Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus told his disciples this parable, the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about 9 o'clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, you too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just. So they went off. He went out again around noon and around 3 o'clock and did likewise. Finally, going out about 5 o'clock, the landowner found others standing around and said to them, why do you stand here idle all day? They answered, because no one has hired us. He said to them, you too go into my vineyard. When it was evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first. When those who started about 5 o'clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it, they grumbled against the landowner saying, these last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and the heat. He said to one of them in reply, my friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you, or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous? Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you. The most hated gospel passage in America, because we are really good when the gospel undermines other cultures. We're really good when it tells those people what they're doing wrong. Today's gospel, there's no way around it. I have watched people do gymnastics to get around this gospel. But it's clear that Jesus would probably not favor radical capitalism as it has developed. And as I say it, you know, you can just feel the clenching going on in the room. But it gives us an amazing moment that says, so what, forget arguing until you're blue in the face as to whether that's what, that's not what he meant. That's not what he meant. The real question is, what if it came down to it would be more fundamental? Your love for the economic system or your love for Jesus? If it could be shown beyond all doubt that Jesus was, and I'm going to say the ugly word, a socialist, we would have one of three possibilities. And I think we take the third. We would either convert our economic system, not likely. We would leave our Christianity, not likely. Or we would pretend not to see the problem, very likely. We would just live and pretend the conflict isn't there. Because Jesus gives each one what they need. There's an old saying that says, life isn't fair, but we can be. And many of them would say, well, this isn't fair. Because we have a different form of justice in our mind. We have a competitive justice. And what we think is, well, some people have to be given more than others because they did more. And this is why I always say the tension here is between our love for Jesus and our love for Satan. This Lucifer character in mythology, whether we call it Lucifer, Satan, the devil, whether it's a personification, whether it's a real person, theologians can argue that on their own. But as I was watching an old episode of Law and Order this week, I know it was a slow news day at the Dolan House. And towards the end, the character, you just can't really be sure whether they're working the system, or whether they really aren't quite there, or whether they really knew. And in the end, the jury can't convict. And it's very unsatisfying. Because in the absence of an absolute answer, the jury chooses mercy and compassion. And it's irritating. The script is done in such a way that you know that they left you hanging. And they wanted it to be unsatisfying. And what would have satisfied us is, I think they hurt someone, and they need to hurt just as much. That is the essence of our entire belief in hell. They didn't do well, and now they're going to get punished. And this devil character is the one that's going to mete out that punishment eternally. We're much more connected to that character emotionally than the one who comes in and says, we're going to let him off the hook. And just like the characters in today's gospel, we kind of hope God is compassionate enough to overlook my incredibly minor flaws. But some of you have gone too far. And where is the line between acceptable sin you can still get in, and unacceptable, and judgment needs to happen? Never sure where the line is, but we're always pretty sure which side of it we're on. It's usually the line between me and mine, and them and theirs. And so we love the idea. You look back at most of our movies and our entertainments that filter around justice, and until the bad guy is punished, the movie is not satisfying. We are much more connected to the work of the devil, which is get those people punished. And mercy leaves us wanting, and that's what today's gospel is about. You know, it's, ah, these guys couldn't find a job, and so he finally hires them at the end of the day, but he still gives them a full day's wage because