Glory to you, O Lord. As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples, a sizable crowd, and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat on the roadside begging. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, son of David, have pity on me. And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, Son of David, have pity on me. Jesus stopped and said, Call him. So they called the blind man, saying to him, Take courage, get up, Jesus is calling you. He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. Jesus said to him in reply, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man replied to him, Master, I want to see you. Jesus told him, Go your way, your faith has saved you. Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, Lord Jesus Christ. This gospel, and many of the miracle stories, probably the greater bulk of the miracle healing stories, have to do with sight and hearing. There are two, I think, don't check me on it, but I think there are two stories about mute. But one of them is a deaf mute, and his hearing is healed, and then his speaking, almost as though Jesus is saying we should listen before we speak. Crazy concept. And the other is a man possessed by a mute spirit. Now, people talk back and forth, does that mean he was mute, or that there was something muting his spirit, or what that means. But it's an interesting idea that so many of these stories are around hearing and seeing. Because especially, and this is Mark's gospel, but especially by the time you get to John's gospel, this sight is really not about seeing with the eye, it's about wisdom, it's about opening our eyes to what goes on around us. In the story, not Bartimaeus, but the story of the man born blind. I always love that phrase. The man born blind, because you know who else is born blind. Everyone, no one comes out of the womb going, that was amazing! We come out with our eyes closed. And opening takes time. There may be once in a great while they say, oh, someone comes out with their eyes open. And then it turns out those people are in mental institutions. But they come out, we come out blind. We are all born blind. And then we learn to see, to some extent. But learning to see more deeply can take longer and longer. It occurs to me whenever I get to these types of stories, that it took me years, and I know that years from now I'll look back and say I wasn't there yet now. I see things in scripture that I never saw, because most of us open scriptures, and if our knowledge of scripture is a little bit passing here and there, and we haven't taken tons of time with it, we will see what we were told to see, not what's on the page. And I go back and forth. Even this, this never struck me as odd until about, oh, I don't know, maybe ten years ago. Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus. Now, in Hebrew, Bartimaeus means the son of Timaeus. So, son of Timaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus. Clearly, even Mark, this earliest gospel, is already starting to write for people who don't know Hebrew anymore, who don't understand. And also, it's just the way language develops. No one, if I say that this is, you know, we know now that Johnson no longer means the son of John, but that is the origin of that last name, and any of those last names that end in son. So, some of it is just normal, you know, sort of development of language, but you just don't see those things. You also don't see exactly what's on the page. It took me years before I read the Adam and Eve story for the first time, and, you know, the Adam and Eve story is the one we all know. When someone says, tell us about creation in the Bible, almost no one goes to the God said, let there be light, and there was light. They go to the older story. It's a much more primitive story. It's the story where God is not omniscient and all powerful, all knowing, because he doesn't know why Adam's naked, and he doesn't know, well, who told you you could eat meat? He asks a lot of questions for an all-knowing God. It's our earliest vision, and later on, almost 500 years later, we get, let there be light, and we don't know that because the final editor put let there be light as the first chapter, so we said, which one comes first? Well, which one was written first, or which one got put in an earlier chapter? So this early story, we have to take it as an early story, but when I, about 15 years ago, reading it, and I go, so Eve wasn't actually around when God said, don't eat the fruit. God says to Adam, don't eat the fruit, before he creates Eve in that story. Now, this makes perfect sense with early religion, and for some people with religion today, but for early religion, so Eve's not around, so the story leads us to wonder where she heard don't eat the fruit? Probably from Adam. So what was the great sin, that she didn't listen to God, or she did not listen to a man? Back when the story was written, I would imagine the second one, luckily we're past that. I'm reading some stuff online that gets scary. And so there's stuff that you go, oh, that's right there in the story. How have I not seen that? Because the story I've been told actually takes precedence over what's right there in front of my eyes. We don't like to notice this. I'm going to be doing this a lot. I'm going to be doing this a lot today, so just get used to it. It's not a rash, I'm adjusting the microphone. This sigh, this ability to look at something you've seen forever and go, oh, never saw that before. It still happens almost every time I open up a page of scripture. I go, wait, look at what it actually says, rather than what I've been thinking it says all these years. Anyone ever try to proofread their own work? Every week I'm over there and the prayers of the faithful come and someone reads a prayer and I go, I read that 20 times. How did I miss that I didn't put a verb in that sentence? Because I read what I thought I wrote every time I go to proofread it. And we don't see what's right in front of us. Brene Brown calls this the rough draft. We have a rough draft of things in our head. We have a rough draft of how things go. So we see someone on the street and they're asking for money and someone in their mind says, yes, but if you give it to them they'll probably just spend it on alcohol. Well, you filled in an awful lot of a rough draft there. Well, anyone who starts a sentence with, well, you know, those people, those people are a whole group of individuals and they all have different ways of approaching the world and they don't all agree on things. I mean, you know, could you imagine anyone finding, this is going to make some sound, hold on. Oh, no, it didn't. Can you imagine