Glory to you, O Lord. Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening said, This saying is hard. Who can accept it? Since Jesus knew that His disciples were murmuring about this, He said to them, Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before? It is the Spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life, but there are some among you who do not believe. For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father. As a result of this, many of His disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied Him. Jesus said to the twelve, Do you also want to leave? Simon Peter answered him, Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, the gospel of the Lord. So this is our sixth week of this chapter of John and I am ready to return to my former way of life. John just wraps the same thought around a dozen different ways and he kind of keeps starting the conversation over again like they haven't already been through it. It's very Greek. But I think in light of the other two readings we can get to some interesting places that aren't simply a rehash of what we've been talking about. And starting with this, the most, for me, the far most interesting reading religiously, culturally we'll get to the second one which you're all interested in. And they cleaned it up today. But the first one is theologically much more interesting. It's this Joshua says, so you know, which God do you want to serve? Now, first understand he is coming from an era when he was probably not a monotheist. He probably thought there were more than one, there was more than one God. So when he says which God are you going to worship? Now that's not a question that a real monotheist would ask. There's only one God. But he's saying which God? And then he, I mean, he goes out of there and beyond that to say, you know, do you want the gods that did this or the gods of the Amorites? Which gods? Now today we're really not very far beyond that. We don't really, when someone writes, I think someone wrote a book in the last eight years called God is One, you know, and it was this sort of we all worship the same God, which we don't. I do believe that there is a fundamental reality God that is not changed by our belief. That, you know, we all try to get to the reality and the truth but when we say there's only one God, what we're really saying is there's only one God that's beyond yours and my belief and that we will never get our heads around. But when you and I talk about God, and it's the most frightening words I ever hear and it's inevitably on a plane or something when you can't escape that someone says, so do you believe in God? And what they mean is, do you believe what I believe about God? Because if you were to say, oh yes he's the head of cabbage in California they say, you don't believe in God! You don't believe what I believe about God. Very, very different and I would wager that you won't find, you certainly won't find theologians nowadays, but you won't find most of us that believe in the God that Joshua is talking about. Joshua is talking about a God that likes his people better than other people. That was the belief. It was a very partisan God. God will defend Joshua and his people when they go to battle against those people. I would posit nowadays that any reputable theologian knows that God will fight for you until you're fighting against another person and then God doesn't like you any better than them. I know that is harsh to hear at the beginning of football season. God does not like any team better than any others. I know what you're all thinking and I'm not going to say it. No, no team. You know, there's that idea that what it means to believe in a God that Jesus starts to unveil the God who is here to save all people. The God who loves all creation. The God who is infinite love, whose mercy is beyond our comprehension. That's the God that really Joshua's not going to get too terribly near. So when we hear this what God do you serve? Actually most of us nowadays would have to disagree with Joshua because he has a very different image of God than we are left with nowadays. He talks very clearly about the ideas of God that I think we would still hold to, though if you read the whole book of Joshua, he shuts a lot of these down later on. This is the God who brings you out of slavery and into freedom. This is the God. But unfortunately as you get down, you realize this is the God who brings Joshua and his people out of freedom. Not necessarily others. You've got St. Paul still writing about slavery, you know, centuries later. And he's only talking about how well you should treat slaves, which is similar to what he talks about today. I knew, I knew I'm going to bust the chops, I don't even know who it was, but I'm going to bust the chops a little of whoever prepared the lectures this week. Because I knew without asking every once in a while I say, hey, when you have a discussion on those second readings, if they're real long, do the short reading. No, no, no, they love the long readings. Every week we get the longest reading they can find. But I knew this week they would not do the long reading. Because the long reading starts out with wives should be subordinate to their husbands. As to the Lord himself. And I knew they would go, oh, let's do the short version. Huge mistake. The reason that's a huge mistake is because the reason we do it is the second reading says all the same stuff a little more palatably. I'd rather have it unpalatable. I'd rather it didn't slip in, you know, with the spoonful of sugar sort of thing. You know, because when you really read this, husbands, you should love your wives so that you can present them unblemished to God, because your love will make them holy. This is sort of the difference between the first one says, you know, women should have no freedom. And the second one is, and this happened to me within the last, well, since I've been here at MPB, the last 14, 15 years, that in this day and age, a woman said to me, my husband gives me all the freedom I want. And I went, gives you? Gives you the freedom? You got no freedom at all. If he's giving you your freedom, it sounds a little more palatable, but it, you know, Paul could not have imagined a world, he really couldn't imagine what gender equality looked like, so he's trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear here. He's trying to do what he can to say, oh, you know, this authority that men have over women should never be abused. Rather than, maybe he couldn't conceive of gender equality. And no one wants to be honest about it, but we haven't conceived it yet. We really haven't. We're still trying to, and the same could be said with many kinds of prejudice. We're, real equality and real justice scares us, so instead we want to be, we want to feel decent about our interpersonal relationships, so we don't want to treat anyone badly through inequality, but we're not really willing to go to equality, and there's a difference. You know, the difference between, well, we should be charitable to certain groups, rather than, they should have just as much power as we do. Shouldn't depend on one group's