that's what they'll need to live on. That kind of generosity, it just undoes my whole system. It's very tough, and it's very easy when we find gospels that attack other people's precious, beloved, sacred cows. But this one comes after one of ours, which is that belief that if I can work a little harder and work the system right, and I have all those talents that happen to be, you know, sort of fashionable at the moment, I should not be able to do well. I should be able to do better, better than others. Even though at any given moment, you know, I mean, quite frankly, I don't care how good the voice is, singing a song really doesn't do more for a culture than educating our children. So there's no justice as to the value of the work. It's just whatever culture's fascinated with at the moment. We're usually fascinated with some form of entertainment or another, and people who can be part of that entertainment will make a lot more than people who maybe are out there building our roads and bridges, educating our children, you know, the people who are the structure of our society. And we all want to, you know, who knows whether your talent is appreciated in the culture you're in. A hundred years ago, a talent another person has might have gotten ahead. So it's always this dance between the individual's abilities and what culture needs at that moment. And we have made it sort of a competitive thing that says, when do we start to recognize that what you and I think is fair usually isn't? We can see it when it's dramatic. We can look at someone that we would say has special needs, and if it's dramatic enough, we go, oh, well, you know, we can't expect as much of them. But if it's just emotional depression, they should buck up. If it's just little problems, we have this syndrome in our life where it's what I call, and I apologize for the language, it's a television thing. Anyone here ever used to watch Everyone Loves Raymond? The show should have been called Everyone Loves Debra Loves Raymond. One of Debra's famous lines that she would say his wife, at least once an episode, he would do something rather foolish, and she would say, moron. Word came out of her mouth all the time. And it's what I call the moron syndrome. When someone does something that we think, what an idiot, what we're really thinking is, they have all the skills I have, and they just chose to be that way. We really don't think, if we really thought they were an idiot or a moron, if we really thought they didn't have those skills, we would be much more compassionate. What we're really thinking is, they have all the skills I have, and they're just being irritating on purpose. Or, they're just as smart as me, and they disagree with me, which I can't even fathom. How could anyone smart still disagree with me? We go to all these places, rather than, maybe they're doing the best they can, and maybe I should be happy that I can do more. Maybe I have an energy they don't have. Maybe I have an ability they don't have. I've told this story before. It's always the most embarrassing story I tell every year. But it's a traffic story. And it's not that anything happened, it's just everything that went on in my head, as I'm behind someone who is driving, I mean, literally has the nerve to drive a speed I don't like. It's a crazy world out there. They're going probably 10 miles an hour, and it's probably 35. And I'm waiting, because it's one lane, waiting, waiting, and I know that just a few blocks ahead, there'll finally be two lanes, and I can get around this person. And as I finally get around and I look over, it's someone in their early 20s, clearly with a mild case of Down syndrome, whose parent is just thrilled that they're actually learning to drive. And immediately I think, what is wrong with me? What is wrong with me? Because the whole time I'm thinking, why is this person driving slow? They have a different skill set. They're at a different place. Now, what if I'd looked over, and there were no pronounced issues that I could witness or observe? Then I would have said, they're just like me, and they're just choosing to be irritating, because we can't see the smaller gradations. Or the more devastating message, they're smarter than me and not as in big of a hurry. You know, why we just can't see the differences, why we can't leave room for that, and assume, you know, that all of us will need mercy in the end. And who am I, as someone who needs mercy, to resent that someone else might get more mercy? That we might all make it to heaven, because God is generous with his gifts, rather than, oh no, no, no, I, you know, I want God to be generous enough that some of us get in, but I don't want God to be generous enough to let the people who have hurt me in life get