Glory to you, O Lord. When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, Where is the newborn King of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophets, And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, since from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod called the Magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word that I too may go and do him homage. After their audience with the king, they set out, and behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The Feast of the Nativity. For most of us, this feast is kind of just melted into Christmas. I mean, I realize it's simply because we need, you know, a cast of characters, but no one ever has a nativity scene without the three kings. The interesting thing is, of course, the three kings are never mentioned here. Almost, I mean, the word kings is not used, or the word three, but other than that, the three kings are right there in the reading. It's one of those great moments where the translators realized there is no translation for this word, let's not try to make one up. I wish they were that, you know, sort of careful all the time. Magi just doesn't translate. Translating magi into king is a little bit would be like translating burrito into sandwich. You know, we could have. We could have said, oh yeah, that's that sandwich thing, but we realize it's not really the same thing. Just keep the word. You know, if they'd waited a little while, you know, they'd be serving wraps. You know, not quite the same thing. So sometimes a word just doesn't translate out of a particular culture. We don't really know exactly who they were. When you talk about a king in that age, you're often talking about the leader of an extended family, but it also has this hint of someone who is thought to be a sage or a wise person, and all we know is that this group of magi offer gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and someone long ago decided, okay, so we've got to represent one of the magi holding gold, one holding frankincense, one holding myrrh, and so they came up with three. You know, it could be a small tribe of magi who happen to have three kinds of gifts. You know, there were years where I only received perhaps three presents from my family. Would that that meant there were only three? You know, it could be, you know, just because the gift is duplicated. So we kind of have this image when people say, oh, the three kings. There's no story about that. There is this group of magi, and there are three gifts mentioned. The way it goes, probably one of them brought all three. You know, who knows? It says nothing about it. What we do know is from the difference between that and this vision of Isaiah that Matthew bases this story on, he drops something in the story. In the vision of Isaiah, in this reading from Isaiah, it says, you know, they will come, and they will be bearing gold and frankincense, gold which acknowledges that Jesus is a king. This was the gift for kings, and it's, you know, a code. When it says, oh, they bring him gold, you bring gold to the king. So it's pronouncing it as king, and frankincense, which literally is frankish incense, incense from the north, and it was used in the cultic worship of the day. So one of them is not acknowledging Jesus' office as a king, and one, his office, his status as a priest, because we're looking at a priestly people, and the people who would lead a priestly people were often priests and the kings, and there's always tension between the Levitican priesthood and the kings of old days, and there's all this tension, and Jesus is going to be both. He's bringing two sides together, but then he drops in the myrrh. The myrrh is not in the original vision, and it's the piece that, in the day this writer is writing the gospel, they're still struggling with, and that is myrrh is a funeral spice. Showing up, you know, with myrrh at this moment would be as risky a gift as, you know, the crazy aunt or uncle showing up at baptism and saying, we pre-purchased their plot to be buried in one day. Here. You'd be like, oh, every family has one. But that's what they're doing. They're showing up at the birth of the baby with one of the spices for the funeral. So this child is not just going to bring together the ideas of what is politically kingly and religiously priestly, but in a very real sense, he's come to give his life and come to die for that. This is the new piece that gets added in, and it's the piece that the early church is still struggling with, is that Jesus had to die. So we get this, really, we don't see it because, you know, when we hear gold, frankincense, and myrrh, that last thing to us says, oh good, we can cast one more child in the pageant. Oh good. They won't know what myrrh looks like anyway. That's what we hear. When the people of the day heard this, someone just dropped something foreboding and ominous into the pretty little story. You know, something has been placed into the story that tells us this is not going to be all, you know, ponies and rainbows sort of story. This has got some darkness in it, and Jesus is going to go through death. And more importantly in this whole story, we get this vision of the magi. Those, Jesus is going to be, you know, revealed to the nations. The idea that the magi are not of the in-group. Jesus spends the nativity appearing to all the wrong people. That's what the religious people of the day would have thought. I mean, you know, first there's this whole idea of the shepherds. The shepherds being the first witnesses to Jesus' birth. For you and I, that seems very, you know, lovely and sort of quaint. And again, to them, that's very edgy and revolutionary. Because the shepherds were the religiously shunned. They were the people, number one, most shepherds, because they lived with their flock, they did not get to temple and to synagogue regularly. You do not live out among the sheep and keep all of the kosher stuff going. They were the people that didn't live religious expectations. They're probably the same people today that we would say, well they shouldn't come to communion. Those are the shepherds. And that's the first people that Jesus is revealed to. And then it skips right over and says, now it would be Jesus coming today and first he goes to all the people who we say can't receive communion. And then we're like, well maybe we'll be next. And then he goes out to the Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists next. And we're waiting. Because we always want to think that we're the most important. You know, it's not does the world encounter God, but