When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, who do people say that the Son of Man is? They replied, some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. He said to them, but who do you say that I am? Simon Peter said in reply, you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus said to him and replied, Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this chief, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the nether world shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. One of the two times every year that I ever use the word loosed. laughter I don't know where these translations come from sometimes, but they got it translated out of the original language. I don't know if they got them clear into English or not. This is a... This feast is really a feast of the church's beginnings. It's less about Peter and Paul and more about everything they represent. In many theological circles, Peter is seen as the new Moses, as a pope, the bringer of the law, the keeper of order. He always has the keys. And Paul is the continuation of the prophets. And Paul did not... did not learn at the feet of Jesus. Paul had an experience of Jesus that, as far as Scripture tells us, his catechesis consisted of, why are you crucifying me? Much of the same catechesis I got from my parents over the years. laughter That's not... But that's it. It doesn't say that Jesus bore the fullness of the gospel into him. So, you know, Paul is really a strict prophet. Paul is someone who shows up at the door of the church and says, listen, I'm not Christian and I'm not Catholic, but I just had a prayer experience and I'd like to teach catechism. laughter Paul is a pure prophet. He has a message, but he's not always in line with the gospels because he did not learn from Jesus. And while Jesus was alive before the passion and death, what Paul knew from Jesus, he knew from Jesus' adversaries. laughter Totally different. And yet both of these are kind of unnecessary to start the church. For those of you who missed the bulletin announcements, the flock notes, the signs on the sides of the bus, and the sky writing this week, it was my 30th anniversary. laughter I heard from people I didn't know I knew. And so, you know, and for me, it's a good feast to reflect back on because this central question of where we get our faith, but more importantly, as he asks, Jesus asks the apostles, all his disciples are all gathered. And he says, so who do people say that I am? And that is the easiest question. What do people say about Jesus? We can talk all day long about that. Then he sharpens it up and says, so what do you say? And in the other gospels, not Matthew, it gets very uncomfortable. It says, so what do you say? And then Jesus kind of is down on the ground squatting crying in the sand while they're all going, ah. Because it's very easy to look and go, can you believe those people think you're this and those people think you're that and those people think, Jeremiah. And what about you? And finally, Peter ventures an idea. And I always wonder if he got it right or not. Jesus says, only God could have done this for you. But is that they got it right or that he was willing to take the chance? Because clearly you are the Christ, the son of the living God. But come to the passion, Peter does not realize who Jesus was. If he did, the death would not have come as a shock. He's still caught off guard. It's one thing to say you're the Messiah. It's another thing to agree on what that means. The Messiah for the Jewish people would have meant that he was going to be a military hero that brought Jerusalem to greatness. One of the reasons that those who were against him would proclaim him as Messiah is because they felt that would be the greatest threat to Rome. Was, oh, this is the leader that's going to rise up against us. That was the Messiah to bring the Jewish people to world prominence. You know, call in the first reading in Acts, Luke. Luke falls into what John often falls into, and he only does it in Acts because when he's writing Acts, he's writing as late as John was. The Acts is written way after the Gospel of Luke, and then he writes Part 2 about 10, 15 years later when the traditional Jewish community and Christianity are really in opposition, really in strife, really in conflict. And he has phrases that start to sound a little more like John. You know, Jesus, Herod did all this to them because he realized it was making the Jewish people happy. They're desperate to blame it on the Jews. And I know it's in our scripture, but I can tell you, the Pax Romana was not having its strings pulled by the Jews. They occupied that nation, you know. That's like saying that the Jews talk Hitler into stuff. No, not how it happened. They could care less how the Jews felt. But they didn't want to blame the Roman Empire for anything that was going on, and so the scripture, it's always got these little asides. You know, I can guarantee you, whether it's in scripture or not, Luke did not know what was going on in Herod's head. And we have to read scripture with that sharpened eye. And so, you know, we get this story of how the church starts and all of the generations that we don't know who have given us what we have today. And I think it's hard enough for us to remember to be grateful to the ancestors we actually knew in our life. But all of those who have built the hospitals and churches that we take for granted and the schools and the infrastructure and, you know, next week we talk about our country and we don't even like to admit how many hands went into building what you and I take for granted. We want to whittle it down to a couple of heroes that we feel comfortable with rather than the people who did the hard work of building a country. It's so hard to do. And so as I come to a 30th anniversary, I'm keenly aware of the people who have helped me in my life. And I try to be aware of the people I will never know this side of the grave who made everything you and I have possible. But we can pay it forward. We can keep the next generation in mind. We can do things that we're absolutely okay with them not giving us credit for. I know that was probably the most un-American thing I've ever said. We don't need credit for every good deed. Sometimes we do it to become good people. And so, you know, in this moment, where I find my heart resting as I celebrate the anniversary is really with the parishes I've been at. People ask me about Pope Leo, and I have to tell you, he was, you know, he's not just American. He's the South Side of Chicago. Das America. But I have been more formed by the parishes since ordination than all of the, don't tell the seminaries, all of the professors and even family members and everyone I knew before because you start to become who you are when you're doing things in the world, not when you're preparing for it. And they can, you know, as parents have learned, they can do