On leaving the synagogue, Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her, and she waited on them. When it was evening after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him, and on finding him said, everyone is looking for you. He said, let us go to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose, I have come. So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons through the whole of Galilee. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. We are presented with three very, very different visions of response to life and to fortune. The first one we get, and you know, the first two actually, Job and Paul, they kind of remind me of Tigger and Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. You know, that first reading is just, you hate to refer to scripture as whiny, but you know, when Rita read it, and Rita is one of the most upbeat people I know, but even Rita reading it was a little depressing. It's not life of drudgery, and we're just a slave, and at night, and I'll never, ever, ever know happiness again, it is so Eeyore. You know, poor, poor Job. And you know, we get this in scripture, the entire book of Lamentations is, you know, it's ascribed to Job, but Job is a fictional character. So this is, it's like all the depressed people of Israel got together and decided to write a book. But it is important that that is in scripture, because otherwise, religion becomes the purview of happy people. And I've seen, and this is very popular in some of the sort of grassroots level churches in America where, you know, everyone's supposed to show up at a funeral going, but it's a blessing from God, and they're in heaven, and we're happy, and you're like, no. No, sometimes it's okay to bring that pain and sorrow into our faith, and it doesn't mean we're, you know, you're less Christian because you don't see joy in every moment. You know, and I have to tell you not to, you know, throw any of you under the bus, but I always like to notice when I come in, just because it's maybe a little projection, but when I come into the early morning mass, and I watch, usually it's during the first reading, and literally everyone's going. I'm like, this is a very unhappy group of people. And you know that, I know that by noon you'll all be fine, but it, you know, it's just, it's 7.30 in the morning, and most people just aren't real animated at that hour, you know, so there's this sense that scripture needs to bring all of us into our faith. There are four psalms called the cursing psalms that scripture scholars have written tons about that in the, in what is called the breviary, which is the cycle of prayers that the priest is supposed to say every day. So there's a set of psalms, three psalms, and in the cycle they took out the cursing psalms out of that little lectionary because they're just, you know, it's too awful a vision of God. They serve a great purpose in scripture. They let you know that the people in that day and age, they even brought their anger. Even anger at God is a belief in God. You can't be angry with a God you don't believe in. So even when someone says they are angry with God, it's an amazing expression of faith. You don't find people who have a great faith in a moment of crisis saying, huh, no longer believe in God. They may come to that crisis, but usually first they have to get to this anger at God. And when those cursing psalms, when people knew them, and you know, we know little lines out of them, you know, God will dash their children against a stone. That's not usually the God we're hoping to spend eternity with, you know. But that image of God is there because that's important, that we don't think that we can come to God only when we're emotionally in the right place. You know, if I'm going to pray, first I have to sort of calm and become a guru. And once I'm a guru, I can approach God in prayer. No, the prayer is what helps us get there. So we have to be able to bring ourselves, Job today, this character, Job in absolute, it's not even depression, Job is in a whiny space. Paul is in the tigger space. You know, Paul is, it's sort of like that grassroots level. Paul, every once in a while, and you don't know if we're getting the authentic, you know, he's writing a letter, and he basically, and from prison there's a lot of this, you know, I'm in prison and everything, you know, I'm in chains and I'm in the dark and they're going to kill me, but I'm in, I have all this joy for what's going on. And you kind of want to go, really, Paul? Really? You know, there are those people that we know that when real tragedy happens, you know, I almost think that, you know, it's the spiritual end of denial. There's a difference between trusting God that things are going to be okay even though they're tough right now. There's a difference between that and the sort of, oh, even when God gives me sufferings, I love it. And, you know, that leaves the area of spirituality and gets into some sort of fetish that I don't want to know about. Suffering is suffering. And God can be with us in it, but it's still suffering, and we need to feel the suffering. Some days we need to feel that sort of loneliness, whatever it is that Job is going through, whatever it is then that Paul is going through. Now, what we get that's interesting in the gospel, and we get it twice. We get it with Simon, Peter's mother-in-law, and we get it again with Jesus. And that is these people whose emotional reaction we're not told much about. We're told their physical reaction. Now, the mother-in-law in this to me is possibly the saddest character in all of Scripture. She's sick with a fever, and Jesus, Jesus himself walks in and says, basically says, you're healed. What's for dinner? I mean, this is every mother's nightmare. But, and of course, they don't say that anyone asked her. It just says, you know, the fever left, and she waited on them. And a few seconds later, we always see that, it always, you know, there's an edge to that for us. But we don't see that there's a very similar minute with Jesus in a few minutes. Jesus has got now the crowds pressing in on him. Everyone