in. That's why God says, I desire forgiveness, I desire mercy, I desire compassion, you know. And then there's a little line that always says, I desire these things more than sacrifice. You know that's a trick in scripture. Because real mercy and real forgiveness will always involve a little sacrifice. It's always there. He's telling us the kind of sacrifice that he would like us to make. And we're really good at burning incense, but, you know, letting go of our anger, letting that go up in smoke, not so much. Most of us have old hurts, and we still behave out of those hurts. We run around trying to say, I'm gonna try and be less angry. The problem is we need to be more healed. Everyone in your life that you've had a long going battle with, and you think, I can't let it go, it's because you're still hurt, not because you're still angry. Anger's just the way we distract ourselves, because, you know, when I'm angry at you, that just feels stronger than admitting I'm hurt. Admitting I'm hurt, that just doesn't have quite as much bravado as anger. Actually, usually hurt. We're hurt by injustices. And instead, what we have to do is get to that point where we want everyone to succeed. I think that's such an interesting, simple concept, but when we look at all the tensions in our country, rather than trying to figure out which side is right, do we want everyone to succeed? Or do we just not, can we not go there? I'm still too hurt by the other guys. But if we ever become a group of people, a country, a church, a culture, that wants everyone to succeed, then maybe for the first time, we will understand the mercy of God, who comes not to save those who are doing just the right things, but even to save those who would crucify Him. The ones who would hurt Him to save everyone. I think when we become that culture, we start to manifest for the rest of the world what it would look like to live in the kingdom of God.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 1.0, WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.000 The Lord be with you. 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:02.759 And with your spirit. 00:00:02.759 --> 00:00:04.960 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. 00:00:04.960 --> 00:00:08.760 Glory to you, O Lord. 00:00:08.760 --> 00:00:11.000 Jesus told his disciples this parable, 00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:13.600 the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner 00:00:13.600 --> 00:00:17.360 who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. 00:00:17.360 --> 00:00:19.920 After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, 00:00:19.920 --> 00:00:22.399 he sent them into his vineyard. 00:00:22.399 --> 00:00:25.120 Going out about 9 o'clock, the landowner 00:00:25.120 --> 00:00:28.440 saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 00:00:28.440 --> 00:00:31.479 and he said to them, you too go into my vineyard, 00:00:31.479 --> 00:00:34.360 and I will give you what is just. 00:00:34.360 --> 00:00:35.779 So they went off. 00:00:35.779 --> 00:00:38.720 He went out again around noon and around 3 o'clock 00:00:38.720 --> 00:00:40.319 and did likewise. 00:00:40.319 --> 00:00:42.560 Finally, going out about 5 o'clock, 00:00:42.560 --> 00:00:45.080 the landowner found others standing around and said to 00:00:45.080 --> 00:00:49.119 them, why do you stand here idle all day? 00:00:49.119 --> 00:00:52.119 They answered, because no one has hired us. 00:00:52.119 --> 00:00:55.080 He said to them, you too go into my vineyard. 00:00:55.080 --> 00:00:56.919 When it was evening, the owner of the vineyard 00:00:56.919 --> 00:00:58.759 said to his foreman, summon the laborers 00:00:58.759 --> 00:01:00.919 and give them their pay, beginning with the last 00:01:00.919 --> 00:01:02.959 and ending with the first. 00:01:02.959 --> 00:01:05.680 When those who started about 5 o'clock came, 00:01:05.680 --> 00:01:08.440 each received the usual daily wage. 00:01:08.440 --> 00:01:09.980 So when the first came, they thought 00:01:09.980 --> 00:01:11.639 they would receive more, but each of them 00:01:11.639 --> 00:01:14.440 also got the usual wage. 00:01:14.440 --> 00:01:16.879 And on receiving it, they grumbled against the landowner 00:01:16.879 --> 00:01:20.360 saying, these last ones worked only one hour, 00:01:20.360 --> 00:01:23.400 and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's 00:01:23.400 --> 00:01:25.599 burden and the heat. 00:01:25.599 --> 00:01:27.639 He said to one of them in reply, my friend, 00:01:27.639 --> 00:01:28.559 I am not cheating you. 00:01:28.559 --> 00:01:31.879 Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? 