Glory to you, O Lord. On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked where the disciples were, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace, I'll be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus. So during the season of Easter, this gospel kind of serves as a bookend. You know, the second, the right way, we have the Easter readings, and then the very next week we get this reading. This is the reading for the second week of Easter. It goes on, it continues into the Doubting Thomas story. But it starts with this. It's called Little Pentecost. It is where Jesus breathes on them the Holy Spirit. Now, when we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, we're celebrating this much bigger dispersion, and of course, also this promise that the Spirit is going to cover the face of the earth. That first one is, it kind of cuts its own feet out from under it. The whole point of going to the Spirit is, instead of just a few people getting to know Jesus, everyone gets to know the Spirit. Well, in that first one, he only breathes it on the same people who already knew him. So it's sort of the transitional Pentecost, getting ready for this larger moment where the Spirit is going to be coming upon us in a widespread sense. What Luke has done, as Luke and Matthew do throughout their Gospels, is they want to write these in such ways that they untangle and kind of get rid of certain Old Testament stories and dynamics. So, you know, the fall of sin becomes redemption and all of these sorts of things. This is the overturning of the Tower of Babel. In the Tower of Babel, you've got a bunch of people whose arrogance makes them decide, we've got God figured out. We're going to build a tower to heaven and get there ourselves. Who needs God when men can build towers? So, they build their tower. They start together and it takes them about five minutes until all of a sudden, shockingly, a bunch of people who think they know God can't understand each other. The minute we know everything, we're talking too much and listening too little and no one understands everyone. Now, the mythology of it is God comes down and touches their tongues and all of the languages are created. Now, that is clearly a very mythologically laden story. No one thinks that that's how languages came about. Every linguist's head in the world blew up. You know, obviously, one angel with a lot of accents got Italian, Spanish, and French all at the same time. So, we know that that's not right. But the actual story is people came together for a project because they understood each other. But because it was, we're going to be the ones that do this without any recognition, that God gets us to heaven, that others help us to create all these things. You can see it was a whole, you know, as we used to say, it was all chiefs. Everyone in it was probably, they could not understand each other. Well, they stopped trying. And so, you fast forward to Luke's telling of the Pentecost story. This is not people raising up to God. This is God coming down to people, both in the incarnation of Jesus, you know, and now the spirit of God comes down to us. God reaches down to us. You and I will never get to heaven on our own merits. And when we think we do, we start splintering the church into a million factions. Because if I'm getting to heaven on my own, it puts me in a much better position to decide virtually or wrong. If I'm getting to heaven as pure gift, it becomes a little harder for me to say, you know, this is a pure gift from God. You just don't get one. God just likes me more. You should say personally, just us a few. I think of all the things in the world, you should say personally, it's someone not liking, you know. What do they not like about me? Just you. In general, you know. So, at Pentecost, God comes down to us. And what happens? People who couldn't understand one another now can. You know, they undo that dynamic of the Tower of Babel. When you and I decide we're going to get ourselves to God, we will create misunderstanding where there used to be understanding. When we start to understand that God comes to us as a gift, and that we didn't deserve it, and we don't earn it, all of a sudden, you know, all of a sudden, when we weren't understanding people, we can. Because it puts us in a place of great humility. Even the Eucharistic prayers, I'm not wild about the new translations that came out 10 years ago. Eventually, I'll have to stop saying new, but not that. When those translations came out that last night, you know, that we may merit to be co-heirs. Well, the problem is, the beginning of the sentence happened, I think, about 40 minutes earlier in that prayer. And you forget that it's saying, because Jesus does this, and Jesus does this, we will merit it. It's not that you and I earned it on our own. How do we get into heaven? What do we need to do to get into heaven? That's how we got into heaven. The cross. You and I didn't do it. And as much as we hate to think of ourselves as charity cases, it's the only way in nowadays. So welcome to the charity case club. Another fascinating thing about the way Luke tells his story, he's really brilliant in it, in this, in Acts. He tells us that even though, you know, it's that same, he wants to tie it to the Tower of Babel, so he does say, oh, you know, the Spirit touches their tongues, he words it exactly like the Tower of Babel. But then, no one says, they're speaking our language. It's not the experience of anyone in the whole place. At the Tower of Babel, everyone's talking in new languages and no one can understand because everyone's talking in new languages. This one, the miracle is not the tongues, it's the ears. This one, it says, how is it we're hearing that in our own language? How is it we're... So I don't want you to think that someone who's touched with the Spirit speaks and like 50 languages come out at once. How is it we're hearing what they say in our language? Well, it's amazing how much understanding can happen if we're interested. I mean, kid, there are people who speak English in America who can actually understand people from Glasgow. If they'll lean in and listen. You know, at what point is it not the same language? No. Sometimes the difference between Colorado and Glasgow is not nearly as large as the difference between New York and Texas. And that's just an accent. What does it mean to understand? It means to be willing to lean in and understand. The Tower of Babel is a bunch of people who have decided they know what to say and Pentecost is a bunch of people who have learned how to listen. So one