How can you say to another let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own? Hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first, then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye a Good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ So before I get into this I'm just going to let you know this is seems to be a good need to do this We are at least looking Probably not anytime soon, but certainly by fall about having to change the mass schedule to split this mass We've got a couple dozen people who can't find seats now. We do need to make sure that people aren't like Don't load luggage and things into the seats. Thanks to I don't notice There are places where like no couples will sit with one empty seat on either side of them We're gonna have to learn to get a little closer And and which is you know it according to the day you have to even get close to sketchy people So, you know, but we're gonna try to try to make more room If you do end up splitting we're probably gonna have a schedule that there's a mass 45 minutes earlier than this and 45 minutes later than this and people will have to pick it's just it's it's I'm getting too crowded success is always its own punishment and We'll figure out the schedule if that's necessary Today's gospel opens with one of the strangest lines Jesus told his disciple a parable Then It just said can a blind person lead it just starts asking questions and throwing out, but there's no parable here We don't get a single parable in this maybe there's one missing or maybe Luke being the only Gentile was not really sure what a parable was and Threw it in there. Jesus gave a parable. I want to say. Oh, no, that's a question Little different so but but this question about I think sometimes we We maybe kind of have a skewed vision of what this is talking about. You know, it sounds like Don't judge people because you know normally when you're judging someone you're you've got a worse thing about you know, the same thing Oh, they're being a little dishonest, but you're really dishonest and you just are going after them it's the Splitter and the wooden beam are not supposed to be necessarily the same thing going on What it's saying is you have no idea how many obstacles there are in your vision when you're looking at another person You don't see them clearly You at every time you are irritated at someone at least half of what irritates you is coming from you We we have our own stuff that comes into every situation This is why When you know when you're really someone said something in there and you're like who said that who said that then you find out? It's your best friend you go. Oh, well, I probably understand that thing Because we bring a whole different set of things to the to the relationships we like I always tell people it's it is dicey at best to with another adult to try to Browbeat people into coming to church Because you know you're thinking I'm just make them go to church and they're willing to like it And if you've browbeat them into church, they walk in going. I dare them to impress me and they tend to walk out with exactly the attitude they walk in with and people who are Excited to go are going to enjoy it. I Learned that with my parents my mother's so badly wanted my dad to like theater Never won that one You know, my dad was like is this one of those where people are going to like break into song personally school? Does he do they know that that dance does not further the story and any You know and you know and every time they win My dad was like bored out of his mind and my mother was excited about it before she got there What they came in with they saw the same play but they saw it with their own set of baggage and And it happens all the time Every time someone your teacher as a matter of fact the people in your families Not that we have any but those people your families that are at a view Are the one I don't kill me for this. They are the ones that are most like you That's the first time they ever understood that passage about that running Jesus out of town in the red No, it's and it's not that you'll be like, uh-uh No, because I'm politically way over here and they're politically way over there and you both think you're right We'll listen to the other You're both equal amounts of stubborn you're both equal amount, you know, I I have a friend and she is a Very I that I wanted my children to grow up. I want them to be as independent as I am and her daughter has kind of moved into a very