Glory be to the Lord. Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet and listened to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me. The Lord said to her in reply, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken from her. The Gospel of the Lord. I get a sense that today's liturgy leaves us with one burning question. Why did Father Pat jump in and say the Gloria instead of letting it his son? The choir at the other masses has decided to say the Gloria for the summer. And I didn't say the first mass this morning, so I kind of forgot which mass I was at. It was not a pop quiz, which is good for you guys. Because, you know, they changed several words in the Gloria about 10 years ago. But none of us say it anymore. We sing it. And, you know, most of you, as well as you think you know lyrics, it can be your favorite Christmas carol. Try to say the lyrics without the toot. It's just not how you learned it. And so it was kind of fun to hear. It was like one of those interlinear texts where you had the old translation on one side and the new on the other. I got to hear all of those differences. The liturgy readings today, though, you know, they give us these models of hospitality. I know when we hear the Martha and Mary story, we're most interested in the differences between Martha and Mary. And, you know, we have faith in action versus contemplative faith. And Mary comes off as the hero of this story. And Martha comes off as the hero of the Lazarus story. And, you know, sadly, this Mary is not in the canon of saints anywhere. I don't even know. Probably because, you know, they could have had St. Mary of Bethany, I suppose. But, you know, St. Mary's kind of taken. We have a St. Martha. St. Martha made the canon. But you get these stories of welcome and what it means, you know, Abraham welcoming these three strangers, Martha and Mary and Lazarus, really, who are, we sometimes forget, they are unique in many ways in scripture. They're the only glimpses we get into Jesus's friends, not his apostles, not his disciples, not people that we think he gave a mission to. I mean, he's friendly with them as well. But these are, there's no reason we should believe unless, well, he would hang out with anyone but, you know, good Jews who are going to become good Catholics. These are friends. This seems to be where he goes when he's just going to unwind. He has friends in the world. And he goes there and he's, you know, unless these two are the strangest women in the world, he's very, very good friends. I can't imagine being invited over as a pastor to people's house, I don't know real well, and have one of them say, would you tell them to help me? I'm just the guest. But actually, I think I have a hospital call. You know, I mean, that's what, it's such a weird dynamic, unless they're really good friends. There have even been scripture scholars who have posited very reflectively, there's no proof, that, you know, they could very well have been friends of the Zechariah and Elizabeth, the Bethany end of the family, you know. They could be extended family, but definitely there is this welcome in. But we start the liturgy with that. Abraham welcoming the stranger. And where most of us would fear the stranger, and especially, I think, we're in a day of heightened fear and heightened rhetoric. That strangers are bad. You know, in a time when we're in that heightened rhetoric against the stranger, you know, Abraham is immediately, we have to help these people, we have to make food for them. And where this is very much becomes part of their religious culture, it wasn't at that time part of normal secular tribal culture. They were tribal. And you had to, you know, who is this person? They're a little weary. Who are they? But he's not weary at all. He just immediately shows hospitality. And the interesting thing about the story is by opening himself to the stranger, his own lineage is allowed to continue. Most of us, they go, well, you know, if I open my heart to the stranger too much, what about my own? What if my own life, what about my own deeds and my own things? What if I'm going to overspend myself? You know, there's got to be enough for me and mine. And the story in our scripture is it's when he reaches out to those who are not his circle, that his own future becomes secured. I imagine it's a scripture many people don't like or would prefer we not mention. But that's where the scripture leads us. Clear to this point of Martha and Mary. Now we have friendship. But you also see that even in the tightest-knit circles, there's still conflict. I remember whenever, you know, it's a common argument I hear. Memory is even the wrong word. It's happened so many times in my life. That if you talk about helping strangers, whether they're the strangers, you know, in a community, whether they're strangers to a church, whether they're strangers to the country, whether they're strangers to just you personally, it doesn't matter. When we talk about it, I will inevitably get someone to say, well, you know, I understand that. But, you know, we've got limited resources. And remember, it's just smart to make sure that your own oxygen mask is on securely before you help someone else. That sounds like great advice. And it is. But I've never heard anyone on an airplane get up and say, Now, make sure your own oxygen mask is on securely. You've had enough time to make sure you're feeling good about the oxygen. And you're certain you'll have enough for the rest of your life. And then they'll reach out. And do it, I guess. Those are different ideas. How much oxygen do you need before you think you can help the next person over? That's where Abraham kind of puts modern culture to shame. Not a wealthy man. You know, he's going to give, as I've told you before, if you'll give $1,000 to the church, I'd love to tell you you'll have blessing. I think you will. But you'll also be $1,000 poorer. Giving is sacrificial. I always think it's fascinating that people who call themselves Christian, we are called to be Christ in the world. And you'll say, Well, you know, Christ, you know, sacrificed his very life on the cross. I don't think we're called to go that far. Well, you know, Christ was all about giving you the core. Well, you know, if you're in a good place, but maybe I don't know that. I mean, I don't think that that's mandatory. You know, Christ is the judge of all things. Oh, yes, that, that, that we should do. Oh, we