sort of nurtures understanding and the other nurtures confusion. So we're caught on this journey always as community. We're caught between Babel and Pentecost. We're caught in that dynamic that says, how do we lean in and listen a little more? Because the minute we do it with someone, our ability changes completely. You know, we have a lot of times I hear people say, I just thought I had an accent. You know, they're at a church where someone's from another country. They have an accent and I just can't understand them. What's fascinating is I know many of the, it depends on the priest. Some of them are very gifted with languages and some are not. That's not necessarily the requisite of being a priest. But what I do notice is, if they work at relating with the people and if they build relationships, if their accent doesn't improve one bit in four years, people start to understand. Well, they get used to the way he talks. Why? Because they're interested enough and it happens the other way around. There are priests who come in and say, I'm sorry, I just don't understand. And I have to say, but you're from Colorado and so are they. No, I mean, but it can be that. Well, I just don't understand. I just don't. And it's always them. I don't understand them. Yes, you don't understand. We have to be a people who work to be open to the Pentecost spirit or we will inevitably fall into the tower of battle. We will become a people who cannot understand each other because it's all about expressing myself and not really hearing. There used to be a technique. I'm sure they still use it, but it was kind of new and shiny in the 80s and 90s in psychodynamic theory and especially in what was called Valon systemic family therapy, which is what I studied. And they would always have you say, now remember in communication, when a couple is talking in a couple's counseling or in family counseling, before someone responds to something, you make them say, wait, wait, before you respond, what did they just say? You make them repeat in their own words what the other person just said. And until they get used to the irritating question that you're going to ask each time, they'll tell you exactly what of the first half of what someone said. They only heard the first half. Why? Because they spent the rest of the time formulating their response. And the minute we're formulating our response, we're no longer listening. We actually have to, you know, but I'm going to forget. I'm going to forget what they said that I wanted to respond to. Forgetting your response is not nearly as important as hearing everything they had to say before my mouth just flies open and all sorts of stuff comes out. You know, to learn to say, okay, listen to everything. I grew up in a family. I used to tell people I grew up in a family all of us, and I still struggle with it. We all have a horrible, horrible habit of interrupting each other. I mean, six boys, who could have seen that coming? You know, but we all cut each other off before we're done with a thought. And I used to tell people, oh, my gosh. We just, we interrupt. We just interrupt, and that's not the problem. We don't listen. That's the problem. We interrupt. Before you ever interrupt someone, you've decided to stop listening. And head-to-cost is, how do we open our ears before we open our mouth? No. I remember, that was one of my mother's favorite sayings, and I don't want to shock the new generation, but my mother, once in a great while, as wonderful as we were, may have resorted to backhanding us, now's the case. And of all the things they did, that didn't ruin me, the other things did. But the thing I'll remember, I think I got, she said, I've told you a hundred times, it is always more important, you always open your ears first, always. And I said, even when eating? I was a delightful child. So, you know, but there's that sense where we have to start to say, how interested are we in one another? I remember at my last parish, I can't remember what we were talking about, but I said, you know, a lot of people in a parish don't know each other. A lot of people will say, you know, I go there and I know no one, I haven't met anyone yet. And the answer that is appropriate to give, if you can find a nice way to say it, is as soon as you're interested, you will. As soon as everybody else is interested enough in me, I can belong. No, no. You have to be interested enough in them. And you'll get to know people. And so we have all these anxieties about going out and getting to know people, because we're so worried about how we're going to be received. And the spirit comes down and says, the trick is, start receiving them and forget about how you're going to be received. That's their job. You be open to receiving who they are. And a bunch of individuals will become a community. And when they really deeply open themselves to the spirit, a community starts to become the church. We're called to try harder to move from that power of babble and open our ears more to one another. And I'm finding more and more, I thought it would happen the other way around. I always thought, as soon as I found inspiration, it turns out that if we open our ears first, often it is the heart that will fall.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 2.0, WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.000 The Lord be with you. 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:04.000 And with your spirit. 00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:06.000 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. 00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:08.000 Glory to you, O Lord. 00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:13.000 On the evening of that first day of the week, 00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:15.000 when the doors were locked where the disciples were, 00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:18.000 Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, 00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:20.000 Peace be with you. 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:24.000 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:27.000 The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:31.000 Jesus said to them again, Peace, I'll be with you. 00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:35.000 As the Father has sent me, so I send you. 00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:38.000 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:40.000 Receive the Holy Spirit, 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:43.000 whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, 00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:46.000 and whose sins you retain are retained. 