It is two liturgies historically that were separate, Palm, Sunday, and then the Passion, really even today, belongs by rights to Friday. That's the Good Friday liturgy. And it seems very odd to do it today and say, now, come Thursday we're going to back up and start over again at the Last Supper. But it has just been a pastoral practice of the church that when there is an important message and moment that doesn't fall on Sunday, they will somehow, the word they use in the liturgy is they transmute it to Sunday. So, Ascension Thursday, you know, which is ten days before Pentecost, is a Sunday. So is Pentecost. It's a long week. No, it should be the Thursday, but they transmuted it to Sunday. This happens all through the year. It seems Christmas is the only holiday that we'll go to that's not a Sunday. So it gets kind of joined in not an easy way to the triumphant entry. And the triumphant entry of Jesus sort of takes a back seat and never gets its own liturgy anymore. Even though we think, oh, all the rituals and the waving of the palms and the blessing of the water, it's much more visual. But if you get a chance, we have the 7 p.m. on Thursday, 7 p.m. on Friday, and the 8 p.m. on Saturday, and these are very unique rituals. You will see things you don't see any other time of year. Thursday we have not just the institution of the Eucharist, which is the center of our prayer life, but also the washing of the feet, which is that ritual that centers our ministry, and it ties the two together, that we don't gather for prayer if we're not going to go out and do something, and we won't do as much in the world if we aren't powered by prayer. So we have this tie between the two, and on Friday we really pull apart this gospel. We'll do John's version, but we really pull apart the gospel of the passion and death. And you do the longer form, and it's a little more intricate. Saturday is two things. It is Saturday night, so we start in the dark. It's the darkness of the two, and we hear the Old Testament stories. There's a few readings that proclaim what's going to happen, and finally there's a moment where the lights come on, and we have, you know, the Easter begins, and flowers come in, and the Gloria happens for the first time in 6 weeks. So it's a big moment. And then after the homily, we have baptism and confirmation. This year we only have one of each. If you've always wanted to see an Easter vigil but have heard it's very long, it will be less long. One of each. This could be your year. And then we have our mass, our liturgy just of the Eucharist. So it's longer. It's longer than Sunday morning. You can get seats, though, so it's a trade-off. If you choose to come, it's a really great experience, and it's just fascinating how many people will say, you know, I was a Catholic for 70 years, never been to one of these, it's amazing. Because we just don't think to go all the time, and we've made plans for Easter morning already. But if you get a chance, I would suggest. Those are not days of obligation, depending on who you ask. There are countries and places that try, but it canonically can't work. Because the other canon law of those days is, and this is the mandatory one, we are the trinitum, those three nights, we are only allowed to do one celebration in a parish. So if all the people of this parish from all the masses came to one celebration, they would crucify me. It would be unbearable. They can't get that many people. It's not, we don't push it as a day of obligation because we should never try to demand something we cannot provide for you. So if it's something that interests you, I hope you'll take time. But the rather, I think, fortunate combining of these two odd ideas into one liturgy gives us a very different moment to reflect. We can talk about Jesus in this, which is done most places, and I've done most years. That Jesus is, we've got to see Jesus in those triumphant moments, and we've got to see Jesus in those horrible moments, and that's an important message. But you know, this year I've been struck much more, not by, I mean, obviously it's centered around Jesus, but I don't think we always look at the crowd. Which crowd are we? Are we the crowd that screams and yells to welcome someone in, or are we the crowd that screams and yells to crucify someone we don't like? I mean, who are we as a crowd? I think that is the much more interesting question that comes out of these two readings because the crowd, and I always say, it's similar to politics. You know, if you look at the last 10 years, and you're from the outside, you would think, well, the country was clearly more to the left this election, more to the right that election, then you talk to Americans, and most of us haven't changed our mind in 20 years. Whose voice prevails? Whoever shows up. I mean, we all know that we are a country with, if not the most, one of the longest, unbroken traditions of people getting to hope. And we have probably the worst voter turnout in the world. It's always, who is motivated enough to turn out in any moment, and why, and why not? It's not, you don't find a lot of people who will say, oh, I voted for the winner every time, I just keep flipping. No. Whose voice, there's a line in that gospel, their voices prevailed. Meaning, you know, Pilate's washing his hands of it. Pilate didn't listen to one group of people. It wasn't his fault. Those voices prevailed. The milk spilled. No one spilled it. No, no, Pilate chose who to listen to. What you do later, where were all the people from that opening scene? They're there. And where were the people from the passion? Many aboard the opening. But the energy of the crowd is different depending on the passion people come with. Are we more passionate in our welcomes? Are we more passionate in our donations and money? What gets our energy going? I think that's the question this liturgy asks. We know that God is with us in our high moments and our low moments. But how are we with God in what could be an amazing moment of welcome to whoever needs? It's Jesus in this story, but we're called to see Jesus in everyone. How large is our energy when it's time to throw rocks at someone we don't like or dismiss people in need or look the other way and someone's really in trouble? As a crowd, or even individually as members of a crowd, who are we? I think we are better at protest than support of anything. You know, most people... It's always... Every commentator talks about it. We all listen to it. It just sort of rolls over us now to know that most of us in our culture for the last 20, 25 years, we can absolutely tell you what we stand against. What we stand for? Not so much. What do I stand for? Anything against them? No. And it's why leaders for years have stopped having to ever put out a platform. Their platform is always, I'm not the other guy. That's always the platform. Let me tell you why they will ruin everything. How many things do we see happen and change Okay, this is the change we want and no one ever says, and how will that make things better? It's obvious, isn't it? Sometimes we just... And they always say, you want to unify people, give them an enemy. Give them an enemy. That's what