love being the judge. We love when our Christianity gives us a moral edge. And then we think, you know, I have nothing wrong. I have nothing against those people. But the Bible says, and I always tell people, the Bible says is code. The Bible as interpreted by me says. It's always and we don't want to take responsibility for our spin on Scripture, on church documents, on faith. And the minute someone has to resort to this, I'm not saying this, this is God. It's because they have no defense for them to blame God. You know, I'm a nice person. God. He's a tough case. And so instead, Jesus, and you look at Jesus. Jesus never rains down anger on anyone but the religious leaders. We're doing it to everyone else. In other words, the only person in this room who shouldn't really be concerned is clocking at the bell. Every time find Jesus upset with some was inscribed Pharisee scholar of the law. Another rabbi. And it's shocking that we can take those readings and say, how that translates today is that I'm on the hook and you've got problems. We are called to be a people of welcome. And what is the fear around welcome? Who has given us that fear? What are the reasons? And do the reasons hold up? Well, you know, if you let that person in the church, it's going to, it'll scandalize people. Again, code. That would scandalize people like me. You know, if you let someone in the church, if you let someone in the country and let someone in your family. You know, it's 2025 and I know people who will not go to the wedding of a child because they're not bearing a Catholic. We're not going to let that person in the family. Whatever our new boundary border frontier, whatever we call it is, who is it that we've said? Well, I hope it's not angels or God like it is in the first story because if they come by my house, they're moving on. Who do we not welcome? In the biblical terms, there was what was called the Anahuim. These were the specially beloved of God. God's poor. And in the actual biblical texts, it consisted of three groups. The widow, the orphan and the stranger. Really, the only one whose plight has changed much is the widow. Because in that day and age, women had no way to make a living. They had no way to earn money. They had no way to be on their own. Except basically prostitution, which is why they were also shunned if they were single women because they weren't dead. They were probably like something improper. It's a hard, hard case. And Jesus comes in today and says, how do we soften our heart? How do we soften our heart to where we're not callous to suffer? Even if someone thinks, well, this has to happen for this reason, and those people just have to suffer. We don't do, you know, I always remember my mother would say, and I don't remember. I think we stole this from somewhere, but it was always the saying in the house. If we were going to get, and anyone under 20, plug your ears, this just happened back in my day, spanked. They would rather, she would rather sanctimoniously say, this hurts me more than it hurts you. And our comeback was always not in the same place. You know, there's that, it's that sort of, you know, well, you know, some people just have to suffer so that some of us can live better. Ouch. Where is that in the gospel? Well, you know, our church will stay pure if we don't let those people in. Where is that in the gospel? We really don't find that until the ruling classes in the Middle Ages take over Christianity. Then we start to see these sort of Christianity should bolster the status quo. Radically different from the gospel. And so today we're just asked, whether it be the, you know, whether it's widow, orphan, or the stranger. The person who is marginalized and has, does not have the same access to the basics of life that goes to those take for granted. How do we respond? And how do we get to that Jesus place that says, we respond to their suffering before we go, well, now wait, will this be good for me? Create a world where there's less suffering. That's better for everyone. I've said to, when I was talking with kids, when I had schools, always, you know, you aren't safer on the playground when you get stronger. You're safer when you build a playground where bullying does not happen. And a lot of, oh, well, that's just pie in the sky. That'll never happen. I'd say, you could say that about the kingdom of God. We're still called to be a people who are relentless in our pursuit of the kingdom of God. And we may not be successful, but if our love for Jesus is deep enough, maybe we can be faith. WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.000 The Lord be with you. 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:03.000 And with your spirit. 00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:06.000 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. 00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:08.000 Glory be to the Lord. 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:12.000 Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:17.000 She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet and listened to him speak. 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:21.000 Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:26.000 Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:29.000 Tell her to help me. 00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:31.000 The Lord said to her in reply, 00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:35.000 Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. 00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:37.000 There is need of only one thing. 00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:43.000 Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken from her. 00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:45.000 The Gospel of the Lord. 00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:56.000 I get a sense that today's liturgy leaves us with one burning question. 00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:03.000 Why did Father Pat jump in and say the Gloria instead of letting it his son? 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:08.000 The choir at the other masses has decided to say the Gloria for the summer. 