Jesus said to his disciples, to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well. And from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount. But rather love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back, then your reward would be great, and you will be children of the most high. For he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful just as your father is merciful. Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you. A good measure packed together, shaken down and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. This may well be the most difficult gospel passage in all the gospel, and it sounds so pretty that it's easy not to notice how difficult it is. And even it can lead us into some very dark places if we don't understand the social context of it. You know, Jesus through this whole thing is saying, look, you cannot give up on wanting people to become the best they can, on wanting them to do well in the world, in wanting them to not suffer. You cannot give up on that. Where it will sound like it goes too far because he's writing to an oppressed people in an occupied country who are also surviving, we get some very weird phrases. And one of the phrases that we love to throw out there often enough, because we tend to, in our mind, severely limit what it means, rather than really facing that it says some things that are not healthy if we take it too literally. And it is, turn the other cheek. Where that become, why would that be problematic? I will tell you, I love the gospel. Never will a woman come to me who's in an abusive relationship and I will tell her to turn the other cheek. Never. Because it's not out of interest for the other person anyway. I mean, who are we kidding? Are we doing someone a favor to not only allow, but even through our tacit behavior, nurture an abuser? Do we not create abusive people when we create systems that say, the more abusive you are, the more power you get? It's not a moral, it's not a moral decision. Now, in a moment of heated anger, and someone swings and, you know, you pick up the heaviest object you can and go back at them, this is what Jesus is talking about. We understand that. But as a lifestyle to say, listen, if there are bullies here in the crowd, let's make sure they know they can do well. That's not a positive message. It's not a moral message. It doesn't sit well, and we know. We talk so much about Thomas Aquinas and the church and his natural law. And you'll know morality because it will resonate. And that doesn't resonate. Even more so, you know, would we, if we saw someone beating up our child, would we run in and grab the child and turn their other cheek? And say, well, that's the Christian thing to do? No, why? Because what we're doing is tacitly teaching people to be abusive. This, and the reason I go after this so hard, this scripture was used, if you start to hear the inner stories, this scripture was used more than any other to hide up abuse in the church. Someone was ready to go to the police and they would be pulled aside by some church things and say, you know, we need to turn the other cheek. This can be a dangerous passage. And so instead, we are called to be a people who understand that we can approach something with Christian love, not human love. Human love is a very romantic or a very, you know, there's the love we have for children. There's the love we have for a partner in life. There's a love we have for people that has all of these emotional components. Christian love actually at some level done well has to divorce itself from the emotional. I always tell with engaged couples, you know, you probably have a tremendous amount if you're engaged of romantic love at the moment. The day you wake up five years into a marriage, look over and you're still mad about something last night, and there is no emotional love at that moment, and you choose to treat each other well without the emotion, now you're starting to move into Christian love. Christian love says, my inner emotions will not dictate how you are treated. We treat people based on who we are called to be in the world, not on how they make us feel. And if, though I think someone who's in an abusive relationship, it's a very tough position for them to be in, they're not always thinking straight, but if you could remove all of that and they were absolutely thinking straight, they would still know this is not good for either of us. Staying in an abusive relationship has never done anything for the abuser, except help them to become a worse person. And what's the end game? Well, you know, we don't like to admit it, but the end game is, it's not my problem, eventually they'll face God and there'll be an eternal hell. Out of love, I'm gonna lead them down that, no. When we go, this is toxic for both of us, this has to go away for both of us. And granted you're doing it sometimes out of survival instinct, but we can get tied into this very weird sort of, I know it's not good for them, I know it's not good for me, but I have to do this suffering. Suffering that only creates more suffering in the world is not Christian suffering. Jesus didn't suffer on the cross so that we could all suffer. Suffering that is redemptive creates a better world. And so sometimes the suffering is to leave the comfort of a relationship that while abusive is familiar. And sometimes we will choose familiar misery over what is unknown. It's more frightening, but it's a frightening for a moment that you can get past. Rather than we're gonna continue this. And so it's a very tough gospel and we like, oh, we love to throw these phrases out like they're so lovely. This is some of the hardest teaching because we are called actually to correct situations while we are still emotionally enough in control, not to want the other person's downfall. In our own country, we can always apply these things politically. Whichever side of the fence you're on, if you're on the right, assume I'm talking about Kamala and Joe and Hillary. If you're on the left, assume I'm talking about Donald and Stephen Miller and then Steve Bannon. If God gave you a little potion and said, here, this one will kill them and get them out of your hair forever. This one will turn that into wonderful people who can help the world and they'll be loved by anyone and everyone. There are some people who would struggle with the, I don't want them to become a hero. I'm already invested in them being a villain. To get past the revenge and say, if I could give them something that would make them fight for the good, I'd have to go with that. And not to think about it for a minute. But many people are like, no, nope, I'm sorry. They need to be punished. Punishment is the realm of Lucifer. Let him have it. That's what we like about the devil. We don't like to admit it. We like the devil because he's going to get those people that have become of us until it's my turn. And I'm hubby for God. It's that idea that we, that mercy, mercy is wanting people to do the best they can in life. And so that kind of compassion that says, listen, I've got to be, this relationship is abusive. This person is abusive. You know, I've always said if I'm, and some people have these issues, I've had them in my own family. If you've got an addict that is stealing money, you can want the best for them. You can try and get them help. Stop leaving money laying around the place. Tote, you know, we call it enabling. And enabling is not a Christian virtue. And when someone who's struggling with addiction asks for a drink, we tell ourselves, look, I've got to be compassionate. I'll give them a drink. No, you need to be perceived as compassionate while you're planning their downfall without meaning to. Sometimes, sometimes the hardest thing we do is to do things that won't feel like the warm, fuzzy end of love. Because we love people enough to say that's harming you. And so we ask God, make us a people who can love our enemies. You'll notice he never says, support the agenda of your enemies. Because if you could support the agenda of your enemies, they're not your enemies. He said, there will be people opposed to you. There will be adversaries. There will be opponents. You can absolutely want the best for a person and say, but I have to fight against what they stand for. It's a really tough gospel. And I think we'd have to allow ourselves the critical thought as we go through this gospel to realize that sometimes our emotions are not going to get us where we need to be.