they did. Jesus became the enemy. And man, they got a much bigger crowd than they had, obviously, because they prevailed. It's much easier to get a crowd to turn against someone than to get a crowd to support people. And Jesus comes to town, and they welcome him. Are we the crowd of welcome or the crowd of persecution? There's not a lot of middle ground. If someone needs welcome, and we say, I don't want to hurt those people. I just want to stand here quietly while they fall apart. Who are we helping in the world? And how? And how do we see help coming? And who do we want to be as a positive force? That first crowd is... They've just got something in their hearts that they want to be. I always love that we have to sort of reenact it here. I mean... And everyone is singing and waving palms wide because I'm throwing water at you. Now, in another situation, you would be irritated. But... I have a good friend, Kathleen Staker, once at my last parish, and I had this... We didn't have a second sprinkler for the... We had to do Easter morning in the gym. And so we used this. It was a straw broom. Worst thing ever. Because it would absorb nothing. So I would dip it in, and it would throw about a gallon of water, and then it was dropped. And I get out on Easter morning, and there she is in all of her Easter glory, and she looked like a raccoon after I hit her with that water. Makeup is run. And she literally looked like... I mean, like one of her best friends had just smacked her, which I basically had. You know? And yet, it's a happy moment. I mean, it's been 10 years, and she really is almost over it. It was a happy moment. Because we were there... Easter is about what we can do in the world. It's not about what we shouldn't. It's not about who's the villain. It's about how we create heroes and support and want. How we lift up people who will lift up others. How we don't lift up people who will put down others. And Pilate is sort of milquetoast. I mean, it's a very sad story. I see nothing wrong with him. I've been waiting to meet him. I kind of like him. Kill him, okay. Because whatever the people want... He doesn't even know what the people want. Some of the people want it, some don't. Just sort of the path of least resistance. We need to lift one another up, and we need to lift the people up who lift people up. That's the crowd at the beginning of Mass. Jesus has done nothing but lift people up. You know, Jesus really doesn't rail against anyone in the Gospels. It's easy to say the only people he rails against are the other people who are raiding against people. It's not even that. Jesus comes head to head with Pharisees and scribes and the people who are trying to control everyone. But he doesn't talk about them behind their back to gain popularity with the crowd. He argues with them. He never says, let me tell you about the scribes and Pharisees. He always says, use scribes and Pharisees. He argues with them. But when he's talking to the crowd, he gives them an agenda to accomplish. That's passing off. And he tells them to feed the poor and to clothe the naked and to visit the sick. He gives them things they are to do. You know, free the imprisoned. And we have to decide, are we a crowd who lifts up those who lift up? Or are we a crowd who will lift up those who will tear down?", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 5.0, "text": " Today's liturgy is a bit of a mishmash.", "tokens": [50364, 2692, WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.000 Today's liturgy is a bit of a mishmash. 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:09.000 It is two liturgies historically that were separate, 00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:12.000 Palm, Sunday, and then the Passion, 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:17.000 really even today, belongs by rights to Friday. 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:21.000 That's the Good Friday liturgy. 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:24.000 And it seems very odd to do it today and say, 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:27.000 now, come Thursday we're going to back up and start over again 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:30.000 at the Last Supper. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:33.000 But it has just been a pastoral practice of the church 00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:38.000 that when there is an important message and moment 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:41.000 that doesn't fall on Sunday, 00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:44.000 they will somehow, the word they use in the liturgy is 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:46.000 they transmute it to Sunday. 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:49.000 So, Ascension Thursday, you know, 00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:54.000 which is ten days before Pentecost, is a Sunday. 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:56.000 So is Pentecost. 00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:58.000 It's a long week. 00:00:58.000 --> 00:01:00.000 No, it should be the Thursday, 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:02.000 but they transmuted it to Sunday. 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:04.000 This happens all through the year. 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:07.000 It seems Christmas is the only holiday that we'll go to 00:01:07.000 --> 00:01:09.000 that's not a Sunday. 00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:16.000 So it gets kind of joined in not an easy way 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:18.000 to the triumphant entry. 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:21.000 And the triumphant entry of Jesus sort of takes a back seat 00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:24.000 and never gets its own liturgy anymore. 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:26.000 Even though we think, oh, all the rituals 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:29.000 and the waving of the palms and the blessing of the water, 00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:31.000 it's much more visual. 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:35.000 But if you get a chance, we have the 7 p.m. on Thursday, 00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:39.000 7 p.m. on Friday, and the 8 p.m. on Saturday, 00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:41.000 and these are very unique rituals. 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:43.000 You will see things you don't see any other time of year. 00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:46.000 Thursday we have not just the institution of the Eucharist, 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:49.000 which is the center of our prayer life, 00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:51.000 but also the washing of the feet, 00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:54.000 which is that ritual that centers our ministry, 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:56.000 and it ties the two together, 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:59.000 that we don't gather for prayer 00:01:59.000 --> 00:02:01.000 if we're not going to go out and do something, 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:03.000 and we won't do as much in the world 00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:05.000 if we aren't powered by prayer. 