According to the Lord. Jesus said to his apostles, whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward. And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple, amen I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Today we have a gospel that you have to do a little swimming upstream against the current. You always have to recognize when you're reading the words of Jesus, whether it comes out of there's collections that must have existed back then, but whether these are the words of the rabbi himself or the words of the gospel writer Matthew. And it's not that Matthew's being dishonest, it's that that's the genre. You, just like in the Greek dialogues, you put the theology of the moment on the lips of the master. And what we see are two very different portrayals of Jesus, one through all his behaviors and many of the things he says, and then we get into these moments where we probably are looking at Matthew's words. And if not, they become a little unpalatable. They're distasteful. We don't have an image of Jesus who dies on the cross that runs around to people saying, if you don't love me more than your mother and father, and if you don't love me more than your son, and you better love me a lot, and if you do things for people because they were my, it's just, it's an exhausting image. But you know that Matthew's community, the community this gospel comes out of, is going through some real trials. There are people struggling to try and figure out why they're following Jesus. And we try to sometimes come up with these reasons that will inspire people, but in the long run, they can also cause some problems. So if you're a disciple, and if you're nice to the disciples, we would like to get beyond that. Nothing disturbs me more than when I'm going down the road, and I see someone on the corner with a sign that says, you know, Christian family man needs help. And I always think it's such a condemnation of who we've become, because the person has learned over time that people will not respond to him because he's human. They will not respond to him because he's suffering, but maybe if he's one of our group, we might respond. Like, we'll respond because he's a Christian. And it's a real distasteful vision of our faith, is that, well, you know, we take care of our own. That's really what Jesus is talking about in the original, which ends up in the other gospel, about, you know, if you don't hate your mother and father, he's not asking you to hate people. He's saying, if you can't get to the point where you hate that idea that some people in the world are worth more than others. Some people matter, and some don't. And unfortunately, over the years, that's what we've done with the word family. Family are the people who matter more. And I don't care whether it's your biological family, or your family of friends, or your community, or your country, or whatever it is, we matter more. And where it sounds totally normal to say, of course my family matters more, we don't want to really say what we're saying, which is, all those other people matter less. But one of those statements means the other. You know, so who in our life matters less? And what are the boundaries of our compassion? I think there are a lot of voices nowadays that will curtail compassion. And they come off as being reasonable, and they come off as just thinking things through, but they have a history and a bit darker edge of the human spirit. I always think of people who, you know, maybe a hundred years ago, you think of where a real Puritan ethic was still in place, and someone would say, well, you know, there's someone on the street who's starving and begging for money, and someone would say, well, they'll just spend it on drink. Oh, good, now I have a moral reason to not be compassionate. It's not that I lack compassion, I just have a sense of decency. What are the ways we talk ourselves out of the compassionate response? There's all sorts of ways that we talk ourselves out of the compassionate response. And for Jesus, and when you read the Gospels as a whole, compassion is the point. This Pope over and over and over again, compassion is the point. It's not just an act of compassion, it's the motivation. I always have the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, which really are about the only ones left. When I hear someone start to say, you know, we have to go out and do these acts of charity in the world so that people will see our Christianity, they'll see our faith, that's not the point. We aren't charitable to evangelize. We have our faith to be charitable. Charity is the goal. It's not, you know, we aren't going to be a compassionate people because it's good PR. That's not compassion, that's an agenda. You know, we have to get past that hidden agenda that says, well, the real point is to inspire them to look at us and say, oh my gosh, they're wonderful, I'll join them. That's not