As the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as their money changers, seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area with the sheep and the oxen and spilled the coins of their money changers and overturned their tables. And to those who sold doves, he said, take these out of here and stop making my father's house a marketplace. His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, zeal for your house will consume me. At this, the Jews answered and said to him, what sign can you show us for doing this? Jesus answered and said to them, destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up. The Jews said, this temple has been under construction for 46 years and you will raise it up in three days. But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this and they came to believe the scriptures and the words Jesus had spoken. While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all and he did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. So take a breath. Be calm. I have to tell you something. There are no Ten Commandments. There's probably about 12 or 13 of them jammed in there. And different churches, it's kind of funny, I don't think people know this, but if you go to a Catholic encyclopedia and you look up the Ten Commandments that will number them one through ten, and then if you go to another church, the Lutheran maybe, and you look up the Ten Commandments, you'll see the same ten, but like maybe two and three are combined into one and these two are stretched out into two. And so, you know, when someone who I don't know if they just don't want to say what they've done or what, but when someone comes into a confessional every once in a while, someone will come in and say, I sinned against the Sixth Commandment. I always want to go, Catholic or Protestant? Which numbering system? So we came up with this idea. I don't, I'm not quite sure why the idea of ten, whether it was, you know, you could count to ten without having to use your neighbor's hand. I don't know, but we came to ten, and when you look at them, they kind of, some of them go on for a while and others are just very short, and there's no literary hint. They weren't using bold font or bullet points yet, so there's no literary hint. So when we talk about them, it's kind of difficult when people start saying, well, now, which commandment is that? So there are longer lists in Deuteronomy and numbers, but this is kind of the one that we all talk about when we say the Ten Commandments, and it's got some problems that we have to figure out, and I think what we should do above all of them is grasp the first one. If we can get to the first one, we're in great shape, which is, you know, we worship God, period, nothing else. Just God, don't have any other gods, and of course, depending on the era that you hear the preaching come out of, they'll talk about, well, you know, a lot of people worship instead of God, and they'll throw out whatever the sin is of the day. Money has been, for a long time, people have said money, but it's not really money. People just sort of worship power, having their own power, and money may be a sign of that for some people. But this is a really tough, Peter had to do it today, but at every one of these masses, someone has to get up and says, you shall not carve idols for yourself in the shape of anything, and they kind of have to stand about two feet in front of that cross while they say it. You shall not carve any idols, and hide it, you know. We do, so how do we handle that? Because we understand what the real underlying law is, which is, the reason they weren't to carve idols is because they had this habit of really worshiping them, and there are some people who still do that. They, you know, they still think that there is a magic in the artifact itself, that there's somehow it's a talisman, it's a, no, it's an image that points us to God. It's got to point us to God. Even for many people, they worship Scripture, and it can be very devastating because they kind of cherry pick their way through to get what they want, but normally, when people put Scripture above God, you know, they have this sense that we've all been taught God is loving and God is kind, and when it's time to get mad at someone, they won't say, well, you know, God's love fails. When they've decided someone's a sinner or someone's not worthy or, they always, you'll hear the phrase, well, it says in the Bible, they're worshiping the Bible instead of God. It's really a precarious path to not let other things replace God, and the reason for that is because God is too big. We can't get our mind around God, so we have to choose and settle on smaller images to get our mind in the right direction. We just can't confuse those images with