Glory to you, O Lord. When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second is like it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. So as many of you may know, I mentioned last week, I went on a five-day silent retreat. So get comfortable. I have some talking to make up for. Not talked in a while. But I always bring a book. And I thought, you know, I should, I confess, most of the theology I read in the last several years falls in what I would call the marginalized categories of theology. Once in a while, I read about dialogues with kind of smaller, obscure, almost run-over religions. Not our own. But in our own faith, and I tend to gravitate towards feminist theology, liberation theology, Mujeres theology, Latino theology, and a friend of mine who saw what I was reading before the retreat started, we got like a social hour that was like, catch up and then shut up. And, but he said, you know, it's probably really good that you do that because you have to reach out and you have to understand so many people. And I said to him, you know, you have to understand, I don't read these theologies to be more effective or to see it from this person's point of view. I mean, those are all good things. The reason I read them is because the images of God that have been produced by privilege, by those who are well-housed and well-clothed and well, you know, fed in the palaces of Europe for 2,000 years, those images of God don't feed me. The images of God that are stuck in authority and keeping people in their place are so distant from the God of Jesus Christ that we have to sometimes get beyond the theology of the majority to find the God of the poor. We can't get there any other way. And so you start to read these theologies and it's interesting how we look at things that we can see from the majority perspective and we've kind of put our own interpretation on it. I think it is the greatest sin of being in the privileged class that you feel you have a right to interpret everyone else's life. So we'll go in and we'll see pictures of Hispanic Catholicism and we'll see houses that have little statues of Mary and things and we'll think, how folkloric. Rather than really understanding that in a theology that grew up where they were not as, you know, they didn't have as many priests so they became less priest-dependent that the church often happened at home. And when there were no priests around, Abuela gave the blessings and said the prayers and cried for the children. And they don't have, they will never have quite the we come here for our sacred space that other cultures have. It will always bleed into the public life and their public life will come back to church and that's why, you know, everyone says, well why do they do quinceaneras at church? Because they don't have the strong wall between this space and the rest of the world that we developed in a world of structure, in a world of authority and who's in charge, that's a different culture. And so you find God in these different cultures and you can slowly struggle with the living God. The God that we hear today, the God who says, you know, you have to, you are measured by how you treat the stranger. Not how you treat the people that are important to you and that can do back for you. How you treat the stranger encounter. You know, in many ways, this issue is at the very heart of what's in the news. You know, all of the scandals that have surrounded Harvey Weinstein and now the director's out and Bill Cosby a while back. And I was watching a talk show and I found it interesting that a couple of the men were saying, you know, I used to think I don't understand women. Now I don't realize I don't understand other men. Because they were saying, you know, this is always a power thing. And I think that's an easy out. This is having power over the women and I think that's part of it. But I think that's rarer. And I think we like to say it's that because then when we go, eh, that doesn't resonate with me. I must not be part of the problem. It lets a lot of us off the hook. It's not just about power. It's about the privilege to say, I will interpret my actions for both of us. If I give myself the freedom to do this to put you at ease, then you should be put at ease. It has much more to do with the pernicious sense of I am privileged and I will interpret these encounters. And that happens all over the place. And that can happen across genders. Most of us have at least one stray aunt in the family who sees you and grabs you and hugs you whether you want it or not. Interesting things happen when we decide I will get to interpret our encounter. If I need something, I will need it and you will understand. If I decide that this is just a fun gesture, you will interpret it that way. We're so unaware of the privilege and it comes from 2,000 years of in many ways our God image controlled by the privileged. The minute we start talking, the minute religion took that turn around Puritan England time when rather than helping the poor, it became sort of the temperance league thing where we would get dressed up in our Sunday finery and we would march against the poor in that their morals, their morals are not decent. They're being impertinent. And that became the religious stance. Make no doubt what we were doing is we were wresting God from the poor and getting him back to the palaces where he belonged. And we can't do that. God, we hear, still dwells in the poor. And that's a tough message for our country because very few of us can truly put ourselves with the kind of poor that lived in Jesus' time. So where does that leave us? Well, it doesn't leave us cut off from God. It invites us into the different aspect, which is if you're not among the very poor of God, then you have a chance to be one with God by being the liberator. That's your other chance. If you are among the well-fed and among the well-clothed, then your job is to reach out and lift up those who aren't. That's how we participate in divinity, you know. And it's a tough message because we've kind of been taught that this gospel of prosperity stuff where, you know, God has blessed my life. I mean, it says right there in the Beatitudes, you know, blessed are those with a bigger house. It's the gospel according to Shlomo or something. I don't know who that belongs to, you know. But we kind of feel, I've been blessed. And we get this, you know, we're fascinated. As Catholics, we're fascinated with Mother Teresa. I know people who knew Mother Teresa personally, and they'll tell you, you know what? She wasn't a sweet woman. I mean, we all picture, we picture that face and the smile, and they're like, she was difficult. She was difficult. But she was determined to lift up the poor. And I think we like to see that as what a sweet sort of passive presence in the world. No, no, she was a revolutionary. She