The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving, and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. The Gospel of the Lord. Well in some ways today's gospel is every pastor's worst nightmare. You know, you need some time to yourself. You've had it up to here, you're ready for burnout, you get away and you show up at a nice secluded place and the parish is there. So that's kind of what it sounds like. And yet there's this moment where, you know, Jesus has the decision to do one of the two pastoral responses, either to scream at the top of his lungs, It's my day off. Or recognize the needs in front of him. I think all of us have vocations, hopefully in life, and sometimes they coincide with your careers, and sometimes your vocation and your career are very much different. Sometimes they even collide. But the idea of a vocation usually means it's what's being called from you. It's not what you decide to do. This happens in churches all the time. It can be any ministry. It can be something from a volunteer position that works with the poor to someone who reads at church to anything where someone goes, this is my ministry and I have a right to it. No, no, the needs are called forth by the community. And it's not that this is mine and I have a right to it. No, it's that if the community has the need, you can fulfill that need. But I think sometimes people go through life thinking, well, this is my gift and they will need it whether they like it or not. And that just doesn't work. And so we get this where Jesus today at that moment, I've no doubt he would have preferred, he says, don't come away and rest. It was the first, it was the beginning of the self-care movement and it didn't work. People showed up. And so he kind of rolls up his sleeves and responds to the needs around him. What the question we have to deal with before we can pull that into the other two readings is when we hit that point, what is it in life that exhausts us? Not what taxes us, not what asks for energy, life, all of life, every relationship you have will ask for some energy from you. It always takes some effort. Any energy that doesn't, I mean, any relationship that doesn't inconvenience you once in a while is not a relationship. It's a delusion. You've just projected yourself onto another person. If you're really in relationship, it will inconvenience you. Their needs will not keep sync with your energy. There will be days you have no energy and they need it all. And that will just happen once in a while. For those of you that don't believe it, have children. I guarantee you their energy will kick in about the moment yours is going down the hill at night. They won't be in sync with you. No one is. And I think we forget that. I think that there are people who themselves will admit that between the ages of 18 and 35, maybe their faith was not as important to them. And something happens. Often it's their own children, having children. All of a sudden they go through a conversion and their faith becomes important to them and they cannot believe that the world has not converted at the same moment. Ten years down the road, they can't believe that their children, who are 18, aren't going to church. You know, because they had that moment, they're here now. Why did the world not keep pace with them? You know, we all do that. We can't figure out why the world doesn't keep pace with us. And that's exhausting. That goes beyond taxing. Certainly, beyond simple things like that, we get into global politics and economics and all of these opinions where we have become a society that no longer knows how to disagree with one another. I mean, I keep wondering when, and we can call it left or right. We can call it Democrat, Republican. We can call it conservative, liberal, whatever it is. Do you ever think we'll finally get exhausted hating each other? Do you think the amount of hate that we throw out towards one another, we'll ever just get tired of it and be okay? Not. Well, if we don't want to hate each other, you know, I always hear people, we've got to compromise. Like, if we could all just get to the middle and think alike, that will never happen. What we have to learn is we will never agree and we don't have to hate each other. We actually have to include each other. I mean, I have a family with whom I have not agreed with anything since the day I was born. My mother swears I was born with a pamphlet in my hand trying to lower the fetal rate to five months just to have something to argue about. You know, it doesn't mean we, and to this day, we actually all get along. It's interesting when family said, you know, after that last election, you know, I can't talk to them anymore. I was always like, you mean before that you