When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. And when they found him across the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you get here? Jesus answered and said, Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal. So they said to him, what can we do to accomplish the works of God? Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God that you believe in the one he sent. So they said to him, what sign can you do that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert. As it is written, he gave them bread from heaven to eat. So Jesus said to them, Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven. My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. The bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. So they said to him, Sir, give us this bread always. Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The Gospel writer has given us an incredible mishmash of information in this reading. He's got about seven themes going on that he's starting to tie together. And if you're reading the Gospel in a study group, it's one thing If, you know, you get this little cliff notes of chapter six here thrown at you for Sunday, you know, we just have to pick a few things and go with it. And if I miss some of the themes, come back in three years, it comes back around again. It's John's Gospel. He is writing for a Greek audience, so he can't use any of the tricks that the other synoptics would use, which is why if you were to read all four Gospels, you would quickly realize that Jesus, if you know the cultural references, but you see the differences whether you could name him or not, in the first three Gospels, Jesus sounds like a rabbi. And in the fourth Gospel, he sounds like a Greek philosopher. His sentence structure changes, it gets long, it gets wordy, the average sentence takes a page, you know. You know, it's a Greek, he's writing in that style that the Greek audience will understand. And it's not dishonest, it's not misquoting, it's knowing your audience and your audience knowing what you're doing. The audience knew that he was not writing a biography. We got a little stupid later on in history and decided he was, and then if it's not a biography, it must be dishonest, because we decided that's what it had to be. You know, we changed the expectation over time, not the Gospels. And so we've got this interesting Greek commentary on an old Jewish story that no one understood to begin with. They'd never heard the story of Moses in the desert, this was a Greek community that was hearing this Gospel. And so the meaning of the early story gets changed a little. And Jesus talks about the bread coming down from heaven and that being the word of life and God and Jesus, and that's not what the bread in the desert was. It was a miracle of food, it was, you know, it was the Old Testament story, that's what it was meant to be. But it brings us head to head with what I think are two warring dynamics in religion that do not trace back to Jesus, they trace back centuries before Jesus, and it's best exemplified in Judaism by the law and the prophets. Most of us will approach our religion through one or the other. And Jesus definitely tries to move everyone towards the prophetic approach. So to come to Jesus, to believe in Jesus was to believe in that, the primacy of the prophetic approach. And what that approach was, was prophetic Christianity says it's our job to go out and be with the poor and speak truth to power and try to make the world a more just place and find those who are suffering and raise their lives up a little, even if it means we have to give away some of our stuff, because most of us could give more and still be happy. And this is this prophetic vision, and the prophets cry out against it again and again and again and again, and then you have the law approach, which we tend to favor because at least for a few, it's easier. The law is what I call a trinket-based religion, where I haven't really done anything for anyone this week, but, you know, I prayed with the right rosary beads, I prayed to the right saint, I went to the right church, I looked at the right stained glass window, I'm holy. And this is where our religion becomes a substitute for actual holiness. We use the religious trinkets to make us feel I'm doing all the right stuff. I do it the right way. I go to that church and not that church because that priest holds his hands at the wrong angles and I don't like it. And holiness is this angle and not that angle, or, you know. Cardinal Bernadine told the story of going to town hall meetings in Chicago when he was the cardinal there. And he said, you know, the practice was he would go in and he would talk with the kids, the youth groups, all afternoon, and then he'd talk with the adults in the evening. And he said you could just see how religion had kind of, he said, you know, really had twisted their approach to their faith in some ways because the kids would be like, this was back in the 90s, what is the church doing about the crisis in Serbo-Croatia? What are they doing about this? How are we responding to this? The kids, all day long. And then he'd get to the adults and they'd say, you know, Father Bob washes his hands and Father Pete doesn't. Which one is correct? And they'd gone from the difference between being good or being indifferent to which one's right and which one's wrong. Simpler, but not necessarily the path of holiness. And people like it because a trinket religion, I can get done in 20 minutes a day. Boom, done, holy, get on with life. But that call to say, how much of my life do I spend helping other people? And it may not be that you got out, you know, did you help other people? It doesn't mean you spent the week and you can tell me when you worked for a charity that's recognized by the nonprofit status organization. You know, nothing like that. There may be people that you've reached out individually. Who do we help in our lives? And how much of our lives do we give to helping people not to get anything back, not to get a repayment, not even to get to heaven? I think, I've said this before, but I think it is the hardest part of our faith to get into our subconscious mind, which is Jesus did not come and go through all that suffering so he could get to heaven. He was there to begin with. He didn't do that for himself. Jesus isn't given a payoff. And so we can't follow Jesus for the sake of our own payoff. By doing that, we're not really following him. But what we can do is form ourselves in the gospel. And that's where this reading asks us to do something that we don't really quite get. When it says, you know, whoever believes in me. Now there are two phrases that come up in today's liturgy that I think they're among my least favorite Christian bumper stickers. One is from the first reading, God will provide. I've always hated that. Not because it's a lovely vision of God. God will provide. But it's really like saying, my family really, really likes. I mean, they like what? God will provide. What? We don't know, just shut up. God will provide. It's like, because that gets misconstrued, and then people end up hurt and