After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was gone in, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were reading from the Gospel. Luke. At daybreak on the first day of the week, the women who had come from Galilee with Jesus took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were hustling over this, behold, two men in dazzling garments appeared to them. They were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground. They said to them, why do you seek the living one among the dead? He is not here, but he has been raised. Remembering what he said to you while he was still in Galilee, that the son of man must be handed over to sinners and be crucified and rise on the third day. Remember his words. Then they returned from the tomb and announced all these things to the 11 and to all the others. The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna and Mary, the mother of James. The others who had come with them also told this to the apostles, but their stories seemed like nonsense and they did not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb, bent down and saw the burial cloths alone. Then he went home amazed at what had happened. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. I was here on this night as we gather, 2,000 some-odd, around 2,000 years later. If we really contemplate the story, faith is an amazing thing because the story on its own still seems like nonsense. Everyone in this room, if you're over a certain age, and I'm probably pretty guy age, with parents or grandparents who've already experienced death, and my suspicion is a few days after the death, if one of your siblings came back and said, Grandma's alive again, you'd be like, okay, so what are we drinking tonight? You kind of have to wonder. And so, what if you do, you know, faith should always have the sense, I mean, the word nonsense sounds a little dismissive, but it is outside of what is sensible. It is beyond sense. If it were not, it would be knowledge, and there would, you know, until recently, science would have been science. We would have just, you know, no one ever comes and says, well, now, they had two and they have two more, and now they have four. I don't know, who said, no, two plus two is four. No faith, no faith needed. So, faith should always fly a little bit in the face of what seems reasonable. Now, we have to be careful with that. There are three kinds of statements in faith. There are rational, which some have surveyed and some kinds are, you know, science, other studies, but there's rational and there's irrational. We understand those, and then there's a whole slew of what we call non-rationals. So if I tell you that two plus two is four, no matter what language I use, if I show you this and this, and I get to there, I've been practicing since then. That makes sense. The human mind is built, it has structures that catch that, and not only can we all agree on it, we build calculus on it. That is a rational thought. Now, if I, no matter what language I use, if I try and take these and I keep getting to there, your mind will not be able to grab onto it, that is irrational. So our faith should be a dance between non-rational and rational. It should never go into irrational. But it works like this. What is non-rational? Non-rational is when I say two plus two is good. Reason won't get you there, but reason won't disprove it. The existence of God, you know, there's a thing in science, in religion we call it myth, and a lot of people get, myth gets a bad rap, I love myth. Myth is a story that talks about why, why things happen, and one myth can be as good as another, and the myth is not always that right. You know, when you take great events in history, it can be the Inquisitions, it could be Nazi Germany, it could be the assassination of Martin Luther King, these stories happened, they're factual, but they also become mythic. You know, Watergate, it became mythic the day that thirty years later someone could say, I am telling the truth, and you do want to binge. It becomes part of our culture. It takes on mythic dimension, even if it's true. In the same way, there are true stories that are not important, that will never become mythic. I bought a chicken this week at the store that is factual, and I don't think it will ever shape culture, except for that chicken. So you know, I think when someone says myth, we all go, this is not a myth, if it's not a myth, it's of no importance. It can be a myth, it can be a historical myth, myth means it took on that meaning. These, all of our myths, when someone says myth, that is religion's way of saying theory. Science calls it a theory and half the time, some theories are just that, they're the best story to explain everything we see. I've always contended that the theory of attraction, if you put, all we know is if you put a particle here and a particle here, for some reason they work together. We call that the theory of attraction. I assume that was written by a lonely physicist. Attraction, who knows? We don't, you know, years from now they go, oh, did you know there was a curvature of a space and for a reason it had nothing to do with all of it. Are they attracted or are they propelled from emptiness, we do not know. But we pick a theory, we stick with it. Religion, when someone looks at the big bang theory, did it happen? No one knows. But as the story goes, it explains where we're at, so does God, that's non-rational when you have a third choice and you have to choose. Now you can actually choose both of those, you know, God can create a big bang, but the thing is there is nothing, anyone who comes out to and says, I can logically prove