Jesus came down with the twelve and stood on a stretch of level ground with a great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Zee and raising his eyes toward his disciples he said, Blessed are you who are poor for the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and insult you and denounce your name is evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice on that day for your reward will be great in heaven for their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. But woe to you who are rich for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are fulfilled who are filled now for you will be hungry. Woe to you who will laugh now for you will grieve and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way. The Gospel of the Lord. I'm going to, I always say this, but I'm actually going to be brief today. I'm feeling horrible. Friday afternoon I had my second shingle shot. That was the reaction I got at the last NewsHour. It's been like, it's been like a review the greatest health hits of 2024. It's like every injury, every hurt I've had is the swelling comes back everywhere that you've had anything. And even places where I didn't know I had anything. But, you know, I know I'm gonna get past it so I know it's not, I'm not worried about it. And, you know, people keep coming up saying it's better than getting shingles. It's better than getting stuck in the eye with a stick. But, cold comfort. Last Mass I was so out of it. I got up to the Gospel. I said, the Lord be with me. One person said it also with us, which would have been tremendous. So this Gospel of the Sermon and Luke's, we don't even hear the praise, but Luke's is called the Sermon on the Plain. It's the same sermon, but Luke, where Matthew says Jesus leads them up onto a mountain and they all sit on the mountain. And you can just picture Jesus up there and he's preaching to them. Luke says Jesus comes down the mountain and gets them all on a level playing field and preaches. Because this is Luke's, this is his opening volley of what's going to be the thesis of his whole Gospel. It's what we call the Lucanian version. And it's, he hits on in the Magnificat, but you have to remember the Magnificat, even though when you and I open the Gospel we read it first. The Nativity narrative was written almost a generation later. This was closer to the original opening. And he says, you know, the mighty will be brought down from their thrones and the lowly will be lifted up. And here you have him, blessed are you who are poor and blessed, you know, are you who are hungry. And then unlike Matthew, he goes after the, and woe to you who are rich and woe to you who are filled. And it's not, it's not a reward-punishment thing going on. It's an understanding of the nature of heaven and the nature of justice. I suppose in modern terms we would say, woe to you who live above the median level of humanity. For when justice comes, it will feel like a downgrade. And blessed are you who are living below that medium, because when justice comes, it will feel like an upgrade. This is the entire Lukan Gospel, is this idea that we, we tend to, you know, the idea is that in the end of time as we move into heaven, we start to experience one another's humanity, which is why we should go out of our way to alleviate any suffering we can with anyone. When someone's suffering, if you're Christian, you respond. If you're smart, you respond. You don't even have to be Christian. When someone is suffering, you know, we've been, we've been trained out of that. You know, when a four-year-old's mother is crying, I've never heard a four-year-old say, get over it. Be entertaining, but never seen it. Kids, when someone's really crying and suffering, they are disturbed by it, and we have to learn to not be disturbed. It is the great elephant in the corner of Christianity that no one likes to talk about, because it's in the middle of our theology, and it's the ugliest part of our theology, and it's so ubiquitous, we don't notice it's there. It's just everywhere. And that is, the goal of our Christianity is to get to heaven. And once you're in heaven, it won't bother you that there are people suffering in hell. You'll be eternally happy. And I've heard different ways around that. I've heard, well, you know, I was taught that when you get to heaven, that that knowledge of hell is taken from you. Oh, so you don't have to know their suffering. That's just not much better, is it? It's almost as though we should harden ourselves