Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, stating, This man welcomes sinners and eats with them. So to them Jesus addressed this parable. A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me. So the father divided the property between them. And after a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country, where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens, who sent him to a farm to tend the swine. And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any. Coming to his senses, he thought, How many of my father's hired workers have more than enough food to eat? But here I am, dying of hunger. I shall get up and go to my father, and I shall say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers. So he got up and went back to his father, and while he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son and embraced him. The son said, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. But his father ordered his servants, Quickly, bring the finest robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take a fattened cack and slaughter it, and let us celebrate with a feast. Because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life, he was lost and has been found. Then the celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field, and on his way back he neared the house and heard the sound of music and dance. He called one of the servants and asked what it might be. The servant said to him, Your brother has returned, and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound. At this the son became angry and refused to enter the house, so the father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, Look, all these years I have served you, and not once did I disobey your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when this son of yours, who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, comes home, for him you slaughtered a fattened calf. He said to him, My son, you are here with me always, and everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice because your brother was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and has been found. The Gospel of the Lord. The parable of a dozen assumptions that I think we make as readers. I think that this story, everyone will tell you, this story is all about the forgiveness of the father. It's all about the forgiveness of the father, and that's a central theme in it. I think it is, more importantly for us, it is about the short-sightedness of both the sons who cannot see what's going well. They're both missing points, right and left, and the reader, sometimes it's not them, and sometimes the reader puts in extra, you know, we like a little extra drama, we like to make sure that our sinners are the worst they can be before they're saved. Give us a little drama there. It begins and it says, so a young son comes to the father and says, Father, I'd like my share of the inheritance. And the father gives him his share of the inheritance. It doesn't say the relationship's broken. It doesn't say he demanded it, his father begrudgingly gave it to him, and there was a blowout and the kid ran away. He says, can I have my inheritance? The father goes, sure. That's how the story, but we never hear it that way because we want there to be a sin immediately because that makes the forgiveness all the more satisfying. And then it says, he goes, and there's this interesting word in Greek that literally means against the norm, against the regular measure. He lives a life of dissipation, which means rather than keeping his money to himself, he spreads it around. And he probably spreads it around a little imprudently. But it's not the worst thing in the world because it doesn't say he spreads it around and then all of a sudden realizes he's messed up and has to go home. He actually establishes himself in a different country and then a famine hits that whole country and he's in trouble. Most of us would say, you know, you have to be pretty well connected before the whole country has to go down for you to be hurt. Most of us look around and say, oh my gosh, I can't believe what's going on, but I'll be fine. He goes and he uses his money on other people and other things. It dissipates. It goes out. And only when there is a famine in the whole country does he find himself in need. And he's a foreigner in that country and is still able to get hired in the middle of a famine. So he's made some inroads for himself. But he doesn't get the best job in the world and you have to remember that, we assume that when we hear these parables, when he says, oh, there's a man with two sons, this is a Hebrew culture here. So for them to be a swine herder, pigs are unclean, it's like the most degrading job he could have because he's working with pork. It's everything he would like to not be doing. And so we misunderstand some of this stuff in the culture. So finally he says, you know what? I'm going to go home. Now he knows in his mind, okay, I've got to win Dad back over. So in his mind, there's been some sort of break in the relationship. But not for the dad. I can't tell you how often. Maybe it's the position of being clergy, but do you know how many times in a year people call me or grab me in the hole and say, Father, I want to apologize for the way I said something yesterday. And I'm like, what? They're thinking I'm offended. And I'm like, what did you say? Oh, you know, I called you by your first name, did you? They're scared to death they've offended someone. The child is pretty sure he's going back as a failure. That's what he's really struggling with. He went off on his own and he fell flat on his face and he picked the wrong place to be at the wrong time. He's not coming home as a success story. But there's nothing in this story that says, well, the father wrestled with it and finally said, I'll bring him back. The minute the father sees him, his son has come home. And even when the servant relates this to the older brother, he doesn't say, your father has taken him back. He says, your father has him back. I think that the child has created a break in this relationship that isn't there. He's created it in his own mind. I've told you this before, but the number of people who will come in and say something along the lines in the confessional, Father, it's been six months since my last confession and I've had three angry thoughts. I've had four since you sat down. It's pretty good. I had an angry thought that I'm sure that God is just so disappointed in me. What if God isn't disappointed in us? At least not nearly as often as we think. We create dramas that literally just exist within