Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives, but early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area and all the people started coming to him and he sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle. They said to him, Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery Now, in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such a woman. So what do you say? They said this to test him so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her. Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? She replied, No one, sir. So Jesus said, Neither do I condemn you. Go and do not sin. The Gospel of the Lord. Thank you. I winced there at the beginning of the Gospel when I opened up the page, because I don't know if for the first time I realized this is today's Gospel, and on this page there's a big thing that says, Holy Week. I'm like, is it next week already? I'm not ready. This Gospel is one of the overlooked miracle stories in the Scripture. We think of it as a story where Jesus just, you know, he just has a good reason and he drives his point home and he logics them out of their bad deeds. So it doesn't sound miraculous to us. But the miracle happens earlier in the story. The miracle is the miracle of one person caught in adultery. And John's Gospel is very clear. John is making this point. He expects you to notice. And in case you don't, he says, after he says they caught her in the act of committing adultery, they said to him, Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery. So someone is missing from this story. My personal suspicion is it's whoever has drugged her before Jesus, but that's my own thing. What's going on here? You know, after this is my Spanish Mass, and I love here the very act of committing adultery. In Spanish it says, in flagrante adulterio. And I'm like, ooh! Scripture is much spicier in other languages. And so there's this moment where you want to say, so... And Scripture says, and they start shaving on Scripture a little. You know, Scripture would say that the penalty for adultery was stoning, but you'll notice they say, Moses said that such women as this must be stoned. You know, I think they must be stoned to marry men like this. We're going to get there in a minute. It's one of those homilies. But it lets us know right off the bat that we've got an injustice that's going through here, and Jesus is aware of the injustice, and the ridiculousness of it. You know, it's like showing up in court You know, it's like showing up in court and literally saying, yes, we caught this person in the very act of conspiracy. Well, we have who? Well, we think he did. Well, we've got an opinion. If you caught him in an act of conspiracy, there's probably someone else there. This even more so. It is very hard to commit adultery by yourself. I've read the canon law on it. It reminds us, in our own time, law is always written by the dominant culture, and we'll always favor the dominant culture, and we cannot confuse laws on the books with justice. They are following the law. Jesus probably handles this the way he does, not from some divine inspiration, but from being raised by Joseph, who was faced with the exact same situation a generation earlier, when Mary was found to be pregnant, and they had not yet been together. And a lot of us are like, well, the angel told him. No, the angel didn't. If you ever read the story, it's very clear. Joseph is the kind of person who says, yeah, we're not going to go with the law on this one, and he decides to handle it quietly. And then an angel appears to him. He's a man who chooses justice over the ability to use the law to get what you want, even when it's not just. And so you look at this, and you go, and things have not changed. The dominant culture always writes the laws and crafts them for the dominant culture. This happened in the 80s. I try no more than once a year to preach on cocaine, but in the 80s, there were two versions of cocaine in America. There was the white powder, and there was crack. The white powder was pure and actually more potent. The law went after the cheaper version. And why would they go after the cheaper version? Because you cannot get elected pulling Joe June and Ward Cleaver out of their suburban home on the evening news. So the cheaper version, zero tolerance. The powdered version going on in the suburbs, oh, you had to be arrested a few times, several times, and much higher amounts of what you could have because the law wanted to make a statement, but they knew that the only people they could really pick on were the poor and get away with it. So Jesus sees this. Here it's the limit. Other times, it's racial groups. Other times, it's socioeconomic groups. But we should never confuse the law with the justice, certainly not the justice of God. It is always going to be written by, you know, the dominant culture. It is a little bit like, and it doesn't mean you can't believe this, it just means it's okay to be suspect. When a church says to you, not one I can think of, but when a church says to you that only men can be in leadership, and how do we know this? Only men can write the theology of the church. How do we know this? God is interpreted by men and told them. Only men can interpret, and that's what God said. God said it. Who said God said it? Whenever the people in control of the law, canon law, civil law, when the people in control of the law are inevitably the ones who seem to benefit from it, it's all right to be suspect. It doesn't mean we abandon everything. It doesn't mean we throw out the law. It doesn't mean we throw out the church. It's okay to have our antenna up. And so, you know, Jesus, they go after Jesus to catch him, and instead he catches them. It is brilliant at the level we see, but it's brilliant at a level we don't always see when he says, let the one who is without sin cast the first stone. There's an old joke, at least old enough that I had heard at the seminary, that, you know, Jesus is, it's this scene, and the woman has been brought before him, and he says, let one of you who is without sin cast the first stone, and from the back of the crowd, this boulder just comes and wipes the poor woman out. And Jesus says, Mother. Now, that should be scandalous to make that kind of joke. Why do people laugh at that? I'll tell you why. Because we cannot, in a million years, think that Mary would do something like that. That's why it's funny. It's funny because it's ridiculous to see Mary in that light. And that's the point Jesus makes without us knowing, which is, if you are without sin, cast