Jesus told his disciples this parable. The kingdom of heaven will be like 10 virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them. But the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry. Behold, the bridegroom, come out to meet him. Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out. But the wise ones replied, no, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves. While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards, the other virgins came and said, Lord, Lord, open the door for us. But he said in reply, amen. I say to you, I do not know you. Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Tough wedding. Even tougher metaphor. It's one that people, you know, they've heard, oh, the wise virgins and the foolish virgins. And we don't really pull this apart. The problem with some of these metaphors is they're great metaphors for the kingdom of God, but they kind of fall apart at the human level because they're things that really don't happen at the human level. You know, you can't say, you know, love is a rose really doesn't mean anything if you've never seen a rose. I mean, we depend on the part of the metaphor that's supposed to make something for us. And this is a wedding, I'm assuming, like one you've never been to. First off, it's probably not, it's probably not an allusion to a Jewish wedding. Because even though there are some of the tidier English translations that take this to bridesmaids or maybe, you know, the allusion here is the bridegroom is waiting for 10 virgins. This is a 10 bride, one groom sort of wedding. I don't think I've been to more than one of those. So it's a little out of our experience to begin with. It's not really the picture of a wedding as we know it. And part of that is because this, of course, is the bride in this Matthew reading is already starting to take on that theology of the church. And Jesus being the bridegroom. And it's coming out of an experience of the community at the time this gospel's written, probably somewhere around the year 80, give or take, that they all thought the bridegroom, they all thought Jesus was going, the second coming was gonna happen before the death of the last apostle. And they've been watching him drop off one by one. And about now, they're feeling the bridegroom is late. The community is struggling for how do we keep waiting for Jesus to come back when it's becoming more and more apparent that it's probably not happening in our lifetime. It's not what was expected. And so it's definitely a story about, you know, well, be patient. Well, you know, it's not gonna happen when you expect. For most of us, it will not happen in our lifetime. Generations have come and gone. Every generation is, you know, unwilling to say out loud ahead of time, it's probably not in my lifetime. Because that almost feels like unfaithfulness. You know, that it could happen tomorrow. And so we end up with this parable that has at its heart a piece of theology that every preacher and every theologian, unless they've got a mean spiritedness to them, is very uncomfortable with. And it's that the wise maidens here are wise but uncaring. It's sort of, if we look at them as they're the ones that are going to heaven, they are the ones who, we got ours, we don't care about you. And it's a distasteful vision that if that's what heaven is full of, you know, hell, purgatory are looking pretty good at this point, you know, where the food's no good but the people are kinder. It tears apart, what is it? Well, I did it and you didn't. And it nurtures a sort of vision that some of us will merit heaven rather than none of us merit it. We get it through the grace of Jesus. And who merits it more is, you know, it's a little bit when we stand before God and hope that I will look better than the next person over. It, you know, it's like two garden slugs standing before a person thinking, I think they'll find me more attractive than that one. Which is not a horrible thing until, until the slugs start wounding one another to look better. We're all going to need this grace of God. So, for years I've toyed with this parable in different ways and tried to get my head around it. And I finally gave up yesterday and if anyone saw me at about noon, I was walking over from my office with a stack of Greek books about this big and slogged through this to try and figure out what's going on. Especially since whoever designed our lectionary, God love them. It's a little misleading until we put it next to the book of wisdom. They take the parable of these wise virgins and they say, let's pair it with the book of wisdom, which is not probably purposefully, but negligently misleading. Because the words both get translated into English as wisdom, but have nothing to do much with one another in their original languages. In the Old Testament, wisdom, the book of wisdom is it's not a female aspect of God. It is God, the entirety of God in female imagery. That's just so foreign to us that we don't really understand it. And I wanted to get one of these passages correct because I think people don't understand. So I'm taking out my Bible. I'm not tweeting, I promise. But in the book of wisdom, God, the great, the Hebrew Yahweh, the Ruach, all of that. In wisdom, this is a female character. But when someone says, well, I don't think they're really talking about God in that sense. This is from the 10th chapter. The holy people, wisdom, Solomon says, the holy people and their blameless descendants, it was she who rescued them from the nations that oppressed them. She who entered the soul of the Lord's servant withstood the kings. She who gave the holy ones the