Glory to you, O Lord. The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. And they said, is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, I have come down from heaven? Jesus answered and said to them, stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the father who sent me draw him. And I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets, they shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the father except the one who is from God. He has seen the father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. And the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. The Gospel of the Lord. Amen. This gospel is typically what we call Johannine, meaning from the corpus that belongs to John, Johannine. It's very wordy. It doesn't quite, to the modern mind, seem to stay on topic. It's a little ADD for the gospel. You can see, and the reason his whole gospel reads this way is because this is the one gospel written for a Greek community. And so he's really translating, even though it's all the same language, he's translating these Semitic, almost tribal ideas and stories and theology into something that would make sense for a lot of people who do Greek philosophy. The other three gospels just don't reach this audience. And so, as I've said many times before, it's the only gospel where Jesus seems to sound like a philosopher. All of his sentences go on for days. You know, it's very convoluted. One answer might go on for an entire chapter. Very different from the pithy rabbi of the other three gospels. And that's because it's being translated, and it's not a dishonest thing, because there's a full expectation that the audience understands the genre. You know, you fast forward 2,000 years, and we read everything like it was a newspaper. And if it doesn't have nothing but the facts, ma'am, we think that, well, there's either something wrong with it or it was misleading or, no, it was just simply not written for our culture. And so, you get this first thing where they, it says, the Jews are murmuring about Jesus, and right there you see the bias of this particular gospel. And many of you, if you come here often, you've heard this little diatribe, but, you know, get used to it, you'll hear it again, and that is, when they're listening to Jesus, they are the multitude, they are the crowd, they are the disciples, they are the followers. When they're murmuring or turning against him, they're the Jews, all the way through John's gospel. That is an unconscious bias, because this gospel's being written at a time when early Judaism and early Christianity are starting to really experience a hostile split from one another. And so, you know, in our Pentecost reading, we always have, you know, the disciples are gathered in a room for fear of the Jews, and I always wanna say, who do you think the disciples were? And has it occurred to you that the story moves forward because at least one Jew magically got through the door? That would be Jesus. You know, so this selective use of language, thousands of years later, does unfortunately continue to perpetuate an unconscious bias. But what they're talking about here, you know, how can he come from God? I'm the bread come down from heaven, we know his family, and his answer to them is, well, no one can come to God unless they come to the one from whom God was sent. That's not the question they asked. He's trying to answer a Greek philosophical dualism question of how can God come out of the physical world? Because they had this dualistic sort of sense that God was too pure to be touched by the physical world, and he's trying to explain the Semitic Messiah story to a Greek crowd that has a whole different philosophical system, and it ain't working for him. So there's, so you've got that going on, but what survives from the other three Gospels that gets put into this story is that sense of if we know him, if he comes from our community, if we know his parents, if he's one of us, he couldn't possibly come from God. What is most common can't possibly rise above everything else and kind of be extraordinary. It's our willingness to pigeonhole people into the places we think they should be. And so, I mean, most of us have, if we look out even a little bit, maybe not an immediate sibling, maybe, maybe it's a cousin, but you know, I think most families have that person that just never seems to get their life together. That one that we just always worry about. And we've got him pigeonholed, and it might be a great comedy one day if we realize that they're the only person that has the right insight. And that they're the one that has the insight that might bring us to God. And slowly, God would use a dynamic like that to drive us all crazy. Because we have everyone put in their little boxes. We see this in education all the time, and there's such a fight against pigeonholing kids because of maybe the way they were in third grade, and we're afraid that the teachers won't let go of that, which I now see from the other side and realize that is so ridiculous. It's like the confessional. People come to me and they say later, oh, you know, I'm just always worried that he's gonna think bad of me after he hears. I don't want them to know that after about a week, I don't think I