God, get a chair and be ready to be disappointed, because that's not fake. What they're really saying is, I can make it scientific. And the sadness there is, if it's scientific, it matters, and if it's religion, it doesn't. No, no, I'm fine with a table. Faith works in areas science can't, science works in areas faith can't. You know, I have great faith in God that I owe to my spiritual life. I follow the recipe when I'm cooking. You can not follow the recipe and pray, but just don't have food for dinner. It's one of those, so in this night, we get this money book out to us, it all vibes nonsense. And we kind of go, what was wrong with them? No, but what's marvelous is that they get past that. They find that, you know, all love, anyone here, and granted, I'm preaching from the other side of the fence, but I don't care. Anyone here who is in love with someone, it is not based on a single fact. And it doesn't make it any less real. As a matter of fact, it usually makes it more real if we're talking about emotions in love. And if you want someone who is in love with someone based on facts, it's usually the amount of money in their bank account. There's a brat, a love, we don't know. Someone will say, oh, why that person, I don't know, I mean, what is it, why do you attract them about? What do they want to hear? Oh, their left eyebrow. And I saw the left eyebrow. It's a mystery. And here we have this great story of mystery, and that's why we begin in the dark. It's not just that we're sitting in the tomb. We begin in the dark because we always start in mystery. Now, when I sit there, there has to be a dance between rational and non-rational. God exists. Well, that's a non-rational, because number one, we don't always mean the same thing, and if someone could make the argument, you can't logic someone into it. And if God is love, you can't logic someone into that. God could be hatred and just very incompetent at it. These are things you go, well, you're right, these are things we believe, but once you know your fundamentals, which are always that sort of choice, I choose to believe in God, I choose to believe in community, I choose to believe that love is better than hate, I choose to believe that we're better together. Once we choose our faith and trust the people who are part of our faith, then we have to get into something rational. For example, I cannot say God is all-loving and all-powerful, but there are some of you that he just can't put up with anymore and he says, torture your brain. Now I get an irrational, you know, because there is no one, everyone says, well, you know, a parent sometimes has to correct someone. I've never met a parent who said, I needed to correct my child, I'm going to permanently harm them, and there'll be no hope of them ever getting out of it. So we know there's those issues, and that's where we're from. Oh, there's all this wonder and mystery. We have two people come into the faith tonight, and it's coming into a community. It's belief in a scripture that was written and accepted by a community, not just written by communities, but community decided, Gospel of Luke, it's going in, Josephus' treatise on the state of Rome, you know, Gospel of Thomas, everyone said, why did that not make it in? It was written about a century too late. There are all these, why did that go in, why did that, who decided which goes in? And when we say something is scripture, is it because it was inspired when it was written or because it was inspired when it was chosen, or who got inspired, how many levels, and then which friend says, we are here because we believe that we experience God more deeply in the gathering of community, that we pull apart our faith, and we kind ourselves, raiding into the mystery. I've watched this week, as in Rome, Palm Sunday, they were singing, goes on, last night, watching as the people came forward to cross, so many people came with deep grief. And these are things we bring to our faith, to our shared experience of the world, which for us, points to God, reasonably, not rationally, but reasonably. And so when we watch people come to faith this night, not that they come to faith this night, but they make that ritual expression of joining us. They become part of our dialogue. We're going to hear so much about resurrection, but new life happens in so many ways. Certainly we're looking at this miracle of from death into new life, but every change you have ever had in your life is the same. We die as something, and we rise as something else. Anyone who is married, God willing, has died to single life. You left that in mind. You know, when you have young children, you have died to sleep. Your life changes, you're now a parent, and you're not just ever the same. I have a friend who's actually here tonight, who told me, she said, you know, I expected children to see a change in my life, but becoming a grandparent was a game-changer at its time. And God says, and your pieces, and your change, as you're confided, whether you die but as old and embrace what's coming. Joseph Campbell used to say, if we can just let go of the life we've been clinging to, then we can find the life that's been waiting for us. It's out there. God invites us in, and so on, and we hear these miracle stories. And they are very pointed, creation, the most ignored miracle in our lives. Most of us were younger than half, but creation in every moment. As a matter of fact, most people don't really experience creation until they have a child. When they hold that base in their hands, then they start to understand creation. I mean, it sounds weird to say, but you really weren't there for your own, and now you just weren't there. When