disappointed. I prayed for someone with failing health, and they passed away anyway. What did God provide? There are people who pray and still starve to death. There are people who are praying and are holy and they still can't find a job. And they still feel alone in the world. And they've never found the relationship they wanted. So we ordain them. Just joking. So sad. No. What is it we think God will provide? And all of a sudden, we get a little uneasy. But if we can't articulate it, then we'll get something odd in our head, and it will be disappointed. God will not provide what we want always. And we try to come up with reasons. Well, it's because God knows what's good for us. It's because that's not the promise. There is a real sort of uber sense to what that means. God will provide means everything that happens in my life is provided by God. God is what keeps me breathing. God is the spark of life. You know, I've told you this year, you know, I've been struggling with these migraine headaches, and they haven't been horrific, but they're there. And when I wake up with a migraine, I have one of two choices. I can either say, it's a migraine, where's God? Or I woke up, there's God, with the migraine. So, you know, I could want more. But I woke up. Life is still not panned out exactly as it was supposed to in my mind, and not everything happened the way I wanted. But I woke up. I have another day. And I can choose to use that day to be more connected to God and to the mission or not, regardless of what else is going on. And so the other phrase that we come to that becomes very, could be very divisive if we can't figure out what it means is, you know, those who believe in me, Jesus says, those who believe in me. That is another one of those phrases that could mean about six different things. You know, most people now think what it means is people in the world have heard the story of Jesus and Buddha and Mohammed and Lao Tzu and all of these, and they have to pick the right story. And if they pick the right story and say that's the true story, then they believe in Jesus. Now, that's certainly not what my parents would have meant if they looked at me and said, we want you to know we believe in you. That's not like, oh, so they know I exist. No, now it means something terribly different. If you have people in your life you believe in, that you believe in the goodness of their message, you believe that they can help the world, you believe what it means. I think when we start to say I believe in Jesus, we have to first say, what do I really mean when I look at a person and say I believe in them? I believe in the goodness of their heart and their mission. And that we can get to a lot of just through scripture. We can figure out Jesus was moving us towards that prophet vision. He was moving us away from, there's a lot of stories where Jesus took religious rituals and went, yeah, let's put those over here, let's get back to helping these people. Over and over again, when he moves the, when he tells them to make water in the ritual, make wine, he makes wine out of the ritual water jars. That would be like me doing a magic trick with the tabernacle. Those were the ritual jars. Now how's anyone going to wash their hands to come into the wedding feast? He just took the ritual jars and made wine out of them and said, yeah, serve this. You could, I mean, I can see people's head blowing up if that were a modern day religion. That he had just desecrated holy vessels, you know. But the welcome was more important than the ritual. You know, there are moments constantly through the scripture where he will say, you know, we weren't made to serve the Sabbath. The Sabbath was made to serve humanity. Go out and do the work. So he keeps taking that tact. So do we believe in that? It's harder than believing in, well, I just do the ritualized stuff. And then I get home with my life and I present myself to the world as someone who always goes to mass and always does my prayers and all. But we need to, if we believe in Jesus, we believe in the way of changing the world is through that prophetic message. And I think to be formed in the gospel is something we've had backwards for many years. Because I think if you said, I'm going to be formed in the gospel and then I'm going to go out and help the world, I think that's already backwards. But what we will do is, well, I'll start with a study group, I will read the gospels, I'll get the gospels in my head, I'll let them teach me, then I will do some prayer, I'll do spirituality, and this will propel me into the world to do charity. Statistics would tell us it's worked 20% of the time so far. A lot of people do all that spirituality stuff and you say, so how many hours a week do you spend just out there helping the poor? I'm going to get, it's going to propel me there any day now. It's going to happen. But we tell ourselves we're religious, we're spiritual, we believe in the gospel. But Jesus, you'll notice, he does not say to his disciples at one point, I want you to go out into the world and I want you, this is my, I was trying to set this timer that's saying, shut up, it's time. It didn't work. This voice that says to his disciples, he doesn't say, I'm going to send you two by two, take no provisions and go to seminary. No. He says, you go out and you encounter these people and you see their needs and you become informed by their lives and you see the suffering they're going through and you go out and he sends them across into the Samaritan areas and outside of their own culture and see how other people live and be formed in the gospel. And then that formation, you bring that back and you start reading the scriptures that didn't exist at that time, the gospels and the letters of Paul, you know. You come back and you read them through the lens you've gotten being formed in the charity of Christ. I think we think we have to go through a course in spirituality to be formed in Jesus rather than you go out in the world and you encounter people in need and that's how you're formed in the heart of Jesus. And then you can bring that back to your scripture reading and your study and your prayer and our gathering. And that's when we start to see the world change. I think the easy method is we're going to stay very still and pray until my heart is moved to go out into the world. You know, our heart, we will never, if you're waiting for your heart, your heart might be ready tomorrow and back away again on Tuesday. We commit because we believe in the message of Jesus. We believe in that basic life we believe. I don't think when Jesus told them to go out and help the poor, they all went, this is radically new. Thank goodness God told us that. We never noticed the suffering before. Before Jesus came, people were okay with suffering. No, he told them things they already knew. He was telling them, you know, follow your heart. Quit worrying about whether am I Christian, am I religious, am I patriotic, am I whatever it is. Are you being authentically human and listening to the suffering of other people? That's the gospel we're formed in. The audience knew that he was not writing a biography.