00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:08.000 So we have this tie between the two, 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:11.000 and on Friday we really pull apart this gospel. 00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:14.000 We'll do John's version, but we really pull apart 00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:17.000 the gospel of the passion and death. 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:19.000 And you do the longer form, 00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:22.000 and it's a little more intricate. 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:25.000 Saturday is two things. 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:28.000 It is Saturday night, so we start in the dark. 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:30.000 It's the darkness of the two, 00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:32.000 and we hear the Old Testament stories. 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:35.000 There's a few readings that proclaim what's going to happen, 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:38.000 and finally there's a moment where the lights come on, 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:41.000 and we have, you know, the Easter begins, 00:02:41.000 --> 00:02:44.000 and flowers come in, and the Gloria happens 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:46.000 for the first time in 6 weeks. 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:48.000 So it's a big moment. 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:50.000 And then after the homily, 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:52.000 we have baptism and confirmation. 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:55.000 This year we only have one of each. 00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:57.000 If you've always wanted to see an Easter vigil 00:02:57.000 --> 00:02:59.000 but have heard it's very long, it will be less long. 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:01.000 One of each. 00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:04.000 This could be your year. 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:06.000 And then we have our mass, 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:08.000 our liturgy just of the Eucharist. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:10.000 So it's longer. 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:12.000 It's longer than Sunday morning. 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:15.000 You can get seats, though, so it's a trade-off. 00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:18.000 If you choose to come, 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:21.000 it's a really great experience, 00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:24.000 and it's just fascinating how many people will say, 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:27.000 you know, I was a Catholic for 70 years, 00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:29.000 never been to one of these, it's amazing. 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:32.000 Because we just don't think to go all the time, 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:34.000 and we've made plans for Easter morning already. 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:37.000 But if you get a chance, I would suggest. 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:40.000 Those are not days of obligation, depending on who you ask. 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:43.000 There are countries and places that try, 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:45.000 but it canonically can't work. 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:48.000 Because the other canon law of those days is, 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:50.000 and this is the mandatory one, 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:53.000 we are the trinitum, those three nights, 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:57.000 we are only allowed to do one celebration in a parish. 00:03:57.000 --> 00:04:01.000 So if all the people of this parish 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:04.000 from all the masses came to one celebration, 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:06.000 they would crucify me. 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:08.000 It would be unbearable. 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:10.000 They can't get that many people. 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:15.000 It's not, we don't push it as a day of obligation 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:18.000 because we should never try to demand something 00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:20.000 we cannot provide for you. 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:22.000 So if it's something that interests you, 00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:24.000 I hope you'll take time. 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:29.000 But the rather, I think, fortunate combining 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:33.000 of these two odd ideas into one liturgy 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:37.000 gives us a very different moment to reflect. 00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:40.000 We can talk about Jesus in this, 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:43.000 which is done most places, and I've done most years. 00:04:43.000 --> 00:04:46.000 That Jesus is, we've got to see Jesus 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:48.000 in those triumphant moments, 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:51.000 and we've got to see Jesus in those horrible moments, 00:04:51.000 --> 00:04:53.000 and that's an important message. 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:55.000 But you know, this year I've been struck much more, 00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:59.000 not by, I mean, obviously it's centered around Jesus, 00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:02.000 but I don't think we always look at the crowd. 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:05.000 Which crowd are we? 00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:08.000 Are we the crowd that screams and yells 00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:10.000 to welcome someone in, 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:13.000 or are we the crowd that screams and yells 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:16.000 to crucify someone we don't like? 