was going to change things. You know, her theology is not, take the theology we have, throw in minorities and mix. No, no, something much more revolutionary. Encounter the God who starts with the poor. When privilege took over religion, we moved, and this was about the time that Jesus is fighting against this, but we moved to suppress all of, some of them were pagan religions with high goddesses, and some were gods and all. But we suppressed a lot of the earth god, earth goddess images for the sky god. We climbed the mountain to encounter God. We got away from the lowly. God was to be found in the stratosphere, no longer down here in the dirt. And it's so ingrained in us, you know, that we are there to elevate, rather, no, we're there to get down and be grounded with the rest of the world. We're to encounter God, you know, coming out of the atmosphere from all angles, but we are to be a people who really recognize that there's an encounter with God that we sometimes miss when we live too much from an expectation of privilege. The Catholic writer Brian Massengale was giving a talk, and he was talking about that there is a resentment, now this is in African-American spirituality, and he said there's a little bit of a resentment sometimes, you know, when someone will say, well, you know, you don't understand what it is to be the descendants of slaves. And he said, you know, the resentment is people will look at him and say, you know, that's generations ago, it's not you, get over it. And when will you stop acting as though you're still a slave? And his answer is, when you stop acting like you're still a landowner. The structures are still in place. I work hard for everything I get. No, I work hard and started from a place of privilege, and that's why I have what I have. And that's so hard for us to really get a grasp of when we encounter someone, how often we just assume that I can interpret the situation, I can decide what's offensive, I can decide what's not. That is a place that most of the world doesn't get to live at. And we don't realize that. And so God calls us to really step back and encounter the God of the poor. But to do it, we have to get rid of our idols. We still struggle so much with the first commandment. No idols before God. Most of our Christianity is all idols because the image of God can change too quickly. It's too big, we can't grasp it. We have to choose smaller things. And it's okay. You'll always have to choose something smaller than God. You can't reflect on the whole. Just don't get stuck on one thing. You get stuck on one thing, it becomes an idol. I would say, and this almost, I've had people when I say this, I really, they are ready to kill me. But I've been silent for five days, if I have to die now, this is a good time. And that is, in America, our greatest idol that we worship instead of God is Scripture. We don't look for God anywhere else. Someone says, this person's hurting, what should we do? Check the Scripture. It's not the only access to God. God is bigger than Scripture. That's fundamentalism. Why are you guys doing that? Where does it say in the Bible that this building should be this shape? Same place it says we have air conditioning, get over it. It's not an idol. It's a help. And when we make things our idol, every part of our God image gets stuck in that. And then it becomes simply ours. But the God who calls us into communion with the whole world will always ask us, start with those who do not know privilege. Start with those whose lives are so uncertain. So uncertain. It's fascinating, we want to be one with Jesus, but we forget, we talk about the cross, we talk about everything else, we forget the Christmas coming up. We forget that the whole Jesus event starts as the loftiest God in the world coming down light years to be with us. The journey from God to humanity is a larger journey than we will ever be asked to make, going from privilege to those in need. But at least it's an accompanying journey with Jesus. And so we ask God to make us a people today who are open to new images of God, who are constantly seeking where God is in a new situation, that we don't fall back on, well, this is what I was taught, and I'm right. There's a, I can't remember the theologian, comes out of the Mujeres theology that says, God exists in every part of you but your arrogance. It's only in our arrogance that God doesn't exist. And can you imagine, can you imagine being God for a minute, speaking of arrogance? But imagine being God and looking down on the average one of us who thinks we know it all. Only in our arrogance can God not exist, and only when we reach out to people we've yet to encounter, people we've yet to understand, people we've yet to allow to lead us, only then can our vision of God grow. Only then can we start to pursue the living God, the God who is not stagnant, the God who can bring us all to a new heaven and a new earth, not refurbished, but something new for the human heart.", WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.000 The Lord be with you. 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:02.000 And with your spirit. 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:05.000 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:08.000 Glory to you, O Lord. 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:11.000 When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, 00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:14.000 they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:16.000 tested him by asking, 00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:20.000 Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:21.000 Jesus said to him, 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:24.000 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:26.000 with all your soul, and with all your mind. 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:29.000 This is the greatest and first commandment. 00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:31.000 The second is like it. 00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:34.000 You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:39.000 The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments. 00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:42.000 The Gospel of the Lord. 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:45.000 Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 00:00:53.000 --> 00:00:56.000 So as many of you may know, I mentioned last week, 00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:01.000 I went on a five-day silent retreat. 00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:02.000 So get comfortable. 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:06.000 I have some talking to make up for. 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:09.000 Not talked in a while. 