does the world encounter God the way I think they should? Does the infinite God that none of us can understand, do they go to the God that I look like? Do they go to the God that looks like I think God should? And here, it's all sort of bypassed. The nativity story starts with God being out of our control. You know, that's the great comedy of all scripture. It's really the story of us trying to control a God that's never been under our control. We can't have God under our control. And so, God is going out ahead of us. It's one of the first rules of missionary work, is nothing is harder than to get especially young, excited missionaries to know that they're not going to go to the world, they're not going to bring Christ to the world. Even though you'll hear that, this is your chance to bring Christ to the world. And anyone with a sense of it realizes that Christ got there before us. That we didn't bring Christ anywhere. If you're smart, you spend your first months in any mission encountering the Christ who got there ahead of you. And then starting to work it in with different images and newness of what you bring to the picture. And so, this is that great story of Jesus is revealed to the nations. And in the context of the story, it's very interesting. Jesus is revealed to the nations long before he's revealed to the in crowd. And so, we have this, where the magi are the heroes of this little section of the story. They're heroes for reasons we don't like to admit. They're heroes because they wandered out of their own stodgy old ideas of culture and religion and politics. They wandered out into the world and encountered God in another culture. And I think we've taken that story and said, and what that means is we should sit still and wait for the world to come and encounter us. But that's not the example of the magi. The magi says, you know, you've got great images of God. When was the last time you, you know, picked up your feet of clay and moved them a little and encountered a new vision of God? There is no vision of God we gave any of you in your sacramental prep when you were kids. There is no vision of God that we gave you at that age that will still help you when you're 20. There is no vision of God you understood at the age of 20 that will help you when you're 30. There is no vision of God you can comprehend at 30 that will still help you. If your vision of God isn't continuing to grow, what we often do as a people of faith is say, if I can't get my vision of God to grow, I will stunt my spiritual growth so that the old vision still works. Those are our choices. Either the vision of God grows or we have to stay stunted. When was the last time we started to realize that, you know, Cardinal Stafford used to always say, if you think you understand it, you've chosen something smaller than God. If you think you can understand it, you chose something smaller. So when was the last time we wandered out of the most comfortable corners of our culture or our faith or our politics and encountered God in the other? That's what the Magi do. They encounter God in something truly different, truly other. They challenge themselves to move beyond what's comfortable. It's the story of the epiphany. You know, the whole story has things in it that should make us run screaming from the room. I mean, if we took this story literally, I would think that the first class taught in any seminary would be astrology. I mean, how did they know Jesus was there? Because they knew how to read the stars. Now, do you think there's a Christian theologian that really is going to embrace that nowadays? That, oh, well, they knew how to look at the stars and because they knew how to look at the stars, they knew Jesus was coming. Folks, go read your horoscope. No, no, that's not a literal story. But it's telling you that these people from a faith that you and I don't believe in, who employ religious ideas that you and I will never embrace, are still able to find God. They find God through a method that you and I would completely debunk. And that's our epiphany story. What do we do with that? How do we look at faiths where we go, well, we don't believe that part of that faith, and yet God will get to them even though their faith can't do it on their own. God will get to them. What we learn from that is, and that's how God got to us. God didn't get to us because we were intellectually superior and figured it out. God gets to us through the flaws of our religion just like he gets to everyone through the flaws of theirs. With God, all things are possible. Give us a great dose of that humility that allows us to change our vision of God, to admit that the vision that has helped me thus far can still have some good things in it, but if my vision of God hasn't changed in the last 20 years, it's probably because I have not spiritually grown in the last 20 years. If nothing has changed, it's not that I'm just the first person who happened to figure God out at the age of 19. That's not it, which means I have ceased to grow. If our vision of God does not grow, it is because we are stagnant. And so we ask God today to kind of knit us and join us to the magi, to those who journey, even when they think they've found God, continue the journey because God will always be greater than our visions of God. I'm always, I want to leave you with, it's my favorite vision in the world of this, came from Houston Smith, who was the great interfaith dialoguer of about a generation ago, and Houston Smith used to always say, if you take everything you know about God and visualize it as a planet, I mean as an island on a planet completely of water, maybe an island about the size of Maui, might as well make it a nice island, Maui in the midst of a planet that is ocean, and everything you and everyone else has ever known about God is that planet, and all of the unknowable parts of God are the ocean. He said where mystery lies, where our religion finds its heart is at the shore. At that point where everything we know kind of touches the mystery, the parts we can't know, that's mystery. It's where we can just get our toe in the water of what's not known yet. And he said what you'll find very quickly is the reason we keep exploring God and exploring God and exploring God is not to figure it out, but because the larger the island of knowledge gets, the longer the shoreline of mystery. The more we know, the more we'll realize we just don't have God figured out. And we know that we're growing, not when we find answers, but when we find new questions. The larger the island of knowledge, the longer the shoreline of mystery.
