Glory be to the Lord. Jesus said to his disciples, thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and then repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached in his name to all the nations beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things and behold I am sending the promise of my father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high. Then he led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands and blessed them. As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven. They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they were continually in the temple praising God. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise you Jesus. I often tell people that, you know, this is my favorite scripture, this is my favorite, this is it. But I learned early on at seminary that when it comes to my own spiritual theology in the church, that Ascension is my favorite. I wrote papers on it. The larger thesis, my scripture was on the scriptures of the Ascension, my favorite. Moral theology, the theology of the Ascension. I mean, because I think it's where we are called to be in this age is both Pentecost and Ascension and the way the two constantly come together. We are, we aren't beyond, but I mean, you know, the resurrection sort of begins, the idea of church, and then we live in Ascension and Pentecost until the final day. And what that means for us is that we are moving upward. Jesus comes down, there's a little private prayer said here at the altar that I think for me sums up a lot of it. You never hear it. There's a whole bunch of little prayers that you don't hear. And they say it's sotoboce, under the voice you're supposed to say them. And so one of them is when I pour the little drop of water into the chalice of wine. The water is supposed to represent humanity, the wine divinity. So I put a little drop in because we are absorbed into the basses of divinity, not the other way around. We're the smaller part. But the prayer is, through the mingling of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity. That Jesus comes down and takes on humanity for one purpose, to drag it back up with him at the Ascension. And why it's so funny because you'll always hear people talk about, you know, that the beginning of real salvation is in the crucifixion and the death and resurrection. And the beginning of the church is Pentecost. Ascension, at least I didn't get nailed when I did this theology, from one of theirs. Ascension is, according especially to theologians like Casper, it is the beginning of heaven. This is the birth of heaven. Humanity in the Godhead. Jesus takes humanity and when he brings that humanity back up, what do we say? What is heaven? It's where we live with God in perfect union forever. That starts with the humanity of Jesus living with God. He kind of moves out of this physical realm with us and takes the humanity with him. And the thing about humanity is, humanity always seeks more humanity. And so we are all called up with it. What Casper said that got me started on this, Walter Casper, Greek theologian in the church, that the ascension, it's not incorrect, he said, but it's a bad way. We should never tell people the ascension happened 2,000 years ago. The ascension began 2,000 years ago. And every time another member of the body of Christ has ascended, it's the ascension. And this is why in the catechism, even though it doesn't say that the people who are baptized will make it to heaven, it does say baptism is an assurance of salvation. And the way he puts it, it's that a lot of people in the church do not want to embrace this because it's too hopeful or more importantly, it gives hope to all the wrong people. And that is, he says, until every last, think what this says about hell, until every last member of the body of Christ is ascended, Christ is never fully ascended to hell. That's God's commitment to us. God's commitment is Jesus is not fully ascended until every last member of the body is. Where the head has gone, the body must follow. And that's prayer after prayer in our liturgy. And so it's this almost intense promise that God will find a way to break through to every one of us and help us to become the people who make sense in heaven. What it leaves us as a mission is to do for others what Jesus did for us. You know, Jesus came down to lift us up. If you really want to put at a missionary level, we try to word it so many ways. Well, help the poor and visit the sick and take care of one another. It is all summed up in lift people up. Everyone who comes into your orbit this week, will they leave it feeling better about themselves than when they arrived or worse? Or probably most tragically, will you have no effect on them at all? When