At that time the Lord appointed suddenly two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them the harvest was abundant but laborers are few. So asked the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way behold I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money, bag, no sack, no sandals and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter say peace to this household. If a peaceful person lives there your peace will rest on him but if not it will return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another whatever town you enter and they welcome you eat what is set before you. Cure the sick in it and say to them the kingdom of God is at hand for you. The Gospel of the Lord. This this gospel has a couple little hidden bombs in it that we don't notice because we're so removed from a culture that was 2,000 years ago across the world and we don't see the things. There were lines where the people of the day who first read this and heard Jesus say these things their heads would have blown up. They would they they would have they would have started putting up the cross themselves because it flew in the face of what they believed. Nothing is nothing is more threatening to people than someone with a different worldview and so where it comes down a couple places first and probably the most shocking to them is this for you and I this heartless little line you know that if they welcome you stay in their house. If they welcome you eat what they give you. You try telling that to a Catholic on a Friday during Lent. What what happened to keeping kosher? One of the first laws of keeping kosher was not simply what to eat but that you did not sit down at table and eat with people who themselves were not keeping kosher. So he's basically undoing a lot of the stuff not just that they have in in their faith but that was sort of the heroic ends of their faith. We don't really have these with with our dietary stuff but you know they have these great hero stories of the people who would rather die than be forced to eat pork. My aunt used to make pork like that but I mean you know this sort of this heroic you know the heroes of our faith they were not going to break kosher no matter what Jesus says. If they welcome you eat what they put in front of you. You and I cannot probably get our heads around how unnerving that was to the people who first heard this. The welcome and the sharing is going to be more important than I did everything right. We tend to think that we are we are good Catholics if we don't break any rules. It doesn't matter if we haven't made any friends helped anyone or ever give it to a charity. I got to mass on Sunday. We like to diminish our faith to the minutiae because it's easier. It's it's easier to have a list of things that you don't have to do. As I said you know people who their entire list of faith is what we don't do. The holiest person in the world is whoever's in a coma. You're not getting anything done but they aren't doing anything either. You know we have to get past this they're doing the wrong thing and the greatest expression of my faith can have is to tell other people what they're doing wrong. That's not the greatest expression of our faith. Whenever we hear someone say you know we have to stand up for our faith they're not talking about feeding the poor. We're visiting the lonely or you know helping those who are sick. That's how we stand up for our faith is we become you know Christian examples. I was at the back of mass a few weeks ago and someone I just overheard a conversation between two people and and and someone said oh well you know I'm going to my my daughter's wedding and it'll be worse. It's not the church but I'm going anyway and the friend said well good because no one ever brought anyone back to church by being judgmental. He thought he was confessing someone and they thought he was heroic. You know it's just no one brings people back to church by letting them know how bad they are. You know and and Jesus says so I'm gonna send you out and here's the thing I'm gonna first before I send you out to share your faith with anyone I'm gonna make you dependent on them. Don't bring he does say don't bring money but don't bring the money bag in other words you could whatever you didn't carry in your hands I don't want you to not have money for the day but I also don't want you to have money for tomorrow. You know and even says and don't try to make friends along the way when you get to where you're going if they invite you in you make friends with the people there and you stay in that house and you make that relationship work and what he's done is he said what he's basically said is you know take no arrogance with you because when you must depend upon people you're about to share faith with that that takes all of the arrogance right out of you. These people have already extended welcome to you and in those desert communities an extending welcome to you is saving your