the first stone, because he knows anyone without sin has no interest in casting a stone. The desire to cast one in the first place is already sinful. So he's, you know, he's beat them in their own game. And it makes us sit back and say, you know, who are the people that were so willing to look at what they've done and say, oh, you know, this person, they didn't live up to the law. I have a friend who's very, very big on the law until he's walking his dog because his dogs will not behave after he leashes. You know, it is a very privileged position when you can say, yes, well, it's logical to me that I don't, that the laws don't apply. But that's a nice position to have. You know, I follow all the laws. I always want to say, do you not even have a speedometer that you can look at? And then we immediately go, oh, well, those are not the important laws. Which are the important laws? It's the same as in church. What's the difference between a venial sin and a mortal sin? Well, Ken Law has some ideas, but in the real world, the difference between a mortal sin and a venial sin is, a venial sin, those are the sins I do, and mortal sins are the ones you do. Because people all the time do this. I used to, in my very first church, there would be people who were a little more, I think we've gotten away from this a little, which is good. They were a little more mouthy about other people. And they would say to me after, you know, one family would say, you know that, those kids over there, they wear shorts. They wear shorts to Mass. Oh, I'll check Ken and Law and get back to you. And the family wearing the shorts would say, you know that family always comes late. I'll get back to Ken and Law. Each one is sure that the other one is doing the worst thing. It's how we work. It's why Jesus goes for the, it's about just putting the judgment down for a while and working on your life. The amount of energy we spend in judgment. Someone has said to me just recently, and I've heard this so many times, and it's happening more and more. People are so angry with different people in the world right now. And someone said it, and they're always, we're going out of our way to fight away the word things so it doesn't sound so bad. Is it a sin to pray for God's justice on someone? I mean, what am I supposed to, you know, I'm like Jesus. What can you say now? I said it's God's justice. Can we not pray for the justice of God? And I said, here's the problem. I don't think God's justice will look like the justice you want. When we say God's justice, what we really mean is, will God finally put his stamp of approval on me wanting to wipe you people out? I've gone after this section every now and then. When we say God's justice, well, I read scripture, and those people are, you know, to me, wiped out. And I always want to say, yes, right next to the people who eat shrimp. So put down the scampi and take a breath. You know, which scripture you read? I read the one that condemned them. I can find what, you know, I've been doing this a while. I could probably find one to condemn every one of you. But, you know, what happens is it has to be our interest. If we're interested in using scripture to condemn people, oh, it's there. If we're interested in the compassion and mercy of Christ, oh, it's there. Scripture, like law, is as just as the person wielding it. And so we have to take a step back and say, well, you know, what does the justice of God look like? Because if it was actually us trying to live up to God's goodness, none of us makes it. Every one of us depends on the mercy of God, and it's very hard to accept that and still resent it if other people might get it. And someone will say to me, well, this person and that person, they're hurting these people and those ones are hurting that people and that person's hurting that person. What do we do? Pray that people stop getting hurt and don't care how God gets to it. What if God's got a different solution but can stop people from being hurt? We should get mad if people are being hurt. That should disturb us. But we don't have the answer. Or if we have the answer, we don't know how to implement. But we do know how to help. And I've always said so many of us are so busy trying to fix the world that we don't have any time to help anyone. We can spend our whole life in a chair contemplating how to fix the big mess, or we can make a sandwich and take it down a half pound and feed someone. Sometimes we're just called to do as, like in one of the Disney films, sometimes we're just called to do the next right thing. Just the next right thing. And stay out of the judgment day because none of us is without sin. And that's the other, you know. Well, I mean, those people, those who are without sin, as most of us know, the people who sin the most are the ones most fascinated with everyone else's. It's just human nature. And I think we have to start to dig into this and, you know, become a people who can wade through. I mean, this is a lot. This is a headier gospel than we think. I told someone that if I had titled this homily, I mean, who's going to show up if a homily is named after adultery, cocaine, and leash laws? We've been a few places today. That's this gospel. This gospel is saying the injustice is all around you at times. And our job is not to sit and scream and yell and to want the downfall of that person and want that person to succeed and that one to fail. We fight against the injustice. Not even against people. Against the injustice. And sometimes that takes a sacrifice to lift up those who are hurting the most. 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:51.000 I'm not ready. 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:57.000 This Gospel is one of the overlooked miracle stories 00:01:57.000 --> 00:01:59.000 in the Scripture. 00:01:59.000 --> 00:02:02.000 We think of it as a story where Jesus just, 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:04.000 you know, he just has a good reason 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:06.000 and he drives his point home 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:11.000 and he logics them out of their bad deeds. 00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:14.000 So it doesn't sound miraculous to us. 00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:17.000 But the miracle happens earlier in the story. 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:23.000 The miracle is the miracle of one person caught in adultery. 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:32.000 And John's Gospel is very clear. 