00:01:31.879 --> 00:01:33.919 Take what is yours and go. 00:01:33.919 --> 00:01:37.519 What if I wish to give this last one the same as you, 00:01:37.519 --> 00:01:41.199 or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? 00:01:41.199 --> 00:01:44.839 Are you envious because I am generous? 00:01:44.839 --> 00:01:49.440 Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last. 00:01:49.440 --> 00:01:51.360 The Gospel of the Lord. 00:01:51.360 --> 00:01:53.440 Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:56.599 --> 00:01:59.400 Thank you. 00:01:59.400 --> 00:02:04.919 The most hated gospel passage in America, 00:02:04.919 --> 00:02:11.639 because we are really good when the gospel undermines 00:02:11.639 --> 00:02:13.880 other cultures. 00:02:13.880 --> 00:02:15.919 We're really good when it tells those people 00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:18.119 what they're doing wrong. 00:02:18.119 --> 00:02:21.360 Today's gospel, there's no way around it. 00:02:21.360 --> 00:02:23.720 I have watched people do gymnastics 00:02:23.720 --> 00:02:25.399 to get around this gospel. 00:02:26.199 --> 00:02:29.720 But it's clear that Jesus would probably not favor 00:02:29.720 --> 00:02:34.039 radical capitalism as it has developed. 00:02:34.039 --> 00:02:36.800 And as I say it, you know, you can just feel 00:02:36.800 --> 00:02:40.160 the clenching going on in the room. 00:02:40.160 --> 00:02:44.080 But it gives us an amazing moment that says, 00:02:44.080 --> 00:02:47.759 so what, forget arguing until you're blue in the face 00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:49.759 as to whether that's what, that's not what he meant. 00:02:49.759 --> 00:02:51.399 That's not what he meant. 00:02:51.440 --> 00:02:56.520 The real question is, what if it came down to it 00:02:56.520 --> 00:02:59.559 would be more fundamental? 00:02:59.559 --> 00:03:04.080 Your love for the economic system or your love for Jesus? 00:03:04.080 --> 00:03:09.520 If it could be shown beyond all doubt that Jesus was, 00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:15.880 and I'm going to say the ugly word, a socialist, 00:03:15.880 --> 00:03:17.839 we would have one of three possibilities. 00:03:17.839 --> 00:03:19.600 And I think we take the third. 00:03:19.600 --> 00:03:24.639 We would either convert our economic system, not likely. 00:03:24.639 --> 00:03:27.919 We would leave our Christianity, not likely. 00:03:27.919 --> 00:03:32.759 Or we would pretend not to see the problem, very likely. 00:03:32.759 --> 00:03:36.520 We would just live and pretend the conflict isn't there. 00:03:36.520 --> 00:03:40.119 Because Jesus gives each one what they need. 00:03:40.119 --> 00:03:42.119 There's an old saying that says, life isn't fair, 00:03:42.119 --> 00:03:42.919 but we can be. 00:03:42.919 --> 00:03:46.360 And many of them would say, well, this isn't fair. 00:03:46.360 --> 00:03:49.960 Because we have a different form of justice in our mind. 00:03:49.960 --> 00:03:53.600 We have a competitive justice. 00:03:53.600 --> 00:03:55.880 And what we think is, well, some people 00:03:55.880 --> 00:03:59.559 have to be given more than others because they did more. 00:03:59.559 --> 00:04:04.720 And this is why I always say the tension here 00:04:04.720 --> 00:04:09.199 is between our love for Jesus and our love for Satan. 00:04:09.199 --> 00:04:12.440 This Lucifer character in mythology, 00:04:12.440 --> 00:04:14.440 whether we call it Lucifer, Satan, the devil, 00:04:14.440 --> 00:04:16.279 whether it's a personification, whether it's 00:04:16.279 --> 00:04:19.760 a real person, theologians can argue that on their own. 00:04:19.760 --> 00:04:25.119 But as I was watching an old episode of Law and Order 00:04:25.119 --> 00:04:31.040 this week, I know it was a slow news day at the Dolan House. 00:04:31.040 --> 00:04:35.359 And towards the end, the character, 00:04:35.359 --> 00:04:37.799 you just can't really be sure whether they're 00:04:37.799 --> 00:04:41.839 working the system, or whether they really aren't quite there, 00:04:41.839 --> 00:04:43.559 or whether they really knew. 00:04:43.559 --> 00:04:46.760 And in the end, the jury can't convict. 00:04:46.760 --> 00:04:49.959 And it's very unsatisfying. 00:04:49.959 --> 00:04:56.720 Because in the absence of an absolute answer, 00:04:56.720 --> 00:05:00.720 the jury chooses mercy and compassion. 00:05:00.720 --> 00:05:04.399 And it's irritating. 00:05:04.399 --> 00:05:06.760 The script is done in such a way that you 00:05:06.760 --> 00:05:09.200 know that they left you hanging. 00:05:09.200 --> 00:05:12.600 And they wanted it to be unsatisfying. 00:05:12.600 --> 00:05:15.119 And what would have satisfied us is, 00:05:15.119 --> 00:05:16.640 I think they hurt someone, and they 00:05:16.640 --> 00:05:18.959 need to hurt just as much. 00:05:18.959 --> 00:05:23.880 That is the essence of our entire belief in hell. 00:05:23.880 --> 00:05:27.320 They didn't do well, and now they're going to get punished. 