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:13.000 And I didn't say the first mass this morning, so I kind of forgot which mass I was at. 00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:17.000 It was not a pop quiz, which is good for you guys. 00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:22.000 Because, you know, they changed several words in the Gloria about 10 years ago. 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:24.000 But none of us say it anymore. 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:25.000 We sing it. 00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:30.000 And, you know, most of you, as well as you think you know lyrics, 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:32.000 it can be your favorite Christmas carol. 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:35.000 Try to say the lyrics without the toot. 00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:37.000 It's just not how you learned it. 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:42.000 And so it was kind of fun to hear. 00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:46.000 It was like one of those interlinear texts where you had the old translation on one side 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:48.000 and the new on the other. 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:50.000 I got to hear all of those differences. 00:01:51.000 --> 00:02:00.000 The liturgy readings today, though, you know, they give us these models of hospitality. 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:03.000 I know when we hear the Martha and Mary story, 00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:06.000 we're most interested in the differences between Martha and Mary. 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:11.000 And, you know, we have faith in action versus contemplative faith. 00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:14.000 And Mary comes off as the hero of this story. 00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:17.000 And Martha comes off as the hero of the Lazarus story. 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:25.000 And, you know, sadly, this Mary is not in the canon of saints anywhere. 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:26.000 I don't even know. 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:31.000 Probably because, you know, they could have had St. Mary of Bethany, I suppose. 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:34.000 But, you know, St. Mary's kind of taken. 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:36.000 We have a St. Martha. 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:38.000 St. Martha made the canon. 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:42.000 But you get these stories of welcome 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:47.000 and what it means, you know, Abraham welcoming these three strangers, 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:55.000 Martha and Mary and Lazarus, really, who are, we sometimes forget, 00:02:55.000 --> 00:03:00.000 they are unique in many ways in scripture. 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:03.000 They're the only glimpses we get into Jesus's friends, 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:09.000 not his apostles, not his disciples, not people that we think he gave a mission to. 00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:11.000 I mean, he's friendly with them as well. 00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:16.000 But these are, there's no reason we should believe unless, well, 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:19.000 he would hang out with anyone but, you know, 00:03:19.000 --> 00:03:23.000 good Jews who are going to become good Catholics. 00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:26.000 These are friends. 00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:31.000 This seems to be where he goes when he's just going to unwind. 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:34.000 He has friends in the world. 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:38.000 And he goes there and he's, you know, 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.000 unless these two are the strangest women in the world, 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:43.000 he's very, very good friends. 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:47.000 I can't imagine being invited over as a pastor to people's house, 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:51.000 I don't know real well, and have one of them say, 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:54.000 would you tell them to help me? 00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:57.000 I'm just the guest. 00:03:57.000 --> 00:04:01.000 But actually, I think I have a hospital call. 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:05.000 You know, I mean, that's what, it's such a weird dynamic, 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:10.000 unless they're really good friends. 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:14.000 There have even been scripture scholars who have posited very reflectively, 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:17.000 there's no proof, that, you know, 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:23.000 they could very well have been friends of the Zechariah and Elizabeth, 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:26.000 the Bethany end of the family, you know. 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:31.000 They could be extended family, but definitely there is this welcome in. 00:04:31.000 --> 00:04:34.000 But we start the liturgy with that. 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:38.000 Abraham welcoming the stranger. 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:44.000 And where most of us would fear the stranger, 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:50.000 and especially, I think, we're in a day of heightened fear and heightened rhetoric. 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:53.000 That strangers are bad. 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:59.000 You know, in a time when we're in that heightened rhetoric against the stranger, 00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:03.000 you know, Abraham is immediately, 00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:06.000 we have to help these people, we have to make food for them. 