can remember a single confession. And even the ones I can remember, I can't remember whose they were. Why? Because I'm hearing them all the time. Now, someone comes in and they're pretty sure this confession's going to stick in his mind the rest of his life. Okay, you really are that important. Um, it just, you know, so we forget that. Probably the same with a teacher. When someone thinks it's been five years and they've just been thinking and waiting to get to my child. They're out after him. And I'm like, oh, paranoia there. Little overgrown ego. And this is what, you know, kids get, we're worried they'll get pigeonholed. We're worried even more, this was my experience, is they would get pigeonholed because of their siblings. You know, if you're following, and nothing's worse than following a bunch of gifted siblings, and you're expected to perform at the same level as the gifted siblings. Now, mine was the opposite problem, but I've read about that problem. You know, my mother loves to tell the story that our middle school, I'm sorry, our junior high, for those of you that don't know, when I was in school, it was back at a time even live theater was still in black and white. I mean, it was a while ago. But in junior high, the principal told my mother one time, I was like maybe in ninth grade, seven, eight, nine was junior high in the Springs, and she said, the principal said to her, Dom Malika said, Pat Dolan, is he one of yours? Now remember, I was number six of the boys, and they were all boys. My sister was the youngest, but I was the youngest of the boys. Is he one of yours? And my mom immediately said, what did he do? Oh, nothing, I've never met him, he's never been in my office, so I just kind of assumed he wasn't one of yours. So I had the opposite sort of issue, if teachers knew, but we worry about pigeonholing kids, pigeonholing people. Society tends to socioeconomically pigeonhole people. It's the basis of so much prejudice, and it happens both ways. We either decide that those people over there are problematic, or at a deep level, we really don't believe that the people that I'm surrounded with that I know every day can become something better. I mean, most of us have had one friend or someone in our life, and whether it's smoking or drinking or language or anything, this time I'm really gonna quit. And a little part of our head doesn't wanna believe them, doesn't wanna believe that they might rise above the expectations, because they've disappointed us before. No one necessarily wants to believe that, and we don't know, we don't get any of the stories of Jesus's growing up. No one wants to hear that the neighborhood kid who ran through their garden and ruined their plants when he was 12 is going to save them. I mean, you can just imagine, but I think that this story gets put in the middle of this long chapter on the bread of life, because for us, later in the church, not that, but for us, we keep revisiting it because it is the sense of Eucharist. Bread and wine, what could be more common? What could be more ordinary than bread and wine? To take the most common, ordinary elements of a culture and say, we're going to watch, we're going to, with our hearts, we're going to believe in a transformation of the most common becoming the most extraordinary. We're going to, you know, I always think that the first step to belief in the Eucharist is that we have to stop pigeonholing bread and wine. We have to stop the belief that I know what something is, and once I know it and I understand it, my understanding it is more important to me than allowing it to transform. Because, you know, the world transforms, and people who don't like change, it's because change makes them feel out of control. I barely understand the way things are. I was having a conversation with a parishioner the other day a few weeks back, and we were talking about trying to keep up on everything that goes on, and she mentioned that there was someone in her family or someone that she knew, and she said, they were talking about transgender, and I knew what that meant, and I said, oh, well, you know, now they talk about non-binary. And she looked at me and she said, look, I have nothing against anyone, but I am too old to learn more words. But that may be the best, most honest answer I've ever heard. My real problem with change, I can disguise it as moral and spiritual. I'm just, I don't want to learn anything more. My gosh. And if we could get it back to the way I was when I was a child, the reason I want the world back the way it was when I was a child is because, you know, at 57 years old, I can finally understand the world when I was six. So easy. And I've had years to deal with that. So the first thing we see in this gospel is the reason they can't believe in Jesus is because he's one of us. And for all the times that we are so put off by those people over there, we start to realize that dynamic sinks in, and we're eventually not much happier with these people over here. You know, it's very hard, this is always the problem with real bigotry and prejudice is we cannot be more than one person. And let me tell you, when someone is hatefully, hatefully prejudiced about another group, they're eventually hateful about their family as well. I