There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test Jesus and said, Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said, What is written in the law? How do you read it? He said in reply, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. He replied to him, You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live. But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor? Jesus replied, A man fell victim to robbers as he went from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise, a Levite came to the place and when he saw him, he passed on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the site and approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, with the instructions, Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back. Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robber's victim? He answered, The one who treated him with mercy. Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Today's synagogue gospel is a little trickier to give credit for. It's such a common, even if we can't think the whole story. The phrase, a good Samaritan has made its way into our culture, even in secular circles. People know what you mean when you say a good Samaritan. You say Samaritan, they don't have a clue what you mean. You're a good Samaritan, they know. But it takes on different layers in this culture. And one of the things that we should know is, when Jesus says to him, and it's an interesting question, the man says, What must I do to inherit eternal life? Now Jesus, as he always does, being somewhat Buddhist, I think, always answers a question with another question. He says, What is written in the law? How do you read it? And we don't understand that these scholars of the law, these, you know, the scribes, even the Pharisees, it wasn't just about could they quote scripture, but could they interpret it? And there was an art to interpretation very different from nowadays. They would rarely interpret with events from their own time or their life. Jesus would do that, and they caught off guard and say, He doesn't talk like anyone else. He's bringing in stuff from life. What they would often do is quote the law, and then they would quote kind of a path through all of their favorite rabbinical commentaries of the law. But they didn't use a lot of their own thought. Be like someone who got up and says today, Well, here's the scripture now. Augustine would say this, and Benedict would say this, but they don't really ever put any of their own stuff into it. That's not how they were trained. So first he quotes scripture right out of Deuteronomy 6. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind. Now, the next line is not in that. And as a matter of fact, in other gospel tellings of this story, Jesus synopses it there. That's the most important command. And the second is life that you shall. You shall treat your neighbor as yourself. He's adding to it. So this guy is giving us the scripture, and he's actually kind of quoting out of Medi Camelio, maybe Hillel, some of the well-known rabbis at that time who had this same thought. When Jesus says the second is like it, he's actually quoting previous rabbis. So it's all part of this history. And so Jesus basically says to him, okay, you and I are of the same rabbinate tradition. Great. But the guy is so good at the law, he just isn't good at understanding the scripture. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, with all your being. You can't really believe that, have your next question be, yeah, but how much do I have to actually do? All your heart, all your soul. Yeah, but not on Tuesday, sure. All your heart. He's just given this answer that Jesus says, that's the answer, and he goes, really, great. And let's walk it back a little. You have to love your neighbor as yourself. Okay, but like maybe 10 neighbors tops. Who do I have to treat as my neighbor? Who's really my neighbor? And you know, I mean, is it because many people would say your neighbor is only your next-door neighbor, so you're down to two. Who would forget? How far do we want to walk it back? I think I said this just last week in Muhammad, but this is what I get in confession often is, Father, is this a sin? And I know two things. Immediately I know two things. One, the answer is yes. Because they wouldn't ask him what. No one walks in and says, Father, I just saved someone's life. Is that a sin? No, they've done something that they know they probably shouldn't have done. And the second thing I know is that they're hoping I'm going to be able to say, well, that was bad. You got right up to the line, but not right up to the throat. What they're asking is, how bad can I be and still be okay? And the problem is that's just not part of the dynamic of faith and love and grace. When you look at the word love, it tends to ask the most of us, not the minimum. If you are in the throes of falling in love with someone, you usually don't sit down before that first date and go, okay, Lord, what's the minimum time I can spend with this person and still have them like me? If that's your thought, you're not in love. You need to find someone else. More importantly, they need to find someone else. What's the minimum I can give to this relationship and have it work? You know, that should make the other person want to run the other way as fast as they can. And so when we approach our faith, we can't say, you know, I love God, I love God with my whole heart. What's the minimum I have to give? Then those are just words. They don't really mean that we're trying to love God with our whole heart, our whole mind. So, you know, who is deserving of my compassion? Well, I'll first get rid of the word deserve. If you're doling out your compassion for who deserves it and not, that's not compassion. That's something else. It's, you know, quid pro quo. I suppose if I'm compassionate only to people I think deserve it, that's probably called networking. Seeing who I need to be connected to to get through this better. But it's not compassion. Compassion means to suffer it. I think it's the hardest part of the word because most of us, we love to help people if we can fix them. But to be with them when we can't. Or horror of horrors, discover that they're not the one that needs fixing. I am here to fix all of you. And as they say about other things, let it begin with me. We're not here to fix one another. That's God's job. But we're here to be with one another while we try to do things better. And to limit that with, what would I absolutely have to do and still get into heaven, is already a clear indication. Can you imagine if heaven is eternity with getting to spend eternity with the people who knew how to work the system? Been there, done that. And that's called Denver, Colorado. We know what it is to be with people who know how to work with the system. I was in an interesting class in rural where we had one of the professors say, you know, if we're not careful, confession, reconciliation, penance, whatever they were calling it that year, that sacrament, instead of being a sacrament of healing, becomes a sacrament of substitution. Instead of getting better, I just make sure I made it to confession. I do the same thing week after week. And as long as I can get it done by Friday, I'm good. As long as I can go to session on Saturday. If confession becomes what I do instead of digging my heels in and changing my life, it undoes us. No, faith isn't what we use while we don't work in ourselves. Now, you'll never get it perfect. I've told you before, you know, my goal every year is not to make fewer mistakes, just to make different ones. Make some different mistakes. Are you still caught in the same, you know, do I just do the same thing every week and show up to confession and say, I made it to confession, be good. Nothing is a substitute