And, uh, even with the Stations of the Cross, I've started this, uh, kind of tradition we've done it three years in a row where we just focus on different stations. I mean, we do the whole stations, but we'll stop for extended times on certain ones because the story, you know, most of the Gospels we do homilies. This one is the foundation of our faith. We preach on it 52 weeks a year from different angles. It is our core story. But I want to take a moment to expand something I started at the Stations of the Cross today that we don't always catch on to in the suffering of Jesus on the cross, which is it is not the suffering that is special. There are dozens at least of people up and down the road being crucified along with him on any given day during the, you know, during the the occupation of that area of the world. And so sometimes you don't think, oh, it is it is the worst death. You know, we hear the story of two people, the criminals on either side. So what makes this when we say no one has suffered like Jesus? It's not the suffering. It's the willingness. And we don't always I think we don't always get our head around that. I'm I'm very much in favor. There are two, I think, larger strands of theology in our church, atonement theology and really incarnational theology. Atonement is the old Jesus must suffer a certain amount to pay God for our sins. And I've always struggled with that, because while it makes Jesus quite the hero, it doesn't reflect well on God. And we don't want to admit it. But when someone says Jesus saved us from, well, the wrath of what did Jesus save us from? Is it the wrath of God? And if you just take the scripture a little too literally, is he still trying to get over a piece of fruit? I struggle with atonement theology. Incarnational theology says Jesus came down as if there's a little prayer I say at the altar every time I say mass. Sometimes at daily mass, I'll say it out loud. It's what they call a sort of OJ prayer, it's said under the voice, it's a whisper. And it's when you're pouring the wine, the water into the wine, that little drop, and it's, you know, through the mingling of this water and wine that we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. God's desire to be close to us demands that he become human, because there's no other way to be closer to us. It can't be physically closer. God is as close as the air. There's a rather, it's graphic, but there's something about it that I think speaks to me. There's a saying out of the mysticism of Islam that says God is as close as your journey ever. Right there where you can feel the heart of me. God is not distant. So how does God get closer to us? Well, what the theologians are trying to say is there are some parts of humanity that, even though we say nothing is beyond God, are beyond God. Because God can't know doubt. God knows what's going to happen tomorrow. God is not doubting anything. God doesn't understand, at an experiential level, not knowing what's going to happen tomorrow, worrying. We worry about our futures. We worry about our children's futures. God already sees where we're all going to be long after this life is over. So when we go to God and we say, you know, I've got all these worries, we want to think, well, God will be compassionate, but God's never had these worries. I don't think God has worried a rent bill in years. How do we, how do we relate to that God? God empties, this is the language they use, he empties himself, this is the second person in the Trinity, empties himself of his divinity and literally experiences humanity, which means he'll have to be born. He'll have to live completely dependent on others, at least for the first several years of his life. You've heard me say often, many of us have blocked it out. No one here survived the first 10 years of their life based on your amazing abilities. We start this life as charity cases. Our parents do everything for us. No one holds a baby in their hands and goes, what does it do? I don't get it. No, your heart is there, but you know, where we can see God holding us that way, we can understand that Jesus has to become that helpless child. He has to be affected in personality by his parents. I always think about that. People talk about all these reflections about Mary, but I think that he's not the most important one, possibly just, but we don't hear about him later in life. There is arguably, there is no human who has had more effect on God than Mary. You know, raise a child, they'll tell you the effect you've had on them. Because if Jesus is sort of a, if we think of Jesus as sort of Teflon, oh no, he's God, nothing they did will actually really affect him because he's God, then he was never really human. The mystery of the