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:10.000 And where this is very much becomes part of their religious culture, 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:16.000 it wasn't at that time part of normal secular tribal culture. 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:18.000 They were tribal. 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:20.000 And you had to, you know, who is this person? 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:22.000 They're a little weary. 00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:23.000 Who are they? 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:25.000 But he's not weary at all. 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:29.000 He just immediately shows hospitality. 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:36.000 And the interesting thing about the story is by opening himself to the stranger, 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:40.000 his own lineage is allowed to continue. 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:44.000 Most of us, they go, well, you know, if I open my heart to the stranger too much, 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:46.000 what about my own? 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:48.000 What if my own life, what about my own deeds and my own things? 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:52.000 What if I'm going to overspend myself? 00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:54.000 You know, there's got to be enough for me and mine. 00:05:54.000 --> 00:06:00.000 And the story in our scripture is it's when he reaches out to those who are not his circle, 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:04.000 that his own future becomes secured. 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:09.000 I imagine it's a scripture many people don't like or would prefer we not mention. 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:14.000 But that's where the scripture leads us. 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:18.000 Clear to this point of Martha and Mary. 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:19.000 Now we have friendship. 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:28.000 But you also see that even in the tightest-knit circles, there's still conflict. 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:33.000 I remember whenever, you know, it's a common argument I hear. 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:35.000 Memory is even the wrong word. 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:37.000 It's happened so many times in my life. 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:43.000 That if you talk about helping strangers, whether they're the strangers, you know, in a community, 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:46.000 whether they're strangers to a church, whether they're strangers to the country, 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:50.000 whether they're strangers to just you personally, it doesn't matter. 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:53.000 When we talk about it, I will inevitably get someone to say, 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:55.000 well, you know, I understand that. 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:57.000 But, you know, we've got limited resources. 00:06:57.000 --> 00:07:06.000 And remember, it's just smart to make sure that your own oxygen mask is on securely before you help someone else. 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:08.000 That sounds like great advice. 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:10.000 And it is. 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:13.000 But I've never heard anyone on an airplane get up and say, 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:18.000 Now, make sure your own oxygen mask is on securely. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:22.000 You've had enough time to make sure you're feeling good about the oxygen. 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:24.000 And you're certain you'll have enough for the rest of your life. 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:26.000 And then they'll reach out. 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:28.000 And do it, I guess. 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:30.000 Those are different ideas. 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:37.000 How much oxygen do you need before you think you can help the next person over? 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:43.000 That's where Abraham kind of puts modern culture to shame. 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:45.000 Not a wealthy man. 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:49.000 You know, he's going to give, as I've told you before, 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:53.000 if you'll give $1,000 to the church, I'd love to tell you you'll have blessing. 00:07:53.000 --> 00:07:54.000 I think you will. 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:57.000 But you'll also be $1,000 poorer. 00:07:57.000 --> 00:08:01.000 Giving is sacrificial. 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:05.000 I always think it's fascinating that people who call themselves Christian, 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:08.000 we are called to be Christ in the world. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:10.000 And you'll say, Well, you know, Christ, you know, 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:12.000 sacrificed his very life on the cross. 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:14.000 I don't think we're called to go that far. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:17.000 Well, you know, Christ was all about giving you the core. 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:19.000 Well, you know, if you're in a good place, but maybe I don't know that. 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:21.000 I mean, I don't think that that's mandatory. 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:24.000 You know, Christ is the judge of all things. 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:27.000 Oh, yes, that, that, that we should do. 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:29.000 Oh, we love being the judge. 