the actuality of God, and it is, you know, it is a much subtler and more difficult thing than most of us really want to deal with on a daily basis. It's easier just to talk to an imaginary white man on a cloud in my head. It's just easier, but, and there's nothing wrong with that until he starts to sound a little bit too much like me, until, you know, it starts to justify the way I see the world and, quite frankly, condemns most of you, you know, until, it's just, it's a more dangerous approach because the smaller our vision of God, the more easily we start to control it. One of the first kind of modern scripture scholars in the church, a man by the last name Schweitzer, wrote that his famous line was, God created humanity in his own image and humanity's been creating God in theirs ever since. That it's just too easy to try and make a human person, a person out of God, rather than we use the word person to point beyond. So, with that sense, we look at this, Jesus cleansing the temple. It's a very difficult scripture, and people will say, well, you know, you don't get too loose with the interpretation. This is what it says, and for most people, they would say, you know, I don't know, set up a 50-foot perimeter around the church and don't let anyone sell anything, and you're good to go. That's a very small reading of the scripture, and as a matter of fact, if you want to be that literal, all it really says is, don't sell livestock. It's so funny that everyone's like, you can't sell Girl Scout cookies. Do not mess with the Girl Scout cookies. You know, no, and it's interesting. After it talks about all these various things, the gospel writer goes back and points out again, he specially goes up to the ones selling doves, and what we don't see. They're selling the sacrifices that people had to make when they came into the temple. They're selling entrance into the temple. They're selling entrance into the experience of God. People believed that they couldn't experience God outside the temple, and you've got some very unscrupulous people trying to make a buck off people so you can't come into church until you've paid your dues. You know, and literally, there are writers who will tell you it got so mobbed up by the time of Jesus that you would come and you would have your sacrifice, and the temple guard would say, you know, I'm pretty sure that is blemished. I don't think that's acceptable, but my cousin Vinny over here is selling some lovely unblemished doves, and it was really a racket, and so this is not an edict that says there's something wrong with buying or selling, or that somehow buying and selling in our lives, you know, buying groceries is somehow a horribly unsacred act or something. Not at all. What it's saying is don't try to control and profit from that control about people's access to God. You don't control their access to God, and you certainly don't try to profit by controlling other people's access to God. It is, I would actually say it is the only sin that habitually sends Jesus over the edge in the Gospels. When he's screaming you viper's brood, he's talking about people who have put a whole bunch of, you know, regulations on who can come to the temple and who can't come to the temple, and who is appropriate and who isn't, and those are always the people he blows up at, and I think the reason is because some people, especially with faith, but it happens in culture, it happens in families, it happens in countries, it happens all over the place. Usually, an over-focused sort of energy around the border usually means you've lost the heart, that we don't define our faith from knowing where the center is, so instead we just make sure we've got a fence around it. There's a difference between knowing where the center of your faith is. It's not about where's the fence you don't cross, it's knowing the center, and that brings us back to it's gotta be God, it can't be other things, and if it is, if you make God into something smaller, you'll center your faith in all sorts of odd places, and then we don't know how to be a community because our centers are different. We can all have our own sense of where the boundaries are. Everyone does have their own sense of boundaries. I know people with no boundaries at all. I call them family. But our center, and I think many of us don't always stop to think that it's not knowing, because we like to talk about what's the non-negotiable? There's the line, you don't cross the line, and Paul talks about not drawing those lines in the sand, but knowing where your center is, and so as we continue Lent, as we, you know, this is where Lent is not, you know, Lent becomes this sort of, you drop away things that aren't so necessary. I always think that people think that Lent should be a tough