Jesus passed through towns and villages teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, Lord, will only a few people be saved? He answered them, strive to enter through the narrow gate. For many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, Lord, open the door for us. He will save you and reply, I do not know where you are from. And you will say, we ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets. Then he will say to you, I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, you evildoers. Then there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out. And people will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last. The Gospel of the Lord. The three readings today kind of walk us through a path of kind of how we come to understand the grace of God in our lives. The first reading has a couple hidden moments in it that are worth fleshing out here. The first is this idea that God gathers people from many nations and many of them will come and see the glory of God. Now, that's a different statement than the places in the gospel where he says he will manifest his glory or he will show his glory. He basically says you gather people from all over and you know what? Some of them can see it and some of them can't. I think we always want to make things, well, God showed that person and God didn't show that person. God helped them, God didn't help them. You know, some of us learn to see things differently. I mean, most of you, if you have a family of any size at all, you know there are those that can turn the same event into something joyful or something not joyful. It's the same event. You know, we bring our eyes to the situation, but what he does tell you is because you know in the Old Testament, these prophets, they are much more than we are nowadays rooted in that concept that we are created in the image of God. So the more people that gather, the more likely that more people will see God because there are more images to see. You know, you will not see God's image in every person. That's why God gives us siblings. You won't see the image of God in every single person in your life. So, you know, church is not about making sure we have the right people. We gather as many, all of the judgment says, you know, at the end of time, the angels will come and they will take these people and they'll take those people and they'll take each of us and get the evil out. You'll notice it says that job does not belong to us. It's the angels, it's God. There's very many different stories and we read that. We go, got a job. Well, we'll take care of that God. We'll sort them out. Not our job. Our job is never to sort that out. We can help each other. We can share our own faith with people. We shouldn't back away from what we believe, but it's not our job to do that. So he says, gather as many images of God, as many people as you can to yourself. And no, you know, that famous, God never gives me anything I can't handle. Not true. I mean, it's horrible to say, and I have dealt with this in my own family. If God gave no one anything they couldn't handle and managed each of our lives so that we could, suicide would not exist. Some people just don't know what to do and we can vilify them. It just doesn't make any sense to do it. They're to a point where they don't know what to do. But those of you who are here, have to know that if you look at every crisis in your life, if you look at every horrible thing, you know, Paul talks about these, his language, not Paul, it's the author to the Hebrews, which is almost certainly not Paul. The son, you know, he says, you know, who among you, what parent wouldn't discipline their children? Yeah, but people use this to say, you know, everything that happens in life. I just found out that I'm dying of a horrible disease. Well, what parent wouldn't give their child a horrible disease to teach them a good lesson? You take this, it gets a little far, gets a little far-fetched. You take this, it gets a little far, gets a little far-fetched. What we have to do is say, this word discipline in the old Greek, it's not just this sort of spare the rod, spoil the child discipline. It means that every suffering is a chance for discipleship. It doesn't mean God sent it to you. It doesn't mean that God is running around creating suffering, that God is running around causing pain to teach us lessons. Life does that on its own. You know, maybe I'm just at that perfect age where I'm starting to realize that I am either going to have to die young or grow old. One of those two is going to happen, and neither of them are painless. You know, in other words, life itself, and that's not, well, you know, you know, God is slowly destroying the cartilage in my knees to teach me a lesson. No, no, I'm afraid years of running get that. You know, things happen, but what we have to ask, and this is why in the gospel, Jesus keeps saying, where are you from? I don't know where you're from. And they're like, oh, well, you know, you taught us in the streets. Yes, but where are you from? Well, you know, we were at parties with you. Where are you from? And the answer is from God. Oh, the minute we see that, we see the glory. Not only that, when we're faced with these trials, I think, you know, if you want to get into that mythological that devil is the deceiver, the great deceit that creates most sin is every time there is a looming challenge, a looming crisis, you know, really something that's got us worried. The deceiver will tell you, look at that problem. Look at that problem. Look at that problem. The voice of God will say to you, remember who you are. Remember where you came from. Remember all you've already come through. You know, every one of you, if you could line up every crisis and issue, sibling that you've had in life, I don't know why I'm on my siblings today. If you can line up everything from inconvenience to real tragedy in your life, and you're sitting here, you've just lined up your history of recovery, your history of resilience, your history of I got through that. You know, like Jacob who becomes Israel, sometimes you get through the fight and you may have a little limp when you're done. I got through it. And we forget that our life is a history of overcoming things. You know, we have survived. And you know, I don't think, I think in English, we've come to think that survived means I lived through it. We never even invented that word. That would be, I don't know, pervive or paravive. Survive means we lived over it. In all other languages, that's incredibly clear in Spanish. It's, I lived over this. Because we're connected to God. We live over the tragedies. And we have survived tragedies. And we have recovered from terrible things. And I mean, and we've survived them so well that when we start to talk about them, we go like, oh, I forgot about that. You know, we're now getting to