anyone looking at your entire family and saying, oh, well, we know how they think. If there's four Dolans in a room there are five opinions. So it's, you know, I mean, but people do that. From the outside we look and we go, well, we know about those people. And we don't know that we've stopped seeing what's in front of us and we've got old voices, old ideas in our heads telling us what's going on and we will not look at what's in front of us. One of the things you do not ever get to see, unless you've got a missile in front of you and you're really paying attention, is where this falls, this story. This story literally, this is one of those moments that's absolutely sequential. Last week we ended with chapter 10, you know, verse 45 and we picked up at chapter 10, verse 46. And there's a little parallelism in there that we miss. When Jesus says exact words, what do you want me to do for you? We heard that last week because James and John came and said, we want you to do whatever we tell you. And he says, what do you want me to do for you? And we get, so we're getting contrasting stories. Last week was, we want you to give us authority and power. And Jesus says, wow, okay, no. This guy says, I want to see. Jesus says, got it. He wants, he's not interested in controlling the world, he actually wants to see it. What's going on? And it dovetails with what we talked about last week. Okay, what I talked about and you endured last week is how do we handle people who don't see the world the way we do? Do we see them? Do we actually want to know where their journey led them? Are we interested? Or nope, they're the enemy, I already know it, I'm right and they're wrong. It is one of the toughest lines to not cross between, you know, faithful certainty and arrogance. How do we become certain without becoming arrogant? Because it's a trick and a half. And I think, I don't think my faith ever calls me, and yours might be different, mine has never said, if you're faithful, Pat, you will know you're right about things. Unfortunately, I do say that to myself, but that is not pure faith. Faith is, I will never understand perfectly. There's always more to learn. There's always something out there, I wonder what I missed, I wonder what scripture I will open this year and go, what? It says what? And I always have people come to me and say, I've never heard that in scripture before. Now, we have a three-year cycle, you've heard it every three years. You just never heard it. We're called to see and hear what's in front of us, and the best we can do, so how do we fight this? My advice to people is, scripture will never guide your life as strongly as the filters through which you read it. The filters through which we read it will do more to guide our lives. Some people will read the same page of scripture, and some will come and say, it says right there, those people are going to hell, and the other will say, but down here it says don't judge people. The filter with which we read scripture. So know your filters, and own them. I must tell you, I am tired of looking at people online who say, well, God says, oh, does he? Have tea with him, did you? Well, it's in scripture. Oh, don't get me started there, because I can give you five scriptures that disagree. Yes, but God says the things I like in scripture. Know your filters. Know the paradigms and the sort of preexisting ideas that shape how you see the world. Most of us think that we see the world, and then we reconcile it with all this stuff. No. Matter of fact, there's a thing, it was really big in psychology, it was, I mean, they still believe it, it just wasn't quite so shiny and new, about 20, 25 years ago, what they called the amygdala hijack, which said when you see something from the visual cortex, it goes through the emotional center of your brain before it hits the cognitive center. Which means you will feel about it before you analyze it, and then you will tell yourself you analyzed it, and that's why you feel this way. It is so hard to kind of turn off the amygdala hijacker. I've probably told you this before, but I had a friend in college, and we're still friends, but he's really got, he struggles with racism. Or he doesn't, but all of us struggle with his racism. And he'll tell you, he always puts it off to PTSD. I had an event in my life that you don't understand. When I was in college, and I heard this story the first time like 10 years after college, when I was in college, I was mugged by these three tall skinny black kids. I was mugged by them, and so yes, when I go down the street and I see that, yes, I tense up. So my question to them, I said, I get it, I get it. That could be a physiological response. Do you have that with all tall people? Always play dumb. Do you? All skinny people? But all black people, huh? And there was a preexisting paradigm that told you that made sense. And if someone had looked at you and said, it's because they're tall, you would have said, you are the dumbest person on earth. That makes no sense. There's nothing in my mind that's going to believe that's because they're tall. So what was in there ahead of time that let him believe it was because they were black? You know, we think, I've got an experience that shaped me. Things shape us before the experience. Voices in our head, paradigms, ways we see things. And Jesus says, are you brave enough to join Bartimaeus and ask God to open your eyes? Open my eyes, and, you know, a physical therapist I know always says that we always forget that before I can pick up these glasses, before these muscles engage, the mind is going to send a signal to tell these muscles to turn off. I sent it about 20 years ago, and it hasn't come back. But the opposing muscles have to turn off so that the other muscles can turn on. If they don't, you get that sort of, I mean, you can do it on purpose, and that's what they call isometric exercise, where you get your muscles to fight each other. But basically, you have muscles that have to turn off before others can turn on. And we're all saying, give us sight. And Jesus is saying, are you ready to turn off the muscles that are keeping you from it? You want to turn off the paradigm muscles, the voices in your head, the things we were taught? You want to turn those off long enough to see the world. And what he says is, man, that is a great step of faith, and that's why he says to them, your faith has already healed you. If you're ready, if you're ready to turn off the muscles that tell you how to see the world, Jesus is ready to open our eyes and let us see with interest and honesty the world that is truly around us.", "segments": [{"id": 0, "seek": 0, "start": 0.0, "end": 3.0, "text": " The Lord be with you.", "tokens": [50364, 440, 3257, 312, 365, 291, 13, 50514], "temperature": 0.0, "avg_logprob": WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.000 The Lord be with you. 00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:05.000 And with your spirit. 