really, the point is, because we're one of this group, we should have learned by now to respond to the compassion that we already have. People have compassion very naturally, we've learned to talk ourselves out of it. Very few people grow up seeing someone suffer and not respond, you know. And the very few people that do, we actually diagnose. That's what, you know, sociopath means. I just, no empathy. Empathy is a normal, healthy response. But we come up with political reasons and economic reasons and reasons why, you know, it's okay not to respond to those people suffering. Every once in a while, and I'm very blessed, it does not happen in this parish very often, but in my history as a priest, where people would say, now Father, do you think that so and so should be receiving communion? Because, and you know, I always think, what they're saying is, isn't there a reason that we don't have to be compassionate here? Don't we have a reason that can talk us out of our compassion? Why are we being merciful to that person? And someone has taught them that that is a holiness. You know, I stand for the truth, you know, people, religion's about a lot of things. It's about compassion, it's about mercy. It is about truth, but people who focus on, it's about truth are people who need to be able to say, and I'm right and you're wrong. I have the truth and you don't. Compassion doesn't allow me to do that. The love of God doesn't allow me to say, you know, I mean, it's really less satisfying to run through the world saying, I'm compassionate and you're not. Kind of falls apart, the very tone of voice, the lies that you're not being compassionate at all. But, you know, truth, oh, that gets us on our high horse about I'm right and you're wrong. And it's such a, it's such a blah vision of religion, rather than religion that inspires us to go out and say, you know, we reach out because God has instilled that compassion in us and the voice has given us a hundred reasons not to respond. What's the voice that talks you out of compassion? Sometimes it's the fear that if we start responding to every person in need, it will, you know, it will consume us. It's a devastating moment when Christians realize that they're following someone who tells them to give their life to others. Because, you know, we really just joined to be one of the people who were right. We didn't think it would actually demand our lives. You know, what do you want, blood? Well, that's what we took from Jesus on the cross. What are we following? We're following someone who said, yeah, you just respond to the compassion. You see someone hurting and you do what you can. And that's so simple that it would call us to immediate action. And if instead we can theologize about it, I can live in my head and it doesn't have to interrupt me Monday through Saturday. It's very tough stuff to say what happens if we start to treat the world as our family. How would that rewrite my social circle? How would really, knowing it's our responsibility to respond to the world, how would that rewrite our church? How would it rewrite our country? We come into our celebration of the Fourth of July. I've said this a couple times, but you know, I kind of wondered all year, and this is not, this is not to knock Donald Trump or Hillary or anyone else, but when you say make America great, what is great? Because as Christians, it says, well, that means you're going to be the country that's most in service of all the others. I'll bet you a lot of us don't want to be great. A lot of us would rather be prosperous, would rather be, you know, I'll be great if I can protect myself. But what does it mean to be in service to the world, to say, oh no, we don't have a family image that says the people inside this circle are more important. When one of ours is, you know, killed, that's a tragedy, and one of theirs is killed, it's a statistic. It's very hard to grasp what Jesus was getting at, that compassion is a universal response, but there's a universal ability to talk ourselves out of it. So what are the voices and the excuses that stop you? You know, when you see someone in need, and you look the other way, when someone who calls who is just the person who is so irritating, and they call all the time, and they want a little more, and, you know, what is it we use to talk ourselves out of compassion? There are times we have to say no out of compassion, not, well, they'll just spend it on drink. But you can't hand someone a drink when you know you're going to lead them into something that's going to ruin them. I get that, you know. Being compassionate doesn't mean you get to do the thing that feels good all the time. So how do we get there? How do we get to that point that says, how do I learn to see people? Well, I think we do start with family. That's why family is a good starting place. You can even start with a best friend. Who's the person in your life, let me put it