the point where people will say, do you remember during the shutdown, what this was like? And they're like, oh man, I totally forgot how strange that was. And at the time, the world was coming to an end and it was insurmountable. When do we finally learn from the pattern so that the next looming crisis, we go, stop looking at the crisis and remember who you are and whose you are. Remember that. And you have a history of overcoming, of surviving. You have that history, not, it's another tragedy. I'm not gonna make it through this one. You've made it through them before. We are created with amazing resilience. And it kind of sounds like we don't need God. We are so good at this. No, of course, every skill we have comes from God. Sometimes the grace of God is going to look with, like what they now call, you know, your emotional toolbox, your internal sense of who you are. Sometimes the grace of God looks like other people. Sometimes the grace of God does look like a situation opening up. But most of the times, the grace of God is something that's been with you all along. And we think, oh, well, you know, I don't wanna feel like I'm self-sufficient. Where do you think that self came from? It's always grace of God. It's the false dichotomy of religion. If you take credit for something, you're not giving God credit. No, no, you know, trust me. When I did well, my mother took credit. Her mother and her father and her, all black, went right back to God. So when, you know, we just have to stop seeing that as a dichotomy and recognize that God's grace is part of all of those things. And God's resilience. There's a old religious joke. He's shocked in four years, I haven't told it. But where a man, you know, Bob and Pete are out camping. Bob gets up early in the morning and thinks, I'm gonna go off on my own to have some private time. And he gets about a mile away and there's this cliff and this gorgeous view and part of the cliff gives way and he starts to fall. And as he goes down the cliff, he grabs a root that's sticking out the side and he starts bargaining with God. Okay, if you get me out of this, I'll go back to church. And he starts to climb and the root starts to give out. He goes, okay, okay, I'll go back to church and I'll volunteer. And a cute comes out again. He goes, okay, and I will tithe, I will give money. Sort of feels, but he still can't tell. And all of a sudden, out of nowhere, because he went off on his own, his friend, Bob says, Pete, where are you? And he starts crying out, Pete, Pete, and Pete runs. And Pete reaches his hands down and Bob says, nevermind God, Pete's here. Somehow, if it isn't a magical angel, it wasn't God. We have a history of grace for every pain in our life, we're here. All of a sudden we're sitting here. It's in this very moment, not terribly hot or cold in here. The pews are, well, they're not a bed of nails, but they're comfortable. They're not a bed of nails, but they're comfortable. Well, they're not a bed of nails, but they're comfortable. He's mildly amusing, but he goes on too long. I mean, it's all a balance. It's all a little bit of a balance. And you go, what about, you know, I look back at high school. I look back at tough years. You know, I look back at the death of loved ones. Times where I thought I can't get past this. And I did. And if I find out a tragedy is coming tomorrow, I'm so wrapped up in the tragedy, I forget. Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait. I'm the person that's gotten through those things. Next crisis, stop looking at the crisis. And remember, hear Jesus saying, where are you from? You know, this idea of the narrow gate, it starts out bizarre. Nope, the gate's narrow. Why is the gate narrow? Because it says at the end, you know, if you get there late and they shut the door, you're locked out. That wouldn't happen if the gate were wide. The problem isn't that the gate's narrow. The problem is that the door is shut. The metaphor flips halfway through that story. But in a narrow gate, we can't all rush it at once. So, you know, Jesus is really, we always think Jesus is saying, stay on the straight and narrow, stay on the straight and narrow. Don't put everything off till the last minute. You know, don't put it off until the last minute. You can learn that here at church. You can learn that at the All Arena. Don't show up five minutes before the concert. You will not get in. Or as Jesus says, and this is really shocking to many theologians, he doesn't say, you're gonna be in the outer darkness for the rest of your life. He's gonna say, have sometimes the first or last. You know, it's actually one of the most hopeful of all of these. It doesn't say anybody doesn't get in. It just says, you might be the last one in. You know, your journey might be longer than the next person. It's probably one of the most hopeful of all the parables. But what he says is, you know, know who you are. I don't think I can pass this course. You know what Jesus says? Do you know who you are? Go for the A. Stop trying to pass the course. I remember having an argument in seminary. I remember celibacy. I remember one argument in seminary where because the formation, we got all these talks about, look, celibacy, obedience, you know, we need to make sure that you've got the kind of psychological, you know, the emotional structure. We really wanna know that you're gonna be able, you know, to live your priesthood. We want to know that you can kind of survive these tough things. And I finally said to the rector, you know, for three years, you've been talking about that. Do we ever talk about whether or not we can flourish? No, the goal is just barely survive this horrible thing called priesthood. Is it? Is that the goal? And the more you hear that message, the more you hear, this is gonna be terrible. It's gonna be awful. I'll be lucky. I'll be lucky to make it to 40. You know, really? I mean, I'm serious when I tell people if I'd known I was gonna live this long, I would have taken better care of myself. I just didn't think I'd make it past. I mean, it was always this sort of, here's how you're gonna barely get through. If your prayer life is together, you'll be okay. What about thriving? Forget about whether they're gonna be able to be a priest. What about what kind of priest they could be? We sometimes are like, can I get into heaven? Jesus says, go for the bullseye. Do you know who you are? Do you know what you've overcome? Do you know your history of recovery and resilience? Tomorrow may bring a crisis. No one knows. And when you see the crisis, before you start to try and figure out how bad it is, make sure you hear the voice of God reminding you how amazing you are. Not because you're on your own, but because God's grace is with you in the width of your community, in the strength of your journey, and in the emotional life that God has given you as a grace.",