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:07.000 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. 00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:09.000 Glory to you, O Lord. 00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:16.000 As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples, a sizable crowd, and a sizable crowd, 00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:21.000 Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat on the roadside begging. 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:25.000 On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, 00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:28.000 Jesus, son of David, have pity on me. 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:31.000 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. 00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:34.000 But he kept calling out all the more, 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:37.000 Son of David, have pity on me. 00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:39.000 Jesus stopped and said, Call him. 00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:42.000 So they called the blind man, saying to him, 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:45.000 Take courage, get up, Jesus is calling you. 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:50.000 He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. 00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:56.000 Jesus said to him in reply, What do you want me to do for you? 00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:01.000 The blind man replied to him, Master, I want to see you. 00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:04.000 Jesus told him, Go your way, your faith has saved you. 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:09.000 Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way. 00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:11.000 The Gospel of the Lord. 00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:14.000 Praise be to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:26.000 This gospel, and many of the miracle stories, 00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:30.000 probably the greater bulk of the miracle healing stories, 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:33.000 have to do with sight and hearing. 00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:38.000 There are two, I think, don't check me on it, 00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:42.000 but I think there are two stories about mute. 00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:45.000 But one of them is a deaf mute, 00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:50.000 and his hearing is healed, and then his speaking, 00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:54.000 almost as though Jesus is saying we should listen before we speak. 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:58.000 Crazy concept. 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:03.000 And the other is a man possessed by a mute spirit. 00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:08.000 Now, people talk back and forth, does that mean he was mute, 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:11.000 or that there was something muting his spirit, or what that means. 00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:16.000 But it's an interesting idea that so many of these stories 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:18.000 are around hearing and seeing. 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:21.000 Because especially, and this is Mark's gospel, 00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:23.000 but especially by the time you get to John's gospel, 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:28.000 this sight is really not about seeing with the eye, 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:32.000 it's about wisdom, it's about opening our eyes 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:34.000 to what goes on around us. 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:38.000 In the story, not Bartimaeus, 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:41.000 but the story of the man born blind. 00:02:41.000 --> 00:02:43.000 I always love that phrase. 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.000 The man born blind, because you know who else is born blind. 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:52.000 Everyone, no one comes out of the womb going, 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:54.000 that was amazing! 00:02:54.000 --> 00:03:00.000 We come out with our eyes closed. 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:04.000 And opening takes time. 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:08.000 There may be once in a great while they say, 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:10.000 oh, someone comes out with their eyes open. 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:14.000 And then it turns out those people are in mental institutions. 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:18.000 But they come out, we come out blind. 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:20.000 We are all born blind. 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:24.000 And then we learn to see, to some extent. 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:28.000 But learning to see more deeply can take longer and longer. 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:32.000 It occurs to me whenever I get to these types of stories, 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:37.000 that it took me years, and I know that years from now 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:40.000 I'll look back and say I wasn't there yet now. 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:44.000 I see things in scripture that I never saw, 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:47.000 because most of us open scriptures, 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:52.000 and if our knowledge of scripture is a little bit passing here and there, 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:55.000 and we haven't taken tons of time with it, 00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:58.000 we will see what we were told to see, 00:03:58.000 --> 00:04:00.000 not what's on the page. 