Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples, whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words, yet the word you hear is not mine, but that of the Father who sent me. I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have told you. Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You have heard me tell you I am going and will come back to you. If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe the gospel of the Lord. Peace be with you, Lord Jesus Christ. This last week before we get into the real end times of Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, and then there's a couple things we call the Solemnities of Orchard Time, Audubon of Christ, Corpus Christi, and we have Trinity Sunday. Before we get into those, we always have this transition. Jesus is continuing to try to get them to be ready for something new, which is one of the most difficult things anyone ever does. So many things that people say, I just think that's too hard. No, it's just too new. Things, you know, people will say to me, you look so comfortable in the pulpit. I started playing piano in public and had to stand in front of a crowd and talk and sing at the age of 13. So I mean, I've been doing this like 20 years. I mean, and when I started, I would literally come off stage and have to run to the restroom to get sick to my stomach. I would do it, it was terrible. And you know, and so was it hard? No, it was new. And new scares us to death. There's this sense where Jesus says here, whoever does not love me does not keep my words. I think this is very important. I don't think we quite see the point he's making because he's not saying, he says, whoever does love me keep my words and the Father will love him and we will come to him and we will make our dwelling with him. It does not say, and whoever does not, the Father will not love you and we will not dwell with you. It doesn't go there. What it says is, if you are really keeping the gospel, the spirit of the gospel, the word of the gospel, and remember, Jesus is referred to in this gospel, especially as the word, the word made flesh. So when he says the word, he's saying, you're gonna have to move from the word to the spirit. And how you keep the word will be how you keep the spirit. And that will only be done out of love, not out of fear, not out of panic, not out of hatred. I follow all the words, I follow all the rules because I don't want to go to hell. You're not following the word yet. You're not sensing because part of it is the motivation. It's the ability to want to change the way things are, not because I'm terrified at how bad things are, but because it could be better. I've been thinking today, there are a couple ideas of this, but I think one of the best is people who are engaged. Anyone, and we will tell them this, anyone who's getting married because they feel like their single light is broken, we want to say to them in a kind way, actually nothing. We want to say to their fiance, run the other way. Because they think this marriage are going to fix them. Make marriages that are successful are when people who say, I have found a way to be perfectly whole, single. I now, you know, I can make that better, but it doesn't mean it's broken. I hate that. If it's not broken, don't fix it. If your life isn't falling apart, don't get out of the chair. We can want to improve our lives, improve our world, build something better without somehow denigrating the way things are. But, and my suspicion is especially in modern times, the marketing technique is to make sure that you really truly believe that your life is just not going to hold together without our new toothpaste. Marketing wants to make us feel like we need something like, that's going to really make my life livable. But to do that, first we have to convince you that your life is a piece of garbage. And now we can fix it. One of the phrases I've just, another platitude that falls into this category is we'll be saying, well, is we'll be saying, well, this is as good as it gets. And that's a more positive spin. It's not, this is as good as it gets. That can lead us down really horrible pathways as well. I have two stories. I probably, I don't know if I ever told it here, but I know I've told this a few times over the years. I've tried not to tell it too often because I don't come off well. But the first story I come off better. When I'm teaching voice, when I'm trying to get someone into their high range, into their, what we call the head voice, even what they call flute extension for color tourists. When I'm trying to get them into that sound, you know, they've got this great core sound and they like it and they love it. And try to get them to do something they haven't done before is like, it's like pulling teeth, which is really a bad vocal technique. You know, it's like, you know, you just can't get someone to try something new. It'll sound strange. The universe itself will laugh at me. And I always tell them, voice lessons are where we make all of our bad sounds. Oh, well, that's where we make most of our bad sounds. We still sing and all that. Everything, anything can happen. But what I'll do is I'll get them to make, eventually, and I have to walk them through how to do it, what are the uglier sounds they have never made in their life? And if I can get them to that point where they start to sound like Kermit the Frog with a bronchial infection and a couple of crap ribs, I'll say, okay, now stay in that sound. Get it even uglier. And now that you're there, I want you to start taking the scale up. And I'll allow them to get, all of a sudden, they hit a moment because they're in this ugly space. All of a sudden, the high notes get incredible. So now all we have to do is build a bridge between the two voices. Then it's easy. But you have to get them to do something they've never done before. Maybe the way I'm doing it isn't the perfect image. I have to let go of the image I am, of how it's supposed to be done, to find what's been waiting. The story where I don't come off this well happened when I was at St. Thomas More, which was like 30 years ago, or getting close to 30 years now. At St. Thomas More, I had to go get daily contacts. Ooh, they'd just come out with daily disposable contact lenses. And I've been wearing the ones that you throw out every two weeks. And so as I go get