On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked where the disciples were, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, peace be with you. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. And the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them. Whose sins you retain are retained. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Pentecost is probably the single solemnity of the church that really has us focus on the first reading rather than the Gospel. The first reading is the Pentecost reading. And we get this sort of what some theologians have called a little Pentecost. That's sort of the day after Easter. Our Gospel reading is actually the same reading we have every year on the Sunday after Easter. We've kind of looped back around to the beginning of the season. And they're both readings about the coming of the Spirit. And it's probably, given the nature of the words involved, it is literally the most nebulous idea we have. What the Spirit came, what it looked like. We get some pretty fanciful visions drawn. But more than that, and I know I speak about this a lot, but 2,000 years of Christian history in our eyes, we often can't read the text anymore without hearing things that aren't there, that we've been told are there. For example, I think because of the way Christianity developed in 2,000 years, most of us hear the phrase, whose sins you forgive are forgiven them and whose sins you retain are retained. And the 2,000 years of history immediately filter that, reread it, and say, if you don't forgive someone's sins, God will back you up and not forgive them as well. That is a huge jump from what the text says. You know, if you won't forgive sins, then they're not forgiven. It doesn't mean God won't forgive them, it means you're gonna hold those sins unforgiven. You guys wanna just hold things against each other, you can. You wanna let go of sins, they'll be released. And that was the big news, because people knew they could hold sins against one another, but you hear in the stories of Jesus, who are you to forgive, you can't forgive sins. The breakthrough here was, yes, you can forgive one another. Let things go. You know, what if, worst possible case scenario, what if we all get to heaven? All right. Now I have to get along with you. I mean, what would that be like? Do we ever think that way? You know, what if you could walk into heaven tomorrow if you're ready to embrace whoever else happened to get there? And you don't get to use the good old stock answer, which is, well, it's all right. I'm sure Uncle Samuel won't be there anyway. I'm sure they won't, well, those people won't be there anyway. Worst case scenario, what if everyone gets in? Still wanna go? Because in Jesus' message, you see the underlying issue is, it's when everyone gets in that it really becomes worthwhile. Very different from our belief, because most people, we kind of have the country club belief. But it's not going to be a little exclusive. What really is the point? That's our culture, not our faith. It's so hard for us to get there. And so we get this moment in Pentecost, and I always love in these miracle moments to try and figure out how people visualize the miracle. You know, with the multiplication of the bread. Do they picture a basket that just keeps bubbling out bread? Do they picture people starting to share what they've had with them all along, and it being enough? How do you picture the miracle? Here, is the miracle more something where the speakers were transformed, or the listeners? Because I think Pentecost is about the listeners. I think it's where we learn as a faith to evangelize with our ears, rather than our lips. And that's a very sort of counterintuitive idea. Rarely do we evangelize with our ears. Ready to hear the other person's story, encounter the God that has already been there in their lives, then share the gospel, and see what happens in that dialogue. We think that evangelization is, I show up with a Bible in one hand, and the catechism in the other, and by the time you leave me, you will know that a sacrament is an outward sign of an inward grace, and the sign is effective, and you know, that's not evangelization. If someone walks away with an identical set of ideas, I don't know that they've been evangelized. But when we open our ears and start to hear each other, so without, you know, totally dismissing the Comic-Con crowd who love to think that this was, you know, the first universal translator from Star Trek. They spoke out, and the Klingons heard what was being said. No, there's a line in here that kind of clues us in to what was really going on, and it says, now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. Take it with a grain of salt that is written with the mindset of the day. I don't think Fiji was represented. So when it says every nation under heaven, you know, we're probably talking about a tract of land that might be Colorado and Wyoming. You know, they have a very small vision of what every nation is, but when it says devout Jews, and here's where Catholics kind of can understand this if you think back historically. It would rather be like saying in the 1930s that groups from Catholics from every nation gathered, and they said mass in Latin, and they all magically understood. It was the only mass they knew. Hebrew and Aramaic and Greek, and Hebrew to Aramaic, if you look at Hebrew and Greek, Aramaic is Spanglish. It was the mix between the two. All of these Jews of the Diaspora, and then the Jews in Galilee, you know, between about one or two languages, they all knew the same language, because as devout Jews, they studied scripture, which only existed in two languages, you know. They studied, you know, they studied or went to temples, or if they didn't live close enough to the temple, they had gatherings, they discussed religion. It was the language of their cult, their worship. And so it's not that they couldn't understand each other if they wanted to really lean in, listen, and work at it. It's that the groups didn't like each other. The Jews of the Diaspora, when I say the Diaspora, those were those who were exiled at one point, some under Babylonian rule, others under Assyrian rule. Whenever they became an occupied nation, they would often take the leaders and exile them, get them out. And what would happen, as ugly as it sounds, is those who were lucky enough to not be exiled would slowly sit in judgment over the ones who were, because they would end up in another country and they would mix with the locals. And all of a sudden, their faith might start to pick up some, you know, extra things that were not pure. You know, like when we picked up genuflecting from the Greek. Most of you have become comfortable with it by now. But back then, there was an impurity in the faith. So you had these people, there was a lot of animosity. And the gift of Pentecost is not that all of a