life. People didn't live out in the desert without welcome for days. You just you know this is why hospitality is such an important part of Middle Eastern culture because without it people die and and you know we hopefully don't get to the point where we're like well good back they gone. No this is this is a biblical you know absolute commandment of hospitality and so he says they welcome you be welcomed if they're peaceful people give them the peace you have in your heart and let's stay with them and and if if you know if they serve baby with the eggs are you in for a treat? No. You know it's a it's that that I you know it not to push away the welcome because I'm sorry I live a better life than that and he's like well you can you can do that and you might even they might even learn about your faith but they ain't gonna grace it. You aren't you aren't going to bring people in and and the thing he does demand that they take with them is the thing we missed because we get this list of don't take this don't take this don't take this but it's already told you the punchline which is ahead of time he says I'm sending you out two by two. Take a companion. Do not go the Christian journey alone. Take someone with you. Take many people with you. Most most the times when we share faith really share faith it's one-on-one. We're we're face-to-face with someone. We can share in groups and some of that is wonderful but even even people who have you know gone to like Bible studies and they say oh we sit around a table and share our faith. If someone says something to you that hits home you're gonna seek that person out later and have a deeper sharing. The real deep sharing tends to be one-on-one and Jesus sends them out because if all of this dependency doesn't keep them from being arrogant a good companion will and I always I would love to think that what the first thing he did was take every one of them find out how they voted and put every Democrat and Republican together. That's a Christian Dean and Jesus told you to walk together. I you know my parents generation everyone I knew seemed to be not in faith but in reality a real mixed marriage. A Democrat and a Republican. I mean all of my parents friends I by the time I was 13 I thought marriage was when God gave you someone to cancel out of your vote. You know because it wasn't well I'm I'm going out and as soon as I find someone who reflects me to me I will match and and and we will be in love. You know love is about an other another person you know it's it is someone who we have some things in common and we challenge each other and in the challenge there you know there there's actual growth there's actual reason to be together. You know if someone says oh we agree on everything I'm like I am near it's cheaper. You don't get as many ring presents but it's still you know I mean there's this it's it's good to have people in our lives the challenges so Jesus sends them out two by two and then starts taking away the things that could make them too independent. Don't take a bunch of extra money, don't take a bunch of extra clothes, don't take everything, don't walk into a town going I don't met these people I'm here to share my faith. We walk in and we say no no we walk in with complete humility and and we we cannot share our faith until we've heard theirs and it's not about religion, it's not about the teachings of a church or a community, it's sharing our faith and most of us have rarely articulated our faith. We rarely talk to anyone about it. You know our religion we talk about we talk about the church says this, the church says this, the church says this, why does the church say that? But why you what what problem need to believe and someone says well you know it's not ours to believe it the bishops say and you believe it what brought you to that belief? You can't say I believe in the bishops because the bishops told me. So what brought you to that belief? What brought you to belief in Jesus? What makes you experience God and grace in life? When is it most difficult to experience? It's fascinating how many people lose faith when life goes bad while at the same time so many people that's the experience that deepens their faith. And other people, joyous moments they can see God and other people think joyous moments is where their mind is thinking about God. They're just lost in the joy. Every person is a different image of God. I think we believe that you know we are all created in the image of God and as soon as we figure out what we all have exactly in common we'll understand what the image is. No. No. God is infinite. There are more possible images of God than there are people in all of history. And so when we encounter one another it's another image of God. It's another piece of the puzzle. And and we should talk about our experience of faith. In a few minutes we're going to get together and say here is the faith we hold in common. Listen to how vague those statements are. Because