negatively first, who's the person in your life that irritates you the least? You might go, I don't have one, no. You know, who is the person you always want to go to lunch with? Who is the person you always want to spend more time with? How do you respond to one more person that way? How do you use that person not as, oh, this is the person I just, this is the person I want to be with all the time, rather than, okay, so God has given me this gift so I can start to see how I'm to look at the rest of the world. This is the model, you know. We can use it all the time. I mean, we can use it on ourselves. I always think, if my best friend in the world lost their keys for the fifth time today, I wouldn't call them an idiot. But if I do it, what is wrong with me? You know, how many times do we beat ourselves up in a way that we would never do to anyone else? I sometimes think that the worst thing we could do would be to love the world the way we love ourselves. Because we're awful to ourselves. You know, what happens when we say, these are the people who, for whatever reason, we connect, we connect easily, and I always want the best for them. Great, there's your model. How many people can you pull into that? How can you get to yourself, get yourself to the point where you can't abide anyone suffering? It's a long journey. It will consume our lives. It will be something that takes every day of the week. But that's the following of Jesus. That's what he called us to. Not to become a community that we can use compassion to get people to join us. Community doesn't inspire, I mean, compassion does not inspire for other reasons. Compassion is its own ends. It's how Jesus wanted to change the world to make it a more compassionate place. And we ask God today to teach us new ways to reach out, to figure out who this year we've had the least compassion for, and how do we begin to move beyond that? Once we learn to see maybe the person who irritates us the most with compassion, we've begun to understand the journey and the call of Jesus.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.000 The Lord be with you. 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:02.480 And with your spirit. 00:00:02.480 --> 00:00:04.719 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. 00:00:04.719 --> 00:00:07.519 According to the Lord. 00:00:07.519 --> 00:00:09.199 Jesus said to his apostles, whoever 00:00:09.199 --> 00:00:12.560 loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. 00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:14.720 Whoever loves son or daughter more than me 00:00:14.720 --> 00:00:16.600 is not worthy of me. 00:00:16.600 --> 00:00:19.079 And whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me 00:00:19.079 --> 00:00:21.040 is not worthy of me. 00:00:21.040 --> 00:00:22.760 Whoever finds his life will lose it, 00:00:22.760 --> 00:00:26.799 and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 00:00:26.799 --> 00:00:28.719 Whoever receives you receives me, 00:00:28.719 --> 00:00:32.040 and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. 00:00:32.040 --> 00:00:34.279 Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet 00:00:34.279 --> 00:00:36.880 will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever 00:00:36.880 --> 00:00:39.360 receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man 00:00:39.360 --> 00:00:43.080 will receive a righteous man's reward. 00:00:43.080 --> 00:00:46.159 And whoever gives only a cup of cold water 00:00:46.159 --> 00:00:49.819 to one of these little ones to drink because the little one 00:00:49.819 --> 00:00:51.959 is a disciple, amen I say to you, 00:00:51.959 --> 00:00:55.439 he will surely not lose his reward. 00:00:55.439 --> 00:00:56.479 The Gospel of the Lord. 00:00:57.200 --> 00:00:59.159 Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:05.120 --> 00:01:07.040 Today we have a gospel that you have 00:01:07.040 --> 00:01:11.720 to do a little swimming upstream against the current. 00:01:11.720 --> 00:01:16.160 You always have to recognize when you're 00:01:16.160 --> 00:01:19.839 reading the words of Jesus, whether it comes out 00:01:19.839 --> 00:01:23.919 of there's collections that must have existed back then, 00:01:23.919 --> 00:01:29.160 but whether these are the words of the rabbi himself 00:01:29.160 --> 00:01:31.959 or the words of the gospel writer Matthew. 00:01:31.959 --> 00:01:34.000 And it's not that Matthew's being dishonest, 00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:36.160 it's that that's the genre. 00:01:36.160 --> 00:01:39.279 You, just like in the Greek dialogues, 00:01:39.279 --> 00:01:43.120 you put the theology of the moment 00:01:43.120 --> 00:01:45.360 on the lips of the master. 00:01:45.360 --> 00:01:49.839 And what we see are two very different portrayals of Jesus, 00:01:49.839 --> 00:01:52.319 one through all his behaviors and many of the things 00:01:52.319 --> 00:01:57.080 he says, and then we get into these moments where we probably 00:01:57.080 --> 00:01:59.440 are looking at Matthew's words. 