don't believe that anyone really spends time in the world angry and hating people, but brings a loving person home to the family every day. It doesn't happen. No one goes out into traffic screaming and yelling at every other single person in traffic and arrives home a calm and wonderful spouse. And so, you know, everything we're doing in the world is transforming the person who will go home to our lucky family tonight. And so I always think when people get married, I always think that love and honor one another, you know, we think how do you honor someone? Well, you know, every five years or so, you throw them a dinner. That in our culture is how we honor people. We honor artists, we honor, we throw them a dinner. But honoring a spouse is like understanding that every moment of my life, I'm building the person that they get to live with. Every time I let myself just loop into more anger and more anger and it becomes my way of life, that's who they live with. Every time I hold back and hold back until I really can't share too much of who I am, that's who they live with. And in a larger sense, we do that in society. We're building the person the people around us get to live with. And I think we have this sense that what comes from our most common experience of life is not the extraordinary. The grace of God, I said this last week, the grace of God is the most common thing in the world and the most extraordinary. That's the paradox of our faith, is to truly believe that what is most common is incredibly extraordinary. We're about to do baptisms and I don't want to get into trouble with the parents, but I look at the number of children in this parish. Having two babies, most common thing in the world, doesn't make them less extraordinary. But you don't, neither, every parent thinks that their child is the most amazing, most special, but I've never heard one say, I don't think anyone's ever had a baby. You know, and if you do, check with your doctor, something's gone wrong. You know, I mean, they know. As a matter of fact, when someone says, I want to be a father, I want to be a mother, they're not trying to be something that's never happened before. They want to join a group of people. What's most common in our midst is often the most extraordinary. And if we really can't believe that, I don't know that we can ever get to a real faith in the Eucharist.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 1.0, "text": " The Lord be with you.", WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.000 The Lord be with you. 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:02.799 And with your spirit. 00:00:02.799 --> 00:00:05.000 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:09.039 Glory to you, O Lord. 00:00:09.039 --> 00:00:10.880 The Jews murmured about Jesus because he 00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:13.640 said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. 00:00:13.640 --> 00:00:17.559 And they said, is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? 00:00:17.559 --> 00:00:20.079 Do we not know his father and mother? 00:00:20.079 --> 00:00:23.719 Then how can he say, I have come down from heaven? 00:00:23.719 --> 00:00:27.319 Jesus answered and said to them, stop murmuring among yourselves. 00:00:27.319 --> 00:00:31.959 No one can come to me unless the father who sent me draw him. 00:00:31.959 --> 00:00:35.319 And I will raise him on the last day. 00:00:35.319 --> 00:00:40.080 It is written in the prophets, they shall all be taught by God. 00:00:40.080 --> 00:00:43.319 Everyone who listens to my father and learns from him 00:00:43.319 --> 00:00:44.720 comes to me. 00:00:44.720 --> 00:00:47.319 Not that anyone has seen the father except the one 00:00:47.319 --> 00:00:48.479 who is from God. 00:00:48.479 --> 00:00:51.040 He has seen the father. 00:00:51.040 --> 00:00:53.520 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever 00:00:53.520 --> 00:00:55.520 believes has eternal life. 00:00:55.520 --> 00:00:56.520 I am the bread of life. 00:00:56.520 --> 00:01:00.599 Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died. 00:01:00.599 --> 00:01:03.599 This is the bread that comes down from heaven 00:01:03.599 --> 00:01:06.360 so that one may eat it and not die. 00:01:06.360 --> 00:01:08.519 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. 00:01:08.519 --> 00:01:11.000 Whoever eats this bread will live forever. 00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:13.319 And the bread that I will give is my flesh 00:01:13.319 --> 00:01:16.360 for the life of the world. 00:01:16.360 --> 00:01:17.440 The Gospel of the Lord. 00:01:26.519 --> 00:01:27.000 Amen. 00:01:31.319 --> 00:01:35.559 This gospel is typically what we call Johannine, 00:01:35.559 --> 00:01:41.720 meaning from the corpus that belongs to John, Johannine. 00:01:41.720 --> 00:01:45.239 It's very wordy. 00:01:45.239 --> 00:01:49.400 It doesn't quite, to the modern mind, seem to stay on topic. 00:01:49.400 --> 00:01:52.959 It's a little ADD for the gospel. 00:01:53.919 --> 00:01:58.199 You can see, and the reason his whole gospel reads this way 00:01:58.199 --> 00:02:01.680 is because this is the one gospel written 00:02:01.680 --> 00:02:05.120 for a Greek community. 