agreed on everything? No, but it was minor enough that I could delude myself. Now they were big issues. I could no longer hang on the delusion that we agreed. Rather than, we weren't called to agree. If God called humanity to be in perfect agreement, he should have stopped at Adam. Not because of Eve, don't go there. Because of all of the rest of creation. Shouldn't have made the animals, shouldn't have made Eve, shouldn't have made other people. And let's face it, if you read that story, there are other people in the story that have nothing to do with Adam and Eve. Where did they come from? Leave them all. We have Adam and no one will fight. No one will be upset with one another. Everyone will think the same. It will just be Adam. That was not God's vision for creation. Union and unity are not the same thing. Unity is everyone's the same. Union means different things come together. Not different things become the same, different things come together. So Jesus has this moment where he's got to figure out, just like everyone else, what is it that's exhausting me? What is it that's just taxing me? And he looks at all these people who aren't in sync with him because they're wanting a day of teaching. They're needing something and he's wanting peace and quiet. So they're out of sync with him and he adjusts. In the opening reading we hear that, you know, there's this condemnation of those who scatter. How do we scatter people? We scatter by dividing up and saying, if you don't agree with me, get out. If you don't agree, go over there. We're going to divide. Nowadays we're putting it, and I think it's just lovely, pretty language now. You see, especially politically in the United States, they talk about everyone because of the internet. They're just in their own bubble. They're in their own bubble. It's so pretty. It sounds like little kids playing with soap bubbles. It's so much nicer than saying no one knows how to handle anyone that doesn't think the way they do. You know, we just, nope, just stay in my bubble and I will pretend that most of the world agrees with me and there's not a bunch of different opinions out there. And we think, and all we do is we scatter. Exclusivity in the church, you know, through the Middle Ages, scattering that we hear in the Old Testament became excommunicating people. If that isn't scattering the flock, what is? You know, that's, that is the wrong approach. The wrong approach is to say, you know, if someone here disagrees with me, all I have to do is get them out of the parish and my workload is lightened that much anyway. If I can get enough of you to disagree with me, they'll be parking at Christmas. Get them out. You know, it lightens your workload. It lightens that effort in life if I can just ignore anyone that doesn't keep sync with my journey. But it's not what we're called to do. Even Paul says today in his letter to the Ephesians that Jesus came and he did two things. One we get, the other we pretend we get but we don't get, which is he says, to those of you that are near, and he's not talking geographically, he's talking philosophically and religiously and theologically, to those of you who are near, peace. To those of you who are not near, he preached peace. This is why Pope Francis has said, get rid of the culture wars. Quit investing in the culture wars, which are, to those who are with us, we say peace. To those who disagree, we say war. It's not what the scripture says. Scripture says, to those who disagree with us, peace. It's okay to disagree. I think the reason we get exhausted is because we are so in the habit of getting into the language, we hear the rhetoric nowadays, the public displays of just hateful language that have become normative. And we kind of think, oh, when we disagree with people, we hate them. And therefore, if we disagree with them, they will hate us and we don't want to be hated. So then we start to kind of not be who we really are so that we can be liked rather than be who we are and disagreed with. We just don't trust that process to be who we truly are. And some will disagree with us, but they don't have to hate us unless we believe too in that model that disagreement and hating one another is the same thing. I think most of us have had the experience. I mentioned last week, and I got some very interesting comments from people, which is why I don't mind mentioning it again, that I do believe there are a lot of married couples who love one another, even though God put them on earth to cancel out each other's vote. And they do it so consistently. And that doesn't mean that one of them doesn't love the other. It means they disagree. You know, when one person says, oh, I worry about the salvation of the soul of my spouse because