we see a baby come into the world, that's the creation story all over again. When we see people who, whether it's addiction or illness, whether it's struggles with family, when they find a way out, that's the exodus story. We are all enslaved to so many things. We're enslaved to our habits, and so the exodus story wants to show us that there is freedom, and then we get the Isaiah, where God keeps saying, come to the water. If you're thirsty, come to the water, and that's what we'll do tonight. And certainly in these images, as we do it every Easter, we ask ourselves, what's the new life? We're going to be nagged on this for the next few weeks. You know, Lent, I think for most people, and we do different things, but Lent has always been about trying to overcome a weakness. You know, we give up something, we prove that we can, we get charged. I think Easter should be the opposite. If we weren't getting rid of a weakness, whether we succeeded or not, I think Easter should be learning to lean into our strengths. We don't think as much about that in our religion. We think, you know, what's different for me from, you know, from six weeks ago when I started, like, well, there's less meat in my system, and what I can take away. Or sometimes, like, I've got to work on my weaknesses. You always hear people, well, you know, I've got to work on this, I've got to work on that. What's your strength? Because you should be working on, this is only they're helping a strength. I have a teacher who used to always say that, she'd say, you know, Barishtakaw's success was not that he fixed his weakness, which was tap dancing. There were kinds of dances he would say, I'm no good at that style. I'm no good at that style, and people didn't say, huh, not a very well-rounded dancer. It didn't hurt his financial bottom line in the end. I think sometimes we need to stay, look, let's figure out what we need to move away from. But we also, God calls us to do life, and that means figuring out the gifts and leaning in for a season. Leaning into the gifts. This is Osirbe, we can work on them in time. But when we hear all these stories, they are all the same thing, creation, new creation, re-creation. We're being created at every moment. I think I use this image, it's a very similar image most hear it, actually, it's Antimandes, the original St. Francis of Assisi image, but God was the singer and we are the song. And what I love about that image is it takes us away from what I have found that they would never put it this way. But there are people that you could be talking, they kind of have what I call Swiss watch theology. You know, at the beginning of your life, God created you, and wound you up, and he's watching you go. Nope. Nope. St. Francis would say, nope. God is as actively creating you in this moment as the very first moment you begin to be. If God stops creating you, you don't exist. It's a singer and a song. I mean, we would all love it if we could just hit a first note and listen to it unfold. But if I stop saying the song stops, if God stops creating you, you don't exist. I mean, if it happens, you won't know, don't tell me. You would just not exist. God calls you into being. That's the love of God that catches us off guard. Even when I'm doing horrible things, God is still calling me into creation. Remember the kid, God? That's why it's hard for God to create you at the beginning of your life, and he doesn't look down now and say, oh, by now that was going to turn out like that. That's why I always cringe when people say, Clowder, I really feel like disappointing God this week. Do you think he didn't see this coming? Now, I know he knows the future, but I've thrown in some curds. No. God knew who you were going to be in this moment and calls you into creation. And so tonight, as we watch people join us today, as we watch people, you know, knit themselves to our community, to our faith, to the revelations that we hold here, we wonder, what do we do to create a new life? Not just for ourselves, but for others. What does it mean to immerse ourselves in such trust that we let go of the old ways that just have not served us? I know we're not always aware of them, but there is no one in the room that doesn't do something that they've learned over time does not serve them. Even me. I even have silverware in my hand at the time. But we all do things that don't serve us well. And one of the things we need to move away from, not in that lenient sense, but in that excited sense that God has something new waiting. And if we believe in God and trust in God, it can happen. And if we experience God in the community and let them journey with us, it can all certainly happen.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 1.0, "text": " May the Lord be with you.", WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.000 May the Lord be with you. 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:02.000 And with your spirit. 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:09.000 We're reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. 00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:13.239 After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was gone in, Mary Magdalene and the other 00:00:13.239 --> 00:00:18.000 Mary were reading from the Gospel. 00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:19.000 Luke. 00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:26.600 At daybreak on the first day of the week, the women who had come from Galilee with Jesus 00:00:26.600 --> 00:00:30.120 took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 00:00:30.120 --> 00:00:34.599 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not 00:00:34.599 --> 00:00:37.639 find the body of the Lord Jesus. 