journey. I think well done, Lent should be the most easily uplifting season of the year, because what happens if you do it right is, whatever you give up, for people who give something up instead of doing something extra, if you give something up, the hope is, you start to realize about three weeks down the road, I'm not less happy. I'm not worse off. All those things I thought I needed, I don't, and there's this freedom that comes with that, and we start to get rid of the clutter on the fringes and find our center, and find what is important, you know, not as a line we don't cross, but as a center that is our core, and so we ask God to help us to get rid of the distractions, get rid of things that pull our focus into the periphery all the time. You know, all the arguments, I find myself now much more focused if I don't turn on the news. You know, it's just, it's back and forth and the same stuff all the time, and I'm like, what happens when we find our center? If our center is the God that we know we will spend our life moving towards, spend our life trying to understand, but we'll never spend our life, we'll never get our mind around God. You know, out of that, I think, really comes this humility that Jesus talks so much about, the humility that we worship a God that we cannot completely understand, and anyone, you know, there was a, I can't remember who it was, it might have been, I'm gonna get through the wrong name, so I won't give you anyone, but used to battle with Thomas Aquinas all the time. Thomas Aquinas was a brilliant academic, and the lines that you always read, he's always saying, oh, Thomas, you're so busy explaining the unexplainable. You know, you're always so busy trying to articulate the mystery, and his point was, it's brilliant, and it's wonderful to delve in and say, I think I understand more than I did yesterday, but I'll never get closer to infinite. I'll always have more to learn, and there's a humility there, and so we ask God today to make us a people who are more aware of our center, that we get back to who we are, that we get a sense of where is God, what is love, what is caring, what is compassion, what are the core values we are called to? Not what are the borders that we think they're not called to, but what are our core values? Because if we lose our core, the perimeter will mean nothing.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 1.0, "text": " The Lord be with you.", "tokens": [50364, 440, 3257, 312, 365, WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.000 The Lord be with you. 00:00:01.100 --> 00:00:02.599 And with your spirit. 00:00:02.700 --> 00:00:04.840 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. 00:00:08.939 --> 00:00:11.739 As the Passover of the Jews was near, 00:00:11.840 --> 00:00:13.140 Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 00:00:13.239 --> 00:00:15.640 He found in the temple area those 00:00:15.739 --> 00:00:18.680 who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as their money 00:00:18.780 --> 00:00:21.059 changers, seated there. 00:00:21.159 --> 00:00:23.459 He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out 00:00:23.559 --> 00:00:25.459 of the temple area with the sheep and the oxen 00:00:25.559 --> 00:00:27.860 and spilled the coins of their money changers 00:00:27.959 --> 00:00:29.959 and overturned their tables. 00:00:30.059 --> 00:00:33.520 And to those who sold doves, he said, take these out of here 00:00:33.619 --> 00:00:37.400 and stop making my father's house a marketplace. 00:00:37.500 --> 00:00:41.099 His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, 00:00:41.200 --> 00:00:44.680 zeal for your house will consume me. 00:00:44.779 --> 00:00:47.240 At this, the Jews answered and said to him, what sign can 00:00:47.340 --> 00:00:49.740 you show us for doing this? 00:00:49.840 --> 00:00:52.319 Jesus answered and said to them, destroy this temple 00:00:52.419 --> 00:00:55.319 and in three days I will raise it up. 00:00:55.439 --> 00:00:57.840 The Jews said, this temple has been under construction 00:00:57.939 --> 00:01:02.020 for 46 years and you will raise it up in three days. 00:01:02.119 --> 00:01:04.720 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 00:01:04.819 --> 00:01:06.660 Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, 00:01:06.760 --> 00:01:09.519 his disciples remembered that he had said this 00:01:09.620 --> 00:01:11.919 and they came to believe the scriptures and the words 00:01:12.019 --> 00:01:14.559 Jesus had spoken. 00:01:14.660 --> 00:01:17.360 While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, 00:01:17.459 --> 00:01:19.760 many began to believe in his name 00:01:19.860 --> 00:01:22.139 when they saw the signs he was doing. 