I don't know, they belong to another faith or they're in a different spot in their journey. The problem with that is they've got all these reasons that this is what they have to do to be saved. I mean, unless they really think their spouse is a bad person, oh, no, they're a good person. I just want them saved. Are you worried God doesn't see that they're a good person? Are you worried that God has things that are more important to him than them being a good person? And so they don't understand every time they're like, I'm concerned for the salvation. What they're saying is at some level, I think when God takes a good look, they ain't getting in. That's a little insulting. I can see that, you know, because they've got a system that needs to be met rather than the goodness of the person speaking to God about who they are. And so we ask God today to help us to start to see with that wider lens that says we disagree and we're not going to agree. We're not always going to agree. There are some people in your life you'll never agree with. And if that is the basis for your ability to love, your ability to love is extremely compromised because I've always contended, especially in families that with couples, you don't even have a chance to be in love until you're disagreeing. Coming up to that moment is romance. And all of a sudden you look over and go, oh, I've fallen in love with another person and other person. We're not, we don't have this in common. Now you have the chance to love. I always, I hate, I hate to disagree with the great theologians of our days like Whitney Houston, but love of myself is not the greatest love of all. Love of another, it's of another person. And so we have to come together and say, you know, we have to somehow celebrate the fact that God has decided to create plurality in the world. That we come together in love, not in agreement always. And that we start to look across the divide and say, I disagree, I don't hate, I disagree. And if someone chooses to hate you back, you can disagree with that too. But we don't have to hate. That will exhaust us. That will take an energy that will no longer allow us to be ourselves. You know, it finally hit me that when my family comes for holidays, I don't dread my family coming. I dread the fact that sometimes the real me will take a hike and I'll kind of be the peacemaker. You know, because if we disagree, what if we hate each other? Because we've been taught that. Rather than be exactly who you are, let them be exactly who they are, and now you have a chance to love, to love another. If we can get that in our faith, if we can get that in our country, if we can find that in our families, we move towards healing. We actually have the energy to build the kingdom of God. Otherwise, we will continue to find ourselves exhausted by hate.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 10.15999984741211, "text": " The Lord be with you.", "tokens": [50364, 440, WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.159 The Lord be with you. 00:00:10.159 --> 00:00:17.000 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:21.360 The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. 00:00:21.360 --> 00:00:26.559 He said to them, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. 00:00:26.559 --> 00:00:31.360 People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. 00:00:31.360 --> 00:00:35.540 So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. 00:00:35.540 --> 00:00:38.259 People saw them leaving, and many came to know about it. 00:00:38.259 --> 00:00:43.340 They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. 00:00:43.340 --> 00:00:48.060 When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for 00:00:48.060 --> 00:00:50.459 they were like sheep without a shepherd. 00:00:50.459 --> 00:00:54.060 And he began to teach them many things. 00:00:54.060 --> 00:01:05.599 The Gospel of the Lord. 00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:11.559 Well in some ways today's gospel is every pastor's worst nightmare. 00:01:11.559 --> 00:01:16.339 You know, you need some time to yourself. 00:01:16.339 --> 00:01:20.699 You've had it up to here, you're ready for burnout, you get away and you show up at a 00:01:20.699 --> 00:01:24.360 nice secluded place and the parish is there. 00:01:24.360 --> 00:01:27.120 So that's kind of what it sounds like. 00:01:27.120 --> 00:01:33.419 And yet there's this moment where, you know, Jesus has the decision to do one of the two 00:01:33.419 --> 00:01:40.800 pastoral responses, either to scream at the top of his lungs, It's my day off. 00:01:40.800 --> 00:01:43.279 Or recognize the needs in front of him. 00:01:43.279 --> 00:01:49.919 I think all of us have vocations, hopefully in life, and sometimes they coincide with 00:01:50.139 --> 00:01:54.540 your careers, and sometimes your vocation and your career are very much different. 