00:01:59.440 --> 00:02:02.839 And if not, they become a little unpalatable. 00:02:02.839 --> 00:02:05.839 They're distasteful. 00:02:05.839 --> 00:02:07.599 We don't have an image of Jesus who 00:02:07.599 --> 00:02:09.919 dies on the cross that runs around to people saying, 00:02:09.919 --> 00:02:12.160 if you don't love me more than your mother and father, 00:02:12.160 --> 00:02:13.720 and if you don't love me more than your son, 00:02:13.720 --> 00:02:16.360 and you better love me a lot, and if you do things for people 00:02:16.360 --> 00:02:22.160 because they were my, it's just, it's an exhausting image. 00:02:22.479 --> 00:02:26.559 But you know that Matthew's community, 00:02:26.559 --> 00:02:29.039 the community this gospel comes out of, 00:02:29.039 --> 00:02:31.320 is going through some real trials. 00:02:31.320 --> 00:02:33.839 There are people struggling to try and figure out 00:02:33.839 --> 00:02:35.759 why they're following Jesus. 00:02:35.759 --> 00:02:39.520 And we try to sometimes come up with these reasons that 00:02:39.520 --> 00:02:42.160 will inspire people, but in the long run, 00:02:42.160 --> 00:02:44.160 they can also cause some problems. 00:02:44.160 --> 00:02:51.000 So if you're a disciple, and if you're nice to the disciples, 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:53.399 we would like to get beyond that. 00:02:53.399 --> 00:02:57.679 Nothing disturbs me more than when I'm going down the road, 00:02:57.679 --> 00:03:02.919 and I see someone on the corner with a sign that says, 00:03:02.919 --> 00:03:07.279 you know, Christian family man needs help. 00:03:07.279 --> 00:03:10.240 And I always think it's such a condemnation of who 00:03:10.240 --> 00:03:16.000 we've become, because the person has learned over time 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:19.639 that people will not respond to him because he's human. 00:03:19.639 --> 00:03:22.919 They will not respond to him because he's suffering, 00:03:22.919 --> 00:03:28.800 but maybe if he's one of our group, we might respond. 00:03:28.800 --> 00:03:32.839 Like, we'll respond because he's a Christian. 00:03:32.839 --> 00:03:38.440 And it's a real distasteful vision of our faith, 00:03:38.440 --> 00:03:43.559 is that, well, you know, we take care of our own. 00:03:43.559 --> 00:03:46.559 That's really what Jesus is talking about in the original, 00:03:46.559 --> 00:03:48.919 which ends up in the other gospel, about, you know, 00:03:48.919 --> 00:03:50.679 if you don't hate your mother and father, 00:03:50.679 --> 00:03:53.039 he's not asking you to hate people. 00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:55.039 He's saying, if you can't get to the point 00:03:55.039 --> 00:03:58.639 where you hate that idea that some people in the world 00:03:58.639 --> 00:04:02.240 are worth more than others. 00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:05.759 Some people matter, and some don't. 00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:08.039 And unfortunately, over the years, 00:04:08.039 --> 00:04:10.839 that's what we've done with the word family. 00:04:10.839 --> 00:04:13.880 Family are the people who matter more. 00:04:13.880 --> 00:04:16.480 And I don't care whether it's your biological family, 00:04:16.480 --> 00:04:18.880 or your family of friends, or your community, 00:04:18.880 --> 00:04:23.519 or your country, or whatever it is, we matter more. 00:04:23.519 --> 00:04:28.320 And where it sounds totally normal to say, 00:04:28.320 --> 00:04:30.679 of course my family matters more, 00:04:30.679 --> 00:04:32.239 we don't want to really say what we're saying, 00:04:32.239 --> 00:04:36.760 which is, all those other people matter less. 00:04:36.760 --> 00:04:40.839 But one of those statements means the other. 00:04:40.839 --> 00:04:45.399 You know, so who in our life matters less? 00:04:45.399 --> 00:04:49.440 And what are the boundaries of our compassion? 00:04:49.440 --> 00:04:53.399 I think there are a lot of voices nowadays 00:04:53.399 --> 00:04:55.839 that will curtail compassion. 00:04:56.880 --> 00:04:59.959 And they come off as being reasonable, 00:04:59.959 --> 00:05:02.920 and they come off as just thinking things through, 00:05:02.920 --> 00:05:05.880 but they have a history and a bit darker 00:05:05.880 --> 00:05:07.160 edge of the human spirit. 00:05:07.160 --> 00:05:09.079 I always think of people who, you know, 00:05:09.079 --> 00:05:11.200 maybe a hundred years ago, you think of 00:05:11.200 --> 00:05:14.579 where a real Puritan ethic was still in place, 00:05:14.579 --> 00:05:16.299 and someone would say, well, you know, 00:05:16.299 --> 00:05:19.260 there's someone on the street who's starving 00:05:19.260 --> 00:05:20.899 and begging for money, and someone would say, 00:05:20.899 --> 00:05:23.540 well, they'll just spend it on drink. 