00:00:47.000 --> 00:00:49.000 The Gospel of the Lord. 00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:52.000 Praise to you, Lord Jesus. 00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:03.000 So during the season of Easter, this gospel kind of serves as a bookend. 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:06.000 You know, the second, the right way, we have the Easter readings, 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:08.000 and then the very next week we get this reading. 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:12.000 This is the reading for the second week of Easter. 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:16.000 It goes on, it continues into the Doubting Thomas story. 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:18.000 But it starts with this. 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:20.000 It's called Little Pentecost. 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:26.000 It is where Jesus breathes on them the Holy Spirit. 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:28.000 Now, when we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:31.000 we're celebrating this much bigger dispersion, 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:34.000 and of course, also this promise that the Spirit 00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:37.000 is going to cover the face of the earth. 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:43.000 That first one is, it kind of cuts its own feet out from under it. 00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:46.000 The whole point of going to the Spirit is, 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:49.000 instead of just a few people getting to know Jesus, 00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:51.000 everyone gets to know the Spirit. 00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:54.000 Well, in that first one, he only breathes it on the same people who already knew him. 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:57.000 So it's sort of the transitional Pentecost, 00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:00.000 getting ready for this larger moment 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:07.000 where the Spirit is going to be coming upon us in a widespread sense. 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:13.000 What Luke has done, as Luke and Matthew do throughout their Gospels, 00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:17.000 is they want to write these in such ways 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:21.000 that they untangle and kind of get rid of 00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:25.000 certain Old Testament stories and dynamics. 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:28.000 So, you know, the fall of sin becomes redemption 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:30.000 and all of these sorts of things. 00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:34.000 This is the overturning of the Tower of Babel. 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:37.000 In the Tower of Babel, you've got a bunch of people 00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:39.000 whose arrogance makes them decide, 00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:41.000 we've got God figured out. 00:02:41.000 --> 00:02:44.000 We're going to build a tower to heaven and get there ourselves. 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:48.000 Who needs God when men can build towers? 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:51.000 So, they build their tower. 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:54.000 They start together and it takes them about five minutes 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:56.000 until all of a sudden, shockingly, 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:58.000 a bunch of people who think they know God 00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:01.000 can't understand each other. 00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:03.000 The minute we know everything, 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:06.000 we're talking too much and listening too little 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:08.000 and no one understands everyone. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:12.000 Now, the mythology of it is God comes down and touches their tongues 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:15.000 and all of the languages are created. 00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:20.000 Now, that is clearly a very mythologically laden story. 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:24.000 No one thinks that that's how languages came about. 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:28.000 Every linguist's head in the world blew up. 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:31.000 You know, obviously, one angel with a lot of accents 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:35.000 got Italian, Spanish, and French all at the same time. 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:37.000 So, we know that that's not right. 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:42.000 But the actual story is people came together for a project 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:45.000 because they understood each other. 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:48.000 But because it was, we're going to be the ones that do this 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:52.000 without any recognition, that God gets us to heaven, 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:55.000 that others help us to create all these things. 00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:58.000 You can see it was a whole, you know, as we used to say, 00:03:58.000 --> 00:04:01.000 it was all chiefs. 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:03.000 Everyone in it was probably, 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:05.000 they could not understand each other. 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:09.000 Well, they stopped trying. 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:14.000 And so, you fast forward to Luke's telling of the Pentecost story. 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:17.000 This is not people raising up to God. 