00:01:54.540 --> 00:01:55.900 Sometimes they even collide. 00:01:55.900 --> 00:02:03.339 But the idea of a vocation usually means it's what's being called from you. 00:02:03.339 --> 00:02:05.720 It's not what you decide to do. 00:02:05.720 --> 00:02:08.740 This happens in churches all the time. 00:02:08.740 --> 00:02:10.619 It can be any ministry. 00:02:10.619 --> 00:02:15.860 It can be something from a volunteer position that works with the poor to someone who reads 00:02:15.860 --> 00:02:20.360 at church to anything where someone goes, this is my ministry and I have a right to 00:02:20.360 --> 00:02:21.360 it. 00:02:21.360 --> 00:02:25.880 No, no, the needs are called forth by the community. 00:02:25.880 --> 00:02:28.839 And it's not that this is mine and I have a right to it. 00:02:28.839 --> 00:02:33.360 No, it's that if the community has the need, you can fulfill that need. 00:02:33.360 --> 00:02:37.800 But I think sometimes people go through life thinking, well, this is my gift and they will 00:02:37.800 --> 00:02:40.899 need it whether they like it or not. 00:02:40.899 --> 00:02:42.800 And that just doesn't work. 00:02:42.800 --> 00:02:48.820 And so we get this where Jesus today at that moment, I've no doubt he would have preferred, 00:02:48.820 --> 00:02:51.199 he says, don't come away and rest. 00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:57.860 It was the first, it was the beginning of the self-care movement and it didn't work. 00:02:57.860 --> 00:02:58.860 People showed up. 00:02:58.860 --> 00:03:04.979 And so he kind of rolls up his sleeves and responds to the needs around him. 00:03:04.979 --> 00:03:09.479 What the question we have to deal with before we can pull that into the other two readings 00:03:09.479 --> 00:03:15.699 is when we hit that point, what is it in life that exhausts us? 00:03:15.699 --> 00:03:20.500 Not what taxes us, not what asks for energy, life, all of life, every relationship you 00:03:20.500 --> 00:03:25.259 have will ask for some energy from you. 00:03:25.259 --> 00:03:27.619 It always takes some effort. 00:03:27.619 --> 00:03:33.720 Any energy that doesn't, I mean, any relationship that doesn't inconvenience you once in a while 00:03:33.720 --> 00:03:36.419 is not a relationship. 00:03:36.419 --> 00:03:37.419 It's a delusion. 00:03:37.419 --> 00:03:40.559 You've just projected yourself onto another person. 00:03:40.559 --> 00:03:44.279 If you're really in relationship, it will inconvenience you. 00:03:44.279 --> 00:03:50.179 Their needs will not keep sync with your energy. 00:03:50.179 --> 00:03:54.559 There will be days you have no energy and they need it all. 00:03:54.559 --> 00:03:57.279 And that will just happen once in a while. 00:03:57.279 --> 00:04:01.839 For those of you that don't believe it, have children. 00:04:01.839 --> 00:04:07.660 I guarantee you their energy will kick in about the moment yours is going down the hill 00:04:07.660 --> 00:04:10.220 at night. 00:04:10.220 --> 00:04:12.259 They won't be in sync with you. 00:04:12.259 --> 00:04:13.919 No one is. 00:04:13.919 --> 00:04:15.500 And I think we forget that. 00:04:15.500 --> 00:04:21.739 I think that there are people who themselves will admit that between the ages of 18 and 00:04:21.739 --> 00:04:26.359 35, maybe their faith was not as important to them. 00:04:26.359 --> 00:04:27.359 And something happens. 00:04:27.359 --> 00:04:29.540 Often it's their own children, having children. 00:04:29.959 --> 00:04:34.839 All of a sudden they go through a conversion and their faith becomes important to them 00:04:34.839 --> 00:04:41.480 and they cannot believe that the world has not converted at the same moment. 00:04:41.480 --> 00:04:46.119 Ten years down the road, they can't believe that their children, who are 18, aren't going 00:04:46.119 --> 00:04:48.600 to church. 00:04:48.600 --> 00:04:51.880 You know, because they had that moment, they're here now. 00:04:51.880 --> 00:04:55.559 Why did the world not keep pace with them? 00:04:55.559 --> 00:04:57.720 You know, we all do that. 00:04:57.720 --> 00:05:02.220 We can't figure out why the world doesn't keep pace with us. 00:05:02.220 --> 00:05:03.459 And that's exhausting. 00:05:03.459 --> 00:05:05.660 That goes beyond taxing. 00:05:05.660 --> 00:05:13.859 Certainly, beyond simple things like that, we get into global politics and economics 00:05:13.859 --> 00:05:19.500 and all of these opinions where we have become a society that no longer knows how to disagree 00:05:19.500 --> 00:05:20.500 with one another. 00:05:20.500 --> 00:05:23.579 I mean, I keep wondering when, and we can call it left or right. 