00:05:25.019 --> 00:05:27.380 Oh, good, now I have a moral reason 00:05:27.380 --> 00:05:28.820 to not be compassionate. 00:05:30.299 --> 00:05:31.779 It's not that I lack compassion, 00:05:31.779 --> 00:05:33.859 I just have a sense of decency. 00:05:35.700 --> 00:05:37.660 What are the ways we talk ourselves out 00:05:37.660 --> 00:05:40.339 of the compassionate response? 00:05:40.339 --> 00:05:43.059 There's all sorts of ways that we talk ourselves 00:05:43.059 --> 00:05:45.579 out of the compassionate response. 00:05:45.579 --> 00:05:49.660 And for Jesus, and when you read the Gospels as a whole, 00:05:49.660 --> 00:05:52.660 compassion is the point. 00:05:52.660 --> 00:05:55.019 This Pope over and over and over again, 00:05:55.019 --> 00:05:56.940 compassion is the point. 00:05:56.940 --> 00:05:59.019 It's not just an act of compassion, 00:05:59.019 --> 00:06:00.899 it's the motivation. 00:06:00.899 --> 00:06:05.140 I always have the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, 00:06:05.140 --> 00:06:07.239 which really are about the only ones left. 00:06:07.239 --> 00:06:11.640 When I hear someone start to say, you know, 00:06:11.640 --> 00:06:14.000 we have to go out and do these acts of charity 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:17.239 in the world so that people will see our Christianity, 00:06:17.239 --> 00:06:19.959 they'll see our faith, that's not the point. 00:06:19.959 --> 00:06:22.279 We aren't charitable to evangelize. 00:06:23.559 --> 00:06:25.320 We have our faith to be charitable. 00:06:26.440 --> 00:06:28.920 Charity is the goal. 00:06:28.920 --> 00:06:31.079 It's not, you know, we aren't going to be 00:06:31.079 --> 00:06:33.440 a compassionate people because it's good PR. 00:06:34.859 --> 00:06:38.279 That's not compassion, that's an agenda. 00:06:38.279 --> 00:06:40.679 You know, we have to get past that hidden agenda 00:06:40.679 --> 00:06:43.440 that says, well, the real point is to inspire them 00:06:43.440 --> 00:06:45.519 to look at us and say, oh my gosh, they're wonderful, 00:06:45.519 --> 00:06:46.600 I'll join them. 00:06:47.720 --> 00:06:49.720 That's not really, the point is, 00:06:49.720 --> 00:06:51.239 because we're one of this group, 00:06:51.239 --> 00:06:54.000 we should have learned by now to respond 00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:56.519 to the compassion that we already have. 00:06:56.519 --> 00:06:58.839 People have compassion very naturally, 00:06:58.839 --> 00:07:01.880 we've learned to talk ourselves out of it. 00:07:01.880 --> 00:07:03.920 Very few people grow up seeing someone 00:07:03.920 --> 00:07:06.519 suffer and not respond, you know. 00:07:06.519 --> 00:07:10.519 And the very few people that do, we actually diagnose. 00:07:11.200 --> 00:07:14.040 That's what, you know, sociopath means. 00:07:14.040 --> 00:07:16.079 I just, no empathy. 00:07:16.079 --> 00:07:19.540 Empathy is a normal, healthy response. 00:07:19.540 --> 00:07:22.640 But we come up with political reasons and economic reasons 00:07:22.640 --> 00:07:25.380 and reasons why, you know, it's okay not to respond 00:07:25.380 --> 00:07:26.679 to those people suffering. 00:07:27.920 --> 00:07:30.600 Every once in a while, and I'm very blessed, 00:07:30.600 --> 00:07:32.579 it does not happen in this parish very often, 00:07:32.579 --> 00:07:36.559 but in my history as a priest, where people would say, 00:07:36.559 --> 00:07:38.519 now Father, do you think that so and so 00:07:38.519 --> 00:07:40.760 should be receiving communion? 00:07:40.760 --> 00:07:45.239 Because, and you know, I always think, 00:07:45.239 --> 00:07:48.140 what they're saying is, isn't there a reason 00:07:48.140 --> 00:07:50.540 that we don't have to be compassionate here? 00:07:50.540 --> 00:07:52.220 Don't we have a reason that can talk us out 00:07:52.220 --> 00:07:53.059 of our compassion? 00:07:53.059 --> 00:07:55.119 Why are we being merciful to that person? 00:07:56.399 --> 00:08:01.160 And someone has taught them that that is a holiness. 00:08:01.160 --> 00:08:03.920 You know, I stand for the truth, you know, 00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:06.399 people, religion's about a lot of things. 00:08:06.399 --> 00:08:08.200 It's about compassion, it's about mercy. 00:08:08.880 --> 00:08:11.000 It is about truth, but people who focus on, 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:13.640 it's about truth are people who need to be able to say, 00:08:13.640 --> 00:08:15.239 and I'm right and you're wrong. 00:08:15.239 --> 00:08:17.000 I have the truth and you don't. 00:08:17.959 --> 00:08:20.399 Compassion doesn't allow me to do that. 00:08:21.399 --> 00:08:23.399 The love of God doesn't allow me to say, you know, 00:08:23.399 --> 00:08:26.399 I mean, it's really less satisfying to run through 00:08:26.399 --> 00:08:29.299 the world saying, I'm compassionate and you're not. 00:08:29.299 --> 00:08:32.520 Kind of falls apart, the very tone of voice, 00:08:32.520 --> 00:08:35.719 the lies that you're not being compassionate at all. 00:08:35.719 --> 00:08:38.679 But, you know, truth, oh, that gets us on our high horse 00:08:38.679 --> 00:08:40.479 about I'm right and you're wrong. 