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:19.000 I mean, who are we as a crowd? 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:23.000 I think that is the much more interesting question 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:25.000 that comes out of these two readings 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:27.000 because the crowd, and I always say, 00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:29.000 it's similar to politics. 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:32.000 You know, if you look at the last 10 years, 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:35.000 and you're from the outside, you would think, 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:38.000 well, the country was clearly more to the left this election, 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:40.000 more to the right that election, 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:42.000 then you talk to Americans, 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:45.000 and most of us haven't changed our mind in 20 years. 00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:48.000 Whose voice prevails? 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:50.000 Whoever shows up. 00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:53.000 I mean, we all know that we are a country with, 00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:57.000 if not the most, one of the longest, 00:05:57.000 --> 00:06:01.000 unbroken traditions of people getting to hope. 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:05.000 And we have probably the worst voter turnout in the world. 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:09.000 It's always, who is motivated enough 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:13.000 to turn out in any moment, and why, and why not? 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:17.000 It's not, you don't find a lot of people who will say, 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:19.000 oh, I voted for the winner every time, 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:21.000 I just keep flipping. 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:23.000 No. 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:26.000 Whose voice, there's a line in that gospel, 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:28.000 their voices prevailed. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:33.000 Meaning, you know, Pilate's washing his hands of it. 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:36.000 Pilate didn't listen to one group of people. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:38.000 It wasn't his fault. 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:40.000 Those voices prevailed. 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:42.000 The milk spilled. 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:44.000 No one spilled it. 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:46.000 No, no, Pilate chose who to listen to. 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:48.000 What you do later, 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:51.000 where were all the people from that opening scene? 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:53.000 They're there. 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:55.000 And where were the people from the passion? 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:57.000 Many aboard the opening. 00:06:57.000 --> 00:07:00.000 But the energy of the crowd is different 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:03.000 depending on the passion people come with. 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:06.000 Are we more passionate in our welcomes? 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:09.000 Are we more passionate in our donations and money? 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:12.000 What gets our energy going? 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:15.000 I think that's the question this liturgy asks. 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:18.000 We know that God is with us in our high moments 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:20.000 and our low moments. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:23.000 But how are we with God 00:07:23.000 --> 00:07:26.000 in what could be an amazing moment 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:28.000 of welcome to whoever needs? 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:30.000 It's Jesus in this story, 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:33.000 but we're called to see Jesus in everyone. 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:35.000 How large is our energy 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:39.000 when it's time to throw rocks at someone we don't like 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:41.000 or dismiss people in need 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:43.000 or look the other way 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:46.000 and someone's really in trouble? 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:50.000 As a crowd, or even individually as members of a crowd, 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:52.000 who are we? 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:57.000 I think we are better at protest than support of anything. 00:07:57.000 --> 00:07:59.000 You know, most people... 00:07:59.000 --> 00:08:01.000 It's always... 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:03.000 Every commentator talks about it. 00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:05.000 We all listen to it. 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:07.000 It just sort of rolls over us now 00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:10.000 to know that most of us in our culture 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:12.000 for the last 20, 25 years, 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:16.000 we can absolutely tell you what we stand against. 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:18.000 What we stand for? 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:20.000 Not so much. 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:22.000 What do I stand for? 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:24.000 Anything against them? 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:26.000 No. 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:31.000 And it's why leaders for years 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:35.000 have stopped having to ever put out a platform. 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:37.000 Their platform is always, 00:08:37.000 --> 00:08:39.000 I'm not the other guy. 00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:41.000 That's always the platform. 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:45.000 Let me tell you why they will ruin everything. 