00:00:37.639 --> 00:00:43.479 While they were hustling over this, behold, two men in dazzling garments appeared to them. 00:00:43.479 --> 00:00:47.959 They were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground. 00:00:47.959 --> 00:00:52.360 They said to them, why do you seek the living one among the dead? 00:00:52.360 --> 00:00:57.319 He is not here, but he has been raised. 00:00:57.319 --> 00:01:02.680 Remembering what he said to you while he was still in Galilee, that the son of man must 00:01:02.680 --> 00:01:09.839 be handed over to sinners and be crucified and rise on the third day. 00:01:09.839 --> 00:01:10.839 Remember his words. 00:01:10.839 --> 00:01:16.519 Then they returned from the tomb and announced all these things to the 11 and to all the 00:01:16.519 --> 00:01:17.519 others. 00:01:17.519 --> 00:01:21.599 The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna and Mary, the mother of James. 00:01:21.599 --> 00:01:27.239 The others who had come with them also told this to the apostles, but their stories seemed 00:01:27.239 --> 00:01:31.720 like nonsense and they did not believe them. 00:01:31.720 --> 00:01:37.120 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb, bent down and saw the burial cloths alone. 00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:42.239 Then he went home amazed at what had happened. 00:01:42.239 --> 00:01:43.839 The gospel of the Lord. 00:01:44.080 --> 00:01:46.080 Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:54.080 --> 00:02:05.440 I was here on this night as we gather, 2,000 some-odd, around 2,000 years later. 00:02:05.440 --> 00:02:12.279 If we really contemplate the story, faith is an amazing thing because the story on its 00:02:12.279 --> 00:02:18.160 own still seems like nonsense. 00:02:18.160 --> 00:02:24.399 Everyone in this room, if you're over a certain age, and I'm probably pretty guy age, with 00:02:24.399 --> 00:02:31.759 parents or grandparents who've already experienced death, and my suspicion is a few days after 00:02:31.759 --> 00:02:39.919 the death, if one of your siblings came back and said, Grandma's alive again, you'd be 00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:44.080 like, okay, so what are we drinking tonight? 00:02:44.080 --> 00:02:48.080 You kind of have to wonder. 00:02:48.080 --> 00:02:58.360 And so, what if you do, you know, faith should always have the sense, I mean, the word nonsense 00:02:58.360 --> 00:03:05.600 sounds a little dismissive, but it is outside of what is sensible. 00:03:05.600 --> 00:03:07.720 It is beyond sense. 00:03:07.720 --> 00:03:13.679 If it were not, it would be knowledge, and there would, you know, until recently, science 00:03:13.679 --> 00:03:15.080 would have been science. 00:03:15.080 --> 00:03:24.279 We would have just, you know, no one ever comes and says, well, now, they had two and 00:03:24.279 --> 00:03:27.039 they have two more, and now they have four. 00:03:27.039 --> 00:03:30.639 I don't know, who said, no, two plus two is four. 00:03:30.639 --> 00:03:34.080 No faith, no faith needed. 00:03:34.160 --> 00:03:43.160 So, faith should always fly a little bit in the face of what seems reasonable. 00:03:43.160 --> 00:03:47.080 Now, we have to be careful with that. 00:03:47.080 --> 00:03:50.160 There are three kinds of statements in faith. 00:03:50.160 --> 00:03:56.800 There are rational, which some have surveyed and some kinds are, you know, science, other 00:03:56.800 --> 00:04:00.080 studies, but there's rational and there's irrational. 00:04:00.080 --> 00:04:06.039 We understand those, and then there's a whole slew of what we call non-rationals. 00:04:06.039 --> 00:04:13.000 So if I tell you that two plus two is four, no matter what language I use, if I show you 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:20.519 this and this, and I get to there, I've been practicing since then. 00:04:20.519 --> 00:04:21.519 That makes sense. 00:04:21.519 --> 00:04:27.480 The human mind is built, it has structures that catch that, and not only can we all agree 00:04:27.480 --> 00:04:33.559 on it, we build calculus on it. 00:04:33.559 --> 00:04:35.200 That is a rational thought. 00:04:35.200 --> 00:04:40.600 Now, if I, no matter what language I use, if I try and take these and I keep getting 00:04:40.600 --> 00:04:49.600 to there, your mind will not be able to grab onto it, that is irrational. 00:04:49.600 --> 00:04:56.440 So our faith should be a dance between non-rational and rational. 00:04:56.440 --> 00:04:59.760 It should never go into irrational. 00:04:59.760 --> 00:05:00.760 But it works like this. 00:05:00.760 --> 00:05:01.760 What is non-rational? 00:05:01.760 --> 00:05:09.600 Non-rational is when I say two plus two is good. 00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:14.119 Reason won't get you there, but reason won't disprove it. 00:05:14.119 --> 00:05:21.000 The existence of God, you know, there's a thing in science, in religion we call it myth, 00:05:21.000 --> 00:05:26.399 and a lot of people get, myth gets a bad rap, I love myth. 00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:35.600 Myth is a story that talks about why, why things happen, and one myth can be as good 00:05:35.600 --> 00:05:41.320 as another, and the myth is not always that right. 00:05:41.320 --> 00:05:48.920 You know, when you take great events in history, it can be the Inquisitions, it could be Nazi 00:05:48.920 --> 00:05:57.040 Germany, it could be the assassination of Martin Luther King, these stories happened, 00:05:57.040 --> 00:06:00.480 they're factual, but they also become mythic. 