people come into our orbit, how do we lead them? And I think religion has too long taken this, the idea that, well, what you have to do is make sure they know they're sinners. You have to make sure they know they're failing. You have to make sure they know it. No one has ever put themselves into the work of the path because someone made them feel worse about themselves. Making people feel worse about themselves will not make them better people. It's kind of the trick of parenting. And I always want to tread lightly because I know 95% of parents in this room have probably used this phrase. Were I a parent, I would have used it a lot. And we're trying to be very gentle with children. And Father John Philenbach used to say, it's a step in the right direction, but we want to go even further. Rather than, a century ago, you were a bad kid for doing that. You're bad. That's a bad person. I want a bad girl. What a bad boy. No child has ever become better because you convinced them they were bad. They might behave better when you're a guru, but convince them they're a bad person. That will not serve them well. And what we've gone to, that is the one that he questioned next was, well, you know, I'm very disappointed in you. He says, well, there's nothing wrong with them knowing that, but if they done something wrong, your disappointment is not really the point. I just want you to know you should go through your whole life. What's your moral compass? Don't disappoint mom or dad. You know how many 40-year-olds are in therapy? Because they're still trying not to disappoint mom. He said, the perfect parent, and I actually know two perfect parents in Chicago. They're almost here, Katie. They take the, without sounding this trite or this cliche, they always take the, you're better than that. You can do better. And if you do that, they're not disappointed, they're concerned. Because I think that choice is going to mess you up down the road. They're convincing them that they want to convince their children that they're good enough to invest effort in their own life. Make people feel better about themselves. No one has ever pulled themselves out of addiction because they finally felt lousy enough about themselves. They may hit rock bottom. What happens though is some voice lets them know, I deserve better than this from me. Something picks them up. We have to be a people who find ways that we can, sometimes we have to say to someone, you know, this sort of behavior really hurts me, this, that, and the other. There are ways to say that by saying, you know, I'm only saying this because of how much I value our friendship and I know that this is a little thing and, you know, I just want you to be aware of it. There are ways that we invite people in rather than beating them down. You know, the example I want to tattle on myself all the time with is, you know, when you're in traffic and you go around someone because they're going slow. And I'm going to make this gentle. Let's assume they're going under the speed limit when I say they're going slow. And there's a lane. There is nothing wrong with saying they're going this speed and I want to go this speed. You go around them. That's what you're supposed to do. But every once in a while when you've had to stay behind them for too long and you go around them, you have to do this to me. Because it's not about me going faster. It's about me going faster and them knowing that I disappointed them. I need them to know that I don't think, well, why? Because as soon as I make them feel lousy about themselves, maybe they'll become better people. We don't make anyone better by making them feel worse. Yes, we should have regret over things we've done, but it turns quickly into shame over who we are and that will never lead us to heaven. Try to find the scriptures where Jesus makes people feel bad about themselves. The only people he goes after are religious leaders who are making other people feel bad about themselves. It's the only kind everywhere who do that. And so I think when people come in to our orbit for a while, how good are we at lifting them up? This irritating couple in Chicago, John and Patty, they're long beyond parity at this point, but he was an ER attending doctor and that's to work and it's tough on a marriage. But he was really good. You know, if John came home late, it was for one reason and that was, I mean, it was an absolute emergency. He couldn't, he was never one of those that couldn't hand off something to the next doctor if he was able to. There was no ego involved. If it was something where it was just, it was urgent. So he was never eight hours late. He was never, I mean, he might be a little late. And Patty always said to me, oh, every four weeks or so he