everything they want so that their children can be independent in the world. And then the tragedy, they become independent in the world. Even independent of your thought. You know, it happens. And so who I've become in the last 30 years is much more visceral in my life than who I became in the first 30. And it's a good thing. Because I was a mess. I was more of a mess. That was presumptuous, wasn't it? I wasn't always the suave debonair person. It's this, but, you know, and so I looked to those parishes and I looked how much, and that's when someone says, well, yeah, he's American, he's also Latin American. Because the formation he had in Peru has done more to shape his priesthood than what happened before ordination. And we hope, we hope, because no one should stop learning in their 20s or 30s. No one should stop changing and becoming deeper in faith. And so I look back, you know, at the various parishes I've been in, all radically different, all radically the same. And I think that the secret, for me, the secret to any success I've had in priesthood, it's about 3 ideas. The first one is probably the most radical. I don't mean that because I know a lot of wonderful priests, but once in a while I watch the way we preach or hear the way we preach and I think, OK, the first rule, if you don't like people, just go into politics. There's got to be a politician in the room and I apologize. I wasn't going to be that or lawyers. I mean, who do we want to pick on this guy? But no, you're unequal. You have to truly like people or your formation will stop when you're ordained. Because, of course it would be nice to say, your prayer life. We all have prayer life. And if my prayer life is just between me and God, God starts sounding an awful lot like me. An awful lot. He always uses words I understand. He uses the same phrases. This may shock you, but my God seems to be a little snarky. A little too much. But when you're in dialogue, this is where religion is helpful. When you're in dialogue with the community, your image of God comes from the other people in the room as well. And they are the only thing in your life made in the image of God. Not the statues, not a ritual. There's the presence of God in our community, in the Word made flesh, in the Eucharist, and the image of God in the people. And we have to continue finding it there. And what I find is the more I get in touch with that, everyone I know is in need of something. Some of us are just in need at a very physical level, but most of us, we need to be better. We need correction. We need people to challenge us. But that is less prevalent than the amazing goodness of the people. And I can't imagine, you know, I've got friends that I talk to, and they're always, you know, you have to tell them this, and you have to tell them that, and you have to tell them this and that. And I think, do you not see the grace and the goodness of the people? I have a running joke that I always tell people whenever they say, Father, you know, this happened, and I was traveling, and we had a disaster in the family, and there was an accident on the highway. I missed Mass. Now, it is a joke, but I always say to them, you know they have to pay me to go. Now, of course, I could go. That is my belief. I don't know. I've never, you know. But there's a difference when someone whose job, as well as their vocation, their job is to be there, stands in front of people who are there totally on their own sake, of their own volition, for their own edification. I'm the one humbled. That dynamic should never be reversed. For the person whose job is to be there to say, well, those of you who we just tried to get to show up, why are you not there? And not only are you not paid, you give money. For those of you that weren't aware of that, you give money. It's that, I mean, you think of the difference in the dynamic. People who, week after week, for their own relationship with God, simply show up. How can you not start, when you stand up in front, how can you not start from a place of amazement at the goodness of the people? And that does more to form us than anything. And if we can couple that with literally wanting to interact, and this is what I would say to everyone, to the extent that you interact with one another, you will become better, holier people. I get to see it from up here. You are good for one another. This is not a journey that anyone should take alone. And so, you rarely, I mean, think of all of the Gospels where Jesus sits down one on one and instructs the apostles. Doesn't happen. You know, where people sign up for an hour of spiritual direction at a time. It's because, and it's not because Jesus is, he's just smarter when it comes to time management, that's not what it is. Because he knows that even if he is teaching, there is another level of formation that happens in the gathering of the people. And it nourishes those of us who are lucky enough to be priests. I rarely share much of my vocation story because it's a really terrible story. You know, when did you hear the call? I'm still waiting. There was no flash moment. It wasn't magical. You know, over time, as I discerned in seminary, it became apparent. This is my path. This is where I should be. You know, it was not a lightning strike moment. And, you know, you grow into it. But the other thing is, of course, my family was not terribly Catholic. My siblings, most of them do not go to Mass anymore. I went to a public school. They used to have us come and give vocation talks to the seminarians. And my first year out of seminary, they asked me to come do it. I've not been asked for the last 29 years. It doesn't hit on any of those great points that they want to make. But if you're connected to the people, people always say, so what drew you to become a priest? And I'm like, healing. I found healing and goodness in the community. And so, you know, this is why we are, one of the reasons we're called to gather every week, the obligation to Mass. I think people started to realize during the pandemic that they've been mistaught because we had to start re-articulating things quickly. I think most people felt like you have to get to Mass once a week, almost as though the grace of the Eucharist has a seven-day shelf life. Like, you know, that grace won't last any longer. You need your vitamin. You need your fix. You need your word. You have to do this. It's the only way to keep you on the straight and narrow. And it never occurred to us that the obligation comes from the fact that we all need one another. And on days when you don't feel like being here, someone else needs to come and know that the church is still here. It's not just, I'm here for me. You know, we are here for each other. It's a commitment. It's a community. So many churches are better than we are at the idea of people will say, you know, if they're Baptist, they'll often say, oh, you know, I belong to First Baptist Church and I belong to... And