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:34.000 John is making this point. 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:35.000 He expects you to notice. 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:37.000 And in case you don't, he says, 00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:40.000 after he says they caught her in the act of committing adultery, 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:42.000 they said to him, Teacher, 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:46.000 this woman was caught in the very act of adultery. 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:51.000 So someone is missing from this story. 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:55.000 My personal suspicion is it's whoever has drugged her before Jesus, 00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:57.000 but that's my own thing. 00:02:57.000 --> 00:02:59.000 What's going on here? 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:02.000 You know, after this is my Spanish Mass, 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:05.000 and I love here the very act of committing adultery. 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:07.000 In Spanish it says, 00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:09.000 in flagrante adulterio. 00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:11.000 And I'm like, ooh! 00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:15.000 Scripture is much spicier in other languages. 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:20.000 And so there's this moment where you want to say, 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:22.000 so... 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:24.000 And Scripture says, 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:28.000 and they start shaving on Scripture a little. 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:31.000 You know, Scripture would say that the penalty for adultery was stoning, 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:33.000 but you'll notice they say, 00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:37.000 Moses said that such women as this must be stoned. 00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:43.000 You know, I think they must be stoned to marry men like this. 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:49.000 We're going to get there in a minute. 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:52.000 It's one of those homilies. 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:57.000 But it lets us know right off the bat 00:03:57.000 --> 00:04:01.000 that we've got an injustice that's going through here, 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:04.000 and Jesus is aware of the injustice, 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:07.000 and the ridiculousness of it. 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:11.000 You know, it's like showing up in court 00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:14.000 You know, it's like showing up in court 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:17.000 and literally saying, yes, 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:23.000 we caught this person in the very act of conspiracy. 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:26.000 Well, we have who? 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:28.000 Well, we think he did. 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:30.000 Well, we've got an opinion. 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:33.000 If you caught him in an act of conspiracy, 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:35.000 there's probably someone else there. 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:38.000 This even more so. 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:42.000 It is very hard to commit adultery by yourself. 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:45.000 I've read the canon law on it. 00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:51.000 It reminds us, in our own time, 00:04:51.000 --> 00:04:55.000 law is always written by the dominant culture, 00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:58.000 and we'll always favor the dominant culture, 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:05.000 and we cannot confuse laws on the books with justice. 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:08.000 They are following the law. 00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:12.000 Jesus probably handles this the way he does, 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:15.000 not from some divine inspiration, 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:18.000 but from being raised by Joseph, 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:21.000 who was faced with the exact same situation 00:05:21.000 --> 00:05:23.000 a generation earlier, 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:25.000 when Mary was found to be pregnant, 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:29.000 and they had not yet been together. 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:32.000 And a lot of us are like, well, the angel told him. 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:34.000 No, the angel didn't. 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:36.000 If you ever read the story, it's very clear. 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:38.000 Joseph is the kind of person who says, 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:41.000 yeah, we're not going to go with the law on this one, 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:44.000 and he decides to handle it quietly. 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:46.000 And then an angel appears to him. 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:49.000 He's a man who chooses justice 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:53.000 over the ability to use the law to get what you want, 00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:55.000 even when it's not just. 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.000 And so you look at this, and you go, 00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:02.000 and things have not changed. 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:05.000 The dominant culture always writes the laws 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:09.000 and crafts them for the dominant culture. 