The Lord be with you, O Lord. Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, this is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him. When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came, touched them, and said, rise, do not be afraid. And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The transfiguration, which we get, you know, it only comes on Sunday about once every seven years, because it's a feast that's by the solar year. It's August 6th every year, no matter what day it falls on. This transfiguration is August 6th. And it's a feast where we look to this moment where they finally see Jesus as he is, as he always has been. And in this case, because there's a graced moment, a miraculous moment, where their eyes are open and they're able to see it. For most of us, the transfiguration has to happen in the exact opposite way. We have to finally be willing to let people see who we are. It's not that they don't have eyes that can see, it's that we've got barriers and facades up right and left so that no one sees who we are. As a matter of fact, even when we think of people in our life that we say, you know, they're just, you know, there's no duplicitness at all. They're just, that's exactly who they are. I don't know, it's so hard to really just be who you are at all times, you know. There's always, we've got so many layers of cultural meaning on everything we do. You know, when you're speaking with someone and you yawn. Now, we now know that means you needed oxygen. It doesn't really mean they're boring. But someone told you that it means they're boring and now you don't want them to think that you think they're boring and so you try not to yawn. We just, the layers of facade that we get going on. You know, if you could see me as I truly am, I've probably been sleeping for 40 minutes. It's been a long morning. You know, I mean, there's always appearance and transfiguration is all about the appearance of Jesus that changes. None of the core, he doesn't become something he wasn't before. It's just the appearance. And in all of our lives, there sort of comes various times when who we are appearing to be in the world is no longer containing the reality of who we wanna be. I have known people over the years, it's almost comical sometimes when you see people who are just so comfortable with who they are. It's just, there's a real transparency. There was a man in my last parish, Bud Lederhaus. I've never met anyone mean enough to not like Bud Lederhaus. He was the nicest man I'd ever met. And he just, I think some people thought he was sort of simple in the head. He wasn't. It's just that if the nuclear bomb went off and he saw the wave coming and knew there was nothing he could do, he'd be like, oh, this is gonna hurt. He just didn't get panicky over things. And the story I will always remember about him because I've never seen a slower burn laugh in a church. I mean, for like five minutes, people couldn't keep it together. Bud was reading and he gets up, and St. Rose was an old box church, I mean, you know, just straight aisle up the center. And he comes up and he opens up and he starts reading. At about the time he pulls the book out, a boxer dog whose head was about up to here had gotten in the back of church and comes trotting down the aisle. And everyone in the church sees it but Bud, and he just opens it up and he says, you know, a reading from the book of the prophet Daniel. As I watched, oh, hi, pooch. Thomas. And he just goes right on like nothing has happened. And the dog turns around and trots back out. And little by little, everyone looks at each other like, did that just happen? And everyone starts giggling, Bud, just kept reading, got done. There's something so attractive and charming about someone who is just who they are. It's a rare moment. And this story has two levels to it. First, there's this moment where they see Jesus as he is, but then, even more, it sort of deconstructs their faith. Because the vision becomes everything that it would be for you and I, too. First, what they do is they see Jesus, and as they start to see him, they begin to see what they need him to be. They see him with Moses and Elijah, the law and the prophets of their faith. Moses, the great bringer of the law, Elijah, the great prophet. They see him with the law and the prophets because that's the context that makes sense for them for the Messiah they were waiting for. And then the voice comes and says, listen to him, and the law, Moses, is gone, and Elijah, the prophets, is gone, and they're left with this gospel of Jesus. We can't get our head around the shockingly, just gratingly new direction that that must have heralded for them. It's almost, you know, for a Catholic, that is, you know, having a vision of someone that you've just met in the last couple years who seems to, you know, have a nice spirituality, and you listen to them a lot, and all of a sudden you have a vision of them with the pope and the saints on one side and Mary, mother of God, on the other, and you think, well, there they are. That's Catholicism. And then the voice of God says, oh, listen to that one, and the pope and the saints disappear. And Mary, mother of God, disappears. And God says, oh, no, just listen to that one. I mean, their faith was deconstructed right in front of them and they're left with this gospel of Jesus, and Jesus just gives them a mission. He doesn't give them all the tricks to save themselves. He gives them a mission in the world. In recent times, there've been some of the voices locally that have said, we were at a conference for Catholic schools and one of the voices locally in the church says, our job is to get these children to heaven. Now, being a little cantankerous, I had a plan for that. I said, what we need to do is get God to send his son to die on the cross. Oh, wait, no, it's already been done. Maybe our job isn't