Glory to you, Lord. Jesus told his disciples this parable. A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to a third one, each according to his ability. Then he went away. After a long time, the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more. His master said to him, well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy. The Gospel of the Lord. There is both a long and a short version of today's Gospel. I chose the short because I think the vast majority of people know. They hear that much, they know the rest of the story. And then the man with five, it almost reads like a joke that begins with three people in a bar. And then the second one came forward. And he was only given two, and he brought two extras. And the last one, which is kind of the point of the whole story, is the last one knows that the master is someone who expects results. It says he sows where he does not reap. And he's a hard sort of taskmaster. And so the very last one kind of panics, and he doesn't want to risk investing. And so he just buries it in the ground and comes and says, here, here's your one back. I didn't lose any of it, but I didn't gain anything. And you know, it doesn't say it quite this way in scripture, but the master kind of goes off on him. What would be really helpful for those of us who look at this parable would be if there was a story as well of the person who went out courageously and invested but lost. What's the reaction to that person? Because that's really what we all kind of want to know. Should he have taken the risk? Now, the story clearly says yes, but we don't get the story of someone who took the risk and lost it. And our gut reaction, of course, is that it would be better to go out and risk and lose than just to play it too safe. And I think most of us and most scripture scholars go there with this parable, even though it's kind of missing that chunk for us. It really would be nice to hear what happens when you kind of risk it. We get a version of that. And it's often the Thanksgiving gospel. I haven't checked to see if it's what we're using this year. But we get a version of that in the story of the 10 lepers who are healed by Jesus. And he sends them all off to the priest to be healed. And along the way, as they recognize they're healed, one of them goes off script. And he comes back and he starts thanking Jesus. And the reaction is, where are the others? Well, the others are doing what they're told. They were playing it safe. And he does take a big risk. You know, he does take a risk. But we still don't quite get that real satisfying answer to what would have happened if the one with the five talents came back and said, I invested in this great plan for a pipeline through South Dakota. Now there's oil everywhere. What would have happened if he had done something disastrous? We don't know. We aren't given that. And so we have to always look at that with that. We wish we had it a little more solidly. But there's kind of almost a natural instinct in us to understand what the parable is really getting us to, which is whether or not we kind of waste the gifts we have in life. And not just the financial assets. This is often a stewardship weekend in parishes where we talk about stewardship. But also our talents and everything we've been given. And I think I almost wish these weekends were reversed. Because this is a great follow-up to Thanksgiving. Because I think the reason most of us don't share more of who we are is we haven't really acknowledged how much we've been given. How much we have to be grateful for. What it is, how many of these, you know, what it calls the talents, which unfortunately means something totally different nowadays. But all of these measures of good that God has given us to begin with. If we're unaware of that, it is a little harder to share in the world. And so we kind of look around. It's fallen on this, you know, World Day of the Poor. That Pope Francis, I don't know if any of you saw the news articles flying around. That in the Palo Sesto Hall, which is the, Paul VI Hall, which is in the, right off the Vatican, the famous Vatican, St. Peter's Square. And it's where the College of Cardinals often meets when they are having a consistory. So they set it for like 1500 and had a big banquet with the Pope and the homeless of Rome. And it was just kind of fascinating. And his whole approach to this has been, you know, it's in the poor that we find our vision of God. And I think a lot of us think that he's kind of talking about a sort of lovely, sentimental, when you have that kind of generosity and that kind of giving, you know, that you get this overwhelming sense of what God does when he helps. No, it's nothing that hallmark. It's not that goopy. He's really going back to the Old Testament and part of the New Testament that says, you know what, the vision they have, the vision the poor have of God is closer to the truth. Because they grow up and know, through so much of their life, they have this constant knowledge of how much they need. And where we think it could sort of be beating you down and it feels a little degrading to accept charity, it is. It's hard to accept charity. And most of us go through every day unaware of the charity we accept because it makes us feel better. God, the fact that you are alive and the poorest person on earth is alive means when it comes to God, you've both received the same measure of grace this day. But they're aware of it. We wake up and, you know, we look around at our lives and everything and we think, you know, this is what I've done for myself. This is what I've made for myself. This is how I've established myself. And we don't see that that's all from God because we have this myth of, you know, I always say the myth of the self-made man. There is no such thing. And so we have to get back behind these readings and start to see what's going on. And in Proverbs, we get this vision all through Proverbs. At the very end of the book, we have this thing of the worthy wife. And you really do have to learn to get beyond the inherent sexism of Scripture. It was written in a different culture. I mean, sometimes the people who are really fighting for social justice are still fighting from a culture where they're pushing the limits. And we look back years later and, you know, trust me, the proposition that all men are created equal was incredibly progressive. They had no idea that the word men only referred to half the human race. I mean, they just, the word was used differently. Now we look back and we go, well, you know, maybe we could have, and people will say, well, clearly they meant everyone. That's a nice rewrite. Maybe they did. It was a different culture. You know, when you say all men are created equal at a time when women weren't voting, you don't really believe. You actually believed that all men were created equal. It was still on the forefront of your generation. And the same thing is with Scripture. Sometimes there's these great, wonderful sayings, but you can see that they're only getting so far in their culture, and this is one of those moments, you know, when one has a worthy wife, she's worth more than pearls. If you put that next to the other things in the Old Testament, especially