00:06:00.480 --> 00:06:07.160 You know, Watergate, it became mythic the day that thirty years later someone could 00:06:07.160 --> 00:06:13.480 say, I am telling the truth, and you do want to binge. 00:06:13.480 --> 00:06:15.480 It becomes part of our culture. 00:06:15.480 --> 00:06:20.679 It takes on mythic dimension, even if it's true. 00:06:20.679 --> 00:06:25.920 In the same way, there are true stories that are not important, that will never become 00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:27.799 mythic. 00:06:27.799 --> 00:06:32.839 I bought a chicken this week at the store that is factual, and I don't think it will 00:06:32.839 --> 00:06:40.040 ever shape culture, except for that chicken. 00:06:40.040 --> 00:06:46.040 So you know, I think when someone says myth, we all go, this is not a myth, if it's not 00:06:46.040 --> 00:06:47.959 a myth, it's of no importance. 00:06:47.959 --> 00:06:54.040 It can be a myth, it can be a historical myth, myth means it took on that meaning. 00:06:54.040 --> 00:07:01.600 These, all of our myths, when someone says myth, that is religion's way of saying theory. 00:07:01.600 --> 00:07:06.720 Science calls it a theory and half the time, some theories are just that, they're the best 00:07:06.720 --> 00:07:10.079 story to explain everything we see. 00:07:10.079 --> 00:07:16.959 I've always contended that the theory of attraction, if you put, all we know is if you put a particle 00:07:16.959 --> 00:07:20.320 here and a particle here, for some reason they work together. 00:07:20.320 --> 00:07:22.959 We call that the theory of attraction. 00:07:22.959 --> 00:07:26.040 I assume that was written by a lonely physicist. 00:07:26.040 --> 00:07:29.559 Attraction, who knows? 00:07:29.559 --> 00:07:32.799 We don't, you know, years from now they go, oh, did you know there was a curvature of 00:07:32.799 --> 00:07:37.000 a space and for a reason it had nothing to do with all of it. 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:41.359 Are they attracted or are they propelled from emptiness, we do not know. 00:07:41.359 --> 00:07:44.040 But we pick a theory, we stick with it. 00:07:44.040 --> 00:07:50.799 Religion, when someone looks at the big bang theory, did it happen? 00:07:50.799 --> 00:07:52.480 No one knows. 00:07:52.480 --> 00:08:00.119 But as the story goes, it explains where we're at, so does God, that's non-rational when 00:08:00.119 --> 00:08:02.959 you have a third choice and you have to choose. 00:08:02.959 --> 00:08:09.679 Now you can actually choose both of those, you know, God can create a big bang, but the 00:08:09.679 --> 00:08:18.880 thing is there is nothing, anyone who comes out to and says, I can logically prove God, 00:08:18.880 --> 00:08:24.359 get a chair and be ready to be disappointed, because that's not fake. 00:08:24.359 --> 00:08:27.399 What they're really saying is, I can make it scientific. 00:08:27.399 --> 00:08:33.280 And the sadness there is, if it's scientific, it matters, and if it's religion, it doesn't. 00:08:33.280 --> 00:08:37.719 No, no, I'm fine with a table. 00:08:37.719 --> 00:08:43.960 Faith works in areas science can't, science works in areas faith can't. 00:08:43.960 --> 00:08:49.159 You know, I have great faith in God that I owe to my spiritual life. 00:08:49.159 --> 00:08:54.400 I follow the recipe when I'm cooking. 00:08:54.400 --> 00:09:00.599 You can not follow the recipe and pray, but just don't have food for dinner. 00:09:00.599 --> 00:09:07.799 It's one of those, so in this night, we get this money book out to us, it all vibes nonsense. 00:09:07.799 --> 00:09:10.320 And we kind of go, what was wrong with them? 00:09:10.320 --> 00:09:15.520 No, but what's marvelous is that they get past that. 00:09:15.520 --> 00:09:24.200 They find that, you know, all love, anyone here, and granted, I'm preaching from the 00:09:24.200 --> 00:09:27.960 other side of the fence, but I don't care. 00:09:27.960 --> 00:09:34.559 Anyone here who is in love with someone, it is not based on a single fact. 00:09:34.559 --> 00:09:36.280 And it doesn't make it any less real. 00:09:36.280 --> 00:09:42.359 As a matter of fact, it usually makes it more real if we're talking about emotions in love. 00:09:42.359 --> 00:09:49.400 And if you want someone who is in love with someone based on facts, it's usually the amount 00:09:49.400 --> 00:09:52.280 of money in their bank account. 00:09:52.359 --> 00:09:57.159 There's a brat, a love, we don't know. 00:09:57.159 --> 00:10:02.359 Someone will say, oh, why that person, I don't know, I mean, what is it, why do you attract 00:10:02.359 --> 00:10:03.359 them about? 00:10:03.359 --> 00:10:04.359 What do they want to hear? 00:10:04.359 --> 00:10:05.359 Oh, their left eyebrow. 00:10:05.359 --> 00:10:08.359 And I saw the left eyebrow. 00:10:08.359 --> 00:10:12.280 It's a mystery. 00:10:12.280 --> 00:10:18.200 And here we have this great story of mystery, and that's why we begin in the dark. 00:10:18.200 --> 00:10:21.159 It's not just that we're sitting in the tomb. 00:10:21.159 --> 00:10:24.880 We begin in the dark because we always start in mystery. 00:10:24.880 --> 00:10:31.559 Now, when I sit there, there has to be a dance between rational and non-rational. 00:10:31.559 --> 00:10:32.559 God exists. 00:10:32.559 --> 00:10:38.359 Well, that's a non-rational, because number one, we don't always mean the same thing, 00:10:38.359 --> 00:10:43.479 and if someone could make the argument, you can't logic someone into it. 00:10:43.479 --> 00:10:48.840 And if God is love, you can't logic someone into that. 00:10:48.840 --> 00:10:55.000 God could be hatred and just very incompetent at it. 00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:58.880 These are things you go, well, you're right, these are things we believe, but once you 00:10:58.880 --> 00:11:03.400 know your fundamentals, which are always that sort of choice, I choose to believe in God, 00:11:03.400 --> 00:11:07.559 I choose to believe in community, I choose to believe that love is better than hate, 00:11:07.559 --> 00:11:10.919 I choose to believe that we're better together. 