00:01:22.239 --> 00:01:24.099 But Jesus would not trust himself to them 00:01:24.180 --> 00:01:26.319 because he knew them all and he did not 00:01:26.419 --> 00:01:29.319 need anyone to testify about human nature. 00:01:29.419 --> 00:01:32.800 He himself understood it well. 00:01:32.900 --> 00:01:34.500 The gospel of the Lord. 00:01:34.599 --> 00:01:36.500 Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:49.639 So take a breath. 00:01:49.739 --> 00:01:50.739 Be calm. 00:01:50.839 --> 00:01:53.279 I have to tell you something. 00:01:53.459 --> 00:01:56.900 There are no Ten Commandments. 00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:01.080 There's probably about 12 or 13 of them jammed in there. 00:02:01.180 --> 00:02:03.279 And different churches, it's kind of funny, 00:02:03.379 --> 00:02:04.440 I don't think people know this, 00:02:04.540 --> 00:02:07.319 but if you go to a Catholic encyclopedia 00:02:07.419 --> 00:02:08.740 and you look up the Ten Commandments 00:02:08.839 --> 00:02:10.339 that will number them one through ten, 00:02:10.440 --> 00:02:12.320 and then if you go to another church, 00:02:12.419 --> 00:02:14.380 the Lutheran maybe, and you look up the Ten Commandments, 00:02:14.479 --> 00:02:17.860 you'll see the same ten, but like maybe two and three 00:02:17.960 --> 00:02:19.820 are combined into one and these two 00:02:19.919 --> 00:02:21.559 are stretched out into two. 00:02:21.639 --> 00:02:24.179 And so, you know, when someone who I don't know 00:02:24.279 --> 00:02:26.179 if they just don't want to say what they've done or what, 00:02:26.279 --> 00:02:27.779 but when someone comes into a confessional 00:02:27.880 --> 00:02:29.880 every once in a while, someone will come in and say, 00:02:29.979 --> 00:02:32.820 I sinned against the Sixth Commandment. 00:02:32.919 --> 00:02:36.559 I always want to go, Catholic or Protestant? 00:02:36.660 --> 00:02:38.460 Which numbering system? 00:02:38.559 --> 00:02:40.960 So we came up with this idea. 00:02:41.059 --> 00:02:46.039 I don't, I'm not quite sure why the idea of ten, 00:02:46.139 --> 00:02:49.699 whether it was, you know, you could count to ten 00:02:49.740 --> 00:02:51.639 without having to use your neighbor's hand. 00:02:51.740 --> 00:02:54.080 I don't know, but we came to ten, 00:02:54.179 --> 00:02:55.979 and when you look at them, they kind of, 00:02:56.080 --> 00:02:57.520 some of them go on for a while 00:02:57.619 --> 00:02:59.279 and others are just very short, 00:02:59.380 --> 00:03:03.619 and there's no literary hint. 00:03:03.720 --> 00:03:06.919 They weren't using bold font or bullet points yet, 00:03:07.020 --> 00:03:09.000 so there's no literary hint. 00:03:09.100 --> 00:03:12.500 So when we talk about them, it's kind of difficult 00:03:12.600 --> 00:03:13.460 when people start saying, 00:03:13.559 --> 00:03:15.440 well, now, which commandment is that? 00:03:15.539 --> 00:03:19.399 So there are longer lists in Deuteronomy and numbers, 00:03:19.699 --> 00:03:22.199 but this is kind of the one that we all talk about 00:03:22.300 --> 00:03:24.000 when we say the Ten Commandments, 00:03:24.100 --> 00:03:29.020 and it's got some problems that we have to figure out, 00:03:29.119 --> 00:03:31.979 and I think what we should do above all of them 00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:33.919 is grasp the first one. 00:03:34.020 --> 00:03:37.020 If we can get to the first one, we're in great shape, 00:03:37.119 --> 00:03:41.860 which is, you know, we worship God, period, nothing else. 00:03:41.960 --> 00:03:44.220 Just God, don't have any other gods, 00:03:44.320 --> 00:03:46.660 and of course, depending on the era 00:03:46.759 --> 00:03:48.399 that you hear the preaching come out of, 00:03:48.500 --> 00:03:49.559 they'll talk about, well, you know, 00:03:49.660 --> 00:03:51.600 a lot of people worship instead of God, 00:03:51.699 --> 00:03:54.399 and they'll throw out whatever the sin is of the day. 00:03:54.500 --> 00:03:57.399 Money has been, for a long time, people have said money, 00:03:57.500 --> 00:03:59.279 but it's not really money. 00:03:59.380 --> 00:04:01.880 People just sort of worship power, 00:04:01.979 --> 00:04:02.919 having their own power, 00:04:03.020 --> 00:04:07.419 and money may be a sign of that for some people. 