Catholics will often say, I go to Holy Family. I go to. It's not, I belong to. I go to. And that's why we don't get the obligation. When we belong, then other people want to see the gathering every week as well. We're part of their experience. I know it sounds, I mean, it almost sounds like it's an ego thing. I mean, who's going to miss you if you're not there? Many people. You may not interact with them every time. You will be amazed how often someone will come to me and say, Father, do you know the guy who sits back there that he has not been here for a few weeks. Is everything okay? People know you. And if you get interested, you'll know them. And what I would leave to any community I could, you know, as a priest is the more you spend with one another, the more time you spend, the more visibly you will be the body of Christ. How do I grow in holiness? Prayer? Absolutely. You know, spiritual rituals and practice? Absolutely. But the primary gathering, you'll notice Jesus did not get together with his disciples the night before he died for a business meeting. The last finance council meeting. I dream of. But a supper, a gathering, a coming together. And we hear all of this heavy stuff. But you know it was also social that happened. They came together. I used to say that, you know, that Christians really don't even know how to come together without food. That is not a dumb thing or a bad thing. The doctor thinks it's problematic. But it's not a bad thing that we come together and it's not just we're here for business, we're here, okay, we're going to learn this, we're going to do scripture. I have never taught a scripture class that people don't hang around afterwards and talk to each other and have coffee and we build a community. Otherwise, God would call us individually, there'd be no church. And so, you know, as we come together, I hope that we spend some time in awe of the other people that we pray with. I thank every parish I have been at, and I've only been at four. I try not to tell Fr. Jim Baird because they moved him around a lot and we're really good friends. And when I came here, we were at lunch of about five priests and he was sitting right next to me and I obviously pretended he wasn't there and I kind of pouted and I said, I'm really upset, I mean, this will be the third time they've moved me in 25 years. And he very quietly says, I'm going to punch you in the throat. I've only moved, you know, I've had four parishes, so I've been moved three times. Every parish is different and every parish is an amazing vision of grace and love. And so, as we go forth today, be aware of one another. And for me, on my anniversary, I thank you because I have never, ever been able to get up here without being overwhelmed by the goodness of those of you who sit out there.", "segments": [{"id": 0, --> 00:01:52.000 And Paul is the continuation of the prophets. 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.000 And Paul did not... 00:01:56.000 --> 00:02:00.000 did not learn at the feet of Jesus. 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:04.000 Paul had an experience of Jesus that, as far as Scripture tells us, 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:07.000 his catechesis consisted of, 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:10.000 why are you crucifying me? prophet. 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:32.000 Paul is someone who shows up at the door of the church and says, 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:35.000 listen, I'm not Christian and I'm not Catholic, 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:40.000 but I just had a prayer experience and I'd like to teach catechism. 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:42.000 laughter 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:45.000 Paul is a pure prophet. 00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:47.000 He has a message, 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:51.000 but he's not always in line with the gospels 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:54.000 because he did not learn from Jesus. 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:58.000 And while Jesus was alive before the passion and death, 00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:02.000 what Paul knew from Jesus, he knew from Jesus' adversaries. 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:04.000 laughter anniversary. 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:25.000 laughter 00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:29.000 I heard from people I didn't know I knew. 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:35.000 And so, you know, and for me, it's a good feast to reflect back on 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:41.000 because this central question of where we get our faith, 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:44.000 but more importantly, as he asks, 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:49.000 Jesus asks the apostles, all his disciples are all gathered. 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:51.000 And he says, so who do people say that I am? 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:53.000 And that is the easiest question. 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:55.000 What do people say about Jesus? 00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:58.000 We can talk all day long about that. 00:03:58.000 --> 00:04:01.000 Then he sharpens it up and says, so what do you say? 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:05.000 And in the other gospels, not Matthew, it gets very uncomfortable. 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:07.000 It says, so what do you say? 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:10.000 And then Jesus kind of is down on the ground squatting 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:15.000 crying in the sand while they're all going, ah. 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:17.000 Because it's very easy to look and go, 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:19.000 can you believe those people think you're this 00:04:19.000 --> 00:04:23.000 and those people think you're that and those people think, Jeremiah. 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:27.000 And what about you? 00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:32.000 And finally, Peter ventures an idea. 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:35.000 And I always wonder if he got it right or not. 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:38.000 Jesus says, only God could have done this for you. 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:41.000 But is that they got it right or that he was willing to take the chance? 00:04:41.000 --> 00:04:46.000 Because clearly you are the Christ, the son of the living God. 