rewards of their labor. She who was their shelter from day, their light at night. She took them across the Red Sea. She brought them through the waters and she drowned their enemies, turning them up from the bottom. This is the Hebrew God. If it said he, you'd know exactly who they were talking about. But because it says she, we don't. Wisdom in the Old Testament is the essence of God. So when you take that and we say, well, we couldn't ask for more than to be like these wise women. Now we're misusing it because the word in the, so that's why I had to get all these books in what we call the Septuagint, and this is a little bit of a slog, so just stay with me. But the Septuagint is the oldest, the Greek translation of the Old Testament. You know, most of the Jewish people at the time of Jesus weren't running around speaking fluent Hebrew. They were living in Greek countries and the Old Testament had been translated into Greek by them. So they would, some of them, especially the less scholarly, might approach the Hebrew Bible the way I approach the Greek one, which is with a stack of books this big and go over, you know, I just don't flip through it and my fluent Greek just doesn't fall into place. I have to, so when I'm actually studying scripture, I will pull out the English translation. I'm practically fluent. So it's, you know, so they're doing that. They're pulling out the Septuagint, the Greek translation, and all of those images of wisdom is a word we're fairly familiar with, Sophia. Sophia is that Greek word. And Sophia is this imagery of, I mean, when you have Sophia, you are in the God mindset. You are with God and you are the perfect example of God. And Sophia, oh, they do it all up real nice. And then we get to these five women in the New Testament and the word Sophia is not used. The word phronimos, which means anything from well-prepared to shrewd. Oh, well shrewd, now I get it. They're shrewd. They've got all the details of this life in place. The other place it's used in the synoptics, one of the other places is in Luke, in the 16th chapter of Luke, at the eighth verse, where it's the dishonest steward, the one who goes out and scratches, it says, you know, the master awarded him because the children of this world are more prudent and shrewd with one another. Now, it wouldn't translate as because you dishonest people are more wise. Never have translated that one as wisdom. There's a sort of shrewd, you know, it would have been clunky to say there were five foolish virgins and five who were type A personalities. But that's sort of, I got everything in a row, I'm not gonna show up unprepared. These are the Boy Scouts you wanna travel with. But it doesn't set them up as an example of what it means to be close to God. It's just saying they're the ones that know how to plan ahead of time. The man who builds his house on stone, who has all of the right materials ready, same word, not Sophia. So once we back up and say, okay, so now let's use one of the common translations. There are five who are foolish and five who are prudent. Well, I know prudent people who aren't necessarily generous and compassionate, and that those don't always go together. But it's such a struggle for us to use the word wise and then say, so when we talk about this wisdom of God, compassion and mercy and caring about those who don't have shouldn't be part of it. So we first, we have to get those words separated from one another. And then say, so, what was the big moment that the other five had their epic failure? They didn't have an extra flask? Well, that's nice, but what if the bridegroom had been a whole nother day? They'd all have been out of oil. You know, some of them were lucky enough, they got the right amount, others weren't. So at what point did they have their epic failure? And when you start to figure out the translation, it becomes apparent that we've missed a crucial moment in this. What if they had shown up, if Jesus is the bridegroom, what if they had shown up with not enough oil? What if they'd just been brave enough to say, hey, not as prepared as them, but I'm showing up as who I am. Do we think Jesus would have slammed the door? Is the moment of foolishness when they hear someone else say, we're prepared, you're not. You go away, and we're going in. And they went to try to pick up someone else's journey and come back a little more acceptable. That's foolish. And we fall for it all the time. People are running around telling people which church they can belong to, which church they can't belong to, and everyone, and you have to, your journey has to look a little more like mine. And there are so many people, even in our own faith, where I always feel there are people who will say, you are welcome here. As long as you start to live a little more like I do, you're even more welcome. And if you could start to look like me, you know. It's not worth the hair loss. You know, we start to say, you're welcome when your spiritual journey mimics mine. I had a friend, a priest, who his superior wanted him to go on a retreat. They were going through some struggle, and he said, you know, I went on a 30-day silent Ignatian retreat once, and I really, really think that this would be good for you. And so he thought about it, and he said, you know, I'm gonna look into some programs. And he said, no, no, no, no, this program I did, this one in the Dakotas somewhere, oh, no, this is the one you should do. It's really, really good. Well, you know, 30-day silent retreat. I don't need to be, you know, in my favorite city. It's a 30-day silent retreat. That'll be fine, I'll just look through the spiritual