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:03.000 And I go back and forth. 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:07.000 Even this, this never struck me as odd until about, 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:10.000 oh, I don't know, maybe ten years ago. 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:13.000 Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus. 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:19.000 Now, in Hebrew, Bartimaeus means the son of Timaeus. 00:04:19.000 --> 00:04:24.000 So, son of Timaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus. 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:28.000 Clearly, even Mark, this earliest gospel, 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:32.000 is already starting to write for people who don't know Hebrew anymore, 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.000 who don't understand. 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:38.000 And also, it's just the way language develops. 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:41.000 No one, if I say that this is, you know, 00:04:41.000 --> 00:04:44.000 we know now that Johnson no longer means the son of John, 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:47.000 but that is the origin of that last name, 00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:50.000 and any of those last names that end in son. 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:54.000 So, some of it is just normal, you know, sort of development of language, 00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:57.000 but you just don't see those things. 00:04:57.000 --> 00:04:59.000 You also don't see exactly what's on the page. 00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:03.000 It took me years before I read the Adam and Eve story for the first time, 00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:06.000 and, you know, the Adam and Eve story is the one we all know. 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:10.000 When someone says, tell us about creation in the Bible, 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:15.000 almost no one goes to the God said, let there be light, and there was light. 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:17.000 They go to the older story. 00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:19.000 It's a much more primitive story. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:24.000 It's the story where God is not omniscient and all powerful, all knowing, 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:28.000 because he doesn't know why Adam's naked, and he doesn't know, 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:30.000 well, who told you you could eat meat? 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:33.000 He asks a lot of questions for an all-knowing God. 00:05:33.000 --> 00:05:36.000 It's our earliest vision, and later on, 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:41.000 almost 500 years later, we get, let there be light, 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:44.000 and we don't know that because the final editor put let there be light 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:48.000 as the first chapter, so we said, which one comes first? 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:53.000 Well, which one was written first, or which one got put in an earlier chapter? 00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:56.000 So this early story, we have to take it as an early story, 00:05:56.000 --> 00:06:02.000 but when I, about 15 years ago, reading it, and I go, 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:07.000 so Eve wasn't actually around when God said, don't eat the fruit. 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:12.000 God says to Adam, don't eat the fruit, before he creates Eve in that story. 00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:15.000 Now, this makes perfect sense with early religion, 00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:19.000 and for some people with religion today, but for early religion, 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:25.000 so Eve's not around, so the story leads us to wonder 00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.000 where she heard don't eat the fruit? 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:31.000 Probably from Adam. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:34.000 So what was the great sin, that she didn't listen to God, 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:36.000 or she did not listen to a man? 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:42.000 Back when the story was written, I would imagine the second one, 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:45.000 luckily we're past that. 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:50.000 I'm reading some stuff online that gets scary. 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:57.000 And so there's stuff that you go, oh, that's right there in the story. 00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:59.000 How have I not seen that? 00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:04.000 Because the story I've been told actually takes precedence 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:08.000 over what's right there in front of my eyes. 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:11.000 We don't like to notice this. 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:13.000 I'm going to be doing this a lot. 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:17.000 I'm going to be doing this a lot today, so just get used to it. 00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:20.000 It's not a rash, I'm adjusting the microphone. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:27.000 This sigh, this ability to look at something you've seen forever and go, 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:30.000 oh, never saw that before. 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:35.000 It still happens almost every time I open up a page of scripture. 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:40.000 I go, wait, look at what it actually says, 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:44.000 rather than what I've been thinking it says all these years. 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:49.000 Anyone ever try to proofread their own work? 