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:53.000 But come to the passion, Peter does not realize who Jesus was. 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:58.000 If he did, the death would not have come as a shock. 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:00.000 He's still caught off guard. 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:02.000 It's one thing to say you're the Messiah. 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:05.000 It's another thing to agree on what that means. 00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:07.000 The Messiah for the Jewish people would have meant 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:12.000 that he was going to be a military hero that brought Jerusalem to greatness. 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:16.000 One of the reasons that those who were against him would proclaim him as Messiah 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:20.000 is because they felt that would be the greatest threat to Rome. 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.000 Was, oh, this is the leader that's going to rise up against us. 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:30.000 That was the Messiah to bring the Jewish people to world prominence. 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.000 You know, call in the first reading in Acts, Luke. 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:37.000 Luke falls into what John often falls into, 00:05:37.000 --> 00:05:40.000 and he only does it in Acts because when he's writing Acts, 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:43.000 he's writing as late as John was. 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:46.000 The Acts is written way after the Gospel of Luke, 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:49.000 and then he writes Part 2 about 10, 15 years later 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:55.000 when the traditional Jewish community and Christianity are really in opposition, 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.000 really in strife, really in conflict. 00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:02.000 And he has phrases that start to sound a little more like John. 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:06.000 You know, Jesus, Herod did all this to them 00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:10.000 because he realized it was making the Jewish people happy. 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:13.000 They're desperate to blame it on the Jews. 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:17.000 And I know it's in our scripture, but I can tell you, 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:23.000 the Pax Romana was not having its strings pulled by the Jews. 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:27.000 They occupied that nation, you know. 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:31.000 That's like saying that the Jews talk Hitler into stuff. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:33.000 No, not how it happened. 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:36.000 They could care less how the Jews felt. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:42.000 But they didn't want to blame the Roman Empire for anything that was going on, 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:45.000 and so the scripture, it's always got these little asides. 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:48.000 You know, I can guarantee you, whether it's in scripture or not, 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:52.000 Luke did not know what was going on in Herod's head. 00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:56.000 And we have to read scripture with that sharpened eye. 00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:01.000 And so, you know, we get this story of how the church starts 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:06.000 and all of the generations that we don't know 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:08.000 who have given us what we have today. 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:13.000 And I think it's hard enough for us to remember to be grateful 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:18.000 to the ancestors we actually knew in our life. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:21.000 But all of those who have built the hospitals and churches 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:24.000 that we take for granted and the schools and the infrastructure 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:29.000 and, you know, next week we talk about our country 00:07:29.000 --> 00:07:34.000 and we don't even like to admit how many hands went into building 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:37.000 what you and I take for granted. 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:40.000 We want to whittle it down to a couple of heroes 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:42.000 that we feel comfortable with 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:46.000 rather than the people who did the hard work of building a country. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:48.000 It's so hard to do. 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:51.000 And so as I come to a 30th anniversary, 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:56.000 I'm keenly aware of the people who have helped me in my life. 00:07:56.000 --> 00:08:01.000 And I try to be aware of the people I will never know 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:06.000 this side of the grave who made everything you and I have possible. 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:08.000 But we can pay it forward. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:10.000 We can keep the next generation in mind. 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:14.000 We can do things that we're absolutely okay with them 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:16.000 not giving us credit for. 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:20.000 I know that was probably the most un-American thing I've ever said. 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:24.000 We don't need credit for every good deed. 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:27.000 Sometimes we do it to become good people. 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:31.000 And so, you know, in this moment, 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:36.000 where I find my heart resting as I celebrate the anniversary 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:41.000 is really with the parishes I've been at. 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:46.000 People ask me about Pope Leo, and I have to tell you, 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:49.000 he was, you know, he's not just American. 