very conservative Baptist Church and that going into one of those what they call the trad movement where she will stay home and her husband will make all her decisions for her and um and The mom is like, where did this come from? And I said you wanted her to be independent from everyone, but you Look at the bright side. She chose something you would never choose. Isn't that great independence? You know, I mean it's like It is often the thing that we hold in common that will drive us up a tree, but Jesus is actually just saying, you know That beam in your own eye keeps you from seeing others well, I I I kind of happened upon this at the last mass, but the perfect example of this is you know, when I see other people now and this comes with an honorable age My joints don't feel so honorable but They're about in your 50s. You start to get something that you never knew existed called floaters Yeah, yeah floaters are these little bits of protein to just break off in your eye and they just float across you think What is that thing in the air? And it goes away and it happens every once in a great while and then it happens every day and then it happens all the Timing and you know, I I I did the good news is I don't notice flies anymore But but you know, you have these floaters and I would say, you know a Splinter that you see in the other person's eye is probably a floater It's your own it's a floater We we see we break our vision to everything. I told this story a handful of times But I'm getting older so I get away with keep telling it and that is you know Being in traffic and being upset because the person in front of me is going too slow Because I mean I have a right For other people to drive the speed I would like But I'm getting upset and sure enough the minute there's two lanes I move over and I get her and I don't like zip around. Oh, I mean I handled it very well But you do as you get near you do have to do the Because heaven forbid that the stranger you don't know doesn't know that Pat Dolan is upset Gotta let him know and I look over and it's John Kite my best friend in the world and I'm like You know But what fascinates me about that story every time I think about it is I was so frustrated Where did all that frustration and anger go? Was gone like that Now that had been someone I didn't know I'd still had that frustration and anger So maybe the frustration and anger had nothing to do with the other person But how I would view someone I don't know versus how I'd view someone I do when I full of floaters tons of floaters that day I Thought I was upset over what someone else was doing and I was upset because I wasn't sure they were one of the people that matter But doper and it was someone that matters someone I had to have a relationship with and Oh, then it changes and how we how do we get past that? How do we start to understand? our impatience with strangers Has to do with the mix of stuff that we bring in to the stranger encounter This is where all prejudice comes from They are people we don't know You know, that's why if you ever want to make someone cringe and it doesn't matter whether you're talking about You know Different faiths and people of sexualities or ethnicities, but when you say oh, I have a friend who's one of you Like That means I'm not prejudiced No It means that you see people, you know differently than people you don't and the people you don't you still stratify into who counts and doesn't and it's you know, if You don't get to use that and it should be cringeworthy when we say that, you know I actually have friends who are laity I'm not sure if I have any for priests, but Please tell any priest, you know, I said that But but there's that idea of what we bring to the situation and then that's what I love this Until we stop until we can get the stuff out of our eyes and see people clearly Until we can get the stuff out of our eyes and see people clearly we won't see ourselves clearly because we have to see ourselves through other people's eyes and Everything is just another reflection of us this first reading Sirach which like Proverbs like Ecclesiastes These are up. These are books. You should never read I mean you should reflect a line here and there in this line, but they're not it's like reading a dictionary it just moves thought after thought after if you read this from cover to cover it's like wandering through a Fortune cookie factory and just picking up pieces of paper off the floor and this one has nothing to do with that