is late. It was like for an ER doc. So I have to tell you that because I want you to know this is not like, oh, that's how once a spouse just abuses the other. No, no. He was very good about it. He was all mode. He got, if he was going to be home for dinner, he was home for dinner. And she said about three times a year he really could make it out. Unfortunately, one of those times was his 10th anniversary with, you know, eight dinner guests at home and his wife, toasty and empty chair. He said to me and he said, you know, it's the first time in my life I, he's cause they have great relationship. He goes, I look forward to going home. It's the first time in my entire marriage. I did not want to go home. He said, I just knew, I knew she was crushed. I knew she was going to be mad. I knew I deserved it. But clearly this was not something he did all the time. So he walks in and this is her chins. At that moment, she can either bring him to his knees or she can lift him up. And he came in and he said, you know, let me just say, and she said, let me stop you. You rarely do this and you can't control when it happens. And if that's the price I pay for being married to a hero, so be it. Why not experience the power of lifting Sonata? Why not experience that power? You know, that I'm going to, I'm going to let them know what's wrong with God. There's, there's no real power in that. There's never enough of it. It never feeds us. We can never be enough. We can never be been enough to enough people. I mean, I tried and I screwed just it will never satisfy me. You know, it's what it means to do something like that and, and, and move on. I think for the Ascension this week, so that we're really ready to receive the spirit. Everyone who has a meaningful interaction with you, ask yourself, is there a way to help them to lead feeling better about who they are then rather than, than worse, you know? Oh, I, I just messed up. Welcome to the club. Oh, good, good. We're closer now. You know, the last thing I need is a perfect friend. You know, I mean, how do we help people feel better about themselves? We don't have to lie. People mess up. People mess up. We don't have to pretend they didn't mess up. We can see what is good in them. Jesus comes down and as I've told you dozens of times, he gets nothing for himself out of coming down and suffering. He, he starts this whole thing as God. There is no upgrade. He's not now God point two. There's no upgrade. He does it to lift others up. If we're going to follow Jesus, we will start by lifting people up and people who come to us for whatever reason will leave feeling better about themselves rather than worse. WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.280 The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. 00:00:05.280 --> 00:00:09.600 Glory be to the Lord. Jesus said to his disciples, 00:00:11.279 --> 00:00:14.960 thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day 00:00:15.520 --> 00:00:21.360 and then repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached in his name to all the nations 00:00:21.360 --> 00:00:27.760 beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things and behold I am sending the promise 00:00:27.760 --> 00:00:33.840 of my father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high. 00:00:35.360 --> 00:00:42.000 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands and blessed them. As he blessed them 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:48.479 he parted from them and was taken up to heaven. They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem 00:00:48.479 --> 00:00:55.599 with great joy. And they were continually in the temple praising God. The Gospel of the Lord. 00:00:56.159 --> 00:00:58.159 Praise you Jesus. 00:01:04.879 --> 00:01:09.040 I often tell people that, you know, this is my favorite scripture, this is my favorite, 00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:17.519 this is it. But I learned early on at seminary that when it comes to my own spiritual theology 00:01:17.519 --> 00:01:26.879 in the church, that Ascension is my favorite. I wrote papers on it. The larger thesis, 00:01:26.879 --> 00:01:31.839 my scripture was on the scriptures of the Ascension, my favorite. Moral theology, 00:01:33.440 --> 00:01:40.400 the theology of the Ascension. I mean, because I think it's where we are called to be in this age 00:01:41.279 --> 00:01:50.879 is both Pentecost and Ascension and the way the two constantly come together. 