00:08:40.479 --> 00:08:45.479 And it's such a, it's such a blah vision of religion, 00:08:46.900 --> 00:08:49.640 rather than religion that inspires us to go out and say, 00:08:49.640 --> 00:08:53.719 you know, we reach out because God has instilled 00:08:53.719 --> 00:08:56.919 that compassion in us and the voice has given us 00:08:56.919 --> 00:08:59.320 a hundred reasons not to respond. 00:08:59.320 --> 00:09:02.619 What's the voice that talks you out of compassion? 00:09:02.619 --> 00:09:05.520 Sometimes it's the fear that if we start responding 00:09:06.320 --> 00:09:09.039 to every person in need, it will, you know, 00:09:09.039 --> 00:09:10.479 it will consume us. 00:09:10.479 --> 00:09:15.039 It's a devastating moment when Christians realize 00:09:15.039 --> 00:09:16.880 that they're following someone who tells them 00:09:16.880 --> 00:09:18.640 to give their life to others. 00:09:19.960 --> 00:09:22.520 Because, you know, we really just joined to be one 00:09:22.520 --> 00:09:23.559 of the people who were right. 00:09:23.559 --> 00:09:26.159 We didn't think it would actually demand our lives. 00:09:27.599 --> 00:09:29.440 You know, what do you want, blood? 00:09:29.440 --> 00:09:32.000 Well, that's what we took from Jesus on the cross. 00:09:33.840 --> 00:09:35.239 What are we following? 00:09:35.960 --> 00:09:36.799 We're following someone who said, yeah, 00:09:36.799 --> 00:09:38.039 you just respond to the compassion. 00:09:38.039 --> 00:09:42.320 You see someone hurting and you do what you can. 00:09:42.320 --> 00:09:44.440 And that's so simple that it would call us 00:09:44.440 --> 00:09:46.919 to immediate action. 00:09:46.919 --> 00:09:49.559 And if instead we can theologize about it, 00:09:49.559 --> 00:09:53.159 I can live in my head and it doesn't have to interrupt me 00:09:53.159 --> 00:09:54.479 Monday through Saturday. 00:09:56.760 --> 00:09:59.239 It's very tough stuff to say what happens 00:09:59.239 --> 00:10:02.780 if we start to treat the world as our family. 00:10:02.780 --> 00:10:06.299 How would that rewrite my social circle? 00:10:06.299 --> 00:10:10.780 How would really, knowing it's our responsibility 00:10:10.780 --> 00:10:12.219 to respond to the world, 00:10:12.219 --> 00:10:14.020 how would that rewrite our church? 00:10:14.020 --> 00:10:15.739 How would it rewrite our country? 00:10:16.659 --> 00:10:19.260 We come into our celebration of the Fourth of July. 00:10:20.859 --> 00:10:22.380 I've said this a couple times, but you know, 00:10:22.380 --> 00:10:26.099 I kind of wondered all year, and this is not, 00:10:26.099 --> 00:10:28.539 this is not to knock Donald Trump or Hillary 00:10:28.539 --> 00:10:32.619 or anyone else, but when you say make America great, 00:10:33.460 --> 00:10:34.299 what is great? 00:10:34.299 --> 00:10:35.700 Because as Christians, it says, well, 00:10:35.700 --> 00:10:37.099 that means you're going to be the country 00:10:37.099 --> 00:10:39.219 that's most in service of all the others. 00:10:40.859 --> 00:10:43.460 I'll bet you a lot of us don't want to be great. 00:10:44.500 --> 00:10:47.179 A lot of us would rather be prosperous, 00:10:47.179 --> 00:10:50.179 would rather be, you know, I'll be great 00:10:50.179 --> 00:10:52.700 if I can protect myself. 00:10:52.700 --> 00:10:54.780 But what does it mean to be in service to the world, 00:10:54.780 --> 00:10:57.500 to say, oh no, we don't have a family image 00:10:57.500 --> 00:11:01.179 that says the people inside this circle are more important. 00:11:01.179 --> 00:11:03.419 When one of ours is, you know, killed, 00:11:03.419 --> 00:11:05.260 that's a tragedy, and one of theirs is killed, 00:11:05.260 --> 00:11:06.419 it's a statistic. 00:11:07.659 --> 00:11:12.580 It's very hard to grasp what Jesus was getting at, 00:11:12.580 --> 00:11:15.820 that compassion is a universal response, 00:11:15.820 --> 00:11:17.539 but there's a universal ability 00:11:17.539 --> 00:11:20.059 to talk ourselves out of it. 00:11:20.059 --> 00:11:22.919 So what are the voices and the excuses that stop you? 00:11:24.020 --> 00:11:27.179 You know, when you see someone in need, 00:11:27.179 --> 00:11:30.020 and you look the other way, when someone who calls 00:11:30.020 --> 00:11:33.500 who is just the person who is so irritating, 00:11:33.500 --> 00:11:35.940 and they call all the time, and they want a little more, 00:11:35.940 --> 00:11:40.940 and, you know, what is it we use 00:11:40.940 --> 00:11:43.260 to talk ourselves out of compassion? 00:11:43.260 --> 00:11:47.539 There are times we have to say no out of compassion, 00:11:47.539 --> 00:11:51.460 not, well, they'll just spend it on drink. 