Well, there's no order to it But I love this opening when a sieve is shaken the husks appear So do once fall than one speaks I was going to use that as an excuse not to preach this good But But what it doesn't say which is important because I think most of us think this is a warning Maybe our faults need to appear It's not saying don't speak or people will know who you are It's not saying who don't shake anything up or we'll start to see where all the issues are and say that's okay Shake things up You know as I guess I get that story of the of the Me of me on the road and a friend that I passed I start to realize and you know that that Phrase that I'd love to take apart all the time. Oh, I was caught off-guard. I Didn't mean to say that but I was caught off-guard meaning. I wasn't paying attention and the real me came out of lightspeed My facade usually is so good. It just wasn't that quick and held up over my real me count And I keep thinking as we get into Lent what happens if we spend Lent trying to dismantle our facades What if we start to be who we are in the world, you know my Maya My least favorite part of confession theologically, it's not that I I don't run out tell people anything That that's for the book I Said I want I want to write a book called confessions of an unwed father But there's this sense that It works against itself It says you need to confess but only if you can confess To someone who will keep all your secrets so that your facade will never be damaged Let's get people to confess in a way that we're going to try and get you to confess without anyone ever really knowing who you are This is why I'll tell you in 90% of my confessions are never from holy family All the people from other parishes line up. I assume the people here are over at other parishes I have people and they rotate the different that way. No one priest has to know everything No one knows he's still As long as I get out of here unknown As long as they'll let me live a secret life in heaven Keep thinking when do we get rid of the facade? All dogs may go to heaven. No, not all but you know, but facades know What happens think of how many people depend on their facade? And there's a saying going around now that says would people show you who they are believe it and today it says and Stop making it up until you see it until you really see it. Not not your own vision Until we can get past what we're bringing to the vision we Jesus says don't judge people because He's nicer than I am which is cut. I mean, you know what Jesus said stop judging people because you're really stupid at it You're bad at judging people. You don't know what you're doing To which we say well, I'll judge you now. Oh You know, it's it's that we don't know we think we know we never have the whole picture You will never have the picture the full picture of anyone you choose to pass judgment on and What we know about people who are created in the image of God is if you ever know that well enough to see the whole picture You will no longer have any interest in passive judgment", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.199 The Lord be with you a reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 00:00:08.460 --> 00:00:14.899 Jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit me 00:00:15.500 --> 00:00:20.540 No disciple is superior to his teacher, but when fully trained every disciple who will be like his teacher 00:00:21.540 --> 00:00:26.159 Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye and not perceive the wooden beam in your own? 00:00:26.819 --> 00:00:33.680 How can you say to another let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own? 00:00:34.919 --> 00:00:42.779 Hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first, then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye a 00:00:43.740 --> 00:00:50.840 Good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:54.000 the Gospel of the Lord 00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:57.000 Jesus Christ 00:01:01.599 --> 00:01:06.879 So before I get into this I'm just going to let you know this is seems to be a good need to do this 00:01:07.959 --> 00:01:09.959 We are at least looking 00:01:10.139 --> 00:01:16.440 Probably not anytime soon, but certainly by fall about having to change the mass schedule to split this mass 00:01:17.360 --> 00:01:22.300 We've got a couple dozen people who can't find seats now. We do need to make sure that people aren't like 00:01:23.300 --> 00:01:27.819 Don't load luggage