00:01:52.559 --> 00:01:59.120 We are, we aren't beyond, but I mean, you know, the resurrection sort of begins, 00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:04.319 the idea of church, and then we live in Ascension and Pentecost until the final day. 00:02:05.120 --> 00:02:15.600 And what that means for us is that we are moving upward. Jesus comes down, there's a little private 00:02:15.600 --> 00:02:23.199 prayer said here at the altar that I think for me sums up a lot of it. You never hear it. There's 00:02:23.199 --> 00:02:28.160 a whole bunch of little prayers that you don't hear. And they say it's sotoboce, under the voice 00:02:28.160 --> 00:02:34.160 you're supposed to say them. And so one of them is when I pour the little drop of water into the 00:02:34.160 --> 00:02:41.839 chalice of wine. The water is supposed to represent humanity, the wine divinity. So I put a little drop 00:02:41.839 --> 00:02:47.679 in because we are absorbed into the basses of divinity, not the other way around. We're the 00:02:47.679 --> 00:02:53.279 smaller part. But the prayer is, through the mingling of this water and wine, may we come to 00:02:53.279 --> 00:02:59.679 share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity. That Jesus 00:02:59.679 --> 00:03:08.639 comes down and takes on humanity for one purpose, to drag it back up with him at the Ascension. 00:03:09.679 --> 00:03:16.559 And why it's so funny because you'll always hear people talk about, you know, that the beginning 00:03:16.559 --> 00:03:23.360 of real salvation is in the crucifixion and the death and resurrection. And the beginning of the 00:03:23.360 --> 00:03:29.679 church is Pentecost. Ascension, at least I didn't get nailed when I did this theology, 00:03:29.679 --> 00:03:36.479 from one of theirs. Ascension is, according especially to theologians like Casper, 00:03:38.559 --> 00:03:47.839 it is the beginning of heaven. This is the birth of heaven. Humanity in the Godhead. Jesus takes 00:03:47.839 --> 00:03:52.720 humanity and when he brings that humanity back up, what do we say? What is heaven? 00:03:52.720 --> 00:03:59.119 It's where we live with God in perfect union forever. That starts with the humanity of Jesus 00:03:59.839 --> 00:04:07.520 living with God. He kind of moves out of this physical realm with us and takes the humanity 00:04:07.520 --> 00:04:13.279 with him. And the thing about humanity is, humanity always seeks more humanity. 00:04:14.639 --> 00:04:19.519 And so we are all called up with it. What Casper said that got me started on this, 00:04:20.160 --> 00:04:28.880 Walter Casper, Greek theologian in the church, that the ascension, it's not incorrect, he said, 00:04:28.880 --> 00:04:33.359 but it's a bad way. We should never tell people the ascension happened 2,000 years ago. 00:04:34.079 --> 00:04:41.839 The ascension began 2,000 years ago. And every time another member of the body of Christ has 00:04:41.839 --> 00:04:47.119 ascended, it's the ascension. And this is why in the catechism, even though it doesn't say that 00:04:47.119 --> 00:04:51.679 the people who are baptized will make it to heaven, it does say baptism is an assurance 00:04:52.399 --> 00:04:58.880 of salvation. And the way he puts it, it's that a lot of people in the church do not want to 00:04:59.679 --> 00:05:07.040 embrace this because it's too hopeful or more importantly, it gives hope to all the wrong 00:05:07.040 --> 00:05:14.559 people. And that is, he says, until every last, think what this says about hell, 00:05:14.559 --> 00:05:19.839 until every last member of the body of Christ is ascended, Christ is never fully ascended to hell. 00:05:22.559 --> 00:05:31.519 That's God's commitment to us. God's commitment is Jesus is not fully ascended until every last 00:05:31.519 --> 00:05:37.839 member of the body is. Where the head has gone, the body must follow. And that's prayer after 00:05:37.920 --> 00:05:46.000 prayer in our liturgy. And so it's this almost intense promise that God will find a way to 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:53.200 break through to every one of us and help us to become the people who make sense in heaven. 00:05:53.760 --> 00:06:00.000 What it leaves us as a mission is to do for others what Jesus did for us. 00:06:00.959 --> 00:06:09.200 You know, Jesus came down to lift us up. If you really want to put at a missionary level, 00:06:09.920 --> 00:06:15.679 we try to word it so many ways. Well, help the poor and visit the sick and take care of one 00:06:15.679 --> 00:06:24.959 another. It is all summed up in lift people up. Everyone who comes into your orbit this week, 00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:31.519 will they leave it feeling better about themselves than when they arrived or worse? 