00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:14.000 But I always bring a book. 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:17.000 And I thought, you know, I should, I confess, 00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:22.000 most of the theology I read in the last several years 00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:25.000 falls in what I would call 00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:28.000 the marginalized categories of theology. 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:30.000 Once in a while, I read about dialogues with 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:36.000 kind of smaller, obscure, almost run-over religions. 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:37.000 Not our own. 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:38.000 But in our own faith, 00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:43.000 and I tend to gravitate towards feminist theology, 00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:47.000 liberation theology, Mujeres theology, Latino theology, 00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:51.000 and a friend of mine who saw what I was reading 00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:52.000 before the retreat started, 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:54.000 we got like a social hour that was like, 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:56.000 catch up and then shut up. 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:59.000 And, but he said, you know, 00:01:59.000 --> 00:02:01.000 it's probably really good that you do that 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:02.000 because you have to reach out 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:05.000 and you have to understand so many people. 00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:07.000 And I said to him, you know, you have to understand, 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:12.000 I don't read these theologies to be more effective 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:16.000 or to see it from this person's point of view. 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:18.000 I mean, those are all good things. 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:20.000 The reason I read them is because 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:25.000 the images of God that have been produced 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:28.000 by privilege, 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:30.000 by those who are well-housed and well-clothed 00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:32.000 and well, you know, fed 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:35.000 in the palaces of Europe for 2,000 years, 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:39.000 those images of God don't feed me. 00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:43.000 The images of God that are stuck in authority 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.000 and keeping people in their place 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:50.000 are so distant from the God of Jesus Christ 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:54.000 that we have to sometimes get beyond 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:57.000 the theology of the majority 00:02:57.000 --> 00:03:01.000 to find the God of the poor. 00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:03.000 We can't get there any other way. 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:05.000 And so you start to read these theologies 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:07.000 and it's interesting how we look at things 00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:10.000 that we can see from the majority perspective 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:13.000 and we've kind of put our own interpretation on it. 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:15.000 I think it is the greatest sin 00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:17.000 of being in the privileged class 00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:19.000 that you feel you have a right 00:03:19.000 --> 00:03:22.000 to interpret everyone else's life. 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:25.000 So we'll go in and we'll see 00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:27.000 pictures of Hispanic Catholicism 00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:29.000 and we'll see houses that have 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:31.000 little statues of Mary and things 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:33.000 and we'll think, how folkloric. 00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:35.000 Rather than really understanding 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:37.000 that in a theology that grew up 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:40.000 where they were not as, you know, 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:42.000 they didn't have as many priests 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:44.000 so they became less priest-dependent 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:48.000 that the church often happened at home. 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:50.000 And when there were no priests around, 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:52.000 Abuela gave the blessings 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:55.000 and said the prayers and cried for the children. 00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:57.000 And they don't have, 00:03:57.000 --> 00:03:59.000 they will never have quite the 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:01.000 we come here for our sacred space 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:03.000 that other cultures have. 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:06.000 It will always bleed into the public life 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:08.000 and their public life will come back to church 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:09.000 and that's why, you know, everyone says, 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:11.000 well why do they do quinceaneras at church? 00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:13.000 Because they don't have the strong wall 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:15.000 between this space and the rest of the world 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:19.000 that we developed in a world of structure, 00:04:19.000 --> 00:04:21.000 in a world of authority 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:23.000 and who's in charge, that's a different culture. 