what we hold in common has a million different colors to it. You know I believe in one God the Father Almighty. That means a gazillion different things to a gazillion different people. And it has language that we can agree on but it doesn't it doesn't shape out exactly the same for each person. You know we sometimes think as I've mentioned before that you know that Pokes just throw out infallible teachings right and left. Last time the Pope threw out something for papal infallibility was in the 1950s. Papal infallibility has been exercised three times in history. And the first time was to define papal infallibility. So people who think that you know the Pope is just throwing things out right and left it's gonna rain tomorrow. If you're a Catholic you are required to carry an umbrella. No. That's not faith that's weather. You know. And the last thing he he defined that with one of the Pope's defined infallibility was the doctrine of the assumption of Mary. That Mary was assumed into heaven and he was so careful about it because he's supposed to make explicit something that has always been implied in the faith. That's just been there for centuries. They do not invoke infallibility on some hot topic of the week because they're they're not making explicit something that's always been in the faith. So in the 1950s the Pope was pressured into this because there were two roots fighting in the church. One believed that Mary at the end of her life died and went immediately to heaven and the others believe she immediately went to heaven without dying. Both had a long history in the church but they wanted him to absolutely define the assumption. So he had to find according to Catholic faith that Mary at the end of her earthly course was assumed into heaven body and soul. Didn't answer the question they wanted. Why? Because the Catholic faith held both. He wasn't trying to make new doctrine. I mean these statements we make are vague. So many people I know that will say I believe everything in there even consubstantial which I have no idea what it means but I believe it. These are words the community as he's chosen but your faith is something very individual and we have to find those groups with whom we can share that. We have to find people in our lives that we can talk about the deeper issues and our own experience and and there are no hard and fast edges on that. You know when someone says well I'll talk faith but not politics. You're never going to draw that line because our faith tells us how we should treat people and politics is sort of the communal agreements on how we treat people. How we treat each other. What are the rights of a community against the rights of an individual. You can't really separate you know faith from family dynamics. You can't separate you know faith from how we do things in the world and so we have to have commandments. We have to have people we share deeply and the more that we have even if the deepest conversations are always one-on-one. You're not always with the same person and the more we have the more images of God we access and and the more we start to understand who we're called to be together in the world and so we ask God make us a people who before we worry about whether and where do I have enough money and do I have enough clothing do I have enough things do I have enough power in the world do we have enough relationship. Who are the people you know the old the old saying no one takes a U-Haul to the cemetery. I know it's not you know I I think all of us have to know that everything everything we have in life we lose at death except relationships. Relationship of ourself, relationship with God, relationship with others. It's all we take with us and God asks us to start experiencing as fully as we can. You know power faith with one another. We can always experience spirituality all on our own but faith is a road we walk together or quite often a road we stop walking all to Him.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 8.640000343322754, "text": " The Lord be with you. WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.640 The Lord be with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that 00:00:08.640 --> 00:00:12.760 time the Lord appointed suddenly two others whom he sent ahead of him in 00:00:12.760 --> 00:00:17.479 pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them the 00:00:17.479 --> 00:00:22.399 harvest was abundant but laborers are few. So asked the master of the harvest 00:00:22.399 --> 00:00:27.440 to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way behold I am sending you like 00:00:27.440 --> 00:00:33.439 lambs among wolves. Carry no money, bag, no sack, no sandals and greet no one 00:00:33.439 --> 00:00:40.360 along the way. Into whatever house you enter say peace to this household. If a 00:00:40.360 --> 00:00:45.319 peaceful person lives there your peace will rest on him but if not it will 00:00:45.319 --> 00:00:49.880 