for work in the world. We had the Feast of Saint Benedict this week, and one of my favorite sayings of his is, you know, that our prayer has to be accompanied by good work because we have to lift our hearts to God with our hands. You know, we have to be doing something in our lives, which we know this in relationships. Somebody can say, you know, my family is the most important thing in the world to me, but if I don't have time for them, then they know that's just not true. You know, and it doesn't mean, it doesn't mean that there aren't other things in life that are more urgent. The balance between urgent and important is one of the hardest things we do in life. There's a lot of things that are important. You know, my prayer life is important. I don't have to get it done by 5 p.m. tonight or I'm done for. It doesn't have that urgency, and I am someone who loves deadlines. You tell me it has to be done by noon, and I'll get it done. If you tell me that this book must be returned to the library sometime, it will be there forever. I work better with deadlines, and so, you know, I tend to chase things that are urgent over things that are important. Relationships are important. Hopefully the relationship is not as urgent. Certainly, you know, we hope your spouse is more understanding and flexible than your boss, even though sometimes they also take on that role. You know, it's, you know, we, our families, our friends, our relationships are more flexible, but that doesn't mean that we procrastinate and never work on them. The number of people who have a lot of friends and go through life lonely. They say, I got friends, but I just don't make time for them. Do we love the Lord with our whole heart? What I love about this neighbor thing is really, if you were following this logically, the question would not be which one of them was neighbor to the guy who's been robbed, because the setup for it was, no, I'm not that old. Well, you're neighbor. The question is, which one of them considered the robber a neighbor, not who the robber considered. It's the other way around. And when you say, so who is my neighbor? Who you choose to help. No one says to God, who do I love in the world? God says everyone. Yeah, but I'm like, who really? We're thinking God is going to give you a set of people. These are your neighbors. Take care of it. God is saying, go pick neighbors. Who are my neighbors? That's your choice. And you can either create a small neighborhood or a large neighborhood. And people who are caught up in the need for safety above all things, go choose a small neighborhood. And God calls us out of that. God asks us, you tell me. I mean, we spend our whole life, who are we willing to help? I often like to think that if there is a final judgment, if there's a final test, it will be this one. That when we hit, and I'm big on believing that heaven is not a gated community, but for the sake of the analogy, if you arrive at the gates of heaven, what if it's God who asks us the question, so who were your neighbors? How many were you willing to have? Who were your neighbors? And it's the breadth and midth of that group of neighbors that is our grace. We're constantly in that sense of, well, who do I really have to help? Who needs help? How much do I really have to love someone to be in love? It's a not a says question. God says, if you're in this, you'll be in it all. And those irritating people who are really in this for the whole thing, will try to drag the best of us into that charity stuff, too. Does Ann Zimmer care? She's our director of social. It's that thing, if you're in, you're not only in, you're excited, you want other people to know about it. Whenever we ask the question, what's the least I have to do, we walk off the path. We ask God to make us a people who are in love with God. And who know that the only way to express that love is to care for God's children. Who is my neighbor? --> 00:02:06.000 The phrase, a good Samaritan has made its way into our culture, even in secular circles. 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:09.000 People know what you mean when you say a good Samaritan. 00:02:09.000 --> 00:02:12.000 You say Samaritan, they don't have a clue what you mean. 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:14.000 You're a good Samaritan, they know. 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:20.000 But it takes on different layers in this culture. 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:23.000 And one of the things that we should know is, 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:27.000 when Jesus says to him, and it's an interesting question, 00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:30.000 the man says, What must I do to inherit eternal life? 00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:36.000 Now Jesus, as he always does, being somewhat Buddhist, I think, 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:40.000 always answers a question with another question. 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.000 He says, What is written in the law? 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:45.000 How do you read it? 00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:49.000 And we don't understand that these scholars of the law, 00:02:49.000 --> 00:02:54.000 these, you know, the scribes, even the Pharisees, 00:02:54.000 --> 00:03:00.000 it wasn't just about could they quote scripture, but could they interpret it? 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:03.000 And there was an art to interpretation very different from nowadays. 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:08.000 They would rarely interpret with events from their own time or their life. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:11.000 Jesus would do that, and they caught off guard and say, 00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:13.000 He doesn't talk like anyone else. 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:16.000 He's bringing in stuff from life. 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:18.000 What they would often do is quote the law, 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:22.000 and then they would quote kind of a path 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:26.000 through all of their favorite rabbinical commentaries of the law. 00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:28.000 But they didn't use a lot of their own thought. 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:31.000 Be like someone who got up and says today, 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:32.000 Well, here's the scripture now. 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:35.000 Augustine would say this, and Benedict would say this, 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:39.000 but they don't really ever put any of their own stuff into it. 00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:41.000 That's not how they were trained. 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:45.000 So first he quotes scripture right out of Deuteronomy 6. 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:47.000 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:50.000 with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind. 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:55.000 Now, the next line is not in that. 00:03:55.000 --> 00:04:00.000 And as a matter of fact, in other gospel tellings of this story, 00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:02.000 Jesus synopses it there. 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:04.000 That's the most important command. 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:07.000 And the second is life that you shall. 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:09.000 You shall treat your neighbor as yourself. 