incarnation is he's really human. He's really formed by Mary and Joseph. He's really affected by his friends. He's really going to have to live and if humanity turns on him, there's nothing you can do. You know, people who end up receiving a death amnesty, sometimes, you know, we hope there's never a mistake, but it's never really about whether they're innocent or guilty, it's about whether the community is on their side or not. Comes down to 12 people. If the community turns against you, it's bad. You know, we all depend on each other, we're interdependent in ways we don't know. And the more of that we experience, the closer we are to building the kingdom of God. So Jesus has to go through all this and he has to go through it until the day he dies. The question you can always throw out to an atonement theologian and either they just won't think about it, they'll say absolutely or whatever, they won't really want to get into it because it's very disturbing to them is, so if the crowd had been better people, if the crowd had converted and Jesus had died an old man in bed, would we be saved? And if we say no, then Jesus saved us, but so did that awful crowd of sinners. There are things about it that should disturb us. But Incarnational says, did Jesus, you know, were we saved through Jesus dying on the cross? Yes, because that's how he died. He could have died anyway, but he had to ride the human ride and be affected by his community and when they turned against him, he, you know, he ends up in a horrible place. The love of Jesus is the love that doesn't say to God at that moment, I'm done, call off the experiment, I don't care. Because if he doesn't hold out until death, he never really lived a human life. He has to, he has to hang on until the end. Why? For the sake of the very people hurting him. That's why he has a pain like no other. Not because the pain is different, but because there's a voluntary aspect. It's a willingness, a willingness to go through things for others. And it's the heart of every one of his teachings. It's the opening of his preaching, teaching people that others are good, blessed, blessed to the poor, blessed to all the people you think aren't blessed, clear to his very last word to anyone, which is to John and Mary, take care of each other, be for each other everything I was for you. Everything he brings is a pure goodness of humanity. And that's what we try to look for. We know that we will never do it as perfectly. When we hear that Old Testament reading about, well, so and so was, they were perfect. They were perfect. In all those scriptures, words like good, bad, better, worse, perfect, they don't really mean anything unless you say, perfect at what? And whenever you hear about the prophets who are claiming the word of God and they end up thrown in a cistern, they're perfect at everything but public relations. You just can't say. People always say, well, are they good at what? And Jesus comes here to be good at humaning. Not a word. Don't let them make it into what I'm doing this time. You know, at being human, that's what he comes to do because he's going to take that experience and God will still be God, but God will now be God who has known the pain of loss, who has known the doubt of not knowing what's going on. I love that we have Matthew's gospel and Luke's battling over this, where Luke says, he says, forgive them, they know not what they do. Matthew has, why have you abandoned me? The doubt and the love are right there together. I think most people will say, you know, when you love people, you trust them completely. I think real love loves in the presence of doubt because no one can know anyone perfectly. No one can know anyone perfectly and for some people, that keeps them from committing for their whole life and for others, that's what makes human commitment worth it. If God could come down and tell you what someone was going to do for the next 50 years before you decided to marry them, it'd be kind of a cheap vow. It really would. It's connecting to someone and not quite knowing and trusting enough, not perfectly, but that moment when Jesus decides he could get out of it at any moment, he can always, and we have to believe Jesus has the divine right to pull the plug on this human experiment and he takes it to the end and when he dies, it is complete. He has lived a completely human life and in his death, we are saved. Not because it was more important than the rest of the life, but because, you know, until the finish line, he's crossed and kind of a human life, maybe a human life. You'll notice every miracle Jesus has ever done in the Gospels, you know, that's where you go, well, yeah, he's still got some God power and a friend of mine in seminary used to call it