00:04:07.520 --> 00:04:12.080 But this is a really tough, Peter had to do it today, 00:04:12.179 --> 00:04:14.320 but at every one of these masses, 00:04:14.419 --> 00:04:18.059 someone has to get up and says, 00:04:18.119 --> 00:04:20.619 you shall not carve idols for yourself 00:04:20.720 --> 00:04:21.859 in the shape of anything, 00:04:21.959 --> 00:04:23.959 and they kind of have to stand about two feet 00:04:24.059 --> 00:04:26.899 in front of that cross while they say it. 00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:31.500 You shall not carve any idols, and hide it, you know. 00:04:31.600 --> 00:04:34.799 We do, so how do we handle that? 00:04:34.899 --> 00:04:39.880 Because we understand what the real underlying law is, 00:04:39.980 --> 00:04:43.079 which is, the reason they weren't to carve idols 00:04:43.179 --> 00:04:46.820 is because they had this habit of really worshiping them, 00:04:46.880 --> 00:04:49.679 and there are some people who still do that. 00:04:49.779 --> 00:04:53.019 They, you know, they still think that there is a magic 00:04:53.119 --> 00:04:55.920 in the artifact itself, 00:04:56.019 --> 00:04:58.899 that there's somehow it's a talisman, it's a, 00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:01.420 no, it's an image that points us to God. 00:05:01.519 --> 00:05:03.359 It's got to point us to God. 00:05:03.459 --> 00:05:06.660 Even for many people, they worship Scripture, 00:05:08.299 --> 00:05:10.540 and it can be very devastating 00:05:10.640 --> 00:05:13.299 because they kind of cherry pick their way through 00:05:13.399 --> 00:05:15.000 to get what they want, 00:05:15.320 --> 00:05:17.859 but normally, when people put Scripture above God, 00:05:17.959 --> 00:05:20.820 you know, they have this sense that we've all been taught 00:05:20.920 --> 00:05:22.500 God is loving and God is kind, 00:05:22.600 --> 00:05:24.940 and when it's time to get mad at someone, 00:05:25.040 --> 00:05:28.899 they won't say, well, you know, God's love fails. 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:30.440 When they've decided someone's a sinner 00:05:30.540 --> 00:05:31.940 or someone's not worthy or, 00:05:32.040 --> 00:05:33.700 they always, you'll hear the phrase, 00:05:33.799 --> 00:05:35.779 well, it says in the Bible, 00:05:37.579 --> 00:05:40.179 they're worshiping the Bible instead of God. 00:05:40.260 --> 00:05:45.140 It's really a precarious path 00:05:45.239 --> 00:05:48.500 to not let other things replace God, 00:05:48.600 --> 00:05:52.980 and the reason for that is because God is too big. 00:05:53.079 --> 00:05:54.619 We can't get our mind around God, 00:05:54.720 --> 00:05:59.720 so we have to choose and settle on smaller images 00:06:01.760 --> 00:06:04.059 to get our mind in the right direction. 00:06:04.160 --> 00:06:06.559 We just can't confuse those images 00:06:06.660 --> 00:06:09.660 with the actuality of God, 00:06:09.739 --> 00:06:14.739 and it is, you know, it is a much subtler 00:06:14.839 --> 00:06:17.119 and more difficult thing than most of us 00:06:17.220 --> 00:06:19.820 really want to deal with on a daily basis. 00:06:19.920 --> 00:06:23.760 It's easier just to talk to an imaginary white man 00:06:23.859 --> 00:06:26.019 on a cloud in my head. 00:06:26.119 --> 00:06:28.260 It's just easier, but, 00:06:28.359 --> 00:06:30.019 and there's nothing wrong with that 00:06:30.119 --> 00:06:35.100 until he starts to sound a little bit too much like me, 00:06:35.200 --> 00:06:37.899 until, you know, it starts to justify 00:06:37.940 --> 00:06:40.140 the way I see the world and, quite frankly, 00:06:40.239 --> 00:06:43.019 condemns most of you, you know, 00:06:43.119 --> 00:06:47.420 until, it's just, it's a more dangerous approach 00:06:47.519 --> 00:06:50.859 because the smaller our vision of God, 00:06:50.959 --> 00:06:54.500 the more easily we start to control it. 00:06:54.600 --> 00:06:59.059 One of the first kind of modern scripture scholars 00:06:59.160 --> 00:07:02.200 in the church, a man by the last name Schweitzer, 00:07:02.299 --> 00:07:05.100 wrote that his famous line was, 00:07:05.200 --> 00:07:07.540 God created humanity in his own image 00:07:07.540 --> 00:07:12.140 and humanity's been creating God in theirs ever since. 00:07:12.239 --> 00:07:17.720 That it's just too easy to try and make a human person, 00:07:17.820 --> 00:07:19.559 a person out of God, 00:07:19.660 --> 00:07:22.899 rather than we use the word person to point beyond. 00:07:23.000 --> 00:07:27.160 So, with that sense, we look at this, 00:07:27.260 --> 00:07:30.839 Jesus cleansing the temple. 00:07:30.940 --> 00:07:32.940 It's a very difficult scripture, 00:07:33.040 --> 00:07:34.540 and people will say, well, you know, 00:07:34.640 --> 00:07:36.440 you don't get too loose with the interpretation. 00:07:36.440 --> 00:07:38.600 This is what it says, and for most people, 00:07:38.700 --> 00:07:40.579 they would say, you know, I don't know, 00:07:40.679 --> 00:07:43.720 set up a 50-foot perimeter around the church 00:07:43.820 --> 00:07:45.720 and don't let anyone sell anything, 00:07:45.820 --> 00:07:49.019 and you're good to go. 00:07:49.119 --> 00:07:51.380 That's a very small reading of the scripture, 00:07:51.480 --> 00:07:53.459 and as a matter of fact, if you want to be that literal, 00:07:53.559 --> 00:07:58.399 all it really says is, don't sell livestock. 