00:02:05.120 --> 00:02:07.680 And so he's really translating, even though it's 00:02:07.680 --> 00:02:10.720 all the same language, he's translating 00:02:10.720 --> 00:02:16.720 these Semitic, almost tribal ideas and stories and theology 00:02:16.720 --> 00:02:19.080 into something that would make sense for a lot of people 00:02:19.080 --> 00:02:21.559 who do Greek philosophy. 00:02:21.639 --> 00:02:26.000 The other three gospels just don't reach this audience. 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:29.080 And so, as I've said many times before, 00:02:29.080 --> 00:02:31.559 it's the only gospel where Jesus seems 00:02:31.559 --> 00:02:33.960 to sound like a philosopher. 00:02:33.960 --> 00:02:37.679 All of his sentences go on for days. 00:02:37.679 --> 00:02:40.279 You know, it's very convoluted. 00:02:40.279 --> 00:02:43.440 One answer might go on for an entire chapter. 00:02:43.440 --> 00:02:45.880 Very different from the pithy rabbi 00:02:45.880 --> 00:02:47.839 of the other three gospels. 00:02:47.839 --> 00:02:49.880 And that's because it's being translated, 00:02:49.880 --> 00:02:53.839 and it's not a dishonest thing, 00:02:53.839 --> 00:02:56.360 because there's a full expectation 00:02:56.360 --> 00:02:59.679 that the audience understands the genre. 00:02:59.679 --> 00:03:01.639 You know, you fast forward 2,000 years, 00:03:01.639 --> 00:03:04.759 and we read everything like it was a newspaper. 00:03:04.759 --> 00:03:07.839 And if it doesn't have nothing but the facts, ma'am, 00:03:07.839 --> 00:03:10.520 we think that, well, there's either something wrong with it 00:03:10.520 --> 00:03:12.839 or it was misleading or, no, it was just simply 00:03:12.839 --> 00:03:14.960 not written for our culture. 00:03:14.960 --> 00:03:18.000 And so, you get this first thing where they, 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:21.800 it says, the Jews are murmuring about Jesus, 00:03:21.800 --> 00:03:24.600 and right there you see the bias 00:03:24.600 --> 00:03:26.199 of this particular gospel. 00:03:29.440 --> 00:03:31.000 And many of you, if you come here often, 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:32.919 you've heard this little diatribe, 00:03:32.919 --> 00:03:34.559 but, you know, get used to it, you'll hear it again, 00:03:34.559 --> 00:03:38.559 and that is, when they're listening to Jesus, 00:03:38.559 --> 00:03:41.919 they are the multitude, they are the crowd, 00:03:41.919 --> 00:03:44.839 they are the disciples, they are the followers. 00:03:44.839 --> 00:03:46.679 When they're murmuring or turning against him, 00:03:46.679 --> 00:03:50.720 they're the Jews, all the way through John's gospel. 00:03:51.839 --> 00:03:54.759 That is an unconscious bias, 00:03:54.759 --> 00:03:57.720 because this gospel's being written at a time 00:03:57.720 --> 00:03:59.800 when early Judaism and early Christianity 00:03:59.800 --> 00:04:02.360 are starting to really experience 00:04:02.360 --> 00:04:04.919 a hostile split from one another. 00:04:04.919 --> 00:04:08.679 And so, you know, in our Pentecost reading, 00:04:08.679 --> 00:04:13.279 we always have, you know, the disciples are gathered 00:04:13.279 --> 00:04:15.160 in a room for fear of the Jews, 00:04:15.160 --> 00:04:16.000 and I always wanna say, 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:17.760 who do you think the disciples were? 00:04:19.320 --> 00:04:21.559 And has it occurred to you that the story moves forward 00:04:21.559 --> 00:04:25.279 because at least one Jew magically got through the door? 00:04:25.279 --> 00:04:26.799 That would be Jesus. 00:04:28.679 --> 00:04:32.239 You know, so this selective use of language, 00:04:32.239 --> 00:04:35.519 thousands of years later, does unfortunately 00:04:35.519 --> 00:04:38.440 continue to perpetuate an unconscious bias. 00:04:38.440 --> 00:04:41.239 But what they're talking about here, 00:04:41.239 --> 00:04:43.200 you know, how can he come from God? 00:04:43.200 --> 00:04:44.640 I'm the bread come down from heaven, 00:04:44.640 --> 00:04:48.160 we know his family, and his answer to them is, 00:04:48.160 --> 00:04:50.679 well, no one can come to God unless they come 00:04:50.679 --> 00:04:53.399 to the one from whom God was sent. 00:04:53.399 --> 00:04:55.320 That's not the question they asked. 00:04:56.559 --> 00:05:00.320 He's trying to answer a Greek philosophical dualism question 00:05:00.320 --> 00:05:03.720 of how can God come out of the physical world? 00:05:03.720 --> 00:05:05.880 Because they had this dualistic sort of sense 00:05:05.880 --> 00:05:09.239 that God was too pure to be touched by the physical world, 00:05:09.239 --> 00:05:14.239 and he's trying to explain the Semitic Messiah story 00:05:15.519 --> 00:05:17.679 to a Greek crowd that has a whole different 00:05:17.679 --> 00:05:20.679 philosophical system, and it ain't working for him. 00:05:20.679 --> 00:05:24.679 So there's, so you've got that going on, 00:05:24.679 --> 00:05:28.480 but what survives from the other three Gospels 00:05:28.480 --> 00:05:33.119 that gets put into this story is that sense of 00:05:33.119 --> 00:05:35.760 if we know him, if he comes from our community, 00:05:35.760 --> 00:05:38.600 if we know his parents, if he's one of us, 00:05:38.600 --> 00:05:41.359 he couldn't possibly come from God. 00:05:42.359 --> 00:05:47.359 What is most common can't possibly rise above 00:05:47.399 --> 00:05:50.040 everything else and kind of be extraordinary. 