us. The second son does the same. The first son actually, the oldest, but second in the story. He does the same thing. He says, well, you know, first he's creating all sorts of drama. His brother has gone away to another country. They've not heard from him. He doesn't even know he's back. That's probably bad. That's probably the only bad moment in this is the father. Oh, look, my son has come back. You would think he'd let the other sons working out in the field. And he comes home and there's a party and he wasn't even invited. That's a bad fall in the story. That creates a little extra tension, I'm sure. But he comes and he hasn't seen this guy in here and he says, but this son of yours who wasted all your money on prostitutes, do you know something the rest of us don't? Are you close enough with those prostitutes that you heard these stories? What's going on? He's so angry that he's creating an uglier story than is there in his mind. And he says to his father, and I've done everything you've ever told me and you've never even given me so much as a goat for a feast, which is something most of us have never said to our parents. You've never so much as given me a goat to share with my friends. And the father looks at him probably like, what is wrong with you? And says, you're the first son. Did you not know that everything I have is yours? He's upset that he hasn't been given what's already his and he just can't see it. He can't see what he already has. You know, this story does not begin as many people hear. Well, you know, I get why the older son is upset because they divide the property in half and the young one goes off and blows his half of the property and then he's going to come back and want to spend some of mine now too? No, no. Oldest son, second oldest son did not split property in half. Younger son got a fraction. Older son gets everything. And he resents the one who got a little. That's the core of this story, is how we start to become as brothers and sisters, how we war with one another because either we have learned to feel guilty and insufficient in who we are and we're sure that God, you know, and if God is upset with who I am, sometimes the only solace is for me to go, at least I'm not them. This is where you start to see people, this is where you see entire churches full of sinners telling other sinners they're not welcome. You know, it starts out as I've always, I always love to say that, you know, this man welcomes sinners and eats with them. And I always say that Jesus responds to that. Why do you eat with sinners? Because there's only so many dinners you can have with Ma. Only other person in history we believe is without sin is his mother. You know, I mean, why do you eat with sinners? Says a bunch of people who think, I mean not us, we're not sinners, we mean them. It starts out with this acknowledgement that the two greatest insecurities we have is I'm not good enough. People think I'm bad. God thinks I'm bad. That's the younger son. And the older, there's not enough for me. I don't get enough things in the world. I haven't got enough. And someone's going to take what little I have. What if, and this is kind of edgy, edgy theology, I know, but what if God knew what he was doing? What if creation is sufficient to our needs? What if I don't need to make sure I have enough stored up that if I happen to live to 140, I'll be well taken care of while others are starving? What if give us this day our daily bread is to be a mindset? What if we're to believe in the abundance of God rather than the fear that there's not going to be enough for me? Or the fear that I'm not going to be enough for anyone else? What if we get beyond fear to a real belief in abundance? God has created you in abundance to be enough. You're good enough. And the world is enough for us. And all of a sudden we stop resenting people who have less. It is so easy to resent people who have less. It can be the sibling who's always falling apart and always seems to need a little more, but really is having a harder life. It can be an immigrant who's just trying to survive while I'm trying to figure out what to do with all that extra stuff I have upstairs because I've got to move back into a rectory and there's too much garbage. What if it's, you know, I've watched people, and I've even been in cars with people. I know I've done it myself. It's raining out. And so, you know, you're at a stop sign or at a light, and when the light turns green, pedestrians are still running across at the last minute because of the rain. And there I am inside my car with the heat going and the music. Did they not see the light change? Resentful of people who have less because either we don't, we can't see what we have, or we can't see who we are. But both are enough. And so the prodigal son's story is these two sons, and Luke is brilliant in his telling of this because we see that the father welcomes the first son back and tries to let him know he's enough. He doesn't say, I accept your apology. He doesn't even listen to it. He's already saying, get a robe, get rings, he's back. And the second son is upset and he says, look, come into the party. You have everything. We have your brother back. Why can't we celebrate that? What Luke doesn't tell us is whether the other brother ever comes into the party and whether the two ever reconcile. That is ours to answer. Will we ever reconcile with the world? Will we ever reconcile with one another? And what it comes down to is, will we ever believe in the abundance of God, or will we live in the fear that we are not good enough, or we don't have it?", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.000 The Lord be with you. 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:03.000 And with your spirit. 00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:06.000 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:11.000 Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, 00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:14.000 but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:17.000 stating, This man welcomes sinners and eats with them. 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:20.000 So to them Jesus addressed this parable. 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:24.000 A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:28.000 Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me. 