00:05:23.579 --> 00:05:25.260 We can call it Democrat, Republican. 00:05:25.260 --> 00:05:27.480 We can call it conservative, liberal, whatever it is. 00:05:27.480 --> 00:05:33.440 Do you ever think we'll finally get exhausted hating each other? 00:05:33.440 --> 00:05:38.239 Do you think the amount of hate that we throw out towards one another, we'll ever just get 00:05:38.239 --> 00:05:41.079 tired of it and be okay? 00:05:41.079 --> 00:05:42.079 Not. 00:05:42.079 --> 00:05:45.440 Well, if we don't want to hate each other, you know, I always hear people, we've got 00:05:45.440 --> 00:05:46.440 to compromise. 00:05:46.440 --> 00:05:52.739 Like, if we could all just get to the middle and think alike, that will never happen. 00:05:52.739 --> 00:05:58.920 What we have to learn is we will never agree and we don't have to hate each other. 00:05:58.920 --> 00:06:00.640 We actually have to include each other. 00:06:00.640 --> 00:06:08.519 I mean, I have a family with whom I have not agreed with anything since the day I was born. 00:06:08.519 --> 00:06:12.679 My mother swears I was born with a pamphlet in my hand trying to lower the fetal rate 00:06:12.679 --> 00:06:16.119 to five months just to have something to argue about. 00:06:16.119 --> 00:06:22.399 You know, it doesn't mean we, and to this day, we actually all get along. 00:06:23.059 --> 00:06:26.459 It's interesting when family said, you know, after that last election, you know, I can't 00:06:26.459 --> 00:06:27.859 talk to them anymore. 00:06:27.859 --> 00:06:32.220 I was always like, you mean before that you agreed on everything? 00:06:32.220 --> 00:06:37.019 No, but it was minor enough that I could delude myself. 00:06:37.019 --> 00:06:38.059 Now they were big issues. 00:06:38.059 --> 00:06:42.500 I could no longer hang on the delusion that we agreed. 00:06:42.500 --> 00:06:45.140 Rather than, we weren't called to agree. 00:06:45.140 --> 00:06:54.160 If God called humanity to be in perfect agreement, he should have stopped at Adam. 00:06:54.160 --> 00:06:59.000 Not because of Eve, don't go there. 00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:01.440 Because of all of the rest of creation. 00:07:01.440 --> 00:07:04.679 Shouldn't have made the animals, shouldn't have made Eve, shouldn't have made other people. 00:07:04.679 --> 00:07:08.440 And let's face it, if you read that story, there are other people in the story that have 00:07:08.440 --> 00:07:09.839 nothing to do with Adam and Eve. 00:07:09.839 --> 00:07:13.160 Where did they come from? 00:07:13.160 --> 00:07:14.160 Leave them all. 00:07:14.179 --> 00:07:17.940 We have Adam and no one will fight. 00:07:17.940 --> 00:07:20.420 No one will be upset with one another. 00:07:20.420 --> 00:07:21.420 Everyone will think the same. 00:07:21.420 --> 00:07:23.140 It will just be Adam. 00:07:23.140 --> 00:07:26.220 That was not God's vision for creation. 00:07:26.220 --> 00:07:28.940 Union and unity are not the same thing. 00:07:28.940 --> 00:07:31.540 Unity is everyone's the same. 00:07:31.540 --> 00:07:34.820 Union means different things come together. 00:07:34.820 --> 00:07:40.299 Not different things become the same, different things come together. 00:07:40.299 --> 00:07:45.519 So Jesus has this moment where he's got to figure out, just like everyone else, what 00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:47.839 is it that's exhausting me? 00:07:47.839 --> 00:07:49.640 What is it that's just taxing me? 00:07:49.640 --> 00:07:53.880 And he looks at all these people who aren't in sync with him because they're wanting a 00:07:53.880 --> 00:07:56.320 day of teaching. 00:07:56.320 --> 00:08:00.320 They're needing something and he's wanting peace and quiet. 00:08:00.320 --> 00:08:04.279 So they're out of sync with him and he adjusts. 00:08:04.279 --> 00:08:10.040 In the opening reading we hear that, you know, there's this condemnation of those who scatter. 00:08:10.779 --> 00:08:12.019 How do we scatter people? 00:08:12.019 --> 00:08:17.679 We scatter by dividing up and saying, if you don't agree with me, get out. 00:08:17.679 --> 00:08:19.380 If you don't agree, go over there. 00:08:19.380 --> 00:08:20.380 We're going to divide. 00:08:20.380 --> 00:08:24.260 Nowadays we're putting it, and I think it's just lovely, pretty language now. 00:08:24.260 --> 00:08:27.820 You see, especially politically in the United States, they talk about everyone because of 00:08:27.820 --> 00:08:28.820 the internet. 00:08:28.820 --> 00:08:29.820 They're just in their own bubble. 00:08:29.820 --> 00:08:31.260 They're in their own bubble. 00:08:31.260 --> 00:08:32.260 It's so pretty. 00:08:32.260 --> 00:08:34.979 It sounds like little kids playing with soap bubbles. 