00:06:32.399 --> 00:06:36.000 Or probably most tragically, will you have no effect on them at all? 00:06:38.320 --> 00:06:44.320 When people come into our orbit, how do we lead them? And I think religion has too long taken this, 00:06:44.320 --> 00:06:48.399 the idea that, well, what you have to do is make sure they know they're sinners. You have to make 00:06:48.640 --> 00:06:53.679 sure they know they're failing. You have to make sure they know it. No one has ever 00:06:59.359 --> 00:07:05.760 put themselves into the work of the path because someone made them feel worse about themselves. 00:07:06.720 --> 00:07:10.320 Making people feel worse about themselves will not make them better people. 00:07:11.679 --> 00:07:15.920 It's kind of the trick of parenting. And I always want to tread lightly because I know 00:07:16.880 --> 00:07:22.480 95% of parents in this room have probably used this phrase. 00:07:24.160 --> 00:07:26.320 Were I a parent, I would have used it a lot. 00:07:28.559 --> 00:07:33.839 And we're trying to be very gentle with children. And Father John Philenbach used to say, 00:07:33.839 --> 00:07:38.320 it's a step in the right direction, but we want to go even further. Rather than, 00:07:40.799 --> 00:07:45.839 a century ago, you were a bad kid for doing that. You're bad. That's a bad person. I want a bad 00:07:45.839 --> 00:07:52.320 girl. What a bad boy. No child has ever become better because you convinced them they were bad. 00:07:53.839 --> 00:07:58.799 They might behave better when you're a guru, but convince them they're a bad person. 00:07:59.760 --> 00:08:05.119 That will not serve them well. And what we've gone to, that is the one that he questioned next was, 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:10.079 well, you know, I'm very disappointed in you. He says, well, there's nothing wrong with them 00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:15.600 knowing that, but if they done something wrong, your disappointment is not really the point. 00:08:16.239 --> 00:08:22.000 I just want you to know you should go through your whole life. What's your moral compass? 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:25.519 Don't disappoint mom or dad. You know how many 40-year-olds are in therapy? 00:08:27.839 --> 00:08:33.760 Because they're still trying not to disappoint mom. He said, the perfect parent, and I actually 00:08:33.760 --> 00:08:38.400 know two perfect parents in Chicago. They're almost here, Katie. 00:08:38.719 --> 00:08:49.039 They take the, without sounding this trite or this cliche, they always take the, 00:08:49.039 --> 00:08:55.679 you're better than that. You can do better. And if you do that, they're not disappointed, 00:08:55.679 --> 00:08:59.919 they're concerned. Because I think that choice is going to mess you up down the road. 00:09:00.559 --> 00:09:06.320 They're convincing them that they want to convince their children that they're good 00:09:06.320 --> 00:09:13.119 enough to invest effort in their own life. Make people feel better about themselves. 00:09:13.119 --> 00:09:18.400 No one has ever pulled themselves out of addiction because they finally felt lousy 00:09:18.400 --> 00:09:24.239 enough about themselves. They may hit rock bottom. What happens though is some voice 00:09:24.799 --> 00:09:34.479 lets them know, I deserve better than this from me. Something picks them up. 00:09:34.479 --> 00:09:39.440 We have to be a people who find ways that we can, sometimes we have to say to someone, 00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:43.039 you know, this sort of behavior really hurts me, this, that, and the other. There are ways to say 00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:47.840 that by saying, you know, I'm only saying this because of how much I value our friendship and 00:09:47.840 --> 00:09:51.440 I know that this is a little thing and, you know, I just want you to be aware of it. 00:09:52.320 --> 00:09:56.799 There are ways that we invite people in rather than beating them down. 00:09:58.400 --> 00:10:02.880 You know, the example I want to tattle on myself all the time with is, you know, 00:10:02.880 --> 00:10:06.320 when you're in traffic and you go around someone because they're going slow. 00:10:07.919 --> 00:10:12.640 And I'm going to make this gentle. Let's assume they're going under the speed limit when I say 00:10:12.640 --> 00:10:20.239 they're going slow. And there's a lane. There is nothing wrong with saying they're going this 00:10:20.239 --> 00:10:23.679 speed and I want to go this speed. You go around them. That's what you're supposed to do. 00:10:24.640 --> 00:10:27.840 But every once in a while when you've had to stay behind them for too long and you go around 00:10:27.840 --> 00:10:35.119 them, you have to do this to me. Because it's not about me going faster. It's about me going 00:10:35.119 --> 00:10:41.119 faster and them knowing that I disappointed them. I need them to know that I don't think, well, 00:10:41.119 --> 00:10:46.320 why? Because as soon as I make them feel lousy about themselves, maybe they'll become better 00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:55.359 people. We don't make anyone better by making them feel worse. Yes, we should have regret over 00:10:55.359 --> 00:11:01.520 things we've done, but it turns quickly into shame over who we are and that will never lead 00:11:01.520 --> 00:11:08.640 us to heaven. Try to find the scriptures where Jesus makes people feel bad about themselves. 