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:31.000 So the father divided the property between them. 00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:35.000 And after a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings 00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:37.000 and set off to a distant country, 00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:40.000 where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:44.000 When he had freely spent everything, 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:49.000 a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. 00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:52.000 So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens, 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:56.000 who sent him to a farm to tend the swine. 00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:01.000 And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, 00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:03.000 but nobody gave him any. 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:05.000 Coming to his senses, he thought, 00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:09.000 How many of my father's hired workers have more than enough food to eat? 00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:11.000 But here I am, dying of hunger. 00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:14.000 I shall get up and go to my father, and I shall say to him, 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:17.000 Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:20.000 I no longer deserve to be called your son. 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:23.000 Treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers. 00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:25.000 So he got up and went back to his father, 00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:27.000 and while he was still a long way off, 00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:30.000 his father caught sight of him and was filled with compassion. 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:33.000 He ran to his son and embraced him. 00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:36.000 The son said, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:39.000 I no longer deserve to be called your son. 00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:41.000 But his father ordered his servants, 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:45.000 Quickly, bring the finest robe and put it on him. 00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:47.000 Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:49.000 Take a fattened cack and slaughter it, 00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:51.000 and let us celebrate with a feast. 00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:55.000 Because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life, 00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:58.000 he was lost and has been found. 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:00.000 Then the celebration began. 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:02.000 Now the older son had been out in the field, 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:04.000 and on his way back he neared the house 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:06.000 and heard the sound of music and dance. 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:09.000 He called one of the servants and asked what it might be. 00:02:09.000 --> 00:02:11.000 The servant said to him, Your brother has returned, 00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:14.000 and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf 00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:17.000 because he has him back safe and sound. 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:20.000 At this the son became angry and refused to enter the house, 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:23.000 so the father came out and pleaded with him. 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:25.000 He said to his father in reply, 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:27.000 Look, all these years I have served you, 00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:29.000 and not once did I disobey your orders. 00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:34.000 Yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:36.000 But when this son of yours, 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:38.000 who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:43.000 comes home, for him you slaughtered a fattened calf. 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.000 He said to him, My son, you are here with me always, 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:48.000 and everything I have is yours. 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:50.000 But now we must celebrate and rejoice 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:53.000 because your brother was dead and has come back to life. 00:02:53.000 --> 00:02:56.000 He was lost and has been found. 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:58.000 The Gospel of the Lord. 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:08.000 The parable of a dozen assumptions 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:11.000 that I think we make as readers. 00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:17.000 I think that this story, everyone will tell you, 00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:20.000 this story is all about the forgiveness of the father. 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:22.000 It's all about the forgiveness of the father, 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:25.000 and that's a central theme in it. 00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:29.000 I think it is, more importantly for us, 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:34.000 it is about the short-sightedness of both the sons 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:39.000 who cannot see what's going well. 00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:43.000 They're both missing points, right and left, 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:45.000 and the reader, sometimes it's not them, 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:47.000 and sometimes the reader puts in extra, 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:49.000 you know, we like a little extra drama, 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:51.000 we like to make sure that our sinners 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:54.000 are the worst they can be before they're saved. 00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:57.000 Give us a little drama there. 