00:05:50.040 --> 00:05:53.600 It's our willingness to pigeonhole people 00:05:53.600 --> 00:05:56.440 into the places we think they should be. 00:05:56.440 --> 00:05:58.320 And so, I mean, most of us have, 00:05:58.320 --> 00:06:00.359 if we look out even a little bit, 00:06:00.359 --> 00:06:03.320 maybe not an immediate sibling, maybe, 00:06:03.320 --> 00:06:05.320 maybe it's a cousin, but you know, 00:06:05.320 --> 00:06:07.839 I think most families have that person 00:06:07.839 --> 00:06:11.239 that just never seems to get their life together. 00:06:12.119 --> 00:06:13.959 That one that we just always worry about. 00:06:13.959 --> 00:06:15.640 And we've got him pigeonholed, 00:06:15.640 --> 00:06:18.279 and it might be a great comedy one day 00:06:18.279 --> 00:06:20.760 if we realize that they're the only person 00:06:20.760 --> 00:06:22.200 that has the right insight. 00:06:23.440 --> 00:06:25.160 And that they're the one that has the insight 00:06:25.160 --> 00:06:26.679 that might bring us to God. 00:06:27.839 --> 00:06:30.600 And slowly, God would use a dynamic like that 00:06:30.600 --> 00:06:32.320 to drive us all crazy. 00:06:33.440 --> 00:06:37.160 Because we have everyone put in their little boxes. 00:06:37.160 --> 00:06:39.519 We see this in education all the time, 00:06:39.519 --> 00:06:43.079 and there's such a fight against pigeonholing kids 00:06:43.079 --> 00:06:45.799 because of maybe the way they were in third grade, 00:06:45.799 --> 00:06:48.920 and we're afraid that the teachers won't let go of that, 00:06:48.920 --> 00:06:51.040 which I now see from the other side 00:06:51.040 --> 00:06:54.760 and realize that is so ridiculous. 00:06:54.760 --> 00:06:56.799 It's like the confessional. 00:06:56.799 --> 00:06:58.359 People come to me and they say later, 00:06:58.359 --> 00:07:00.119 oh, you know, I'm just always worried 00:07:00.119 --> 00:07:03.799 that he's gonna think bad of me after he hears. 00:07:03.799 --> 00:07:06.679 I don't want them to know that after about a week, 00:07:06.679 --> 00:07:09.440 I don't think I can remember a single confession. 00:07:10.839 --> 00:07:12.559 And even the ones I can remember, 00:07:12.559 --> 00:07:14.640 I can't remember whose they were. 00:07:17.359 --> 00:07:18.200 Why? 00:07:18.200 --> 00:07:20.200 Because I'm hearing them all the time. 00:07:20.200 --> 00:07:23.079 Now, someone comes in and they're pretty sure 00:07:23.079 --> 00:07:25.559 this confession's going to stick in his mind 00:07:25.559 --> 00:07:26.959 the rest of his life. 00:07:29.239 --> 00:07:31.760 Okay, you really are that important. 00:07:32.040 --> 00:07:36.600 Um, it just, you know, so we forget that. 00:07:36.600 --> 00:07:38.559 Probably the same with a teacher. 00:07:38.559 --> 00:07:40.679 When someone thinks it's been five years 00:07:40.679 --> 00:07:42.600 and they've just been thinking and waiting 00:07:42.600 --> 00:07:44.760 to get to my child. 00:07:44.760 --> 00:07:45.600 They're out after him. 00:07:45.600 --> 00:07:48.399 And I'm like, oh, paranoia there. 00:07:48.399 --> 00:07:49.959 Little overgrown ego. 00:07:49.959 --> 00:07:52.799 And this is what, you know, kids get, 00:07:52.799 --> 00:07:54.600 we're worried they'll get pigeonholed. 00:07:54.600 --> 00:07:56.760 We're worried even more, this was my experience, 00:07:56.760 --> 00:08:00.000 is they would get pigeonholed because of their siblings. 00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:01.239 You know, if you're following, 00:08:01.239 --> 00:08:03.559 and nothing's worse than following 00:08:03.559 --> 00:08:05.079 a bunch of gifted siblings, 00:08:05.079 --> 00:08:07.839 and you're expected to perform at the same level 00:08:07.839 --> 00:08:10.000 as the gifted siblings. 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:11.679 Now, mine was the opposite problem, 00:08:11.679 --> 00:08:13.519 but I've read about that problem. 00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:18.519 You know, my mother loves to tell the story 00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:21.640 that our middle school, I'm sorry, 00:08:21.640 --> 00:08:24.799 our junior high, for those of you that don't know, 00:08:24.799 --> 00:08:28.119 when I was in school, it was back at a time 00:08:28.200 --> 00:08:30.279 even live theater was still in black and white. 00:08:30.279 --> 00:08:32.000 I mean, it was a while ago. 00:08:33.479 --> 00:08:37.440 But in junior high, the principal told my mother one time, 00:08:37.440 --> 00:08:39.119 I was like maybe in ninth grade, 00:08:39.119 --> 00:08:41.760 seven, eight, nine was junior high in the Springs, 00:08:41.760 --> 00:08:44.719 and she said, the principal said to her, 00:08:44.719 --> 00:08:49.719 Dom Malika said, Pat Dolan, is he one of yours? 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:53.000 Now remember, I was number six of the boys, 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:54.320 and they were all boys. 00:08:54.320 --> 00:08:56.200 My sister was the youngest, 00:08:56.200 --> 00:08:57.359 but I was the youngest of the boys. 00:08:57.960 --> 00:08:58.799 Is he one of yours? 