00:11:08.640 --> 00:11:12.719 The only people he goes after are religious leaders who are making other people feel bad 00:11:12.719 --> 00:11:19.359 about themselves. It's the only kind everywhere who do that. And so I think when people come in 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:29.280 to our orbit for a while, how good are we at lifting them up? This irritating couple in Chicago, 00:11:31.039 --> 00:11:39.280 John and Patty, they're long beyond parity at this point, but he was an ER attending 00:11:39.280 --> 00:11:45.039 doctor and that's to work and it's tough on a marriage. But he was really good. 00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:53.280 You know, if John came home late, it was for one reason and that was, 00:11:54.400 --> 00:11:59.840 I mean, it was an absolute emergency. He couldn't, he was never one of those that couldn't hand off 00:11:59.840 --> 00:12:06.000 something to the next doctor if he was able to. There was no ego involved. If it was something 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:11.440 where it was just, it was urgent. So he was never eight hours late. He was never, I mean, 00:12:12.080 --> 00:12:19.280 he might be a little late. And Patty always said to me, oh, every four weeks or so he is late. 00:12:19.280 --> 00:12:24.640 It was like for an ER doc. So I have to tell you that because I want you to know this is not like, 00:12:24.640 --> 00:12:31.520 oh, that's how once a spouse just abuses the other. No, no. He was very good about it. He was all 00:12:31.520 --> 00:12:34.479 mode. He got, if he was going to be home for dinner, he was home for dinner. 00:12:35.440 --> 00:12:41.919 And she said about three times a year he really could make it out. Unfortunately, 00:12:41.919 --> 00:12:46.400 one of those times was his 10th anniversary with, you know, eight dinner guests at home 00:12:47.679 --> 00:12:53.440 and his wife, toasty and empty chair. He said to me and he said, you know, it's the first time 00:12:53.440 --> 00:12:57.599 in my life I, he's cause they have great relationship. He goes, I look forward to 00:12:57.599 --> 00:13:04.640 going home. It's the first time in my entire marriage. I did not want to go home. He said, 00:13:04.640 --> 00:13:10.640 I just knew, I knew she was crushed. I knew she was going to be mad. I knew I deserved it. 00:13:12.400 --> 00:13:17.440 But clearly this was not something he did all the time. So he walks in and this is her chins. 00:13:18.880 --> 00:13:26.640 At that moment, she can either bring him to his knees or she can lift him up. And he came in and 00:13:26.640 --> 00:13:33.679 he said, you know, let me just say, and she said, let me stop you. You rarely do this and you can't 00:13:33.679 --> 00:13:38.000 control when it happens. And if that's the price I pay for being married to a hero, so be it. 00:13:41.119 --> 00:13:44.000 Why not experience the power of lifting Sonata? 00:13:45.599 --> 00:13:49.919 Why not experience that power? You know, that I'm going to, I'm going to let them know what's 00:13:49.919 --> 00:13:54.960 wrong with God. There's, there's no real power in that. There's never enough of it. It never feeds 00:13:54.960 --> 00:14:01.599 us. We can never be enough. We can never be been enough to enough people. I mean, I tried and I 00:14:01.599 --> 00:14:10.080 screwed just it will never satisfy me. You know, it's what it means to do something like that 00:14:10.960 --> 00:14:18.559 and, and, and move on. I think for the Ascension this week, so that we're really ready to receive 00:14:18.559 --> 00:14:26.799 the spirit. Everyone who has a meaningful interaction with you, ask yourself, is there a way 00:14:27.440 --> 00:14:34.400 to help them to lead feeling better about who they are then rather than, than worse, you know? 00:14:35.119 --> 00:14:41.840 Oh, I, I just messed up. Welcome to the club. Oh, good, good. We're closer now. 00:14:42.799 --> 00:14:45.119 You know, the last thing I need is a perfect friend. 