to suffering now, because otherwise, you know, those people in hell will get in the way of our suffering. You know, one of my favorite birthday cards, because even though I preach against it, I am a great fan of dark humor, and that is, my favorite birthday card ever had a picture of Marie Antoinette on the front. And it says, well, and then I said something about, let's all have some cake, and everyone got all vissy. Never party with peasants, they ruin everything. I mean, you sort of could see the, it's sort of, where do we live? Where do we live? Several years ago, I was, I was at, in line in a McDonald's, because I'm a health food fanatic, and this man in front of me, I used to tell the story, older white guy, now I say, white guy about my age, and he's ordering, and he's not trying to be condescending, but oh, this young teens to 20s girl is taking, you know, his order, and he calls her sweetie about three times during the conversation, and not punching it up or anything, almost as subtly as she could, she hands him his bag at the end, and goes, here's your food, sweetie, and he almost went over the counter, and that was disrespectful. You know, the idea that if you, I don't care what your position is, and I'm your pastor, I deserve exactly the respect I show you, no more, no less. I think when we get into, well, you know, I'm a person, I'm a person that deserves respect, you know, because of something I did years and years and years ago. I'm already in a position, I can treat you anyway I want, I should get respect back. That is the, that is the ugliest path to go down, that we deserve the respect we show people, that we start to move into what would, what would the justice of God, the equality of heaven look like? Who are the people in our lives? Who are the people in our society? Who are the people around our world whose suffering we've learned not to see, because it would disturb us in our comfort? You know, it's always there, and and there are people who talk their way out of it by saying, well, you know, I mean, a lot of those people made bad choices, and a lot of the, you can lean into that, but know the truth. Everyone in this room, there are people who have worked harder than every one of us, worked more diligently their whole life than every one of us, and will never have a fraction of what we are. You don't look like, you don't look at a child in Sierra Leone who's in the diamond mines working since the age of five, and say, well, you should have stayed in school. Pretty much where we go a lot of the time. Well, they should have, they should have, they should have. You have no idea what your story is, and we're too comfortable never knowing the story. It's why people, I always hear these people say, you know, I, I like dogs more than people. Well, of course you do. You don't expect anything, you don't expect anything of them. You know, if your spouse stayed home all day, looked excited when you came in the door, and waited for you to feed them, and then you would follow up after then and clean up their you-know-what, you would find that untenable. But with a dog, you just don't have any expectations, and because the dog doesn't talk back, you can stay with the rough draft that I always talk about and never fill in the details. My dog loves me. I know, I know because they wag their tail. Okay. But we, we get to fill in. I would just love, if I could have one miracle, I want everyone's dog to be able to talk to them for just one day. Okay. You know, we kind of do that, but we don't, you know, we, we, well, so comfortable with that inequality. Relationships based in equality are harder, and we shouldn't say to ourselves, I like, I like a dog or a cat, I like animals better than people. We like the inequality, we're in charge. Even though they don't know we're in charge, you know, I've never, you know, you, you can go on vacation even if you have to put them in daycare. And, and when we're in a relationship with one another, we have to decide whether we're going to have justice or not. And that's harder. The relationship's harder, and that's, we don't, we don't like the same. I like relationships with animals better than relationships with people, because people are hard. You know, the relationships are. They will expect more back from us, and we will expect more from them, and they will disappoint us. You know, when was the last time your dog disappointed you? And granted, that's nice. And if your dog does disappoint you, you've got the worst life