Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to the crowds, This is how it is with the kingdom of God. As it is if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day, and through it all the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear, and when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come. He said to what shall I compare the kingdom of God or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade. With many such parables he spoke to them, the word, as they were able to understand it, and without parables he did not speak to them. But to his own disciples he explained everything in private, the gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Too much emphasis and even probably some odd interpretations of the last line of today's gospel launched centuries of probably the most pernicious heresy in the church, which was called Gnosticism, which is kind of the basis for the whole Da Vinci Code sort of thing, the Illuminati. There are people with secret information and if you, you know, protect the secret information, you're doing God's work. And if you're fully initiated, then you have the secret information and you're going to be saved. It was all the heresy because information doesn't save you. You know, Jesus saved people and, you know, immediately people were like, well, you know, the rest of you just have parables, but the disciples, they were given it straight down and it's been handed on secretly. You know, we love conspiracy theories because they make us feel like we're, you know, we're not in control of the world, but at least I understand it better than the rest of you and you just don't understand that there are aliens here. You know, it sort of gives us a nice intellectual boost to come up with something that's a little crazy and the rest of the world doesn't see. But this opening parable has this sort of desire to get us to notice what happens when we're not paying attention. You know, a farmer will generally use the phrase and he's not being dishonest, it's just the way we speak, you know, that, well, you know, I grow corn or I grow wheat but none of that's true. They tend crops. Crops grow themselves. Now, you have to tend them and you have to work hard to make sure everything works right, give them the optimal circumstance, but they grow while you're sleeping. Field A still grows while you're working on field B. You know, every single plant gets very little individual attention and continues to grow when you're not there. So we just tend to not recognize what's going on, you know, except moment by moment, certain moments pop out and stick in our memory. And many of you have heard me, you know, before it's one of the bizarre questions that kind of eats at me in my life is that I know all of us only remember a fraction of our past. I mean, even those of you, I would imagine most of you it might take you a moment, but you could probably come up with what you had for lunch yesterday. If I asked you how many bites, probably not. If I asked you what you had two weeks ago, probably not. So even yesterday, you might have collapsed yesterday into a few facts that your mind will take with you. There are even sleep psychologists who believe that that's actually what the process of dreaming is. It sorts through your day and decides what to chunk into long-term memory and what to jettison. Maybe, who knows. All I know is we think that we've been formed by our life. And I always think, actually, we've been formed by the memories we hold on to. What if you had a whole different set of memories from your life? I have a magnet on my refrigerator with a picture of Jesus on the hilltop preaching. And it says, now pay attention because I don't want four versions of this out there. You know, I mean, John records a whole different set of memories from Jesus' life. You know, what happens if that shift happens? And what happens when we start to notice the things we don't always notice, the deeper movements? Now, not nearly as eloquent as the Scripture, I always tell the schoolchildren what I call the parable of the peanut butter sandwich, which most children between the age of maybe five and seven, maybe for their first time, you know, they get out two slices of bread and they get out the peanut butter and the jelly and they spread it on. And they've made lunch by themselves for their first time. And in their mind, that gets cemented as an achievement. And you don't want to take the achievement away. But at what point do we point out to them that that's not nearly as much of an achievement as a deep experience of the worldwide community? Because that child doesn't know how to make peanut butter or grow a peanut. That child doesn't know how to grow wheat or make bread. Doesn't have a clue how to make jam. But they made that sandwich. They were part of something that was much bigger. You know, they were part of. And it's not that it's bad to sense that accomplishment. But, you know, where the entitlement thing that we always hear about today, where that starts to come in is we think we're making our own lunch until we show up one day and mom or dad forgot to put peanut butter in that cupboard. Now we're upset, you know. Because we just, there's so much that has fallen into place. And when it's not there, we miss it. But we don't notice how much is there in our life that keeps things from going completely, you know, off the axis. And so when our life does spin out of control, we become very aware. And so, you know, Jesus says, you know, a lot of stuff goes on behind the scenes all the time. God's grace is working in our life all the time and we don't see it. So we start to think it's not there. And where we experience it is when we're willing to look at that larger community that we belong to. You know, we can get focused on, I made the sandwich. And not only did I make the sandwich, you know, it takes about 10 minutes for me to decide. And there's a right way to make the sandwich. You cut it from corner to corner. None of this down the middle stuff. And then we start, you know, creating camps of the right way to make a sandwich. And none of us really want to notice that we're all dependent on the same larger community to even start. You know, it happens. I always think that, you know, we hear so much nowadays. I've always thought it's been going on for years. People, if anyone tells you, if you hear the phrase, the fall of democracy, what it usually means is they're not embracing what I like at the moment. But the actual fall has been happening for years as we've watched less people vote. I mean, that's democracy. If you