wants something. They've all seen the healing. They're all after him, and they, you know, everyone wants two minutes. And he gets away, and he prays. This is the moment that he is healed. He gets away, and he has a moment alone, and they come, and they say, everyone's looking for you. He goes, yeah, let's go, boom. He gets up, and he starts waiting on others again. It's this moment that says, you know, helping other people is exhausting, but the grace of this character of the mother-in-law is how many of us, when we're struck with some horrible health crisis, you know, this year, the flu, all these things, or even more serious life-threatening illnesses, how many of us, now, I don't mean the bargaining. We'll do all sorts of bargaining with God when we're sick. If you just get me well, I'll do this, I'll do, but how many of us truly want to be cured so that we can get back to helping others? How many of us think, oh, I've gotta get through this because, you know, people get there. People do this all the time. You know, even if it's not, even if it's not a warm, fuzzy feeling, I can't tell you the number of parents I've seen that face illness, and their first reaction is what will happen to my children? Meaning, I just want to be healthy so that I can get back to taking care of my children. That's that sort of gut-level reaction you see out of the mother-in-law and out of Jesus today, and what makes Jesus' kind of particular is he's so focused on the mission, and it's kind of the mission that I think modern religion has forgotten about. You know, Jesus is running around healing, helping. He's running around healing, helping, and preaching good news, and he goes into a town, and like, how much could he have preached? He couldn't have given them the code of canon law. You know, he goes in, he heals some people, he preaches the good news to them, and then goes to the next town. I've no doubt that nowadays the hierarchy would tell him that that is an incomplete catechesis, and absolutely no one is truly ready for the sacrament. When did our faith become, you know, this has got to, you have got to get to CCD every week, and you've got to do this, and we've got to train, and we're not teaching enough on this topic, when it sort of expanded from this, it says in Mark's gospel, the earliest gospel, most scripture scholars would say, you know, let's go to the nearby villages that I can preach there also. This is the purpose I've come for. So what it's telling us is the purpose that Jesus comes for, now we would say later he came for the cross, but at this moment in his life, his purpose as an itinerant preacher is clearly to go to a town, preach this message that, you know, God is with you in salvation, and God is going to lift up the poor, and all of these basic messages of the kingdom of God, he's gonna preach them, and a day later he's gonna be gone. What would it look like today if we could boil our faith down to something that could be taught in an afternoon? Now, that doesn't mean you wouldn't spend the rest of your life trying to ruminate on it and figure out what it meant, but my guess is if you told any member of the clergy, deacon, priest, bishop, pope, that, you know, you get two hours to tell them about Catholicism, and that's all they're gonna have for their life. It would just be fascinating to see, you know, where some people would go with that. What we'd always get probably is a little bit of gospel and a lot of agenda, you know, because they only get a moment. Jesus really didn't set up a system that said, let's come in and I am going to walk you through until you are all formed exactly the way I think you should be. It was this, I'm gonna leave you in the hands of your community. What the essence of his message was, and we don't even think about it because it's no longer radical. The radical message he had was this message that all of these rules aren't gonna get you into heaven. God is. God's gonna get you into heaven or God's not. It's not something you're capable of. You can be, I hope you will respond to this by going out and being the best person you can and helping others and knowing that God is there to help you so you should be there to help others and living this life of service, and then he moves on. And that is that original, in the Greek, the kerygma, the original proclamation of Jesus. It's quickly changed into the early proclamation of church, but the proclamation of Jesus is all this kingdom of God. What is the kingdom of God? And all of this, the lowly will be lifted up and those who are up on the top will be brought back down and it's this move towards true equality and where Job finds himself whining and where Paul finds himself with almost a false bravado, it's this character of the mother-in-law in Jesus that take the gifts they're given, take the hits they're given, and then get up and continue with their life and who they are. Get out there and do the work. You know, the interesting thing is in this, especially today, it kind of has this sort of sexist edge to it because it says, you know, she gets up and waits on them. And we don't know. Most of us assume, you know, we can just put a mom duty on her at that point. You know, she's cooking or doing, you know. But the truth is she gets up and had it said that about anyone else in scripture, that they served Jesus, we wouldn't go there. That's something, you know, if they said, yes, Peter was serving Jesus, they wouldn't go. You mean he made dinner? So some of that is our own projection. She gets up and it says, and she begins to serve them. When you're talking about Jesus and the followers, serving them could have meant she got up and went out and helped the poor. She served them. Most of us want healing. Most of us already have some amount of help. We all have some amount of gifts. Do we use them to serve the gospel? Because the day we do, that's when we understand the mindset of Simon's mother-in-law. More importantly, we start to understand the mindset of Jesus. Could have set himself up with a really nice following if he didn't just keep going to the next town. But that's what he came for.