return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you 00:00:49.880 --> 00:00:55.040 for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to 00:00:55.040 --> 00:00:58.840 another whatever town you enter and they welcome you eat what is set before 00:00:58.840 --> 00:01:04.959 you. Cure the sick in it and say to them the kingdom of God is at hand for you. 00:01:04.959 --> 00:01:19.080 The Gospel of the Lord. This this gospel has a couple little hidden bombs in it 00:01:19.080 --> 00:01:23.279 that we don't notice because we're so removed from a culture that was 2,000 00:01:23.279 --> 00:01:28.360 years ago across the world and we don't see the things. There were lines where 00:01:28.360 --> 00:01:32.800 the people of the day who first read this and heard Jesus say these things 00:01:32.800 --> 00:01:38.120 their heads would have blown up. They would they they would have they would 00:01:38.120 --> 00:01:41.800 have started putting up the cross themselves because it flew in the face 00:01:41.800 --> 00:01:46.360 of what they believed. Nothing is nothing is more threatening to people than 00:01:46.360 --> 00:01:52.639 someone with a different worldview and so where it comes down a couple 00:01:52.639 --> 00:01:57.599 places first and probably the most shocking to them is this for you and I 00:01:57.599 --> 00:02:03.839 this heartless little line you know that if they welcome you stay in their house. 00:02:03.839 --> 00:02:11.440 If they welcome you eat what they give you. You try telling that to a Catholic 00:02:11.440 --> 00:02:19.520 on a Friday during Lent. What what happened to keeping kosher? One of the 00:02:19.520 --> 00:02:23.679 first laws of keeping kosher was not simply what to eat but that you did not 00:02:23.679 --> 00:02:28.080 sit down at table and eat with people who themselves were not keeping kosher. 00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:36.399 So he's basically undoing a lot of the stuff not just that they have in in 00:02:36.399 --> 00:02:43.440 their faith but that was sort of the heroic ends of their faith. We don't 00:02:43.440 --> 00:02:48.479 really have these with with our dietary stuff but you know they have these great 00:02:48.479 --> 00:02:54.520 hero stories of the people who would rather die than be forced to eat pork. 00:02:54.520 --> 00:03:02.160 My aunt used to make pork like that but I mean you know this sort of this 00:03:02.160 --> 00:03:07.479 heroic you know the heroes of our faith they were not going to break kosher no 00:03:07.479 --> 00:03:13.800 matter what Jesus says. If they welcome you eat what they put in front of you. 00:03:14.520 --> 00:03:20.800 You and I cannot probably get our heads around how unnerving that was to the 00:03:20.800 --> 00:03:27.639 people who first heard this. The welcome and the sharing is going to be 00:03:27.639 --> 00:03:33.399 more important than I did everything right. We tend to think that we are 00:03:33.399 --> 00:03:37.199 we are good Catholics if we don't break any rules. It doesn't matter if we 00:03:37.199 --> 00:03:40.800 haven't made any friends helped anyone or ever give it to a charity. I got to 00:03:40.800 --> 00:03:47.279 mass on Sunday. We like to diminish our faith to the minutiae because it's 00:03:47.279 --> 00:03:53.880 easier. It's it's easier to have a list of things that you don't have to do. As I 00:03:53.880 --> 00:03:58.240 said you know people who their entire list of faith is what we don't do. The 00:03:58.240 --> 00:04:04.240 holiest person in the world is whoever's in a coma. You're not getting anything 00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:10.399 done but they aren't doing anything either. You know we have to get past this 00:04:10.399 --> 00:04:16.359 they're doing the wrong thing and the greatest expression of my faith can have 00:04:16.359 --> 00:04:21.040 is to tell other people what they're doing wrong. That's not the greatest 00:04:21.040 --> 00:04:25.880 expression of our faith. Whenever we hear someone say you know we have to stand up 00:04:25.880 --> 00:04:30.839 for our faith they're not talking about feeding the poor. We're visiting the 00:04:30.839 --> 00:04:36.920 lonely or you know helping those who are sick. That's how we stand up for our 00:04:36.920 --> 00:04:45.720 faith is we become you know Christian examples. I was at the back of mass a few 00:04:45.720 --> 00:04:51.000 weeks ago and someone I just overheard a conversation between two people and and 00:04:51.000 --> 00:04:54.440 and someone said oh well you know I'm going to my my daughter's wedding and 00:04:54.440 --> 00:05:00.279 it'll be worse. It's not the church but I'm going anyway and the friend said 00:05:00.279 --> 00:05:06.799 well good because no one ever brought anyone back to church by being judgmental. 