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:53.000 Every week I'm over there and the prayers of the faithful come 00:07:53.000 --> 00:07:57.000 and someone reads a prayer and I go, I read that 20 times. 00:07:57.000 --> 00:08:01.000 How did I miss that I didn't put a verb in that sentence? 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:06.000 Because I read what I thought I wrote every time I go to proofread it. 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:08.000 And we don't see what's right in front of us. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:11.000 Brene Brown calls this the rough draft. 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:14.000 We have a rough draft of things in our head. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:18.000 We have a rough draft of how things go. 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:22.000 So we see someone on the street and they're asking for money 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:24.000 and someone in their mind says, yes, but if you give it to them 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:27.000 they'll probably just spend it on alcohol. 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:31.000 Well, you filled in an awful lot of a rough draft there. 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:36.000 Well, anyone who starts a sentence with, well, you know, those people, 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:38.000 those people are a whole group of individuals 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:41.000 and they all have different ways of approaching the world 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:43.000 and they don't all agree on things. 00:08:43.000 --> 00:08:46.000 I mean, you know, could you imagine anyone finding, 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:48.000 this is going to make some sound, hold on. 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:50.000 Oh, no, it didn't. 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:54.000 Can you imagine anyone looking at your entire family and saying, 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:58.000 oh, well, we know how they think. 00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:04.000 If there's four Dolans in a room there are five opinions. 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:07.000 So it's, you know, I mean, but people do that. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:10.000 From the outside we look and we go, well, we know about those people. 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:13.000 And we don't know that we've stopped seeing what's in front of us 00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:19.000 and we've got old voices, old ideas in our heads telling us what's going on 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:24.000 and we will not look at what's in front of us. 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:28.000 One of the things you do not ever get to see, 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:30.000 unless you've got a missile in front of you 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:32.000 and you're really paying attention, 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:35.000 is where this falls, this story. 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:41.000 This story literally, this is one of those moments that's absolutely sequential. 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:47.000 Last week we ended with chapter 10, you know, verse 45 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:51.000 and we picked up at chapter 10, verse 46. 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:54.000 And there's a little parallelism in there that we miss. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:10:00.000 When Jesus says exact words, what do you want me to do for you? 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:04.000 We heard that last week because James and John came and said, 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:06.000 we want you to do whatever we tell you. 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:09.000 And he says, what do you want me to do for you? 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:13.000 And we get, so we're getting contrasting stories. 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:18.000 Last week was, we want you to give us authority and power. 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:26.000 And Jesus says, wow, okay, no. 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:30.000 This guy says, I want to see. 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:33.000 Jesus says, got it. 00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:36.000 He wants, he's not interested in controlling the world, 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:39.000 he actually wants to see it. 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:41.000 What's going on? 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:45.000 And it dovetails with what we talked about last week. 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:49.000 Okay, what I talked about and you endured last week 00:10:49.000 --> 00:10:56.000 is how do we handle people who don't see the world the way we do? 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:57.000 Do we see them? 00:10:57.000 --> 00:11:03.000 Do we actually want to know where their journey led them? 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:05.000 Are we interested? 00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:10.000 Or nope, they're the enemy, I already know it, I'm right and they're wrong. 00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:15.000 It is one of the toughest lines to not cross 00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:21.000 between, you know, faithful certainty and arrogance. 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:27.000 How do we become certain without becoming arrogant? 00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:30.000 Because it's a trick and a half. 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:34.000 And I think, I don't think my faith ever calls me, 00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:37.000 and yours might be different, mine has never said, 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:44.000 if you're faithful, Pat, you will know you're right about things. 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:50.000 Unfortunately, I do say that to myself, but that is not pure faith. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:54.000 Faith is, I will never understand perfectly. 