the Jesus rule. How does he balance that? He can use the power of God, but he's got to live a human life so he can use the power of God for anyone but himself. Show me the miracle where Jesus helps Jesus, you know, he heals someone else, he brings someone else to a new place, he, you know, helps people to heal in ways they can't imagine. He brings people back to life. He himself, you know, we don't hear the stories, but if Jesus got a cold, he was probably down for five days. He was human. And he didn't use his divinity to create a hybrid life, he lived a human life. And the one thing about humans is they need other humans. Our salvation is that there is a human in the Trinity. And I want each of you to think, if God said to you tomorrow you're going to heaven, who would you like to see there? Yeah, you'd probably start with family. The better question is, how many of you, especially parents, could not truly enter into the experience of heaven if you had children that you thought were in hell? So for you to be in heaven, they have to be in heaven. And for them to be in heaven, even their friends, I know you don't approve of them, but their friends have to be in heaven. And then their friends' children. And in other words, the reason as Catholics we believe we are saved in community is because we can trace that community back to Jesus. And every person who needs their loved ones in heaven to truly experience heaven creates this natural pull of grace. Tonight we celebrate a horrific moment. A horrific moment in which we can look at the suffering and we need to to see the severity of the situation, but that is not tonight. Tonight is to look through the suffering to the person willing to suffer. For you and for me. For those we love and even for those we have not yet learned to love.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 11.0, "text": " I think it's hard for us to really wrap our minds around WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:11.000 I think it's hard for us to really wrap our minds around all that is taking place in that 00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:12.000 reading. 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:17.639 And, uh, even with the Stations of the Cross, I've started this, uh, kind of tradition we've 00:00:17.639 --> 00:00:21.000 done it three years in a row where we just focus on different stations. 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:27.319 I mean, we do the whole stations, but we'll stop for extended times on certain ones because 00:00:27.319 --> 00:00:33.240 the story, you know, most of the Gospels we do homilies. 00:00:33.240 --> 00:00:37.040 This one is the foundation of our faith. 00:00:37.040 --> 00:00:41.959 We preach on it 52 weeks a year from different angles. 00:00:41.959 --> 00:00:43.880 It is our core story. 00:00:43.880 --> 00:00:51.759 But I want to take a moment to expand something I started at the Stations of the Cross today 00:00:51.759 --> 00:01:03.520 that we don't always catch on to in the suffering of Jesus on the cross, which is it is not 00:01:03.520 --> 00:01:06.680 the suffering that is special. 00:01:06.680 --> 00:01:13.800 There are dozens at least of people up and down the road being crucified along with him 00:01:13.800 --> 00:01:22.319 on any given day during the, you know, during the the occupation of that area of the world. 00:01:22.319 --> 00:01:28.839 And so sometimes you don't think, oh, it is it is the worst death. 00:01:28.839 --> 00:01:33.239 You know, we hear the story of two people, the criminals on either side. 00:01:33.239 --> 00:01:37.680 So what makes this when we say no one has suffered like Jesus? 00:01:37.680 --> 00:01:40.199 It's not the suffering. 00:01:40.199 --> 00:01:43.160 It's the willingness. 00:01:43.160 --> 00:01:46.760 And we don't always I think we don't always get our head around that. 00:01:46.760 --> 00:01:49.480 I'm I'm very much in favor. 00:01:49.480 --> 00:01:55.760 There are two, I think, larger strands of theology in our church, atonement theology 00:01:55.760 --> 00:02:00.279 and really incarnational theology. 00:02:00.279 --> 00:02:09.800 Atonement is the old Jesus must suffer a certain amount to pay God for our sins. 00:02:09.800 --> 00:02:16.679 And I've always struggled with that, because while it makes Jesus quite the hero, it doesn't 00:02:16.679 --> 00:02:19.880 reflect well on God. 00:02:19.880 --> 00:02:22.279 And we don't want to admit it. 00:02:22.279 --> 00:02:32.119 But when someone says Jesus saved us from, well, the wrath of what did Jesus save us 00:02:32.119 --> 00:02:33.679 from? 00:02:33.679 --> 00:02:35.960 Is it the wrath of God? 00:02:35.960 --> 00:02:41.520 And if you just take the scripture a little too literally, is he still trying to get over 00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:46.320 a piece of fruit? 