to get them to heaven. Maybe our job is to get them to be good people in the world, to give them the gospel, not this trapping or that trapping, the gospel. You know, I was very happy, you know, we're unfolding after mass. You can go in and see all the new plans for the building we're building, and I love that we're doing that on Transfiguration Sunday. We are changing our appearance to match the amazing amount of work that this parish does internally and has always done. And we've grown to our edges, and so we're building a new space to put ministries out of and to be able to welcome people in in new ways, and we've outgrown our appearance in the world. And it's fascinating to watch, as I now look at the new plans came in. It really is fun to go look at those pictures after mass. It's in the RCIA room. And after mass, a lot is happening, I'm telling you right now. They're in there, and we're still getting pledges, we're still getting money, so we're still asking for money for the building project, and I'll tell you the numbers in a minute. We're also asking for school supplies. And wouldn't you know, this week is the blood drive. So those of you who keep thinking, what are they gonna ask for next, blood? And just when you think we've crossed every other line, October, which is vocations month, is right around the corner, and we'll be asking for your children. But it's fascinating to watch when a community says, look, there's a lot of trappings. There's a lot of people who their entire faith is, did they wear the right color that week, and did they, oh, was the prayer, were those the right words, and did all the formulas get done? And then there are those who have that core of a gospel that say, no, our job is to do what we need so that we can reach as many people as we can. And some of that is transfiguration. In other words, some of that is our physical appearance in the world that we have to have to have a base to work out of. The opposite in theology, believe it or not, the opposite of transfiguration is transubstantiation. Transubstantiation means the appearance of the bread does not change at all. All the parts of the bread that you think, when people say, well, does it still have this, Pope Paul VI, I think, put it best. None of the, the way he put it, none of the molecular structure of the bread is disturbed. If you need science, you know, that's science. When you hear about someone who says in Europe, they had a miracle and they sliced the host and stained it and put it under and saw human blood cells, or that was a thing that was done back in the 70s, basically someone desecrated a host, nothing else happened there. And they came up with the result they wanted. The bread is molecularly bread, but the substance, the soul, the spirit, something underneath that changes. Transubstantiation says nothing of Jesus changed, just the appearance, because, as we hear in the prayers, because they were going to need that. The disciples were gonna need that vision to get through the hard times ahead. In order for them to do the mission they needed, they were gonna need something more hopeful to work out of. And so, you know, for us as a parish, I'm shocked. I mean, we've only gotten about half of the parish in so far, and we are at 6.43 million. I mean, we're at two thirds of our need. We're looking at about two million more. And these numbers to me are huge, but what you'll see in the drawings is we've moved the big building over to this side of the campus, instead of popping the top and going up two stories, because being on Harrison changes everything. I have learned words I never thought I'd know. It turns out that an easement is not when my siblings come in from out of town to help with mom. That is, you know, and water tables are not sold at Bed Bath & Beyond. I didn't know any of this stuff. Water table over here is different, so when we put the building over here, we can have a basement. We can have a full basement, meeting rooms, great stuff. You know, but all of this, all of this transfiguring has to do with the fact that who we have become as a mission has outgrown the physical presence in the world, and that's amazingly good news. It's so amazing to watch a parish who, you know, I'll be honest, 16 years ago when they redid this space, they lost seating because they felt the community was getting smaller. You know, it was gonna be, we were gonna have a little more of an intimate feel. This community is growing at an amazing rate, and we're right now adding about 150 families a year. I was gonna put a sign out, you know, our little school sign. The principal wouldn't let me put out accepting applications for 2025. We are gaining, it's a growing venture, and you know, as I mentioned earlier this year, we've had service days where families come to help the poor, and we've actually had, one time we had like 250 families show up, and after that we had to start telling volunteers, no more volunteers can come to help the poor this weekend. We don't have room. It's kind of a dream problem to have. Too many people wanting to help the poor. And so it's exciting to see, but that's transfiguration. Who we are is still who we are. The appearance is gonna change. We've got a great architect who is, I do hope as many of you can, you'll have to go back to the RCIA room. We were gonna do it outside, and we got one of the three rainy mornings we've had this summer, so it's in the RCIA room, but I hope after mass you'll go look at that, because it is exciting to see a new appearance, but as exciting as it is, what is most exciting is that what's inside the appearance, the community, is still a group that doesn't get caught up in the momentary charisma of prophecies, doesn't get caught up in the minutia of the law, but has a core that is the gospel of Christ, and as long as that is our core, our appearance can change a million times, and we will still