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:20.000 This is God coming down to people, 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:24.000 both in the incarnation of Jesus, you know, 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:28.000 and now the spirit of God comes down to us. 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:31.000 God reaches down to us. 00:04:31.000 --> 00:04:35.000 You and I will never get to heaven on our own merits. 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:37.000 And when we think we do, 00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:42.000 we start splintering the church into a million factions. 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:45.000 Because if I'm getting to heaven on my own, 00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:49.000 it puts me in a much better position to decide virtually or wrong. 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:53.000 If I'm getting to heaven as pure gift, 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:56.000 it becomes a little harder for me to say, 00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:59.000 you know, this is a pure gift from God. 00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:02.000 You just don't get one. 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:04.000 God just likes me more. 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:07.000 You should say personally, 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:09.000 just us a few. 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:11.000 I think of all the things in the world, 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:14.000 you should say personally, it's someone not liking, you know. 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:16.000 What do they not like about me? 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:18.000 Just you. 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:20.000 In general, you know. 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:23.000 So, at Pentecost, God comes down to us. 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:25.000 And what happens? 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:30.000 People who couldn't understand one another now can. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:35.000 You know, they undo that dynamic of the Tower of Babel. 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:38.000 When you and I decide we're going to get ourselves to God, 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:42.000 we will create misunderstanding where there used to be understanding. 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:46.000 When we start to understand that God comes to us as a gift, 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:49.000 and that we didn't deserve it, and we don't earn it, 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:54.000 all of a sudden, you know, all of a sudden, 00:05:54.000 --> 00:05:57.000 when we weren't understanding people, we can. 00:05:57.000 --> 00:05:59.000 Because it puts us in a place of great humility. 00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:01.000 Even the Eucharistic prayers, 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:04.000 I'm not wild about the new translations that came out 10 years ago. 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:07.000 Eventually, I'll have to stop saying new, but not that. 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:11.000 When those translations came out that last night, 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:14.000 you know, that we may merit to be co-heirs. 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:17.000 Well, the problem is, the beginning of the sentence 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:21.000 happened, I think, about 40 minutes earlier in that prayer. 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:23.000 And you forget that it's saying, 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:27.000 because Jesus does this, and Jesus does this, we will merit it. 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:31.000 It's not that you and I earned it on our own. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:32.000 How do we get into heaven? 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:34.000 What do we need to do to get into heaven? 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:37.000 That's how we got into heaven. 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:38.000 The cross. 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:40.000 You and I didn't do it. 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.000 And as much as we hate to think of ourselves as charity cases, 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:48.000 it's the only way in nowadays. 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:52.000 So welcome to the charity case club. 00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:56.000 Another fascinating thing about the way Luke tells his story, 00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:01.000 he's really brilliant in it, in this, in Acts. 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:05.000 He tells us that even though, you know, it's that same, 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:08.000 he wants to tie it to the Tower of Babel, so he does say, 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:11.000 oh, you know, the Spirit touches their tongues, 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:14.000 he words it exactly like the Tower of Babel. 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:19.000 But then, no one says, they're speaking our language. 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:22.000 It's not the experience of anyone in the whole place. 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:25.000 At the Tower of Babel, everyone's talking in new languages 00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:28.000 and no one can understand because everyone's talking in new languages. 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:33.000 This one, the miracle is not the tongues, it's the ears. 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:38.000 This one, it says, how is it we're hearing that in our own language? 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:39.000 How is it we're... 