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:13.200 He thought he was confessing someone and they thought he was heroic. You know it's 00:05:13.200 --> 00:05:20.279 just no one brings people back to church by letting them know how bad they are. 00:05:20.279 --> 00:05:25.000 You know and and Jesus says so I'm gonna send you out and here's the thing I'm 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:29.880 gonna first before I send you out to share your faith with anyone I'm gonna 00:05:29.880 --> 00:05:37.320 make you dependent on them. Don't bring he does say don't bring money but don't 00:05:37.320 --> 00:05:40.920 bring the money bag in other words you could whatever you didn't carry in your 00:05:40.920 --> 00:05:45.679 hands I don't want you to not have money for the day but I also don't want you to 00:05:45.679 --> 00:05:50.239 have money for tomorrow. You know and even says and don't try to make friends 00:05:50.239 --> 00:05:54.440 along the way when you get to where you're going if they invite you in you 00:05:54.440 --> 00:05:57.880 make friends with the people there and you stay in that house and you make that 00:05:57.880 --> 00:06:04.480 relationship work and what he's done is he said what he's basically said is you 00:06:04.480 --> 00:06:11.239 know take no arrogance with you because when you must depend upon people you're 00:06:11.239 --> 00:06:17.000 about to share faith with that that takes all of the arrogance right out of 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:22.679 you. These people have already extended welcome to you and in those 00:06:22.679 --> 00:06:28.239 desert communities an extending welcome to you is saving your life. People didn't 00:06:28.239 --> 00:06:34.359 live out in the desert without welcome for days. You just you know this is why 00:06:34.359 --> 00:06:41.000 hospitality is such an important part of Middle Eastern culture because without 00:06:41.000 --> 00:06:46.559 it people die and and you know we hopefully don't get to the point where 00:06:46.559 --> 00:06:52.519 we're like well good back they gone. No this is this is a biblical you know 00:06:52.519 --> 00:06:58.559 absolute commandment of hospitality and so he says they welcome you be welcomed 00:06:58.559 --> 00:07:03.880 if they're peaceful people give them the peace you have in your heart and let's 00:07:03.880 --> 00:07:12.399 stay with them and and if if you know if they serve baby with the eggs are you in 00:07:12.399 --> 00:07:21.920 for a treat? No. You know it's a it's that that I you know it not to push away 00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:27.959 the welcome because I'm sorry I live a better life than that and he's like well 00:07:27.959 --> 00:07:32.279 you can you can do that and you might even they might even learn about your 00:07:32.279 --> 00:07:39.359 faith but they ain't gonna grace it. You aren't you aren't going to bring people 00:07:39.359 --> 00:07:45.760 in and and the thing he does demand that they take with them is the thing 00:07:45.760 --> 00:07:49.440 we missed because we get this list of don't take this don't take this don't 00:07:49.440 --> 00:07:53.000 take this but it's already told you the punchline which is ahead of time he says 00:07:53.000 --> 00:08:02.399 I'm sending you out two by two. Take a companion. Do not go the Christian 00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:09.519 journey alone. Take someone with you. Take many people with you. Most most the 00:08:09.519 --> 00:08:14.559 times when we share faith really share faith it's one-on-one. We're we're 00:08:14.559 --> 00:08:18.559 face-to-face with someone. We can share in groups and some of that is wonderful 00:08:18.559 --> 00:08:22.559 but even even people who have you know gone to like Bible studies and they say 00:08:22.559 --> 00:08:27.279 oh we sit around a table and share our faith. If someone says something to you 00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:32.200 that hits home you're gonna seek that person out later and have a deeper 00:08:32.200 --> 00:08:37.919 sharing. The real deep sharing tends to be one-on-one and Jesus sends them out 00:08:37.919 --> 00:08:43.159 because if all of this dependency doesn't keep them from being arrogant a 00:08:43.159 --> 00:08:48.479 good companion will and I always I would love to think that what the first thing 00:08:48.479 --> 00:08:53.200 he did was take every one of them find out how they voted and put every 00:08:53.200 --> 00:09:01.880 Democrat and Republican together. That's a Christian Dean and Jesus told you to 00:09:01.880 --> 00:09:07.599 walk together. I you know my parents generation everyone I knew seemed to be 00:09:07.599 --> 00:09:14.400 not in faith but in reality a real mixed marriage. A Democrat and a Republican. I 00:09:14.400 --> 00:09:18.719 mean all of my parents friends I by the time I was 13 I thought marriage was 00:09:18.719 --> 00:09:26.719 when God gave you someone to cancel out of your vote. You know because it wasn't 00:09:26.719 --> 00:09:32.400 well I'm I'm going out and as soon as I find someone who reflects me to me I 00:09:32.400 --> 00:09:39.880 will match and and