00:02:46.320 --> 00:02:51.080 I struggle with atonement theology. 00:02:51.080 --> 00:02:56.960 Incarnational theology says Jesus came down as if there's a little prayer I say at the 00:02:56.960 --> 00:03:01.679 altar every time I say mass. 00:03:01.679 --> 00:03:04.119 Sometimes at daily mass, I'll say it out loud. 00:03:04.279 --> 00:03:08.720 It's what they call a sort of OJ prayer, it's said under the voice, it's a whisper. 00:03:08.720 --> 00:03:13.399 And it's when you're pouring the wine, the water into the wine, that little drop, and 00:03:13.399 --> 00:03:19.839 it's, you know, through the mingling of this water and wine that we come to share in the 00:03:19.839 --> 00:03:26.000 divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. 00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:36.360 God's desire to be close to us demands that he become human, because there's no other 00:03:36.360 --> 00:03:38.279 way to be closer to us. 00:03:38.279 --> 00:03:39.880 It can't be physically closer. 00:03:39.880 --> 00:03:42.759 God is as close as the air. 00:03:42.759 --> 00:03:49.160 There's a rather, it's graphic, but there's something about it that I think speaks to 00:03:49.160 --> 00:03:50.160 me. 00:03:50.160 --> 00:03:55.360 There's a saying out of the mysticism of Islam that says God is as close as your journey 00:03:55.440 --> 00:03:57.440 ever. 00:03:57.440 --> 00:04:00.360 Right there where you can feel the heart of me. 00:04:00.360 --> 00:04:02.399 God is not distant. 00:04:02.399 --> 00:04:05.800 So how does God get closer to us? 00:04:05.800 --> 00:04:11.240 Well, what the theologians are trying to say is there are some parts of humanity that, 00:04:11.240 --> 00:04:17.079 even though we say nothing is beyond God, are beyond God. 00:04:17.079 --> 00:04:21.720 Because God can't know doubt. 00:04:21.720 --> 00:04:23.799 God knows what's going to happen tomorrow. 00:04:23.799 --> 00:04:27.239 God is not doubting anything. 00:04:27.239 --> 00:04:33.480 God doesn't understand, at an experiential level, not knowing what's going to happen 00:04:33.480 --> 00:04:37.040 tomorrow, worrying. 00:04:37.040 --> 00:04:38.279 We worry about our futures. 00:04:38.279 --> 00:04:40.720 We worry about our children's futures. 00:04:40.720 --> 00:04:45.799 God already sees where we're all going to be long after this life is over. 00:04:45.799 --> 00:04:51.640 So when we go to God and we say, you know, I've got all these worries, we want to think, 00:04:51.640 --> 00:04:56.559 well, God will be compassionate, but God's never had these worries. 00:04:56.559 --> 00:05:01.720 I don't think God has worried a rent bill in years. 00:05:01.720 --> 00:05:04.679 How do we, how do we relate to that God? 00:05:04.679 --> 00:05:10.399 God empties, this is the language they use, he empties himself, this is the second person 00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:17.799 in the Trinity, empties himself of his divinity and literally experiences humanity, which 00:05:17.799 --> 00:05:20.920 means he'll have to be born. 00:05:20.920 --> 00:05:28.320 He'll have to live completely dependent on others, at least for the first several years 00:05:28.320 --> 00:05:29.320 of his life. 00:05:29.320 --> 00:05:33.720 You've heard me say often, many of us have blocked it out. 00:05:33.720 --> 00:05:42.720 No one here survived the first 10 years of their life based on your amazing abilities. 00:05:42.720 --> 00:05:47.279 We start this life as charity cases. 00:05:47.279 --> 00:05:51.040 Our parents do everything for us. 00:05:51.040 --> 00:05:56.440 No one holds a baby in their hands and goes, what does it do? 00:05:56.440 --> 00:05:57.880 I don't get it. 00:05:57.880 --> 00:06:05.839 No, your heart is there, but you know, where we can see God holding us that way, we can 00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:10.640 understand that Jesus has to become that helpless child. 00:06:10.640 --> 00:06:15.679 He has to be affected in personality by his parents. 00:06:15.679 --> 00:06:17.239 I always think about that. 00:06:17.239 --> 00:06:21.440 People talk about all these reflections about Mary, but I think that he's not the most important 00:06:21.440 --> 00:06:26.320 one, possibly just, but we don't hear about him later in life. 00:06:26.320 --> 00:06:34.920 There is arguably, there is no human who has had more effect on God than Mary. 00:06:34.920 --> 00:06:44.200 You know, raise a child, they'll tell you the effect you've had on them. 00:06:44.200 --> 00:06:50.079 Because if Jesus is sort of a, if we think of Jesus as sort of Teflon, oh no, he's God, 00:06:50.079 --> 00:06:54.359 nothing they did will actually really affect him because he's God, then he was never really 00:06:54.359 --> 00:06:55.359 human. 