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:48.000 How many things do we see happen and change 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:50.000 Okay, this is the change we want 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:51.000 and no one ever says, 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:55.000 and how will that make things better? 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.000 It's obvious, isn't it? 00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:00.000 Sometimes we just... 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:01.000 And they always say, 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:02.000 you want to unify people, 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:04.000 give them an enemy. 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:06.000 Give them an enemy. 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:07.000 That's what they did. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:09.000 Jesus became the enemy. 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:12.000 And man, they got a much bigger crowd than they had, 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:14.000 obviously, because they prevailed. 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:17.000 It's much easier to get a crowd to turn against someone 00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:20.000 than to get a crowd to support people. 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:22.000 And Jesus comes to town, 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:25.000 and they welcome him. 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:27.000 Are we the crowd of welcome 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:30.000 or the crowd of persecution? 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:33.000 There's not a lot of middle ground. 00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:35.000 If someone needs welcome, 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:36.000 and we say, 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:39.000 I don't want to hurt those people. 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:41.000 I just want to stand here quietly 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:44.000 while they fall apart. 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:47.000 Who are we helping in the world? 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:48.000 And how? 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:50.000 And how do we see help coming? 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:52.000 And who do we want to be as a positive force? 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:55.000 That first crowd is... 00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:57.000 They've just got something in their hearts 00:09:57.000 --> 00:09:58.000 that they want to be. 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:02.000 I always love that we have to sort of reenact it here. 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:03.000 I mean... 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:06.000 And everyone is singing and waving palms wide 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:09.000 because I'm throwing water at you. 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:11.000 Now, in another situation, 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:13.000 you would be irritated. 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:14.000 But... 00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:17.000 I have a good friend, Kathleen Staker, 00:10:17.000 --> 00:10:19.000 once at my last parish, 00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:20.000 and I had this... 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:22.000 We didn't have a second sprinkler for the... 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:25.000 We had to do Easter morning in the gym. 00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:26.000 And so we used this. 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:27.000 It was a straw broom. 00:10:27.000 --> 00:10:28.000 Worst thing ever. 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:30.000 Because it would absorb nothing. 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:31.000 So I would dip it in, 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:34.000 and it would throw about a gallon of water, 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:36.000 and then it was dropped. 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:38.000 And I get out on Easter morning, 00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:41.000 and there she is in all of her Easter glory, 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:44.000 and she looked like a raccoon after I hit her 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:45.000 with that water. 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:47.000 Makeup is run. 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:50.000 And she literally looked like... 00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:52.000 I mean, like one of her best friends 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:54.000 had just smacked her, 00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:56.000 which I basically had. 00:10:57.000 --> 00:10:58.000 You know? 00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:01.000 And yet, it's a happy moment. 00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:03.000 I mean, it's been 10 years, 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:05.000 and she really is almost over it. 00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:08.000 It was a happy moment. 00:11:09.000 --> 00:11:12.000 Because we were there... 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:15.000 Easter is about what we can do in the world. 00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:17.000 It's not about what we shouldn't. 00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:20.000 It's not about who's the villain. 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:23.000 It's about how we create heroes 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:27.000 and support and want. 00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:31.000 How we lift up people who will lift up others. 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:35.000 How we don't lift up people who will put down others. 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:40.000 And Pilate is sort of milquetoast. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:43.000 I mean, it's a very sad story. 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:45.000 I see nothing wrong with him. 00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:47.000 I've been waiting to meet him. 00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:48.000 I kind of like him. 00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:50.000 Kill him, okay. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:53.000 Because whatever the people want... 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:55.000 He doesn't even know what the people want. 