00:03:57.000 --> 00:03:59.000 It begins and it says, 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:02.000 so a young son comes to the father and says, 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:05.000 Father, I'd like my share of the inheritance. 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:10.000 And the father gives him his share of the inheritance. 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:13.000 It doesn't say the relationship's broken. 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:14.000 It doesn't say he demanded it, 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:16.000 his father begrudgingly gave it to him, 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:19.000 and there was a blowout and the kid ran away. 00:04:19.000 --> 00:04:21.000 He says, can I have my inheritance? 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:23.000 The father goes, sure. 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:27.000 That's how the story, but we never hear it that way 00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:30.000 because we want there to be a sin immediately 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:34.000 because that makes the forgiveness all the more satisfying. 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:35.000 And then it says, he goes, 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:38.000 and there's this interesting word in Greek 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:42.000 that literally means against the norm, 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:45.000 against the regular measure. 00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:47.000 He lives a life of dissipation, 00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:50.000 which means rather than keeping his money to himself, 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:53.000 he spreads it around. 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:58.000 And he probably spreads it around a little imprudently. 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:01.000 But it's not the worst thing in the world 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:04.000 because it doesn't say he spreads it around 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:06.000 and then all of a sudden realizes 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:09.000 he's messed up and has to go home. 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:14.000 He actually establishes himself in a different country 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:18.000 and then a famine hits that whole country 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:21.000 and he's in trouble. 00:05:21.000 --> 00:05:23.000 Most of us would say, you know, 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:25.000 you have to be pretty well connected 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:30.000 before the whole country has to go down for you to be hurt. 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:32.000 Most of us look around and say, oh my gosh, 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:37.000 I can't believe what's going on, but I'll be fine. 00:05:37.000 --> 00:05:43.000 He goes and he uses his money on other people and other things. 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:47.000 It dissipates. It goes out. 00:05:47.000 --> 00:05:51.000 And only when there is a famine in the whole country 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:53.000 does he find himself in need. 00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:55.000 And he's a foreigner in that country 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.000 and is still able to get hired in the middle of a famine. 00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:04.000 So he's made some inroads for himself. 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:07.000 But he doesn't get the best job in the world 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:09.000 and you have to remember that, 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:12.000 we assume that when we hear these parables, 00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:14.000 when he says, oh, there's a man with two sons, 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:17.000 this is a Hebrew culture here. 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:20.000 So for them to be a swine herder, 00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:23.000 pigs are unclean, 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:27.000 it's like the most degrading job he could have 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:31.000 because he's working with pork. 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:36.000 It's everything he would like to not be doing. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:40.000 And so we misunderstand some of this stuff in the culture. 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:42.000 So finally he says, you know what? 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:44.000 I'm going to go home. 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:47.000 Now he knows in his mind, 00:06:47.000 --> 00:06:51.000 okay, I've got to win Dad back over. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:55.000 So in his mind, there's been some sort of break in the relationship. 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:58.000 But not for the dad. 00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:00.000 I can't tell you how often. 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:03.000 Maybe it's the position of being clergy, 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:07.000 but do you know how many times in a year people call me 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:10.000 or grab me in the hole and say, 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:14.000 Father, I want to apologize for the way I said something yesterday. 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:19.000 And I'm like, what? 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:21.000 They're thinking I'm offended. 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:23.000 And I'm like, what did you say? 00:07:23.000 --> 00:07:27.000 Oh, you know, I called you by your first name, did you? 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:33.000 They're scared to death they've offended someone. 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:39.000 The child is pretty sure he's going back as a failure. 