00:11:10.919 --> 00:11:17.679 Once we choose our faith and trust the people who are part of our faith, then we have to 00:11:17.679 --> 00:11:20.039 get into something rational. 00:11:20.039 --> 00:11:28.119 For example, I cannot say God is all-loving and all-powerful, but there are some of you 00:11:28.119 --> 00:11:33.159 that he just can't put up with anymore and he says, torture your brain. 00:11:33.159 --> 00:11:40.080 Now I get an irrational, you know, because there is no one, everyone says, well, you 00:11:40.080 --> 00:11:42.719 know, a parent sometimes has to correct someone. 00:11:42.760 --> 00:11:48.039 I've never met a parent who said, I needed to correct my child, I'm going to permanently 00:11:48.039 --> 00:11:53.919 harm them, and there'll be no hope of them ever getting out of it. 00:11:53.919 --> 00:11:57.159 So we know there's those issues, and that's where we're from. 00:11:57.159 --> 00:12:02.919 Oh, there's all this wonder and mystery. 00:12:02.919 --> 00:12:07.880 We have two people come into the faith tonight, and it's coming into a community. 00:12:07.880 --> 00:12:12.359 It's belief in a scripture that was written and accepted by a community, not just written 00:12:12.520 --> 00:12:20.239 by communities, but community decided, Gospel of Luke, it's going in, Josephus' treatise 00:12:20.239 --> 00:12:26.599 on the state of Rome, you know, Gospel of Thomas, everyone said, why did that not make 00:12:26.599 --> 00:12:27.599 it in? 00:12:27.599 --> 00:12:30.840 It was written about a century too late. 00:12:30.840 --> 00:12:35.400 There are all these, why did that go in, why did that, who decided which goes in? 00:12:35.400 --> 00:12:39.039 And when we say something is scripture, is it because it was inspired when it was written 00:12:39.039 --> 00:12:44.400 or because it was inspired when it was chosen, or who got inspired, how many levels, and 00:12:44.400 --> 00:12:50.960 then which friend says, we are here because we believe that we experience God more deeply 00:12:50.960 --> 00:12:59.159 in the gathering of community, that we pull apart our faith, and we kind ourselves, raiding 00:12:59.159 --> 00:13:01.440 into the mystery. 00:13:01.440 --> 00:13:08.200 I've watched this week, as in Rome, Palm Sunday, they were singing, goes on, last night, watching 00:13:08.359 --> 00:13:13.280 as the people came forward to cross, so many people came with deep grief. 00:13:13.280 --> 00:13:20.440 And these are things we bring to our faith, to our shared experience of the world, which 00:13:20.440 --> 00:13:28.359 for us, points to God, reasonably, not rationally, but reasonably. 00:13:28.359 --> 00:13:32.080 And so when we watch people come to faith this night, not that they come to faith this 00:13:32.080 --> 00:13:37.280 night, but they make that ritual expression of joining us. 00:13:37.359 --> 00:13:41.159 They become part of our dialogue. 00:13:41.159 --> 00:13:48.479 We're going to hear so much about resurrection, but new life happens in so many ways. 00:13:48.479 --> 00:13:55.719 Certainly we're looking at this miracle of from death into new life, but every change 00:13:55.719 --> 00:13:59.440 you have ever had in your life is the same. 00:13:59.440 --> 00:14:03.280 We die as something, and we rise as something else. 00:14:03.280 --> 00:14:09.440 Anyone who is married, God willing, has died to single life. 00:14:09.440 --> 00:14:11.400 You left that in mind. 00:14:11.400 --> 00:14:17.119 You know, when you have young children, you have died to sleep. 00:14:17.119 --> 00:14:23.119 Your life changes, you're now a parent, and you're not just ever the same. 00:14:23.119 --> 00:14:27.559 I have a friend who's actually here tonight, who told me, she said, you know, I expected 00:14:27.559 --> 00:14:32.719 children to see a change in my life, but becoming a grandparent was a game-changer 00:14:32.719 --> 00:14:35.880 at its time. 00:14:35.880 --> 00:14:41.840 And God says, and your pieces, and your change, as you're confided, whether you die but as 00:14:41.840 --> 00:14:46.200 old and embrace what's coming. 00:14:46.200 --> 00:14:53.559 Joseph Campbell used to say, if we can just let go of the life we've been clinging to, 00:14:53.559 --> 00:14:58.239 then we can find the life that's been waiting for us. 00:14:58.239 --> 00:14:59.239 It's out there. 00:14:59.239 --> 00:15:04.520 God invites us in, and so on, and we hear these miracle stories. 00:15:04.520 --> 00:15:14.520 And they are very pointed, creation, the most ignored miracle in our lives. 00:15:14.520 --> 00:15:20.119 Most of us were younger than half, but creation in every moment. 00:15:20.119 --> 00:15:27.159 As a matter of fact, most people don't really experience creation until they have a child. 00:15:27.159 --> 00:15:33.919 When they hold that base in their hands, then they start to understand creation. 00:15:33.919 --> 00:15:39.640 I mean, it sounds weird to say, but you really weren't there for your own, and now you just 00:15:39.640 --> 00:15:40.640 weren't there. 00:15:40.640 --> 00:15:46.039 When we see a baby come into the world, that's the creation story all over again. 00:15:46.039 --> 00:15:52.559 When we see people who, whether it's addiction or illness, whether it's struggles with family, 00:15:52.559 --> 00:15:57.479 when they find a way out, that's the exodus story. 