Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying, the scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach, but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to carry, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues, greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation rabbi. As for you, do not be called rabbi. You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers. And call no one on earth your father, but you have one Father in heaven. Do not be called master, but you have one master, the Christ. The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled. Whoever humbles himself will be exalted. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. There's a lot of today's gospel that if you can't get your mind into the headset of the genre, the way they taught, the way these little discourses unfold, you end up taking it a little too literally, and you end up in some very odd places. As Catholics, it's interesting because I think once in a while someone will say, why do you in the church do this? And we get absolutely defensive about something because we don't know, but we're pretty sure there's no good reason. Learn it. Learn it. The reasons are there. We don't have to panic. You know, one of those, someone will say, why do Catholics, why do they feel the need to confess to a priest? In my faith, we confess directly to God. And of course, I could get all upset about that, but my question immediately becomes, why would you confess to God? He knows what you did last night. I mean, we immediately, sometimes, we kind of lock up and decide, oh, I don't know how to defend this. And we don't actually listen. This is one of those. Someone will say, you know, it says here, don't call anyone father. Why do you guys call your priests father? And of course, the question is, why do we call our male parents father? You know, well, we don't. We call them dad. Well, first off, the word father actually appears nowhere in the Aramaic text. This is an English word, years later. So let's say that we all decide we can't use the word father. So for any earthly version of father, whether it be a priest or the head of a family that's male, we're going to instead use the word Bob. And that's what Bob will mean in our culture. Bob will mean a male parent or a priest. 100 years from now, the new, new, new, new American Bible translation, revised edition, will translate pater as Bob. And we're right back where we started. So it's not saying you have a concept here that you're not allowed to name in your culture because it would be disrespectful to God. We have to flip it and say, remember that the word father, when applied to God, is always deficient. You know, God, no human image of God, father, parent, mother, any of it, is ever close to sufficient. And so don't mix up the two concepts. Don't tie yourself in knots trying to come up with a word every time scripture translates, retranslates, and says, oh, now they've translated it, as Pete. Pete's out now. Language is language. But what it's saying is, don't let language become your new idol. Don't get caught up in, this is what this word means. Because it's really, we read this and say, yeah, don't start thinking anyone around you is God. More importantly, don't think that God is as simple as anyone around you. It's keeping the God image large is what this is really trying to get us to. And the teaching style doesn't translate to the modern ear always. But remember, this is not, Jesus really comes to teach more about theology than anthropology. So he's not trying to teach you all about people. He's teaching you the image of God. So the question always is, what does it say about God? And the other part, which of course is huge in the gospel, is here's what the gospel says about God, and then the much bigger part of the gospel, and here's what you're supposed to do. Because what he's pointing out today is the number, and he's attacking religious leaders. So once again, we're going to get this for about a month. All of these sort of, if they get a little fire and brimstone-y, I'm hoping that all, every pulpit in America is not doing this, but doing this. He's talking to religious leaders. And throughout the gospel, the only times Jesus seems to lose his temper, really seems to come out with strong language, is when those who are leading religion start to believe they get to control access to God. That seems to be the number one drive Jesus crazy sin, is people saying, we can control access to God. You're holy, you're not, you're in, you're out. That is huge. And so he goes after them pretty harshly. He basically gets this to the point of, these are what hypocrites are. Hypocrites say, my job is not to inspire, my job is not to be with you in your journey, my job is not to suffer with the people, my job is to say, here is the bar, and if you can't clear it, then you don't get in. There's a lot of that religion in the world. Because, and it's not because, I listened to a fascinating talk yesterday, it's really not because of the way the Catholic church is, or the way the Protestant church is, or the way the Buddhists is, it's because of the way people are. Religion has, for a very long time, been an amazing force for good, and an amazing force for evil in the world, and it usually, your image of God usually reflects who you are in the world. And so if you really think God is very upset with all those people, you'll notice, quite frankly, that you seem to be upset with all those people too. And this is not one of those which came first, the chicken or the egg, we know which came first. I don't like you, and lo and behold, eventually God doesn't. And if you are compassionate towards others, you will find the compassionate vision of God. Now the thing theology does is slowly break down these images and say, now, we know in scripture God calls us to be a people of compassion, which means if we're not, our God image has probably been damaged, which means we've got something going on that predates our God image. And we're gonna have to get back and figure out what that is so we can figure out what we believe in God. I love that these readings and our Advent readings come, at least in the northern hemisphere, in this onslaught of winter. It's being very gentle this year, it's giving us little doses, but it is the season for me, I always think of this as, it's the season of the bare trees. And it's a marvelous image of God to focus on once a year is, what happens when all of the chlorophyll is gone and then all the leaves are gone? What happens when you're left with just the bare structure? In our faith, what would happen if we had to spend