them, she has to explain, you know, the optometrist is telling me, oh, it's very similar, and at the end of the day, you don't sleep in on the whole routine. And I go to put them in, and she goes, let me see you put them in. And I go to put them in. She goes, wait, you got that one backwards. It's flipped. So I look at it, and I go, oh, no, no. And she's sitting three feet away. I'm like, no, no, it's fine. No, it's flipped. Of course, I don't have my contact in, so I can't tell. And I said, Tamiya looks like the lip is going out. She goes, yes, that's the wrong way. What? And she says, so how long you been wearing them that way? 12 years. Come on. Because the very first technician told me it should look like a soup bowl, you know. So maybe they had weird soup bowls. I don't know. Or they just didn't know what they were doing. But that was the image I was given. And I said to her, I said, but they work fine. She goes, aren't they uncomfortable? I'm like, that's what you put up with, with hot things. For 12 years. That's as good as it gets. It recurred to me to question and say, wait, Mindy is told something wrong. Every image of God that we feel came to us from the infallible church, came to us from some infallible source, which was then passed on by at least 50 people. If you play the little telephone, you know, the gossip game. For those of you who are not my age, this is how we used to have to hold telephone. It's a, you go right on top of the icebox. There was this sort of sense that, you know, well, you know, my image of God is, and Jesus says today, gotta get rid of those easier images. Any image you had as a kid is not gonna help you over the age of 30. Because you can't conceive at the age of seven of the image of God that you're going to need as an adult. We are, you know, we have different limits and we will never outgrow the next possible vision of God because God is infinite. So there's always a better image and sometimes when we're struggling with our faith, we think, you know, when someone said, my life right now, I've got this happening and this happening and this happening and where is God in all this? And what they're trying to do is find a way to reframe their situation because it never occurs to them that they might need to reframe their image of God. Why is the old white man on a cloud to this thunderbolt not doing something about this? And they start to lose their faith in God because it can't grow. We have to get to a point where we go, wait, maybe that part that I didn't think, why would I put that on God? I preached on this a lot but it came to me relatively late in life that if God really knows the future, I can't disappoint God because I can't surprise God. I told you that a lot of times, I would love to say, I figured that out in seminary. No, no, I was trying to figure out where my dorm room was. I had different periods of life that you start to go, oh, wait now, and no one ever told me that. Do you know there's no church teaching that says we have to believe there's a single person in hell? And when you say that, people go, oh, I never heard that. I never heard that. But I've heard that person's going to hell and that person, I got those all put into the theological infallible part and started making assumptions and calling those infallible. We caught it in smaller damages. And Jesus says, I'm going to be gone. Now, he's also going to tell them in a few minutes because Jesus never wants to give them an easy, I'm going to be gone. Either way, I'll be with you always. And if you knew where I was going, you wouldn't be, you would be glad, you would be joyful. There would be reason to be joyful. You wouldn't be joyful. I mean, if your child gets the most incredible scholarship and wonderful opportunity in the world to study across the world, you're still going to be sad. You're going to be happy for the opportunity, but, you know, when they tell you that this opportunity is, you know, it's in Belgium, that's going to make people sad at some level, depending on the child. We hope, you know, a lot of them. It's okay to have this back and forth. Where is God in this? God is there. God is with Jesus on the cross. God knows where you're going to be in 500 years. God knows that everything you're going through is, he can heal you from. See, you and I live in a world where there are some wounds that just will not heal. Theology says there are some wounds that only God can't heal. And it will happen. And if God knows it's going to happen, you know, every parent knows that when you know that your child just fell and you evaluate it, you know that they're going to be fine by tomorrow, you can be sad for them because they're crying. You can't panic with them. We're going to have a panic attack. Expand the image. I'm very fond of the image that says most of us will choose familiar misery over the possibility of un-sore. Because I'm not very happy, but I know how this unhappy works. That might throw an unhappy at me that I don't know. It also might throw something amazing at you. And Jesus says, this spirit thing is going to frustrate you no end. And it's going to be better for you. And it's going to connect you to the whole world in the same way that Jesus has only connected them to one another. So we ask God to get us ready for Pentecost. To help us to secure the voice of God in that person you're pretty sure doesn't have it. To experience the voice of God in some routine that is just something that you don't like or can't figure out. To experience God where we haven't experienced God before. And to do that, we have to experience God in a way that we haven't. We are all wounded, but we don't have to live out of some brokenness. And we don't have to be mired in brokenness to want to improve things. You know, people do not go to college because high school broke. I mean, it did break some of them, but college will break them again. You know, someone said to me just last night, one of the ultrasurgeons who came out of eighth grade said, you know, I finally graduated and you know, there are a lot of crazy people in that school so next year will be better. Welcome to high school. You know, but we don't actually have to be upset with where we are. To open our minds to new images so that we can be ready for what we can't see yet. We can love the world in which we live and still want to make it better.