want, if you want to see, if you want to see democracy's real voice, you try to get everyone to vote. Not because they'll agree with me on my vote, but because we just try and get everyone to vote. And people who that makes very uncomfortable don't want to tell you, but they don't like democracy. You know, the idea that everyone's equal. See, that's the spirituality of democracy, not the politics of it. The spirituality is everyone's equal. And most people, I think in this country, where we've maybe lost our love for democracy, is most of us vote to get our agenda furthered rather than if we vote, we should vote because it's a deep ritual of belonging. It's a deep moment where your opinion won't mean any more than anyone else's, but it won't mean any less. And it's a belonging to the whole. And you can't put that message out there because it's not as exciting as getting across my agenda. That's why I vote. I vote because, you know, if the rest of the world was smarter than me, they'd all vote this way. You know, rarely do I meet people who will say, well, this is my vote, but I'm kind of dumb. No, we're all smarter than everyone else. You know, I always watch in church politics, you know, in church politics, you know, everyone will tell you, you have to follow the bishops until the bishops say something I don't like. You know, and that happens clear up to the Pope. And the Pope is the Pope until I don't like what the Pope said. And so, you know, and that's not a horrible bad thing. It's just that once you've done that, it's harder the following week to try and go to the same people and say, well, you have to listen to the bishops because you already decided not to the week before. And what most of us really believe is that the Pope and the bishops are infallible when they agree with me. We don't want to admit that that's where we're at, but a lot of us are there. And we get that way in religion and in politics and in family and in all sorts of things because it's hard for us to conceive of how large the group of humanity that we belong to is. It's why in a country, why is everyone so fascinated with polarizing and dividing and chopping everything up right now? And it's because then you're a big fish in a little pond. I just hang around the people who think like I do, and since there's only three of us, I'm important. You know, if there's, you know, 325 million of us, then my voice is just one. And that can be frustrating, but it can also be that deeper sense of belonging. I have a ritual. I do this every two years at the midterms and the big elections, and that's where I always walk to vote. I always—well, it's just down at the, you know, it's down at University and the highway. And so I usually take the walk down. And, you know, it's just a really—I don't know why I get into this weird place every time I'm going down there that's sort of like this— it's very freeing to know that my vote will be added, but it's not going to decide anything. But there's a deep belonging to it. And I think the reason people get discouraged is because someone told them, you know, when they said, your vote will matter, they think, oh, so mine will tip the balance? No, it will matter because you will belong. And belonging just isn't as important to us nowadays as I need people to hear me. I need people to know what I'm thinking. It's why social media is exploding. I see now on social media the two words that I believe should never, ever, ever go together, and people use these all the time. And it's a way that we divide the world so that we can feel that everyone thinks like us. It's called community filter. That has got to be the ugliest phrase I've ever heard. I have a community filter, and I don't want to tell you how many of you just don't make it through my filter. Okay, all of you, but it's, you know, I don't go out on social media ever. I'm actually—you probably all come through the filter, and if I ever check in, I'll see you. But that idea that I'm going to filter the community so that I'll believe more people that are higher, you know, 90% of the people that I let on my page agree with me. What does that mean? Does that mean that your opinion's smart or that your filters are strong? You know, we'd rather be a big fish in a little pond. And what Jesus says is, you belong to a very, very large pond. The ocean's a scary place. That's what we're called to belong. We're called to belong to something bigger and deeper. And it's not as exciting, and it's not as bombastic, and it's not as, you know, biting, and it doesn't tear us apart. But we belong. And I thought, you know, it would really be an interesting healing moment in our country, in our church, in everything, to say, what happens when people say, oh yeah, well, I vote because that's how I'm part of the group. It's a sense of belonging. Not it's how I manipulate the group, not it's how I persuade the group, but it's how I belong. Because I think, you know, this, I'll notice this in the school once in a while, if a parent is upset with something, they won't come to you until they've got a posse behind them. And you know, I don't want to upset anyone who's ever done this, but whenever someone comes to me and says, you know, I've been talking to a lot of parents and they all feel the same way. Now, you have to know what I hear is, I've been talking to a lot of parents and not one of them has been willing to tell me I'm crazy to my face. Maybe they really do agree, but since you know they probably wouldn't tell you if they didn't, rather than, I feel comfortable coming in and saying, I don't know if other people think like this, it's how I think, it's one opinion, and I can still state it. I don't need to have a posse behind me to believe I have a point. To be able to come in and say, this is my point. You know, I don't have to think, I'll sway the whole country to go to a ballot box and say, but this is mine. I don't have to pretend I'm like everyone else to come into the church and be acceptable. That we bring the truth of who we are to everything we do, and we are one person in the world. It's kind of a delicate maturity that we're called to. God's grace just keeps moving on in us. And I think that what we'll find is, not that there isn't all sorts of activism in the world that can be a good thing. You know, going out and fighting for a cause can do things to change the world. Now we're upset, you know.

Because we just, there's so much that has fallen into place.

And when it's not there, we miss it.

But we don't notice how much is there in our life

that keeps things from going completely, you know, off the axis.