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:42.000 That's what he's really struggling with. 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:45.000 He went off on his own and he fell flat on his face 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:49.000 and he picked the wrong place to be at the wrong time. 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:54.000 He's not coming home as a success story. 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:57.000 But there's nothing in this story that says, 00:07:57.000 --> 00:08:00.000 well, the father wrestled with it and finally said, I'll bring him back. 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:03.000 The minute the father sees him, his son has come home. 00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:06.000 And even when the servant relates this to the older brother, 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:09.000 he doesn't say, your father has taken him back. 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:14.000 He says, your father has him back. 00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:23.000 I think that the child has created a break in this relationship that isn't there. 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:25.000 He's created it in his own mind. 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:28.000 I've told you this before, but the number of people who will come in 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:30.000 and say something along the lines in the confessional, 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:33.000 Father, it's been six months since my last confession 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:38.000 and I've had three angry thoughts. 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:41.000 I've had four since you sat down. 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:44.000 It's pretty good. 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:47.000 I had an angry thought that I'm sure that God is just so disappointed in me. 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:52.000 What if God isn't disappointed in us? 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:57.000 At least not nearly as often as we think. 00:08:57.000 --> 00:09:05.000 We create dramas that literally just exist within us. 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:08.000 The second son does the same. 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:11.000 The first son actually, the oldest, but second in the story. 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:14.000 He does the same thing. 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:20.000 He says, well, you know, first he's creating all sorts of drama. 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:23.000 His brother has gone away to another country. 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:25.000 They've not heard from him. 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:27.000 He doesn't even know he's back. 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:29.000 That's probably bad. 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:34.000 That's probably the only bad moment in this is the father. 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:37.000 Oh, look, my son has come back. 00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:41.000 You would think he'd let the other sons working out in the field. 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:45.000 And he comes home and there's a party and he wasn't even invited. 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:48.000 That's a bad fall in the story. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:51.000 That creates a little extra tension, I'm sure. 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:55.000 But he comes and he hasn't seen this guy in here and he says, 00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:59.000 but this son of yours who wasted all your money on prostitutes, 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:03.000 do you know something the rest of us don't? 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:07.000 Are you close enough with those prostitutes that you heard these stories? 00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:10.000 What's going on? 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:17.000 He's so angry that he's creating an uglier story than is there in his mind. 00:10:17.000 --> 00:10:21.000 And he says to his father, and I've done everything you've ever told me 00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:26.000 and you've never even given me so much as a goat for a feast, 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:31.000 which is something most of us have never said to our parents. 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:34.000 You've never so much as given me a goat to share with my friends. 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:38.000 And the father looks at him probably like, what is wrong with you? 00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:42.000 And says, you're the first son. 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:47.000 Did you not know that everything I have is yours? 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:51.000 He's upset that he hasn't been given what's already his 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:55.000 and he just can't see it. 00:10:55.000 --> 00:11:00.000 He can't see what he already has. 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:03.000 You know, this story does not begin as many people hear. 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:07.000 Well, you know, I get why the older son is upset 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:10.000 because they divide the property in half 00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:13.000 and the young one goes off and blows his half of the property 00:11:13.000 --> 00:11:17.000 and then he's going to come back and want to spend some of mine now too? 00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:18.000 No, no. 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:23.000 Oldest son, second oldest son did not split property in half. 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:26.000 Younger son got a fraction. 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:29.000 Older son gets everything. 00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:33.000 And he resents the one who got a little. 