charity towards another. That we really would strive for that, and so our vision of God, when someone says, who's the God you serve? Is it the God of equality? Is it the God of justice? Is it the God that, well, I'm pretty comfortable being above the median in a lot of ways, and I'm not sure, justice might, you know, scare me a little too much. You can always see there are those who will pass laws that keep the divide bigger, and they'll do it in the name of order and hierarchy and that, and then those who will try to go for that God of justice. I think it's fascinating that I've never really met anyone arrogant enough to say that they know more than God. You know, I think we know next to God, we're kind of dumb. God is omniscient, all-knowing, but we're really comfortable with a vision of God whose heart is smaller than ours. Not as mine, but God's heart is smaller. That's why I'm really hoping that Aunt Sally gets into heaven, I'm just not sure God will let her in. I know that those are good people, but it says in Scripture they're going to hell. What can I do? God's heart is just not as big as mine. Interesting how easily we could say such a thing. And there are things in Scripture, we know that you have to have a filter. We know that thou shalt not commit murder, and thou shalt not eat shrimp, should not be on an even playing field. But there is no bold font on murder. There's no underlines. They didn't even understand italics yet. So we just get this list. And someone comes along and says, oh, let's be reasonable, of course murder is worse than shrimp. While we're at it, though, let's keep the slavery thing, that one's fine, but the women, let's not let them get out of hand, you know. And that all gets slipped in, and someone says, so who's the God you worship? How wide is your God? How large? How universally loving? How nonpartisan is your God? And, you know, it's so funny that if you're going to be partisan, trust me, you will not stop chopping the group up. You know, we've watched and we've said, oh, you know, America is not greater than every other country, and now it's America can't get along with itself. And now it's the Democrats and the Republicans can't get along within their own groups. Thanksgiving dinner, you know, you can't even talk to the family now. You want to go partisan, you will get it down to you against the world. Because we just, you know, it's not that I don't like other people, it's just that no one seems to get it as much as I do. I get it. And you all, what's going on? We all have a bit of that. A friend of mine and I were talking this week about Catholic church and this idea that the Pope is infallible, and he said, how could anyone believe in infallibility? And I said, everyone believes in infallibility. They just usually put it within themselves. Everyone's got someone or something that's infallible. You know? If a doctor tells you something and a grocer tells you something else, if it's medical, you probably go with the doctor. We've all got people we think are infallible in certain areas. And it sets us up for huge disappointment, but more importantly, it closes us off from the possibility that God is everywhere, that God is universal, that God loves everyone equally. And even though this is so horrifying, because so many of us have heard it for years, you know what? In God's eyes, I'm not special. Any more than anyone else. And, you know, I love language, so when someone says, well, you're special the same way that everyone else is special, I go, I don't think that word means what you think it means. You know? And that's okay. Because I think they're using special to mean valuable. And everyone's valuable. There was a funeral yesterday, and I described her, but I did it on purpose, I described her as having an uncommon amount of common sense. Because we know that, you know, common sense is not necessarily common. We mean something else by it. You know? And we use the word, though, to mean a certain thing. And I think when people say, well, you are special in the sight of God, well, you know, in my family, there were times I was special and it was not a good thing. I was especially irksome. I was especially in trouble. I had a favorite aunt, and I always have to bring her up on this weekend because that was her favorite reading in all of Scripture. She's screaming in heaven right now. Aunt Mary was a character. And I just used to love her. I think our priest did it on purpose. He always found the happiest reader in the world to do that reading. And she'd always get up and she'd say, Wives, be submissive to your husbands. And she was just so happy. And my aunt did everything but she used to smoke a cigar. I knew she was going to smoke one in church one of these days. You would just see her shake. But she had this way of leaning into a punch that I always appreciated. My mother would always say kind of what I call the bumper stickers of Christianity. My mother loved to throw something out that was going to sound deep. And Aunt Mary used to love to just go as far into it as she could until it looked ridiculous. But my mother would say one time, she said, When I die, I don't want anyone to cry. I want there to be a celebration of life. I really want people to feel good about it. And Aunt Mary said, I want them weeping inconsolably at my funeral. laughter And she went on in great detail to describe the grief and pain that we should hold. Well, my mother's lovely thought was now gone and she was furious. But, you know, she was that sort of you know, we all have these little ideas and every once in a while someone comes through and breaks through them. And says, you know, what if everyone's equal? What if, you know, my funeral will not be more special than yours? Someone asked me this week about the paw on a casket. You know, why don't we put this, well, why did we do a paw on the casket? The original idea of a paw on a casket was in the Middle Ages when some people had more wealth than anyone and their casket was gold with leafing and da-da-da and then a poor person came in in a pine box. The original intent of a paw is to drape your coffin to say, no one's special at this moment. You can have the prettiest coffin in the world but for the funeral, there's going to be a simple white cloth over it because at this moment, we are connected. This is not a moment of, look how special. A God who loves everyone. A God who is hurt when anyone suffers. A God who can't bear to watch us pass one another with indifference when people are struggling. And starting 00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:44.000 with this, the most, for me, the 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:46.000 far most interesting reading 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:48.000 religiously, culturally 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:50.000 we'll get to the second one which you're all interested 00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:52.000 in. And they 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:54.000 cleaned it up today. 