the Ten Commandments, you start to realize that, yes, they really are saying, of all of your possessions, your wife is the best one. Of everything you own, I hope you know that that's the most valuable. It is saying that, and we say, well, that's not what it's saying. You're ignoring history. Of course it's what it's saying. Read the Ten Commandments. You will not covet your neighbor's, you know, oxen. You will not covet their belongings. You will not covet their wife. I think she actually comes third in the list. Does it mean that, no, it means that they are writing from their cultural mindset. Anyone who thinks scripture was written outside of a culture is fooling themselves, and so we get this sense that there's this moment, though, where it's really talking about Israel, the community. Nowadays we would say the church is this worthy wife. We really do, and that's why we have to understand that the language is sexist, or we'll come to the wrong conclusion. It is saying that, and we say, or we'll come to the wrong conclusion. It is saying we are a belonging of God's. We do belong to God in a way that nowadays we would say a wife doesn't. That's why this doesn't work so well anymore, but we actually are a lesser spouse to God. It is not, our relationship with God is not a marriage-based inequality. It's God and us, and it says, and you know that we are worthy of this relationship when all, as it says here, all of those in her care are taken care of and doubly clothed. In other words, that's when we are the spouse of God. We are the spouse of God the day that everyone in our care is taken care of. That makes us the worthy, so it's not this, you know, people love this at funerals. If mom passed away, they'll read this because they kind of love it. Oh, you know, mom took care of everyone. It's really about the community. The bride of Christ is to take care of everyone, and then we're being worthy of being the community we claim to be. And so we look at that, and then we go and we say, so now what is this stewardship thing about? What have we been given? What are we doing to take care of others? Some people in the gospel, it doesn't tell you who you are. Some people are like Martha and Mary, who are clearly people with money. They have, we know they at least have a private garden. And we know that it says in the New Testament that there were many women who actually took care of this little group out of their means. And for a woman to be able to take care of someone out of their means, somehow she was able, she had to either inherit or still have an ability in that culture. It was a rare thing. But no one ever turns to them and says, like they do to the rich young man, give it all away. Each of us is called to do different stuff. It's not, do you give everything away? Do you manage everything you've had in such a way that it does the most good in the world? Not the most good in your life. Do we manage everything we have to do the most good in the world? That's, you know, that's an ongoing thing. Sometimes it's being responsible to what we have so it will be there, not just for our children, but for the world. Because the church is called to take care, as Pope said this weekend, we are called to take care of everyone. And then the scripture says, and those under your care had better be well fed and well clothed and taken care of. And so we get this real mandate. I always think that Christianity, I mentioned this at a school mass this week, Christianity gets one of our most important dynamics absolutely backwards most of the time. In American Christianity nowadays, this is not true all through history. But the dynamic is that we think religion is about getting you to think the right things about God. We profess the creed. It's important, I'm glad we profess it. But it's not the point. The point is not think all the right things, have all the right definitions, know all the right laws. That's what it means to be a good Catholic, is I follow every one of the rules. And then subsidiarily, if I've got time left over, we go out and we help the poor. No, the first one, the last one there, that's the mandatory one. What we do in the world is actually more important than whether I have the right thoughts about God. Because quite frankly, you'll never get God figured out anyway. I'm always surprised how often we use God as a distraction to the gospel. God becomes the distraction. I'm gonna ponder God and, you know, I'm gonna ponder and pray and hopefully God will feed the poor. No, no, he's got his job, we have ours. And our job is to go out and change the world. And that's what's difficult about our faith. Because throughout history, the church slowly has aligned itself and it's against its own roots. We align ourselves, it happens naturally, with establishment. We become the voice of the establishment. The original gospel was never the voice of the establishment. It always scares me to know. You know, first thing I realized when I was studying the scripture in seminary is that the only people Jesus gets mad at are the religious leaders. I mean, it's amazing, once we study that, we're still willing to become priests. We're the ones he gets mad at. He doesn't stand with the priests and look out to the people and say, you hypocrites. He always stands with them, looks at the religious leader and goes, you hypocrites. We're the ones that really seem to upset him the most. And so we have to always, you know, have that in mind as we minister, as we preach, as we do all these things. And then the level goes out. Those of us who are Christians working with non-Christians, we have to understand that that finger might be pointing back at us. The establishment is not ever where the church was meant to be. We were always meant to be the pilgrim church. Triumphant church happens after death. That's in heaven. We're the pilgrim church. We're the church that journeys through the world with those who have no home. And the Pope says this over and over and over again, and it's interesting to watch the backlash against it. You know, tell us we're holy, but don't give us a mission. That will never happen. That will never happen. The gospel will not be there to tell us when we're being holy or not. It will be there to tell us what we do next, where the mission is, everything we've been given. Hopefully we do go out and invest it in others. And sometimes that will go well. Mother Teresa always reminds us, you are called to be faithful, not successful. And I always think that's the line I want to hear in that gospel today, is you're not called to be successful. You were called to be faithful. You are called to be courageous. You are called to be able to speak your mind. And it may work out well for you. Those who have an earthly vision would tell you it didn't work out well for Jesus. Peter tried to talk him out of it. We're called not to side with that. We're called to side with the Jesus vision that says we're called to be faithful. We cannot control the world's reaction to it. But we're called to go out and change the world. And if we're too stuck in our establishment, we don't want change. It's comfortable. But like the pope, when we align with the poor, we will see the need for change.