00:11:51.460 --> 00:11:53.359 But you can't hand someone a drink 00:11:53.359 --> 00:11:55.380 when you know you're going to lead them 00:11:55.380 --> 00:11:57.460 into something that's going to ruin them. 00:11:57.460 --> 00:11:59.520 I get that, you know. 00:11:59.919 --> 00:12:01.640 Being compassionate doesn't mean you get to do the thing 00:12:01.640 --> 00:12:04.200 that feels good all the time. 00:12:04.200 --> 00:12:05.200 So how do we get there? 00:12:05.200 --> 00:12:06.799 How do we get to that point that says, 00:12:06.799 --> 00:12:08.359 how do I learn to see people? 00:12:08.359 --> 00:12:09.880 Well, I think we do start with family. 00:12:09.880 --> 00:12:12.059 That's why family is a good starting place. 00:12:12.059 --> 00:12:14.200 You can even start with a best friend. 00:12:14.200 --> 00:12:16.359 Who's the person in your life, 00:12:17.919 --> 00:12:20.559 let me put it negatively first, 00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:23.479 who's the person in your life that irritates you the least? 00:12:25.359 --> 00:12:28.200 You might go, I don't have one, no. 00:12:30.520 --> 00:12:32.159 You know, who is the person 00:12:32.159 --> 00:12:34.479 you always want to go to lunch with? 00:12:34.479 --> 00:12:37.880 Who is the person you always want to spend more time with? 00:12:37.880 --> 00:12:40.940 How do you respond to one more person that way? 00:12:40.940 --> 00:12:43.039 How do you use that person not as, 00:12:43.039 --> 00:12:45.000 oh, this is the person I just, 00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:46.799 this is the person I want to be with all the time, 00:12:46.799 --> 00:12:50.000 rather than, okay, so God has given me this gift 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:52.320 so I can start to see how I'm to look 00:12:52.320 --> 00:12:53.520 at the rest of the world. 00:12:54.440 --> 00:12:57.719 This is the model, you know. 00:12:57.719 --> 00:12:59.479 We can use it all the time. 00:13:00.239 --> 00:13:01.080 I mean, we can use it on ourselves. 00:13:01.080 --> 00:13:03.400 I always think, if my best friend in the world 00:13:03.400 --> 00:13:05.640 lost their keys for the fifth time today, 00:13:05.640 --> 00:13:07.359 I wouldn't call them an idiot. 00:13:08.200 --> 00:13:11.159 But if I do it, what is wrong with me? 00:13:12.359 --> 00:13:14.679 You know, how many times do we beat ourselves up 00:13:14.679 --> 00:13:17.460 in a way that we would never do to anyone else? 00:13:18.679 --> 00:13:21.239 I sometimes think that the worst thing we could do 00:13:21.239 --> 00:13:23.840 would be to love the world the way we love ourselves. 00:13:24.880 --> 00:13:26.580 Because we're awful to ourselves. 00:13:27.500 --> 00:13:29.580 You know, what happens when we say, 00:13:29.580 --> 00:13:31.900 these are the people who, for whatever reason, 00:13:32.940 --> 00:13:35.099 we connect, we connect easily, 00:13:35.099 --> 00:13:37.140 and I always want the best for them. 00:13:37.140 --> 00:13:38.900 Great, there's your model. 00:13:38.900 --> 00:13:41.260 How many people can you pull into that? 00:13:41.260 --> 00:13:42.739 How can you get to yourself, 00:13:42.739 --> 00:13:44.659 get yourself to the point where 00:13:44.659 --> 00:13:47.020 you can't abide anyone suffering? 00:13:47.020 --> 00:13:48.400 It's a long journey. 00:13:48.400 --> 00:13:50.780 It will consume our lives. 00:13:50.780 --> 00:13:54.260 It will be something that takes every day of the week. 00:13:54.260 --> 00:13:56.299 But that's the following of Jesus. 00:13:57.020 --> 00:13:58.539 That's what he called us to. 00:13:58.539 --> 00:14:02.260 Not to become a community that we can use compassion 00:14:02.260 --> 00:14:04.059 to get people to join us. 00:14:04.059 --> 00:14:05.739 Community doesn't inspire, 00:14:05.739 --> 00:14:08.460 I mean, compassion does not inspire for other reasons. 00:14:08.460 --> 00:14:12.460 Compassion is its own ends. 00:14:12.460 --> 00:14:15.859 It's how Jesus wanted to change the world 00:14:15.859 --> 00:14:18.820 to make it a more compassionate place. 00:14:18.820 --> 00:14:23.140 And we ask God today to teach us new ways to reach out, 00:14:23.140 --> 00:14:24.460 to figure out who this year 00:14:24.460 --> 00:14:27.340 we've had the least compassion for, 00:14:27.340 --> 00:14:29.900 and how do we begin to move beyond that? 00:14:30.940 --> 00:14:33.859 Once we learn to see maybe the person 00:14:33.859 --> 00:14:36.840 who irritates us the most with compassion, 00:14:36.840 --> 00:14:41.840 we've begun to understand the journey and the call of Jesus.