00:08:58.799 --> 00:09:01.239 And my mom immediately said, what did he do? 00:09:03.599 --> 00:09:05.640 Oh, nothing, I've never met him, 00:09:05.640 --> 00:09:06.640 he's never been in my office, 00:09:06.640 --> 00:09:09.200 so I just kind of assumed he wasn't one of yours. 00:09:13.080 --> 00:09:15.119 So I had the opposite sort of issue, 00:09:15.119 --> 00:09:20.119 if teachers knew, but we worry about pigeonholing kids, 00:09:20.239 --> 00:09:21.739 pigeonholing people. 00:09:21.739 --> 00:09:25.520 Society tends to socioeconomically pigeonhole people. 00:09:26.039 --> 00:09:28.159 It's the basis of so much prejudice, 00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:31.000 and it happens both ways. 00:09:31.000 --> 00:09:33.799 We either decide that those people over there 00:09:33.799 --> 00:09:36.200 are problematic, or at a deep level, 00:09:36.200 --> 00:09:39.359 we really don't believe that the people 00:09:39.359 --> 00:09:42.599 that I'm surrounded with that I know every day 00:09:42.599 --> 00:09:45.000 can become something better. 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:47.640 I mean, most of us have had one friend 00:09:47.640 --> 00:09:50.239 or someone in our life, and whether it's smoking 00:09:50.239 --> 00:09:53.320 or drinking or language or anything, 00:09:53.359 --> 00:09:55.359 this time I'm really gonna quit. 00:09:56.440 --> 00:10:00.359 And a little part of our head doesn't wanna believe them, 00:10:00.359 --> 00:10:02.200 doesn't wanna believe that they might rise 00:10:02.200 --> 00:10:03.559 above the expectations, 00:10:03.559 --> 00:10:05.640 because they've disappointed us before. 00:10:06.919 --> 00:10:09.440 No one necessarily wants to believe that, 00:10:09.440 --> 00:10:11.039 and we don't know, we don't get any of the stories 00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:14.239 of Jesus's growing up. 00:10:14.239 --> 00:10:16.479 No one wants to hear that the neighborhood kid 00:10:16.479 --> 00:10:19.599 who ran through their garden and ruined their plants 00:10:19.599 --> 00:10:21.679 when he was 12 is going to save them. 00:10:22.679 --> 00:10:25.520 I mean, you can just imagine, 00:10:25.520 --> 00:10:28.200 but I think that this story gets put in the middle 00:10:28.200 --> 00:10:32.080 of this long chapter on the bread of life, 00:10:32.080 --> 00:10:34.440 because for us, later in the church, 00:10:34.440 --> 00:10:36.679 not that, but for us, we keep revisiting it 00:10:36.679 --> 00:10:40.200 because it is the sense of Eucharist. 00:10:40.200 --> 00:10:43.359 Bread and wine, what could be more common? 00:10:43.359 --> 00:10:45.799 What could be more ordinary than bread and wine? 00:10:45.799 --> 00:10:49.359 To take the most common, ordinary elements 00:10:49.359 --> 00:10:52.640 of a culture and say, we're going to watch, 00:10:52.640 --> 00:10:54.000 we're going to, with our hearts, 00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:56.640 we're going to believe in a transformation 00:10:56.640 --> 00:11:00.919 of the most common becoming the most extraordinary. 00:11:01.960 --> 00:11:04.719 We're going to, you know, I always think 00:11:04.719 --> 00:11:07.960 that the first step to belief in the Eucharist 00:11:07.960 --> 00:11:11.359 is that we have to stop pigeonholing bread and wine. 00:11:12.919 --> 00:11:15.599 We have to stop the belief that I know what something is, 00:11:15.599 --> 00:11:17.640 and once I know it and I understand it, 00:11:17.640 --> 00:11:21.000 my understanding it is more important to me 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:22.719 than allowing it to transform. 00:11:24.280 --> 00:11:27.200 Because, you know, the world transforms, 00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:29.719 and people who don't like change, 00:11:29.719 --> 00:11:33.960 it's because change makes them feel out of control. 00:11:33.960 --> 00:11:36.599 I barely understand the way things are. 00:11:36.599 --> 00:11:41.159 I was having a conversation with a parishioner the other day 00:11:41.159 --> 00:11:43.599 a few weeks back, and we were talking about 00:11:43.599 --> 00:11:46.479 trying to keep up on everything that goes on, 00:11:46.479 --> 00:11:50.200 and she mentioned that there was someone in her family 00:11:50.200 --> 00:11:53.239 or someone that she knew, and she said, 00:11:53.239 --> 00:11:55.239 they were talking about transgender, 00:11:55.239 --> 00:11:56.840 and I knew what that meant, and I said, 00:11:56.840 --> 00:11:59.440 oh, well, you know, now they talk about non-binary. 00:12:00.760 --> 00:12:01.799 And she looked at me and she said, 00:12:01.799 --> 00:12:03.479 look, I have nothing against anyone, 00:12:03.479 --> 00:12:05.960 but I am too old to learn more words. 00:12:05.960 --> 00:12:10.960 But that may be the best, most honest answer I've ever heard. 00:12:11.960 --> 00:12:14.679 My real problem with change, 00:12:14.679 --> 00:12:17.760 I can disguise it as moral and spiritual. 