and things into the seats. Thanks to I don't notice 00:01:27.819 --> 00:01:32.419 There are places where like no couples will sit with one empty seat on either side of them 00:01:32.419 --> 00:01:35.580 We're gonna have to learn to get a little closer 00:01:36.260 --> 00:01:41.739 And and which is you know it according to the day you have to even get close to sketchy people 00:01:43.540 --> 00:01:46.660 So, you know, but we're gonna try to try to make more room 00:01:46.860 --> 00:01:53.459 If you do end up splitting we're probably gonna have a schedule that there's a mass 45 minutes earlier than this and 45 minutes later than 00:01:53.459 --> 00:02:00.099 this and people will have to pick it's just it's it's I'm getting too crowded success is always its own punishment and 00:02:01.300 --> 00:02:04.260 We'll figure out the schedule if that's necessary 00:02:04.980 --> 00:02:08.220 Today's gospel opens with one of the strangest lines 00:02:09.059 --> 00:02:11.059 Jesus told his disciple a parable 00:02:12.059 --> 00:02:14.059 Then 00:02:14.779 --> 00:02:20.380 It just said can a blind person lead it just starts asking questions and throwing out, but there's no parable here 00:02:20.380 --> 00:02:22.380 We don't get a single parable in this 00:02:23.059 --> 00:02:25.059 maybe there's one missing or 00:02:25.339 --> 00:02:30.220 maybe Luke being the only Gentile was not really sure what a parable was and 00:02:30.979 --> 00:02:34.820 Threw it in there. Jesus gave a parable. I want to say. Oh, no, that's a 00:02:35.500 --> 00:02:37.179 question 00:02:37.179 --> 00:02:41.460 Little different so but but this question about I think sometimes we 00:02:42.259 --> 00:02:47.339 We maybe kind of have a skewed vision of what this is talking about. You know, it sounds like 00:02:48.779 --> 00:02:55.699 Don't judge people because you know normally when you're judging someone you're you've got a worse thing about you know, the same thing 00:02:55.699 --> 00:03:00.419 Oh, they're being a little dishonest, but you're really dishonest and you just are going after them 00:03:00.940 --> 00:03:01.979 it's 00:03:01.979 --> 00:03:03.500 the 00:03:03.500 --> 00:03:08.259 Splitter and the wooden beam are not supposed to be necessarily the same thing going on 00:03:09.419 --> 00:03:17.020 What it's saying is you have no idea how many obstacles there are in your vision when you're looking at another person 00:03:17.580 --> 00:03:19.580 You don't see them clearly 00:03:20.740 --> 00:03:27.660 You at every time you are irritated at someone at least half of what irritates you is coming from you 00:03:28.660 --> 00:03:33.139 We we have our own stuff that comes into every situation 00:03:34.139 --> 00:03:36.139 This is why 00:03:36.220 --> 00:03:42.660 When you know when you're really someone said something in there and you're like who said that who said that then you find out? 00:03:42.660 --> 00:03:45.460 It's your best friend you go. Oh, well, I probably understand that thing 00:03:47.979 --> 00:03:53.380 Because we bring a whole different set of things to the to the relationships we like 00:03:53.380 --> 00:03:59.779 I always tell people it's it is dicey at best to with another adult to try to 00:04:00.179 --> 00:04:02.179 Browbeat people into coming to church 00:04:03.460 --> 00:04:07.179 Because you know you're thinking I'm just make them go to church and they're willing to like it 00:04:07.179 --> 00:04:13.220 And if you've browbeat them into church, they walk in going. I dare them to impress me and 00:04:13.820 --> 00:04:18.459 they tend to walk out with exactly the attitude they walk in with and people who are 00:04:19.100 --> 00:04:21.260 Excited to go are going to enjoy it. I 00:04:22.019 --> 00:04:27.140 Learned that with my parents my mother's so badly wanted my dad to like theater 00:04:30.260 --> 00:04:32.179 Never won that one 00:04:32.179 --> 00:04:38.540 You know, my dad was like is this one of those where people are going to like break into song personally school? 