Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples, take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them, otherwise you will have no recompense from your Heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your almsgiving may be secret, and your Father who sees in secret may repay you. When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you. When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your Heavenly Father who is hidden, and your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. This gospel of the writer Matthew, there's clearly some huge conflict going on in their community. And these are most likely the words of the gospel writer rather than the words of Jesus. There's nothing going on in Jesus' group of followers that would constitute this much of what's really an over-the-top teaching. And of course, in the church, we're pretty shameless about it. You know, we get up every year and we read, you know, when you fast, wash your face so that no one knows you're fasting, and then we're gonna splash ashes right into the middle of that forehead so that everyone will know you're Catholic and fasting. And rather, I mean, I think it's good we don't sweep it under the table. We keep that reading and we put it right there, which can show you, in a sense, it's an organic progression that we arrived at that hypocrisy. It really wasn't when they started the ash tradition way back before Reformation or anything. And people would do it in towns where everyone was Catholic and no one was, you know, look at me, I'm Catholic. Of course not, because everyone was Catholic. And it was more, people looked at each other and remembered it was Lent. And all day long, it was there as a remembrance. And I mean, everyone thinks, well, like, really, you know, like you can't remember. And yet, most of us, you know, if you go to Mass in the morning, by 10 a.m., you can forget. Life gets busy. You know, today, you know, we get this reading in the second reading that just also feels very out of touch with where we are. You know, behold, now is the day of salvation. You know, I was, last night on the news, I saw the story of a man here in the neighborhood who shot his father and spent the afternoon, it turned out, a brother and son in that family is one of our parishioners, dealing now with the loss of his brother and his father. And dealing with, you can imagine the emotions. You know, your brother has snapped and so. And so I spent quite a while this afternoon, you know, talking with our parishioner and with some friends that came over to the rectory and we're talking about it and I finally get done and I go in and turn on the news and there's the school shooting. You know, the 18th, some are saying 17th, 18th school shooting of this year. Since, you know, since January 1st. And I watched this as a couple people kind of argued on air whether it was the 17th or 18th, as just one of those would be significantly less horrifying. 17th or 18th. And so when I hear this, today is the day of salvation, I'm thinking, no, not today, we're not there. We are not at the day of salvation. And I keep thinking, what would Lent be like if not just as a church, but as a larger community, as a culture, if we fasted from indifference? If we fasted from our indifference because most of us think if we watch it on TV and have an emotional reaction that we're not indifferent. But if our emotional reaction doesn't play out in an activity that helps to change the world, we are indifferent. We may be emotionally pulled, but we are still indifferent. And so I think what's happened as a culture, we've allowed ourselves to think that the experience of momentary horror watching television means we're not indifferent. But we are. I always think the heroes of the culture right now are those who are saying, you know what, I'm tired of complaining, I'm running for office. Those are the heroes nowadays. And they may make it, they may not. They may be good for us, they may be even worse. But they're motivated to say, you know what, I'm gonna put some skin in the game. That's what this transformation is supposed to be every year at Lent. That's why I said, you know, this is a little over the top. Matthew's gospel comes off as, you know, listen, if you're going to have a relationship with God, keep it under wraps, don't let anyone know. You know, if everything you do that's good, don't tell everyone. Well, what he's saying is don't run around trying to get credit for everything. But if you're taking a risk by letting people know, you know, who you are, what you think, what you feel, what needs to be changed, if that involves risk, do it loudly. That you do loudly. It's when, because what he's saying is it's when people were doing all the things that they could take credit for a little too loudly in the community, it was getting a little obnoxious, you know. Most people don't walk around beyond the age of maybe five trying to tell, say, did you see how great I was today? Most people grow out of that. We had, and it's almost sad in some ways. About three years ago, four years ago, maybe it was one of the choir picnics at my house in the summer. And you know, that sounds like a quaint little thing. It's a madhouse, there's, you know, look at the number. So they come and I know you wouldn't think this of choir people, but some of them are married and have spouses, so it's a big gathering. And in the kitchen was one of the kids of one of the choir members. She was five at the time. And she was kind of just dancing around. And Kathy McGovern looked at her and said, you're a wonderful dancer. And without thinking, she said, yes, I'm great at everything. And there was a part of me that wanted to think, wouldn't it be great if you could hang on to that? But not that we'd run around saying it, but that we really had enough confidence in ourselves to give up indifference and go into the world convinced we could make a difference. You know, either we're making a difference or we're indifferent. It has nothing to do with how we feel. And so I think, what a Lenten practice that would be. It's much easier to, well, I'm gonna give up chocolate, I'm gonna give up meat, you know. I look back at some of the really dumb things I've given up over the years, almost all of which lasted six weeks. I really am trying to think what I would have given up that would have really, that I never went back to, you know. I gave up guilt one year. I almost left the church the next year. Turned out that was all that was holding me in. But I grew out of it, I grew out of it, you know. But to give up indifference and to make the six weeks of Lent training for who we need to be the rest of our lives, to look around and say, you know, it's time. It's time that if I'm not putting skin in the game and making a difference, that I know that's probably my greatest sin, is just sort of indifference. An ineffective horror that I'm willing to feel once in a while before I get back to the Olympics or prime time or something that's more pleasant to watch. You know, I actually had someone tweet today that, you know, and I understood what they were saying. They keep showing this scene over and over, breaking news, and they keep showing the same scene for two hours. But what I was fascinated with was whether it was, this is graphic and this shouldn't be happening, or whether, you know, I was willing to miss 15 minutes of television for this. But just because it's a national tragedy doesn't mean it should interrupt my entire programming for the afternoon. You know, that's scandalous indifference. But all of us are guilty at some level. Unless we can look and see what we're doing to make a difference in the world. And so I think as we start Lent, to say, you know, boy, you know, for a country that has as much as we do, we sure are comfortable with poverty. You know, we sure are comfortable with violence. We are comfortable with racism. We are comfortable with sexism. And we can say to ourselves, oh, well, I don't participate, you know. I remember people used to say, oh, you know, I have Jewish friends. Now they're comfortable having racist friends. And I think we have to get beyond that. I think we have to decide, we're gonna make the difference. Because otherwise, Lent means very little. You know, it just means you're gonna lose a few pounds or get up a little earlier, or it's gonna be a nice, you know, what a nice little spiritual experience. And the kingdom of God is still different. But if we give up indifference for Lent, then that second reading will hit home.
