Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples, I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine. For this reason, I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. The Gospel of the Lord. The Feast of the Trinity is one of those where no one comes out after Mass and says, that's exactly what I needed to hear. It is a theological Sunday. It is very heavy. And it it can give us a glimpse into who we are called to be, because it reminds us when we say we are created in the image of God. That we are created in the image of a communal God. God is not one. God is three. Now, the cover argument, God is not three. God is one. God is both. We can't let go of either. And today, it's often too easy to say, well, we'll talk a little bit about the Father and a little bit about the Son and a little bit about the Holy Spirit. And when I can't figure out a way to end the homily, I'll just go in the name of the Father and I'll walk off. But today is not about that. Today is about that mystery, that whatever it is that makes them one. Because we diminish, that's the part of the Trinity we diminish constantly. When we say, oh, they are one, we tend to mean it in human terms. Oh, they're on the same side. They agree. They don't argue. They present a united front. No, it's deeper than that. People will say, how can God the Father have allowed Jesus to go through what was on the cross? They both went through it. All three of them went through it. The theology of the Eucharist, we don't use this language, but you do not receive the body of Christ. You receive the body of all three members of the Trinity. You can't do one without the other. Indivisible. We can't divide one part off from the other. It's a mystical union. It is a mystical oneness. Some of the saints, they may have gone a little too far the other way, but some of the saints said it's better to realize three facets of the same God. The three faces of God. It is a unity that we can't get our head around. One of the better images I've run across over the years and I've shared with you at least four times, probably on this Sunday every year, is the image of the grove of aspens in Kaliurag. In the 1980s, one of the largest groves in the world, the people come from all over to see the beautiful, you know, aspen groves. They found, as they got into better thermal imaging and things and being able to see into the ground without disturbing things, using some of the tools archaeologists use, that that grove is a single living organism. It is not a bunch of trees. It is one plant. You and I will never, ever go up there and see anything but a bunch of individual trees. No, they're all living next to each other, so we call them a grove. But we will never see the oneness. Just our eyes don't go there. Everything we experience, everything you and I know as a tree is singular, and a grove is a group. And the reality of that is it is the largest single living organism on the planet, is a grove of aspen trees in Kaliurag. It could be the wine festival, we don't know. But that is not only the image of the Trinity, but that is the image of humanity created in the image of a Trinity. Is that you and I are, when we say, oh, we're called to be one. Oh, we are one in Christ. And we all think it means we're supposed to behave well and not hurt one another. No, it means we are one at a level you and I cannot understand this side of the grave. It is the fundamental theology of Christianity. Every culture has some fundamental point of Christianity that is countercultural, and we will always struggle the most with it. And for us, it is the oneness, because in various religions, religions form the cultures and the cultures form the religions. In Far East Asia, the cultures and the religions are very sociological. The hero is always the perfectly polite gentleman or lady, someone who does not harm other. That is the hero of that culture. When you get into Southeast Asia, Buddhism, Hinduism, the hero is the guru, the person who, no matter how awful life gets around them, they can find peace, they can find century. That is the hero of their culture. In the West, it is the pioneer. It is the one who got on their own and do things on their own and strike out on their own and I'm going to conquer the world and I'm going to do it. We have, over every other culture, we have an inordinate amount of movies that are not about community. They're about Steven Seagal saving the world. And if he's not available, you know, Schwarzenegger will do it. If he's not available, you know, we want to raise up heroes who will be the ones who save everyone else. Because we, our ideology of heroism is individualism. And that's the intersection of our culture with the countercultural gospel, with what is countercultural. We will always struggle with that. Is what it means to know that no one got where they got on their own. No one, you know, well, I earned everything I have. Tell that to your parents who knew you when you were six months old. If you're still alive, you got something you didn't earn. You know, but we don't like it there because I'm the person who's going to go out and take care of everything. Very counter-Christian. And very counter-Trinity. We're so into the individuals. It's, many, many theologians talk, this is why God in Christianity became so masculine. Because if you want to go to a romance language like Spanish or the languages that have been talking this theology longer than English, we are interested in El Padre, El Hijo, the Son, Lo Spirito, the Spirit, and not that interested in La