00:15:57.479 --> 00:16:01.919 We are all enslaved to so many things. 00:16:01.919 --> 00:16:06.760 We're enslaved to our habits, and so the exodus story wants to show us that there is freedom, 00:16:06.760 --> 00:16:12.880 and then we get the Isaiah, where God keeps saying, come to the water. 00:16:12.880 --> 00:16:20.200 If you're thirsty, come to the water, and that's what we'll do tonight. 00:16:20.200 --> 00:16:24.479 And certainly in these images, as we do it every Easter, we ask ourselves, what's the 00:16:24.479 --> 00:16:25.479 new life? 00:16:25.479 --> 00:16:30.599 We're going to be nagged on this for the next few weeks. 00:16:30.599 --> 00:16:37.140 You know, Lent, I think for most people, and we do different things, but Lent has always 00:16:37.140 --> 00:16:42.359 been about trying to overcome a weakness. 00:16:42.359 --> 00:16:47.679 You know, we give up something, we prove that we can, we get charged. 00:16:47.679 --> 00:16:50.359 I think Easter should be the opposite. 00:16:50.359 --> 00:16:56.080 If we weren't getting rid of a weakness, whether we succeeded or not, I think Easter should 00:16:56.080 --> 00:16:59.359 be learning to lean into our strengths. 00:16:59.359 --> 00:17:03.400 We don't think as much about that in our religion. 00:17:03.400 --> 00:17:09.800 We think, you know, what's different for me from, you know, from six weeks ago when I 00:17:09.800 --> 00:17:15.839 started, like, well, there's less meat in my system, and what I can take away. 00:17:15.839 --> 00:17:19.839 Or sometimes, like, I've got to work on my weaknesses. 00:17:19.839 --> 00:17:23.839 You always hear people, well, you know, I've got to work on this, I've got to work on that. 00:17:23.839 --> 00:17:25.239 What's your strength? 00:17:25.239 --> 00:17:28.959 Because you should be working on, this is only they're helping a strength. 00:17:28.959 --> 00:17:36.400 I have a teacher who used to always say that, she'd say, you know, Barishtakaw's success 00:17:36.400 --> 00:17:42.959 was not that he fixed his weakness, which was tap dancing. 00:17:42.959 --> 00:17:45.959 There were kinds of dances he would say, I'm no good at that style. 00:17:45.959 --> 00:17:51.959 I'm no good at that style, and people didn't say, huh, not a very well-rounded dancer. 00:17:51.959 --> 00:17:56.760 It didn't hurt his financial bottom line in the end. 00:17:56.760 --> 00:18:03.319 I think sometimes we need to stay, look, let's figure out what we need to move away from. 00:18:03.719 --> 00:18:09.119 But we also, God calls us to do life, and that means figuring out the gifts and leaning 00:18:09.119 --> 00:18:12.119 in for a season. 00:18:12.119 --> 00:18:14.199 Leaning into the gifts. 00:18:14.199 --> 00:18:17.880 This is Osirbe, we can work on them in time. 00:18:17.880 --> 00:18:27.000 But when we hear all these stories, they are all the same thing, creation, new creation, 00:18:27.000 --> 00:18:29.280 re-creation. 00:18:29.280 --> 00:18:31.959 We're being created at every moment. 00:18:32.079 --> 00:18:41.000 I think I use this image, it's a very similar image most hear it, actually, it's Antimandes, 00:18:41.000 --> 00:18:48.199 the original St. Francis of Assisi image, but God was the singer and we are the song. 00:18:48.199 --> 00:18:52.359 And what I love about that image is it takes us away from what I have found that they would 00:18:52.359 --> 00:18:53.359 never put it this way. 00:18:53.359 --> 00:18:56.880 But there are people that you could be talking, they kind of have what I call Swiss watch 00:18:56.880 --> 00:18:57.880 theology. 00:18:58.880 --> 00:19:05.400 You know, at the beginning of your life, God created you, and wound you up, and he's watching 00:19:05.400 --> 00:19:06.400 you go. 00:19:06.400 --> 00:19:07.400 Nope. 00:19:07.400 --> 00:19:08.400 Nope. 00:19:08.400 --> 00:19:11.400 St. Francis would say, nope. 00:19:11.400 --> 00:19:21.599 God is as actively creating you in this moment as the very first moment you begin to be. 00:19:22.400 --> 00:19:27.800 If God stops creating you, you don't exist. 00:19:27.800 --> 00:19:30.359 It's a singer and a song. 00:19:30.359 --> 00:19:37.160 I mean, we would all love it if we could just hit a first note and listen to it unfold. 00:19:37.160 --> 00:19:44.359 But if I stop saying the song stops, if God stops creating you, you don't exist. 00:19:44.359 --> 00:19:49.359 I mean, if it happens, you won't know, don't tell me. 00:19:50.119 --> 00:19:52.119 You would just not exist. 00:19:52.119 --> 00:19:54.119 God calls you into being. 00:19:54.119 --> 00:19:57.119 That's the love of God that catches us off guard. 00:19:57.119 --> 00:20:01.119 Even when I'm doing horrible things, God is still calling me into creation. 00:20:01.119 --> 00:20:03.119 Remember the kid, God? 00:20:03.119 --> 00:20:07.119 That's why it's hard for God to create you at the beginning of your life, and he doesn't 00:20:07.119 --> 00:20:12.119 look down now and say, oh, by now that was going to turn out like that. 00:20:12.119 --> 00:20:16.119 That's why I always cringe when people say, Clowder, I really feel like disappointing 00:20:16.119 --> 00:20:18.119 God this week. 00:20:18.880 --> 00:20:21.880 Do you think he didn't see this coming? 00:20:21.880 --> 00:20:25.880 Now, I know he knows the future, but I've thrown in some curds. 00:20:25.880 --> 00:20:28.880 No. 00:20:28.880 --> 00:20:32.880 God knew who you were going to be in this moment and calls you into creation. 00:20:32.880 --> 00:20:38.880 And so tonight, as we watch people join us today, as we watch people, you know, 00:20:38.880 --> 00:20:44.880 knit themselves to our community, to our faith, to the revelations that we hold here, 00:20:45.640 --> 00:20:48.640 we wonder, what do we do to create a new life? 00:20:48.640 --> 00:20:50.640 Not just for ourselves, but for others. 