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:33.000 We love when our Christianity gives us a moral edge. 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:36.000 And then we think, you know, I have nothing wrong. 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:38.000 I have nothing against those people. 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:45.000 But the Bible says, and I always tell people, the Bible says is code. 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:51.000 The Bible as interpreted by me says. 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:58.000 It's always and we don't want to take responsibility for our spin on Scripture, 00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:02.000 on church documents, on faith. 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:07.000 And the minute someone has to resort to this, I'm not saying this, this is God. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:14.000 It's because they have no defense for them to blame God. 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:17.000 You know, I'm a nice person. 00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:19.000 God. 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:23.000 He's a tough case. 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:27.000 And so instead, Jesus, and you look at Jesus. 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:34.000 Jesus never rains down anger on anyone but the religious leaders. 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:36.000 We're doing it to everyone else. 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:47.000 In other words, the only person in this room who shouldn't really be concerned is clocking at the bell. 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:54.000 Every time find Jesus upset with some was inscribed Pharisee scholar of the law. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:57.000 Another rabbi. 00:09:57.000 --> 00:10:09.000 And it's shocking that we can take those readings and say, how that translates today is that I'm on the hook and you've got problems. 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:11.000 We are called to be a people of welcome. 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:17.000 And what is the fear around welcome? 00:10:17.000 --> 00:10:19.000 Who has given us that fear? 00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:21.000 What are the reasons? 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:25.000 And do the reasons hold up? 00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:32.000 Well, you know, if you let that person in the church, it's going to, it'll scandalize people. 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:34.000 Again, code. 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:38.000 That would scandalize people like me. 00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:44.000 You know, if you let someone in the church, if you let someone in the country and let someone in your family. 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:52.000 You know, it's 2025 and I know people who will not go to the wedding of a child because they're not bearing a Catholic. 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:56.000 We're not going to let that person in the family. 00:10:56.000 --> 00:11:02.000 Whatever our new boundary border frontier, whatever we call it is, who is it that we've said? 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:11.000 Well, I hope it's not angels or God like it is in the first story because if they come by my house, they're moving on. 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:12.000 Who do we not welcome? 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:15.000 In the biblical terms, there was what was called the Anahuim. 00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:18.000 These were the specially beloved of God. 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:20.000 God's poor. 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:26.000 And in the actual biblical texts, it consisted of three groups. 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:31.000 The widow, the orphan and the stranger. 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:37.000 Really, the only one whose plight has changed much is the widow. 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:41.000 Because in that day and age, women had no way to make a living. 00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:43.000 They had no way to earn money. 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:47.000 They had no way to be on their own. 00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:55.000 Except basically prostitution, which is why they were also shunned if they were single women because they weren't dead. 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:57.000 They were probably like something improper. 00:11:57.000 --> 00:12:00.000 It's a hard, hard case. 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:04.000 And Jesus comes in today and says, how do we soften our heart? 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:11.000 How do we soften our heart to where we're not callous to suffer? 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:16.000 Even if someone thinks, well, this has to happen for this reason, and those people just have to suffer. 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:25.000 We don't do, you know, I always remember my mother would say, and I don't remember. 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:29.000 I think we stole this from somewhere, but it was always the saying in the house. 00:12:29.000 --> 00:12:35.000 If we were going to get, and anyone under 20, plug your ears, this just happened back in my day, spanked. 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:43.000 They would rather, she would rather sanctimoniously say, this hurts me more than it hurts you. 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:47.000 And our comeback was always not in the same place. 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:58.000 You know, there's that, it's that sort of, you know, well, you know, some people just have to suffer 00:12:58.000 --> 00:13:00.000 so that some of us can live better. 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:02.000 Ouch. 00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:04.000 Where is that in the gospel? 