00:07:58.500 --> 00:08:00.260 It's so funny that everyone's like, 00:08:00.359 --> 00:08:04.100 you can't sell Girl Scout cookies. 00:08:04.320 --> 00:08:08.399 Do not mess with the Girl Scout cookies. 00:08:08.500 --> 00:08:11.299 You know, no, and it's interesting. 00:08:11.399 --> 00:08:14.480 After it talks about all these various things, 00:08:14.579 --> 00:08:17.200 the gospel writer goes back and points out again, 00:08:17.299 --> 00:08:20.820 he specially goes up to the ones selling doves, 00:08:20.920 --> 00:08:22.239 and what we don't see. 00:08:22.339 --> 00:08:26.720 They're selling the sacrifices that people had to make 00:08:26.820 --> 00:08:28.220 when they came into the temple. 00:08:28.320 --> 00:08:32.020 They're selling entrance into the temple. 00:08:32.080 --> 00:08:35.619 They're selling entrance into the experience of God. 00:08:35.719 --> 00:08:37.679 People believed that they couldn't experience God 00:08:37.780 --> 00:08:40.679 outside the temple, and you've got some very 00:08:40.780 --> 00:08:44.020 unscrupulous people trying to make a buck off people 00:08:44.119 --> 00:08:48.200 so you can't come into church until you've paid your dues. 00:08:48.299 --> 00:08:50.900 You know, and literally, there are writers 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:53.940 who will tell you it got so mobbed up 00:08:54.039 --> 00:08:56.099 by the time of Jesus that you would come 00:08:56.200 --> 00:08:58.239 and you would have your sacrifice, 00:08:58.340 --> 00:09:00.000 and the temple guard would say, 00:09:00.059 --> 00:09:03.059 you know, I'm pretty sure that is blemished. 00:09:03.159 --> 00:09:04.359 I don't think that's acceptable, 00:09:04.460 --> 00:09:06.559 but my cousin Vinny over here is selling 00:09:06.659 --> 00:09:10.299 some lovely unblemished doves, 00:09:10.400 --> 00:09:13.039 and it was really a racket, 00:09:13.140 --> 00:09:18.140 and so this is not an edict that says 00:09:18.840 --> 00:09:22.580 there's something wrong with buying or selling, 00:09:22.679 --> 00:09:26.419 or that somehow buying and selling in our lives, 00:09:26.520 --> 00:09:28.820 you know, buying groceries is somehow 00:09:28.880 --> 00:09:32.179 a horribly unsacred act or something. 00:09:32.280 --> 00:09:33.520 Not at all. 00:09:33.619 --> 00:09:37.580 What it's saying is don't try to control 00:09:37.679 --> 00:09:41.919 and profit from that control about people's access to God. 00:09:42.020 --> 00:09:43.919 You don't control their access to God, 00:09:44.020 --> 00:09:46.559 and you certainly don't try to profit 00:09:46.659 --> 00:09:49.599 by controlling other people's access to God. 00:09:49.700 --> 00:09:54.239 It is, I would actually say it is the only sin 00:09:54.340 --> 00:09:58.479 that habitually sends Jesus over the edge 00:09:58.539 --> 00:10:00.440 in the Gospels. 00:10:00.539 --> 00:10:02.539 When he's screaming you viper's brood, 00:10:02.640 --> 00:10:05.179 he's talking about people who have put a whole bunch 00:10:05.280 --> 00:10:08.739 of, you know, regulations on who can come to the temple 00:10:08.840 --> 00:10:09.880 and who can't come to the temple, 00:10:09.979 --> 00:10:11.979 and who is appropriate and who isn't, 00:10:12.080 --> 00:10:15.260 and those are always the people he blows up at, 00:10:15.359 --> 00:10:19.820 and I think the reason is because some people, 00:10:19.919 --> 00:10:22.059 especially with faith, but it happens in culture, 00:10:22.159 --> 00:10:24.119 it happens in families, it happens in countries, 00:10:24.219 --> 00:10:26.299 it happens all over the place. 00:10:26.520 --> 00:10:31.520 Usually, an over-focused sort of energy 00:10:33.260 --> 00:10:38.260 around the border usually means you've lost the heart, 00:10:39.840 --> 00:10:42.599 that we don't define our faith from knowing 00:10:42.700 --> 00:10:45.299 where the center is, so instead we just make sure 00:10:45.400 --> 00:10:47.580 we've got a fence around it. 00:10:47.679 --> 00:10:48.780 There's a difference between knowing 00:10:48.880 --> 00:10:51.280 where the center of your faith is. 00:10:51.380 --> 00:10:54.219 It's not about where's the fence you don't cross, 00:10:54.299 --> 00:10:57.780 it's knowing the center, and that brings us back to 00:10:57.880 --> 00:11:02.039 it's gotta be God, it can't be other things, 00:11:02.140 --> 00:11:05.280 and if it is, if you make God into something smaller, 00:11:05.380 --> 00:11:09.820 you'll center your faith in all sorts of odd places, 00:11:09.919 --> 00:11:12.780 and then we don't know how to be a community 00:11:12.880 --> 00:11:15.500 because our centers are different. 00:11:15.599 --> 00:11:18.559 We can all have our own sense of where the boundaries are. 00:11:18.659 --> 00:11:21.299 Everyone does have their own sense of boundaries. 