You know, we changed the expectation over time, not the Gospels.

And so we've got this interesting Greek commentary

on an old Jewish story that no one understood to begin with.

They'd never heard the story of Moses in the desert,

this was a Greek community that was hearing this Gospel.

And so the meaning of the early story gets changed a little.

And Jesus talks about the bread coming down from heaven

and that being the word of life and God and Jesus,

and that's not what the bread in the desert was.

It was a miracle of food, it was, you know, it was the Old Testament story,

that's what it was meant to be.

But it brings us head to head with what I think are two warring dynamics in religion

that do not trace back to Jesus, they trace back centuries before Jesus,

and it's best exemplified in Judaism by the law and the prophets.

Most of us will approach our religion through one or the other.

And Jesus definitely tries to move everyone towards the prophetic approach.

So to come to Jesus, to believe in Jesus was to believe in that,

the primacy of the prophetic approach.

And what that approach was, was prophetic Christianity says it's our job

to go out and be with the poor and speak truth to power

and try to make the world a more just place

and find those who are suffering and raise their lives up a little,

even if it means we have to give away some of our stuff,

because most of us could give more and still be happy.

And this is this prophetic vision,

and the prophets cry out against it again and again and again and again,

and then you have the law approach, which we tend to favor

because at least for a few, it's easier.

The law is what I call a trinket-based religion,

where I haven't really done anything for anyone this week,

but, you know, I prayed with the right rosary beads,

I prayed to the right saint, I went to the right church,

I looked at the right stained glass window, I'm holy.

And this is where our religion becomes a substitute for actual holiness.

We use the religious trinkets to make us feel I'm doing all the right stuff.

I do it the right way.

I go to that church and not that church

because that priest holds his hands at the wrong angles and I don't like it.

And holiness is this angle and not that angle, or, you know.

Cardinal Bernadine told the story of going to town hall meetings in Chicago

when he was the cardinal there.

And he said, you know, the practice was he would go in

and he would talk with the kids, the youth groups, all afternoon,

and then he'd talk with the adults in the evening.

you know, really had twisted their approach to their faith in some ways

Which one is correct?

And they'd gone from the difference between being good or being indifferent

to which one's right and which one's wrong.

Simpler, but not necessarily the path of holiness.

And people like it because a trinket religion,

I can get done in 20 minutes a day.

Boom, done, holy, get on with life.

But that call to say, how much of my life do I spend helping other people?