I can imagine. But my dog disappoints me. So what do you do when we see a world where some people will always suffer? Do we work to change that world? When, when we get to that great flow of humanity moving into heaven, and we start to experience the lives of others, will our life have created more suffering or more joy in the street? Will our lives have brought people up or kept them down? Will we be so busy keeping our small group happy that we let large groups fall through the cracks? Who are the people we've decided, well, they don't, they don't matter. And we can come up with a million reasons why. Well, they didn't do this right. They didn't do that. They should have stayed in school. They should have, you know. We're superimposing our history on them, and then giving them different decisions. But their history is not our history. And their struggle is not our struggle. And we ask God to make us a people who don't need to be unaware of people suffering, so that we can be happy. And we, we have to become aware of it. We have to respond to it. If, if you go through your life, all this wondered and stuff, while allowing others to suffer, justice will feel like suffering to you. I have, David Deniman used to say very bluntly, he'd say, you know, there's, there's a million ways to be above, above the median line of humanity. Some people, at least they have a sense that they're very good-looking, and that's a power in the world. And some people are wealthy, and that's a power in the world. And some people are smart, and that's a power in the world. And David Deniman would always say, so if, just remember, if you're good-looking and smart, I mean, he'd say, no, he'd say, actually he was very mean about it, he'd say, if you're good-looking and dumb, you'll be smart and ugly in heaven. I mean, the journey in is to experience the humanity that we've ignored. Who are the people we ignore now? Who are the people who's suffering we ignore? We need to bond with that and start our journey to heaven today, owners.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 9.640000343322754, "text": " The Lord be with you. WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.640 The Lord be with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Jesus came 00:00:09.640 --> 00:00:13.640 down with the twelve and stood on a stretch of level ground with a great 00:00:13.640 --> 00:00:17.639 crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and 00:00:17.639 --> 00:00:23.639 Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Zee and raising his eyes toward his 00:00:23.639 --> 00:00:28.559 disciples he said, Blessed are you who are poor for the kingdom of God is yours. 00:00:28.559 --> 00:00:33.840 Blessed are you who are now hungry for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you 00:00:33.840 --> 00:00:38.840 who are now weeping for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you and 00:00:38.840 --> 00:00:43.200 when they exclude you and insult you and denounce your name is evil on account of 00:00:43.200 --> 00:00:49.759 the Son of Man. Rejoice on that day for your reward will be great in heaven for 00:00:49.759 --> 00:00:55.319 their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. But woe to you who are rich 00:00:55.319 --> 00:00:59.200 for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are fulfilled who are 00:00:59.200 --> 00:01:04.839 filled now for you will be hungry. Woe to you who will laugh now for you will 00:01:04.839 --> 00:01:09.639 grieve and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you for their ancestors 00:01:09.639 --> 00:01:17.040 treated the false prophets in this way. The Gospel of the Lord. 00:01:17.040 --> 00:01:26.720 I'm going to, I always say this, but I'm actually going to be brief today. I'm 00:01:26.720 --> 00:01:35.040 feeling horrible. Friday afternoon I had my second shingle shot. That was the 00:01:35.040 --> 00:01:40.360 reaction I got at the last NewsHour. It's been like, it's been like a review the 00:01:40.360 --> 00:01:46.839 greatest health hits of 2024. It's like every injury, every hurt I've had is the 00:01:46.959 --> 00:01:52.559 swelling comes back everywhere that you've had anything. And even places 00:01:52.559 --> 00:02:00.360 where I didn't know I had anything. But, you know, I know I'm gonna get past it 00:02:00.360 --> 00:02:05.559 so I know it's not, I'm not worried about it. And, you know, people keep coming up 00:02:05.559 --> 00:02:09.160 saying it's better than getting shingles. It's