and we will be in love. You know love is about an other 00:09:39.880 --> 00:09:46.039 another person you know it's it is someone who we have some things in 00:09:46.039 --> 00:09:51.719 common and we challenge each other and in the challenge there you know there 00:09:51.719 --> 00:09:56.479 there's actual growth there's actual reason to be together. You know if 00:09:56.479 --> 00:10:03.799 someone says oh we agree on everything I'm like I am near it's cheaper. You 00:10:03.799 --> 00:10:09.479 don't get as many ring presents but it's still you know I mean there's this it's 00:10:09.479 --> 00:10:13.640 it's good to have people in our lives the challenges so Jesus sends them out 00:10:13.640 --> 00:10:19.280 two by two and then starts taking away the things that could make them too 00:10:19.280 --> 00:10:23.760 independent. Don't take a bunch of extra money, don't take a bunch of extra clothes, 00:10:23.760 --> 00:10:28.479 don't take everything, don't walk into a town going I don't met these people I'm 00:10:28.479 --> 00:10:35.000 here to share my faith. We walk in and we say no no we walk in with complete 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:41.440 humility and and we we cannot share our faith until we've heard theirs and it's 00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:48.559 not about religion, it's not about the teachings of a church or a community, 00:10:48.559 --> 00:10:54.880 it's sharing our faith and most of us have rarely articulated our faith. We 00:10:54.880 --> 00:11:00.159 rarely talk to anyone about it. You know our religion we talk about we talk about 00:11:00.159 --> 00:11:03.520 the church says this, the church says this, the church says this, why does the 00:11:03.520 --> 00:11:10.840 church say that? But why you what what problem need to believe and someone says 00:11:10.840 --> 00:11:14.520 well you know it's not ours to believe it the bishops say and you believe it 00:11:14.520 --> 00:11:19.479 what brought you to that belief? You can't say I believe in the bishops 00:11:19.479 --> 00:11:24.239 because the bishops told me. So what brought you to that belief? What brought 00:11:24.239 --> 00:11:29.880 you to belief in Jesus? What makes you experience God and grace in life? When is 00:11:29.880 --> 00:11:36.880 it most difficult to experience? It's fascinating how many people lose faith 00:11:36.880 --> 00:11:42.039 when life goes bad while at the same time so many people that's the 00:11:42.039 --> 00:11:47.599 experience that deepens their faith. And other people, joyous moments they can see 00:11:47.599 --> 00:11:50.840 God and other people think joyous moments is where their mind is thinking 00:11:50.840 --> 00:11:56.840 about God. They're just lost in the joy. Every person is a different image of God. 00:11:56.840 --> 00:12:01.179 I think we believe that you know we are all created in the image of God and as 00:12:01.179 --> 00:12:04.479 soon as we figure out what we all have exactly in common we'll understand what 00:12:04.479 --> 00:12:10.359 the image is. No. No. God is infinite. There are more possible images of God 00:12:10.359 --> 00:12:15.239 than there are people in all of history. And so when we encounter one another 00:12:15.239 --> 00:12:21.119 it's another image of God. It's another piece of the puzzle. And and we should 00:12:21.119 --> 00:12:26.280 talk about our experience of faith. In a few minutes we're going to get together 00:12:26.280 --> 00:12:31.840 and say here is the faith we hold in common. Listen to how vague those 00:12:31.880 --> 00:12:38.239 statements are. Because what we hold in common has a million different colors to 00:12:38.239 --> 00:12:43.880 it. You know I believe in one God the Father Almighty. That means a gazillion 00:12:43.880 --> 00:12:48.400 different things to a gazillion different people. And it has language that we can 00:12:48.400 --> 00:12:55.280 agree on but it doesn't it doesn't shape out exactly the same for each person. You 00:12:55.280 --> 00:12:59.599 know we sometimes think as I've mentioned before that you know that 00:12:59.599 --> 00:13:03.919 Pokes just throw out infallible teachings right and left. Last time the 00:13:03.919 --> 00:13:09.039 Pope threw out something for papal infallibility was in the 1950s. 00:13:09.039 --> 00:13:15.479 Papal infallibility has been exercised three times in history. And the first 00:13:15.479 --> 00:13:22.000 time was to define papal infallibility. So people who think that you know the 00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:25.039 Pope is just throwing things out right and left it's gonna rain tomorrow. If 00:13:25.479 --> 00:13:30.239 you're a Catholic you are required to carry an umbrella. No. That's not faith 00:13:30.239 --> 00:13:35.520 that's weather. You know. And the last thing he he defined that with one of the 00:13:35.520 --> 00:13:41.119 Pope's defined infallibility was the doctrine of the assumption of Mary. That 00:13:41.119 --> 00:13:46.039 Mary was assumed into heaven and he was so careful about it because he's 00:13:46.039 --> 00:13:50.119 supposed to make explicit something that has always been implied in the faith. 