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:25.000 And so you find God in these different cultures 00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:29.000 and you can slowly struggle with the living God. 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:30.000 The God that we hear today, 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:32.000 the God who says, you know, you have to, 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:37.000 you are measured by how you treat the stranger. 00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:39.000 Not how you treat the people 00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:41.000 that are important to you and that can do back for you. 00:04:41.000 --> 00:04:47.000 How you treat the stranger encounter. 00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:49.000 You know, in many ways, 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:52.000 this issue is at the very heart 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:54.000 of what's in the news. 00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:56.000 You know, all of the scandals 00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:59.000 that have surrounded Harvey Weinstein 00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:00.000 and now the director's out 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:02.000 and Bill Cosby a while back. 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:04.000 And I was watching a talk show 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:06.000 and I found it interesting 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:08.000 that a couple of the men were saying, 00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:10.000 you know, I used to think I don't understand women. 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:13.000 Now I don't realize I don't understand other men. 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:15.000 Because they were saying, you know, 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:17.000 this is always a power thing. 00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:19.000 And I think that's an easy out. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:22.000 This is having power over the women 00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:23.000 and I think that's part of it. 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:25.000 But I think that's rarer. 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:27.000 And I think we like to say it's that 00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:29.000 because then when we go, 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:31.000 eh, that doesn't resonate with me. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:33.000 I must not be part of the problem. 00:05:33.000 --> 00:05:35.000 It lets a lot of us off the hook. 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:36.000 It's not just about power. 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:38.000 It's about the privilege to say, 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:42.000 I will interpret my actions for both of us. 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:45.000 If I give myself the freedom to do this 00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:46.000 to put you at ease, 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:48.000 then you should be put at ease. 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:52.000 It has much more to do with the pernicious sense 00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:54.000 of I am privileged 00:05:54.000 --> 00:05:56.000 and I will interpret these encounters. 00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:58.000 And that happens all over the place. 00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:00.000 And that can happen across genders. 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:04.000 Most of us have at least one stray aunt in the family 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:07.000 who sees you and grabs you and hugs you 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:09.000 whether you want it or not. 00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:14.000 Interesting things happen when we decide 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:17.000 I will get to interpret our encounter. 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:19.000 If I need something, 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:21.000 I will need it and you will understand. 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:24.000 If I decide that this is just a fun gesture, 00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:26.000 you will interpret it that way. 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:29.000 We're so unaware of the privilege 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:32.000 and it comes from 2,000 years 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:35.000 of in many ways our God image 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:38.000 controlled by the privileged. 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:40.000 The minute we start talking, 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:42.000 the minute religion took that turn 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:44.000 around Puritan England time 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:47.000 when rather than helping the poor, 00:06:47.000 --> 00:06:50.000 it became sort of the temperance league thing 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:53.000 where we would get dressed up in our Sunday finery 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:55.000 and we would march against the poor 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:56.000 in that their morals, 00:06:56.000 --> 00:06:58.000 their morals are not decent. 00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:00.000 They're being impertinent. 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:02.000 And that became the religious stance. 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:04.000 Make no doubt what we were doing 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:06.000 is we were wresting God from the poor 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:09.000 and getting him back to the palaces where he belonged. 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:13.000 And we can't do that. 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:16.000 God, we hear, still dwells in the poor. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:19.000 And that's a tough message for our country 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:22.000 because very few of us can truly put ourselves 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:25.000 with the kind of poor that lived in Jesus' time. 00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:26.000 So where does that leave us? 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:29.000 Well, it doesn't leave us cut off from God. 00:07:29.000 --> 00:07:32.000 It invites us into the different aspect, 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:36.000 which is if you're not among the very poor of God, 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:38.000 then you have a chance to be one with God 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:40.000 by being the liberator. 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:43.000 That's your other chance. 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:45.000 If you are among the well-fed 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:47.000 and among the well-clothed, 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:49.000 then your job is to reach out 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:51.000 and lift up those who aren't. 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:57.000 That's how we participate in divinity, you know. 00:07:57.000 --> 00:07:59.000 And it's a tough message 00:07:59.000 --> 00:08:01.000 because we've kind of been taught 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:03.000 that this gospel of prosperity stuff 00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:08.000 where, you know, God has blessed my life. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:11.000 I mean, it says right there in the Beatitudes, 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:14.000 you know, blessed are those with a bigger house. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:19.000 It's the gospel according to Shlomo or something. 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:22.000 I don't know who that belongs to, you know. 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:25.000 But we kind of feel, I've been blessed. 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:28.000 And we get this, you know, we're fascinated. 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:32.000 As Catholics, we're fascinated with Mother Teresa. 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:34.000 I know people who knew Mother Teresa personally, 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:36.000 and they'll tell you, you know what? 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:39.000 She wasn't a sweet woman. 00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:42.000 I mean, we all picture, we picture that face 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:44.000 and the smile, and they're like, 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:47.000 she was difficult. 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:49.000 She was difficult. 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:53.000 But she was determined to lift up the poor. 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:57.000 And I think we like to see that as 00:08:57.000 --> 00:09:01.000 what a sweet sort of passive presence in the world. 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:04.000 No, no, she was a revolutionary. 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:07.000 She was going to change things. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:10.000 You know, her theology is not, 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:12.000 take the theology we have, 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:15.000 throw in minorities and mix. 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:19.000 No, no, something much more revolutionary. 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:23.000 Encounter the God who starts with the poor. 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:28.000 When privilege took over religion, 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:30.000 we moved, and this was about the time 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:32.000 that Jesus is fighting against this, 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:35.000 but we moved to suppress all of, 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:38.000 some of them were pagan religions with high goddesses, 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:40.000 and some were gods and all. 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:43.000 But we suppressed a lot of the earth god, 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:48.000 earth goddess images for the sky god. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:51.000 We climbed the mountain to encounter God. 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:54.000 We got away from the lowly. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:56.000 God was to be found in the stratosphere, 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:59.000 no longer down here in the dirt. 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:02.000 And it's so ingrained in us, 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:04.000 you know, that we are there to elevate, 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:06.000 rather, no, we're there to get down 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:09.000 and be grounded with the rest of the world. 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:12.000 We're to encounter God, 00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:15.000 you know, coming out of the atmosphere from all angles, 00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:20.000 but we are to be a people who really recognize 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:23.000 that there's an encounter with God 00:10:23.000 --> 00:10:28.000 that we sometimes miss when we live too much 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:31.000 from an expectation of privilege. 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:35.000 The Catholic writer Brian Massengale 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:39.000 was giving a talk, and he was talking about 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:42.000 that there is a resentment, 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:45.000 now this is in African-American spirituality, 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:47.000 and he said there's a little bit of a resentment sometimes, 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:49.000 you know, when someone will say, 00:10:49.000 --> 00:10:51.000 well, you know, you don't understand what it is 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:53.000 to be the descendants of slaves. 