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:42.000 So I don't want you to think that someone who's touched with the Spirit 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:46.000 speaks and like 50 languages come out at once. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:51.000 How is it we're hearing what they say in our language? 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:55.000 Well, it's amazing how much understanding can happen if we're interested. 00:07:55.000 --> 00:08:00.000 I mean, kid, there are people who speak English in America 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:06.000 who can actually understand people from Glasgow. 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:10.000 If they'll lean in and listen. 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:15.000 You know, at what point is it not the same language? 00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:16.000 No. 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:19.000 Sometimes the difference between Colorado and Glasgow 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:23.000 is not nearly as large as the difference between New York and Texas. 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:27.000 And that's just an accent. 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:30.000 What does it mean to understand? 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:35.000 It means to be willing to lean in and understand. 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:39.000 The Tower of Babel is a bunch of people 00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:42.000 who have decided they know what to say 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:46.000 and Pentecost is a bunch of people who have learned how to listen. 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:51.000 So one sort of nurtures understanding 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:54.000 and the other nurtures confusion. 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:58.000 So we're caught on this journey always as community. 00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:02.000 We're caught between Babel and Pentecost. 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:05.000 We're caught in that dynamic that says, 00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:08.000 how do we lean in and listen a little more? 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:10.000 Because the minute we do it with someone, 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:13.000 our ability changes completely. 00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:18.000 You know, we have a lot of times I hear people say, 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:22.000 I just thought I had an accent. 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:25.000 You know, they're at a church where someone's from another country. 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:28.000 They have an accent and I just can't understand them. 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:33.000 What's fascinating is I know many of the, 00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:34.000 it depends on the priest. 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:37.000 Some of them are very gifted with languages and some are not. 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:41.000 That's not necessarily the requisite of being a priest. 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:44.000 But what I do notice is, 00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:46.000 if they work at relating with the people 00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:48.000 and if they build relationships, 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:52.000 if their accent doesn't improve one bit in four years, 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:55.000 people start to understand. 00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:57.000 Well, they get used to the way he talks. 00:09:57.000 --> 00:09:59.000 Why? Because they're interested enough 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:02.000 and it happens the other way around. 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:04.000 There are priests who come in and say, 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:06.000 I'm sorry, I just don't understand. 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:08.000 And I have to say, 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:11.000 but you're from Colorado and so are they. 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:14.000 No, I mean, but it can be that. 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:15.000 Well, I just don't understand. 00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:16.000 I just don't. 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:17.000 And it's always them. 00:10:17.000 --> 00:10:18.000 I don't understand them. 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:20.000 Yes, you don't understand. 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:22.000 We have to be a people who work 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:25.000 to be open to the Pentecost spirit 00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:28.000 or we will inevitably fall into the tower of battle. 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:31.000 We will become a people who cannot understand each other 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:35.000 because it's all about expressing myself 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:37.000 and not really hearing. 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:39.000 There used to be a technique. 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:40.000 I'm sure they still use it, 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:45.000 but it was kind of new and shiny in the 80s and 90s 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:47.000 in psychodynamic theory 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:49.000 and especially in what was called 00:10:49.000 --> 00:10:51.000 Valon systemic family therapy, 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:52.000 which is what I studied. 