better than getting stuck in the eye 00:02:09.160 --> 00:02:18.559 with a stick. But, cold comfort. Last Mass I was so out of it. I got up to the 00:02:18.559 --> 00:02:22.559 Gospel. I said, the Lord be with me. 00:02:23.639 --> 00:02:33.600 One person said it also with us, which would have been tremendous. So this 00:02:34.160 --> 00:02:39.880 Gospel of the Sermon and Luke's, we don't even hear the praise, but Luke's is 00:02:39.880 --> 00:02:46.639 called the Sermon on the Plain. It's the same sermon, but Luke, where Matthew says 00:02:46.639 --> 00:02:52.039 Jesus leads them up onto a mountain and they all sit on the 00:02:52.039 --> 00:02:55.679 mountain. And you can just picture Jesus up there and he's preaching to them. Luke 00:02:55.679 --> 00:03:01.639 says Jesus comes down the mountain and gets them all on a level playing field 00:03:01.639 --> 00:03:08.479 and preaches. Because this is Luke's, this is his opening volley of what's 00:03:08.479 --> 00:03:12.479 going to be the thesis of his whole Gospel. It's what we call the Lucanian 00:03:12.479 --> 00:03:17.440 version. And it's, he hits on in the Magnificat, but you have to remember the 00:03:17.440 --> 00:03:21.800 Magnificat, even though when you and I open the Gospel we read it first. The 00:03:21.800 --> 00:03:26.279 Nativity narrative was written almost a generation later. This was closer to the 00:03:26.279 --> 00:03:31.880 original opening. And he says, you know, the mighty will be brought down from 00:03:31.880 --> 00:03:36.199 their thrones and the lowly will be lifted up. And here you have him, blessed 00:03:36.199 --> 00:03:41.119 are you who are poor and blessed, you know, are you who are hungry. And then 00:03:41.119 --> 00:03:45.720 unlike Matthew, he goes after the, and woe to you who are rich and woe to you who 00:03:45.720 --> 00:03:52.880 are filled. And it's not, it's not a reward-punishment thing going on. It's an 00:03:52.880 --> 00:04:00.639 understanding of the nature of heaven and the nature of justice. I suppose in 00:04:00.639 --> 00:04:07.720 modern terms we would say, woe to you who live above the median level of humanity. 00:04:07.720 --> 00:04:14.279 For when justice comes, it will feel like a downgrade. And blessed are you who are 00:04:14.279 --> 00:04:18.119 living below that medium, because when justice comes, it will feel like an 00:04:18.119 --> 00:04:27.480 upgrade. This is the entire Lukan Gospel, is this idea that we, we tend to, you know, 00:04:27.480 --> 00:04:30.519 the idea is that in the end of time as we move into heaven, we start to 00:04:30.519 --> 00:04:34.959 experience one another's humanity, which is why we should go out of our way to 00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:42.399 alleviate any suffering we can with anyone. When someone's suffering, if you're 00:04:42.399 --> 00:04:48.239 Christian, you respond. If you're smart, you respond. You don't even have to be 00:04:48.239 --> 00:04:53.359 Christian. When someone is suffering, you know, we've been, we've been trained out 00:04:53.359 --> 00:04:59.920 of that. You know, when a four-year-old's mother is crying, I've never heard a 00:04:59.920 --> 00:05:09.920 four-year-old say, get over it. Be entertaining, but never seen it. Kids, when 00:05:09.920 --> 00:05:14.440 someone's really crying and suffering, they are disturbed by it, and we have to 00:05:14.440 --> 00:05:19.720 learn to not be disturbed. It is the great elephant in the corner of 00:05:19.720 --> 00:05:23.320 Christianity that no one likes to talk about, because it's in the middle of our 00:05:23.320 --> 00:05:28.760 theology, and it's the ugliest part of our theology, and it's so ubiquitous, we 00:05:28.760 --> 00:05:35.079 don't notice it's there. It's just everywhere. And that is, the goal of our 00:05:35.079 --> 00:05:41.239 Christianity is to get to heaven. And once you're in heaven, it won't bother 00:05:41.239 --> 00:05:47.279 you that there are people suffering in hell. You'll be eternally happy. And I've 00:05:47.279 --> 00:05:51.799 heard different ways around that. I've heard, well, you know, I was taught that 00:05:51.799 --> 00:05:56.160 when you get to heaven, that that knowledge of hell is taken from you. Oh, 00:05:56.160 --> 00:06:02.559 so you don't have to know their suffering. That's just not much better, is 00:06:02.559 --> 00:06:08.839 it? It's almost as though we should harden ourselves to suffering now, because 00:06:08.839 --> 00:06:14.320 otherwise, you know, those people in hell will