a week without all of our trappings? You know, rituals and rosaries and stained glass and statues and just focus, what's the fundamental God image that we have when we get rid of all, you know, all the leafy abundance that we live with most of the time? What happens when we just say, so what do we really believe about God and who does it call me to be in the world? You will never get your mind around God. Too big, too big. You can figure out from the gospel actually pretty easily what our mission in the world is. And when we find the question, I wonder what God's calling me to, when we find it incredibly difficult, we're probably asking the wrong question. You know, many of you have heard over the years, I have this theory that we love to ask God's will on everything that's not important. I mean, I know people that will, they will pray to God before they choose their outfit in the morning. But go one step bigger. What happens when we get to careers? You know, and this is a very threatening thing for us to hear sometimes as priests. What if God looks at someone and says, they could be a priest or be married, either would be within my vocational call. What if the call of God is, be a good husband, be a good priest, be a good wife, be a good son, be a good doctor, be a good, what if that's the vocational call? Not what we do, but how we do it in the world. I love, I don't know if it's ever going to work, but I love trying to get the kids on the playground. You know, don't try to ask God what he wants you to be when you grow up, start small. When your fist is doubled up and you're really angry at someone, ask God about your vocation for the next 30 seconds. It will be stunningly clear, but I think because it's so clear is exactly why we don't ask it. When we see people in trouble, when was the last time we saw someone really struggling and prayed about our vocation in that moment? That vocation that might not take the rest of my life. You know, sometimes it's easier to commit the rest of our life than the next five minutes. I have to tell you, this is probably way more confessional than you will ever need to hear. But I go through these phases of, and I'll lose interest after about 30 episodes, but I'll find a new TV show. And you know, nowadays, those of you who are younger don't remember, it was horribly primitive when I was growing up. You actually had to commit to a show and watch it at the same time every week, or you didn't get to see it at all. Can you imagine such a world? Anyway. But now, you know, you just go out on another channel and they have all of season one running, you know. And so, I have learned a whole bunch about the generation younger than me. I have been watching a show called Catfish. Oh. Shh. There's a word my friend uses called shitar, which stands for severed head in the road. And it means one of those things that's really horrible, but you can't take your eyes off it. You know you're gonna look. And what this is, is it's a show about people who date online and they use fake pictures. And these two guys kind of go on detective and see whether someone's being catfished or not. Catfish means the person you think you're talking to is not the person at all. But the reason I can't get my mind out of this show is I'm fascinated with the quote unquote victims who will tell you. I've been talking, I've been typing with him or her online and looking at a picture, and this is the person I'm going to spend the rest of my life with. I am so in love. And I'm like, how does the mind get there? And then when they meet the person, and it's actually someone who looks totally different, different age, sometimes different gender. Oh yeah, severed head in the road. And they see the real person walk out for the first time. The hosts, for my liking, too often let this devolve into, you know, it was the real person. All that's different here is the physical characteristics. How important is that? First off, it is important, but secondly, that's not all that's different. They've been playing a character. They've been playing a character of, this is how I think I'd behave if I looked like this and had this job. They're playing a character. If you get a crush on Hermione Granger, don't start chasing down J.K. Rollins. She just wrote the character. She's not Harry Potter. And they don't see this. They really think that getting a couple texts here and there, I have come to know this person. And so they've got this real easy belief that they can check into for a few moments a day, texting back and forth, or even more, but it's not real. And even on, what's fascinating is on like, one out of every million episodes, it is the person in the picture. And they are the right age. And they check in two months later, and they are not lying, because you know what? In person, they just weren't the same person. It's kind of fascinating. Oh, it's really them. Oh yeah, but you know what? It's not them, because you weren't really interacting. If you can check in and check out of it, it's not a real relationship. So the question is, where's our relationship with God? Do we check in and check out? How disappointing is it gonna be when he walks out of heaven? Not what we expected. Not what we checked into for 60 minutes a week. Actually, I'm sure we'll be blown away in the other direction, but our faith too often becomes something we check into once in a while. Our prayer life, we check into. Our spirituality, we check into. We make plans for a big, long future of service. You know, most of us would, especially, I think this is one of those great moments in time where we all go, look, I wanna give my life to Jesus just as soon as that ball game is over. It's tough to have our discipleship call us in the next five minutes. And that's what these leaders are guilty of in this. They're not horrible, hateful people. He probably goes after them all a little more, the same reason we would. If you're gonna hold yourself out there as a moral leader, how often do we check in with our vocations? It's a great week. I'm going to end today by asking Alex Kroll, who is a seminarian, who the church has given him the gift of eight years of probably checking in with his vocation way more often than he should ever, ever have to. It's called seminary. And when I first got to seminary, there was a group, it was a pro-life group, but I just saw, the way my mind works with language, it said, seminarians for life. And I thought, how long are we gonna be here? It feels that way sometimes, but he is here to do our annual appeal for the seminary. So it is a great time for us to check into how we are doing moment by moment in our following of Jesus.