00:13:50.159 --> 00:13:56.119 That's just been there for centuries. They do not invoke infallibility on some 00:13:56.119 --> 00:14:02.119 hot topic of the week because they're they're not making explicit something 00:14:02.119 --> 00:14:07.200 that's always been in the faith. So in the 1950s the Pope was pressured into 00:14:07.200 --> 00:14:12.359 this because there were two roots fighting in the church. One believed that 00:14:12.359 --> 00:14:17.080 Mary at the end of her life died and went immediately to heaven and the 00:14:17.080 --> 00:14:22.440 others believe she immediately went to heaven without dying. Both had a long 00:14:22.440 --> 00:14:27.039 history in the church but they wanted him to absolutely define the assumption. 00:14:27.039 --> 00:14:31.479 So he had to find according to Catholic faith that Mary at the end of her 00:14:31.479 --> 00:14:38.159 earthly course was assumed into heaven body and soul. Didn't answer the question 00:14:38.159 --> 00:14:44.080 they wanted. Why? Because the Catholic faith held both. He wasn't trying to make 00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:50.400 new doctrine. I mean these statements we make are vague. So many people I know 00:14:50.400 --> 00:14:54.359 that will say I believe everything in there even consubstantial which I have 00:14:54.359 --> 00:14:57.840 no idea what it means but I believe it. 00:14:58.559 --> 00:15:03.640 These are words the community as he's chosen but your faith is something very 00:15:03.640 --> 00:15:08.559 individual and we have to find those groups with whom we can share that. We 00:15:08.559 --> 00:15:13.039 have to find people in our lives that we can talk about the deeper issues and our 00:15:13.039 --> 00:15:20.239 own experience and and there are no hard and fast edges on that. You know 00:15:20.239 --> 00:15:24.119 when someone says well I'll talk faith but not politics. You're never going to 00:15:24.119 --> 00:15:30.080 draw that line because our faith tells us how we should treat people 00:15:30.080 --> 00:15:35.320 and politics is sort of the communal agreements on how we treat people. How we 00:15:35.320 --> 00:15:37.799 treat each other. What are the rights of a community against the rights of an 00:15:37.799 --> 00:15:43.640 individual. You can't really separate you know faith from family dynamics. You 00:15:43.640 --> 00:15:49.000 can't separate you know faith from how we do things in the world and so we have 00:15:49.000 --> 00:15:53.599 to have commandments. We have to have people we share deeply and the more 00:15:53.599 --> 00:15:58.000 that we have even if the deepest conversations are always one-on-one. 00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:03.840 You're not always with the same person and the more we have the more images of 00:16:03.840 --> 00:16:10.039 God we access and and the more we start to understand who we're called to be 00:16:10.039 --> 00:16:16.359 together in the world and so we ask God make us a people who before we worry 00:16:16.359 --> 00:16:20.599 about whether and where do I have enough money and do I have enough clothing do I 00:16:20.599 --> 00:16:24.760 have enough things do I have enough power in the world do we have enough 00:16:24.760 --> 00:16:31.520 relationship. Who are the people you know the old the old saying no one takes a 00:16:31.520 --> 00:16:39.400 U-Haul to the cemetery. I know it's not you know I I think all of us have to 00:16:39.400 --> 00:16:46.719 know that everything everything we have in life we lose at death except 00:16:46.719 --> 00:16:52.000 relationships. Relationship of ourself, relationship with God, relationship with 00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:58.880 others. It's all we take with us and God asks us to start experiencing as fully 00:16:59.000 --> 00:17:06.560 as we can. You know power faith with one another. We can always experience 00:17:06.560 --> 00:17:14.520 spirituality all on our own but faith is a road we walk together or quite often a 00:17:14.520 --> 00:17:18.400 road we stop walking all to Him.