get in the way of our suffering. You 00:06:14.320 --> 00:06:17.559 know, one of my favorite birthday cards, because even though I preach 00:06:17.559 --> 00:06:23.239 against it, I am a great fan of dark humor, and that is, my favorite birthday 00:06:23.239 --> 00:06:29.040 card ever had a picture of Marie Antoinette on the front. And it says, 00:06:29.040 --> 00:06:33.079 well, and then I said something about, let's all have some cake, and everyone 00:06:33.079 --> 00:06:42.079 got all vissy. Never party with peasants, they ruin everything. I mean, you sort of 00:06:42.079 --> 00:06:48.720 could see the, it's sort of, where do we live? Where do we live? Several years ago, 00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:56.359 I was, I was at, in line in a McDonald's, because I'm a health food fanatic, and 00:06:56.519 --> 00:07:03.000 this man in front of me, I used to tell the story, older white guy, now I say, 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:10.720 white guy about my age, and he's ordering, and he's not 00:07:10.720 --> 00:07:18.799 trying to be condescending, but oh, this young teens to 20s girl is taking, you 00:07:18.799 --> 00:07:23.279 know, his order, and he calls her sweetie about three times during the 00:07:23.279 --> 00:07:28.920 conversation, and not punching it up or anything, almost as subtly as she could, 00:07:28.920 --> 00:07:32.720 she hands him his bag at the end, and goes, here's your food, sweetie, and he almost 00:07:32.720 --> 00:07:39.760 went over the counter, and that was disrespectful. You know, the idea that if 00:07:39.760 --> 00:07:47.559 you, I don't care what your position is, and I'm your pastor, I deserve 00:07:47.559 --> 00:07:54.559 exactly the respect I show you, no more, no less. I think when we get into, well, 00:07:54.559 --> 00:07:59.160 you know, I'm a person, I'm a person that deserves respect, you know, because of 00:07:59.160 --> 00:08:04.079 something I did years and years and years ago. I'm already in a position, I 00:08:04.079 --> 00:08:08.799 can treat you anyway I want, I should get respect back. That is the, that is the 00:08:08.799 --> 00:08:16.000 ugliest path to go down, that we deserve the respect we show people, that we start 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:21.040 to move into what would, what would the justice of God, the equality of heaven 00:08:21.040 --> 00:08:27.320 look like? Who are the people in our lives? Who are the people in our society? 00:08:27.320 --> 00:08:31.920 Who are the people around our world whose suffering we've learned not to see, 00:08:31.920 --> 00:08:38.280 because it would disturb us in our comfort? You know, it's always there, and 00:08:38.280 --> 00:08:42.840 and there are people who talk their way out of it by saying, well, you know, I mean, 00:08:42.840 --> 00:08:47.760 a lot of those people made bad choices, and a lot of the, you can lean into that, 00:08:47.760 --> 00:08:55.119 but know the truth. Everyone in this room, there are people who have worked harder 00:08:55.119 --> 00:09:00.440 than every one of us, worked more diligently their whole life than every 00:09:00.440 --> 00:09:05.599 one of us, and will never have a fraction of what we are. You don't look like, you 00:09:05.599 --> 00:09:09.559 don't look at a child in Sierra Leone who's in the diamond mines working since 00:09:09.559 --> 00:09:16.559 the age of five, and say, well, you should have stayed in school. Pretty much 00:09:16.559 --> 00:09:19.960 where we go a lot of the time. Well, they should have, they should have, they should have. 00:09:19.960 --> 00:09:24.679 You have no idea what your story is, and we're too comfortable never knowing the 00:09:24.679 --> 00:09:29.960 story. It's why people, I always hear these people say, you know, I, I like dogs 00:09:29.960 --> 00:09:36.880 more than people. Well, of course you do. You don't expect anything, you don't 00:09:36.880 --> 00:09:43.200 expect anything of them. You know, if your spouse stayed home all day, looked excited 00:09:43.200 --> 00:09:47.960 when you came in the door, and waited for you to feed them, and then you would 00:09:47.960 --> 00:09:52.919 follow up after then and clean up their you-know-what, you would find that 00:09:52.919 --> 00:09:57.919 untenable. But with a dog, you just don't have any expectations, and because the 00:09:57.919 --> 00:10:01.679 dog doesn't talk back, you can stay with the rough draft that I always talk about 00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:11.479 and never fill in the details. My dog loves me. I know, I know because they wag 00:10:11.479 --> 00:10:19.840 their tail. Okay. But we, we get to fill in. I would just love, if I could have one 00:10:19.840 --> 00:10:25.520 miracle, I want everyone's dog to be able to talk to them for just one day. Okay. 00:10:25.520 --> 00:10:31.320 You know, we kind of do that, but we don't, you know, we, we, well, so comfortable with 00:10:31.320 --> 00:10:40.080 that inequality. Relationships based in equality are harder, and we shouldn't 00:10:40.080 --> 00:10:46.239 say to ourselves, I like, I like a dog or a cat, I like animals better than people. 