00:04:41.739 --> 00:04:46.459 Does he do they know that that dance does not further the story and any 00:04:47.220 --> 00:04:50.140 You know and you know and every time they win 00:04:50.660 --> 00:04:56.899 My dad was like bored out of his mind and my mother was excited about it before she got there 00:04:58.540 --> 00:05:02.779 What they came in with they saw the same play 00:05:03.500 --> 00:05:06.899 but they saw it with their own set of baggage and 00:05:08.059 --> 00:05:10.339 And it happens all the time 00:05:11.019 --> 00:05:14.380 Every time someone your teacher as a matter of fact the people in your families 00:05:14.579 --> 00:05:17.619 Not that we have any but those people your families that are at a view 00:05:18.500 --> 00:05:22.619 Are the one I don't kill me for this. They are the ones that are most like you 00:05:29.100 --> 00:05:34.380 That's the first time they ever understood that passage about that running Jesus out of town in the red 00:05:36.859 --> 00:05:39.500 No, it's and it's not that you'll be like, uh-uh 00:05:40.179 --> 00:05:47.019 No, because I'm politically way over here and they're politically way over there and you both think you're right 00:05:47.019 --> 00:05:49.019 We'll listen to the other 00:05:49.500 --> 00:05:56.940 You're both equal amounts of stubborn you're both equal amount, you know, I I have a friend and she is a 00:05:58.339 --> 00:06:04.540 Very I that I wanted my children to grow up. I want them to be as independent as I am and 00:06:05.980 --> 00:06:07.899 her daughter 00:06:07.899 --> 00:06:12.579 has kind of moved into a very very conservative Baptist Church and that 00:06:12.739 --> 00:06:19.019 going into one of those what they call the trad movement where she will stay home and her husband will make all her decisions for 00:06:19.019 --> 00:06:21.019 her and um and 00:06:21.140 --> 00:06:26.339 The mom is like, where did this come from? And I said you wanted her to be independent from everyone, but you 00:06:28.540 --> 00:06:33.700 Look at the bright side. She chose something you would never choose. Isn't that great independence? 00:06:34.700 --> 00:06:36.700 You know, I mean it's like 00:06:37.019 --> 00:06:43.459 It is often the thing that we hold in common that will drive us up a tree, but Jesus is actually just saying, you know 00:06:44.260 --> 00:06:47.739 That beam in your own eye keeps you from seeing others 00:06:47.739 --> 00:06:53.700 well, I I I kind of happened upon this at the last mass, but the perfect example of this is you know, 00:06:53.700 --> 00:06:55.700 when I see other people now and 00:06:56.380 --> 00:06:58.380 this comes with 00:06:59.100 --> 00:07:01.100 an honorable age 00:07:04.019 --> 00:07:06.619 My joints don't feel so honorable but 00:07:07.899 --> 00:07:14.160 They're about in your 50s. You start to get something that you never knew existed called floaters 00:07:16.459 --> 00:07:22.540 Yeah, yeah floaters are these little bits of protein to just break off in your eye and they just float across you think 00:07:22.540 --> 00:07:24.540 What is that thing in the air? 00:07:26.940 --> 00:07:32.940 And it goes away and it happens every once in a great while and then it happens every day and then it happens all the 00:07:32.940 --> 00:07:38.459 Timing and you know, I I I did the good news is I don't notice flies anymore 00:07:40.299 --> 00:07:44.299 But but you know, you have these floaters and I would say, you know a 00:07:46.019 --> 00:07:50.500 Splinter that you see in the other person's eye is probably a floater 00:07:52.619 --> 00:07:54.619 It's your own it's a floater 00:07:54.859 --> 00:08:01.859 We we see we break our vision to everything. I told this story a handful of times 00:08:02.940 --> 00:08:06.899 But I'm getting older so I get away with keep telling it and that is you know 00:08:07.299 --> 00:08:11.179 Being in traffic and being upset because the person in front of me is going too slow 00:08:12.100 --> 00:08:14.100 Because I mean I have a right 00:08:15.059 --> 00:08:17.359 For other people to drive the speed I would like 00:08:18.579 --> 00:08:22.059 But I'm getting upset and sure enough the minute there's two lanes 00:08:22.059 --> 00:08:27.540 I move over and I get her and I don't like zip around. Oh, I mean I handled it very well 00:08:27.540 --> 00:08:29.540 But you do as you get near 00:08:29.660 --> 00:08:31.660 you do have to do the 00:08:33.700 --> 00:08:38.299 Because heaven forbid that the stranger you don't know doesn't know that Pat Dolan is upset 00:08:38.580 --> 00:08:42.820 Gotta let him know and I look over and it's John Kite my best friend in the world 00:08:44.099 --> 00:08:46.099 and I'm like 00:08:49.900 --> 00:08:51.780 You know 00:08:51.780 --> 00:08:57.460 But what fascinates me about that story every time I think about it is I was so frustrated 00:08:58.140 --> 00:09:00.260 Where did all that frustration and anger go? 00:09:01.099 --> 00:09:03.099 Was gone like that 00:09:03.179 --> 00:09:06.900 Now that had been someone I didn't know I'd still