directors. No, no, no, the one I used, and he said, I started to realize he didn't want me to go on a 30-day retreat. He wanted me to go on his 30-day retreat. Oh, this is the director I used, and this is the one. And as soon as you, you know, how many friends do you know that, oh, I have found the perfect diet? It worked for me, so it'll work for everyone. If it worked for everyone, you would sell a billion copies. Even modern medicine. Anyone who's ever dealt with cancer hears things constantly like, well, we've got a new treatment that works, and we think it works about 75% of the time. And what does that mean? It means it seems to work, but we don't know if it'll work on you, because we just don't know. There's some piece of, you know, idiosyncratic nature to this that we can't quite get our minds around, and what worked for one person doesn't work for another. And then we get people who think with spirituality, one size fits all. You know, either it's the spirituality of Jesus, or it's that, no, you cannot do the path of Jesus. He started as God. I don't mean to disappoint you, but your starting point was different. None of us started as God. We usually thought we got there by the time we were 16 or so, but we really didn't. You know, we don't have the same starting place. Someone comes to us, a spiritual guru, the worst thing we can start to do is to find a spiritual teacher and imitate them rather than be advised by them. You know, when you've got a companion, you don't really follow as much as you walk alongside. You cut your own path. It may be near to theirs, but this whole parable when we start to realize the difference between real wisdom and prudence, nothing wrong with prudence, but it's not the whole package. When we start to realize the difference, we go, so their mistake was, oh, we're not prepared the way they are. We can't go in. That was the moment of foolishness. That was the moment that they lost it, and then when they come back, it's already going. You know, I think most of us don't ever hit that point with that parable. We're too busy thinking of other things. It's so easy to let someone hijack the deeper meaning of something and make it something else. You know, yesterday, Veterans Day, I've always wondered why we didn't just create Veterans Day rather than take Armistice Day and rename it because they're not the same thing. You know, Armistice was disarmament, and Veterans Day, they said, you know, we gotta honor the veterans of all our wars. Good idea, but it wasn't, that's what that armistice was, was honoring the disarmament, and you know, and that poor holiday has had the worst history of any in our, you know, first, what was it, I think in 1938, they passed the Monday holiday thing. Have to do it on a Monday, you know, and they said, we'll move it to the nearest Monday, so I think the first time they finally celebrated it on a Monday was 72 or 74, and they celebrated it on October 25th. Now, I admit, I know a lot of people who grew up in the 70s, and we missed a few Mondays, but there's no way that was the closest Monday to November 11th, and then it took them about four years to say, okay, this is stupid, put it back on November 11th because we're moving it all over the place to find a Monday, but it's had this troubled history, and I always thought, why didn't they just keep armistice day and say, wow, if that's a good idea, put in another holiday and honor our veterans? You know, oh, let's change this one. It was still a great holiday, it was a good idea, you know, and why not have them both? Why not enrich ourselves? We do that with this parable. Instead of saying, well, you could take on that, as rabbis would, take on another image of this, but the original image is not that you had five failures and five A-pluses. No, no one in this looks really good. Even the bridegroom is sketchy. He shows up late, but how dare they show up late? Even the bridegroom is a sketchy character in this, and that's the beauty of the parables. You can reflect on them again and again from the viewpoints of different characters. You know, Jesus could have handed us an encyclopedia of moral behavior. Instead, he took the parables, and those of you who are mathematicians know that that word comes from the meaning of a shape that is open-ended. Never really has a conclusion to it, and it keeps us rediscovering. Today's, I really think, tells us, your path, it's the only path you get to heaven. You will not get to heaven imitating someone else's path, because they're not in the same place. That's why I always throw my hands up the air when someone says, you know, what would Jesus do? I've told you my problem with that. They're starving. What would Jesus do? He'd multiply bread. Let me know how that works for you. You have to go sacrifice and help and do something else. You don't have the Jesus skills. Wouldn't it be nice? We can't do that. We can imagine what does Jesus call us to do, but we're working with a slightly different skill set than God. And so, we ask God to make us a people that trust that God is here with us in our path, from where you're at at this moment to, you know, your final resting in heaven. There is your path, and it's not going to be anyone else's. And when someone else looks more prepared, so you start to jump and try and do their path, all you do is arrive at your own late. We ask God to make us a people that trust in the grace of our own spiritual journey. Trust that each of us is created by God. Each of us is given a destiny by God. Each of us is in relationship with God. The day you decide to walk someone else's path, you're never gonna get where they got.