00:10:46.239 --> 00:10:52.840 We like the inequality, we're in charge. Even though they don't know we're in 00:10:52.840 --> 00:10:58.080 charge, you know, I've never, you know, you, you can go on vacation even if you have 00:10:58.080 --> 00:11:04.000 to put them in daycare. And, and when we're in a relationship with one another, 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:09.559 we have to decide whether we're going to have justice or not. And that's harder. 00:11:09.559 --> 00:11:14.440 The relationship's harder, and that's, we don't, we don't like the same. I like 00:11:14.440 --> 00:11:18.479 relationships with animals better than relationships with people, because people 00:11:18.479 --> 00:11:25.280 are hard. You know, the relationships are. They will expect more back from us, and 00:11:25.280 --> 00:11:30.080 we will expect more from them, and they will disappoint us. You know, when was the 00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:36.119 last time your dog disappointed you? And granted, that's nice. And if your dog 00:11:36.119 --> 00:11:40.719 does disappoint you, you've got the worst life I can imagine. But my dog 00:11:40.719 --> 00:11:47.440 disappoints me. So what do you do when we see a world where some people will 00:11:47.440 --> 00:11:54.520 always suffer? Do we work to change that world? When, when we get to that great 00:11:54.520 --> 00:12:00.520 flow of humanity moving into heaven, and we start to experience the lives of 00:12:00.520 --> 00:12:08.239 others, will our life have created more suffering or more joy in the street? Will 00:12:08.239 --> 00:12:14.919 our lives have brought people up or kept them down? Will we be so busy keeping our 00:12:14.919 --> 00:12:20.719 small group happy that we let large groups fall through the cracks? Who are 00:12:20.719 --> 00:12:24.799 the people we've decided, well, they don't, they don't matter. And we can come 00:12:24.799 --> 00:12:28.039 up with a million reasons why. Well, they didn't do this right. They didn't do that. 00:12:28.039 --> 00:12:33.919 They should have stayed in school. They should have, you know. We're superimposing 00:12:33.919 --> 00:12:39.919 our history on them, and then giving them different decisions. But their history is 00:12:39.919 --> 00:12:45.280 not our history. And their struggle is not our struggle. And we ask God to make 00:12:45.400 --> 00:12:52.280 us a people who don't need to be unaware of people suffering, so that we can be 00:12:52.280 --> 00:12:59.599 happy. And we, we have to become aware of it. We have to respond to it. If, if you go 00:12:59.599 --> 00:13:06.239 through your life, all this wondered and stuff, while allowing others to suffer, 00:13:06.239 --> 00:13:14.679 justice will feel like suffering to you. I have, David Deniman used to say very 00:13:14.679 --> 00:13:19.119 bluntly, he'd say, you know, there's, there's a million ways to be above, above 00:13:19.119 --> 00:13:25.359 the median line of humanity. Some people, at least they have a sense that they're 00:13:25.359 --> 00:13:28.280 very good-looking, and that's a power in the world. And some people are wealthy, 00:13:28.280 --> 00:13:31.640 and that's a power in the world. And some people are smart, and that's a power in 00:13:31.640 --> 00:13:35.679 the world. And David Deniman would always say, so if, just remember, if you're 00:13:35.679 --> 00:13:39.599 good-looking and smart, I mean, he'd say, no, he'd say, actually he was very mean 00:13:39.599 --> 00:13:44.440 about it, he'd say, if you're good-looking and dumb, you'll be smart and ugly in 00:13:44.440 --> 00:13:52.479 heaven. I mean, the journey in is to experience the humanity that we've 00:13:52.479 --> 00:13:58.640 ignored. Who are the people we ignore now? Who are the people who's suffering we 00:13:58.640 --> 00:14:06.880 ignore? We need to bond with that and start our journey to heaven today, owners.

