anything going on. So they fill him in and say, here's what's happened this week. Here's what we've experienced. And he says, eh, I think you've got it all wrong. And he starts really kind of taking them to task. Oh, you know, I mean, I think when I've just met someone on the road, oh, how slow and foolish you are. It's not a great opening to dialogue. The story has Jesus, you know, the way the story's written, and that's why you have to understand this culture, when we hear it in modern terms, we go, diplomatic skill's not so good in this story. But they listen to him. They listen to the content. It's clear he's not thinking like they are. And at the end of the journey, he's going on and they're going in for the night. And that, I think, is the graced moment. Here we have travelers who, even in the midst of everything they've gone through, encounter someone who clearly challenges them on all of their beliefs. And their response is, well, come have dinner with us. Let's continue this. They're open to the experience of Jesus at that moment. He didn't pull up the bread and magically hit them with the scales falling from their eyes, and they can now see the truth, because the miracle of the meal, but the miracle of the openness. You can imagine. I mean, we look at our church, we look at our country, and when someone comes at us saying, I actually think the way the other side does, we go, thank you, I've got dinner with friends tonight. You know, I can't tell you how many people have said to me, well, you know, I don't know what to do with my best friend because they're a Democrat or they're a Republican. And we just can't talk anymore. The Emmaus journey is not a journey between a bunch of people who all think alike. What gets them to the table is their ability to be open to something beyond their own way of thinking. In politics today, they talk a lot about people in their bubbles. I like to talk a lot about people in their tribal thinking. They all have their favorite tribe. Either their favorite tribe is Catholic or Republican or Democrat or Protestant, and it gets narrower and narrower. And it's, well, it's got to be, it's not just Republican. I'm an alt-right, alt-conservative Catholic. I am a super liberal social justice Methodist. And the smaller we get our tribe, because I think what's happened is both our church and our country have grown large enough that we can no longer tap into that for identity. We all want something smaller to belong to. So we'll say we're proud to be Americans, but first I edited all the Americans who disagree with me out of my mind, and I'm very proud to be what's left. And both sides do that. Both sides are not very proud of the other side of the fence right now. You know, I am proud to be one of my kind of Americans. It just doesn't have the same sort of ring, does it? I'm very proud to be my kind of Catholic. The rest of you I'm a little concerned about, but I am very proud. Because our need for identity, it just doesn't get met right now by such a large group. And we don't think alike, and we've lost the ability to say, hey, of course we don't think alike. That doesn't mean we don't support each other. Now, in small groups, this can work. Not every family, but there are. I've encountered over a dozen healthy families in 20 years. I mean, there are healthy families out there who disagree radically, and they don't stop supporting each other. They don't wish ill on one another. They just disagree. And probably it's stronger. I worry about the younger generations now that don't have that experience of sitting around table night after night after night, you know? Or they're sitting around table, but by themselves. Because, you know, there was three soccer practices, two piano lessons, and, you know. We, that idea that, you know, one of the things, I've told you both my parents were severe, severe alcoholics that really got their lives together later in life. And so the years that I was growing up, there wasn't a lot of bonding, but they were high-functioning alcoholics. And in their generation, alcoholism was kind of a social skill. So, you know, I don't harbor anger there. There's a lot of relational things that didn't happen. So there's some closeness that might have happened when I was eight or nine that didn't. But when I look at that dynamic of how high-functioning they were, and I mean, they might be passed out by seven in the evening. But in all those years, my dad never missed a day of work. And my mother, with seven children, had a meal on the table every single night. And she'd go weeks on end without repeating a recipe. Not for lack of memory, it wasn't that bad. But, you know, in the 1970s, when most of us thought dinner was something brown, something white, and something green, she was cooking Greek food and Asian food and, you know, Mexican food and Italian. She was just, oh, just loved to cook. And so we always, this group of siblings that have nothing in common but history. I mean, if I lined up the seven jobs of the seven of us, you'd go, okay, let a geneticist look at that mess and try and figure it out. We have nothing, no common interests. My older brother still just wants me to get rid of this religion stuff and go hunting with him. You can just see that, can't you? Maybe if he were in front of the gun, there's a possibility. We just see nothing eye to eye. It's that we just don't have anything in common. We get together and we all get along. And it's from those nights around table. And it's not that we were a family where anyone would say, what did you do today? It was more banter and this and that. But, you know, as we grew older, it might be trivial pursuits or uno. There was something around table that happened. And we don't agree on a lot of stuff, but we can get to the table. And that's the Emmaus journey, when we disagree. When someone says, oh, you've got it all wrong. Can we still get to the table? Because if we can't, there's no encounter, there's no chance of the encounter with Christ if we can't get to the table. Political terms, they can call it reaching across the aisle, but can we get to the table? Or is our identity, we're going to stop those people? Is the identity of everyone right now who we can stop in the world? And that's politically, that's religiously. I can't tell you the number of people who identify their Catholicism by the groups we're going to fight. We can all figure out who we'd like to be at war with. There are just so many possibilities nowadays. The choices are endless. Or we can say, how do we get to the table with the people we don't agree with on the journey? Can we listen and say, well, I don't agree, but there is some truth there. OK, that point they had. Most of us, again, no matter which side of a political or religious fence you were on, most of us had at least one or two topics that when they came up politically, we thought, oh, our candidate doesn't do real well on this. I hope they don't ask it tonight. Rather than saying, huh, maybe I should call my own candidates to correction. Our tribal identity was too strong. And I always say every year at the Feast of the Holy Family, the only family that's truly holy is the one that includes every member of humanity. How big is our tribe? Religion invites us to belong to something larger. And I think we're at a crisis because people are trying to find their identities in something smaller. It's just cleaner. It's easier. A community of three people is so much less difficult than a church of one billion. What are we willing to belong to? And how large? If I need to be always right, I'm thinking a community of one. And even we don't agree all the time. That'll scare you. If I need to agree, my tribe will be minuscule. If I can disagree on the journey and still get to the table, our tribe could be larger. With the help of God, it could be universal. We could finally see the Eucharist, but we won't get there until we can enjoy the journey with those with whom we may never agree. Agreeing and respecting are two different things. Agreement will get us all sorts of things in the world.