00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:09.000 Well, you know, our church will stay pure if we don't let those people in. 00:13:09.000 --> 00:13:11.000 Where is that in the gospel? 00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:19.000 We really don't find that until the ruling classes in the Middle Ages take over Christianity. 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:27.000 Then we start to see these sort of Christianity should bolster the status quo. 00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:30.000 Radically different from the gospel. 00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:36.000 And so today we're just asked, whether it be the, you know, whether it's widow, orphan, or the stranger. 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:46.000 The person who is marginalized and has, does not have the same access to the basics of life that goes to those take for granted. 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:49.000 How do we respond? 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:55.000 And how do we get to that Jesus place that says, we respond to their suffering before we go, 00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:57.000 well, now wait, will this be good for me? 00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:02.000 Create a world where there's less suffering. 00:14:02.000 --> 00:14:04.000 That's better for everyone. 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:12.000 I've said to, when I was talking with kids, when I had schools, always, you know, 00:14:13.000 --> 00:14:15.000 you aren't safer on the playground when you get stronger. 00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:19.000 You're safer when you build a playground where bullying does not happen. 00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:24.000 And a lot of, oh, well, that's just pie in the sky. 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:25.000 That'll never happen. 00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:28.000 I'd say, you could say that about the kingdom of God. 00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:36.000 We're still called to be a people who are relentless in our pursuit of the kingdom of God. 00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:45.000 And we may not be successful, but if our love for Jesus is deep enough, maybe we can be faith. 00:14:49.000 --> 00:14:50.000 Amen.

Father Pat’s message emphasizes the radical hospitality of the Gospel and challenges us to examine how open our hearts truly are to others, especially the marginalized and the stranger. He contrasts the world’s inclination to preserve personal comfort and security with the biblical call to self-giving love, as exemplified by Abraham’s welcome of the strangers and Mary’s attentive presence at Jesus’ feet. Father Pat warns against using religion as a justification for exclusion and self-righteousness, reminding us that Jesus consistently reserved his harshest criticism for the religious elite, not for the outsider. In reflecting on the Gospel story of Martha and Mary, he invites us to discern what truly matters — not just action or service, but a heart that listens and makes space for divine presence and the needs of others. Our calling is to create a world shaped less by fear and more by love, where the widow, the orphan, and the stranger — God's especially beloved — are not only welcomed, but cherished. The readings and reflections presented by Father Pat center around the theme of hospitality — both in its literal and spiritual sense. He begins by humorously acknowledging a liturgical mishap involving the Gloria, using it as a segue into the deeper message of the day: that our worship and our lives must be rooted in attentiveness to God’s presence and to others. Using the Gospel story of Martha and Mary, Father Pat explores the tension between active service and contemplative presence. Martha, burdened with much serving, is contrasted with Mary, who sits at Jesus’ feet. While Martha's actions are not condemned, Jesus gently redirects her anxiety, pointing to Mary’s choice as the "better part." Father Pat challenges the common interpretation that pits service against prayer, suggesting instead a deeper question: what is motivating our service? Is it love, or is it anxiety, control, or fear of judgment? Further, Father Pat uses the story of Abraham welcoming the three strangers — who turn out to be angels (or even the Lord Himself) — as a powerful illustration of hospitality's spiritual significance. Abraham's openness to the stranger results not in loss, but in the fulfillment of God’s promise — the continuation of his lineage. This becomes a profound metaphor: that when we make room for others, especially those outside our immediate circle, we paradoxically secure our own future. This stands in stark contrast to today’s culture of fear, self-protection, and exclusion. Father Pat critiques modern rhetoric that sees the stranger — whether immigrant, outsider, or someone who lives differently — as a threat. He points out that such thinking is often veiled in religious language but lacks the Gospel's heart. He draws attention to the biblical concept of the “Anawim” — the widow, the orphan, and the stranger — those who are most vulnerable and most beloved by God. In a world obsessed with securing its own oxygen mask first, Father Pat asks how much is enough before we are willing to reach out. He exposes the hypocrisy in Christian attitudes that embrace judgment and moral superiority while ignoring Christ's central command to love and welcome. Jesus, he reminds us, never rebukes the outcast, but consistently critiques the religious who use God as a shield for their own biases. Through all of this, Father Pat calls for a radical re-orientation of our Christian lives: from self-preservation to sacrificial love; from fear to faith; from judgment to mercy. He emphasizes that we are not called merely to protect an institution or maintain the purity of a community, but to embody the Gospel in a world of suffering. Our mission is to build a world where love, not fear, is the foundation — a world that reflects the kingdom of God. Even if the fullness of that kingdom seems far off, he urges us to be faithful in its pursuit. The measure of our Christianity is not how well we defend our boundaries, but how deeply we welcome others in Christ’s name.