sudden, they spoke the same phonetic cultural language, but that they were willing, perhaps, to use what they already had and begin to listen to one another. And in the listening comes understanding. Our school is starting, I've been talking about this for a few weeks, and you'll get real irritated with this by fall. But we're starting this program, this leadership program. You know, a lot of the schools now, you have STEM schools and schools of the arts. And the school here, we're going to use one of these leadership programs. And it's not, you know, when someone says, oh, a Catholic leadership school, there's two reactions to that. For some people, they're thinking, oh, good, what they're trying to do is get, as long as, if we had more Catholics in leadership, the world would be a better place. As soon as we control the world, and that's not what it's about. Because, you know, power over others, we've talked about that, that's political. But what Catholic leadership would look like, what Christian leadership should look like, is servant leadership. So, I'm starting to rewrite the leadership report. Colleen just got the brochures done. She's very happy with me changing things. And I said, you know, what if, instead, we call this a servant leadership program? We're a servant leadership school. And what I would love to focus our children on, because I think if they get it at a foundational level, they'll have a different approach to life than most of us do. And we will, we work on it as adults, but it's never as foundational. And that is, most of us grew up hearing a pretty common question in our preteens and our adolescent years, and that is, what do you want to be when you grow up? Not a bad question, and we start asking children pretty early and getting them to dream, what do you want to be when you grow up? But I think servant leadership asks, whom do you want to help when you grow up? Who would you like to see helped? Not, I want to be a doctor, but I really feel called to help people who are sick. Not, I want to be a lawyer, I feel called to help people who are fighting injustice. Who do we want to help in the world? Because that's the underlying question, and that will take the evangelization of our ears. We have to start to listen to the needs around us. We have to get beyond our parish and our church and our city and our nation, and we have to really fight these, around the world, these movements that are saying, let's shut down globalization. Let's start just to worry about the people close to us. But let's face it, probably the Germans aren't getting into heaven anyway, let's not worry about them. I'm only saying that because I'm going to Germany soon, so I thought I had to pick a country. I mean, it really, I think we often do that. I think we don't have to worry about that. We just take care of us and ours, and we're doing our job in the world, but it's not the Christian call. The Christian call is, how many people are we going to help? If the church is going to be great in leadership, it has to be great in servanthood. It has to be a servant leader. And so, that's our new question, I think, that we should focus on is, who do we want to help in life? And how does that drive our vocation? Every year around Pentecost, I'm always very mindful of Monsignor Peter Quang. If you don't know him, he's the pastor over at All Saints, and he started life, I mean, it was difficult. He and his siblings were orphaned on the streets of Vietnam, and he literally raised and kept his siblings together on the streets over there, and came over here in the bottom of a boat, stowed away as a young child, you know, has since put together a life here. And he has such a different upbringing from us, and one time we were in discussion around a table, it was a lead discussion, and a bunch of priests who were sitting around, and there were six of us at our table, and we were supposed to be saying, you know, how did you discern your vocation? How did you come to believe that this is what you should do? And we, of course, all of us, immediately became professional therapists. And we talked about the deep movements of our hearts, and where we felt we might find fulfillment, and with the Catholic priesthood, you know, the celibacy issue, and, you know, will you be able, will that be okay for you, and how will you, you know, are you okay with this aspect of ministry? And we did all this discernment talk as we went around the table, and Peter, Monsignor Quang was the last one, and he was listening just fascinated, and so we finally got to him and said, so Peter, what made you want to become a priest? And he, not being smart or anything, he just said, my village needed priests. We had spent 35 minutes talking about, you know, whether it would be a fulfilling thing for our heart, and would it fill, we just, we knew that God would put a joy in my heart, and what it was gonna do to fulfill my life, and he grew up with ears that said they needed a priest. And people can believe what they want about vocations and calls, but I truly believe if they'd had a priest and needed a doctor, he'd have become a doctor, and it would have still been his vocation, because he listened to the need around him, and I just remember how that changed my thinking about discernment, certainly as a pastor. You know, there's, at any moment, there's at least 20 things on the table of people who are dealing with death in their family, and people who are dealing with interpersonal struggles, and people who are dealing with serious illnesses, and losses of homes, and all, and you want each one of those to be important, and of course, each one of those wants you to forget the other 19, but it's, you know, you have to be called by the needs of the community, and we all have to be called by the needs of the greater community. We don't always get to hear the story of what happened to all those people who heard, who listened, who moved beyond their petty prejudices, and listened to people that formerly they'd had some tensions with, and in the listening, they become one. Now, I don't think they all walked out agreeing on everything. Agreement is not the same as support, and love, and nurture. They went out ready to be one, and that comes from support and nurture, and I think we are called in Pentecost to the evangelization that we can do with our ears, to go out and listen to the world, to hear about the God that was there long before us. You know, I'm fond of saying there's never been a missionary that brought Christ to anyone. Believe it or not, Christ got there first, and a real missionary listens until he or she can hear the God that was already there, and once they're there, then they can start to share, then evangelization happens. That's the miracle. Universal translator, we'll let the technicians take care of that, but no one will come up with a technology program that will create understanding.