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:53.000 And they would always have you say, 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:55.000 now remember in communication, 00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:58.000 when a couple is talking in a couple's counseling 00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:00.000 or in family counseling, 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:03.000 before someone responds to something, 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:06.000 you make them say, wait, wait, before you respond, 00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:08.000 what did they just say? 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:09.000 You make them repeat in their own words 00:11:09.000 --> 00:11:11.000 what the other person just said. 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:14.000 And until they get used to the irritating question 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:16.000 that you're going to ask each time, 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:19.000 they'll tell you exactly what of the first half 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:21.000 of what someone said. 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:22.000 They only heard the first half. 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:23.000 Why? 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:25.000 Because they spent the rest of the time 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:27.000 formulating their response. 00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:29.000 And the minute we're formulating our response, 00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:32.000 we're no longer listening. 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:33.000 We actually have to, you know, 00:11:33.000 --> 00:11:34.000 but I'm going to forget. 00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:35.000 I'm going to forget what they said 00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:37.000 that I wanted to respond to. 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:40.000 Forgetting your response is not nearly as important 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:43.000 as hearing everything they had to say 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:46.000 before my mouth just flies open 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:50.000 and all sorts of stuff comes out. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:54.000 You know, to learn to say, okay, listen to everything. 00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:55.000 I grew up in a family. 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:57.000 I used to tell people I grew up in a family 00:11:57.000 --> 00:12:01.000 all of us, and I still struggle with it. 00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:04.000 We all have a horrible, horrible habit 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:07.000 of interrupting each other. 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:13.000 I mean, six boys, who could have seen that coming? 00:12:13.000 --> 00:12:17.000 You know, but we all cut each other off 00:12:17.000 --> 00:12:19.000 before we're done with a thought. 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:22.000 And I used to tell people, oh, my gosh. 00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:23.000 We just, we interrupt. 00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:25.000 We just interrupt, and that's not the problem. 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:26.000 We don't listen. 00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:29.000 That's the problem. 00:12:29.000 --> 00:12:30.000 We interrupt. 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:33.000 Before you ever interrupt someone, 00:12:33.000 --> 00:12:36.000 you've decided to stop listening. 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:40.000 And head-to-cost is, how do we open our ears 00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:43.000 before we open our mouth? 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:44.000 No. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:48.000 I remember, that was one of my mother's favorite sayings, 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:51.000 and I don't want to shock the new generation, 00:12:51.000 --> 00:12:54.000 but my mother, once in a great while, 00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:56.000 as wonderful as we were, 00:12:56.000 --> 00:12:59.000 may have resorted to backhanding us, 00:12:59.000 --> 00:13:01.000 now's the case. 00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:03.000 And of all the things they did, 00:13:03.000 --> 00:13:05.000 that didn't ruin me, the other things did. 00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:09.000 But the thing I'll remember, I think I got, 00:13:09.000 --> 00:13:11.000 she said, I've told you a hundred times, 00:13:11.000 --> 00:13:13.000 it is always more important, 00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:15.000 you always open your ears first, always. 00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:17.000 And I said, even when eating? 00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:20.000 I was a delightful child. 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:25.000 So, you know, but there's that sense 00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:27.000 where we have to start to say, 00:13:27.000 --> 00:13:31.000 how interested are we in one another? 00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:33.000 I remember at my last parish, 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:35.000 I can't remember what we were talking about, 00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:37.000 but I said, you know, 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:42.000 a lot of people in a parish don't know each other. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.000 A lot of people will say, 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:46.000 you know, I go there and I know no one, 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:48.000 I haven't met anyone yet. 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:51.000 And the answer that is appropriate to give, 00:13:51.000 --> 00:13:54.000 if you can find a nice way to say it, 00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:59.000 is as soon as you're interested, you will. 00:13:59.000 --> 00:14:01.000 As soon as everybody else is interested enough in me, 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:03.000 I can belong. 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:05.000 No, no. 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:08.000 You have to be interested enough in them. 