00:08:34.979 --> 00:08:39.140 It's so much nicer than saying no one knows how to handle anyone that doesn't think the 00:08:39.239 --> 00:08:40.239 way they do. 00:08:40.239 --> 00:08:46.039 You know, we just, nope, just stay in my bubble and I will pretend that most of the world 00:08:46.039 --> 00:08:50.280 agrees with me and there's not a bunch of different opinions out there. 00:08:50.280 --> 00:08:53.359 And we think, and all we do is we scatter. 00:08:53.359 --> 00:08:58.400 Exclusivity in the church, you know, through the Middle Ages, scattering that we hear in 00:08:58.400 --> 00:09:02.119 the Old Testament became excommunicating people. 00:09:02.119 --> 00:09:05.119 If that isn't scattering the flock, what is? 00:09:05.119 --> 00:09:08.719 You know, that's, that is the wrong approach. 00:09:08.719 --> 00:09:12.940 The wrong approach is to say, you know, if someone here disagrees with me, all I have 00:09:12.940 --> 00:09:16.659 to do is get them out of the parish and my workload is lightened that much anyway. 00:09:16.659 --> 00:09:24.539 If I can get enough of you to disagree with me, they'll be parking at Christmas. 00:09:24.539 --> 00:09:26.539 Get them out. 00:09:26.539 --> 00:09:30.460 You know, it lightens your workload. 00:09:30.460 --> 00:09:36.780 It lightens that effort in life if I can just ignore anyone that doesn't keep sync with 00:09:36.840 --> 00:09:38.840 my journey. 00:09:38.840 --> 00:09:40.919 But it's not what we're called to do. 00:09:40.919 --> 00:09:47.679 Even Paul says today in his letter to the Ephesians that Jesus came and he did two things. 00:09:47.679 --> 00:09:53.159 One we get, the other we pretend we get but we don't get, which is he says, to those of 00:09:53.159 --> 00:09:57.799 you that are near, and he's not talking geographically, he's talking philosophically and religiously 00:09:57.799 --> 00:10:01.840 and theologically, to those of you who are near, peace. 00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:06.400 To those of you who are not near, he preached peace. 00:10:06.400 --> 00:10:10.780 This is why Pope Francis has said, get rid of the culture wars. 00:10:10.780 --> 00:10:15.640 Quit investing in the culture wars, which are, to those who are with us, we say peace. 00:10:15.640 --> 00:10:18.460 To those who disagree, we say war. 00:10:18.460 --> 00:10:22.619 It's not what the scripture says. 00:10:22.619 --> 00:10:28.059 Scripture says, to those who disagree with us, peace. 00:10:28.059 --> 00:10:29.460 It's okay to disagree. 00:10:29.559 --> 00:10:36.760 I think the reason we get exhausted is because we are so in the habit of getting into the 00:10:36.760 --> 00:10:41.599 language, we hear the rhetoric nowadays, the public displays of just hateful language that 00:10:41.599 --> 00:10:43.559 have become normative. 00:10:43.559 --> 00:10:47.520 And we kind of think, oh, when we disagree with people, we hate them. 00:10:47.520 --> 00:10:51.320 And therefore, if we disagree with them, they will hate us and we don't want to be hated. 00:10:51.320 --> 00:10:56.960 So then we start to kind of not be who we really are so that we can be liked rather 00:10:56.960 --> 00:11:00.979 than be who we are and disagreed with. 00:11:00.979 --> 00:11:05.539 We just don't trust that process to be who we truly are. 00:11:05.539 --> 00:11:11.219 And some will disagree with us, but they don't have to hate us unless we believe too in that 00:11:11.219 --> 00:11:17.219 model that disagreement and hating one another is the same thing. 00:11:17.219 --> 00:11:21.539 I think most of us have had the experience. 00:11:21.539 --> 00:11:26.020 I mentioned last week, and I got some very interesting comments from people, which is 00:11:26.080 --> 00:11:31.679 why I don't mind mentioning it again, that I do believe there are a lot of married couples 00:11:31.679 --> 00:11:38.799 who love one another, even though God put them on earth to cancel out each other's vote. 00:11:38.799 --> 00:11:42.039 And they do it so consistently. 00:11:42.039 --> 00:11:45.739 And that doesn't mean that one of them doesn't love the other. 00:11:45.739 --> 00:11:48.419 It means they disagree. 00:11:48.419 --> 00:11:54.520 You know, when one person says, oh, I worry about the salvation of the soul of my spouse 00:11:54.820 --> 00:11:59.099 because I don't know, they belong to another faith or they're in a different spot in their 00:11:59.099 --> 00:12:00.099 journey. 00:12:00.099 --> 00:12:03.859 The problem with that is they've got all these reasons that this is what they have to do 00:12:03.859 --> 00:12:05.539 to be saved. 00:12:05.539 --> 00:12:10.900 I mean, unless they really think their spouse is a bad person, oh, no, they're a good person. 00:12:10.900 --> 00:12:12.380 I just want them saved. 