had that frustration and anger 00:09:08.020 --> 00:09:12.960 So maybe the frustration and anger had nothing to do with the other person 00:09:14.340 --> 00:09:18.940 But how I would view someone I don't know versus how I'd view someone I do 00:09:20.099 --> 00:09:21.979 when I 00:09:21.979 --> 00:09:24.659 full of floaters tons of floaters that day I 00:09:25.500 --> 00:09:33.020 Thought I was upset over what someone else was doing and I was upset because I wasn't sure they were one of the people that matter 00:09:35.059 --> 00:09:38.580 But doper and it was someone that matters someone I had to have a relationship with and 00:09:39.340 --> 00:09:45.460 Oh, then it changes and how we how do we get past that? How do we start to understand? 00:09:46.059 --> 00:09:47.059 our 00:09:47.059 --> 00:09:49.059 impatience with strangers 00:09:49.380 --> 00:09:54.020 Has to do with the mix of stuff that we bring in 00:09:54.659 --> 00:09:56.659 to the stranger encounter 00:09:56.900 --> 00:09:58.900 This is where all prejudice comes from 00:09:59.460 --> 00:10:01.460 They are people we don't know 00:10:01.780 --> 00:10:08.020 You know, that's why if you ever want to make someone cringe and it doesn't matter whether you're talking about 00:10:08.859 --> 00:10:10.859 You know 00:10:10.859 --> 00:10:18.460 Different faiths and people of sexualities or ethnicities, but when you say oh, I have a friend who's one of you 00:10:18.700 --> 00:10:20.700 Like 00:10:20.739 --> 00:10:22.739 That means I'm not prejudiced 00:10:22.739 --> 00:10:22.979 No 00:10:22.979 --> 00:10:28.099 It means that you see people, you know differently than people you don't and the people you don't you still 00:10:28.460 --> 00:10:30.580 stratify into who counts and doesn't 00:10:31.179 --> 00:10:33.179 and it's you know, if 00:10:33.820 --> 00:10:39.659 You don't get to use that and it should be cringeworthy when we say that, you know 00:10:39.659 --> 00:10:41.659 I actually have friends who are laity 00:10:42.380 --> 00:10:46.739 I'm not sure if I have any for priests, but 00:10:51.099 --> 00:10:53.099 Please tell any priest, you know, I said that 00:10:54.580 --> 00:11:00.179 But but there's that idea of what we bring to the situation and then that's what I love this 00:11:01.380 --> 00:11:05.940 Until we stop until we can get the stuff out of our eyes and see people clearly 00:11:05.940 --> 00:11:09.299 Until we can get the stuff out of our eyes and see people clearly 00:11:09.340 --> 00:11:15.059 we won't see ourselves clearly because we have to see ourselves through other people's eyes and 00:11:16.219 --> 00:11:23.140 Everything is just another reflection of us this first reading Sirach which like Proverbs like 00:11:24.419 --> 00:11:26.020 Ecclesiastes 00:11:26.020 --> 00:11:29.380 These are up. These are books. You should never read 00:11:29.380 --> 00:11:35.179 I mean you should reflect a line here and there in this line, but they're not it's like reading a dictionary 00:11:36.419 --> 00:11:42.659 it just moves thought after thought after if you read this from cover to cover it's like wandering through a 00:11:42.979 --> 00:11:47.580 Fortune cookie factory and just picking up pieces of paper off the floor and this one has nothing to do with that 00:11:47.580 --> 00:11:48.739 Well, there's no order to it 00:11:48.739 --> 00:11:53.659 But I love this opening when a sieve is shaken the husks appear 00:11:53.979 --> 00:11:58.820 So do once fall than one speaks I was going to use that as an excuse not to preach this good 00:11:58.940 --> 00:12:00.940 But 00:12:00.940 --> 00:12:06.219 But what it doesn't say which is important because I think most of us think this is a warning 00:12:07.780 --> 00:12:10.500 Maybe our faults need to appear 00:12:11.820 --> 00:12:14.700 It's not saying don't speak or people will know who you are 00:12:14.700 --> 00:12:21.380 It's not saying who don't shake anything up or we'll start to see where all the issues are and say that's okay 00:12:22.419 --> 00:12:24.099 Shake things up 00:12:24.099 --> 00:12:26.780 You know as I guess I get that story of the of the 00:12:27.059 --> 00:12:32.179 Me of me on the road and a friend that I passed I start to realize and you know that that 00:12:32.419 --> 00:12:37.260 Phrase that I'd love to take apart all the time. Oh, I was caught off-guard. I 00:12:37.780 --> 00:12:44.099 Didn't mean to say that but I was caught off-guard meaning. I wasn't paying attention and the real me came out of lightspeed 00:12:47.179 --> 00:12:53.700 My facade