00:06:55.359 --> 00:07:01.160 The mystery of the incarnation is he's really human. 00:07:01.160 --> 00:07:04.480 He's really formed by Mary and Joseph. 00:07:04.480 --> 00:07:07.799 He's really affected by his friends. 00:07:07.839 --> 00:07:16.440 He's really going to have to live and if humanity turns on him, there's nothing you can do. 00:07:16.440 --> 00:07:25.720 You know, people who end up receiving a death amnesty, sometimes, you know, we hope there's 00:07:25.720 --> 00:07:29.799 never a mistake, but it's never really about whether they're innocent or guilty, it's about 00:07:29.799 --> 00:07:33.640 whether the community is on their side or not. 00:07:33.640 --> 00:07:36.519 Comes down to 12 people. 00:07:36.519 --> 00:07:41.119 If the community turns against you, it's bad. 00:07:41.119 --> 00:07:49.040 You know, we all depend on each other, we're interdependent in ways we don't know. 00:07:49.040 --> 00:07:54.880 And the more of that we experience, the closer we are to building the kingdom of God. 00:07:54.880 --> 00:08:00.579 So Jesus has to go through all this and he has to go through it until the day he dies. 00:08:00.579 --> 00:08:06.160 The question you can always throw out to an atonement theologian and either they just 00:08:06.160 --> 00:08:09.720 won't think about it, they'll say absolutely or whatever, they won't really want to get 00:08:09.720 --> 00:08:16.640 into it because it's very disturbing to them is, so if the crowd had been better people, 00:08:16.640 --> 00:08:25.839 if the crowd had converted and Jesus had died an old man in bed, would we be saved? 00:08:25.839 --> 00:08:36.479 And if we say no, then Jesus saved us, but so did that awful crowd of sinners. 00:08:36.479 --> 00:08:39.799 There are things about it that should disturb us. 00:08:39.799 --> 00:08:45.359 But Incarnational says, did Jesus, you know, were we saved through Jesus dying on the cross? 00:08:45.359 --> 00:08:46.520 Yes, because that's how he died. 00:08:46.520 --> 00:08:54.159 He could have died anyway, but he had to ride the human ride and be affected by his community 00:08:54.359 --> 00:09:01.239 and when they turned against him, he, you know, he ends up in a horrible place. 00:09:01.239 --> 00:09:08.080 The love of Jesus is the love that doesn't say to God at that moment, I'm done, call 00:09:08.080 --> 00:09:12.599 off the experiment, I don't care. 00:09:12.599 --> 00:09:19.880 Because if he doesn't hold out until death, he never really lived a human life. 00:09:19.880 --> 00:09:23.479 He has to, he has to hang on until the end. 00:09:23.479 --> 00:09:24.479 Why? 00:09:24.479 --> 00:09:28.039 For the sake of the very people hurting him. 00:09:28.039 --> 00:09:31.760 That's why he has a pain like no other. 00:09:31.760 --> 00:09:38.039 Not because the pain is different, but because there's a voluntary aspect. 00:09:38.039 --> 00:09:45.080 It's a willingness, a willingness to go through things for others. 00:09:45.080 --> 00:09:48.520 And it's the heart of every one of his teachings. 00:09:48.559 --> 00:09:55.559 It's the opening of his preaching, teaching people that others are good, blessed, blessed 00:09:55.559 --> 00:10:00.760 to the poor, blessed to all the people you think aren't blessed, clear to his very last 00:10:00.760 --> 00:10:07.400 word to anyone, which is to John and Mary, take care of each other, be for each other 00:10:07.400 --> 00:10:11.599 everything I was for you. 00:10:11.599 --> 00:10:19.039 Everything he brings is a pure goodness of humanity. 00:10:19.039 --> 00:10:20.280 And that's what we try to look for. 00:10:20.280 --> 00:10:24.200 We know that we will never do it as perfectly. 00:10:24.200 --> 00:10:29.239 When we hear that Old Testament reading about, well, so and so was, they were perfect. 00:10:29.239 --> 00:10:31.679 They were perfect. 00:10:31.679 --> 00:10:36.880 In all those scriptures, words like good, bad, better, worse, perfect, they don't really 00:10:36.880 --> 00:10:42.239 mean anything unless you say, perfect at what? 00:10:42.239 --> 00:10:46.760 And whenever you hear about the prophets who are claiming the word of God and they end 00:10:46.760 --> 00:10:52.479 up thrown in a cistern, they're perfect at everything but public relations. 00:10:52.479 --> 00:10:56.159 You just can't say. 00:10:56.159 --> 00:11:00.760 People always say, well, are they good at what? 00:11:00.760 --> 00:11:06.640 And Jesus comes here to be good at humaning. 