00:05:27.320 --> 00:05:29.720 And this devil character is the one 00:05:29.720 --> 00:05:33.559 that's going to mete out that punishment eternally. 00:05:33.559 --> 00:05:36.119 We're much more connected to that character 00:05:36.119 --> 00:05:40.119 emotionally than the one who comes in and says, 00:05:40.119 --> 00:05:43.000 we're going to let him off the hook. 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:47.559 And just like the characters in today's gospel, 00:05:47.559 --> 00:05:49.559 we kind of hope God is compassionate enough 00:05:49.559 --> 00:05:55.239 to overlook my incredibly minor flaws. 00:05:55.239 --> 00:05:59.200 But some of you have gone too far. 00:05:59.200 --> 00:06:03.480 And where is the line between acceptable sin 00:06:03.480 --> 00:06:06.519 you can still get in, and unacceptable, 00:06:06.519 --> 00:06:08.880 and judgment needs to happen? 00:06:08.880 --> 00:06:11.239 Never sure where the line is, but we're always pretty sure 00:06:11.239 --> 00:06:13.480 which side of it we're on. 00:06:13.480 --> 00:06:19.000 It's usually the line between me and mine, and them and theirs. 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:22.239 And so we love the idea. 00:06:22.239 --> 00:06:27.320 You look back at most of our movies and our entertainments 00:06:27.320 --> 00:06:33.920 that filter around justice, and until the bad guy is punished, 00:06:33.920 --> 00:06:37.119 the movie is not satisfying. 00:06:37.119 --> 00:06:40.959 We are much more connected to the work of the devil, 00:06:40.959 --> 00:06:45.320 which is get those people punished. 00:06:45.320 --> 00:06:49.200 And mercy leaves us wanting, 00:06:49.200 --> 00:06:51.720 and that's what today's gospel is about. 00:06:51.720 --> 00:06:54.160 You know, it's, ah, these guys couldn't find a job, 00:06:54.160 --> 00:06:56.160 and so he finally hires them at the end of the day, 00:06:56.160 --> 00:06:57.880 but he still gives them a full day's wage 00:06:57.880 --> 00:07:02.920 because that's what they'll need to live on. 00:07:02.920 --> 00:07:07.559 That kind of generosity, it just undoes my whole system. 00:07:07.559 --> 00:07:10.920 It's very tough, and it's very easy 00:07:10.920 --> 00:07:13.279 when we find gospels that attack 00:07:13.279 --> 00:07:17.559 other people's precious, beloved, sacred cows. 00:07:17.559 --> 00:07:20.359 But this one comes after one of ours, 00:07:20.359 --> 00:07:24.200 which is that belief that if I can work a little harder 00:07:24.200 --> 00:07:27.279 and work the system right, and I have all those talents 00:07:27.279 --> 00:07:31.000 that happen to be, you know, sort of fashionable 00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:34.880 at the moment, I should not be able to do well. 00:07:34.880 --> 00:07:40.600 I should be able to do better, better than others. 00:07:40.600 --> 00:07:44.040 Even though at any given moment, you know, I mean, 00:07:44.040 --> 00:07:47.239 quite frankly, I don't care how good the voice is, 00:07:47.239 --> 00:07:50.359 singing a song really doesn't do more for a culture 00:07:50.359 --> 00:07:53.000 than educating our children. 00:07:53.000 --> 00:07:57.119 So there's no justice as to the value of the work. 00:07:57.320 --> 00:08:00.920 It's just whatever culture's fascinated with at the moment. 00:08:00.920 --> 00:08:03.720 We're usually fascinated with some form of entertainment 00:08:03.720 --> 00:08:06.519 or another, and people who can be part of that entertainment 00:08:06.519 --> 00:08:11.519 will make a lot more than people who maybe are out there 00:08:11.519 --> 00:08:15.320 building our roads and bridges, educating our children, 00:08:15.320 --> 00:08:19.959 you know, the people who are the structure of our society. 00:08:19.959 --> 00:08:23.200 And we all want to, you know, who knows 00:08:23.200 --> 00:08:25.480 whether your talent is appreciated 00:08:25.480 --> 00:08:27.239 in the culture you're in. 00:08:27.239 --> 00:08:30.040 A hundred years ago, a talent another person has 00:08:30.040 --> 00:08:31.359 might have gotten ahead. 00:08:31.359 --> 00:08:34.200 So it's always this dance between the individual's abilities 00:08:34.200 --> 00:08:36.880 and what culture needs at that moment. 00:08:36.880 --> 00:08:40.880 And we have made it sort of a competitive thing 00:08:40.880 --> 00:08:43.559 that says, when do we start to recognize 00:08:43.559 --> 00:08:47.679 that what you and I think is fair usually isn't? 00:08:47.679 --> 00:08:50.559 We can see it when it's dramatic. 