usually is so good. It just wasn't that quick and held up over my real me count 00:12:54.419 --> 00:13:00.219 And I keep thinking as we get into Lent what happens if we spend Lent trying to dismantle our facades 00:13:01.940 --> 00:13:06.700 What if we start to be who we are in the world, you know my Maya 00:13:07.940 --> 00:13:15.739 My least favorite part of confession theologically, it's not that I I don't run out tell people anything 00:13:16.739 --> 00:13:18.739 That that's for the book 00:13:18.739 --> 00:13:20.739 I 00:13:22.460 --> 00:13:25.900 Said I want I want to write a book called confessions of an unwed father 00:13:31.219 --> 00:13:33.820 But there's this sense that 00:13:34.820 --> 00:13:36.700 It works against itself 00:13:36.700 --> 00:13:40.659 It says you need to confess but only if you can confess 00:13:40.979 --> 00:13:44.900 To someone who will keep all your secrets so that your facade will never be damaged 00:13:45.900 --> 00:13:52.940 Let's get people to confess in a way that we're going to try and get you to confess without anyone ever really knowing who you 00:13:52.940 --> 00:13:54.020 are 00:13:54.020 --> 00:13:58.739 This is why I'll tell you in 90% of my confessions are never from holy family 00:13:59.340 --> 00:14:03.900 All the people from other parishes line up. I assume the people here are over at other parishes 00:14:03.900 --> 00:14:08.099 I have people and they rotate the different that way. No one priest has to know everything 00:14:08.859 --> 00:14:10.859 No one knows he's still 00:14:11.380 --> 00:14:13.500 As long as I get out of here unknown 00:14:14.380 --> 00:14:16.979 As long as they'll let me live a secret life in heaven 00:14:18.219 --> 00:14:21.380 Keep thinking when do we get rid of the facade? 00:14:22.460 --> 00:14:28.580 All dogs may go to heaven. No, not all but you know, but facades know 00:14:29.859 --> 00:14:33.679 What happens think of how many people depend on their facade? 00:14:34.500 --> 00:14:39.739 And there's a saying going around now that says would people show you who they are believe it 00:14:40.500 --> 00:14:42.500 and today it says and 00:14:42.820 --> 00:14:47.739 Stop making it up until you see it until you really see it. Not not your own vision 00:14:49.580 --> 00:14:56.619 Until we can get past what we're bringing to the vision we Jesus says don't judge people because 00:14:57.619 --> 00:15:05.619 He's nicer than I am which is cut. I mean, you know what Jesus said stop judging people because you're really stupid at it 00:15:06.619 --> 00:15:09.500 You're bad at judging people. You don't know what you're doing 00:15:10.500 --> 00:15:13.460 To which we say well, I'll judge you now. Oh 00:15:14.299 --> 00:15:19.179 You know, it's it's that we don't know we think we know we never have the whole picture 00:15:20.780 --> 00:15:26.099 You will never have the picture the full picture of anyone you choose to pass judgment on and 00:15:26.380 --> 00:15:34.460 What we know about people who are created in the image of God is if you ever know that well enough to see the whole picture 00:15:35.260 --> 00:15:39.020 You will no longer have any interest in passive judgment

Father Pat's message encourages deep spiritual introspection and humility. He emphasizes that our perceptions of others are often clouded by our own internal "floaters"—biases, insecurities, and emotional baggage that distort our vision. Rather than projecting judgment onto others, we are called to first examine ourselves honestly, removing the "wooden beam" from our own eye before attempting to address the "splinter" in someone else's. In doing so, we discover that much of our frustration and criticism stems not from the faults of others, but from unresolved issues within ourselves. Father Pat also challenges the facades we maintain in our lives, especially in religious practice, and invites us to embrace authenticity as a path toward true spiritual growth. He concludes with a powerful reminder: when we truly see others—clearly and compassionately—we lose the desire to judge at all. This homily begins with a practical parish announcement about the need to potentially split the overcrowded Mass into two services, which Father Pat humorously frames as “success being its own punishment.” He uses this transition to invite the community to reflect on how even in physical closeness—like having to sit closer to “sketchy” people—we are challenged to confront our judgments and perceptions. Father Pat then moves into the Gospel reading from