00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:24.820 I know people with no boundaries at all. 00:11:24.919 --> 00:11:26.419 I call them family. 00:11:26.520 --> 00:11:31.520 But our center, and I think many of us 00:11:33.859 --> 00:11:36.599 don't always stop to think that it's not knowing, 00:11:36.700 --> 00:11:38.900 because we like to talk about what's the non-negotiable? 00:11:39.000 --> 00:11:40.559 There's the line, you don't cross the line, 00:11:40.659 --> 00:11:44.739 and Paul talks about not drawing those lines in the sand, 00:11:44.840 --> 00:11:47.400 but knowing where your center is, 00:11:47.500 --> 00:11:50.239 and so as we continue Lent, as we, 00:11:50.280 --> 00:11:51.820 you know, this is where Lent is not, 00:11:51.919 --> 00:11:53.619 you know, Lent becomes this sort of, 00:11:53.719 --> 00:11:57.080 you drop away things that aren't so necessary. 00:11:57.179 --> 00:11:58.619 I always think that people think that Lent 00:11:58.719 --> 00:12:00.219 should be a tough journey. 00:12:00.320 --> 00:12:03.299 I think well done, Lent should be the most easily 00:12:03.400 --> 00:12:06.099 uplifting season of the year, because what happens 00:12:06.200 --> 00:12:09.900 if you do it right is, whatever you give up, 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:11.140 for people who give something up 00:12:11.239 --> 00:12:12.340 instead of doing something extra, 00:12:12.440 --> 00:12:14.599 if you give something up, the hope is, 00:12:14.700 --> 00:12:17.580 you start to realize about three weeks down the road, 00:12:17.679 --> 00:12:19.080 I'm not less happy. 00:12:20.940 --> 00:12:23.580 I'm not worse off. 00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:28.080 All those things I thought I needed, I don't, 00:12:28.179 --> 00:12:30.960 and there's this freedom that comes with that, 00:12:31.059 --> 00:12:34.419 and we start to get rid of the clutter on the fringes 00:12:34.520 --> 00:12:39.200 and find our center, and find what is important, 00:12:39.299 --> 00:12:42.239 you know, not as a line we don't cross, 00:12:42.340 --> 00:12:44.799 but as a center that is our core, 00:12:44.900 --> 00:12:48.700 and so we ask God to help us to get rid of the distractions, 00:12:48.760 --> 00:12:51.359 get rid of things that pull our focus 00:12:51.460 --> 00:12:53.400 into the periphery all the time. 00:12:53.500 --> 00:12:57.179 You know, all the arguments, I find myself now 00:12:57.280 --> 00:13:00.179 much more focused if I don't turn on the news. 00:13:00.280 --> 00:13:02.440 You know, it's just, it's back and forth 00:13:02.539 --> 00:13:03.739 and the same stuff all the time, 00:13:03.840 --> 00:13:08.020 and I'm like, what happens when we find our center? 00:13:08.119 --> 00:13:11.460 If our center is the God that we know 00:13:11.559 --> 00:13:15.219 we will spend our life moving towards, 00:13:15.320 --> 00:13:17.820 spend our life trying to understand, 00:13:17.840 --> 00:13:19.039 but we'll never spend our life, 00:13:19.140 --> 00:13:21.880 we'll never get our mind around God. 00:13:21.979 --> 00:13:24.460 You know, out of that, I think, really comes this humility 00:13:24.559 --> 00:13:26.580 that Jesus talks so much about, 00:13:26.679 --> 00:13:28.460 the humility that we worship a God 00:13:28.559 --> 00:13:31.320 that we cannot completely understand, 00:13:31.419 --> 00:13:33.359 and anyone, you know, there was a, 00:13:33.460 --> 00:13:35.799 I can't remember who it was, it might have been, 00:13:35.900 --> 00:13:36.799 I'm gonna get through the wrong name, 00:13:36.900 --> 00:13:38.159 so I won't give you anyone, 00:13:38.260 --> 00:13:40.960 but used to battle with Thomas Aquinas all the time. 00:13:41.059 --> 00:13:45.599 Thomas Aquinas was a brilliant academic, 00:13:45.659 --> 00:13:47.460 and the lines that you always read, 00:13:47.559 --> 00:13:49.260 he's always saying, 00:13:49.359 --> 00:13:54.159 oh, Thomas, you're so busy explaining the unexplainable. 00:13:54.260 --> 00:13:55.700 You know, you're always so busy 00:13:55.799 --> 00:13:58.940 trying to articulate the mystery, 00:13:59.039 --> 00:14:01.340 and his point was, it's brilliant, 00:14:01.440 --> 00:14:03.400 and it's wonderful to delve in and say, 00:14:03.500 --> 00:14:06.580 I think I understand more than I did yesterday, 00:14:06.679 --> 00:14:09.619 but I'll never get closer to infinite. 00:14:09.719 --> 00:14:11.520 I'll always have more to learn, 00:14:11.619 --> 00:14:13.219 and there's a humility there, 00:14:13.320 --> 00:14:15.119 and so we ask God today to make us a people 00:14:15.239 --> 00:14:17.099 who are more aware of our center, 00:14:17.200 --> 00:14:18.780 that we get back to who we are, 00:14:18.880 --> 00:14:21.340 that we get a sense of where is God, 00:14:21.440 --> 00:14:24.479 what is love, what is caring, what is compassion, 00:14:24.580 --> 00:14:28.219 what are the core values we are called to? 00:14:28.320 --> 00:14:29.760 Not what are the borders that we think 00:14:29.859 --> 00:14:34.260 they're not called to, but what are our core values? 00:14:34.359 --> 00:14:37.200 Because if we lose our core, 00:14:37.299 --> 00:14:39.359 the perimeter will mean nothing.