00:08:50.559 --> 00:08:52.200 We can look at someone that we would say 00:08:52.200 --> 00:08:55.200 has special needs, and if it's dramatic enough, 00:08:55.200 --> 00:09:00.200 we go, oh, well, you know, we can't expect as much of them. 00:09:00.280 --> 00:09:05.280 But if it's just emotional depression, they should buck up. 00:09:06.440 --> 00:09:11.400 If it's just little problems, we have this syndrome 00:09:11.400 --> 00:09:14.320 in our life where it's what I call, 00:09:14.320 --> 00:09:17.640 and I apologize for the language, it's a television thing. 00:09:17.640 --> 00:09:20.719 Anyone here ever used to watch Everyone Loves Raymond? 00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:23.400 The show should have been called 00:09:23.400 --> 00:09:25.599 Everyone Loves Debra Loves Raymond. 00:09:26.960 --> 00:09:30.200 One of Debra's famous lines that she would say his wife, 00:09:30.200 --> 00:09:33.239 at least once an episode, he would do something 00:09:33.239 --> 00:09:36.239 rather foolish, and she would say, moron. 00:09:37.559 --> 00:09:39.280 Word came out of her mouth all the time. 00:09:39.280 --> 00:09:42.919 And it's what I call the moron syndrome. 00:09:42.919 --> 00:09:45.400 When someone does something that we think, 00:09:45.400 --> 00:09:48.960 what an idiot, what we're really thinking is, 00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:50.599 they have all the skills I have, 00:09:50.599 --> 00:09:52.440 and they just chose to be that way. 00:09:53.719 --> 00:09:57.039 We really don't think, if we really thought 00:09:57.039 --> 00:09:58.520 they were an idiot or a moron, 00:09:58.520 --> 00:10:01.679 if we really thought they didn't have those skills, 00:10:01.679 --> 00:10:03.599 we would be much more compassionate. 00:10:04.640 --> 00:10:06.080 What we're really thinking is, 00:10:06.080 --> 00:10:08.000 they have all the skills I have, 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:11.760 and they're just being irritating on purpose. 00:10:11.760 --> 00:10:14.640 Or, they're just as smart as me, 00:10:14.640 --> 00:10:17.799 and they disagree with me, which I can't even fathom. 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:21.640 How could anyone smart still disagree with me? 00:10:23.359 --> 00:10:26.159 We go to all these places, rather than, 00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:28.840 maybe they're doing the best they can, 00:10:28.840 --> 00:10:32.559 and maybe I should be happy that I can do more. 00:10:33.440 --> 00:10:35.479 Maybe I have an energy they don't have. 00:10:35.479 --> 00:10:38.359 Maybe I have an ability they don't have. 00:10:38.359 --> 00:10:40.400 I've told this story before. 00:10:40.400 --> 00:10:43.520 It's always the most embarrassing story I tell every year. 00:10:43.520 --> 00:10:46.119 But it's a traffic story. 00:10:46.119 --> 00:10:47.640 And it's not that anything happened, 00:10:47.640 --> 00:10:50.119 it's just everything that went on in my head, 00:10:50.119 --> 00:10:53.640 as I'm behind someone who is driving, 00:10:53.640 --> 00:10:55.359 I mean, literally has the nerve 00:10:55.359 --> 00:10:57.359 to drive a speed I don't like. 00:10:59.479 --> 00:11:01.200 It's a crazy world out there. 00:11:03.119 --> 00:11:05.719 They're going probably 10 miles an hour, 00:11:05.719 --> 00:11:07.440 and it's probably 35. 00:11:08.400 --> 00:11:10.359 And I'm waiting, because it's one lane, 00:11:10.359 --> 00:11:13.119 waiting, waiting, and I know that just a few blocks ahead, 00:11:13.119 --> 00:11:14.719 there'll finally be two lanes, 00:11:14.719 --> 00:11:17.080 and I can get around this person. 00:11:17.200 --> 00:11:20.359 And as I finally get around and I look over, 00:11:20.359 --> 00:11:22.840 it's someone in their early 20s, 00:11:22.840 --> 00:11:25.479 clearly with a mild case of Down syndrome, 00:11:25.479 --> 00:11:27.320 whose parent is just thrilled 00:11:27.320 --> 00:11:29.320 that they're actually learning to drive. 00:11:31.559 --> 00:11:34.400 And immediately I think, what is wrong with me? 00:11:35.400 --> 00:11:37.200 What is wrong with me? 00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:38.799 Because the whole time I'm thinking, 00:11:38.799 --> 00:11:41.000 why is this person driving slow? 00:11:42.320 --> 00:11:44.599 They have a different skill set. 00:11:44.599 --> 00:11:46.599 They're at a different place. 00:11:46.599 --> 00:11:48.919 Now, what if I'd looked over, 00:11:48.919 --> 00:11:52.159 and there were no pronounced issues 00:11:52.159 --> 00:11:54.200 that I could witness or observe? 00:11:55.119 --> 00:11:57.359 Then I would have said, they're just like me, 00:11:57.359 --> 00:12:00.280 and they're just choosing to be irritating, 00:12:00.280 --> 00:12:04.039 because we can't see the smaller gradations. 00:12:04.039 --> 00:12:08.239 Or the more devastating message, 00:12:08.239 --> 00:12:11.239 they're smarter than me and not as in big of a hurry. 