Luke, acknowledging that while it is introduced as a parable, it reads more like a series of rhetorical questions and statements rather than a traditional narrative. He suggests that perhaps Luke, the only Gentile evangelist, misunderstood the definition of a "parable." This sets the tone for Father Pat’s central theme: we often misinterpret not just Scripture, but life, because we are not seeing clearly. The key image from the Gospel—the splinter in your brother’s eye versus the wooden beam in your own—is unpacked in a novel way. Rather than seeing it simply as hypocrisy or moral equivalence, Father Pat interprets it as a metaphor for distorted perception. Most of what bothers us about others, he says, is really about us. Our judgments are filtered through our own unresolved emotions, past experiences, and distorted expectations. When someone irritates us, at least half of that irritation comes from within. This is not just a call to be less judgmental—it’s a call to understand that we often don’t even see others clearly enough to make any judgment at all. Father Pat uses several vivid analogies and stories to illustrate his point. One is the story of trying to get someone to enjoy theater when they’re not predisposed to it. What people bring into an experience—preconceived notions, openness or resistance—shapes what they take from it. Similarly, in faith, people who are dragged to church often enter with a defiant attitude and leave unchanged, while those who come with openness are more likely to be transformed. Another story centers on a mother who raised her daughter to be fiercely independent, only to be surprised when that independence led the daughter into a religious and social lifestyle the mother disapproved of. This is a humorous but poignant example of how we often want others to be free—but only within the limits of what we ourselves find acceptable. It also illustrates how the traits we admire in ourselves can become challenging when mirrored in others. A particularly powerful metaphor is that of “floaters”—the visual disturbances that come with aging. Father Pat likens these to the invisible biases and emotions that cloud our perception of others. He recounts a personal story of being frustrated with a driver on the road, only to discover it was his best friend. Instantly, his irritation disappeared. The driver hadn’t changed—only his perception had. The implication is clear: much of what we think is external conflict is actually internal noise. Father Pat then connects this insight to broader social and spiritual dynamics. Prejudice, he suggests, is rooted in our discomfort with people we don’t know. Familiarity breeds empathy, while distance breeds judgment. When we say, “I have a friend who’s one of them,” he says, we’re not proving we’re unbiased; we’re revealing that we categorize people we don’t know. True transformation begins when we stop treating people as abstract “others” and start seeing them as individual reflections of God’s image. The homily takes a deeper theological turn when Father Pat critiques the sacrament of confession. He reflects on how even confession is often structured to preserve our facades—anonymity ensures that we remain unknown, our sins unexposed to real relational transformation. While he acknowledges the importance of confession, he questions whether its current practice truly helps us become more authentic. What would Lent look like, he asks, if we used it not to hide behind ritual but to dismantle our facades and become who we truly are? He references the reading from Sirach, which says, “When a sieve is shaken, the husks appear.” Many interpret this as a warning—watch what you say, or your faults will be revealed. But Father Pat suggests the opposite: maybe our faults need to be revealed. Maybe Lent is a time to shake the sieve, to let the husks rise, and to be seen for who we truly are. He ends by addressing the modern saying, “When people show you who they are, believe them.” But Father Pat calls us to go even deeper: don’t judge until you truly see. And you can’t truly see until you’ve removed your own distortions. Jesus tells us not to judge—not because judgment is inherently evil, but because we’re terrible at it. We never have the full picture. But if we ever did—if we ever saw someone fully and truly, through the lens of love and clarity—we would no longer want to judge them. We would only want to understand them. And in that moment, both they and we would begin to reflect the image of God more clearly.