00:11:33.000 --> 00:11:37.000 That's the core of this story, 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:41.000 is how we start to become as brothers and sisters, 00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:46.000 how we war with one another because either we have learned 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:49.000 to feel guilty and insufficient in who we are 00:11:49.000 --> 00:11:53.000 and we're sure that God, you know, and if God is upset with who I am, 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:56.000 sometimes the only solace is for me to go, 00:11:56.000 --> 00:12:00.000 at least I'm not them. 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:02.000 This is where you start to see people, 00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:05.000 this is where you see entire churches full of sinners 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:09.000 telling other sinners they're not welcome. 00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:12.000 You know, it starts out as I've always, 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:14.000 I always love to say that, you know, 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:17.000 this man welcomes sinners and eats with them. 00:12:17.000 --> 00:12:19.000 And I always say that Jesus responds to that. 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:21.000 Why do you eat with sinners? 00:12:21.000 --> 00:12:27.000 Because there's only so many dinners you can have with Ma. 00:12:27.000 --> 00:12:32.000 Only other person in history we believe is without sin is his mother. 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:36.000 You know, I mean, why do you eat with sinners? 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:41.000 Says a bunch of people who think, I mean not us, we're not sinners, we mean them. 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:44.000 It starts out with this acknowledgement 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:48.000 that the two greatest insecurities we have is I'm not good enough. 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:51.000 People think I'm bad. God thinks I'm bad. 00:12:51.000 --> 00:12:54.000 That's the younger son. And the older, there's not enough for me. 00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:57.000 I don't get enough things in the world. I haven't got enough. 00:12:57.000 --> 00:13:00.000 And someone's going to take what little I have. 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:05.000 What if, and this is kind of edgy, edgy theology, I know, 00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:10.000 but what if God knew what he was doing? 00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:16.000 What if creation is sufficient to our needs? 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:20.000 What if I don't need to make sure I have enough stored up 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:23.000 that if I happen to live to 140, 00:13:23.000 --> 00:13:26.000 I'll be well taken care of while others are starving? 00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:31.000 What if give us this day our daily bread is to be a mindset? 00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:34.000 What if we're to believe in the abundance of God 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:37.000 rather than the fear that there's not going to be enough for me? 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:41.000 Or the fear that I'm not going to be enough for anyone else? 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:47.000 What if we get beyond fear to a real belief in abundance? 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:51.000 God has created you in abundance to be enough. 00:13:51.000 --> 00:13:54.000 You're good enough. 00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:58.000 And the world is enough for us. 00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:02.000 And all of a sudden we stop resenting people who have less. 00:14:02.000 --> 00:14:07.000 It is so easy to resent people who have less. 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:12.000 It can be the sibling who's always falling apart 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:15.000 and always seems to need a little more, 00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:18.000 but really is having a harder life. 00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:23.000 It can be an immigrant who's just trying to survive 00:14:23.000 --> 00:14:26.000 while I'm trying to figure out what to do 00:14:26.000 --> 00:14:29.000 with all that extra stuff I have upstairs 00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:32.000 because I've got to move back into a rectory 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:34.000 and there's too much garbage. 00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:37.000 What if it's, you know, I've watched people, 00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:40.000 and I've even been in cars with people. 00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:42.000 I know I've done it myself. 00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:44.000 It's raining out. 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:47.000 And so, you know, you're at a stop sign 00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:49.000 or at a light, and when the light turns green, 00:14:49.000 --> 00:14:52.000 pedestrians are still running across at the last minute 00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:54.000 because of the rain. 00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:58.000 And there I am inside my car with the heat going and the music. 00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:02.000 Did they not see the light change? 00:15:03.000 --> 00:15:07.000 Resentful of people who have less 00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:13.000 because either we don't, we can't see what we have, 00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:16.000 or we can't see who we are. 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:19.000 But both are enough. 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:23.000 And so the prodigal son's story is these two sons, 00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:26.000 and Luke is brilliant in his telling of this 00:15:26.000 --> 00:15:30.000 because we see that the father welcomes the first son back 00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:33.000 and tries to let him know he's enough. 