00:14:47.599 --> 00:14:52.559 You know, I mean, how do we help people feel better about themselves? We don't have to lie. 00:14:52.559 --> 00:14:56.640 People mess up. People mess up. We don't have to pretend they didn't mess up. 00:14:58.320 --> 00:15:04.479 We can see what is good in them. Jesus comes down and as I've told you dozens of times, 00:15:04.479 --> 00:15:12.640 he gets nothing for himself out of coming down and suffering. He, he starts this whole thing 00:15:12.640 --> 00:15:21.599 as God. There is no upgrade. He's not now God point two. There's no upgrade. He does it to 00:15:21.599 --> 00:15:27.919 lift others up. If we're going to follow Jesus, we will start by lifting people up and people 00:15:27.919 --> 00:15:35.359 who come to us for whatever reason will leave feeling better about themselves rather than worse. 00:15:36.320 --> 00:15:44.239 The first makes us feel temporarily a little powerful. The second converts others to the love 00:15:44.239 --> 00:15:48.159 of Christ.

Father Pat’s message centers on the theological and spiritual significance of the Ascension of Christ, which he considers the most profound mystery within Christian doctrine. He teaches that the Ascension is not a past event but an ongoing divine action in which humanity is continually being lifted toward union with God. Christ’s raising of human nature into the Godhead is not just symbolic—it inaugurates heaven itself. As such, our mission as followers of Christ is to emulate his redemptive work by lifting others up, affirming their dignity, and helping them recognize their worth and possibility for transformation. True discipleship, according to Father Pat, is not about condemnation or guilt but about hope, encouragement, and the relentless invitation to rise. Father Pat develops a rich theological reflection on the Ascension as not merely a historical moment, but as the beginning of heaven itself. Drawing on the insights of theologians like Walter Kasper, he emphasizes that the Ascension marks the moment when Jesus, fully divine and fully human, brings humanity into the divine life. This is not an isolated event from 2,000 years ago but an ongoing process wherein Christ continues to draw the human race into the heart of God. Father Pat stresses that Jesus' return to the Father with human nature is the foundational act of salvation’s completion; it is the divine guarantee that we, too, are meant for heaven. The Ascension reveals not only where Christ has gone, but where we are all destined, as members of his body. This theological truth carries profound pastoral implications. Father Pat challenges a spiritual culture often focused on guilt, shame, and exposure of sin. Instead, he invites Christians to reimagine their mission as one of uplifting others. He critiques the tendency within religious communities and even parenting to correct by inducing shame or disappointment. Instead of saying, “You’re bad,” or “I’m disappointed in you,” the more Christ-like approach is, “You’re better than this.” This reflects the belief that people grow not by being diminished, but by being reminded of their inherent goodness and potential. God’s salvific work is rooted in love that elevates rather than condemns. Jesus did not come to expose our unworthiness, but to affirm our belovedness and call us higher. Father Pat also reflects on liturgical symbolism, such as the quiet prayer said when mixing water and wine at the altar. The drop of water symbolizes humanity being absorbed into divinity—underscoring that salvation is not God becoming more human, but humanity being taken up into the divine. This act is not merely liturgical poetry; it is the core of the Ascension’s meaning. Jesus came down not to remain among us physically forever, but to bring us with him into eternal communion with God. Heaven, then, is not a distant reward but a present, unfolding reality that begins with Christ and continues as each of us is drawn into divine life. The call, then, is to imitate Christ’s lifting of humanity. Father Pat insists that real spiritual power lies not in judgment but in encouragement. He shares stories—both humorous and poignant—showing how small acts of grace, like a forgiving spouse or a kind friend, can embody the Ascension’s spirit. Even something as mundane as a traffic encounter becomes a moment to choose between petty superiority or grace. He asks us to reflect: when people leave our presence, do they feel better about themselves—or worse? Do we help them recognize their capacity for growth, or do we burden them with shame? Ultimately, Father Pat’s message is a call to live Pentecost and Ascension together: to be filled with the Spirit and to lift others as Christ lifted us. The Ascension is not about Jesus leaving us—it’s about him drawing us with him into the life of God. Our task is to continue that mission, to embody the hope of the Gospel by affirming the dignity, worth, and divine destiny of every person we encounter. To follow Jesus, then, is to be a people who lift others up.