Father Pat's message centers on the idea that true faith is not about rigid boundaries, rules, or external signs of holiness, but about a deep, centered relationship with God that is uncluttered by idols—be they physical, doctrinal, or ideological. He uses Jesus’ cleansing of the temple to challenge how institutions, individuals, and even religious practices can distort access to God, commodify spirituality, and replace divine mystery with controllable, human-centered constructs. Ultimately, Father Pat calls us to humility, reminding us that God is beyond comprehension, and our journey of faith should be aimed at moving toward that mystery, not reducing it to manageable ideas or systems. Lent, then, becomes a season not of deprivation but of liberation—letting go of distractions to rediscover our center in God. Father Pat begins by reflecting on the Gospel passage where Jesus drives out the money changers from the temple. He cautions against a simplistic interpretation of this event as merely a prohibition against commerce within sacred spaces. Instead, he urges a deeper reading: Jesus’ anger is directed at the exploitation of the faithful and the corruption of religious access. The traders were not just selling animals—they were monetizing people’s access to God, creating barriers for those seeking divine connection. Jesus’ righteous anger is not about economic activity per se, but about the manipulation and commodification of the sacred. This leads Father Pat into a broader discussion about the Ten Commandments, emphasizing their complexity and variations in numbering across Christian traditions. He humorously points out how people sometimes cite commandments by number without awareness of these differences, suggesting a surface-level engagement with moral law. He challenges the idea of reducing God’s will to a list of rules, instead advocating for a return to the foundational commandment: worship God alone. The danger, he explains, lies in replacing God with idols—not just in the form of graven images, but in subtler forms like power, money, or even Scripture itself when it is wielded as a weapon to judge rather than a guide toward divine love. He draws attention to how people sometimes idolize Scripture, using it selectively to condemn others rather than seeking the heart of God’s message. This, he asserts, is a form of idolatry, replacing the living mystery of God with a static, controllable interpretation of divine will. Father Pat warns that when our image of God aligns too closely with our own biases and judgments, we risk worshipping a reflection of ourselves rather than the true, unknowable God. The sermon further explores how religious institutions and individuals can become gatekeepers, creating fences to determine who is “in” or “out” of the faith community. Father Pat suggests that this focus on boundaries often signals a loss of connection to the center—God. He points out that Jesus often reserved his harshest words not for the marginalized or the sinner, but for those who enforced exclusionary rules and profited from religious authority. The real spiritual danger, then, is not impurity or imperfection, but the self-righteousness that seeks to control others’ access to God. Father Pat then turns to the season of Lent, not as a time of suffering or mere sacrifice, but as an opportunity to refocus on the center of our faith. Lent becomes a spiritual decluttering, letting go of the peripheral things that distract us so we can rediscover our core values: love, humility, compassion, and the pursuit of God’s mystery. He notes that when we let go of unnecessary attachments—whether material or ideological—we often find ourselves no less happy, but more free and more connected to what truly matters. Finally, Father Pat invites us into a posture of humility. He quotes the idea that humanity has been making God in its own image ever since the beginning, warning against the temptation to shrink God into something we can fully understand or control. Instead, he encourages us to embrace the mystery, to admit that we will never fully comprehend the infinite, and to find peace in the journey rather than in grasping for certainty. True faith, then, is not about knowing the limits, but about being rooted in the center—God’s love—and recognizing that all else must flow from that source.