00:11:06.640 --> 00:11:07.640 Not a word. 00:11:07.640 --> 00:11:10.679 Don't let them make it into what I'm doing this time. 00:11:10.679 --> 00:11:18.000 You know, at being human, that's what he comes to do because he's going to take that experience 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:26.960 and God will still be God, but God will now be God who has known the pain of loss, who 00:11:26.960 --> 00:11:30.919 has known the doubt of not knowing what's going on. 00:11:30.919 --> 00:11:37.039 I love that we have Matthew's gospel and Luke's battling over this, where Luke says, 00:11:37.039 --> 00:11:40.000 he says, forgive them, they know not what they do. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:44.359 Matthew has, why have you abandoned me? 00:11:44.359 --> 00:11:48.880 The doubt and the love are right there together. 00:11:48.880 --> 00:11:54.119 I think most people will say, you know, when you love people, you trust them completely. 00:11:54.119 --> 00:12:04.640 I think real love loves in the presence of doubt because no one can know anyone perfectly. 00:12:04.640 --> 00:12:09.799 No one can know anyone perfectly and for some people, that keeps them from committing for 00:12:09.799 --> 00:12:19.159 their whole life and for others, that's what makes human commitment worth it. 00:12:19.159 --> 00:12:23.000 If God could come down and tell you what someone was going to do for the next 50 years before 00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:28.159 you decided to marry them, it'd be kind of a cheap vow. 00:12:28.159 --> 00:12:31.599 It really would. 00:12:31.599 --> 00:12:39.840 It's connecting to someone and not quite knowing and trusting enough, not perfectly, but that 00:12:39.840 --> 00:12:46.200 moment when Jesus decides he could get out of it at any moment, he can always, and we 00:12:46.200 --> 00:12:55.840 have to believe Jesus has the divine right to pull the plug on this human experiment 00:12:55.840 --> 00:13:00.320 and he takes it to the end and when he dies, it is complete. 00:13:00.320 --> 00:13:05.080 He has lived a completely human life and in his death, we are saved. 00:13:05.080 --> 00:13:10.280 Not because it was more important than the rest of the life, but because, you know, until 00:13:10.280 --> 00:13:17.039 the finish line, he's crossed and kind of a human life, maybe a human life. 00:13:17.039 --> 00:13:21.840 You'll notice every miracle Jesus has ever done in the Gospels, you know, that's where 00:13:21.840 --> 00:13:26.359 you go, well, yeah, he's still got some God power and a friend of mine in seminary used 00:13:26.359 --> 00:13:29.679 to call it the Jesus rule. 00:13:29.679 --> 00:13:31.080 How does he balance that? 00:13:31.080 --> 00:13:35.479 He can use the power of God, but he's got to live a human life so he can use the power 00:13:35.479 --> 00:13:39.320 of God for anyone but himself. 00:13:39.359 --> 00:13:48.760 Show me the miracle where Jesus helps Jesus, you know, he heals someone else, he brings 00:13:48.760 --> 00:13:55.719 someone else to a new place, he, you know, helps people to heal in ways they can't imagine. 00:13:55.719 --> 00:13:59.599 He brings people back to life. 00:13:59.599 --> 00:14:07.119 He himself, you know, we don't hear the stories, but if Jesus got a cold, he was probably down 00:14:07.119 --> 00:14:09.760 for five days. 00:14:09.760 --> 00:14:11.840 He was human. 00:14:11.840 --> 00:14:19.559 And he didn't use his divinity to create a hybrid life, he lived a human life. 00:14:19.559 --> 00:14:23.919 And the one thing about humans is they need other humans. 00:14:23.919 --> 00:14:30.400 Our salvation is that there is a human in the Trinity. 00:14:30.400 --> 00:14:39.840 And I want each of you to think, if God said to you tomorrow you're going to heaven, who 00:14:39.840 --> 00:14:41.640 would you like to see there? 00:14:41.640 --> 00:14:45.760 Yeah, you'd probably start with family. 00:14:45.760 --> 00:14:53.960 The better question is, how many of you, especially parents, could not truly enter into the experience 00:14:53.960 --> 00:14:59.320 of heaven if you had children that you thought were in hell? 00:14:59.320 --> 00:15:02.799 So for you to be in heaven, they have to be in heaven. 00:15:02.799 --> 00:15:06.000 And for them to be in heaven, even their friends, I know you don't approve of them, but their 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:09.200 friends have to be in heaven. 00:15:09.200 --> 00:15:10.840 And then their friends' children. 00:15:10.840 --> 00:15:16.320 And in other words, the reason as Catholics we believe we are saved in community is because 00:15:16.320 --> 00:15:20.039 we can trace that community back to Jesus. 00:15:20.039 --> 00:15:26.799 And every person who needs their loved ones in heaven to truly experience heaven creates 00:15:26.799 --> 00:15:31.080 this natural pull of grace. 00:15:31.080 --> 00:15:36.479 Tonight we celebrate a horrific moment. 00:15:36.479 --> 00:15:42.320 A horrific moment in which we can look at the suffering and we need to to see the severity 00:15:42.320 --> 00:15:45.919 of the situation, but that is not tonight. 00:15:45.919 --> 00:15:53.960 Tonight is to look through the suffering to the person willing to suffer. 00:15:53.960 --> 00:15:56.919 For you and for me. 00:15:56.919 --> 00:16:01.960 For those we love and even for those we have not yet learned to love.