Trinidad. If you were to, well, which, are any of those, you know, God, Father, Son, do we think of those as male or female? People try to parse it out. But the original language is as individual, as three individuals, God is masculine. As one, God is feminine. It's, you know, now it's split exactly in half. It's how we are imaging God at the moment. Are we imaging three individuals? Are we imaging one unity? And in all the languages that came out of Latin and Greek, it was always Trinity that was feminine. So you have this sense that because we didn't focus on the unity, God becomes very masculine for us. But we want to ding into that unity today and say, so what does it mean to imagine? What is this oneness that is beyond anything we can imagine? Now, we can't get too lost in it. It's a mystery. They say ad nauseum, in the Catholic theology, mysteries are not things you solve. In our culture, a mystery is supposed to be solved at the end of the episode, the end of the season, where some of the more irritating shows will go on for maybe by the end of the series. If you ever want to engage Father Marty in conversation, bring up a mystery novel. Oh, he loves them. But those are mysteries that we start the mystery because we know it will get solved. Catholic mysteries will just bind you in deeper and deeper and deeper with the knowledge that you never solve it. We are not 2,000 years closer to solving the Trinity. We'll never get there. It's beyond, it is infinite. And I know your teachers didn't want you to know this, but your minds are finite. We do have limits, and God is infinite, and you cannot push the infinite into the finite. It just won't work. So why do it? Because there's always more. It's richer. It enriches us. And if we dig into our nature as created in the triune nature, this Trinity, this plural image, then we start to realize that we never find our humanity except in connection to others. We are never fully who we are isolated in the world. And we may be more comfortable there sometimes, but that's not who we are. My identity is what I've done in the world. It's already, I don't know if I've told you before, I used to tell the kids at school, what I've created is the parable of the peanut butter sandwich. I always say, any of the kids in the audience, any of you know how to make a peanut butter sandwich? So how do you make the peanut butter? How do you make the bread? How do you make the jelly? Oh, well, no, once thousands of people in the community get my ingredients on the table, I know how to make a peanut butter sandwich, and I can tell you about the peanut butter sandwich. We don't see how connected we are. We don't see that someone dumps something in an ocean around the world and 20 years later, there's a virus, and 30 years later, the price of eggs go up. We are connected. And this is the way that we lean into that. This is the feast of that connectedness of humanity. It's the feast, I always say, it's not God in our hearts, it's God between our hearts. That is this weekend. And so as we, it would be easiest, let's talk about the creating and the sustaining and the salvation aspects of God. Let's talk about what makes them one. At a level of mystery, we cannot get past. Our faith is more dependent, and there are theologians, if they were passed away, their heads might blow up, to put it this way. Our faith is often much more dependent on our imagination than our intellect. Because our intellect is limited and our imagination is the closest we get to infinite. That's where we lean in. And Trinity, what a wonderful imagining. And Gregory of Nyssa, who came up with the idea, almost simultaneously with Gregory of Nyssa, which was great for theologians doing papers to have both of them named Gregory. But he always said, this is our image, this is the triune God we've come to know, but we shouldn't think that's the end of it. God is three and one. Well, that's as much as you and I get covered. But that doesn't describe it all either. That describes what we can end. So we ask God to make us a people who dig into the mystery, because what it will do for us is it will create a better community. How? Standing before the mystery of God, if you understand what it means for it to be mystery, you become humble. I've always said when I do interfaith dialogue that we are always gentle with one another. I've worked with rabbis and imams and people of all flavors of Christianity and Buddhist nuns, and we get together and we all recognize. Each one of us wants to say, my ridiculously insufficient vision of the Almighty is better than your ridiculously insufficient vision of me. Because as Cardinal Stafford used to say, all human visions of the Almighty are ridiculously insufficient. We'll never get there. But knowing that allows us to be humble enough to listen to one another and to be enriched. I have always, I will quote until the end of time, Rabbi Brian Field in that group said to me several years ago, you know, as a Catholic priest coming from a rabbi, he'd say, I have to tell you, 90% of the time you and I have identical theology. And 10% of the time you're interesting. Not a horror of disagreement. Oh, oh good, I'm not alone in the world. I think there are people, and it's sort of a small way of living life, is they are waiting for a world that all agrees with them. What a small way to live. I used to always say, if the whole church could agree with me, we'd probably shut down by Thursday. I'd mess it up. It is that mystery, our connection that allows us the humility to deepen the bonds, to deepen the oneness.