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:56.000 But the first one is theologically much 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:58.000 more interesting. It's this 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:00.000 Joshua says, so 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:02.000 you know, which God do you want to serve? 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:04.000 Now, first understand 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:06.000 he is coming from an era when he was 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:08.000 probably not a monotheist. 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:10.000 He probably thought there were more 00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:12.000 than one, there was more than one God. So when he says 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:14.000 which God are you going to 00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:16.000 worship? Now that's 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:18.000 not a question that a real 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:20.000 monotheist would ask. 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:22.000 There's only one God. 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:24.000 But he's saying which God? 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:26.000 And then he, I mean, he goes out of 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:28.000 there and beyond that to say, you 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:30.000 know, do you want the gods that did this 00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:32.000 or the gods of the Amorites? Which 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:34.000 gods? Now 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:36.000 today we're really not very far 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:38.000 beyond that. We don't 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:40.000 really, when someone writes, I think someone wrote 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:42.000 a book in the last eight years called 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:44.000 God is One, you know, and it was this sort of 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:46.000 we all worship the same God, which we don't. 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:48.000 I do 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:50.000 believe that there is a fundamental 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:52.000 reality God 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:54.000 that is not changed by our belief. 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:56.000 That, you know, 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:58.000 we all try to get to 00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:00.000 the reality and the truth 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:02.000 but when we say there's only 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:04.000 one God, what we're really saying is there's only 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:06.000 one God that's beyond yours and my 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:08.000 belief and that we will never get our 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:10.000 heads around. But when you and I talk 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:12.000 about God, and 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:14.000 it's the most frightening words I ever hear 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:16.000 and it's inevitably on a 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:18.000 plane or something when you can't escape 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:20.000 that someone says, so do you believe 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:22.000 in God? 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:24.000 And what they mean is, do you believe what I 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:26.000 believe about God? 00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:28.000 Because if you were to say, oh yes 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:30.000 he's the head of cabbage in California 00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:32.000 they say, 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:34.000 you don't believe in God! 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:36.000 You don't believe 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:38.000 what I believe about God. 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.000 Very, very different 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:42.000 and I would wager that 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:44.000 you won't find, you certainly won't find theologians 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:46.000 nowadays, but you won't find 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:48.000 most of us that believe in the God that Joshua 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:50.000 is talking about. 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:52.000 Joshua is talking about a God 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:54.000 that likes his people better 00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:56.000 than other people. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:58.000 That was the belief. It was a very 00:03:58.000 --> 00:04:00.000 partisan God. 00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:02.000 God will defend 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:04.000 Joshua and his people 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:06.000 when they go to battle against those 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:08.000 people. I would 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:10.000 posit nowadays that any reputable 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:12.000 theologian knows that God 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:14.000 will fight for you until 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:16.000 you're fighting against another person 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:18.000 and then God doesn't like you any better than them. 00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:20.000 I know that is 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:22.000 harsh to hear at the beginning 00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:24.000 of football season. 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:26.000 God 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:28.000 does not like any team better than any others. 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:30.000 I know what you're all thinking and I'm not 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:32.000 going to say it. No, no team. 