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:11.000 This happened in the 80s. 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:15.000 I try no more than once a year to preach on cocaine, 00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:18.000 but in the 80s, 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:21.000 there were two versions of cocaine in America. 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:25.000 There was the white powder, and there was crack. 00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.000 The white powder was pure and actually more potent. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:34.000 The law went after the cheaper version. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:36.000 And why would they go after the cheaper version? 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:38.000 Because you cannot get elected 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:40.000 pulling Joe June and Ward Cleaver 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:45.000 out of their suburban home on the evening news. 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:50.000 So the cheaper version, zero tolerance. 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:53.000 The powdered version going on in the suburbs, 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:56.000 oh, you had to be arrested a few times, several times, 00:06:56.000 --> 00:06:59.000 and much higher amounts of what you could have 00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:03.000 because the law wanted to make a statement, 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:05.000 but they knew that the only people 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:09.000 they could really pick on were the poor and get away with it. 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:11.000 So Jesus sees this. 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:13.000 Here it's the limit. 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:16.000 Other times, it's racial groups. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:18.000 Other times, it's socioeconomic groups. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:23.000 But we should never confuse the law with the justice, 00:07:23.000 --> 00:07:25.000 certainly not the justice of God. 00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:30.000 It is always going to be written by, you know, 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:32.000 the dominant culture. 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:33.000 It is a little bit like, 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:35.000 and it doesn't mean you can't believe this, 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:39.000 it just means it's okay to be suspect. 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:42.000 When a church says to you, not one I can think of, 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:45.000 but when a church says to you 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:47.000 that only men can be in leadership, 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:48.000 and how do we know this? 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:50.000 Only men can write the theology of the church. 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:51.000 How do we know this? 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:55.000 God is interpreted by men and told them. 00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:58.000 Only men can interpret, and that's what God said. 00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:00.000 God said it. 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:02.000 Who said God said it? 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:05.000 Whenever the people in control of the law, 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:06.000 canon law, civil law, 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:08.000 when the people in control of the law 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:11.000 are inevitably the ones who seem to benefit from it, 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:15.000 it's all right to be suspect. 00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:17.000 It doesn't mean we abandon everything. 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:19.000 It doesn't mean we throw out the law. 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:21.000 It doesn't mean we throw out the church. 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:25.000 It's okay to have our antenna up. 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:27.000 And so, you know, Jesus, 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:29.000 they go after Jesus to catch him, 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:31.000 and instead he catches them. 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:34.000 It is brilliant at the level we see, 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:36.000 but it's brilliant at a level we don't always see 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:37.000 when he says, 00:08:37.000 --> 00:08:40.000 let the one who is without sin cast the first stone. 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:42.000 There's an old joke, at least old enough 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:45.000 that I had heard at the seminary, 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:48.000 that, you know, Jesus is, 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:49.000 it's this scene, 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:51.000 and the woman has been brought before him, 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:52.000 and he says, 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:53.000 let one of you who is without sin 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:55.000 cast the first stone, 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:56.000 and from the back of the crowd, 00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:00.000 this boulder just comes and wipes the poor woman out. 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:01.000 And Jesus says, 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:06.000 Mother. 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:08.000 Now, that should be scandalous 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:09.000 to make that kind of joke. 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:11.000 Why do people laugh at that?