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:54.000 And he said, you know, the resentment is 00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:55.000 people will look at him and say, 00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:57.000 you know, that's generations ago, 00:10:57.000 --> 00:11:00.000 it's not you, get over it. 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:03.000 And when will you stop acting as though 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:04.000 you're still a slave? 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:06.000 And his answer is, when you stop acting 00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:11.000 like you're still a landowner. 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:15.000 The structures are still in place. 00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:17.000 I work hard for everything I get. 00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:19.000 No, I work hard and started from a place of privilege, 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:22.000 and that's why I have what I have. 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:26.000 And that's so hard for us to really get a grasp of 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:28.000 when we encounter someone, 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:32.000 how often we just assume that 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:34.000 I can interpret the situation, 00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:36.000 I can decide what's offensive, 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:38.000 I can decide what's not. 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:40.000 That is a place that most of the world 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:42.000 doesn't get to live at. 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:44.000 And we don't realize that. 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:48.000 And so God calls us to really step back 00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:50.000 and encounter the God of the poor. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:55.000 But to do it, we have to get rid of our idols. 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:58.000 We still struggle so much with the first commandment. 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:01.000 No idols before God. 00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:04.000 Most of our Christianity is all idols 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:07.000 because the image of God can change too quickly. 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:08.000 It's too big, we can't grasp it. 00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:10.000 We have to choose smaller things. 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:12.000 And it's okay. 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:14.000 You'll always have to choose something smaller than God. 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:15.000 You can't reflect on the whole. 00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:17.000 Just don't get stuck on one thing. 00:12:17.000 --> 00:12:20.000 You get stuck on one thing, it becomes an idol. 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:23.000 I would say, and this almost, 00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:25.000 I've had people when I say this, 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:27.000 I really, they are ready to kill me. 00:12:27.000 --> 00:12:29.000 But I've been silent for five days, 00:12:29.000 --> 00:12:31.000 if I have to die now, this is a good time. 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:35.000 And that is, in America, 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:39.000 our greatest idol that we worship instead of God 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:42.000 is Scripture. 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:44.000 We don't look for God anywhere else. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:47.000 Someone says, this person's hurting, what should we do? 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:49.000 Check the Scripture. 00:12:49.000 --> 00:12:51.000 It's not the only access to God. 00:12:51.000 --> 00:12:53.000 God is bigger than Scripture. 00:12:53.000 --> 00:12:55.000 That's fundamentalism. 00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:57.000 Why are you guys doing that? 00:12:57.000 --> 00:12:59.000 Where does it say in the Bible 00:12:59.000 --> 00:13:01.000 that this building should be this shape? 00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:04.000 Same place it says we have air conditioning, get over it. 00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:07.000 It's not an idol. 00:13:07.000 --> 00:13:09.000 It's a help. 00:13:09.000 --> 00:13:12.000 And when we make things our idol, 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:15.000 every part of our God image gets stuck in that. 00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:18.000 And then it becomes simply ours. 00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:21.000 But the God who calls us into communion with the whole world 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:23.000 will always ask us, 00:13:23.000 --> 00:13:27.000 start with those who do not know privilege. 00:13:27.000 --> 00:13:33.000 Start with those whose lives are so uncertain. 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:36.000 So uncertain. 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:39.000 It's fascinating, we want to be one with Jesus, 00:13:39.000 --> 00:13:41.000 but we forget, we talk about the cross, 00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:42.000 we talk about everything else, 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.000 we forget the Christmas coming up. 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:48.000 We forget that the whole Jesus event starts 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:51.000 as the loftiest God in the world 00:13:51.000 --> 00:13:56.000 coming down light years to be with us. 00:13:56.000 --> 00:13:58.000 The journey from God to humanity 00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:02.000 is a larger journey than we will ever be asked to make, 00:14:02.000 --> 00:14:05.000 going from privilege to those in need. 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:09.000 But at least it's an accompanying journey with Jesus. 