00:12:12.200 --> 00:12:17.200 You know, why we just can't see the differences, 00:12:17.559 --> 00:12:19.960 why we can't leave room for that, 00:12:19.960 --> 00:12:22.200 and assume, you know, that all of us 00:12:22.200 --> 00:12:23.960 will need mercy in the end. 00:12:23.960 --> 00:12:26.400 And who am I, as someone who needs mercy, 00:12:26.400 --> 00:12:30.280 to resent that someone else might get more mercy? 00:12:32.119 --> 00:12:34.239 That we might all make it to heaven, 00:12:34.239 --> 00:12:38.799 because God is generous with his gifts, 00:12:38.799 --> 00:12:42.440 rather than, oh no, no, no, I, you know, 00:12:42.440 --> 00:12:45.840 I want God to be generous enough that some of us get in, 00:12:45.840 --> 00:12:48.280 but I don't want God to be generous enough 00:12:48.280 --> 00:12:51.080 to let the people who have hurt me in life get in. 00:12:52.440 --> 00:12:55.400 That's why God says, I desire forgiveness, 00:12:55.400 --> 00:13:00.080 I desire mercy, I desire compassion, you know. 00:13:00.080 --> 00:13:01.840 And then there's a little line that always says, 00:13:01.840 --> 00:13:04.479 I desire these things more than sacrifice. 00:13:04.479 --> 00:13:06.520 You know that's a trick in scripture. 00:13:07.359 --> 00:13:09.440 Because real mercy and real forgiveness 00:13:09.440 --> 00:13:11.799 will always involve a little sacrifice. 00:13:12.880 --> 00:13:13.760 It's always there. 00:13:13.760 --> 00:13:16.599 He's telling us the kind of sacrifice 00:13:16.599 --> 00:13:18.640 that he would like us to make. 00:13:18.640 --> 00:13:20.960 And we're really good at burning incense, 00:13:20.960 --> 00:13:23.119 but, you know, letting go of our anger, 00:13:24.239 --> 00:13:27.320 letting that go up in smoke, not so much. 00:13:27.320 --> 00:13:31.280 Most of us have old hurts, 00:13:31.280 --> 00:13:33.679 and we still behave out of those hurts. 00:13:33.679 --> 00:13:35.080 We run around trying to say, 00:13:35.080 --> 00:13:36.679 I'm gonna try and be less angry. 00:13:38.159 --> 00:13:40.280 The problem is we need to be more healed. 00:13:41.159 --> 00:13:42.679 Everyone in your life that you've had 00:13:42.679 --> 00:13:44.840 a long going battle with, 00:13:44.840 --> 00:13:47.119 and you think, I can't let it go, 00:13:47.119 --> 00:13:48.640 it's because you're still hurt, 00:13:48.640 --> 00:13:50.200 not because you're still angry. 00:13:51.559 --> 00:13:53.479 Anger's just the way we distract ourselves, 00:13:53.479 --> 00:13:56.000 because, you know, when I'm angry at you, 00:13:56.000 --> 00:13:58.520 that just feels stronger than admitting I'm hurt. 00:13:59.840 --> 00:14:01.000 Admitting I'm hurt, 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:03.679 that just doesn't have quite as much bravado as anger. 00:14:05.719 --> 00:14:07.359 Actually, usually hurt. 00:14:07.359 --> 00:14:09.520 We're hurt by injustices. 00:14:09.520 --> 00:14:11.640 And instead, what we have to do is get to that point 00:14:11.640 --> 00:14:14.640 where we want everyone to succeed. 00:14:15.520 --> 00:14:19.880 I think that's such an interesting, simple concept, 00:14:19.880 --> 00:14:22.840 but when we look at all the tensions in our country, 00:14:24.080 --> 00:14:26.760 rather than trying to figure out which side is right, 00:14:26.760 --> 00:14:29.280 do we want everyone to succeed? 00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:32.960 Or do we just not, can we not go there? 00:14:32.960 --> 00:14:35.039 I'm still too hurt by the other guys. 00:14:36.080 --> 00:14:38.840 But if we ever become a group of people, 00:14:38.840 --> 00:14:40.960 a country, a church, a culture, 00:14:40.960 --> 00:14:43.239 that wants everyone to succeed, 00:14:43.239 --> 00:14:44.719 then maybe for the first time, 00:14:44.719 --> 00:14:47.280 we will understand the mercy of God, 00:14:47.280 --> 00:14:49.960 who comes not to save those 00:14:49.960 --> 00:14:51.840 who are doing just the right things, 00:14:51.840 --> 00:14:54.119 but even to save those who would crucify Him. 00:14:55.559 --> 00:14:58.320 The ones who would hurt Him to save everyone. 00:14:58.320 --> 00:15:00.520 I think when we become that culture, 00:15:00.520 --> 00:15:04.159 we start to manifest for the rest of the world 00:15:04.159 --> 00:15:07.599 what it would look like to live in the kingdom of God.