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:10.000 He's adding to it. 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:14.000 So this guy is giving us the scripture, 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:17.000 and he's actually kind of quoting out of Medi Camelio, 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:20.000 maybe Hillel, some of the well-known rabbis at that time 00:04:20.000 --> 00:05:28.000 And you know, I mean, is it because many people would say 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:30.000 your neighbor is only your next-door neighbor, 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.000 so you're down to two. 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:36.000 Who would forget? 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:38.000 How far do we want to walk it back? 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:40.000 I think I said this just last week in Muhammad, 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:43.000 but this is what I get in confession often is, 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:45.000 Father, is this a sin? 00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:47.000 And I know two things. 00:05:47.000 --> 00:05:49.000 Immediately I know two things. 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:51.000 One, the answer is yes. 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:54.000 Because they wouldn't ask him what. 00:05:54.000 --> 00:05:56.000 No one walks in and says, 00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:58.000 Father, I just saved someone's life. 00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:01.000 Is that a sin? 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:04.000 No, they've done something that they know 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:06.000 they probably shouldn't have done. 00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:08.000 And the second thing I know is that they're hoping 00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:10.000 I'm going to be able to say, well, that was bad. 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:15.000 You got right up to the line, but not right up to the throat. 00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:20.000 What they're asking is, how bad can I be and still be okay? 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:24.000 And the problem is that's just not part 00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:27.000 of the dynamic of faith and love and grace. 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:29.000 When you look at the word love, 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:33.000 it tends to ask the most of us, not the minimum. 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:39.000 If you are in the throes of falling in love with someone, 00:06:39.000 --> 00:06:42.000 you usually don't sit down before that first date 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:46.000 and go, okay, Lord, what's the minimum time 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:50.000 I can spend with this person and still have them like me? 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:53.000 If that's your thought, you're not in love. 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:55.000 You need to find someone else. 00:06:55.000 --> 00:07:00.000 More importantly, they need to find someone else. 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:03.000 What's the minimum I can give to this relationship 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:05.000 and have it work? 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:08.000 You know, that should make the other person 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:12.000 want to run the other way as fast as they can. 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:15.000 And so when we approach our faith, we can't say, 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:18.000 you know, I love God, I love God with my whole heart. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:21.000 What's the minimum I have to give? 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:23.000 Then those are just words. 00:07:23.000 --> 00:07:26.000 They don't really mean that we're trying to love God 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:28.000 with our whole heart, our whole mind. 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:33.000 So, you know, who is deserving of my compassion? 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:38.000 Well, I'll first get rid of the word deserve. 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:41.000 If you're doling out your compassion 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:46.000 for who deserves it and not, that's not compassion. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:48.000 That's something else. 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:50.000 It's, you know, quid pro quo. 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:53.000 I suppose if I'm compassionate only to people 00:07:53.000 --> 00:07:59.000 I think deserve it, that's probably called networking. 00:07:59.000 --> 00:08:01.000 Seeing who I need to be connected to 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:03.000 to get through this better. 00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:05.000 But it's not compassion. 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:08.000 Compassion means to suffer it. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:10.000 I think it's the hardest part of the word 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:13.000 because most of us, we love to help people 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:16.000 if we can fix them. 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:19.000 But to be with them when we can't. 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:21.000 Or horror of horrors, 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:26.000 discover that reconciliation, penance, 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:29.000 whatever they were calling it that year, 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:34.000 that sacrament, instead of being a sacrament of healing, 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:38.000 becomes a sacrament of substitution. 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:40.000 Instead of getting better, 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:43.000 I just make sure I made it to confession. 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:45.000 I do the same thing week after week. 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:48.000 And as long as I can get it done by Friday, I'm good. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:51.000 As long as I can go to session on Saturday. 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:54.000 If confession becomes what I do 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:58.000 instead of digging my heels in and changing my life, 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:01.000 it undoes us. 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:06.000 No, faith isn't what we use while we don't work in ourselves. 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:09.000 Now, you'll never get it perfect. 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:12.000 I've told you 00:10:47.000 because we have to lift our hearts to God with our hands. 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:52.000 You know, we have to be doing something in our lives, 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:55.000 which we know