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:12.000 And so we ask God to make us a people today 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:15.000 who are open to new images of God, 00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:19.000 who are constantly seeking where God is in a new situation, 00:14:19.000 --> 00:14:23.000 that we don't fall back on, well, this is what I was taught, 00:14:23.000 --> 00:14:26.000 and I'm right. 00:14:26.000 --> 00:14:29.000 There's a, I can't remember the theologian, 00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:32.000 comes out of the Mujeres theology that says, 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:37.000 God exists in every part of you but your arrogance. 00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:41.000 It's only in our arrogance that God doesn't exist. 00:14:41.000 --> 00:14:43.000 And can you imagine, 00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:45.000 can you imagine being God for a minute, 00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:48.000 speaking of arrogance? 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:51.000 But imagine being God and looking down 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:57.000 on the average one of us who thinks we know it all. 00:14:57.000 --> 00:15:00.000 Only in our arrogance can God not exist, 00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:05.000 and only when we reach out to people we've yet to encounter, 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:07.000 people we've yet to understand, 00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:10.000 people we've yet to allow to lead us, 00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:12.000 only then can our vision of God grow. 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:16.000 Only then can we start to pursue the living God, 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:18.000 the God who is not stagnant, 00:15:18.000 --> 00:15:23.000 the God who can bring us all to a new heaven and a new earth, 00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:29.000 not refurbished, but something new for the human heart.

Father Pat’s message is a powerful call to abandon static and privileged images of God in favor of a dynamic and liberating encounter with the divine found among the poor, the marginalized, and the oppressed. Drawing from his own spiritual journey and theological reading, he challenges us to recognize how privilege distorts our understanding of God, religion, and morality. He insists that love of God and neighbor—especially the neighbor who is different, excluded, or silenced—is the heart of our faith. This love demands humility, openness to transformation, and a willingness to dismantle idols—whether of Scripture, tradition, or comfort—that hinder our relationship with the living God. Father Pat begins by reflecting on his silent retreat, where he immersed himself in theologies from the margins—feminist, liberation, Latino, and Mujeres theologies—not out of academic curiosity or pastoral obligation, but because traditional images of God shaped by centuries of European privilege no longer nourish his soul. He emphasizes that theology shaped by authority and hierarchy often distances us from the God revealed in Jesus Christ, who consistently sided with the poor, the outcast, and the stranger. In contrast, theologies emerging from oppressed communities bring us into contact with a God who liberates, suffers, and dwells among those who have been silenced. He critiques the tendency of the privileged to interpret the lives and faith of others through their own lens, often reducing vibrant, contextual spiritualities to “folklore” or misunderstanding them entirely. Using examples from Hispanic Catholicism, he draws attention to how faith can flourish in the home and community when institutional structures are absent, revealing a sacredness that transcends traditional boundaries between church and daily life. This, he argues, is a vital insight into how God is encountered in real, lived experience, not just in formal doctrine or ritual. Father Pat then connects this theological reflection to broader societal issues, such as the abuse scandals involving powerful men. He identifies a deeper issue than mere power: the entitlement of the privileged to define and interpret reality for others. This entitlement, he explains, is rooted in centuries of privilege and is perpetuated when we fail to examine how deeply it shapes our behavior, assumptions, and even our spirituality. The problem is not just individual sin, but systemic privilege that allows some to dictate meaning and morality while silencing others. He laments the historical shift in Christianity—from a faith of the poor to a moralizing institution aligned with power and control. This shift, he argues, was a theft of God from the poor, replacing the incarnate, liberating God of Jesus with a sterile, distant deity of the elite. Yet the Gospel still calls us to encounter God among the poor and to become liberators ourselves if we are not among the poor. This is the path by which the privileged can participate in the divine life: by using their position to uplift others rather than consolidate their own comfort. Father Pat challenges the modern idolization of Scripture, asserting that while Scripture is sacred, it is not God itself. He warns that when we make any one thing—especially something as limited by human interpretation as the Bible—into a fixed and total image of God, we fall into idolatry. True Christian faith is not about clinging to certainties but about seeking God in new and unfamiliar places, especially in the voices and lives of those who have been historically excluded. He touches on the enduring structures of racial and social privilege, quoting theologian Bryan Massingale to illustrate how the legacy of slavery and landownership continues to shape attitudes and systems today. Recognizing this truth confronts the lie of meritocracy and invites a deeper humility in how we engage with others’ experiences. Only by relinquishing the need to control or interpret others’ realities can we begin to cultivate genuine solidarity and open ourselves to the transforming presence of God. Ultimately, Father Pat urges us to be open to new images of God, to let go of arrogance, and to listen to those who have been silenced or overlooked. He reminds us that Jesus’ life began with the greatest act of divine humility: the Incarnation. God’s descent into human vulnerability should inspire us to make our own descent from privilege into solidarity. Only in doing so can we begin to see God as God truly is—not confined to our expectations or traditions, but alive in the struggles, hopes, and dignity of every human being. In sum, Father Pat’s message is a profound spiritual challenge: to love God with our whole being and to love our neighbor—not from on high, but from the ground, where God still dwells, among the poor, the broken, and the unknown. To find God, we must be willing to be changed.