00:12:12.380 --> 00:12:16.080 Are you worried God doesn't see that they're a good person? 00:12:16.080 --> 00:12:19.340 Are you worried that God has things that are more important to him than them being a good 00:12:19.340 --> 00:12:21.440 person? 00:12:21.440 --> 00:12:24.900 And so they don't understand every time they're like, I'm concerned for the salvation. 00:12:24.900 --> 00:12:28.719 What they're saying is at some level, I think when God takes a good look, they ain't getting 00:12:28.719 --> 00:12:29.719 in. 00:12:29.719 --> 00:12:33.440 That's a little insulting. 00:12:33.440 --> 00:12:39.020 I can see that, you know, because they've got a system that needs to be met rather than 00:12:39.020 --> 00:12:44.080 the goodness of the person speaking to God about who they are. 00:12:44.080 --> 00:12:49.700 And so we ask God today to help us to start to see with that wider lens that says we disagree 00:12:49.820 --> 00:12:51.700 and we're not going to agree. 00:12:51.700 --> 00:12:53.320 We're not always going to agree. 00:12:53.320 --> 00:12:56.400 There are some people in your life you'll never agree with. 00:12:56.400 --> 00:13:03.140 And if that is the basis for your ability to love, your ability to love is extremely 00:13:03.140 --> 00:13:12.039 compromised because I've always contended, especially in families that with couples, 00:13:12.039 --> 00:13:16.780 you don't even have a chance to be in love until you're disagreeing. 00:13:16.780 --> 00:13:19.859 Coming up to that moment is romance. 00:13:19.859 --> 00:13:25.419 And all of a sudden you look over and go, oh, I've fallen in love with another person 00:13:25.419 --> 00:13:28.200 and other person. 00:13:28.200 --> 00:13:30.440 We're not, we don't have this in common. 00:13:30.440 --> 00:13:32.000 Now you have the chance to love. 00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:36.880 I always, I hate, I hate to disagree with the great theologians of our days like Whitney 00:13:36.880 --> 00:13:46.000 Houston, but love of myself is not the greatest love of all. 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:49.599 Love of another, it's of another person. 00:13:49.599 --> 00:13:54.520 And so we have to come together and say, you know, we have to somehow celebrate the fact 00:13:54.520 --> 00:13:59.700 that God has decided to create plurality in the world. 00:13:59.700 --> 00:14:04.440 That we come together in love, not in agreement always. 00:14:04.440 --> 00:14:12.039 And that we start to look across the divide and say, I disagree, I don't hate, I disagree. 00:14:12.080 --> 00:14:17.640 And if someone chooses to hate you back, you can disagree with that too. 00:14:17.640 --> 00:14:20.359 But we don't have to hate. 00:14:20.359 --> 00:14:23.200 That will exhaust us. 00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:27.219 That will take an energy that will no longer allow us to be ourselves. 00:14:27.219 --> 00:14:34.599 You know, it finally hit me that when my family comes for holidays, I don't dread my family 00:14:34.599 --> 00:14:36.200 coming. 00:14:36.200 --> 00:14:44.159 I dread the fact that sometimes the real me will take a hike and I'll kind of be the peacemaker. 00:14:44.159 --> 00:14:48.080 You know, because if we disagree, what if we hate each other? 00:14:48.080 --> 00:14:49.640 Because we've been taught that. 00:14:49.640 --> 00:14:55.880 Rather than be exactly who you are, let them be exactly who they are, and now you have 00:14:55.880 --> 00:14:59.760 a chance to love, to love another. 00:14:59.760 --> 00:15:03.799 If we can get that in our faith, if we can get that in our country, if we can find that 00:15:03.880 --> 00:15:06.960 in our families, we move towards healing. 00:15:06.960 --> 00:15:10.320 We actually have the energy to build the kingdom of God. 00:15:10.320 --> 00:15:14.840 Otherwise, we will continue to find ourselves exhausted by hate.

Father Pat's message calls us to embrace the challenging but sacred work of love in diversity. He reflects on the Gospel passage where Jesus, though exhausted, responds with compassion to the crowd, illustrating that true vocation arises not from personal preference but from the needs around us. Father Pat warns against the temptation to retreat into comfort, entitlement, or ideological isolation, and instead invites us to confront the exhausting effects of division, judgment, and hate. He emphasizes that love begins where agreement ends, and that true Christian discipleship means learning to engage others in their full otherness—with compassion, peace, and inclusion, rather than demanding conformity. The Gospel, he reminds us, calls us to union, not uniformity; to community formed not by sameness, but by shared love across difference. Father Pat begins by