00:20:50.640 --> 00:20:58.640 What does it mean to immerse ourselves in such trust that we let go of the old ways 00:20:58.640 --> 00:21:02.640 that just have not served us? 00:21:02.640 --> 00:21:07.640 I know we're not always aware of them, but there is no one in the room that doesn't 00:21:07.640 --> 00:21:13.640 do something that they've learned over time does not serve them. 00:21:14.400 --> 00:21:16.400 Even me. 00:21:16.400 --> 00:21:20.400 I even have silverware in my hand at the time. 00:21:20.400 --> 00:21:24.400 But we all do things that don't serve us well. 00:21:24.400 --> 00:21:30.400 And one of the things we need to move away from, not in that lenient sense, 00:21:30.400 --> 00:21:36.400 but in that excited sense that God has something new waiting. 00:21:36.400 --> 00:21:41.400 And if we believe in God and trust in God, it can happen. 00:21:42.160 --> 00:21:47.160 And if we experience God in the community and let them journey with us, 00:21:47.160 --> 00:21:50.160 it can all certainly happen.

Father Pat’s message is a profound meditation on the mystery of faith, the interplay between reason and belief, and the transformative power of resurrection—not just as a historical event, but as an ongoing spiritual reality. He invites his listeners to embrace the paradox of faith: that it is not irrational, but non-rational—a realm where love, mystery, and divine presence dwell beyond the limitations of human logic. Through the story of the resurrection and the rituals of Easter, he calls the faithful not only to remember Christ's rising but to recognize and participate in the continual act of being re-created by God. Faith, for Father Pat, is a lived experience in community, an ongoing dialogue between trust, transformation, and mystery. In detail, Father Pat begins by highlighting the initial reaction to the resurrection—the disbelief of the apostles when the women first report the empty tomb. He draws a striking analogy between this ancient skepticism and how we today might react if told a deceased loved one had come back to life. This, he asserts, is the paradoxical nature of faith: it appears as "nonsense," not because it is false, but because it transcends rational categories. He distinguishes between three kinds of statements: rational (like mathematics), irrational (which defy reason completely), and non-rational (which exist beyond reason but are not unreasonable). Faith, he insists, belongs to this third category. It is like saying “two plus two is good”—a statement not provable by logic, but not refutable either. It speaks to values, meaning, and purpose—the realm of the heart and soul. He then discusses the nature of myth—not as falsehood, but as a meaningful story that expresses truths beyond empirical data. Just as scientific theories attempt to explain the physical world, religious myths seek to explain the existential and spiritual dimensions of life. Stories like creation, exodus, and resurrection are not only historical narratives but also ongoing realities that help us interpret our experiences of birth, liberation, and renewal. He emphasizes that faith is not about scientifically proving God’s existence but about making a choice to believe, to trust, and to live in a relationship with the divine and with others. Father Pat also touches on the communal dimension of faith. Scripture itself, he reminds us, was not only written by individuals but selected and preserved by communities of believers. The canon of the Bible reflects the discernment of communities that recognized certain writings as inspired and formative. When people join the Church, as they do especially during Easter through baptism and confirmation, they are not simply assenting to a set of beliefs but entering into a living community. This gathering is where God is encountered, not just personally but corporately—in shared rituals, stories, and relationships. He further reflects on the transformation that resurrection symbolizes—not only the literal rising of Jesus, but the countless ways we are called to die to our old selves and rise anew. Every major life transition—marriage, parenthood, recovery from addiction, healing from grief—involves a kind of resurrection. We leave behind one mode of being and embrace another. He encourages listeners to let go of what no longer serves them, echoing Joseph Campbell’s idea that by releasing the life we cling to, we can find the life waiting for us. This is the Easter invitation: not just to believe in new life, but to live it. Father Pat concludes with a powerful image from St. Francis: God is the singer, and we are the song. This metaphor illustrates the continual, present-tense nature of creation. God is not a watchmaker who wound us up and walked away, but an ever-active Creator who sustains us in every moment. Even when we fall short, God does not withdraw, but continues to call us into being. This divine fidelity is at the heart of the resurrection message—God’s love is constant, creative, and transformative. Ultimately, Father Pat challenges us to not only overcome our weaknesses (as we attempt during Lent) but to lean into our strengths during Easter. Our spiritual lives should be grounded not only in repentance but in the joyful discovery and use of our gifts. This season is a call to co-create with God, to build new life not just for ourselves, but for others. Faith, then, is not static belief, but dynamic participation in the mystery of God’s ongoing work in the world—through community, through transformation, and through love.