Father Pat’s message centers on the idea that what makes Jesus’ Passion and death unique is not the level of physical suffering he endured, but the radical, self-emptying willingness with which he embraced it. His crucifixion does not stand out because of its brutality—many were crucified during that time—but because it was freely chosen, motivated by divine love and solidarity with humanity. Father Pat challenges a transactional atonement theology that portrays God as wrathful and needing satisfaction, instead emphasizing an incarnational theology where God in Christ fully enters into human experience—not just in death, but in life, relationship, vulnerability, and dependence. Jesus' mission was to live a fully human life, shaped by others, subject to doubt and suffering, yet steadfast in self-giving love. Through this full human experience, including death, God becomes not only divinely transcendent but intimately immanent—one who knows human sorrow, pain, and love from within. Salvation, then, is not a legalistic exchange, but a relational, communal reality that draws all creation into divine intimacy through the humanity of Christ. Father Pat provides a profound meditation on the Passion of Christ, not as a spectacle of suffering, but as the climax of the Incarnation—God’s total immersion into the human condition. He begins by dismantling a common assumption: that Jesus’ suffering is unique because of its intensity. Instead, he argues, crucifixion was tragically common in Jesus' time, and others endured similar physical pain. What sets Jesus apart is his volitional embrace of suffering—not for personal gain, but for love of others. This leads Father Pat to critique atonement theology, which views the crucifixion in legalistic terms, as Jesus paying a debt or satisfying divine wrath. This framework, he argues, makes God appear more like an angry judge than a loving Father and undermines the relational character of divine love. In contrast, Father Pat advocates for an incarnational theology, which sees the Incarnation—God becoming human—as the central revelation of divine love. He reflects on the vulnerability of God entering human life through Jesus: becoming a helpless infant, shaped by Mary and Joseph, experiencing doubt, dependence, community, and ultimately betrayal and death. This vulnerability is not a performance but a real participation in what it means to be human. In Jesus, God does not merely appear as human; God becomes human. This means Jesus had to walk through life fully—dependent, influenced, limited, and fragile—because anything less would not be a true incarnation. Father Pat emphasizes that Jesus’ miracles were always for others, never for himself. He accepted the limitations of humanity, even to the point of death, because only by living a fully human life—including its pain, confusion, and loss—could he redeem it from within. This human life is not just a means to an end; it is the very site of salvation. Jesus’ faithfulness unto death is the ultimate act of love—not because it was demanded by a wrathful God, but because it was the deepest expression of God’s solidarity with humanity. He then explores the communal dimension of salvation. Drawing from Catholic theology, he insists that salvation is not merely individualistic. Instead, it is relational and collective, because love binds people together. Father Pat calls attention to the way we desire our loved ones to be with us in heaven—and how that desire cascades outward to include their loved ones, and so on. This web of love reflects the communal nature of salvation and mirrors the Trinitarian life itself, which is a community of love. Because Jesus, a human, is now forever part of the Trinity, humanity is drawn into divine life not individually, but together. In conclusion, Father Pat urges his listeners to look beyond the physical suffering of Christ and see the person willing to suffer. The cross is not merely a site of punishment, but a revelation of divine love that holds firm even in the face of human betrayal. That love is not abstract—it is embodied, vulnerable, and enduring. It calls us not only to gratitude but to imitation: to love as Christ loved, with a willingness to be affected, to suffer with, and to live for others. This is the heart of the faith and the source of our hope.