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:58.000 Some of the people want it, some don't. 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:02.000 Just sort of the path of least resistance. 00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:04.000 We need to lift one another up, 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:07.000 and we need to lift the people up who lift people up. 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:10.000 That's the crowd at the beginning of Mass. 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:13.000 Jesus has done nothing but lift people up. 00:12:13.000 --> 00:12:18.000 You know, Jesus really doesn't rail against anyone in the Gospels. 00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:20.000 It's easy to say the only people he rails against 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:23.000 are the other people who are raiding against people. 00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:25.000 It's not even that. 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:28.000 Jesus comes head to head with Pharisees and scribes 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:30.000 and the people who are trying to control everyone. 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:32.000 But he doesn't talk about them behind their back 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:34.000 to gain popularity with the crowd. 00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:36.000 He argues with them. 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:37.000 He never says, 00:12:37.000 --> 00:12:39.000 let me tell you about the scribes and Pharisees. 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:42.000 He always says, use scribes and Pharisees. 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:44.000 He argues with them. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:46.000 But when he's talking to the crowd, 00:12:46.000 --> 00:12:48.000 he gives them an agenda to accomplish. 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:51.000 That's passing off. 00:12:51.000 --> 00:12:54.000 And he tells them to feed the poor 00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:57.000 and to clothe the naked and to visit the sick. 00:12:57.000 --> 00:13:00.000 He gives them things they are to do. 00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:03.000 You know, free the imprisoned. 00:13:03.000 --> 00:13:05.000 And we have to decide, 00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:08.000 are we a crowd who lifts up those who lift up? 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:13.000 Or are we a crowd who will lift up those who will tear down?

Father Pat’s message centers on the duality present in Palm Sunday’s liturgy—the juxtaposition of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem with His suffering and death—and challenges the congregation to reflect on their own role as part of the “crowd.” He explores the tension between celebration and rejection, between welcome and condemnation, and encourages believers to ask themselves not only where they stand with Jesus, but how they stand with others in need. Rather than focusing solely on Jesus’ Passion, Father Pat invites reflection on human behavior, social dynamics, and moral responsibility. Are we the crowd that welcomes Christ and lifts others up, or the crowd that turns against Him and tears others down? The central question is not merely who Jesus is, but who we are, and how we choose to act as individuals and as a collective. This thoughtful reflection begins with an acknowledgment of the liturgical complexity of Palm Sunday, which combines two distinct historical observances: the joyful procession of Jesus into Jerusalem and the solemn reading of the Passion. Father Pat notes the pastoral rationale behind the Church’s practice of "transmuting" Holy Days to Sundays for wider participation, even if it creates a liturgical dissonance. He humorously observes that Christmas is the only feast most people consistently attend on its proper day. Yet, rather than lament this mishmash, he sees it as a providential opportunity for deeper reflection. Father Pat emphasizes the importance of the Triduum—Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Saturday—as unique liturgical experiences that tie together prayer, service, sacrifice, and rebirth. Holy Thursday is not just about the Eucharist, but also the washing of feet, symbolizing the unity of worship and mission. On Good Friday, the Passion narrative invites us to sit with suffering and injustice. And at the Easter Vigil, the transition from darkness to light, death to life, symbolized in Scripture, sacrament, and ritual, offers a profound spiritual awakening. However, rather than dwelling exclusively on the person of Jesus—whom we know to be the central figure—Father Pat shifts the focus to the crowd. The same people who welcomed Jesus with palms and hosannas later cried out for His crucifixion. This dramatic shift in public sentiment raises a sobering question: “Which crowd are we?” He draws a poignant parallel to contemporary political and social life, where public opinion often swings not based on deep moral reflection, but on who shows up and who yells the loudest. As in Pilate’s court, it is often “whose voices prevail” that determines the outcome, not necessarily what is just or true. Father Pat challenges his listeners to consider their own energy and passions. Are we more animated in protest than in support? Are we more willing to join a crowd tearing someone down than one lifting others up? He notes that modern culture is rich in opposition but poor in vision—people can articulate what they are against, but few can say what they are for. This tendency mirrors the Gospel narrative in which Jesus is turned into an enemy to unify a crowd. Pilate, lacking conviction, chooses the path of least resistance, allowing injustice for the sake of appeasement. How often do we do the same? He calls us to be the first crowd—the one that welcomes, that celebrates, that lifts up. Jesus’ ministry was defined not by condemnation but by compassion. He debated the Pharisees directly, never resorting to slander or manipulation. When addressing the people, Jesus didn’t tell them whom to hate; He told them what to do—feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the imprisoned. The Gospel isn’t a manifesto of opposition, but a call to action and love. Father Pat reminds us that the work of the Church is not merely to resist evil, but to build good—to uplift those who uplift others. In the end, Father Pat’s message is a challenge to examine our place in the story. We are not just spectators to Jesus’ Passion; we are participants in the ongoing story of how God’s love is welcomed or rejected in the world. Are we passive observers, or do we add our voice to the crowd? And if so, what is our cry—“Hosanna” or “Crucify him”? The liturgy invites us into this tension not to confuse us, but to awaken us—to show us ourselves. It asks us not only to understand the Passion of Christ, but to live out the compassion of Christ in a world desperate for grace, justice, and solidarity.