Father Pat's message centers on the transformative call of the Gospel to radical compassion. He challenges conventional readings of Jesus’ words, especially those that seem harsh or exclusionary, urging listeners to discern between the literal voice of Jesus and the contextual voice of the Gospel writers like Matthew. At the heart of his reflection is the idea that Christianity is not about belonging to a favored in-group or acting charitably to evangelize, but about living a life rooted in compassion without boundaries. He critiques the trend of limiting compassion to those within our "family," whether biological, national, or religious, and reminds us that Jesus' mission was to expand our understanding of who deserves love and mercy. Father Pat invites us to examine the excuses we make to avoid compassion and to recognize that following Jesus means allowing ourselves to be consumed by love for others — even those we find most difficult to love. Father Pat begins by inviting his listeners to recognize the contextual and literary nature of Gospel writing, particularly in Matthew. He notes that some of the more demanding or seemingly exclusionary statements attributed to Jesus may reflect the theological needs of Matthew’s community rather than the direct voice of Jesus himself. This distinction is vital because it reframes how we interpret difficult texts — not as prescriptions for rigid behavior but as expressions of deeper theological struggle and community identity. He observes that in moments of crisis, such as the one Matthew’s community likely faced, strong language can emerge to reinforce commitment and separation from the outside world. But this must be weighed against the broader portrait of Jesus in the Gospels — one who is radically inclusive, merciful, and compassionate. The key theme of the homily is compassion — not as a strategy or a means to an end, but as the very heart of Christian discipleship. Father Pat critiques the tendency among Christians to justify selective compassion — for example, helping someone only because they are a “Christian family man” or acting charitably as a form of evangelism. He argues that such motivations dilute the Gospel’s call, reducing acts of mercy to tribalism or public relations. True compassion, he insists, is unconditional. It's not about who the person is to us but about who we are called to be as followers of Jesus. He draws attention to the ways we talk ourselves out of compassion. Whether it's assuming the needy will misuse our help, fearing we’ll be overwhelmed, or hiding behind moral or doctrinal justifications, we often suppress our natural empathetic instincts. Father Pat points out that most people are born with an instinctive response to suffering — it’s the societal, political, and even religious voices that teach us to override it. He offers a diagnosis: when we no longer respond to suffering, it's not because we lack moral clarity, but because we’ve been conditioned to ignore empathy. He even warns that framing religion primarily around “truth” rather than mercy becomes a tool to assert superiority rather than live in humble love. Father Pat challenges the narrowness of the word “family” as it’s used in contemporary faith and politics. He suggests that when we say “family comes first,” we often imply — consciously or not — that others matter less. This mindset, he warns, is incompatible with the Gospel, which calls us to expand our definition of family to include all people, especially the marginalized and forgotten. He applies this critique to broader social and political contexts, including national identity. When notions like “America first” are uncritically accepted, he suggests, they can conflict with the Christian call to global solidarity and service. Greatness, from a Christian perspective, is not about dominance or prosperity but about being the most generous and servant-hearted among nations. To cultivate a universal compassion, Father Pat advises starting with those we love most — the ones we instinctively forgive, understand, and support. He suggests reflecting on how we treat our closest friends and using that as a model for how to approach others, even those we dislike or who challenge our patience. The goal is not to feel warm affection for all people, but to act with the same compassion we would reserve for someone we deeply care about. He even brings this internal, personal dynamic into focus: many of us are harder on ourselves than we would ever be on a friend. Thus, even self-compassion becomes a spiritual discipline in the pursuit of mercy. Ultimately, Father Pat’s message is deeply rooted in the imitation of Christ. Jesus didn’t call people into a self-congratulatory community that used compassion as a tool for conversion. He called them to live lives that were radically open to others, especially the suffering and the outcast. Following Jesus means giving our lives, not just our spare change or surplus time. It is a path that will cost us dearly — in time, energy, and comfort. But it is also the path that leads to the fullness of life promised in the Gospel. Compassion is not the means to a greater end. It is the end. And in practicing it, we participate in the transformative love of God for the world.