00:12:17.760 --> 00:12:20.760 I'm just, I don't want to learn anything more. 00:12:21.679 --> 00:12:23.239 My gosh. 00:12:23.239 --> 00:12:25.960 And if we could get it back to the way I was 00:12:25.960 --> 00:12:28.479 when I was a child, the reason I want the world 00:12:28.479 --> 00:12:29.840 back the way it was when I was a child 00:12:29.840 --> 00:12:33.520 is because, you know, at 57 years old, 00:12:33.520 --> 00:12:36.599 I can finally understand the world when I was six. 00:12:37.000 --> 00:12:39.200 So easy. 00:12:39.200 --> 00:12:41.440 And I've had years to deal with that. 00:12:41.440 --> 00:12:44.320 So the first thing we see in this gospel 00:12:44.320 --> 00:12:48.400 is the reason they can't believe in Jesus 00:12:48.400 --> 00:12:50.960 is because he's one of us. 00:12:52.159 --> 00:12:57.159 And for all the times that we are so put off 00:12:57.320 --> 00:12:59.359 by those people over there, 00:12:59.359 --> 00:13:01.919 we start to realize that dynamic sinks in, 00:13:01.919 --> 00:13:04.559 and we're eventually not much happier 00:13:04.559 --> 00:13:06.159 with these people over here. 00:13:07.440 --> 00:13:09.760 You know, it's very hard, 00:13:09.760 --> 00:13:14.200 this is always the problem with real bigotry and prejudice 00:13:14.200 --> 00:13:17.080 is we cannot be more than one person. 00:13:17.080 --> 00:13:20.840 And let me tell you, when someone is hatefully, 00:13:20.840 --> 00:13:24.119 hatefully prejudiced about another group, 00:13:24.119 --> 00:13:27.479 they're eventually hateful about their family as well. 00:13:27.479 --> 00:13:32.320 I don't believe that anyone really spends time in the world 00:13:32.320 --> 00:13:34.159 angry and hating people, 00:13:34.159 --> 00:13:37.440 but brings a loving person home to the family every day. 00:13:37.440 --> 00:13:39.159 It doesn't happen. 00:13:39.159 --> 00:13:42.239 No one goes out into traffic screaming and yelling 00:13:42.239 --> 00:13:44.960 at every other single person in traffic 00:13:44.960 --> 00:13:48.520 and arrives home a calm and wonderful spouse. 00:13:49.880 --> 00:13:53.760 And so, you know, everything we're doing in the world 00:13:53.760 --> 00:13:56.039 is transforming the person who will go home 00:13:56.039 --> 00:13:57.919 to our lucky family tonight. 00:13:59.239 --> 00:14:01.159 And so I always think when people get married, 00:14:01.159 --> 00:14:03.400 I always think that love and honor one another, 00:14:03.440 --> 00:14:05.239 you know, we think how do you honor someone? 00:14:05.239 --> 00:14:07.880 Well, you know, every five years or so, 00:14:07.880 --> 00:14:09.080 you throw them a dinner. 00:14:10.039 --> 00:14:11.840 That in our culture is how we honor people. 00:14:11.840 --> 00:14:15.159 We honor artists, we honor, we throw them a dinner. 00:14:15.159 --> 00:14:18.080 But honoring a spouse is like understanding 00:14:18.080 --> 00:14:19.400 that every moment of my life, 00:14:19.400 --> 00:14:22.280 I'm building the person that they get to live with. 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:27.239 Every time I let myself just loop into more anger 00:14:27.239 --> 00:14:29.559 and more anger and it becomes my way of life, 00:14:29.559 --> 00:14:30.880 that's who they live with. 00:14:30.880 --> 00:14:33.039 Every time I hold back and hold back 00:14:33.679 --> 00:14:35.239 until I really can't share too much of who I am, 00:14:35.239 --> 00:14:36.479 that's who they live with. 00:14:36.479 --> 00:14:38.719 And in a larger sense, we do that in society. 00:14:39.640 --> 00:14:41.080 We're building the person 00:14:41.080 --> 00:14:43.440 the people around us get to live with. 00:14:43.440 --> 00:14:46.080 And I think we have this sense that what comes 00:14:46.080 --> 00:14:50.440 from our most common experience of life 00:14:50.440 --> 00:14:52.559 is not the extraordinary. 00:14:53.599 --> 00:14:55.280 The grace of God, I said this last week, 00:14:55.280 --> 00:14:57.559 the grace of God is the most common thing in the world 00:14:57.559 --> 00:14:59.080 and the most extraordinary. 00:14:59.960 --> 00:15:01.960 That's the paradox of our faith, 00:15:01.960 --> 00:15:05.080 is to truly believe that what is most common 00:15:05.080 --> 00:15:07.119 is incredibly extraordinary. 00:15:07.119 --> 00:15:08.440 We're about to do baptisms 00:15:08.440 --> 00:15:12.359 and I don't want to get into trouble with the parents, 00:15:12.359 --> 00:15:16.479 but I look at the number of children in this parish. 00:15:16.479 --> 00:15:20.599 Having two babies, most common thing in the world, 00:15:21.880 --> 00:15:23.719 doesn't make them less extraordinary. 00:15:24.799 --> 00:15:28.119 But you don't, neither, every parent thinks 00:15:28.119 --> 00:15:30.799 that their child is the most amazing, most special, 00:15:30.799 --> 00:15:32.280 but I've never heard one say, 00:15:32.280 --> 00:15:34.320 I don't think anyone's ever had a baby. 00:15:35.359 --> 00:15:40.080 You know, and if you do, check with your doctor, 00:15:40.080 --> 00:15:41.440 something's gone wrong. 00:15:42.799 --> 00:15:44.960 You know, I mean, they know. 00:15:44.960 --> 00:15:47.039 As a matter of fact, when someone says, 00:15:47.039 --> 00:15:49.679 I want to be a father, I want to be a mother, 00:15:49.679 --> 00:15:50.760 they're not trying to be something 00:15:50.760 --> 00:15:52.679 that's never happened before. 00:15:52.679 --> 00:15:55.039 They want to join a group of people. 00:15:56.159 --> 00:15:58.840 What's most common in our midst 00:15:58.840 --> 00:16:00.960 is often the most extraordinary. 00:16:00.960 --> 00:16:03.960 And if we really can't believe that, 00:16:03.960 --> 00:16:06.119 I don't know that we can ever get 00:16:06.119 --> 00:16:08.280 to a real faith in the Eucharist.