00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:56.000 There's always more to learn. 00:11:56.000 --> 00:11:59.000 There's always something out there, I wonder what I missed, 00:11:59.000 --> 00:12:03.000 I wonder what scripture I will open this year and go, 00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:04.000 what? 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:06.000 It says what? 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:08.000 And I always have people come to me and say, 00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:11.000 I've never heard that in scripture before. 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:16.000 Now, we have a three-year cycle, you've heard it every three years. 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:19.000 You just never heard it. 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:22.000 We're called to see and hear what's in front of us, 00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:27.000 and the best we can do, so how do we fight this? 00:12:27.000 --> 00:12:30.000 My advice to people is, 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:38.000 scripture will never guide your life as strongly as the filters through which you read it. 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:42.000 The filters through which we read it will do more to guide our lives. 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:44.000 Some people will read the same page of scripture, 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:46.000 and some will come and say, 00:12:46.000 --> 00:12:48.000 it says right there, those people are going to hell, 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:52.000 and the other will say, but down here it says don't judge people. 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:56.000 The filter with which we read scripture. 00:12:56.000 --> 00:13:01.000 So know your filters, and own them. 00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:07.000 I must tell you, I am tired of looking at people online who say, 00:13:07.000 --> 00:13:11.000 well, God says, oh, does he? 00:13:11.000 --> 00:13:14.000 Have tea with him, did you? 00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:15.000 Well, it's in scripture. 00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:20.000 Oh, don't get me started there, because I can give you five scriptures that disagree. 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:25.000 Yes, but God says the things I like in scripture. 00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:27.000 Know your filters. 00:13:27.000 --> 00:13:36.000 Know the paradigms and the sort of preexisting ideas that shape how you see the world. 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:41.000 Most of us think that we see the world, and then we reconcile it with all this stuff. 00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:46.000 No. Matter of fact, there's a thing, it was really big in psychology, 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:50.000 it was, I mean, they still believe it, it just wasn't quite so shiny and new, 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:55.000 about 20, 25 years ago, what they called the amygdala hijack, 00:13:55.000 --> 00:14:00.000 which said when you see something from the visual cortex, 00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:07.000 it goes through the emotional center of your brain before it hits the cognitive center. 00:14:07.000 --> 00:14:11.000 Which means you will feel about it before you analyze it, 00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:17.000 and then you will tell yourself you analyzed it, and that's why you feel this way. 00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:22.000 It is so hard to kind of turn off the amygdala hijacker. 00:14:22.000 --> 00:14:25.000 I've probably told you this before, but I had a friend in college, 00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:31.000 and we're still friends, but he's really got, he struggles with racism. 00:14:31.000 --> 00:14:35.000 Or he doesn't, but all of us struggle with his racism. 00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:40.000 And he'll tell you, he always puts it off to PTSD. 00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:44.000 I had an event in my life that you don't understand. 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:48.000 When I was in college, and I heard this story the first time like 10 years after college, 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:52.000 when I was in college, I was mugged by these three tall skinny black kids. 00:14:53.000 --> 00:14:57.000 I was mugged by them, and so yes, when I go down the street and I see that, 00:14:57.000 --> 00:15:01.000 yes, I tense up. 00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:04.000 So my question to them, I said, I get it, I get it. 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:06.000 That could be a physiological response. 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:12.000 Do you have that with all tall people? 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:14.000 Always play dumb. 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:15.000 Do you? 00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:18.000 All skinny people? 00:15:18.000 --> 00:15:20.000 But all black people, huh? 00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:23.000 And there was a preexisting paradigm that told you that made sense. 00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:26.000 And if someone had looked at you and said, it's because they're tall, 00:15:26.000 --> 00:15:30.000 you would have said, you are the dumbest person on earth. 00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:31.000 That makes no sense. 00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:35.000 There's nothing in my mind that's going to believe that's because they're tall. 00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:42.000 So what was in there ahead of time that let him believe it was because they were black? 00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:47.000 You know, we think, I've got an experience that shaped me. 00:15:47.000 --> 00:15:50.000 Things shape us before the experience. 00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:54.000 Voices in our head, paradigms, ways we see things. 