Father Pat's homily is a powerful meditation on the Gospel of Luke’s Sermon on the Plain, emphasizing the radical justice of the Kingdom of God and the discomfort it brings to those who benefit from inequality. He highlights the Gospel's reversal of worldly values—where the poor, the hungry, and the grieving are called blessed, while the rich, the satisfied, and the well-regarded are warned. Father Pat challenges us to examine our complicity in systems that overlook or perpetuate suffering, urging us not to shield ourselves from the pain of others but to engage with it compassionately. He calls for a deeper awareness of the humanity we've learned to ignore, pointing to a justice that lifts up the lowly and humbles the exalted—not as punishment, but as the fulfillment of divine love and balance. In his detailed reflection, Father Pat begins by situating the Gospel reading within the broader context of Luke's theology. Unlike Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount, Luke’s “Sermon on the Plain” places Jesus on level ground with the people, symbolizing the Gospel’s core message of equality and justice. Father Pat explains that Luke’s Gospel consistently promotes a theme of reversal: the lowly are lifted, and the mighty are brought down. This isn’t about divine retribution, but about a reordering of the world in alignment with God’s justice. He paraphrases the message in modern terms: “Woe to you who live above the median line of humanity, for when justice comes, it will feel like a downgrade. Blessed are you who live below that line, for when justice comes, it will feel like an upgrade.” He emphasizes that Christianity is not about personal comfort or turning a blind eye to suffering. Rather, it demands engagement with the pain of others. He critiques the culturally accepted behavior of hardening ourselves to the suffering of others, which is often justified by blaming the victims—e.g., “They should have stayed in school,” or “They made bad choices.” Father Pat dismantles that illusion by reminding us that many people who suffer have worked harder and endured more than we ever will. Their suffering is not due to personal failure but systemic inequality. He also challenges how we assign respect and dignity in our relationships. The story of a man condescendingly calling a young woman “sweetie” at McDonald's and being offended when she uses it back illustrates the transactional and hierarchical nature of how we often treat others. Father Pat stresses that we deserve only as much respect as we give. Our relationships, he says, should be based in equality and mutual dignity—not entitlement. This applies not only to personal interactions but to societal structures as well. He critiques the common sentiment, “I like dogs better than people,” as a reflection of our desire for one-sided, uncomplicated relationships where we remain in power. Dogs, unlike people, don't challenge us, contradict us, or require us to grow. But real human relationships are difficult precisely because they involve mutual expectations and vulnerability. By preferring animals over people, we often reveal our discomfort with the messiness and demands of human equality. Father Pat then turns to the theology of heaven and hell, pointing out what he calls “the elephant in the room” of Christian doctrine: the idea that those in heaven will be perfectly happy even while others suffer in hell. He finds this deeply troubling and calls for a spirituality that is not based on ignorance of others’ pain but on full awareness and compassionate response. He suggests that our goal should be not to sanitize suffering out of our spiritual consciousness, but to allow it to shape how we live and love now. He closes with a profound challenge: When we move toward heaven, will we be ready to experience the fullness of others’ humanity? Will our lives have contributed to joy or to suffering? Will we be the ones who lifted others up or who ignored their pain? He warns that if we have lived our lives benefiting from injustice, then divine justice may feel like suffering to us—not because God is cruel, but because we have grown too comfortable with inequality. Ultimately, Father Pat calls us to begin living the justice of heaven now—by seeing, acknowledging, and responding to the suffering of others. He invites us to participate in God's work of lifting up the lowly, not out of guilt or obligation, but out of a deep recognition of shared humanity and divine love.