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:11.000 And you'll get to know people. 00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:14.000 And so we have all these anxieties 00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:17.000 about going out and getting to know people, 00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:21.000 because we're so worried about how we're going to be received. 00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:23.000 And the spirit comes down and says, 00:14:23.000 --> 00:14:25.000 the trick is, start receiving them 00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:27.000 and forget about how you're going to be received. 00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:29.000 That's their job. 00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:33.000 You be open to receiving who they are. 00:14:33.000 --> 00:14:37.000 And a bunch of individuals will become a community. 00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:41.000 And when they really deeply open themselves to the spirit, 00:14:41.000 --> 00:14:44.000 a community starts to become the church. 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:49.000 We're called to try harder to move from that power of babble 00:14:49.000 --> 00:14:52.000 and open our ears more to one another. 00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:54.000 And I'm finding more and more, 00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:56.000 I thought it would happen the other way around. 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:59.000 I always thought, as soon as I found inspiration, 00:14:59.000 --> 00:15:04.000 it turns out that if we open our ears first, 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:07.000 often it is the heart that will fall.

Father Pat’s message centers on the transformative power of listening and humility as the path to true community and spiritual unity. Drawing from the Gospel of John and the Pentecost narrative, he contrasts the confusion of Babel—born from human arrogance and self-reliance—with the harmony of Pentecost, made possible by divine initiative and open-hearted receptivity. The Holy Spirit, he emphasizes, is not primarily about speaking in tongues, but about enabling understanding. The shift from “I speak” to “I hear” is the key to building not just better relationships but the Church itself. Father Pat encourages us to lean into the Spirit by becoming better listeners, recognizing that grace is a gift, not a merit, and that true communion begins when we prioritize receiving others over being received. In a deeper and more reflective analysis, Father Pat's homily explores the profound theological and spiritual dynamics between two pivotal biblical events: the Tower of Babel and the Pentecost. He begins by situating the Gospel reading from John within the Easter season, designating it as a "Little Pentecost"—a prelude to the fuller outpouring of the Holy Spirit celebrated in the Acts of the Apostles. In this early moment, Jesus breathes the Spirit upon his already faithful disciples, a moment that is intimate and preparatory, contrasted with the Pentecost in Acts, where the Spirit is poured out on a diverse, global crowd, symbolizing the universality of the Gospel and the Church’s mission. Father Pat then offers a compelling theological framework: Babel represents humanity’s attempt to ascend to God on their own terms, driven by pride and self-sufficiency. The result is fragmentation and confusion. At Pentecost, by contrast, God descends to humanity, unifying what was once divided—not by eliminating differences, but by creating understanding amid diversity. This is not merely a miracle of speech, but of hearing. The Spirit enables people to understand one another, not because everyone suddenly speaks the same language, but because they are willing to truly listen. This distinction is central to Father Pat’s message. He argues that misunderstanding arises not from difference itself, but from the refusal to listen. Babel is not just a mythological explanation of linguistic diversity, but a spiritual metaphor: when we become so focused on expressing ourselves, our own plans, and asserting our own rightness, we stop listening. Communication breaks down, not because of the variety of languages or opinions, but because of our inward focus and pride. Pentecost, then, becomes the divine remedy—not a reversal of diversity, but a sanctification of it through mutual understanding, made possible by the Spirit. Father Pat further contextualizes this dynamic in practical pastoral and psychological terms. Drawing from his background in family systems therapy, he describes a familiar human tendency: when we listen only to formulate a response, rather than to understand, we cease to truly hear. He recalls therapeutic practices where individuals are asked to repeat what the other person said before responding—a discipline that reveals how little we often absorb when we’re focused on ourselves. This “listening discipline” is not just helpful in therapy, but essential for Christian community. He also reflects on the role of relational interest in the ability to understand. Using examples from parish life, he notes that people often say they cannot understand someone due to an accent or cultural difference. But when they invest in a relationship with that person, understanding naturally increases. It’s not about intellectual comprehension but about relational attentiveness. When we care enough to understand someone, even language barriers become permeable. This leads to one of Father Pat’s central themes: community is not built when we ask, “Who will receive me?” but when we ask, “Whom can I receive?” The Spirit does not prompt us to demand inclusion, but to extend it. The Church is born not from people asserting their place, but from people receiving one another in love. In this way, Pentecost is not just a historical event, but a continual call to conversion—from self-expression to self-giving, from speaking to listening, from pride to humility. He concludes by asserting that inspiration—the movement of the Spirit—often comes not before we listen, but after. We don't wait to be moved in order to open our ears; rather, by choosing to listen first, our hearts are opened, and the Spirit finds fertile soil. In a world increasingly marked by noise, division, and self-promotion, Father Pat invites us to return to the simplicity and power of Pentecost: a community formed not by uniformity, but by a shared willingness to hear and receive one another in the Spirit of Christ.