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.000 You know, there's that 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:36.000 idea that what it means to 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:38.000 believe in a God 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:40.000 that Jesus starts to unveil 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:42.000 the God who is here to 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:44.000 save all people. The God 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:46.000 who loves all creation. 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:48.000 The God who is infinite 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:50.000 love, whose mercy is beyond our 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:52.000 comprehension. That's the 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:54.000 God that really Joshua's 00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:56.000 not going to get too terribly near. 00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:58.000 So when we hear this 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:00.000 what God do you serve? 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:02.000 Actually most of us nowadays would have to 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:04.000 disagree with Joshua because he 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:06.000 has a very different image of God than we are 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:08.000 left with nowadays. 00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:10.000 He talks 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:12.000 very clearly about 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:14.000 the ideas of God that I think 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:16.000 we would still hold to, though if you read the 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:18.000 whole book of Joshua, he shuts 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:20.000 a lot of these down later on. 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:22.000 This is the God 00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:24.000 who brings you out of slavery and 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:26.000 into freedom. 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:28.000 This is the God. 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:30.000 But unfortunately 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:32.000 as you get down, you realize 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:34.000 this is the God who brings Joshua 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:36.000 and his people out of freedom. 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:38.000 Not necessarily others. 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:40.000 You've got St. Paul still writing about 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:42.000 slavery, you know, 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:44.000 centuries later. 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:46.000 And he's only talking about how well 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:48.000 you should treat slaves, which is 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:50.000 similar to what he talks about today. 00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:52.000 I knew, 00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:54.000 I knew I'm going to bust the chops, I don't 00:05:54.000 --> 00:05:56.000 even know who it was, but I'm going to bust the 00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:58.000 chops a little of whoever prepared the lectures 00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:00.000 this week. I'd rather 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:52.000 have it unpalatable. 00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:54.000 I'd rather it didn't 00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:56.000 slip in, you know, with the spoonful of 00:06:56.000 --> 00:06:58.000 sugar sort of thing. 00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:00.000 You know, because when you really read this, 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:02.000 husbands, you should love your wives 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:04.000 so that you can present them unblemished 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:06.000 to God, because your love will 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:08.000 make them holy. 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:10.000 This is sort of the difference 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:12.000 between the first one says, 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.000 you know, women should have no freedom. 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:16.000 And the second one is, and this happened to me 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:18.000 within the last, well, since I've been here at 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:20.000 MPB, the last 14, 15 years, 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:22.000 that in this day and age, a woman 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:24.000 said to me, my husband gives me all the freedom I want. 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:26.000 And I went, gives you? 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:28.000 Gives you the 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:30.000 freedom? You got no freedom at all. 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:32.000 If he's giving you 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:34.000 your freedom, it sounds 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:36.000 a little more palatable, but it, 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:38.000 you know, Paul could not have imagined 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:40.000 a world, 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:42.000 he really couldn't imagine what 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:44.000 gender equality looked like, so he's trying to make 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:46.000 a silk purse out of a sow's ear here. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:48.000 He's trying to do what he can 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:50.000 to say, oh, you know, 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:52.000 this authority that men have 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:54.000 over women should never be abused. 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:56.000 Rather than, maybe 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:58.000 he couldn't conceive 00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:00.000 of gender equality. 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:02.000 And no one wants to be honest 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:04.000 about it, but we haven't conceived it yet. 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:06.000 We really 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:08.000 haven't.