And it may not be that you got out, you know, did you help other people?

It doesn't mean you spent the week and you can tell me when you worked

for a charity that's recognized by the nonprofit status organization.

You know, nothing like that.

There may be people that you've reached out individually.

Who do we help in our lives?

And how much of our lives do we give to helping people not to get anything back,

not to get a repayment, not even to get to heaven?

I think, I've said this before, but I think it is the hardest part of our faith

to get into our subconscious mind,

which is Jesus did not come and go through all that suffering

so he could get to heaven.

He was there to begin with.

He didn't do that for himself.

Jesus isn't given a payoff.

And so we can't follow Jesus for the sake of our own payoff.

By doing that, we're not really following him.

But what we can do is form ourselves in the gospel.

And that's where this reading asks us to do something that we don't really quite get.

Now there are two phrases that come up in today's liturgy that I think

they're among my least favorite Christian bumper stickers.

One is from the first reading, God will provide.

I've always hated that.

Not because it's a lovely vision of God.

But it's really like saying, my family really, really likes.

I mean, they like what?

God will provide.

We don't know, just shut up.

There are people who pray and still starve to death.

There are people who are praying and are holy and they still can't find a job.

And they still feel alone in the world.

And they've never found the relationship they wanted.

So we ordain them.

What is it we think God will provide?

And all of a sudden, we get a little uneasy.

But if we can't articulate it, then we'll get something odd in our head,

and it will be disappointed.

God will not provide what we want always.

And we try to come up with reasons.

Well, it's because God knows what's good for us.

It's because that's not the promise.

There is a real sort of uber sense to what that means.

God will provide means everything that happens in my life is provided by God.

God is what keeps me breathing.

God is the spark of life.

You know, I've told you this year, you know, I've been struggling with these migraine headaches,

and they haven't been horrific, but they're there.

And when I wake up with a migraine, I have one of two choices.

I can either say, it's a migraine, where's God?

Or I woke up, there's God, with the migraine.

So, you know, I could want more.

Life is still not panned out exactly as it was supposed to in my mind,

could be very divisive if we can't figure out what it means is,

you know, those who believe in me, Jesus says, those who believe in me.

That is another one of those phrases that could mean about six different things.

You know, most people now think what it means is people in the world have heard the story of Jesus

and Buddha and Mohammed and Lao Tzu and all of these,

00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:25.000
and they have to pick the right story.

And if they pick the right story and say that's the true story, then they believe in Jesus.

Now, that's certainly not what my parents would have meant if they looked at me and said,

we want you to know we believe in you.

00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:41.000
That's not like, oh, so they know I exist.

No, now it means something terribly different.

If you have people in your life you believe in,

that you believe in the goodness of their message,

you believe that they can help the world,

you believe what it means.

I think when we start to say I believe in Jesus, we have to first say,

what do I really mean when I look at a person and say I believe in them?

I believe in the goodness of their heart and their mission.

And that we can get to a lot of just through scripture.

We can figure out Jesus was moving us towards that prophet vision.

He was moving us away from, there's a lot of stories where Jesus took religious rituals and went,

yeah, let's put those over here, let's get back to helping these people.

Over and over again, when he moves the, when he tells them to make water in the ritual,

00:12:29.000 --> 00:12:33.000
make wine, he makes wine out of the ritual water jars.

That would be like me doing a magic trick with the tabernacle.

Those were the ritual jars.

Now how's anyone going to wash their hands to come into the wedding feast?

He just took the ritual jars and made wine out of them and said, yeah, serve this.

You could, I mean, I can see people's head blowing up if that were a modern day religion.

But the welcome was more important than the ritual.

You know, there are moments constantly through the scripture where he will say, you know,

we weren't made to serve the Sabbath.

The Sabbath was made to serve humanity.

Go out and do the work.

So he keeps taking that tact.

So do we believe in that?

It's harder than believing in, well, I just do the ritualized stuff.

And then I get home with my life and I present myself to the world as someone who always goes to mass

and always does my prayers and all.

But we need to, if we believe in Jesus, we believe in the way of changing the world

is through that prophetic message.

And I think to be formed in the gospel is something we've had backwards for many years.

Because I think if you said, I'm going to be formed in the gospel

and then I'm going to go out and help the world, I think that's already backwards.

But what we will do is, well, I'll start with a study group, I will read the gospels,