00:15:54.000 --> 00:16:01.000 And Jesus says, are you brave enough to join Bartimaeus and ask God to open your eyes? 00:16:01.000 --> 00:16:07.000 Open my eyes, and, you know, a physical therapist I know always says that we always forget 00:16:07.000 --> 00:16:12.000 that before I can pick up these glasses, before these muscles engage, 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:16.000 the mind is going to send a signal to tell these muscles to turn off. 00:16:16.000 --> 00:16:19.000 I sent it about 20 years ago, and it hasn't come back. 00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:25.000 But the opposing muscles have to turn off so that the other muscles can turn on. 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:28.000 If they don't, you get that sort of, I mean, you can do it on purpose, 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:32.000 and that's what they call isometric exercise, where you get your muscles to fight each other. 00:16:32.000 --> 00:16:38.000 But basically, you have muscles that have to turn off before others can turn on. 00:16:38.000 --> 00:16:40.000 And we're all saying, give us sight. 00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:45.000 And Jesus is saying, are you ready to turn off the muscles that are keeping you from it? 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:51.000 You want to turn off the paradigm muscles, the voices in your head, the things we were taught? 00:16:51.000 --> 00:16:55.000 You want to turn those off long enough to see the world. 00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:58.000 And what he says is, man, that is a great step of faith, 00:16:58.000 --> 00:17:02.000 and that's why he says to them, your faith has already healed you. 00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:10.000 If you're ready, if you're ready to turn off the muscles that tell you how to see the world, 00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:19.000 Jesus is ready to open our eyes and let us see with interest and honesty the world that is truly around us.

Father Pat's message centers on the transformative power of true spiritual sight—seeing not just with our eyes, but with the heart and mind open to truth, wisdom, and deeper understanding. Using the story of Bartimaeus, the blind man healed by Jesus, Father Pat invites us to reflect on how much of our perception is filtered through assumptions, old narratives, and inherited interpretations. He challenges us to ask for sight not to control or judge the world, but to genuinely see it as it is—to encounter Scripture, others, and God with fresh, humble, and unfiltered eyes. Spiritual growth, then, is not about confidently declaring what we know, but about courageously admitting what we haven’t yet seen and remaining open to being changed. In a detailed and thoughtful reflection, Father Pat begins by exploring the miracle story of Bartimaeus in Mark’s Gospel, emphasizing that many of Jesus’ healing miracles—especially in the Gospels—center around restoring sight and hearing. This, he suggests, is not accidental; rather, these physical healings point to deeper spiritual realities. Particularly in John’s Gospel, sight becomes a metaphor for spiritual insight and wisdom. Father Pat notes that we are all born blind—not just physically, but in terms of perception, understanding, and awareness. Our sight develops over time, and true spiritual sight may take a lifetime to attain. Drawing attention to the subtle details in the Gospel, Father Pat highlights the redundancy in the name “Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus” to show how even the Gospel of Mark was already being shaped for an audience unfamiliar with Hebrew, demonstrating how language and understanding evolve. This becomes a segue into a broader discussion on how we often miss what is plainly in front of us in Scripture because we read it through inherited interpretations rather than with fresh eyes. He compares this to proofreading one’s own writing: we tend to see what we think we wrote, rather than what is actually on the page. The same applies to Scripture—we often interpret it through the filters of what we were told it says, rather than what it truly says. Father Pat goes on to examine the parallel between this week’s Gospel and the one from the previous week. Both contain Jesus asking, “What do you want me to do for you?” But the responses are dramatically different. James and John ask for power and authority, while Bartimaeus asks for sight. The contrast is striking—one request is rooted in control, the other in transformation and understanding. Bartimaeus seeks to see the world as it truly is, not to dominate it. This becomes the central spiritual challenge: do we truly want to see the world and others as they are, or do we prefer our preconceived judgments? The homily then moves into a profound critique of the human tendency to rely on rough drafts—mental shortcuts, stereotypes, and emotional reactions—that prevent true sight. Drawing from the work of Brene Brown and psychological insights like the “amygdala hijack,” Father Pat explains that we often emotionally react to people or situations before we even cognitively process them. We then rationalize those reactions with post hoc reasoning, convincing ourselves that our gut feeling came from analysis, when in truth it preceded it. This distortion affects not only how we see others—especially those we’ve been taught to judge or fear—but also how we interpret Scripture. Father Pat stresses the importance of recognizing the filters we bring to religious texts. Two people can read the same passage and come away with radically different conclusions, depending on the paradigms they've inherited. He urges listeners to be self-aware and honest about these filters, rather than claiming that “God says” something simply because it aligns with their own preferences or biases. The message culminates in a call to courageous faith—the faith to ask Jesus, as Bartimaeus did, to open our eyes. But this comes with a challenge: are we willing to “turn off” the internal muscles that keep us from seeing clearly? Just as the body must deactivate certain muscles to allow others to move, we must quiet our assumptions, judgments, and inherited beliefs in order to receive true spiritual insight. Faith is not about being certain and right; it’s about being open, curious, and willing to be transformed. Only then can we truly see the world—and others—as God sees them. Father Pat concludes by reminding us that the healing of sight begins with humility and the desire to see what we’ve missed. Bartimaeus's faith healed him not because he already understood everything, but because he was willing to ask for vision he did not yet have. Likewise, our spiritual journey begins when we admit we are still blind in many ways, and ask Christ to open our eyes—not to reinforce what we think we know, but to show us what we’ve never seen.