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:53.000 He's the South Side of Chicago. 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:57.000 Das America. 00:08:57.000 --> 00:09:02.000 But I have been more formed by the parishes since ordination 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:06.000 than all of the, don't tell the seminaries, all of the professors 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:09.000 and even family members and everyone I knew before 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:11.000 because you start to become who you are 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:14.000 when you're doing things in the world, not when you're preparing for it. 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:17.000 And they can, you know, as parents have learned, 00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:19.000 they can do everything they want 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:23.000 so that their children can be independent in the world. 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:27.000 And then the tragedy, they become independent in the world. 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:30.000 Even independent of your thought. 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:33.000 You know, it happens. 00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:37.000 And so who I've become in the last 30 years 00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:42.000 is much more visceral in my life 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:45.000 than who I became in the first 30. 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:47.000 And it's a good thing. 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:51.000 Because I was a mess. 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:55.000 I was more of a mess. 00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:58.000 That was presumptuous, wasn't it? 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:02.000 I wasn't always the suave debonair person. 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:07.000 It's this, but, you know, and so I looked to those parishes 00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:10.000 and I looked how much, and that's when someone says, 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:14.000 well, yeah, he's American, he's also Latin American. 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:17.000 Because the formation he had in Peru 00:10:17.000 --> 00:10:20.000 has done more to shape his priesthood 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:23.000 than what happened before ordination. 00:10:23.000 --> 00:10:25.000 And we hope, we hope, 00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:29.000 because no one should stop learning in their 20s or 30s. 00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:34.000 No one should stop changing and becoming deeper in faith. 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:39.000 And so I look back, you know, at the various parishes I've been in, 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:43.000 all radically different, all radically the same. 00:10:43.000 --> 00:10:48.000 And I think that the secret, for me, 00:10:48.000 --> 00:10:51.000 the secret to any success I've had in priesthood, 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:53.000 it's about 3 ideas. 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:56.000 The first one is probably the most radical. 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:59.000 I don't mean that because I know a lot of wonderful priests, 00:10:59.000 --> 00:11:02.000 but once in a while I watch the way we preach 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:04.000 or hear the way we preach and I think, 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:10.000 OK, the first rule, if you don't like people, 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:15.000 just go into politics. 00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:19.000 There's got to be a politician in the room and I apologize. 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:22.000 I wasn't going to be that or lawyers. 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:25.000 I mean, who do we want to pick on this guy? 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:27.000 But no, you're unequal. 00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:29.000 You have to truly like people 00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:33.000 or your formation will stop when you're ordained. 00:11:33.000 --> 00:11:36.000 Because, of course it would be nice to say, 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:38.000 your prayer life. 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:40.000 We all have prayer life. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:44.000 And if my prayer life is just between me and God, 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:48.000 God starts sounding an awful lot like me. 00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:50.000 An awful lot. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:54.000 He always uses words I understand. 00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:56.000 He uses the same phrases. 00:11:56.000 --> 00:12:00.000 This may shock you, but my God seems to be a little snarky. 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:03.000 A little too much. 00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:05.000 But when you're in dialogue, 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:07.000 this is where religion is helpful. 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:09.000 When you're in dialogue with the community, 00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:14.000 your image of God comes from the other people in the room as well. 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:17.000 And they are the only thing in your life 00:12:17.000 --> 00:12:21.000 made in the image of God. 00:12:21.000 --> 00:12:25.000 Not the statues, not a ritual. 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:28.000 There's the presence of God in our community, 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:32.000 in the Word made flesh, in the Eucharist, 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:35.000 and the image of God in the people. 00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:39.000 And we have to continue finding it there. 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:43.000 And what I find is the more I get in touch with that, 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:48.000 everyone I know is in need of something. 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:51.000 Some of us are