situating Jesus’ moment in the Gospel of Mark within the real and relatable human experience of burnout. The apostles are tired after their mission, and Jesus himself calls them to rest. But their retreat is interrupted by the persistent needs of the crowd, who arrive ahead of them. In this moment, Jesus chooses compassion over entitlement. He does not claim his “day off,” but instead sees the people as “sheep without a shepherd” and responds with love. This becomes a metaphor for all who have vocations—whether ordained, lay, familial, or professional. A vocation is not a personal project or entitlement; it is a response to the needs of others. We are not called to impose our gifts on others, but to offer them when the community calls for them. This challenges the modern tendency to treat ministry or calling as a possession or right, rather than a service. Father Pat then expands the message to address a deeper spiritual and societal exhaustion. He challenges us to consider what truly exhausts us—not just what taxes us, but what depletes our soul. Relationships, he reminds us, are inherently inconvenient; they will at times misalign with our energy or desires. That is part of love. To expect harmony at all times is a delusion. He uses the example of parenting to illustrate how often love demands self-sacrifice at inconvenient times. Similarly, he notes how people can undergo personal conversions—often through life changes like having children—and then become frustrated when others, such as their children, do not follow the same path. This expectation—that others should keep pace with our own journey—leads to disillusionment and isolation. The homily takes a prophetic turn when Father Pat critiques the divisive nature of modern society. He decries the way we have normalized hatred and exclusion in the name of disagreement. In political, religious, and social contexts, we increasingly live in “bubbles” of like-mindedness, mistaking unity for uniformity. But the Christian call is not to sameness—it is to union. God’s creation, from the beginning, was pluralistic. The presence of difference is not a flaw, but a feature of divine design. Jesus, Paul, and the Church call us not to eliminate difference but to embrace it in love. Father Pat highlights Saint Paul’s message in Ephesians, where Paul speaks of Christ bringing peace to those who are near and preaching peace to those who are far. This means that peace is not just for insiders, but also for outsiders—for those who disagree with us, who are different from us. He references Pope Francis’ call to abandon the “culture wars,” which pit believers against each other in ideological battles rather than uniting them in the peace of Christ. True Christian mission is not to wage war on those who differ from us, but to extend peace to them. The homily also critiques religious exclusivity and the historical tendency of the Church to “scatter” through excommunication or exclusion. This fracturing of the body of Christ contradicts the Gospel call to inclusion. Even within families, Father Pat observes, we often struggle to accept disagreement without letting it rupture love. He humorously and poignantly notes that many couples and families have sustained deep love despite fundamental political or theological differences. That is not a failure—it is a testament to love’s power to transcend agreement. Father Pat challenges the assumption that disagreement implies spiritual danger or moral defect. He raises the pastoral concern of people who fear for the salvation of loved ones who do not share their faith, suggesting that this fear often reflects an implicit distrust in God’s mercy. If someone is a good person, he asks, do we not believe that God sees that goodness? Do we really think God values doctrinal alignment over the substance of a person’s heart? Ultimately, Father Pat’s message is a call to spiritual maturity. Love doesn’t begin in harmony—it begins when harmony is broken, when we are called to love the “other” in their otherness. The exhaustion we feel often stems not from service or sacrifice, but from the energy we expend maintaining illusions of control, uniformity, and moral superiority. True rest and spiritual vitality come not from withdrawal, but from learning to love across difference, to find union without requiring uniformity, and to respond to the needs of others even when they are out of sync with our own desires. In this way, Father Pat points us toward a vision of the Kingdom of God that is grounded in compassion, humility, and the radical inclusivity of Christ. He reminds us that we will not always agree—but that we are always called to love. Where we meet difference with peace, and disagreement with compassion, the Kingdom is built.