Father Pat’s message centers on the profound spiritual truth that God often chooses the ordinary and familiar to reveal the extraordinary. He underscores how the Gospel of John, though linguistically and philosophically complex, invites believers to see beyond surface familiarity—such as knowing Jesus’ earthly family—and into the mysterious reality of divine presence in the everyday. Drawing from this, Father Pat challenges us to examine our tendency to pigeonhole people, to underestimate the sacred potential in those closest to us, and even in ourselves. He weaves together theology, cultural commentary, and humor to emphasize that the grace of God is both the most common and the most extraordinary reality—especially revealed in the Eucharist, through the humble elements of bread and wine. Father Pat begins by explaining the unique nature of the Gospel of John, which he characterizes as "Johannine" in style—philosophical, wordy, and aimed at a Greek-speaking audience. Unlike the more straightforward synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), John’s Gospel reflects an effort to translate Semitic religious ideas into a framework understandable to those shaped by Greek philosophical dualism. This dualism, which regards the physical world as separate and often inferior to the spiritual, makes the claim that Jesus—whom people knew as a carpenter’s son—has “come down from heaven” difficult to accept. John’s Gospel is thus grappling not only with theological truths but also with cultural translation. Father Pat also addresses the subtle but real antisemitic bias embedded in the narrative structure of John. He observes that when people support Jesus, they are called the crowd, the disciples, the followers. But when they question or oppose him, they are referred to as “the Jews,” a distinction that reflects the growing rift between the early Christian and Jewish communities at the time of the Gospel’s writing. He cautions against reading this labeling without historical and cultural awareness, reminding us that Jesus and his disciples were themselves Jews. This selective language has perpetuated unconscious biases through the centuries, and recognizing it helps dismantle harmful interpretations. The core of Father Pat’s reflection, however, is not academic but deeply pastoral and spiritual. He zeros in on the crowd’s rejection of Jesus based on familiarity: “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph?” This question reveals a universal human tendency—to dismiss the extraordinary when it comes clothed in the ordinary. We do this with Jesus, and we do it with each other. We pigeonhole people based on their past, their family, their status, or their perceived limitations. Whether it’s the black sheep in the family, a student judged by a sibling’s performance, or a coworker underestimated due to background, we often resist the idea that someone familiar can be the bearer of divine wisdom or transformation. Father Pat uses humor and personal anecdotes to illustrate how deeply this bias is embedded in our relationships and institutions. He speaks about how students can be unfairly labeled based on a sibling’s behavior or how adults continue to define themselves and others by outdated assumptions. He draws a parallel between this dynamic and how we resist spiritual transformation—how we cling to what we think we know rather than opening ourselves to the mystery of grace. This leads into his meditation on the Eucharist—the heart of Catholic faith. Bread and wine are among the most common, unremarkable elements of daily life. And yet, the Church teaches that in the Eucharist, they become the Body and Blood of Christ. The key to believing in this mystery, Father Pat says, is learning not to pigeonhole even the most ordinary things. If we can recognize that God can work through the common, the familiar, and the everyday, then we are on the path to Eucharistic faith. It is not about understanding the transformation with our intellects, but about allowing our hearts to be transformed by the possibility that the divine dwells in what we most often overlook. He expands this insight to the broader human experience. The grace of God, he says, is both the most common and the most extraordinary thing in the world. It is found in every moment, every interaction, every person. When we allow anger, bitterness, or prejudice to shape us, we become the person that others—including our families—have to live with. When we are open to grace, to transformation, and to love, we become vessels of the extraordinary. Thus, honoring someone—whether a spouse, a child, or a stranger—is not about grand gestures but about shaping ourselves into people worthy of being in relationship with others. Finally, Father Pat returns to the idea that the most extraordinary truths come through the most ordinary means. The Gospel, the Eucharist, and even our own lives testify to the divine paradox: that God chooses the common to reveal the sacred. Faith, then, is not about escaping the ordinary, but about learning to see the divine within it.