00:15:33.000 --> 00:15:35.000 He doesn't say, I accept your apology. 00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:37.000 He doesn't even listen to it. 00:15:37.000 --> 00:15:41.000 He's already saying, get a robe, get rings, he's back. 00:15:41.000 --> 00:15:43.000 And the second son is upset and he says, 00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:45.000 look, come into the party. 00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:47.000 You have everything. 00:15:47.000 --> 00:15:49.000 We have your brother back. 00:15:49.000 --> 00:15:51.000 Why can't we celebrate that? 00:15:51.000 --> 00:15:53.000 What Luke doesn't tell us 00:15:53.000 --> 00:15:57.000 is whether the other brother ever comes into the party 00:15:57.000 --> 00:15:59.000 and whether the two ever reconcile. 00:15:59.000 --> 00:16:02.000 That is ours to answer. 00:16:02.000 --> 00:16:05.000 Will we ever reconcile with the world? 00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:08.000 Will we ever reconcile with one another? 00:16:08.000 --> 00:16:10.000 And what it comes down to is, 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:13.000 will we ever believe in the abundance of God, 00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:15.000 or will we live in the fear 00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:19.000 that we are not good enough, or we don't have it?

Father Pat’s message focuses on shifting the traditional interpretation of the Parable of the Prodigal Son from being solely about the father’s forgiveness to a deeper exploration of the inner struggles of both sons. He emphasizes that the real transformation needed lies not in the father’s heart—because the father’s love never wavered—but in the sons’ distorted perceptions of themselves and their relationship to the father. The younger son is burdened by shame and self-doubt, imagining a rupture that never existed. The older son is consumed by resentment and scarcity, blind to the abundance he already possesses. Father Pat challenges the listener to consider the implications of believing in God’s abundance, rather than living in fear of inadequacy or insufficiency, and invites us to ask whether we, too, will enter the celebration of reconciliation and grace. Father Pat begins by addressing a common assumption about the Parable of the Prodigal Son—that it is primarily about the father's forgiveness. While acknowledging that forgiveness is present, he reframes the story as one about perception, fear, and the inability of both sons to see clearly. The younger son is often painted as a villain who defiantly demands his inheritance and squanders it immorally. However, Father Pat points out that the Gospel does not describe a dramatic rupture in the relationship at the outset. The father grants the inheritance without resistance, and there is no indication of a falling out. The younger son’s life of “dissipation” is not condemned as overtly sinful but described as living “against the norm,” implying poor judgment rather than evil intent. It is not until a famine—a crisis outside his control—hits the land that he finds himself destitute. Even in his lowly state, the younger son manages to find employment, suggesting he has some resilience and resourcefulness. Yet his shame and fear of failure convince him that he is no longer worthy of being a son. He rehearses a speech of contrition, prepared to return not as a child but as a servant. But the father, far from holding a grudge, runs to meet him, embracing him before a word is spoken. The father's immediate response is restoration, not judgment. This suggests that the break in relationship existed only in the son’s mind. The father never withdrew his love; it was the son's inner narrative of unworthiness that created the distance. The older son, meanwhile, is also caught in a false narrative. He resents the celebration of his brother’s return, imagining that the prodigal has not only squandered his own inheritance but now threatens to consume what belongs to him. Yet, as Father Pat explains, in the cultural context of the story, the older son would have received a double share of the inheritance and retained all that remained. His fear that he is being shortchanged is unfounded. Moreover, he accuses the younger brother of wasting money on prostitutes—a detail not present in the text—revealing that he, too, has created a more dramatic and damning version of events than the reality. This suggests that the older brother’s anger stems from a mindset of scarcity and a deep-seated insecurity: the fear that he is not recognized, not celebrated, not enough. The father’s response to the older son is tender and revealing: “Everything I have is yours.” This is not merely a gesture of reassurance but a theological declaration. The older son has always had access to the father’s abundance but failed to recognize it. His bitterness arises from the illusion that love and grace are limited resources, and if one son receives mercy, the other is deprived. Father Pat connects this mindset to broader human tendencies: the fear that we are not enough, or that there is not enough—of love, of attention, of resources. He likens this to real-life scenarios: people feeling guilty for minor offenses, individuals overreacting out of fear of being unloved, or entire religious communities excluding others in an attempt to secure their own righteousness. The parable ends without resolution: we do not know if the older son joins the celebration. Luke leaves the ending open-ended to invite us, the listeners, to answer the question: will we accept God's radical grace, or will we stay outside the feast, clinging to our resentment, fear, and self-righteousness? Father Pat emphasizes that the heart of the Gospel is not about God withholding love until we prove ourselves, but about God’s love being constant, abundant, and waiting for us to accept it. The challenge is not to earn divine acceptance but to believe it—to see ourselves and others through the lens of God’s abundant mercy. Ultimately, Father Pat calls us to a spiritual conversion from fear to faith, from scarcity to abundance, from isolation to communion. If we believe that God created us as “enough,” and that divine love is not finite, we can stop resenting others who seem to have less or need more. We can move beyond judgment to compassion, beyond rivalry to reconciliation. The parable, then, is not just about a father and two sons—it is about us, our families, our communities, and our world. It is an invitation to enter the feast, not because we’ve earned it, but because we are already loved.