Father Pat’s message centers on the radical generosity and mercy of God expressed in the parable of the laborers in the vineyard. He challenges the deeply ingrained cultural and economic assumptions of fairness based on productivity and merit, exposing how these values often conflict with the Gospel’s call to compassion, equity, and grace. The parable disturbs a merit-based worldview by portraying a God who gives not according to effort or timing, but according to need and divine generosity. Father Pat invites the listener to confront the uncomfortable truth that we are often more emotionally aligned with retributive justice—punishment and fairness on our terms—than with the transformative mercy of Christ. He calls for a deep conversion: to move beyond superficial religious observance and toward a heart that genuinely desires the good and salvation of all, even those we judge, resent, or exclude. In his homily, Father Pat begins by acknowledging the discomfort many feel with this Gospel passage, especially in cultures like America’s that equate justice with meritocratic reward. The parable Jesus tells—of laborers hired at different times of the day but all receiving the same wage—pushes against the grain of our expectations. We instinctively believe those who work more deserve more. But Jesus reframes justice not as a matter of proportional compensation, but of sufficient provision—each laborer receives what he needs to live. This, Father Pat argues, is not just about economics; it's about our spiritual posture. He provocatively suggests that our allegiance to systems of merit and capitalism may override our allegiance to Christ. If it were proven that Jesus was a "socialist" in the sense that He prioritized need over merit, Father Pat posits that most Christians would not abandon their economic beliefs or their faith, but would ignore the contradiction—pretending it doesn't exist. This exposes a tension between our love of Jesus and our love of systems that reward competition, hierarchy, and exclusivity. He draws a stark contrast between divine mercy and what he calls our emotional affinity for the devil—understood not necessarily as a literal person, but as a symbol of retributive justice. We are conditioned by our culture and media to desire punishment for those who’ve done wrong. We find satisfaction not in forgiveness, but in seeing others "get what they deserve." Mercy, in comparison, often feels unsatisfying and unjust to us. Father Pat likens this to courtroom dramas or crime shows, where a lack of punishment leaves the viewer uneasy. In these reactions, he finds evidence of our deeper spiritual struggle: we want mercy for ourselves, but justice—on our terms—for others. He then reflects on the ways we judge others, often assuming that if someone is struggling or behaving differently, it's because they’re choosing to, rather than considering that they may simply be carrying burdens we don’t see. He tells a story about impatience in traffic, where his frustration with a slow driver dissipates upon realizing the driver has Down syndrome. The moment opens his heart to the realization that not everyone moves through life at the same pace or with the same abilities. But if no visible disability is present, we often default to judgment, assuming the other is lazy, ignorant, or malicious. This is what he calls the “moron syndrome”—an inability to see the nuance and diversity in human experiences. Father Pat urges us to recognize that we all need mercy, and that needing more mercy does not make someone less worthy of love. He challenges us to resist the temptation to place ourselves on the “right” side of the salvation line while keeping others out. He emphasizes that God’s mercy is not a zero-sum game: someone receiving more does not mean we receive less. In fact, God’s mercy is a call for us to rejoice when others are lifted up, not resent it. He also touches on the deeper nature of anger and unforgiveness in our lives. We often mask our hurt with anger because it feels more powerful and less vulnerable. But true healing begins when we admit our wounds and allow mercy to take root. Forgiveness, he notes, is not about denying justice but about letting go of the need to see others suffer as we have. True mercy always demands sacrifice—not ritual sacrifice, but the sacrifice of our pride, resentment, and need for control. Ultimately, Father Pat calls us to imagine a world where we desire everyone to succeed—not just ourselves or our group. He suggests that such a vision reflects the heart of God’s kingdom: a place where even those who hurt others, who come late, or who fall short are embraced, healed, and welcomed. If we as a Church, a nation, or individuals can become people who want universal flourishing, then we begin to mirror the radical, generous, and scandalous mercy of God. Such a transformation would not only change our theology but also how we live, love, and relate to one another. In doing so, we would become true reflections of the kingdom of heaven, where the last are first, and the first, last—not as punishment or reward, but as the unfolding of divine grace to all.