Father Pat’s message centers on the radical hospitality, vulnerability, and relational nature of the Christian mission as outlined in the Gospel of Luke. He emphasizes that Jesus sends his disciples not with power or provision, but in humility and dependence, challenging religious and cultural norms. The essence of faith, according to Father Pat, lies not in rule-following or judgment, but in shared humanity, mutual dependence, and deep, personal connection with others. He critiques the tendency to reduce religion to a checklist of prohibitions and instead calls for a lived, relational faith that embraces the diversity of God's image in each person and values spiritual growth through relationship, dialogue, and vulnerability. The detailed message Father Pat presents unfolds in layers of scriptural insight, cultural critique, and pastoral wisdom. Beginning with the Gospel passage from Luke, he draws attention to Jesus’ instruction for the seventy-two disciples: they are to go out in pairs, carry no money, no bag, no sandals, and accept the hospitality of strangers. Far from being a simple missionary directive, Father Pat reveals how subversive and transformative these instructions were in their original context. For a first-century Jewish audience deeply committed to ritual purity and dietary laws, the command to "eat whatever is set before you" would have been scandalous. It undermined cherished boundaries, especially the prohibition against eating with those who did not observe kosher laws. In doing so, Jesus prioritized relationship and welcome over religious purity—effectively shifting the foundation of holiness from separation to connection. Father Pat contrasts this with the contemporary Catholic experience, where faith can often be reduced to rule-following and moral policing. He critiques the notion that holiness is defined by abstention—what we don’t do—rather than by the active embodiment of love, mercy, and justice. He uses humor and lived examples—like the person who thought they were being virtuous by avoiding their daughter’s non-church wedding—to illustrate the futility of judgmentalism in evangelization. “No one ever brought anyone back to church by being judgmental,” he quips, pointing instead to the power of presence, compassion, and humility. One of the most profound points Father Pat makes is about the structure of the missionary journey: Jesus sends them out two by two. In this seemingly minor detail, Father Pat finds deep theological meaning. Faith, he argues, is not a solitary journey. Christianity is not meant to be lived in isolation. Companionship on the road—especially with those who challenge our perspectives—is essential. He humorously imagines Jesus pairing Democrats and Republicans together to emphasize the need for spiritual relationships that are both affirming and challenging. Such pairings ensure that we don’t become self-righteous or arrogant in our faith-sharing, because a good companion will keep us grounded and accountable. Father Pat also explores the theological implications of dependence. Jesus commands his disciples not to bring provisions for the journey—not even extra money for tomorrow. This forces them into a posture of vulnerability and reliance on the very people they are sent to evangelize. In doing so, Jesus inverts the power dynamic: the evangelizer becomes the guest, the needy one. This dependence strips away arrogance and fosters genuine human connection. In the harsh reality of desert life, hospitality was not a nicety—it was life-saving. And Jesus commands his disciples to accept it with gratitude, even if it comes in forms that challenge their preferences or traditions. The emphasis on peace is another cornerstone of Father Pat’s reflection. The disciples are to greet each house with peace, and if the household is peaceful, the peace will rest there; if not, it will return. This dynamic of peace-giving and peace-receiving is relational, not coercive. It respects the freedom of the other and centers the mission not on conversion through argument but on the offering of peace and presence. Father Pat also challenges the modern Catholic tendency to define faith solely through doctrine or institutional identity. He underscores the importance of articulating one’s personal faith—not merely repeating what the Church teaches, but reflecting on why one believes, how one experiences grace, and when faith is most and least accessible. He points out that many Catholics can recite creeds and doctrines they don’t understand—“even consubstantial, which I have no idea what it means, but I believe it”—yet struggle to express a personal relationship with God. Faith, he insists, is not merely assent to abstract truths but a lived encounter, shaped by our stories, struggles, and relationships. Finally, Father Pat touches on the eternal significance of relationships. Material possessions, status, and achievements do not follow us beyond death. What endures are relationships—our relationship with God, with ourselves, and with others. These are the treasures we carry into eternity. Thus, the Christian life must prioritize relationship over possession, connection over division, and humility over self-reliance. In essence, Father Pat calls for a deeply relational, incarnational spirituality—one that mirrors Jesus’ own approach. Evangelization is not about convincing others through argument or moral superiority, but about walking alongside them, receiving from them, and sharing the peace and presence of Christ in humility and love. True faith is not rigid adherence to rules, but the courage to be vulnerable, the willingness to grow through challenge, and the grace to recognize God’s image in every person we meet.
